Welcome to the May edition of C3SC’s members’ newsletter. As the new operational year gets underway we, like many of you, are in the process of finalising our end of year reports and completing our business plans for the forthcoming year. Through the surveys, Listening to You Visits, Networks, Events and Focus Groups that we have arranged in the past year – with thanks to everyone who has contributed – some of the opportunities and threats are coming through loud and clear. We are hearing from many of you You really value having a local third sector infrastructure organisation providing advice, information and a collective voice for the sector You would like the shape of relationships – including funding relationships - with our statutory partners to evolve to reflect the new economic, social and environmental realities, opportunities and risks as the impact of fundamental changes in the way we do things emerge - brought on by legislation, the pandemic, Brexit etc. You would like to see more collaboration and join up across the sector to strengthen our responses and support solutions to the city’s challenges and opportunities You would like to see a renewed focus on effective engagement and Social Value We have been working proactively in response, and will share plans – which will include A VCSE Strategy for Cardiff Our new approach to our Member Networks Our new Funding Strategy In the meantime, we have continued to work with our strategic partners – including on Developing a shared approach to effective engagement Re-establishing a local Social Value Forum Looking at the ways in which we work and how they can support our social purpose – such as how funding and commissioning arrangements can better support VCSE organisations to pay the Real Living Wage. As well as news on funding, influence and developments, we will keep you updated in our newsletters and on our website (www.c3sc.org.uk), and in the meantime feel free to continue to contact and message us to share your views, perspectives and experience. We look forward to hearing from you. With best wishes, Sheila and the Team at C3SC

Meet our New Team Member!

Meet our new team member, Magdalena Thomas, Volunteer Centre Support Officer @C3SC! "I am originally from Poland and have been living in Cardiff for over 15 years. I like the diversity and openness of the city and I feel at home here. My experience with volunteering started when I joined the Polish Saturday School in Cardiff back in 2011, first running a toddler club and then volunteering as a teacher. When we decided to register our school as a charity in 2016 and contacted C3SC we got information and guidelines which allowed us to register with the Charity Commission. The funding we were able to receive as a charity helped our school grow stronger and the school will be celebrating its 15 year anniversary next year. As a Welsh learner I started a Welsh conversation group, Clonc yn y Bae, which meets every Tuesday afternoon in The Coal Exchange Hotel to practice speaking Welsh. There are plenty of volunteering opportunities in Cardiff, and many people have already discovered their call for volunteering. I am now part of a passionate team @C3SC who will help you find a perfect match for your volunteering opportunity."

C3SC Member Networks Thank you to everyone who contributed to the recent review of our Member Networks - their themes, membership and purpose. We are excited to announce that 2022 will be the year we put your feedback in to action! From what you’ve told us, we have reduced the number of our themed Networks, and between our Third Sector Development Officers and our newly appointed Community Connection Development Officers, you can expect Network Meetings to provide opportunities for more connections and collaboration across the sector, and more integration between the public and third sectors. Member forums will provide the opportunity to respond on a flexible basis to emerging opportunities and what you tell us you want to talk about. We also recognise the value in utilising our social media platforms in engaging and supporting our members and communities. We will be using the Cardiff Community platform as a valuable tool to support ongoing discussion and dialogue, and we will be actively developing our Member Networks webpage over the coming months to provide you with up to date information on our networks’ activities, and opportunities for funding, policy influence and engagement.

NRW Building Empowerment and Resilience Project We have been pleased to lead on this project for Cardiff and the Vale, supporting more groups and organisations to consider and connect with opportunities to contribute towards environmental sustainability. At our latest event, we held an Environmental Showcase with GVS, at which five local environmental groups described their stories of how they have developed positive environmental practice. Following the Showcase, C3SC co-hosted an event at which participants were provided with advice and information on writing better funding bids, and heard from funders from the National Lottery Community and Heritage Funds who were keen to link with not for profit groups and support environmental projects. We received great feedback from the sessions, from which we anticipate funding applications to follow, which the C3SC team will be available to help with.

LATEST FUNDING AND SUPPORT

We are delighted to say that in 2021/22 C3SC administered a number of small grant programmes with a value of over £400,000, these funds contributed to a number of priority areas that supported in excess of 90 organisations across Cardiff. An example of the type of funding and how it was utilised is described below.

Winter Pressures Funding The Cardiff and Vale Winter Pressures Grant directly funded local activity to help to alleviate pressures, create additional capacity/activity, or extend existing activity where other funds are running out. We supported Cardiff and Vale Care and Repair with a project to assist during the winter period. They visited 204 older people in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan and completed a variety of small adaptation works to help them to live as independently as possible in their own home. Referrals came from various sources including health, local authority, voluntary sector and older people themselves. The small adaptation works that were done assisted 32 older people to return to their homes from hospital; reduced the risk of falls for 62 older people and increased independence in daily living for 110 older people. They told us ‘Many thanks for all your help and support here, much appreciated.’
