Welcome to the April edition of C3SC’s members’ newsletter. In this issue, we are pleased to provide updates on some recent and ongoing work and developments – including: Introducing new members to the team at C3SC - (p3) Our new membership process, digital membership portal and directory - (p4) The next steps for our Member Networks - (p14) Opportunities – for training, funding, vacancies - (p19) There’s also still time to be part of a conversation with us to tell us what you think. It will also help us to ensure we continue to deliver information and services that are tailored to local advice and support needs, sharing knowledge, connections and confidence in the local sector - see our articles on how we want to make sure we are ‘Listening to You’ (p16) and to help to shape a VCSE Strategy for Cardiff (p15). We are delighted to offer drop-in sessions at our new offices in Butetown Community Centre, Loudoun Square, CF10 5JA from 10am to 4pm Mondays to Fridays to support you to volunteer, take on volunteers and to manage your activities and groups sustainably. We recognise that volunteering is often an important step to learn skills – such as language, communication and team work – as part of the journey in to employment. In recognition of this, the Volunteer Centre is offering employability programmes and working with local employers to help people, often out of poverty, in to employment. If you know anyone who can benefit from this support, please contact us. We’ll be happy to help. As we move in to a new operational year, we’d like to say thank you for the trust more and more local community groups and organisations are placing in us. We look forward to working with you over the forthcoming year as we strive together to strengthen communities and community action. We've Moved
We are pleased to confirm that we are open for drop-in our office at Butetown Community Centre from 10:00am-4:00pm from Monday to Friday. We are able to support you with advice, information and help on issues about and relevant to voluntary organisations, community groups and social enterprises - from setting up a group to finding funding, volunteering, recruiting trustees, supporting your board, training opportunities, engagement events and network meetings. Meet our New Team Members!
We would like to wish a warm welcome to the new members of the team Louise Nott (Communications Support Assistant), Jalal Goni (Community Connections Development Officer), Roxanne Bainbridge (Community Connections Development Officer), Callum Jones (Volunteer Centre Development Officer) and Nathaniel Peters (Finance and Admin Assistant).
C3SC Member Networks Cardiff Third Sector Council (C3SC) has an established history of delivering thematic Third Sector Network meetings as a means to: Consult with Third Sector groups about their needs and promote the work of the sector Share information and learning Provide opportunities to connect with third sector representatives Recent changes in legislation and policy have had a significant impact on the role of the third sector and opportunities for working collaboratively with statutory partners to provide solutions to local problems, taking preventative approaches that put citizens at the centre. In response, C3SC’s Senior Management Team and Board approved a review of the structure and working of Member Networks to assess how well placed they are structurally and operationally to support the new focus and ways of working. The feedback we’ve received from the review has highlighted that Networks are seen as adding real value, and for them to focus on facilitating policy influence and the development of effective solutions that meet people’s needs and help them to lead healthy and fulfilled lives and reach their potential, by enabling: More connections and collaboration across the sector, and More integration between the public and third sectors
Going Forward Look out for our “Schedule of Network meetings” in 2022-23 and invitations to our members to join our meetings of current and new Networks. Following your feedback, we plan to hold Network meetings with the following key themes:
Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Starting Well - Children, Young People and Families Safer & Cohesive Communities Volunteer Coordinators - Volunteer Recruitment and Management Trustees and Good Governance Community Anchor Organisations Working in the Middle Members’ Forum We will be providing regular updates on the Networks Page of our website to keep our members up to date with activities, funding, policy influence and engagement opportunities.
Opening of Capel I Bawb
We were delighted to attend the official opening of Capel I Bawb at Cardiff Royal Infirmary last week and meet face to face with our RPB partners and ProMo Cymru. The iconic, Grade II listed building, is now home to a health and wellbeing information and advice centre, a new library, meeting spaces, IT suite and the Aroma Café. The groups involved in Help Name the Former Chapel at Cardiff Royal Infirmary (CRI) Initiative had a chance to visit the place and explore its potential. One of the groups has already expressed their desire to start running creative writing sessions in the building. We will share opportunities for the third sector to deliver services from the Centre as we become aware of details. The Cardiff Volunteer Centre
At Cardiff Volunteer Centre our priorities are supporting volunteering and ensuring good quality, inclusive and accessible opportunities for people from a diversity of backgrounds, and promoting the positive contributions volunteering makes to the wellbeing of both the volunteers themselves and the people, communities and organisations they help.

The Cardiff Volunteer Awards is C3SC’s annual award ceremony held to celebrate volunteering in Cardiff. It is an opportunity to recognise the contributions and achievements of volunteers, community groups and organisations for their hard work and for going above and beyond to support everyone in our communities. The Cardiff Volunteer Awards not only gives us here at C3SC the chance to thank and reward all of our volunteers, community groups and organisations for their incredible support, but also an opportunity for members of the public to do the same by nominating volunteers, community groups and organisations in Cardiff that made a difference to them and or their community. Youth Led Grant (YLG)
REFLECT Community Church/Centre was awarded Youth Led Grant funding in the autumn of 2021. We have been inspired by REFLECT’s project and their aspirations for youth support and engagement in Ely. Currently, the centre have various projects running to engage all community members, including a Kids Club project. Youth Led Grant funding has made it possible for this group to make its return to the centre with lots of new games, consoles and activities for young people to engage with. The project lead, Abbie Prothero, reflects on the project, saying, "All we do, we want community to be at the heart of it. We want to bring the community together." The panel meets once a month to promote the YLG fund, coordinate the application process, and decide which youth-led projects are awarded funding!
Employer Needs, Future Workers! Do you know anyone aged 16 and over, unemployed and looking for work or paid employment? Supported by our Community Connection Development Officers, Cardiff Volunteer Centre @ C3SC can help with a range of skills in looking for work and developing knowledge of local businesses and recruitment opportunities. We can help with CV writing, preparing for an interview, communication, team working, confidence, self-esteem, money matters and more – and connect you with employers through ‘World of Work’ workshops. If a volunteering opportunity will assist to develop language, communication and other skills, we can help with that too! Volunteering to Include If you know someone who is aged 25 or over and from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background, and who is unemployed and looking to return to or enter work or paid employment, we can help them be more work ready, and connect them with local businesses through ‘World of Work’ workshops to find out more about recruitment opportunities. Our team can also assist with CV writing, skills for interviews and employment, confidence building, opportunities to volunteer to build skills, as well as talking with each person about the right career path for them. Placement and Apprenticeship
The Volunteer Centre @C3SC would like to hear from you and/or anyone you know who is interested in a placement and apprenticeship opportunity to work or gain experience in the Third Sector. Louise will work alongside the Volunteer Centre team to improve outreach to communities in Cardiff through social media and other digital communication tools, and engage with C3SC member organisations to develop their online presence and marketing strategies. A quote from Louise about her experience at C3SC: "My time at C3SC so far has been insightful and enjoyable. I have received different training opportunities on using WordPress and have been introduced to a Customer Relationship Monitoring system for the very first time. I have been able to gain a full understanding of the different aspects of how C3SC works and learn about its member organisations. Working with C3SC has given me the chance to vastly improve my design skills using Canva, as well as elaborate on my writing skills in different areas like the website and social media. I look forward to learning and expanding on my skills during the rest of my Kickstart placement with them!"

Cardiff Volunteers Coordinators Network Meeting - Tuesday 17th May, 2022 @ 2:00pm-3:30pm. The Cardiff Volunteer Coordinators Network (CVCN) is a Participation and Engagement initiative by Cardiff Third Sector Council as part of its commitment to the development and support of the volunteering infrastructure in Cardiff and its role within Third Sector Support Wales. Each quarterly meeting is packed with information, guidance, discussions and networking. It’s also a great way to raise the profile of volunteering in Cardiff.
Introduction to Volunteering & Preparing for Volunteers - Thursday 26th May, 2022 @ 2:00pm-4:30pm. The training will help you improve your knowledge on welcoming volunteers to your organisation. It would be suitable for volunteer managers, coordinators, supervisors, team leaders and individuals who have responsibility for recruiting, training and managing volunteers.
Drop-in Sessions
The Cardiff Volunteer Centre hosts online and in-person volunteer drop-in sessions. Online sessions are every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1pm–2pm on Zoom and drop-in sessions in our office from 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday at Butetown Community Centre, Loudoun Square, CF10 5JA, for anybody who is interested in learning more about how to get into volunteering. The new site offers secure space to promote your activities, facilities and services and to connect, and is a great way to help people find out more about the range and types of community activities and services you provide and taking place across the City as well as opportunities to volunteer. Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Strategy Thank you to all our members who have contributed to our Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Strategy for Cardiff. Following the latest stages of consultation and engagement - thematic focus groups - delivered in March, we are working with Richard Newton Consulting to collate your feedback to inform the final Strategy. You can still have your say by responding to our Survey or contacting info@richard-newton.co.uk for a discussion. We aim to share the strategy with you in April – look out for details in the next edition of the Members’ Newsletter.

There have been changes to the eligibility to vote in elections especially for our Qualifying Foreign Citizens, and all young persons who can now register to vote at age 14 and actually vote at age 16 and over. The Welsh Council Elections are due to take place on Thursday 5th March 2022, when these changes will be in place. Writing Successful Funding Bids - Friday, April 29th (10:00am - 12:15pm) This training is for anyone in the third sector – whether paid, volunteers, trustees – interested in learning more about the techniques and tools you need to plan, write and present winning funding bids, and how to understand and meet the expectations of funders. It’s suitable for anyone who is new to looking for funding through to those with more experience who are looking to develop their options and knowledge. LATEST FUNDING AND SUPPORT
Despite some challenging deadlines for offering small grant opportunities to our member organisations and groups, the Team has worked tirelessly to ensure these deadlines are met and that every funding opportunity has been maximized. Case Study - Glenwood Church We are delighted to announce that C3SC successfully administered the Food Poverty Fund on behalf of Cardiff Council, where organisations applied to C3SC based on the grant criteria set out, and as such, Glenwood Church were one of 17 successful applicants that were awarded £13,000 to develop and create the Food Pantry. In this briefing we provide up to date information on the funding and support available to groups, particularly as we respond to the impact of the pandemic in our communities. The information below is a selection of available funding opportunities. Our aim is to help voluntary and community groups and social enterprises delivering across Cardiff to navigate through the quantities of information that is available. Community Asset Loan Fund: Funded by Welsh Government, the Community Asset Loan Fund will offer loan finance to groups looking to bring property into community ownership. Greggs Foundation - Breakfast Clubs Programme funding is available to help primary school children get a nutritious start to their school day. Tesco Community Grants scheme is open to all registered charities and notfor-profit organisations, with priority given to projects that provide food and support to young people. The Austin & Hope Pilkington Trust gives grants to registered charities in the UK. Grants rounds in 2022 will focus on supporting people in the early stages of their career within the arts as well as projects and initiatives that will help redress the under-representation of BAME people in all sections of the arts. Henry Smith Charity Strengthening Communities Programme provides a 3 year grant (with potential for 9 years in total) for organisations with an income of £20,000 - £500,000. Grants can cover up to 50% of the organisation’s running costs. Community Ownership Fund: UK government is providing £150 million over 4 years to support community groups to take ownership of assets and amenities at risk of being lost. THIRD SECTOR NEWS Keeping Well this Winter
This year’s Minority Ethnic Communities (MEC) Health Fair will be held on Wednesday 29th June 2022 @ Cardiff City Hall from 10am to 2pm. Health related groups and organisations are offered the opportunity to sponsor this prestigious event by choosing one of our sponsorship packages, this include the opportunity to engage and build rapport with diverse community groups in the city, by holding a stall, run a workshop and many other opportunities. The Open University in Wales are running an event that will look at how inequalities in Wales have been impacted by the pandemic, both in terms of exacerbating existing inequalities but also looking positively at what opportunities and potential has been realised from newly formed solidarities. The Be Active fund is offering grants between £300 and £50,000 for non-profits in Wales that aim to do one of the following in the arena of sport and physical activity: Reduce inequality Create long-term sustainability Introduce new or different ways of operating This funding is awarded on a sliding scale, and organisations can apply once per financial year (April to April). BBC Children in Need, in partnership with the #iwill Fund and The Hunter Foundation, have launched a fund to support organisations to embed youth social action across the UK. This funding will support organisations to bring social action and youth empowerment opportunities to children and young people to help prevent or overcome the effects of the disadvantages they face.
