C3SC Stories

As part of our role of providing support across the community, the team at C3SC had a hands-on experience volunteering for a fantastic project in the Ely area of Cardiff - Diana Gardens. The Garden was opened in 1993 by Princess Diana, but over time, it became a wasteland and was eventually closed by Cardiff Council. ACE - Action in Caerau and Ely is running the Diana Garden Regeneration Project to turn the space back into the playground and nature site it once was. Our team visited the site to clear the area by the gate, making space for plants and planting lavender. There are many exciting regeneration projects around Cardiff. Next on our list for our ongoing community work will be volunteering at Grange Pavilion garden, a new community garden for the residents of Grangetown. The team at C3SC are eager to work on community projects like this - Contact us at enquiries@c3sc.org.uk for more community opportunities for us to take part in.

Summer of Fun Last year we ran a range of successful schemes - including Summer of Smiles and the Winter of Wellbeing. Building on this success, this year we are working again with Child Friendly Cardiff to bring the ’Summer of Fun’ to children and young people across Cardiff throughout the Summer Holidays. C3SC has worked in partnership with Cardiff Council to promote and deliver a small grants programme. We received over 50 applications, and the Panel were able to allocate grants to support 36 groups and organisations to deliver a diverse range of activities and opportunities for children and young people in Cardiff. For details of the activities and how to sign up visit Summer of Fun: Child Friendly Cardiff. We look forward to sharing the stories of the activities supported through our scheme in future editions of the Newsletter.

C3SC Support in the Community

It has been great to see so many of you as we have been out and about in the past month. C3SC worked with 13 other organisations to collectively organise this year’s Minority Ethnic Community (MEC) Health Fair. The event was a great success, with over 260 people taking part and benefitting from over 50 stalls and workshops answering questions and providing information and advice on a range of health and wellbeing matters. Attendees were also able to benefit from health checks on the day from a range of providers - including Muslim Doctors Cymru who provided over 100 checks. We were pleased to be invited to St Mary’s The Virgin Primary School and personally congratulate them on becoming a School of Sanctuary - an amazing achievement! Year 5 pupils performed a moving poem they wrote about seeking sanctuary in Cardiff at the Great Get Together launch. The event was a reminder that "we have far more in common than that which divides us" - Jo Cox. The gloomy weather didn’t dampen spirits at Grange Festival on June 25th. It was lovely to see the community come together and celebrate at Grange Pavillion. We loved meeting and speaking to so many people at the event. The first Polish community day - Polish Heritage Day - was held on 13th July at the Senedd, celebrating the success and contributions of the Polish community residents in Wales. Magda Thomas of the Cardiff Volunteer Centre, who is originally from Poland, represented C3SC at the event. Speakers included First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, Ambassador of Poland to the UK, Piotr Wilczek and Honorary Consul of Poland to Wales, Professor Keshav Singhal. We love seeing the great work going on in our communities across Cardiff. If you have any events coming up you’d like to shout about you can share them on our Community Platform.

Do you know someone who deserves to join the Youth-Led Grant Panel? Nominate them now by contacting Callum at callum.j@c3sc.org.uk! We are looking for 14-25 year-olds to join the panel to get involved and have their say on what youth-led projects are funded in the Cardiff area. As we begin to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are still recruiting and organising the panel remotely. Panel meetings are transitioning back to in-person events, with the option to continue to participate virtually. Being a panellist is an excellent opportunity to learn from your fellow members and socialise as you review funding applications from young people and decide which projects to sponsor. You will then have the opportunity to see the benefits of this funding by liaising with the projects over the course of the year, and review the successes of each when they submit their end-of-project reports. If you have any questions about joining the Cardiff YLG Panel, please email volunteer@c3sc.org.uk or give us a call on 07973 725569. Here’s what one of our panel members have to say: “My name is Kyle and the reason I joined the Cardiff Youth Led Grant Panel was to focus on Cardiff... as a young person in a volunteering sense. Furthermore, it is important to me as it offers a unique platform on getting to the heart of volunteering in Cardiff, which is like an ocean... literally.” – Kyle
