Charlène Darling Quelques jours avant son concert à Forest, Charlène Darling est dans les cartons. C’est que la chanteuse prépare son déménagement. « Je viens m’installer à Bruxelles », déclare-t-elle. Pendant des années, pourtant, le nom de l’artiste était indissociable de Paris et de sa vie alternative. « J’ai toujours été active sur la scène rock et expérimentale », confirme-t-elle. À 17 ans, elle rejoint ainsi les rangs de Pussy Patrol, un groupe très punk et 100 % féminin. « Aujourd’hui encore, je joue avec trois amies dans Rose Mercie, un projet enraciné dans la culture free et noise rock. » Parallèlement à cette débauche d’énergie, Charlène Darling met de la douceur au cœur des chansons de son premier album solo. « J’ai longtemps refréné mon envie d’écrire dans ma langue maternelle, » confie-t-elle. En écoutant les huit merveilles fredonnées par Charlène Darling, les doutes se dissipent et le charme opère instantanément. Fabriquées de façon artisanale, bordées de mélodies créoles, de déviances post-punk et d’idées lumineuses, les chansons de la Française offrent du rêve à la pop moderne. « Au début, je « LES PIRES ÉCUEILS me voyais bien enregistrer un AMOUREUX FONT album de variété. Mais même en essayant de me plier à LES MEILLEURES l’exercice, ça ne sonne » CHANSONS vraiment pas comme Angèle ou Clara Luciani. Moi, je vis vraiment sur une autre planète. Si je me sens proche d’artistes comme Halo Maud ou Flavien Berger, mes influences en français sont plutôt à chercher du côté de Brigitte Fontaine, Alain Bashung ou Dick Annegarn. » Disque précieux, différent, vraiment important, Saint-Guidon s’est érigé du côté d’Anderlecht, à proximité de la station de métro du même nom. « C’est mon ami TG Gondard (Colombey, Pizza Noise Mafia, NDLR) qui m’a fait découvrir les plus jolis coins du quartier. » Sous des allures sophistiquées, les morceaux de Saint-Guidon aiment traîner leurs mélodies dans les ateliers poussiéreux du rock lo-fi, dans les contre-allées de la scène no wave, mais aussi dans le grenier. Là où s’entassent les souvenirs d’autrefois. La musique de Charlène Darling entretient ainsi des relations intimes avec The Shangri-Las, Daniel Johnston, Nico, Yo La Tengo, The Raincoats, Lizzy Mercier Descloux ou Cate Le Bon. Souvent rose bonbon, les chansons affluent toujours dans un trop-plein d’émotions. « À mon sens, les pires écueils amoureux font les meilleures chansons. Je pourrais chanter l’amour toute ma vie. Mais à travers ce thème, il sera toujours possible de défendre d’autres causes, plus engagées ou carrément mystiques. »

cohabiteren de Brusselse trashpunkers van Crash Toto, de sjamanistische noisebricoleur KRAMP, de feeërieke Finse Kuupuu (foto), de Mexicaanse klankweefster Vica Pacheco, harpiste Orphan Fairytale en DJ Keta Bush, zes acts die amper iets gemeen hebben, behalve dat ze in 2020 allemaal nieuw werk uitbrengen via deze undergroundstal. Van vader op vader op zoon NL/ Dat Wide Vercnocke al jaren thuis is in BRUZZ, stemt

ons intens gelukkig. Maar onze huistekenaar houdt zich ook buiten deze pagina’s onledig met briljante visuele vondsten en poëtische verkenningen van de ziel. Dat leidt nu – na Mijn muze ligt in de zetel, Wildvlees en Narwal – tot een vierde strip. Recently, photos emerged of youngsters at Anneessens in the 1970s and 1980s, and the photographer Vincen Beeckman has now produced the book Filip – Anneessens of them. — KRIS HENDRICKX

Who made these photos? They were taken by a priest, Filip, who founded a youth centre in the middle of the drugs neighbourhood Anneessens.

How did you find this collection, which was presumed to be lost? An anonymous lady simply handed them to me in a box in 2014. She knew me from my work in the Marolles and from the photos in pre-metro station Anneessens (where Beeckman made a collage of photos that he had taken of local residents, kh). “I know you’ll make good use of them,” she said.

What is so special about these photos that you decided to make a big photo book with them? The photos are very beautiful as such, just in terms of framing, composition, or light. Filip was a great photographer. But it is of course also because of the story of life in a very difficult neighbourhood, where we suddenly see this positive dynamic, coordinated and inspired by a priest. The photos really come alive: they exude energy and the friendships between the young people. And a book is of course also a way to rescue the photos from oblivion.

Forty years later, you met a number of the kids in the photographs. What do you remember from those encounters? Their stories, which you can hear on the “Brussels belongs to us” website (bna-bbot.be), really bring the photos to life. Crashfest NL/ PILAR ASAP II is het multidisciplinaire festival van VUB-cultuurhuis

Pilar, met werk van kunstenaars die asap dienen te worden ontdekt. The Glitch Edition brengt een ode aan de systeemfout, met onder meer de expo The wilderness hidden underneath, waarin crash, bug en error naar waarde worden geschat. Het collectief Slagwerk stopt de openingsavond vol haperende electro. Er is revelerend theater met Through the looking-glass en Pleasant island, en muziek met concerten van Paard en John Ghost. Pas als de apocalyptische grime & garage van KRANKk is weggestorven, heeft het festival het helemaal begeven. (MB)

Interstellar-ster Matthew McConaughey staat klaar om in een nieuw wormgat te duiken

Offscreen toont tijdreisfilms van toen, nu en morgen

Wormgaten. Einsteins relativiteitstheorie. De grootvaderparadox: tijdreisfilms slingeren heel wat science en fiction naar je hoofd. Voor het onderscheid klopt filmfestival Offscreen aan bij wetenschapsjournalist George van Hal. “We tijdreizen elke dag. Aan een snelheid van een seconde per seconde.” — NIELS RUËLL

et stond in de sterren geschreven dat Offscreen ooit tijd zou vrijmaken voor een programma met tijdreisfilms. Het festival met de tagline ‘Joint the cult’ heeft een boon voor films met een hoek af en menig film met een tijdreisthema oververhit het brein. Is tijdreizen louter fantasie? Wat gebeurt er als je naar het verleden reist en je acties voorkomen dat je moeder aanpapt met je vader? Hou je plots op te bestaan? In het boek Robots, aliens en popcorn belicht de Nederlandse wetenschapsjournalist George van Hal de wetenschap die schuilgaat achter films. TIJDREIZEN? DOODEENVOUDIG

GEORGE VAN HAL:

“Ook mensen die de wetenschap een warm hart toedragen, blijven dromen van reizen door de tijd”

“We tijdreizen elke dag. We reizen vooruit in de tijd aan een snelheid van een seconde per seconde.” George van Hal bedoelt het niet zo flauw als het klinkt. “Eens je je dat realiseert, is het niet meer zo moeilijk om je in te beelden dat je die snelheid kan aanpassen. Dat blijkt ook te kunnen. Ik haal er even de relativiteitstheorie bij. Einstein vertelde dat we niet in een driedimensionale wereld (boven & onder, links & rechts, voor & achter) leven, maar in een vierdimensionale wereld. Je moet ook rekening houden met de tijd. Al die dimensies zijn met elkaar verbonden. Een geparkeerde auto staat stil in de ruimte, maar gaat vooruit in de tijd. Als die auto vervolgens rijdt, hevelt hij een héél klein beetje van zijn snelheid door de tijd over naar snelheid door de ruimte. Wanneer je door de ruimte beweegt, beweeg je een heel klein beetje langzamer door de tijd.” “Klinkt dat als zweverige onzin? Het is gemeten en bewezen in de jaren 1970! Natuurkundigen

vergeleken een heel nauwkeurige klok die per vliegtuig rond de aarde vloog met een heel nauwkeurige klok die op de grond bleef. In het vliegtuig was een fractie van een fractie van seconde minder tijd voorbijgegaan dan op de grond. Stel je nu geen vliegtuig voor maar een ruimteschip dat het heelal doorklieft. Als de afstand en snelheid groot genoeg zijn, kan je daar ver in de toekomst mee terechtkomen. Technisch is dat nog een behoorlijke uitdaging, natuurkundig is het een fluitje van een cent.” Het verklaart de fameuze twist waarmee Planet of the apes (25/3, Cinematek) eindigt. Charlton Heston is met zijn ruimteschip niet op een andere planeet geland, maar in de toekomst. “Dat is de crux van die film. Natuurkundig is dat dus denkbaar.”

EEN ZWART GAT GEHAD?

Zwarte gaten op het witte doek

In het geniale Interstellar (9/3, Cinema RITCS) van Christopher Nolan merkt astronaut Matthew McConaughey na een kort bezoek aan een planeet dat de tijd veel sneller ging aan boord van zijn ruimteschip. “Dat is een wat complexer punt,” legt Van Hal uit. “Die planeet bevindt zich dicht bij een zwart gat. Hele zware massa’s, zoals een zwart gat, krommen ruimte en tijd. Stel je een bowlingbal voor die een kuil maakt in een opgespannen tafellaken. Zo’n zwart gat maakt een kuil in ruimte en tijd. Daardoor – ik ga even kort door de bocht – loopt de tijd vlak bij zo’n zware massa anders. McConaughey was maar even weg, maar voor zijn medeastronauten in het ruimteschip waren het jaren. Interstellar was een idee van Kip Thorne, een grote meneer in de theoretische fysica, die in 2017 de Nobelprijs voor de natuurkunde won.” Om het afleggen van gigantische afstanden te verantwoorden, gebruikt Thorne een wormgat. “Een wormgat is een tunnel door ruimte en tijd. Tot op heden weet niemand of wormgaten bestaan, maar je kan ze op papier wel uitrekenen.”

SNELLER DAN HET LICHT? Tijdreizen is een fluitje van een cent als je naar de toekomst wil reizen. Maar kan het ook achteruit, zoals in de Back to the future-trilogie (8, 15 & 22/3, Cinematek), Timecrimes (10/3, Cinematek) of de b-film Trancers (13/3, Cinematek)? Van Hal: “Een lollige paper in een vakblad beschreef hoe je een bel in de ruimtetijd maakt, waar je als mens

instapt en mee naar toekomst of verleden reist. Alleen zijn daar superspeculatieve, nog nooit geziene dingen voor nodig, zoals exotische materie: materie met een negatieve zwaartekracht. Niemand weet of dat daadwerkelijk bestaat. Niettemin, het is dus zelfs voor mensen die de wetenschap een warm hart toedragen mogelijk om te blijven dromen van reizen naar het verleden.” “Veel fysici stellen dat het nooit zal kunnen om terug te gaan in de tijd. Anderen denken dat het wel kan. Het ene noch het andere is bewezen. Als je sneller beweegt in de ruimte, beweeg je langzamer door de tijd. Op een gegeven moment vlieg je zo snel dat de klok stilstaat. Als je dan nog sneller zou kunnen vliegen, kan het klokje terug tikken. Als je er de formules bijneemt, is het logisch. Het grote probleem: de snelheid waarbij de klok stilstaat is de lichtsnelheid. Licht is overal tegelijkertijd. Sneller dan de lichtsnelheid kan natuurkundig niet. Dus zelf dat klokje doen terugtikken, dat gaat niet. Zo kan je niet naar het verleden reizen. Wel zijn er hoogst speculatieve alternatieven zoals dat wormgat.”

GROOTVADERTJE TIJD In de eerste Back to the future belandt adolescent Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) met de DeLorean van

Doc Brown in de jaren 1950. Zijn moeder wordt op hem verliefd in plaats van op zijn sullige vader, en dat kan dramatische gevolgen hebben. George van Hal: “Dat noemen we de grootvaderparadox. Stel dat je een tijdreizende huurmoordenaar bent die zijn eigen grootvader vermoordt nog voor zijn vader is geboren. Als hij niet wordt geboren, dan jij ook niet. Diezelfde denkkronkel illustreert Back to the future: als zijn moeder en vader geen stel

worden, wordt Marty nooit geboren. Als achteruit tijdreizen zou kunnen, dan moet daar een oplossing voor bestaan.” In Looper (16/4, Cinematek) van Rian Johnson wordt huurmoordenaar Bruce Willis dertig jaar terug in de tijd gestuurd om zijn jongere zelf (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) te doden. “Schitterende film, en net als Twelve monkeys (21/3, Cinematek) intern consistent. Ze volgen het Novikov-principe:

Vijf jaar na A pigeon sat on a branch reflecting on existence opent Offscreen opnieuw met een in Venetië gelauwerde film van de sombere Zweed Roy Andersson. In About endlessness serveert hij andermaal bezwerende slow cinema over de trivialiteit van ons absurde bestaan, opgebouwd uit minutieus geënsceneerde tableaux vivants waarbij je ogen tekortkomt.

Het luik ‘Offscreenings’ met nieuwe films in avant-première oogt bijzonder rijk deze editie. Wij kijken uit naar het radioactieve coming-of-agedrama Les particules en de gestileerde bodyhorror van Swallow. Maar dé eyecatcher wordt ongetwijfeld het Colombiaanse Monos, een verontrustende en visueel verbluffende update van Apocalypse now meets The lord of the flies.

Met ‘Vamos a la playa’ brengt Offscreen hulde aan de Amerikaanse surfcultuur van de sixties. Voor de Elvis-fans is er de retro matineevoorstelling, inclusief ouvreuses en frisco’s, van de musical Blue Hawaii. Maar wij krijgen het vooral warm van Heisser Sommer, het DDR-antwoord op West side story en Les demoiselles de Rochefort met kitschfactor tien. Ganz verrückt!

In Twelve monkeys van Terry Gilliam wordt Bruce Willis naar het verleden gestuurd om te achterhalen waar de virusuitbraak vandaan komt die een groot deel van de mensheid uitroeit. Die virusuitbraak kan niet worden voorkomen, maar misschien vindt hij aanwijzingen die in zijn tijd de vondst van een antivirus kunnen bespoedigen.”

DE PROFESSORENPARADOX In de sensationele Terminator-films van James Cameron (The Terminator, 7/3, Cinematek) stuurt het zelfbewuste computernetwerk Skynet Terminators (Arnold Schwarzenegger is de eerste) naar het verleden om de geboorte van een leider van het menselijke verzet tegen Skynet te voorkomen. “Een achtergelaten onderdeel van de Terminator belandt bij ingenieurs en schenkt hun de kennis die uiteindelijk leidt tot de ontwikkeling van Skynet. LOOPJE MET DE WAARHEID In het ingenieuze Primer (11/3, Cinematek) van doe-het-zelver Shane Carruth vinden vier knutselaars een tijdreismachine uit. “De filmmaker verduidelijkt de tijdlijn niet. De film is populair geworden door de mensen die hem proberen te ontrafelen door verschillende keren te kijken.” In The butterfly effect (14/4, Cinematek) keert Ashton Kutcher meermaals terug naar het verleden om zijn leven en dat van zijn vrienden te verbeteren. Alleen draait elke ingreep anders uit dan verhoopt. “De titel is niet goed gekozen, die verwijst naar de chaostheorie. Een vleugelslag van

een vlinder aan de ene kant van de wereld kan door allerlei chaotische onvoorspelbare effecten aan de andere kant van de wereld een orkaan veroorzaken. Dat zit amper in die naargeestige film. Voor de wetenschap moet je hem niet bekijken. Maar het gedachte-experiment vind ik wel interessant en vermakelijk.” In Richard Kelly’s cultfilm Donnie Darko (3/4, Cinematek) fluistert een konijn een excentrieke student een complot in het oor. “Uiteindelijk blijkt het hoofdpersonage in een tijdsbel te zitten die inklapt. Dat is echt iets voor de rekening van de filmmaker en niet wetenschappelijk. Maar de film zit best wel ingenieus in elkaar. Achtergrondboeken, analyses en interviews wijzen dat uit. Het blijkt best logisch en rationeel in elkaar te zitten, maar dat is niet de lol van Donnie Darko. Ik verkies het mysterieuze van de oorspronkelijke versie boven die iets helderdere director’s cut.” “Je mag speelfilms niet beschouwen als wetenschappelijke documentaires. Bijna alle wetenschappelijke adviseurs zeggen hetzelfde: de wetenschap mag het verhaal niet in de weg zitten. Als je een beter verhaal kan vertellen door ergens een loopje te nemen met de wetenschap, dan moet je dat vooral doen. Maar als het je niets kost om de wetenschap te laten kloppen, dan doe je het beter wel. Dat is ook de trend. Het publiek weet steeds meer over wetenschap en valt er sneller over als je de bal misslaat.”

Een sfeervolle blend van fantastische film en film noir verwant met Cat people en Carnival of souls. Vertoning in gerestaureerde kopie.

Offscreen heeft een zwak voor Aziatische cinema: na specials rond het Indonesische actiegenre en de Japanse sexploitation, focust het festival nu op de grensoverschrijdende Category III-exploitationcinema uit Hong Kong. Wij zetten ons schrap voor Robotrix, een rip-off van Terminator meets Robocop, maar dan met een rondborstige, flikflakkende cyborg in velcropakje!

Festivalgast Jeff Liebermann maakte in 1976 naam met Squirm, zijn variant op The birds waarin hij met de hulp van special- effectswizard Rick Baker aan het begrip ‘wormgaten’ – zie interview hierboven – een wel erg plastische interpretatie gaf. Nog beter is Blue sunshine, een subversieve, paranoïde thriller à la David Cronenberg over de kwalijke gevolgen van lsd-gebruik.

À travers les corps des danseurs et le regard des chorégraphes, le festival In Movement, dédié aux créations bruxelloises, ausculte et interroge les tensions et questions qui traversent la société contemporaine. e festival In Movement rassemble aux Brigittines les créations de chorégraphes travaillant aujourd’hui à Bruxelles. On y verra neuf spectacles, dont quatre créations d’artistes de différentes origines et générations, reflets de la richesse de la danse bruxelloise, laboratoire du corps et miroir de questions sociétales. Pour préfacer cette édition, nous avons réuni Karine Pontiès avec Samuel Lefeuvre et Florencia Demestri, des artistes issus de deux générations différentes qui, au final, cultivent leurs singularités plus que leurs différences. Karine Pontiès qui a signé son premier solo Planta Baja, en 1996, revendique la diversité d’approche et la multiplicité des collaborations. En 25 ans de plateau, elle a fait de la danse, du théâtre visuel, théâtre physique ou d’objets, des marionnettes ou des films. Sa dernière création, Lichens, est un spectacle puzzle pour huit danseurs inspiré du film d’anima-

tion russe Le Conte des contes. Depuis 2012, Samuel Lefeuvre et Florencia Demestri ont présenté en solo ou ensemble des spectacles hybrides, cultivant l’étrangeté dans une physicalité intense et décalée. Dans Glitch, ils s’intéressent à l’irruption du digital dans notre quotidien, traduisant dans leurs corps virtuoses ses disruptions visuelles et sonores.

Avez-vous le sentiment d’appartenir à des générations de chorégraphes différentes ou est-ce surtout la vision artistique personnelle qui influence votre approche de la danse ? KARINE PONTIÈS : C’est un mélange des deux. On est là où on en est par ce qu’on a traversé et les rencontres qu’on a faites. SAMUEL LEFEUVRE : C’est compliqué de séparer les générations. Il y a des chorégraphes qui sont nés les mêmes années que nous avec des travaux qui vont être plus proches des nôtres alors que d’autres

seront plus proches de Karine. FLORENCIA DEMESTRI : Je peux aussi

retourner la question en me demandant comment je pourrais m’inscrire dans l’histoire de la danse. Dans un parcours, on commence par étudier. Souvent, on est d’abord interprète et après on arrive à créer ses propres spectacles. C’est un chemin où tu fais ton tri entre ce qui t’a été donné et les choses qui t’inspirent. Le challenge, c’est de digérer tout ça pour ne pas seulement répéter des habitudes, mais pour pouvoir se réinventer et ne pas s’inscrire dans l’histoire de la danse au sens large, d’une façon figée, mais comme quelque chose qui évolue constamment. LEFEUVRE : Ce qui est intéressant, c’est que ni toi ni nous n’avons une étiquette collée où on verrait que Karine a fait Mudra (école de danse ouverte à Bruxelles entre 1970 et 1988 par Maurice Béjart, NDLR) ou que nous avons travaillé avec Alain Platel. On peut toujours creuser pour chercher certaines influences, mais heureusement, c’est digéré chez tout le monde. PONTIÈS : Au départ, je n’avais pas la volonté de devenir chorégraphe, j’étais interprète. Je pense que vous aussi, vous êtes d’abord des bêtes de plateau, des interprètes. La création, ça vient d’une nécessité d’abord, mais aussi de hasards de la vie et de quelqu’un

En tant que chorégraphes, regardez-vous comment les gens bougent, vous nourrissez - vous de ça ? PONTIÈS : Complètement. Que ce soit dans la rue, dans les films ou dans la littérature ancienne et contemporaine. DEMESTRI : On était un jour dans le métro et on a vu une femme qui avait l’oreillette, le téléphone, des faux ongles disproportionnés, qui essayait de toucher son téléphone. Ses ongles étaient tellement longs qu’elle avait une autre manière de toucher. Son corps était complètement adapté, déformé traité par rapport aux prothèses. C’était une toute autre gestuelle qui découle des nouvelles interfaces et des objets qu’on utilise. LEFEUVRE : Ça lui donnait presque un truc hyper animal. Ses doigts étaient comme des griffes. PONTIÈS : On est souvent comme des entomologistes à regarder des détails, les états de corps des gens, les démarches. C’est une déformation, mais elle correspond à quelque chose qu’on a en nous.

En quoi Bruxelles génère un environnement particulier pour la danse ? PONTIÈS : C’est un lieu de ren-

contres qui attire des danseurs venus d’un peu partout. C’est une plaque tournante. On le voit avec nous. Flore vient d’Argentine, Samuel de France. Moi je suis française aussi et j’ai été éduquée à Barcelone. DEMESTRI : Je trouve que les Belges sont par nature accueillants et ça se traduit dans le milieu de la danse. Dans les autres pays, c’est plus difficile. Je ne sais pas si c’est en raison de la taille des villes ou du tempérament des gens, mais c’est plus difficile d’y créer des liens alors qu’ici, on finit tous par

se rencontrer. Il y a quelque chose de très accessible, c’est comme un terreau très riche. LEFEUVRE : À la base, Bruxelles est très attrayante par le nombre de chorégraphes hyper reconnus. À Bruxelles, et en Belgique, il y a des gens qui sont très importants pour l’histoire de la danse, mais personne ne l’étale. Tout le monde s’en fiche un peu. Alors qu’en France par exemple, les gens sont plus préoccupés par l’importance de leur parcours par rapport à l’histoire de la danse. Ici, j’ai l’impression que c’est beaucoup plus bon enfant, relax et accessible.

Pouvez-vous définir chacun l’univers de l’autre ? DEMESTRI : Je trouve que chez Karine, il y a une place à l’humanité, à la personnalité, à la fragilité et à l’absurde de chacun. Elle compose avec des ingrédients très différents. Pour chaque spectacle, elle crée une pâte qui, à chaque fois, tient compte des personnes avec leur folie, leur délire, leur absurde et leur fragilité. C’est quelque chose de très humain que j’ai vécu aussi de l’intérieur puisque j’ai aussi été interprète pour elle. PONTIÈS : J’aime beaucoup le travail qu’ils font parce que je m’y retrouve quelque part. Il y a un décalage, il y a une étrangeté, qui est un peu plus pétée que la mienne, et peut-être plus contemporaine. Tout ça avec des corps assez virtuoses, un vrai langage et un vrai travail, choses que je trouve de plus en plus rares. On a en commun de travailler un petit peu en dehors des codes, même si on en crée d’autres. Il y a une vraie organicité, une vraie exigence et il y a un décalage. Cela étant, on a des âges différents et des bagages différents. Notre décalage et notre étrangeté se placent à d’autres endroits. Mais en tout cas, il y a des points communs.

WTF? WHY A FLAMENCO FESTIVAL STILL DESERVES ITS PLACE IN BRUSSELS

If you want to know what inspires the rhythmic palmas (clapping), the quavering, emotional voice, and the poetic verses about el mal querer of the Spanish popstar Rosalía, you needn’t go looking in her native Catalonia, but more to the south, in Andalusia. Or very soon at Bozar, which is hosting the fourth edition of the Bruselas Flamenco Festival. The flamenco here is not set to a dark hip-hop beat or hipped-up with urban flavours to appeal to millennials; the programme is all about the real deal, with space both for the tradition and the avant-garde, the roots and the diaspora. The opening day will pay tribute to the guitar builder Valeriano Bernal, who died last year. The cream of flamenco frequented his studio in Algodonales, in the province of Cádiz. But surprisingly enough, he also lived in Sint-Gillis/ Saint-Gilles for more than ten years. More even, it is there that he became the master builder who provided generations of flamenco guitarists with instruments and the pleasure of playing them. For that very reason, the homage concert by José Luis Dominguez and Luis de la Carrasca will take place in the concert hall at the Volkshuis/Maison du Peuple in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles. The exhibition, which is moving to Bozar after the opening concert, also features pieces by local luthiers, and the Centre for Musical Instrument Building in Puurs will show how they learned to build excellent flamenco guitars in the Low Countries, which often compete with or outdo their Andalusian colleagues. The local reaction to the Spanish guests is certainly a productive exchange. When Philip II of Spain, afraid to lose his power, closed down the theatres here, contrarian Brussels locals replaced the actors with “Punchinellos”. In clandestine theatres, puppet theatre experienced a golden age that

continues to resonate today. Such as at the Royal Theatre Toone, for example. Centuries after the Spaniards were driven out of Brabant, the theatre is presenting a production about the rebellious folk hero Tijl Uilenspiegel, with flamenco accompaniment by the Flemish duo Rosas del Alma. And then there is the age-old Spanish tradition of transmitting mastery of the noble gipsy arts from generation to generation. The renowned flamenco singer Antonio Reyes is honouring them by bringing not only his wife, but also a son, a daughter, and a sister. And what to say about the De Cauter family? Cleverly, Myrddin first took guitar lessons with the Spanish masters – Gerardo Nuñez, Manolo Sanlucar, and Rafael Riqueni, who is coming to present his new record Herencia (“heritage”) in Brussels. But for the Bruselas Flamenco Festival, Myrddin is mobilizing his entire family, as befits the best dynasties. He will then demonstrate once again what it sounds like to be the most virtuoso of flamencos ever. If a singer from Barcelona can manipulate a genre for her global breakthrough, then this payo, who is far more subtle, certainly can too. « J’ai trouvé qu’il y avait une énergie créative incroyable au Sénégal. Je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher d’acheter des tissus sans savoir vraiment ce que j’allais en faire » Siré Kaba a grandi en Guinée mais a également voyagé dans plusieurs pays limitrophes. Elle se sent une identité double. « Je me sens Bruxelloise et Africaine de l’Ouest », explique-t-elle avec enthousiasme. Sa formation ? Elle a étudié le journalisme à l’ULB et est détentrice d’un master en gestion culturelle. Siré est également cofondatrice de la plateforme culturelle New African Wave. Elle a lancé sa propre marque, Erratum Fashion, fin 2015. Celle-ci résulte de la conjonction de deux évènements. Le premier était un voyage au Sénégal, à Dakar, qui a marqué Siré. Elle raconte : « J’ai trouvé qu’il y avait une énergie créative incroyable sur place. Je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher d’acheter des tissus sans savoir vraiment ce que j’allais en faire. » L’autre fait marquant est arrivé par le biais de sa fille qui l’interrogeait sur la place des personnes noires et métissées dans la société belge. Ni une, ni deux, la jeune femme comprend qu’elle peut contribuer à renouveler le regard sur l’Afrique à travers la mode, un domaine qui touche un large public. Pour créer ses modèles, Siré explore un large répertoire textile. Elle est aussi à l’aise avec le wax, dont elle rappelle les origines indonésiennes, qu’avec les pagnes tissés ou l’indigo, ce tissu traditionnel d’Afrique de l’Ouest. Le but ? « Revisiter les textiles africains à la faveur d’une

approche contemporaine et innovante ». Le tout est produit à Bruxelles en ateliers sociaux. Erratum Fashion brise les codes traditionnels de la mode, notamment en misant sur des coupes intemporelles qui font fi des saisons mais aussi sur des vêtements unisexes comme la bomber jacket. « J’essaie de travailler sur la durabilité et également sur la récupération des chutes, je ne supporte pas le gaspillage », précise l’intéressée. Preuve de cela, Siré conçoit des housses pour selles de vélo avec des morceaux de tissu destinés à être jetés. Erratum ? Le nom est à comprendre comme une façon de corriger le passé, c’est-à-dire évacuer les stéréotypes et autres cartes postales postcoloniales collant à l’Afrique. «Ce sont des créations qui racontent les peines des femmes qui les créent» Saïda Barkani possède la double nationalité belgo-marocaine. Son parcours est celui de quelqu’un qui décide de faire quelque chose de sa vie… à la seule force des poignets. Un défi pas évident lorsque la tradition et le respect des aînés la poussent dans les bras d’un mari violent dès ses 18 ans. À cœur vaillant et positif, rien d’impossible. L’aventure de son label débute en

juin 2018 dans la région d’Essaouira. À l’époque, elle cherche à se réinventer car le métier d’esthéticienne, dans lequel elle excelle, ne lui convient plus. Une rencontre inopinée avec des artisans lui ouvre la porte vers des nouvelles possibilités. Elle est particulièrement inspirée par les kilims, ces créations textiles traditionnelles. De retour à l’hôtel, elle se surprend à plaisanter :

Badi s’est d’abord fait un nom dans la musique. Né à Bruxelles, c’est à la suite d’un retour aux sources, un voyage au Congo, qu’il sort un premier EP portant le nom de Matonge. À travers cet album, il se penche sur l’histoire de ce pays ainsi que sur son parcours personnel à cheval sur deux cultures. Plusieurs de ses compositions parlent de fringues, sujet qui lui tient à cœur. En septembre 2019, celui qui se déclare « fou de mode » décide de lancer une collection de vêtements. L’étincelle qui a mis le feu aux poudres ? La découverte de vieilles photos de ses parents. Sur ces clichés des années septante, Badi constate un « swag » manifeste en détaillant les coupes et les couleurs des habits portés par son père et sa mère. Cette créativité débridée le titille. Du coup, il se met en tête de créer une première « capsule » qui explore le métissage des matières à la faveur de Memory-Shirt, soit des t-shirts faisant place à des images d’époque qui rappellent le passé du Congo mais « sans jouer au

professeur d’histoire pour autant ». Autodidacte complet, il se fait aider par des costumières qu’il a rencontrées par le biais de la scène musicale. « Capsule » ? Il préfère le mot à « collection » dont le sens est trop lié à la saisonnalité. « Les vêtements que j’imagine ne sont pas conditionnés par la notion de frontière, on peut les porter ici ou sur le continent africain, du coup, le mot saison ne veut plus rien dire », confie-t-il. En ce moment, Badi travaille sur une deuxième capsule qui sera disponible en septembre 2020. L’intéressé la promet « plus travaillée quant aux découpes ». Le nom de BANXV fait allusion au fameux Article XV, un article de loi imaginaire qui invite les Congolais à faire preuve de débrouille face à un État défaillant. Pour découvrir les créations de Badi, deux possibilités : se rendre sur son compte Instagram (banx_couture) ou les découvrir en vrai, une fois par mois, au Café Congo au Studio City Gate (Anderlecht).

Il fait le lien entre la Belgique et le Maroc en intégrant les motifs artisanaux dans une ligne de sacs à l’esprit contemporain. Avançant à tâtons, la créatrice relaie son aventure sur Facebook. L’engouement que suscite son projet la surprend. Mieux, cet enthousiasme lui donne la force de le développer. Résultat des courses ? Saïda fait vivre aujourd’hui quatre familles d’artisans. Pourquoi « Babouche » ? L’intéressée explique : « en Arabe, la racine « bab » désigne la porte, je conçois

mes créations comme ouvrant la porte sur des vies d’artisans, sur des aventures humaines. » Ouvrages féminins par excellence, les kilims fascinent cette entrepreneuse déterminée. Elle raconte : « Ce sont des créations qui racontent les peines des femmes qui les créent, les motifs géométriques peuvent être littéralement lus. C’est quelque chose que je prends soin d’expliquer à qui souhaite acheter mes sacs », commente-t-elle. Pas besoin de s’étendre pour comprendre que ce processus d’extériorisation de la souffrance fait ici écho à une histoire personnelle. tel dat we hier muziek zouden maken, dat zou iets totaal anders worden,” zegt drummer Ruben Vanhoutte in het Brusselse café La Machine, waar de tijgers van Jaguar Jaguar me hebben gesommeerd om het over hun nieuwe ep Madelyn te hebben. “Iets industrieels,” wijst bassist Jasper Segers naar de Panamarenko-achtige machinerie in het midden van de kroeg. “Eigenlijk is dat een vliegtuig dat zich voortbeweegt op geluid,” fantaseert gitarist Emiel Raeymaekers over het buizenwerk dat lijkt op een vreemdsoortig stel verwrongen blazers. “En hoe hoger de noten, hoe harder het gaat vliegen.” Kijk eens aan, de jongens van Jaguar Jaguar zijn twentysomethings met een gezonde quarterlife, maar vooral met een gezonde fantasie. Met die verbeeldingskracht bouwen ze hun muzikale én visuele universum uit, dat zoals bij veel bands vandaag gretig in elkaar haakt. Gelijktijdig met de ep Madelyn brengt de groep zo een achttien minuten durende kortfilm uit, die zesde (onzichtbare) bandlid Tina Herbots samen met Raeymaekers, haar lief, regisseerde. De “visual creative”, zoals de van Brussel naar Antwerpen verhuisde artieste zichzelf op Instagram omschrijft, is de tourmanager van Jaguar Jaguar, en maakt hun pers- en livefoto’s. Eerder draaide ze al een minidocumentaire over de totstandkoming van Jaguar Jaguars debuut-ep. “Superleuk om te doen, al voel ik me bij foto’s maken voorlopig toch comfortabeler,” zegt Herbots wanneer ik haar een paar dagen na het gesprek met haar

confraters in La Machine opbel. “Ik ben eigenlijk vooral geïnteresseerd in het onderzoeken van film als medium, maar omdat ik zo dicht bij de band sta, wilde ik deze kortfilm graag ook zelf maken.” Herbots houdt ervan hoe beeld en muziek elkaar versterken, vertelt ze. “Emiel en ik hebben bijvoorbeeld het kleurenpalet laten bepalen door de klank. Wanneer de muziek in de film luid is, zijn de kleuren ook wat feller.” Zo oogt de videoclip van het exotische ‘Out of sight’, die uit de kortfilm is gesneden, heel erg gesatureerd en een tikkeltje surrealistisch. Alsof David Lynch een nieuwe versie van Alice in wonderland uit zijn zilveren kuif heeft getoverd. “Dat zou helemaal kunnen,” lacht Raeymaekers. De band had ook het werk van de fotograaf Richard Mosse in gedachten, en de film Holy motors van de Franse arthouseregisseur Leos Carax. Een tikkel unheimisch, dus. Raeymaekers knikt. “Een beetje weird past wel in onze wereld.”

CRAPPY Die wereld lag bij Jaguar Jaguars debuut-ep aan de Spaanse Costa Brava, in de buurt van het kustdorpje Montjoi. Voor Madelyn plantte Jaguar Jaguar zijn poezenpoten neer in een onooglijk dorpje in het midden van Frankrijk, in het heuvelachtige niemandsland tussen Vichy en Clermont-Ferrand. “Zo’n plek waaruit iedereen wegtrekt,” zegt Raeymaekers. “Er was bijna geen levende ziel meer te bespeuren.” De natuur was er groots, de huisjes klein. “Het pand dat de jongens hadden gehuurd, was oud en kraakte,” ver-

telt Herbots. “Buiten was er een crappy zwembad. Het regende vaak en het was er mistig. Maar dat droeg bij aan de sfeer. Een beetje moody allemaal, maar heel filmisch.” Ze nam er veel foto’s. Die dienden als inspiratie voor de film, die ze uiteindelijk in België draaide. “Elke nieuwe plek brengt andere inzichten mee,” vindt Segers. “Maar het is vooral ook de afzondering die je dwingt om dan

‘I could actually move now’

“I have lived several lives,” Thomas Jean Henri says. His most recent is that of Cabane, the alias under which the Brussels artist writes fragile folk songs. — TOM ZONDERMAN ○ PHOTO: HELEEN RODIERS

he light that falls into Thomas Jean Henri’s apartment in Schaerbeek is so soft that it neutralizes the hubbub of rue des Palais beneath. Just as tender and delicate are the photos that he tales with his analogue cameras, which we see lying around his living room-cumstudio. “I don’t like digital photos,” he says. “They are too clean, too perfect. Too many pixels, too little life. They lack…skin.” That analogue skin also envelopes the little folksongs by Cabane, which used to be Henri’s nickname and is

now his artistic alias. Fragile sound clouds that he creates on guitar, vibraphone, and an occasional whispering drum computer. After tinkering on them for five years, he has now assembled them under the title Grande est la maison. Henri co-wrote the words to his songs with Caroline Gabard and Sam Genders from the folktronica band Tunng. He didn’t sing them himself, but asked Kate Stables (from the folk-pop ensemble This Is the Kit) and the eccentric folk troubadour Will Oldham alias Bonnie “Prince” Billy to join in.

Henri, an ex-drummer, crossed paths with Stables fifteen years ago. His friendship with Oldham began in 2001. “Will performed at Les Nuits, which still took place in September at the time. Because his band didn’t want to travel to Europe anymore after 9/11, the Botanique drummed up musicians from Brussels.” The offer turned out to be a blessing because Henri had just been thrown out of the Brussels rock band Venus. “That felt like a setback, but suddenly I found myself onstage with my big hero, to whose records I drummed with when I was

a young kid.” Oldham took Henri to England, and then asked him to record his album Master and Everyone at his home in the US. “Will is a great guy, but I’ll never understand him completely. After three days, he sent everyone home again.” (Laughs) Once he was back in Brussels, he sold my drum kit. “I had achieved what I had wanted to achieve. I bought a guitar and started writing songs.”

EPHEMERAL A record under the moniker Soy Un Caballo followed, on which Kate Stables and Will Oldham (in French!) turned up. After that release, Henri’s creative output receded into the background because his time was consumed by his work as Stromae’s tour manager. Following that intense period and

after a few personal ups and downs, he needed a moment of rest. Hence Cabane, cabin in French. “I love the idea of a temporary shelter that protects you against bad weather,” he smiles. That bad weather can come in all kinds of forms, he says: social, political, but also emotional and romantic. “It is a place that protects you from sadness.” For the past fourteen years, that safe haven has been Henri’s apartment. “This record is a tribute to this place. I have lived several lives here. These songs feel like a conclusion. I could actually move now.” (Laughs) It wasn’t cabin fever that made him step out with Grande est la maison,

though. “We need places to hide away nowadays, but at the same time there is so much discord. That title is like a political act: it is time that we listen to one another and open up our houses and our hearts.” Henri’s songs developed in this apartment, of course. With the exception of the violins and the vocals, everything was also recorded here. “For Kate’s vocals I went to her house in Paris, while Will recorded his in the US and sent them over. Of course I would have preferred if all three of us had been singing together in this room, but since Will became a father, he prefers to stay at home.” Cabane will become a different story during live sets. “We are used to having everything available whenever we want it, but I enjoy fleeting things that appear and then disappear just as quickly. That’s why I will only perform twice, once in Brussels and once in Paris. I’d like Cabane to be as ephemeral as a book that you read only once; it lives on in your memory.”

Seven members of the governing coalition in the Brussels parliament are calling for the organization of “Matrimony Days”. Patrimony refers to the heritage of fathers, or what comes from fathers, they explain. During the Matrimony Days, these politicians seek to spotlight the heritage of women in the Brussels Capital Region. I think of my route to work, which starts at Poelaertplein/ place Poelaert, named after the architect Joseph Poelaert. Beside it stands his greatest achievement, the enormous Palace of Justice, which is visible from across the city. My final destination is Flageyplein/place Flagey, named after Eugène Flagey, a liberal who was mayor of Elsene/Ixelles for more than twenty years. In between lies Louizalaan/avenue Louise. I hear you thinking: but she was a woman. And you’re right, Louise Marie Amélie was the first-born child of King Leopold II and Queen Marie Henriette. But her only achievement was that she was the daughter of a king. Every day we walk through the city as the grandfathers, fathers, and “daughters of…” look over our shoulder. I’m not saying that there are no streets or public squares named after women. There is rue Marie Popelinstraat in Sint-Joost-ten-Node/ Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, for example, or place Marie-Jansonplein in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles, or rue Audrey Hepburnstraat in Jette. And soon there will also be a rue Chantal Akermanstraat and pont Suzan Danielbrug, no doubt partly due to political pressure, the press, and the Noms Peut-Être! collective, which has taken to the streets to install new street name signs. Street names are a way to show who we think is important as a city. And there is plenty of room to add more matrimony to Brussels’s patrimony. In the capital of surrealism, a public commemoration of Irène Hamoir, one of the co-founders of the surrealist movement, is indispensable in my opinion. And it would not be inappropriate for Brussels to honour other women too, like Marie Delcourt-Derscheid, the first woman to study medicine at the ULB, or Marguerite De Riemaecker- Legot, the first female minister of State, who was a city councillor for the City of Brussels.

Op 31 mei zou Rainer Werner Fassbinder 75 geworden zijn. Flagey herneemt tot het zover is negen films van het filmgenie dat de mens en naoorlogs Duitsland genadeloos fileerde. — NIELS RUËLL

Rainer Werner Fassbinder was amper 37 en de jaren 1980 waren nog niet op kruissnelheid toen er een abrupt einde kwam aan een passioneel leven vol seks, drugs, drank en kunst. In die korte tijd in het ondermaanse had hij zo’n veertig films geregisseerd, meestal op basis van een zelf geschreven scenario, dertien toneelstukken, een tv-serie die geschiedenis schreef (Berlin Alexanderplatz) en genoeg essays om een doctoraatsstudent zoet te houden. De niet in te tomen en manipulatieve kunstenaar zou al lang vergeten zijn, ware het niet dat een groot deel van dat oeuvre amper aan kracht heeft ingeboet. De scorende spits van de Neue Deutsche Welle (zie ook Volker Schlöndorff, Werner Herzog en Wim Wenders) had een lucide, meedogenloze kijk op de mensen, de liefde, West-Duitsland en het morele bankroet dat gepaard ging met het Wirtschaftswunder. Bovenal had hij de gave om die kijk te verwerken in meeslepende films. Tomeloos ambitieus – hij wilde de Shakespeare, Marx of Freud van de cinema zijn – trachtte Fassbinder een groot publiek te bereiken. Die bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant (foto) is een schitterend melodrama over de turbulente relatie tussen een succesvolle modeontwerpster en een van haar modellen. Angst essen Seele auf, gemodelleerd naar All that heaven allows van Hollywood-virtuoos Douglas Sirk, toont hoe de Duitse samenleving de liefde tussen een eenzame Duitse en een Turkse migrant in de kiem smoort. Het schitterend gefotografeerde Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss beeldt de

laatste dagen uit van een filmdiva met een duister verleden die niet doorziet hoe een dokteres haar morfineverslaving uitbuit. Flagey herneemt niet alleen klassiekers: gevorderden kunnen zich wagen aan de broeierige homofilm Querelle, het bikkelharde Faustrecht der Freiheit of Despair, de Engelstalige adaptatie van een roman van Nabokov. Fassbinder durfde de wanhoop in de ogen te kijken en daar kan u rücksichtslos van profiteren.

Fassbinder avait un regard lucide et sans pitié sur les gens, l’amour, l’Allemagne de l’Ouest et la faillite morale allant de pair avec le « miracle économique ». Le 31 mai, Fassbinder aurait fêté son 75e anniversaire. En prévision de cette date, Flagey présente neuf films de ce génie désinvolte. FR

Guy Ritchie a gagné sa vie ces dernières années en mettant en boîte des superproductions hollywoodiennes comme la version live-action d’Aladdin, The Man From U.N.C.L.E et les films de Sherlock Holmes avec Robert Downey Jr. Mais sur tous ces projets, l’ex de Madonna demeurait interchangeable. Avec The Gentlemen, il revient au genre qu’il a inventé à la fin des années nontante : la comédie brutale britannique qui s’efforce de rester cool, se surpasse pour vous divertir et copie en partie les premiers films de Tarantino. Le genre n’a pas fait long feu. Les formules dont s’est servi Ritchie pour son succès Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels sont devenues de plus en plus aqueuses. The Gentlemen est une tentative louable mais aussi éprouvante de renouer avec le succès d’antan. L’intrigue est trop tordue, certaines subtilités tombent à plat, mais il se passe beaucoup de choses à un rythme soutenu, les acteurs chevronnés savent tirer avantage des dialogues acérés et le cameraman de l’action. Un peu quitte ou double comme les pintes sans col en mousse servies en Angleterre. (NR)

The American chemical giant DuPont uses perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) for Teflon, the immensely successful product that we know primarily from the non-stick layer on pans. PFOA has two downsides: it does not decompose and it causes various diseases. DuPont kept this secret for years and dumped the waste chemicals in the surroundings of the Teflon factory in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Robert Bilott, a lawyer hired by a farmer with sick cattle, who was used to working with big corporations, discovered the horrifying truth, but the billion-dollar company stubbornly refused to desist. It preferred to cover everything up and fight a legal battle for years. Actor Mark Ruffalo, the Hulk during his office hours, but an eco and left-wing activist otherwise, supported the adaptation of this climate scandal to the big screen. He himself plays the lead role, lawyer Bilott, and had the surprising but very good idea to ask Todd Haynes to direct. The stylist behind gems like Carol and Far from Heaven applies his skills to a well-told story with a sinister atmosphere that continues to haunt you afterwards. Murky. (NR)

De plot is overdreven kronkelig en sommige slimmigheden komen dom over. Maar er gebeurt wel lekker veel in een hoog tempo, de acteurs weten raad met spitse praat en de cameraman met de actie.

Hulk-acteur Mark Ruffalo zette zijn schouders onder de verfilming. Hij speelt zelf de hoofdrol, advocaat Bilott, en had het goede idee om Todd Haynes als regisseur te vragen. De stilist achter juweeltjes als Carol en Far from heaven stelt zich ten dienste van een correcte uiteenzetting met een sinistere sfeer die lang blijft hangen. Troeblerend.

Lately, Guy Ritchie has primarily been making his living in Hollywood, but he is now returning to the genre that he invented in the late 1990s: the British gangster comedy. The Gentlemen is a creditable but also tiring effort to relive the success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The plot is excessively convoluted and some of the clever little tricks just seem dumb. But then again, a lot of exciting things happen very quickly, the actors deftly handle the snappy dialogue, and the cameraman excels in the action scenes.

Les héros dérisoires Deborah Bowmann invite le jeune artiste britannique Jamie Fitzpatrick pour une première exposition bruxelloise qui traduit le monde de l’entertainment comme un cabaret grotesque et vulnérable. — GILLES BECHET On ne sait rien d’eux. Peut-être se sont-ils croisés dans le hall d’un grand hôtel de Las Vegas. Puis, ils ont sympathisé autour d’un Peach Brandy. Le grand, avec son chapeau, c’est le Magicien. On a quand même envie de voir ses pouvoirs parce que sans bras, il aura besoin d’un coup de main. Au fond, assis par terre, une guitare sur les genoux, le sexe dressé, il y a le chéri, un chanteur de charme avec une veste blanche à sequins. Il y a du Elvis là-dedans. Il a la tête d’un personnage

de cartoon qui sort d’un tunnel à 100 kilomètres-heure. Il porte encore deux têtes bien coiffées. Il ne faut pas attendre trop longtemps pour l’entendre chanter a capella, soliloquer et sangloter aussi. Le Magicien lui répond parfois brièvement dans une conversation qui semble extraite d’un Beckett oublié. Sinon, l’homme nous apprend comment nouer une cravate et assurer. Jamie Fitzpatrick aime le grotesque. Cela saute aux yeux dans ses deux sculptures animées de

héros dérisoires. La bouche tremblante, les automates lâchent par intermittence des bouts de conversation que l’artiste britannique a lui-même enregistrés. Jamie Fitzpatrick, qu’on avait pu voir à Poppositions, aime les personnages qui défient la prétention liée à l’autorité et au pouvoir. Ses sculptures, où il mélange la mousse, le polystyrène et la cire colorée, ont un côté inachevé comme un croquis en trois dimensions prêt à se décomposer. Ce qui accentue en même temps la vulnérabilité cachée derrière la suffisance minable. Et la couverture de cire n’est pas sans rappeler la séduction tout sucre des grandes pièces montées de pâtisserie couvertes de crème. Les deux sculptures présentées à Bruxelles appartiennent à une série plus large sur les figures de la masculinité. Elles sont accompagnées de trois grands dessins qui prolongent cet univers fantasque de cabaret satirique. Habituellement présentées en extérieur, les deux sculptures ont été posées sur un parquet tout droit sorti d’un cartoon avec ses grosses veines de bois gravées à même les planches. En mai, elles seront représentées à l’Antwerp Art Weekend dans un show ayant pour curatrice Deborah Bowmann. Are you lonesome tonight ?

In Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek, Le Wappers is restoring glory to a disappearing genre: the tavern. Encased in solid furniture, these places, once filled with smoke, are no longer at the top of their game. It’s a pity because, at a time when social ties are crumbling due to our highly individualized culture, such convivial spaces are needed all the more. Fortunately, a few pockets of resistance remain, and others are being created. That’s what’s happening in Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek where Le Wappers is being

brought back to life by Bernard Leboucq, one of the owners of Brasserie de la Senne who is particularly active within his neighbourhood. The laminated drinks menu with a neo-propagandist design by the excellent graphic artist Jean Goovaerts, informed us that Gustave Wappers (1803-1874) was the official painter of king Leopold I, which is appropriate because this establishment is as picturesque as

can be. It’s all there: the entranceway covered in stickers, solid wooden chairs, wood cladding, light fixtures with chains and fake candles, ceiling beams, and white plaster. The light fixture made from a painter’s pallet is a delightful detail. The authenticity of the place is confirmed by features like the massive counter with various beers on tap, such as the excellent Zenne Pils for €2 and Jambe-de-bois (€3.50), for people who like strong

sensations, and the obligatory TV. In other words, a genuine proper tavern that’s guaranteed to make you feel at home. The drinks selection includes a selection of Trappist beers, classics (for example, Rodenbach for €3), and, above all, an aperitif of their own that’s worth checking out, made with Campari and Jambe-de-bois (€4.50). Good news, the place also offers a range of unpretentious snacks. There’s an unmissable “bolo” for €10, a carbonara for €11 (in which the lardons are replaced by guanciale, the fashionable Italian pork cheek), and a generous croque-monsieur (€9.50) that combines smoked spiering and three types of cheese. We also like the “omelette of the day” option, which varies in price depending on the ingredients (€7 for the plain version). We wish this place a long life.
