Force est de constater que le réalisateur Olivier Masset-Depasse ne fait pas dans la répétition. Duelles ne ressemble en rien à Illégal, son film qui était en première mondiale en 2010 à la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs à Cannes. Cette fois, il ne s’agit pas d’une critique urgente et émotionnelle de la façon dont la Belgique traite les sans-papiers mais d’un mélodrame stylisé qui, scène après scène, se transforme en thriller noir aux allures d’un film de Hitchcock. Deux des meilleures actrices belges se retrouvent nez à nez. Sa muse, Anne Coesens (Illégal, La Trêve) et Veerle Baetens (The Broken Circle Breakdown) jouent les femmes au foyer aux petits soins pour leur fils, mari et ménage. La Belgique des années soixante dans toute sa splendeur. Les voisines se soutiennent et s’entraident jusqu’à ce qu’un accident tragique empoisonne leur relation et mène à une guerre psychologique qui dégénère. La bonne surprise, c’est le côté glamour de ce film belge. Les actrices, tirées à quatre épingles, excellent dans les duels mais hélas, la tension qui peine à se maintenir tout au long du film, et le scénario qui manque un peu de mordant, ne leur rendent pas service. Feature-length animated films for adult audiences are relatively rare, but this week, no fewer than two very fine specimens are coming to our cinemas. Another Day of Life is based on the book of the same name in which journalist and author Ryszard Kapuscinski describes how the Cold War made the civil war in Angola even more horrific than it already was. With less violence and more delicacy, Funan describes an even worse and even darker tragedy. In the second half of the 1970s, Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge tried to turn Cambodia into a perfectly egalitarian state by re-educating the population in work camps, denying the famine, torturing or murdering opponents, and rewarding traitors. Director Denis Do shows no interest in depicting the unimaginable cruelty and has chosen a human approach. The graphically quite sober film sketches a picture of the daily life – a struggle to survive – of a young mother who is desperately looking for the young child that she lost during an endless, miserable march to a work camp. Do based the film on the story of his own mother, but he tells it in a remarkably serene and restrained way. The events it narrates are bad enough as it is. (NR)
In Duelles, een gestileerd melodrama dat stilaan verandert in een hitchcockiaanse thriller, komen twee van ’s lands beste actrices neus aan neus te staan. Anne Coesens en Veerle Baetens spelen perfectionistische huis- en buurvrouwen die elkaars steun en toeverlaat zijn tot een ongeluk hun relatie vergiftigt en een psychologische oorlog steeds feller ontspoort. Duelles ziet er glamoureus uit en de actrices maken er het beste van, maar ze worden in de steek gelaten door de spanningsboog en het scenario.
In de tweede helft van de jaren 1970 probeerden Pol Pot en zijn Rode Khmer van Cambodja een egalitaire staat te maken door burgers in werkkampen herop te voeden. Regisseur Denis Do focust niet op de gruwel, maar kiest in Funan voor een humanistische benadering. Zijn sobere animatiefilm schetst de overlevingsstrijd van een moeder die wanhopig op zoek is naar de kleuter die ze verloor tijdens een lange mars naar een werkkamp. Do, die vertrekt van de getuigenis van zijn moeder, houdt het sereen en ingehouden.
In Olivier Masset-Depasse’s Duelles, a stylized melodrama that gradually morphs into a Hitchcockian thriller, two of this country’s best actresses stand toe to toe. Anne Coesens and Veerle Baetens play perfectionistic housewives and neighbours who are best friends until a tragic accident spoils their relationship and a psychological war becomes ever more bitter. Duelles looks glamorous and the actresses do their level best, but they are let down by the narrative arc and the mediocre script.
Durant les années septante, Pol Pot et ses Khmers Rouges ont essayé de transformer le Cambodge en un état égalitaire en rééduquant les citoyens dans des camps de travail. Le réalisateur Denis Do ne se focalise pas sur la cruauté, mais opte pour une approche humaniste. Son film d’animation esquisse la lutte pour la survie d’une mère qui cherche désespérément un petit enfant perdu lors d’une longue marche vers le camp de travail. Do, qui se base sur le témoignage de sa mère, signe un film serein et sobre.
