KINKY BOOTS 2024

Page 1

A WELCOME FROM MAYOR FINKAM

On behalf of the City of Carmel, I am delighted to welcome you to Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s production of Kinky Boots, kicking off the 2024/2025 season! Our city's vibrant arts and cultural scene is a big part of what makes Carmel such a fantastic place to live, work, and visit, and Civic Theatre plays a key role in bringing that creative energy to life.

As the longest continuously operating community theatre in the United States, Civic Theatre has been a cultural cornerstone of Central Indiana since its founding in 1915, offering outstanding live entertainment to a broad and diverse audience. It is the largest community theatre in Indiana, and also ranks among the 10 largest in the country. Since 2011, Civic Theatre has been proud to call Carmel home, enriching our community and building a lasting legacy, and we are so fortunate to have Civic as one of the pillar organizations within our beautiful Center for the Performing Arts.

Civic Theatre’s programs cater to all ages and interests. The Junior Civic program introduces young people, from toddlers to teens, to theatre skills and life lessons - such as discipline, self-confidence, and teamwork - that help build a stronger community. Each year, Civic delivers 90 performances and provides more than 500 opportunities for volunteers and professionals to participate onstage and behind the scenes in a high-caliber setting, with access to cutting-edge equipment and facilities—right here in the heart of Carmel!

I encourage everyone to enjoy the remarkable shows and educational programs that Civic Theatre offers. My heartfelt thanks go to the staff, crew, volunteers and patrons who make the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre such an invaluable cultural partner in our community.

Enjoy the show!

Mayor Sue Finkam City of Carmel

DIRECTOR'S LETTER

1) PURSUE THE TRUTH.

KINKY BOOTS is based on a true story about Steve Pateman and the attempt he made to save his family owned shoe factory W.J. Brooks Ltd. in Northamptonshire, England. To help boost deflating factory sales, Steve designed and manufactured a line of “kinky boots“ that were sold under the name Divine Footwear.

2) LEARN SOMETHING NEW.

In 2005, the Kinky Boots story became a feature film, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joel Edgerton, that same year Broadway producer Daryl Roth saw the film at the Sundance Film Festival. Inspired by the message of the film, she enlisted TONY winners Jerry Mitchell, Harvey Firestein, and Grammy award winner Cyndi Lauper to adapt the movie into a stage musical. Eight years later in April 2013 the show debuted on Broadway, it is the winner of every major Best Musical Award including the TONY, GRAMMY and London’s OLIVIER award.

3) ACCEPT YOURSELF AND YOU’LL ACCEPT OTHERS TOO.

KINKY BOOTS the musical, tells the story of Charlie who suddenly inherits his father‘s bankrupt shoe factory, he finds unexpected inspiration in the form of Lola, a flamboyant drag artist. As Charlie and Lola work to turn the factory around, they find that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible. With compassion and a lot of understanding this unlikely pair learn to embrace their differences and ultimately themselves.

4) LET LOVE SHINE.

Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre is committed to celebrating, representing and engaging the diverse people and cultures that make up our community. I am grateful to and honor the cast, staff, designers and crew who collaborated on the creation of our KINKY BOOTS “happiness factory.”

5) LET PRIDE BE YOUR GUIDE.

When KINKY BOOTS hit Broadway, it was a huge step forward in representation of gender and sexual fluidity, and drag culture, twelve years later the context has changed. Drag has become increasingly visible through main stream shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and popular events, such as drag branches and drag queen story hours. The art form continues to probe and question gender and social norms, provoking audiences to do the same – and that is “inherently political.“

6) YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND. As you exit the theater, I hope we have “raised you up.” Now, it’s your turn. Carry the message of KINKY BOOTS out into the world: stand up for fundamental freedoms and human and equal rights for ALL people.

Michael’s leadership extended to overseeing the logistical challenges of relocating Civic’s physical presence twice. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the design and construction team responsible for the Tarkington, Studio Theater, and support spaces during the move to Carmel, acting as the owner’s representative in crucial decision-making processes.

As a director, Michael has lent his creative vision to more than 38 productions at Civic since 2000, including memorable performances such as WAIT UNTIL DARK, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (eight productions), THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, HAIRSPRAY, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, ELF THE MUSICAL, THE COLOR PURPLE and RENT.

Beyond his directorial accomplishments, Michael’s technical expertise shines through his designs, be it for sound, lights, or scenery. His artistic contributions have left an indelible mark on most theatres in Indianapolis, earning him recognition and accolades for his sound designs from The Indianapolis Star and the League of Indianapolis Theatres.

While primarily working behind-the-scenes, Michael has occasionally graced the stage, delivering compelling performances in roles like Larry in COMPANY, Arthur in LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! and Czolgosz in ASSASSINS, all at the Phoenix Theatre. He took on the iconic character of Zach in A CHORUS LINE at Civic in 1993, and in a triumphant return to acting in 2015 after a 17-year hiatus, portrayed Caiaphas in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.

A true native of Central Indiana, Michael’s roots run deep. He attended Avon High School, IUPUI, and Ball State University, nurturing his passion for theatre and honing his skills. Michael and his lovely wife, actress Marni Lemons, who is a third-generation Civic performer, reside in a charming 130-year-old house in downtown Indianapolis. Their enduring partnership of 29 years is a testament to their shared love for the performing arts and their remarkable contributions to the theatre community.
