On behalf of the City of Carmel, I am delighted to welcome you to Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time! Our city's vibrant arts and cultural scene is a big part of what makes Carmel such a fantastic place to live, work, and visit, and Civic Theatre plays a key role in bringing that creative energy to life. As the longest continuously operating community theatre in the United States, Civic Theatre has been a cultural cornerstone of Central Indiana since its founding in 1915, offering outstanding live entertainment to a broad and diverse audience. It is the largest community theatre in Indiana, and also ranks among the 10 largest in the country. Since 2011, Civic Theatre has been proud to call Carmel home, enriching our community and building a lasting legacy, and we are so fortunate to have Civic as one of the pillar organizations within our beautiful Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts.
Civic Theatre’s programs cater to all ages and interests. The Junior Civic program introduces young people, from toddlers to teens, to theatre skills and life lessons - such as discipline, self-confidence, and teamwork - that help build a stronger community. Each year, Civic delivers 90 performances and provides more than 500 opportunities for volunteers and professionals to participate onstage and behind the scenes in a high-caliber setting, with access to cutting-edge equipment and facilities—right here in the heart of Carmel!
I encourage everyone to enjoy the remarkable shows and educational programs that Civic Theatre offers. My heartfelt thanks go to the staff, crew, volunteers and patrons who make the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre such an invaluable cultural partner in our community.
Enjoy the show!

ROBINSON
Welcome to Civic Theatre’s production of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME.
As I sit down to write this note, I am reminded of the first time I read Mark Haddon’s novel. When describing the story to a friend, I found myself struggling to express in simple terms just what the book was about. I use the word struggle because, as humans, we are hardwired to label and organize the world around us, neatly filing people, places, and things into our internal storage units.
After revisiting the book and attending a performance of the play, adapted by Simon Stephens, it became clear to me that this story defies simple categorization. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is many things at once: a murder mystery, a hero’s journey, a coming-of-age tale, and a deeply moving family drama. However, at its core, I came to see it as a story about difference—and how society perceives, interacts with, and often misunderstands those who do not fit into its expected norms.
Our protagonist, Christopher Boone, is a unique and brilliant teenager. While he excels in mathematics and logic, he is often naive when interacting with the world around him and struggles to navigate the complexities of human relationships and social conventions. While many have speculated about Christopher’s neurodivergence, Mark Haddon intentionally avoided labeling him. Instead, Haddon describes Christopher simply as “a mathematician with behavioral problems.” This distinction is important, as it shifts our focus away from a clinical diagnosis and toward an exploration of what it means to see and experience the world differently.
I would like to make one thing clear; this is not a play about autism, Asperger Syndrome, or any other specific condition. Rather, it is an opportunity to reflect on the beauty and challenges of human diversity. It is about the ways in which we connect—or fail to connect—with those who experience the world in ways we may not fully understand. A connection that seems more important than ever.
In creating this production, I sought to show you the world through Christopher’s eyes—his frustrations, triumphs, setbacks, and discoveries. Through this lens, the cast works to illustrate the exhilarating and complex in what we often see as mundane and ordinary. It is a perspective that challenges each of us to examine our own assumptions about “normalcy” and to recognize the extraordinary in all of us.
Thank you for joining us on this journey. I hope Christopher's story leaves you inspired to embrace the richness of the human experience in all its forms—and that you leave the theater not only entertained, but also inspired to approach differences with curiosity, empathy, and understanding.
Enjoy the show!

Michael has been an integral part of Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre since 1990 and has held the esteemed position of Executive Artistic Director since 2016. As of January 8, 2024, he proudly marks 34 years of dedicated service to Civic, during which time he has contributed to over 240 remarkable productions. His journey at Civic commenced with Sound Design and Carpentry, and over the years, he has immersed himself in all aspects of Civic Theatre’s operations, spanning from production to administrative res ponsibilities, and even gracing the stage as a performer.
In addition to his broad responsibilities, Michael has served as the House Sound Designer for nearly every production since 1997. His talents also led him to the role of Producing Director for a remarkable 15-year tenure, where he skillfully managed budgets, production timelines, and a dedicated staff. Michael’s leadership extended to overseeing the logistical challenges of relocating Civic’s physical presence twice. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the design and construction team responsible for the Tarkington, Studio Theater, and support spaces during the move to Carmel, acting as the owner’s representative in crucial decision-making processes.
As a director, Michael has lent his creative vision to more than 38 productions at Civic since 2000, including memorable performances such as WAIT UNTIL DARK, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (eight productions), THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, HAIRSPRAY, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, ELF THE MUSICAL, THE COLOR PURPLE and RENT.
Beyond his directorial accomplishments, Michael’s technical expertise shines through his designs, be it for sound, lights, or scenery. His artistic contributions have left an indelible mark on most theatres in Indianapolis, earning him recognition and accolades for his sound designs from The Indianapolis Star and the League of Indianapolis Theatres.
While primarily working behind-the-scenes, Michael has occasionally graced the stage, delivering compelling performances in roles like Larry in COMPANY, Arthur in LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! and Czolgosz in ASSASSINS, all at the Phoenix Theatre. He took on the iconic character of Zach in A CHORUS LINE at Civic in 1993, and in a triumphant return to acting in 2015 after a 17-year hiatus, portrayed Caiaphas in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.
A true native of Central Indiana, Michael’s roots run deep. He attended Avon High School, IUPUI, and Ball State University, nurturing his passion for theatre and honing his skills. Michael and his lovely wife, actress Marni Lemons, who is a third-generation Civic performer, reside in a charming 130-year-old house in downtown Indianapolis. Their enduring partnership of 29 years is a testament to their shared love for the performing arts and their remarkable contributions to the theatre community.
