Those on their annual school holidays have participated in the Summer of Fun project for the second consecutive year, the scheme will run until 30 September 2022, supporting children and young people to take part in a range of FREE sporting, cultural and play-based activities.

The Summer of Fun 2022, which began after the pandemic, has supported Cardiff’s future generations with their social, emotional, mental and physical wellbeing over the summer and continues the essential work of the city’s childfriendly recovery. After the success of last year’s Summer of Smiles and the Winter of Wellbeing, children and young people have enjoyed a ‘Summer of Fun’ as part of a multimillion-pound Welsh Government project across Wales. All activities are inclusive for children and young people up to the age of 25, from all backgrounds and all parts of Wales, and are available in Welsh, English or bilingually, in addition to regulated summer childcare provision.

This year C3SC has also been supporting providers to offer food at their activities, helping with some of the serious issues we face around holiday hunger and the cost-of-living crisis.

The three main objectives of the Summer of Fun project are supporting fun and the opportunity for children and young people to express themselves through play; community-based interactive, creative and play-based initiatives for all ages; and providing opportunities to play with friends and peers.

A Day in the Life of ACE - Action in Caerau & Ely

We have been connecting job-seekers with employers across Cardiff and helping people take the first steps back into work. Through a partnership with BT Cardiff, we were able to spend an afternoon at their office with 5 of our employability project participants. The participants were Afghan and Ukrainian refugees who had recently arrived in the UK. They shared with BT how not having any UK work experience was difficult for them to get interviews for jobs. We spent the afternoon learning about the jobs available, career progression, and what it’s like to work for BT. Participants were also able to shadow BT employees for the day which was a great way to get a feel for the job. The day was very informative and we’re so pleased that all participants have secured an interview for upcoming jobs at BT! One participant, Abdul, told us: "The open day was a fantastic experience to see a working culture. It was really great to see how they operated as this is the first time I’ve seen it in the UK."

Back in May 2022, Cardiff Volunteer Centre @C3SC visited ACE - Action in Caerau & Ely to chat with volunteers and hear about the great work they do.

If you need support, or just want to know more about our employability support feel free to contact the Community Connections team: Jalal Goni - Email: jalal.g@c3sc.org.uk, or call: 07467 835546. Roxanne Bainbridge - Email: roxanne.b@c3sc.org.uk or call: 07467 837135

The Community Connections and Cardiff Volunteer Centre teams have been supporting people looking to get back into work. We have been supporting people aged 25+, from a BAME background, economically inactive or long-term unemployed to take the first steps into work. Our participants come from a range of countries and ethnic backgrounds, including, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Romania, Sudan, Ukraine, and Yemen. We support people of any background and ability level to find the right job or educational pathway for them. This month, we have spent time with Afghan and Ukrainian refugees who have recently arrived in the UK to help them navigate employment and start to rebuild their lives here. We have supported two of our participants to gain employment with Cardiff Council. We supported Rania, originally from Egypt, with her application for a temporary Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) Co-ordinator role. It’s fantastic to hear that Rania’s temporary contract has been extended. Oksana, a Ukrainian refugee has been employed as a Support Officer for the Refugee Resettlement team. We are pleased she will be able to use her experience as a refugee in the UK to support others arriving. About her new role Oksana said, ''I now feel like I can breathe freely."

Robert Green at FH CIC told us, told us: "Fighting/combat is a metaphor for life. When you are getting hit in boxing or kickboxing or being pinned down in Jiu Jitsu or wrestling, this is life. You can either give up and continue to get hit or pinned or you can fight back. Using combat sports, FH CIC gives people the perseverance to fight back life’s challenges.”
