A WELCOME FROM MAYOR FINKAM

On behalf of the City of Carmel, I am delighted to welcome you to Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! Our city's vibrant arts and cultural scene is a big part of what makes Carmel such a fantastic place to live, work, and visit, and Civic Theatre plays a key role in bringing that creative energy to life.

As the longest continuously operating community theatre in the United States, Civic Theatre has been a cultural cornerstone of Central Indiana since its founding in 1915, offering outstanding live entertainment to a broad and diverse audience. It is the largest community theatre in Indiana, and also ranks among the 10 largest in the country. Since 2011, Civic Theatre has been proud to call Carmel home, enriching our community and building a lasting legacy, and we are so fortunate to have Civic as one of the pillar organizations within our beautiful Center for the Performing Arts.

Civic Theatre’s programs cater to all ages and interests. The Junior Civic program introduces young people, from toddlers to teens, to theatre skills and life lessons - such as discipline, self-confidence, and teamwork - that help build a stronger community. Each year, Civic delivers 90 performances and provides more than 500 opportunities for volunteers and professionals to participate onstage and behind the scenes in a high-caliber setting, with access to cutting-edge equipment and facilities—right here in the heart of Carmel!

I encourage everyone to enjoy the remarkable shows and educational programs that Civic Theatre offers. My heartfelt thanks go to the staff, crew, volunteers and patrons who make the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre such an invaluable cultural partner in our community.

DIRECTOR'S LETTER

Welcome to Civic’s tenth production of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT since the year 2000! It’s a milestone that speaks volumes about the enduring power of this musical and the deep affection our community holds for it. Whether this is your first time seeing Joseph or your tenth, we’re honored to share it with you once again. I want to take an opportunity to thank the hundreds of performers, musicians, stage crew and creative staff who’s aggregate contributions have made our production of the show what it is today.

At first glance, Joseph dazzles with its vibrant colors, infectious music, and playful storytelling. But beneath the glittering surface lies a message that resonates just as strongly today as it did when this story was first told: a message of redemption, forgiveness, and grace.

Joseph’s journey—from favored son to betrayed brother, from prisoner to powerful leader—is a sweeping tale of resilience and transformation. But what makes this story truly powerful is how it ends: with reconciliation. After all the hurt and hardship, Joseph chooses forgiveness over vengeance. It’s a reminder that while we can’t always control what happens to us, we can choose how we respond—with compassion, with generosity, and with love.

This show continues to be one of our most popular productions, and it’s easy to see why. I have directed 9 of our 10 productions and while it would be logical for me to have tired of this story it is simply not the case. I love it as much now as I did in 2000 – perhaps more! The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice bursts with energy, humor, and heart. It invites people of all ages to laugh, cheer, and reflect—together. And the story itself offers something we all long for: hope that fractured relationships can be healed, and that brighter days are ahead, even after our darkest nights.

Thank you for sharing your time with us. We’re so proud to bring JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT to the stage once again— filled with the spirit of joy, unity, and forgiveness that makes this show such a gift to experience.

With gratitude,

MICHAEL J. LASLEY

When not performing, this definitely-not-an-algorithm-created-individual has dabbled in stage management, sound operation, and even dared to co-direct. Seriously, this bio was written by a person, not a robot. Ask Parrish yourself, he'll tell you. (And he’s definitely not programmed to say that.)

STAFF BIOS

MICHAEL J. LASLEY (DIRECTOR/SOUND DESIGN)

Michael has been an integral part of Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre since 1990 and has held the esteemed position of Executive Artistic Director since 2016. As of January 8, 2024, he proudly marks 34 years of dedicated service to Civic, during which time he has contributed to over 240 remarkable productions. His journey at Civic commenced with Sound Design and Carpentry, and over the years, he has immersed himself in all aspects of Civic Theatre’s operations, spanning from production to administrative res ponsibilities, and even gracing the stage as a performer.

In addition to his broad responsibilities, Michael has served as the House Sound Designer for nearly every production since 1997. His talents also led him to the role of Producing Director for a remarkable 15-year tenure, where he skillfully managed budgets, production timelines, and a dedicated staff. Michael’s leadership extended to overseeing the logistical challenges of relocating Civic’s physical presence twice. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the design and construction team responsible for the Tarkington, Studio Theater, and support spaces during the move to Carmel, acting as the owner’s representative in crucial decision-making processes.

As a director, Michael has lent his creative vision to more than 38 productions at Civic since 2000, including memorable performances such as WAIT UNTIL DARK, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (eight productions), THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, HAIRSPRAY, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, ELF THE MUSICAL, THE COLOR PURPLE and RENT.

Beyond his directorial accomplishments, Michael’s technical expertise shines through his designs, be it for sound, lights, or scenery. His artistic contributions have left an indelible mark on most theatres in Indianapolis, earning him recognition and accolades for his sound designs from The Indianapolis Star and the League of Indianapolis Theatres.

While primarily working behind-the-scenes, Michael has occasionally graced the stage, delivering compelling performances in roles like Larry in COMPANY, Arthur in LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! and Czolgosz in ASSASSINS, all at the Phoenix Theatre. He took on the iconic character of Zach in A CHORUS LINE at Civic in 1993, and in a triumphant return to acting in 2015 after a 17-year hiatus, portrayed Caiaphas in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.

A true native of Central Indiana, Michael’s roots run deep. He attended Avon High School, IUPUI, and Ball State University, nurturing his passion for theatre and honing his skills. Michael and his lovely wife, actress Marni Lemons, who is a third-generation Civic performer, reside in a charming 130-year-old house in downtown Indianapolis. Their enduring partnership of 29 years is a testament to their shared love for the performing arts and their remarkable contributions to the theatre community.

Her day job at Civic is the Education Programs Director where she helps manage one of the largest and longest-running theatre education programs in the state alongside friend and colleague Brent E. Marty. Holly is a proud graduate of Ball State University where she was the first Dance Performance major. Recently, she took on a new role as “Grandmama” to rising star, Vienna Kay. She dedicates her work on JOSEPH X to her son, Grant, who is a huge fan of “Jofess.”

Allison leads the stage management team at Civic Theatre and loves bringing a vision to life on stage. She graduated from the Indiana University Theatre & Drama department where she trained in stage and production management. ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER

Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1969) to Cinderella (2021), his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the COVID pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School Of Rock, CATS and The Phantom Of the Opera, he equalled Rodgers & Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.

Lloyd Webber owns seven London theatres, including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Over the past three years the latter has been completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings has meant that considerable work has been undertaken across his theatre portfolio during the pandemic, including the complete remodelling and reseating of the Gillian Lynne.

Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre.

Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by Harper Collins in March 2018.

TIM RICE

Tim Rice has worked in music, theatre, and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession – musical theatre. Their first collaboration was based on the life of Dr. Thomas Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes of Us. Their next three works together were much more successful – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita.

Tim has since worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess), and Stuart Brayson (From Here to Eternity). He has also written with Freddie Mercury, Burt Bacharach and Rick Wakeman among others.

Tim founded his own cricket team in 1973, which has now played over 750 matches, and was president of MCC, founded in 1789, in 2002. He crops up here and there in all branches of the media, drawing on his extensive knowledge of the history of popular music.

As an EGOT, he is one of only 17 people in the world to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award, was knighted by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1994, and is the proud owner of a boxer dog and two dozen chickens.
