“Years of dreams just can’t be wrong.”

- Journey to the Past, ANASTASIA

It’s a moment in my life where these three things hold immense value in my heart. Bringing this story to life, alongside my incredible cast, has consistently reminded me of why it’s crucial to share this narrative... It resonates with everyone. Have you ever experienced loss and felt reminders of it everywhere you turned? Or perhaps believed in something so deeply that it felt almost tangible? Have you ever moved from a place out of fear, simply because it’s all you’ve ever known? Has something unexpected ever caught you off guard?

When I have the privilege to direct, I immerse myself in the script, repeatedly reading it while envisioning the scenes on stage, accompanied by the music. I delve deep into storytelling cues, character arcs, cultural contexts, historical references, and more. It’s widely known that ANASTASIA is deeply rooted in history. This beloved tale draws from the story of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanov, the youngest daughter of Nicholas II, the last tsar of Russia. Is Anya truly Anastasia, the girl with amnesia and a survivor of the Romanov dynasty? As you follow her journey, I invite you to let Terrance McNally’s adaptation of this musical unfold before you. It’s a mystery, a fairy tale, and a romance intertwined, with the central theme of self-discovery and authenticity. Once again, it’s a story that resonates with many, cherished by its fans. It’s no wonder we had a significant turnout for auditions and gasps of excitement when our season was announced at Civic. As a female director, I embrace Anya’s determined resolve and her quest to discover her past to shape her future. I’ve truly fallen in love with this production. The score of ANASTASIA is nothing short of magnificent, with its diverse styles aptly capturing the mood of each scene. Tony award-winning songwriters Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty aimed to update and enhance the stage adaptation of their movie, “Anastasia.” Nominated for two Oscars for their work on the film, they revisited five songs and added 16 new ones for the musical. The collaboration is truly remarkable, with the music evoking the mystery, the fairy tale, and the romance.

A delightful anecdote: the iconic song “Journey to the Past” remained unchanged when transitioning to the stage, having won an Oscar. My friend Liz Callaway lent her voice to Anya’s singing in the original movie. When the song was first recorded, Liz forgot to cut off the last note due to fatigue. Instead of redoing it, the writers decided to keep that long, glorious note, which now closes act one. For years, there was debate over whether Anastasia Romanov’s survival was fact or fiction. While history has now provided a definitive conclusion, the legend of her mystery endures. Believe in the power of belief. Embrace the mystery with fresh eyes and the romance with an open heart. I can attest firsthand that anyone who has experienced separation and loss from a young age yearns for stories like ANASTASIA. There’s a profound need for this narrative to be told, for contemporary fairy tales, for the essence of “Home. Love. Family.” No matter what form your home or family takes. Thank you for supporting live theatre and Civic. Revel in life’s myriad experiences through the journey of one determined young woman.

MICHAEL J. LASLEY (SOUND DESIGN)

Michael has been an integral part of Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre since 1990 and has held the esteemed position of Executive Artistic Director since 2016. On January 8, 2024, he proudly marked 34 years of dedicated service to Civic, during which time he has contributed to over 240 remarkable productions. His journey at Civic commenced with Sound Design and Carpentry, and over the years, he has immersed himself in all aspects of Civic Theatre’s operations, spanning from production to administrative responsibilities, and even gracing the stage as a performer.

In addition to his broad responsibilities, Michael has served as the House Sound Designer for nearly every production since 1997. His talents also led him to the role of Producing Director for a remarkable 15-year tenure, where he skillfully managed budgets, production timelines, and a dedicated staff. Michael’s leadership extended to overseeing the logistical challenges of relocating Civic’s physical presence twice. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the design and construction team responsible for the Tarkington, Studio Theater, and support spaces during the move to Carmel, acting as the owner’s representative in crucial decision-making processes.

As a director, Michael has lent his creative vision to more than 40 productions at Civic since 2000, including memorable performances such as WAIT UNTIL DARK, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (eight productions), THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, HAIRSPRAY, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, ELF THE MUSICAL, THE COLOR PURPLE, RENT and THE PROM.

Beyond his directorial accomplishments, Michael’s technical expertise shines through his designs, be it for sound, lights, or scenery. His artistic contributions have left an indelible mark on most theatres in Indianapolis, earning him recognition and accolades for his sound designs from The Indianapolis Star and the League of Indianapolis Theatres.

While primarily working behind-the-scenes, Michael has occasionally graced the stage, delivering compelling performances in roles like Larry in COMPANY, Arthur in LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! and Czolgosz in ASSASSINS, all at the Phoenix Theatre. He took on the iconic character of Zach in A CHORUS LINE at Civic in 1993, and in a triumphant return to acting in 2015 after a 17-year hiatus, portrayed Caiaphas in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.

A true native of Central Indiana, Michael’s roots run deep. He attended Avon High School, IUPUI, and Ball State University, nurturing his passion for theatre and honing his skills. Michael and his lovely wife, actress Marni Lemons, who is a third-generation Civic performer, reside in a charming 130-year-old house in downtown Indianapolis. Their enduring partnership of 30 years is a testament to their shared love for the performing arts and their remarkable contributions to the theatre community.
