Black History Month

Black History Month is the annual celebration and commemoration of moments in history, achievements and contributions that Black people have made. First brought to the UK in the 1980s, Black History Month was initially introduced to the country by a member of the Greater London Council, Akyaaba Addai Sebo. Since 1987, Black History Month has been celebrated annually in the UK, to eradicate discrimination and encourage racial equality.

There are a number of other Black History Month events in the Cardiff area during the month of October. Find out more about Black History Month and the events around Cardiff at: Black History Month 2022

Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival

The Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival returns from 10 September to 18 October with dozens of events planned across the city. Community groups, schools, gardens and businesses will run a wide range of events centred around cooking, sharing and growing food. Many events this autumn will focus on how communities are coming together to help people to continue to access healthy and nutritious food through the cost of living crisis.

C3SC has partnered with Food Cardiff to provide grants to 20 schools and community groups to help them run events as part of the Autumn Festival’s programme, with many other community organisations also joining in with their own self-funded events during the five weeks. See the full programme and find out more at Third Annual Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival.

C3SC Stories

Volunteer Gardening at Grange Pavillion

Volunteering locally is so rewarding and enjoyable! The C3SC team visited Grange Pavilion to help clear the garden by clearing overgrown and disused flowerbeds.

Are you interested in volunteer gardening? Grange Pavillion are looking for more volunteers for their Gardening Group - check out their website for more details: https://grangepavilion.wales

Butetown Carnival

Over the August Bank holiday weekend, the Butetown Carnival welcomed nearly a dozen international musicians to the stage in Canal Park. The event was an overwhelming success which boasted hundreds of attendees over the course of the two-day festival celebrating Caribbean music, art and culture.

The C3SC team was pleased to support the festival alongside 30 volunteers recruited by the Cardiff Volunteer Centre @C3SC. Our volunteers helped ensure that the festival was litter-free and enjoyable for all - and got to enjoy some fantastic musical guests during their time at the Butetown Carnival!

Community Connections

In the last month, we have supported 30 people to sit the Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene and Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace qualifications. 24 Active Inclusion participants attended an SIA license course to start their careers in the security sector.

Thank you to Esha from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board for taking the time to talk to our participants about careers, and organising clinical attachments and volunteering placements in the NHS. We are supporting refugees who are qualified medical professionals and struggling to navigate the UK medical system. 7 participants from a range of medical backgrounds attended giving them a perfect opportunity to rebuild their lives and careers here in Wales.

Abdul was an eye surgeon in Afghanistan and has struggled to find career support to help him transfer his qualifications and experience to work in the UK. He said: "Thank you Esha and C3SC for being so helpful. I have been looking for almost a year for someone to point me in the right direction and help me to get back into my medical career. I was worried I might lose my skills, but now I know that I can still carry on my profession here."

We also arranged two weeks of work experience for one participant at a local garage. Pasha was a mechanic in Afghanistan before coming to Cardiff as a refugee but was struggling to find garages that would hire him due to a lack of experience in the UK. Thank you to Khan Tyres for giving Pasha the opportunity to demonstrate his skills with two weeks of work experience. The work experience went so well that Pasha is now at the garage full-time!

FA Wales Supporting Refugees in Cardiff

We are so thankful to the Football Association of Wales for organising volunteer opportunities for Afghan refugees and providing tickets for their families to attend the FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier Wales vs Slovenia game. 120 refugees attended the match. It was great to see the families cheering on Wales and enjoying the atmosphere. FA Wales even provided a quiet prayer space with prayer mats for those who needed to use it during the game.

Meena volunteered at the game and was able to bring her family along. She told us "This has been a great opportunity. We’ve been able to get out of our accommodation, enjoy the football, and spend time together as a family. I have a little girl and it’s great for her to see the women play football."

Hearing the voices of Afghan refugees

Deputy First Minister, Jane Hutt, visited the accommodation where many Afghan families are staying. The refugees shared their experiences of being in temporary accommodation for months with limited information on when and where they will move. They spoke about the impact the uncertainty about the future was having on their mental health. Some families have been in temporary accommodation for almost a year. Families have struggled to find full-time school provisions for their children and many children are only able to attend school for a few hours a day, a couple of times a week. We have been supporting people, many of whom are eager to find a job and continue their careers in the UK.

The Cardiff Volunteer Centre

At Cardiff Volunteer Centre @C3SC, our priorities are supporting volunteering and ensuring good quality, inclusive and accessible opportunities for people from a diversity of backgrounds, and promoting the positive contributions volunteering makes to the wellbeing of both the volunteers themselves and the people, communities and organisations they help. See page 16 for details of our drop-in sessions across the City. To contact the Volunteer Centre, email volunteer@c3sc.org.uk or call Kailee Carella on 07973 725690.

Volunteering opportunities for groups

The team at Cardiff Volunteer Centre can help with Employer Supported Volunteering Schemes (ESV) - helping you find or connect with a group volunteer placement. Whether your organisation is looking for opportunities to volunteer or your third sector group would like to link up with an ESV scheme, we can help you coordinate a volunteering day that is beneficial to the sector - whether through additional practical support or opportunities for sharing skills - as well as for the team of volunteers! Email volunteer@c3sc.org.uk for more information.

Group Volunteering with

This summer, the Volunteer Centre team was contacted by Serco for support in organising a series of volunteering days for their employees. C3SC has placed over 50 volunteers directly into volunteering roles since April of this year and supported finding meaningful volunteering opportunities for Serco employees.

Volunteer Centre Development Officer Callum Jones met with groups of employees over the course of August to understand their goals and interests in volunteering, and diligently matched them to appropriate opportunities across Cardiff. Suki, of Serco, said, "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Callum and found him to be extremely polite and professional. We are continuing to work with Callum and Cardiff Third Sector Council to source new opportunities for our staff who have yet to use up their volunteering day."

One group of employees went on placement with FareShare Cymru and spent the day helping improve the daily lives of those facing food poverty. Groups delivered food directly to charities and community partners, sorting and picking the food parcels for the next day of deliveries in the FareShare warehouse!

Suki said, "Finally, I just want to say a big thank you to everyone at Cardiff Third Sector Council who have supported me in finding suitable volunteering opportunities for staff and look forward to continuing our working relationship."

Volunteering Opportunities

MENFA - Volunteers Needed for MY CLUB - MENFA Mentoring for All are looking for dedicated and driven volunteers to assist with MY CLUB tuition. The service is to assist with homework/education for both primary and secondary school pupils.

Samye - Volunteers in Finance, Admin, Marketing, Maintenance and Hospitality - The Samye Foundation exists to help individuals reach their full potential. They do this by making the benefits of mindfulness and complementary therapies accessible and available to all. Samye are recruiting volunteers in Finance, Admin, Marketing, Maintenance and Hospitality.

Cardiff Third Sector Council is committed to removing barriers to volunteering. As a part of this commitment, the Volunteer Centre team has engaged with a range of new volunteers to make sure that people in Cardiff can understand how to access volunteering opportunities. Our volunteers have translated our volunteering information leaflet into some of the most widely used community languages in Cardiff, such as Farsi, Kurdish Sorani, Ukrainian, and Polish - with other languages in progress! Our Volunteer Admin Assistant, Awa, has also been contributing to this project alongside her ongoing social media and WordPress training. Awa has translated the leaflet into her own first language - French!

Through this task, Awa was also able to learn new skills in the editing program Canva, which she used to help format the translated text onto our current flyer design. The team at C3SC is continually grateful for all the contributions volunteers make, not only to our own organisation but to Cardiff as a whole!

We are pleased to report that we supported the Jewish History Association of South Wales with their successful bid for almost £40,000!

The project aims to get a wider range of people from minority ethnic communities into heritage, where they are underrepresented. This will enable participants to gain useful skills and experience. The project will start in October and they will be looking for volunteers from communities in Riverside, Butetown, and Grangetown.

Other recent feedback we have received for the advice and support we provide includes the following:

“Thank you for the information, the governance stuff was most helpful and informative.”

"Thank you, super helpful! It really is a minefield for us and this makes it much clearer"

“Very informative, I learned a lot.”

"This session has certainly made me feel I am ready to be a trustee."
