A WELCOME FROM MAYOR FINKAM

On behalf of the City of Carmel, I am delighted to welcome you to Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s production of Pride and Prejudice! Our city's vibrant arts and cultural scene is a big part of what makes Carmel such a fantastic place to live, work, and visit, and Civic Theatre plays a key role in bringing that creative energy to life.

As the longest continuously operating community theatre in the United States, Civic Theatre has been a cultural cornerstone of Central Indiana since its founding in 1915, offering outstanding live entertainment to a broad and diverse audience. It is the largest community theatre in Indiana, and also ranks among the 10 largest in the country. Since 2011, Civic Theatre has been proud to call Carmel home, enriching our community and building a lasting legacy, and we are so fortunate to have Civic as one of the pillar organizations within our beautiful Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts.

Civic Theatre’s programs cater to all ages and interests. The Junior Civic program introduces young people, from toddlers to teens, to theatre skills and life lessons - such as discipline, self-confidence, and teamwork - that help build a stronger community. Each year, Civic delivers 90 performances and provides more than 500 opportunities for volunteers and professionals to participate onstage and behind the scenes in a high-caliber setting, with access to cutting-edge equipment and facilities—right here in the heart of Carmel!

I encourage everyone to enjoy the remarkable shows and educational programs that Civic Theatre offers. My heartfelt thanks go to the staff, crew, volunteers and patrons who make the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre such an invaluable cultural partner in our community.

Enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR'S LETTER

In the fall of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, Civic's Executive Artistic Director Michael Lasley called me up and asked-- “Would you like to direct a live-streamed play?” A fully produced Civic production in the Tarkington Theatre with three television cameras sending the live performance to those who had purchased a ticket. Over the next five months we became theatre makers and television producers—telling a story through two mediums, with appropriate social distancing, masks, laugh tracks, and a myriad of other new and challenging details that we encountered as we embarked on this grand pandemic adventure. That show was Pride & Prejudice. With a brave and stellar cast, fabulous design, and a team of dedicated Civic artists it was a charming, joyful, and heartwarming production. It was at times frustrating, often a challenge, but always an exhilarating adventure that I feel so honored to have directed.

Four years have passed and well…we wanted an opportunity to present this delightful production to Civic’s larger audience—allow you to see the beautiful and hilarious world of Pride & Prejudice fully realized and live onstage. Kate Hamill’s adaptation is highly comic, contemporary in its perspective, and still honors the romantic and thoughtful classic novel. Our design team created a world that is bright and illustrative while honoring the aesthetic of Regency England. Both onstage and on the page, there is a sophisticated juxtaposition of cartoon and nuance, which highlights the timeless conversation between love, friendship, and family.

As you can see, for many reasons we are excited to present this play as part of Civic’s season. Building on our original ideas and experiences, we have been on a new adventure these past weeks and can’t wait to share our fresh approach to this classic story. I am so thankful to the 2021 cast and crew for their talents and equally thankful to my current collaborators for their excellence. Thank you for joining us and enjoy the show!

CAST BIOS

ALAINE SIMS SHE/HER (MISS CAROLINE BINGLEY)

Alaine Sims is honored to make her Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre debut as Miss Caroline Bingley in PRIDE & PREJUDICE. She has performed locally with Southbank Theatre Company, Carmel Community Players, Hendricks Civic Theatre, and The Hyperion Players. A long-time Austen fan, Alaine invites the audience to enjoy this raucous reimagining of Jane’s classic work, for “Follies and nonsense, whims and inconsistencies do divert me, I own, and I laugh at them whenever I can.” She thanks her partner and husband for managing the home front with their two young daughters, and the audience for supporting live theatre and timeless stories.

CARLY KIRBY (LIZZY BENNET)

Carly Kirby (Lizzy Bennet) is ecstatic to return to the Booth Tarkington after a three-year hiatus. Her most recent work at Civic was WAIT UNTIL DARK in the Studio Theater. Carly is an acting alumni from Ball State University. She would like to thank her family and Tyler for being so supportive in her returning to the stage.

DANIEL WILKE HE/HIM (MR. WICKHAM)

Daniel is excited to return to Civic Theatre for his second show. With over a dozen productions in his acting journey, his time with Civic has quickly become his favorite experience. He appreciates the opportunity to work with such a talented team with PRIDE & PREJUDICE and values the growth that he's achieved as an actor. Looking ahead, Daniel is eager for many more performances and the chance to continue developing his craft at Civic Theatre.

ELAINE ENDRIS SHE/HER (LYDIA BENNET)

Elaine Endris (Lainey) will be performing the role of the spunky Lydia Bennet in Civic’s production of PRIDE & PREJUDICE. Theatre is a new love for Lainey, and over the last few years she has played Pugsley in THE ADDAM’S FAMILY and Boris the Spy in CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG. At university, she studied Film and Media Production, Screenwriting and Graphic Design, and more recently graduated from cosmetology school. Currently, she is a bridal makeup artist and freelance designer. Lainey would like to thank everyone at Civic for this special opportunity. Please enjoy the show!

JENNIFER SIMMS (MRS. BENNET)

Jennifer is thrilled to be reprising her Civic Theatre role as Mrs. Bennet in tonight’s production! She has been acting in Indianapolis and the surrounding communities for over 20 years. Other companies include Footlite Musicals, Merry Mac Players, Q-Artistry, Brown County Playhouse, Golden Ticket Productions, Phoenix Theatre and Cultural Arts Center, Fast Apple Productions and many more! Jennifer has Directing/Assistant Directing credits at Greenwood Community High School, OSLC and Merry Mac Players. She would like to thank Emily for trusting her again with this role, the cast for being amazing, and Jeffery, Melody and Novalee for endless nights of support!

JULIA AMMONS SHE/THEY (JANE BENNET)

Julia Ammons (she/they) is so proud to be back for her 12th Civic show. You might have seen her as “Cassie Ferguson” in Footlite’s A CHORUS LINE (2023), “Milan Stage Manager” and ensemble of Civic’s KINKY BOOTS (2024), or “Lily" in Defiance Comedy's THE HEIST BEFORE CHRISTMAS (2024). She hopes her portrayal of Jane Bennet reminds the audience of the strength of being direct and compassionate. Thank you to mom, dad, Jackson, Sally, & Momo! Be kind.

KELSEY VANVOORST SHE/THEY (CHARLOTTE LUCAS)

Kelsey has performed in the greater Indianapolis area as an actor and improviser for the last 15 years. Kelsey loves to create moments of joy and laughter, and what better way to do that than with theatre? Thanks to Emily for putting faith and trust in them and all their friends and family for putting up with their antics for 35 years.

LEAH HODSON SHE/HER (MARY BENNET)

Leah Hodson graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's in acting. Since then she has enjoyed doing lots of Shakespeare and other classical plays. In her spare time she reads quite a lot, just like Mary! She recommends The Power of Vulnerability by Brene Brown for non fiction and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss for fiction. In the future she hopes to one day make her own cheese.

CAST BIOS

LOUIS SORIA HE/HIM (MR. BINGLEY)

Since returning to the stage last year, Louis has thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with his theatrical roots in the community theater scene. Having most recently appeared as Bobby in CABARET and Henri Baurel in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS at Footlite Musicals, he is ecstatic to continue his performance repertoire with his debut here on Civic's stage! He extends his gratitude to everyone on the cast and crew for providing a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere and looks forward to putting on an incredible show alongside these talented and wonderful people.

MATT ANDERSON HE/HIM (MR. COLLINS)

Matt Anderson’s first time on the Knebel stage was in 2018 with Kate Hamill’s adaptation of SENSE & SENSIBILITY, and he is absolutely tickled to be returning for some more Austen hilarity. Matt most recently played Jacob Marley in Ben Asaykwee’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL COMEDY at The District Theater, and during the day he can be seen acting at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Much love to Matt’s wife Lisa, who will be taking the Studio Theater stage next month in Civic’s THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME.

REX ARTHUR WOLFLEY (MR. BENNET)

Rex Arthur Wolfley is pleased as punch to join the cast of PRIDE & PREJUDICE. He was last seen on the Civic stage as Principal Hawkins in THE PROM. This show is dedicated to his lovely wife, who always reminds him that while he will never be Colin Firth in the BBC Pride and Prejudice mini series, he's still a very close second in vying for her heart.

SUSAN SMITH (LADY CATHERINE DEBOURGH)

Susan is delighted to be back at Civic where she is best remembered for her recurring role as The Wicked Witch in THE WIZARD OF OZ. She has produced, directed and performed in avocational and professional theater for decades and hopes to continue for several more. Recent credits: Clairee in STEEL MAGNOLIAS, Sister Hubert in NUNSENSE II, Jacob Marley & all Ghosts in A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Mother Abbess in THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Up next: HONKY TONK ANGELS at Myers Dinner Theatre. Many thanks to Emily and this charming and talented cast and crew. Kisses to her ever-supportive husband, Paul.

TANNER BRUNSON (MR. DARCY)

Tanner is excited to kick off his 10th year with Civic Theatre, both on stage and off, with this heartwarming, fast paced adaptation of a timeless classic. Tanner would like to thank his family for their continued support of his passions, his friends for their patience and understanding as he continues appearing on Civic's mainstage, and you in the audience for your patronage. Previous appearances include Count Leopold (ANASTASIA), Snoring Man (WHITE CHRISTMAS), and Banquo (MACBETH) at IndyFringe Bard Fest.

STAFF BIOS

DESIGN)

Michael has been an integral part of Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre since 1990 and has held the esteemed position of Executive Artistic Director since 2016. As of January 8, 2024, he proudly marks 34 years of dedicated service to Civic, during which time he has contributed to over 240 remarkable productions. His journey at Civic commenced with Sound Design and Carpentry, and over the years, he has immersed himself in all aspects of Civic Theatre’s operations, spanning from production to administrative res ponsibilities, and even gracing the stage as a performer.

In addition to his broad responsibilities, Michael has served as the House Sound Designer for nearly every production since 1997. His talents also led him to the role of Producing Director for a remarkable 15-year tenure, where he skillfully managed budgets, production timelines, and a dedicated staff. Michael’s leadership extended to overseeing the logistical challenges of relocating Civic’s physical presence twice. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the design and construction team responsible for the Tarkington, Studio Theater, and support spaces during the move to Carmel, acting as the owner’s representative in crucial decision-making processes.

As a director, Michael has lent his creative vision to more than 38 productions at Civic since 2000, including memorable performances such as WAIT UNTIL DARK, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (eight productions), THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, HAIRSPRAY, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, ELF THE MUSICAL, THE COLOR PURPLE and RENT.

Beyond his directorial accomplishments, Michael’s technical expertise shines through his designs, be it for sound, lights, or scenery. His artistic contributions have left an indelible mark on most theatres in Indianapolis, earning him recognition and accolades for his sound designs from The Indianapolis Star and the League of Indianapolis Theatres.

While primarily working behind-the-scenes, Michael has occasionally graced the stage, delivering compelling performances in roles like Larry in COMPANY, Arthur in LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! and Czolgosz in ASSASSINS, all at the Phoenix Theatre. He took on the iconic character of Zach in A CHORUS LINE at Civic in 1993, and in a triumphant return to acting in 2015 after a 17-year hiatus, portrayed Caiaphas in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.

A true native of Central Indiana, Michael’s roots run deep. He attended Avon High School, IUPUI, and Ball State University, nurturing his passion for theatre and honing his skills. Michael and his lovely wife, actress Marni Lemons, who is a third-generation Civic performer, reside in a charming 130-year-old house in downtown Indianapolis. Their enduring partnership of 29 years is a testament to their shared love for the performing arts and their remarkable contributions to the theatre community.
