NL/ Het jaar dendert in een rotvaart naar de eindmeet. Wie denkt het in de laatste etappe te moeten stellen met glühwein op de kerstmarkt, een rit op het reuzenrad en een bezoek aan de kerstboom heeft het mis. Deze Select heeft weer heel wat cultureel moois te bieden. Dit keer niet voor één maar meteen voor twee maanden. Met het regisseurskoppel Charlotte Vandermeersch en Felix Van Groeningen vergapen we ons aan de pracht van de Italiaanse bergen. Kunstenares Géraldine Tobe speelt voor haar expo met vuur. De meisjes van BLUAI hullen het eindejaar in een dromerige soundtrack. En binnenkijken doen we bij Emilien Vekemans: de Brusselse acteur die naam maakt in de Netflix-serie The bastard son & the devil himself.

Et on s’invite chez Emilien Vekemans : l’acteur bruxellois qui se fait un nom grâce à la série Netflix The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself.

FRIZBEE CERAMICS maakt zijn kleurige tafelservies met behulp van frisbees en basketballen. Perfecte gasten voor een showcase in MAD Brussels.

Lisa Egio en Elliot Kervyn begonnen in 2017 als kunstenaarsduo met Frizbee Ceramics.

Ondertussen zijn ze in hun atelier in Espace Triphasé aan de Poincarélaan met vijf mensen in de weer om hun felgekleurde porseleinen kopjes, schalen en borden te produceren, in gelimiteerde oplagen die aftrek vinden over de hele wereld.

Frizbee Ceramics doet wat denken aan gooien met servies. Dat verraadt een ludieke insteek.

Plezier maken is inderdaad belangrijk. Wij werken met bestaande voorwerpen als mal voor onze vormen. De kommen zijn gemaakt met oude basketballen als mal, en de borden maken we met frisbees. Behalve dat ludieke aspect speelt ook de vaststelling dat er al zoveel bestaande vormen zijn, dat we die beter als basis kunnen gebruiken dan er nieuwe te creëren.

Behalve de vorm zijn er ook de licht psychedelische kleuren en motieven.

We werken niet alleen met porselein door de kwaliteit van het materiaal, maar ook omdat het zich goed leent voor onze tekeningen. Het aardewerk wordt zo een beetje als een wit blad waar we op kunnen werken. De designs zijn heel spontaan. De kleurige ontwerpen zorgen er ook voor dat mensen die onze producten kopen er meer aan gehecht raken en er meer zorg voor dragen.

Keramiek is in, en past in onze hernieuwde interesse voor het artisanale, het duurzame en het lokale. Hoe moeilijk is het om kwaliteitsvol ambachtelijk porselein te produceren?

Onze stukken zijn uniek in die zin dat ze met de hand gekleurd worden, maar er moet wel een duidelijke lijn in de ontwerpen zitten en dat is best een uitdaging. Uiteindelijk kan het technische procedé van drogen en bakken altijd kleine verrassingen opleveren. Je weet nooit helemaal wat het resultaat zal zijn, en dus is het ook niet zo vanzelfsprekend om ontwerpen te herhalen. In België is er ook geen porseleinindustrie meer en dus zijn er weinig voorbeelden en referenties. Wij werken met Duitse leveranciers en met veel trial-and-error.

‘Nous n’avons pas qu’un problème de mobilité à Bruxelles’

J’ai commencé à faire du théâtre sans le savoir. C’était à Montréal, en 2007. Déjà c’était bizarre car on nous présentait comme les « Belges ». En Belgique on ne nous voyait pas vraiment comme ça. J’ai utilisé le passé, je ne sais même pas pourquoi. Bref, j’étais là pour comprendre comment lutter contre le racisme, et l’animateur-sociologue-metteur en scène mobilisait le théâtre-action comme outil de réflexion partagée sur les « brèches » qui peuvent mener à briser les murs des inégalités sociales.

Je me retrouve à discuter avec un chercheur haïtien qui m’assène avec aplomb que « la rationalité est un concept raciste ». À ce moment-là, je suis vaguement étudiant en sciences économiques où j’ai appris le concept d’ « homo œconomicus », qui est satisfait en maximisant son propre intérêt. Je lui réponds, en essayant d’avoir autant d’assurance que lui : oui il y a bien une rationalité et elle n’a rien de raciste. Par exemple, pour aller du point A au point B, il y a un chemin qui est le plus rationnel, celui qui permet d’aller le plus vite.

C’est une rationalité, me répond-il, mais il peut y en avoir d’autres. Je peux chercher le chemin qui coûte le moins cher. Celui qui fait voir de beaux paysages. Celui qui fait passer par la famille. Celui qui est le moins fatigant.

Interrompue par un moment de pause avec des muffins triple chocolat, la discussion est restée inachevée, en pointillé.

AU TEMPS DES VIEUX SCHNOCKS

MOHAMED SALIM HAOUACH est auteur, comédien et directeur artistique du collectif de théâtre molenbeekois Ras El Hanout. Tous les deux mois, il écrit sur la vie dans sa ville.

Il est vrai qu’on a longtemps envisagé le déplacement du point A au point B sous le critère de la rationalité, entendu comme celui de la rapidité, et donc en voiture. C’est pour cela que de nombreux·euses Bruxellois·ses d’origine ont déserté la capitale pour s’installer en deuxième couronne, en périphérie ou plus loin, en conservant leur emploi dans la capitale, en faisant la navette en voiture et en payant leurs impôts dans la commune de leur logement plus confortable, plus grand, plus spacieux, plus vert, etc.

J’ai grandi à Molenbeek. Bien sûr il y avait des habitant·e·s d’origine marocaine, et à cette époque-là marocain·ne·s tout court. Mais il y avait beaucoup d’autres personnes. Je m’en souviens car je m’amusais à déranger les « vieux schnocks » en appuyant tous les boutons des parlophones. Il y avait des noms à consonance flamande, italienne, francophone. Puis, progressivement, de moins en moins.

Ces quartiers sont en perpétuel mouvement. Les familles d’origine marocaine suivent le même trajet que les précédentes. Tout en conservant le lien. On est un·e ancien·e si on a grandi dans un quartier comme celui de la gare de Schaerbeek, même si on habite aujourd’hui à Kraainem. Et d’autres familles arrivent, apportant de la diversité dans la précarité ou bien de la gentrification.

Et avec tout ça, et ces frontières étriquées d’une région-capitale qui porte dans son nom le sens du compromis contradictoire à la belge, qui décide de comment on se déplace du point A au point B ? Les Bruxellois·es d’origine, les ancien·nes, les actuel·les ? Juste les personnes qui participent à une réunion de quartier en ligne ? Une majorité des habitant·e·s d’une rue, d’un quartier, d’une commune ?

Est-ce bien rationnel qu’il faille recueillir l’assentiment d’une majorité d’habitant·e·s pour changer le nom de la rue Vanderlinden, mais pas pour en changer le sens de circulation ou y poser des blocs de béton ?

Selon le type d’action ou de personnes, est-il plus rationnel de parler de désobéissance civile ou d’émeute ?

Nous n’avons pas qu’un problème de mobilité à Bruxelles.

‘Het leven mag niet zomaar wat kabbelen’ NL/ Aan De acht bergen zou een waarschuwing moeten voorafgaan: deze film kan uw bergzucht ernstig aanwakkeren. Een gesprek over de bergen die regisseurs Charlotte Vandermeersch en Felix Van Groeningen samen hebben verzet. Voor hun prachtfilm. Voor elkaar.

en tip voor wie op zeevakantie wil: boek je trip voor je naar De acht bergen gaat kijken. Want daarna wil je de bergen in trekken, de Alpen in de Valle d’Aosta om precies te zijn. Zo ervoer het Festival van Cannes het toch, want het schonk de Prix du Jury aan de adembenemende boekverfilming. Een Italiaan, Paolo Cognetti, zette een persoonlijke ervaring om in een gekoesterde roman over de jarenlange vriendschap tussen stadsjongen Pietro en bergjongen Bruno, te midden van de woeste schoonheid van de soms onbarmhartige bergen. Maar een Belgisch koppel zette de Alpen-vriendschap in cinema om. Van Felix Van Groeningen is geweten dat hij aangrijpende films kan maken, met De helaasheid der dingen en The broken circle breakdown als voorbeelden. De verrassing is dat Charlotte Vandermeersch dit keer medereisleider was, de actrice die vlot theater (Lazarus), series (Deadline), film (Belgica, De premier) en tv-avonturen (Over de 10

oceaan) afwisselt. Een reconstructie van hun tocht naar de top.

Alles begint bij die roman van Paolo Cognetti.

Wat maakte die los?

FELIX VAN GROENINGEN: Al lezend werd ik door alsmaar meer kleine en grote dingen geraakt, er zijn veel persoonlijke raakvlakken. Ik heb een bijzondere plek in Frankrijk, waar ik al heel mijn leven heen ga. Op die berg woont een neef die de wereld is rondgereisd. Hij is een soort van Bruno.

De bouw van een huis in familieverband was een belangrijk moment in mijn leven. De door Cognetti beschreven vriendschap tussen twee mannen vind ik erg herkenbaar. Het gevoel iemand zo goed te kennen en samen perfect op je gemak te zijn, maar ineens toch een grote afstand ervaren tot iemand die je zo heeft geïnspireerd en geholpen in je leven. Dat moeten we accepteren.

Cognetti beschrijft het waanzinnig goed. En het einde is hartverscheurend.

Even begeesterd, Charlotte?

CHARLOTTE VANDERMEERSCH: Het boek is een cadeau voor makers. Zoveel lagen zijn erin verweven. In welk gezin ben ik geboren? Waar kom ik vandaan? Hoe vind ik mijn plek? Hoe spiegel ik mij aan de andere? Wie ben ik voor de andere? Wat kan ik betekenen voor de andere?

Heb ik een lotsbestemming of niet? Welke band heb ik met mijn vader en met mijn moeder? Wat verwachten die van mij? Hoe ga ik met die verwachtingen om? Hoe laat je kwaadheid los?

Hoe vergeef je? Hoe rouw je? Hoe verwerk je verdriet?

VAN GROENINGEN: Blijven gaan, Charlotte!

VANDERMEERSCH: Het houdt niet op. Natuur versus cultuur. Mens versus natuur én de vraag waarom we een onderscheid maken tussen onszelf en de natuur. Een heel actueel thema.

Wat nog? De oude manier van leven tegenover een modernere! Je tegen de oudere manier afzetten of net een nieuwe manier vinden om de

oude wijsheden mee te nemen in het leven van vandaag.

En dan is er nog een overkoepelende, onbevattelijke laag: nietig zijn in de wereld en tegelijk één met die wereld. De spirituele of meditatieve kwaliteit van de bergen en de seizoenen die voorbijgaan. Daar voel ik me heel erg toe aangetrokken.

Op 28 mei moest je als regisseuse het podium van het Festival van Cannes op om de ‘Prix du Jury’ in ontvangst te nemen. De korte versie van hoe die dag er gekomen is?

VANDERMEERSCH: Felix is een workaholic. Jaren geleden bleek hij tijdens een vakantie “toch te moeten werken”. Ik heb eerst gezucht en dan gezegd dat het goed was als we samen zouden werken. Het werd een bijzonder fijne ervaring.

Eén die voor herhaling vatbaar was. Het kwam er alleen niet van. We hadden elk eigen projecten en Felix trok naar Amerika (voor Beautiful boy met Timothée Chalamet als drugsverslaafde zoon, red.).

In de covidtijd waren er geen uitwijkmogelijkheden. Felix kreeg het aanbod om De acht bergen te verfilmen. Na een heel intens gezamenlijk schrijfproces waren we erg tevreden over het eerste scenario. Aan de keukentafel stelde Felix voor om het project van A tot Z samen te doen. Ik zei ja, ik weet nog altijd niet waarom. Ik vind niet dat ik per se moet regisseren, maar het leek zinnig om dat grote, Italiaanse project samen te trekken.

Zoals je weet, worstelden we als koppel met de vraag of we onze tocht samen wilden voortzetten of niet. We besloten De acht bergen-tocht samen aan te vatten. We wilden dat als koppel doen. En het deed ook effectief deugd om op een heel schone manier aan iets hogers te werken.

Letterlijk hoger. Jullie hebben maanden in het Aostadal geleefd en trokken meermaals de bergen in.

VANDERMEERSCH: Je kan niet zomaar ergens

aankomen en filmen. Authenticiteit zuig je niet uit je duim. We zijn meer dan eens naar daar gereisd om de omgeving, de mensen, hun gevoeligheden en gewoontes, de bergen, de seizoenen, te leren kennen.

We hebben er deze zomer onze film vertoond in een oud kerkje en alle betrokkenen, vrienden, ouders, gidsen en helpers persoonlijk opgebeld.

De ouders van Paolo Cognetti waren erbij, en zijn beste vrienden. Het was een intieme, warme avond met veel eten en drinken. De mensen zagen hun eigen jeugd weerspiegeld. Daar raakten ze door ontroerd. Ze herkenden een oude wijze van leven. De film honoreert de oude gebruiken en beroepen die ook onder druk staan.

Jullie film past net als het boek voor een te grote of naïeve romantisering van het leven in berggebied. Hebben jullie ook zelf ondervonden

dat de bergen gevaarlijk kunnen zijn?

VAN GROENINGEN: Erg snel. We wisten dat het niet evident zou zijn, maar ook dat we er meteen moesten invliegen. De zomers zijn kort, en we zijn geen echte berggeiten. We voelden hoe moeilijk het was om sommige interessante locaties te bereiken. Toen we met de helikopter naar een gletsjer vlogen, dacht ik ‘wauw’, maar vroeg ik me ook af hoe we in hemelsnaam een filmploeg tot daar zouden krijgen. Ook voor de mensen van de productie was het zoeken.

Daarom hebben we snel lokaal aansluiting gezocht, bij vrienden van Paolo Cognetti, bij gidsen, mensen die al heel hun leven in de bergen wonen. Zonder hen zou het niet gelukt zijn. We hebben de grenzen opgezocht.

Waarom zochten jullie die grenzen op?

VAN GROENINGEN: Dat we prachtig materiaal hadden én de wilskracht, de goesting en drang naar schoonheid om er iets prachtigs van te maken, daar waren we gerust in. Maar het was nooit vanzelfsprekend. De bergen zijn gevaarlijk.

Er zijn medewerkers uitgevallen. Een stom ongeluk is rap gebeurd en de consequenties zijn meteen groot in de bergen.

We wilden het avontuur aangaan in plaats van te kiezen voor de gemakkelijkheidsoplossing. We wilden op de gletsjer filmen en op pieken die moeilijk te bereiken zijn met ons materiaal.

Logistiek was het héftig. We hebben daadwerkelijk een huis gebouwd op 2.200 meter hoogte. De acteurs hebben de tochten afgelegd, sliepen in de

aan? Wat doen we samen? Er is geen voorbedacht plan. We volgen onze intuïtie en tasten af.

refugio. We zijn echt naar Nepal gereisd. We hadden van bij het begin het gevoel dat het zo moest zijn. De belevenis moest in de film sluipen.

De acht bergen roept het verlangen op naar een rustiger, eenvoudiger leven. Hoe gaan jullie daar zelf mee om? Er valt toch ook wat te zeggen om zoveel mogelijk uit het leven te halen?

VAN GROENINGEN: De Alpen intrekken, het klimaat ontdekken en de mensen die er wonen, ons onderdompelen in het leven ter plaatse en in de thematiek van de film, mij heeft dat veel deugd gedaan. Ik kom uit een best donkere periode, er was wat shit tussen ons. Ik was écht naar iets puurs op zoek. Zonder cynisme. Het boek, de personages en die plek hebben dat in zich. Ik wil voortaan kiezen voor dingen die dat met mij doen. Een film is twee, drie jaar van je leven.

Soms dag én nacht bij mij. Zuivere keuzes zijn belangrijk.

VANDERMEERSCH: We zijn op dit moment allebei actief op zoek naar innerlijke rust. We zijn verhuisd van Antwerpen naar een plek met veel groen en toch nog een gemeenschap. Het huis ligt vol yogamatten en meditatiekussens.

Pogingen genoeg. We zijn allebei high-maintenance. We verwachten veel van het leven. Het mag niet zomaar wat kabbelen. Thuis moet het stabiel zijn, een nest. Onze zoon mag niet de hele tijd stress voelen van ons met vlagen jachtige leven. We bekijken nog wat de nieuwe projecten worden. Hoe ga ik dat aan? Hoe gaat Felix dat

Véél mensen vinden De acht bergen erg goed.

Sommigen houden er zielsveel van. Hebben jullie er een idee van welk mensen er het hardst door worden aangegrepen?

VANDERMEERSCH: Als mensen al een ervaring hebben met ‘naar de bergen gaan’, vallen ze meestal als een blok voor de film. Dat komen ze ons gretig vertellen. Ook het thema vriendschap raakt bij sommigen een gevoelige snaar. De film schept ruimte om over je eigen leven en vriendschappen na te denken. “Wat heb ik al gedaan? Wie draag ik nog in mijn hart,” vraagt de kijker zich af. Dat effect vind ik superfijn. Het deed ook ons enorm deugd om daar via de film over na te denken.

VAN GROENINGEN: Daarnaast is er ook iets met de bergen en de dood. Op elke piek hangen er doodsprentjes. Van mensen die in de bergen omgekomen zijn of van geliefden die elders zijn gestorven. Tijdens een van mijn grotere bergtochten – met een vriend – had ik hoog op een berg een bijna religieuze ervaring. Uitgeput, trots en bevangen. Een gevoel van overgave; daar rust in vinden. Schoonheid ervaren en daar enorm door geraakt zijn. Ik dénk dat het gelukt is om dat in de film te verweven.

De helaasheid der dingen zette de Cannes’ Quinzaine des réalisateurs onder stroom. The broken circle breakdown werd voor een Oscar genomineerd en je regisseerde Steve Carell en Timothée Chalamet in Beautiful boy. Je hebt al verschillende mooie avonturen achter de rug.

Hoe schat je die juryprijs van Cannes in?

VAN GROENINGEN: Ik ben er heel trots op. Alles kwam wonderlijk mooi samen. We hadden de hoop op een prijs al opgegeven. Het was al middag toen we alsnog telefoon kregen en halsoverkop terug naar Cannes moesten. De film was dan wel heel goed onthaald, maar uiteindelijk beslissen negen juryleden met hun hart. Een van hen vertelde nadien dat hij kapot was van onze film. Hij wilde keihard dat we de Gouden Palm wonnen.

We hebben het geluk gehad om dat te mogen meemaken en we hebben het gevoel dat de film dat verdient. Maar het is ook máár dat. Het is super voor de film, maar daar mogen we niet bij blijven hangen. Voetjes op de grond en doordoen.

VANDERMEERSCH: Voetjes op de grond en doordoen? (Proest het uit) Sorry Felix, dat vind ik hilarisch! Je bent een goeie, Vlaams gekweekte jongen!

Het getuigt tegelijk ook van ambitie. Op naar de negende berg.

Op 6 december zal het precies vijf jaar Van zijn jongenskamer tot zijn werktageleden zijn dat Johnny Hallyday op CONSTERNATIE OP DE WERKLOCATIE fel in Marnes-la-Coquette, waar hij de 74-jarige leeftijd het tijdelijke voor het laatste momenten van zijn leven eeuwige inruilde. Daarmee hield hij het doorbracht: zijn weduwe (en vierde toch een dikke drie decennia langer uit echtgenote) Laeticia heeft haar dan zijn grote held Elvis Presley. Na uiterste best gedaan om ze op een zo Johnny par Johnny, de docuserie over zijn authentiek mogelijke manier te leven op Netflix, is er nu Johnny Hallyday verplanten naar de Heizel. Naast l’exposition. De nabestaanden van de souvenirs en foto’s reserveerde ze een plek vedette lijken te willen bewijzen dat hij voor een vijftigtal podiumoutfits en zestig (!) geen Graceland nodig heeft om zijn gitaren. Ook het parcours waarlangs je materiële aanwezigheid op deze planeet passeert met een audiogids, ingesproken door blijvend gestalte te geven. De erfenis van de acteur Jean Reno, neemt de vorm aan van een Franstalige king of rock ‘n’ roll wordt zorgvuldig gitaar. Persoonlijke documenten figureren naast zijn heropgebouwd (en weer afgebroken) in Paleis 2 van paspoort, greencard en legerdocumenten, maar ook het Brussels Expo. Om volgend jaar hetzelfde lot te ondergaan eerste contract dat Hallyday tekende met Bruno Coquatrix, directeur in het Parc des Expositions aan de Porte de Versailles in Parijs. Zo van de Parijse concerttempel Olympia. Al zullen bezoekers vast meer krijgen vader- en moederland een glimp te zien van wat ooit was. oog hebben voor zijn Cobra-sportwagen en Harley’s.

Jean-Philippe Smet – zeg maar Johnny, of Jojo voor de fans – was Vier silhouetten van Hallyday luiden op de expo telkens een de zoon van een Belgische vader en een Franse moeder, die al ander tijdperk in zijn carrière in, inclusief lijflied. Volgens snel weer uit elkaar gingen. Hij werd opgevoed door zijn tante in artistiek directeur Eric Clavier moet vooral de energie van de een familie van rondreizende showdansers. Daar pikte hij de rockster opnieuw tot leven komen. In samenspraak met Benoît artiestennaam Hallyday op, om door te groeien tot de succesvolRemiche van tentoonstellingsbureau Tempora en scenografe ste Franstalige rockster aller tijden, met meer dan honderd Clémence Farrell bouwde hij een expo die het rockicoon vijf jaar miljoen verkochte platen. In dat perspectief moet je ook het na zijn dood wilde heruitvinden, “zoals hij ook tijdens zijn leven expobudget van twaalf miljoen euro zien, en de 1,2 miljoen zichzelf voortdurend heruitvond.” Volgens Clavier moet de expo (!) bezoekers die Brussel en Parijs samen verwachaanvoelen als een optreden. Benieuwd of ze daar met de ten. Voor de francofone wereld is Hallyday interactieve, immersieve technologische mogelijkheden onaantastbaar, ook na zijn dood. ‘Enfant, la danse était la seule chose que j’avais l’impression de faire bien’ PORTRAIT

FR/ Après un parcours sans faute dans les sphères du hiphop et de la scène contemporaine, le Français SOFIANE CHALAL signe sa première création. Dans Ma Part d’Ombre, il retrace en mouvements (mais pas seulement) le fil de sa carrière de danseur au physique XXL. Texte Sophie Soukias

« Avec le corps que j’ai, je n’y croyais pas une seule seconde. Aujourd’hui, j’ai confiance à 1000 pour cent.» Confiance ou pas confiance, Sofiane Chalal n’a jamais cessé de danser. Dès l’âge de 7 ans, le Maubeugeois danse à la maison avec ses frères avant de rejoindre leur compagnie de danse hip-hop Label Métisse et de se produire sur les scènes du nord de la France à l’occasion de spectacles et de concours chorégraphiques.

Le succès de la compagnie les mène vers des scènes nationales comme le théâtre parisien de La Villette, où ils assurent la première partie du chorégraphe et compositeur Frank II Louise qui joue son spectacle phare Drop It. Pour Sofiane Chalal, qui a une douzaine d’années à l’époque, 16

c’est un nouveau monde qui s’ouvre à lui, celui de la création contemporaine. « Ça a été une révélation de découvrir que la danse pouvait être au service d’un propos, d’une narration.»

LA VIE COMME UN BATTLE Alors que ses frères abandonnent chacun à leur tour les planches, Sofiane Chalal continue de s’accrocher à sa principale source de bonheur et de réconfort. « Je n’étais pas une lumière à l’école alors je me réfugiais dans la danse, dans ces moments où j’excellais et où j’avais le sentiment de faire quelque chose de bien.» Pour aller au bout de son rêve, il entreprend de se faire un nom dans la scène hip-hop et enchaîne les battles en France et à l’étranger, notamment de l’autre côté de la frontière, en Belgique.

Rapidement, le danseur maubeugeois s’impose grâce à une maîtrise technique combinée à un style bien à lui. En 2008, il est finaliste du prestigieux battle international Juste Debout, dix ans plus tard, il est vainqueur des Red Bull Dance Your Style. En parallèle, Sofiane Chalal intègre les jurys de battles et multiplie les cours de danse en tant que professeur. La reconnaissance est au rendez-vous mais un manque se fait ressentir. « J’en ai eu marre, je n’apprenais plus.

Je donnais tout mais personne ne me ‘rendait’.»

PRENDRE SA PLACE « Ce que je voulais, c’était être sur scène, raconter des histoires.» Au fil des auditions, il devient interprète pour des noms de la danse contemporaine tels que Farid Berki, Christophe Piret et Brahim Bouchelaghem. Jusqu’à ce que l’envie se dessine de monter sa propre création. Ainsi

naissait Ma Part d’Ombre. Un premier solo très personnel, « intime même », où le corps de Sofiane Chalal se raconte et se confie. « C’est l’histoire d’un danseur gros qui avance et qui se défend avec son corps atypique. Je danse et je dis comment je suis arrivé jusqu’ici, mais aussi tous les projets sur lesquels j’ai dû faire une croix à cause de mon physique. Ça ravive des blessures, mais je choisis de les traiter par l’humour. » Sur scène, la face cachée de Sofiane Chalal, sa part d’ombre, est en constant dialogue avec lui-même. « Au début, mon personnage est un peu renfermé mais au fur et à mesure du spectacle, il s’ouvre, il s’épanouit. Il prend sa place dans la vie, la société, sa famille.»

Laissant galoper ses mains avec l’habileté d’un mime, plaçant au détour quelques clins d’oeil à Chaplin, à de Funès et au cinéma en général (ses courtes mises en scènes, filmées et postées sur Instagram, lui ont valu d’être repéré par Michèle Laroque et de collaborer à la comédie française Alors on Danse, sortie en 2021), Sofiane Chalal honore sa base hip-hop tout en laissant son corps mener la danse. « Je ne dis pas que j’ai inventé des choses, mais je fais ce qui m’est propre. Le fait d’être gros donne une autre dimension à mon mouvement », dit le danseur. « Soit tu rencontres des gens époustouflés par ce que ce que tu fais, soit tu tombes sur des gens qui ne te calculent même pas. Ça a toujours été comme ça. Il faut gérer ces émotions extrêmes, mais on s’y fait et on avance. Géraldine Tobe souffle un feu ancestral dans ses toiles

‘J’avoue que j’ai demandé la mort’ FR/ Des accusations de sorcellerie, de la torture, des sessions d’exorcisme, un accident qui lui a brûlé la moitié du corps… Rien de tout cela n’a empêché la plasticienne congolaise Géraldine Tobe de devenir qui elle est. Rencontre avec la jeune peintre kinoise qui met le feu à ses toiles animées.

e doit être le calme avant la tempête.

Le moment où tout est sur le point de s’écrouler avec la force de mille coups de vent. Ce qui est en perspective à la Lever House va venir se fracasser contre les murs majestueux avec une force inouïe, fendre le marbre multicolore pompeux, renvoyer la façade délabrée dans un intérieur en ruine. C’est en tout cas l’impression donnée par Kalunga, l’imposante exposition monographique que la plasticienne congolaise Géraldine Tobe met sur pied ici en collaboration avec la VUB. L’impression d’un puissant enchantement, d’un génie sorti de sa lampe qui hante cet espace proche de la Colonne du Congrès.

La Lever House, aujourd’hui un campus pour les étudiant.e.s de l’Institut Supérieur Industriel de Bruxelles, plonge dans le passé colonial. C’est un souvenir construit de marbre, de bronze et à l’aide de la fortune amassée par les frères

britanniques Lever, avec l’autorisation du gouvernement belge, grâce à l’huile de palme extraite au Congo. Une fusion avec la compagnie néerlandaise de Margarine Unie donnera naissance à la multinationale Unilever.

Géraldine Tobe insuffle une mémoire vivante à ce contexte figé. Des corps quasi liquides sont suspendus en plein mouvement, fiers, menaçants, se métamorphosant, déchirés, enchevêtrés, donnant la vie, prenant la vie, se dissipant comme des esprits. « Comme la fumée », approuve-t-elle. « Ce bâtiment colonial représente le passé. Le fait que moi, une jeune artiste de Kinshasa, je le remplisse avec une expo, prouve qu’il y a un travail qui est en train de se faire. Attribuer à cela le terme de décolonisation, c’est peut-être aller un peu loin, mais c’est un pas vers la positivité. » « Le plus important, pour moi, ce n’est pas de faire une ‘belle’ exposition, c’est que ces œuvres

arrivent à transmettre un message », explique Géraldine Tobe. Kalunga, qui signifie « ce qui relie ou encore ce dont on ne voit ni le début ni la fin », fait référence à une philosophie ancestrale, un état spirituel qui relie le matériel et l’immatériel. Une spiritualité, avec laquelle le peuple congolais a perdu le contact. Et que Géraldine Tobe tente de canaliser à travers son œuvre. « En kikongo, une langue du Bas-Congo, on dit vomvwam, ce qui veut dire : « retourne ». C’est ce que je fais. Je suis tout simplement retournée auprès de ma grand-mère. » La voilà, la grand-mère, le foyer où a germé la pratique artistique de Géraldine Tobe. « Ma grand-mère était une femme qui venait du Kasaï, une grande province au Congo », raconte-t-elle. « Son père avait deux femmes, la première lui a donné neuf enfants, la seconde lui a donné dix garçons. Ses frères et sœurs sont morts les uns après les autres, jusqu’au moment où, quand la 19

famille a déjà fui à Kinshasa, elle ne voit plus personne autour d’elle. Alors ma grand-mère, pour commémorer et se sentir proche de sa famille, faisait des rituels. » Alors que les femmes sages faisaient office de guides spirituels, c’était quelque chose qui était vu comme de la sorcellerie et rejeté à l’époque à Kinshasa par les Kinois, qui avaient adopté le christianisme à cause de la colonisation, s’éloignant de leur propre culture. « Une de mes tantes m’interdisait de m’approcher d’elle quand j’étais enfant. Comme c’était une sorcière, elle pouvait nous ensorceler. Et moi, qui faisais toujours les choses à l’encontre, c’est exactement ce que j’ai fait. (Rires) Je m’en foutais qu’elle soit sorcière, je ressentais ce désir de me rapprocher de cette vieille femme. Heureusement, parce qu’elle est décédée peu de temps après. » « Elle était très ouverte, elle m’a transmis cette connaissance sur notre spiritualité ancestrale que chacun de nous a en soi. Avant tout, l’homme est esprit, et c’est grâce à ma grand-mère que moi, une enfant des années nonante, j’ai compris ça. Que c’était ça, l’élément crucial. Mon travail, tout ce que je fais, je le fais par rapport à cette éducation ancestrale. Et en même temps, c’est une manière de respecter la mémoire de mes ancêtres. Quand ma grandmère, qui était née dans les années trente ou quarante, était enfant, l’art était au service de la société, en faisait pleinement partie. Et elle a dit : ‘Inspire-toi de tes ancêtres, Géraldine’. C’est devenu un mode de vie pour moi. Je suis donc les traces de ces artistes de l’époque qui donnaient un corps physique aux esprits. Comme eux, j’essaie de donner une forme aux esprits. De nourrir mon travail avec une conscience. Que ça devienne quelque chose de simple, mais qui touche, qui parle. »

BRÛLE L’œuvre de Géraldine Tobe est une tentative de capter ce qui n’est pas tangible ni visible, de faire de l’art une porte qui ouvre vers la spiritualité. La forme dans laquelle elle capture cette intangibilité a une âme tout aussi éphémère : la fumée, les restes fugaces d’un feu dévorant. Ce feu est plus qu’une métaphore. C’est un paradoxe intime qui,

en même temps, prend brutalement et donne généreusement, un fil rouge gravé dans la vie de Géraldine Tobe. Comme l’art. « Je dessine depuis toute petite », explique-t-elle. « C’est mon grand frère qui m’a appris. Mais mes parents n’y voyaient aucun avenir. Pour être artiste au Congo, il faut avoir les nerfs solides ; il y a beaucoup de problèmes auxquels tu dois faire face. Ma mère ne voulait pas de ça. » Après un séjour dans un couvent, où elle ne trouve pas sa place, elle atterrit quand même à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Kinshasa. « Mais je sentais qu’il manquait quelque chose, que je ne parvenais pas à dire ce que je voulais avec la peinture traditionnelle. Mais je croyais tellement

à ce que je faisais, que j’ai persisté. Des questions me taraudaient : si jamais je n’ai plus accès à la peinture, serais-je encore capable de faire de l’art, de m’exprimer ? Et puis j’ai pris une décision radicale. J’ai brûlé toutes mes toiles. Et là, j’ai vu le feu et la fumée dégagée dans le ciel... » Cette terre brûlée s’est avérée un terrain fertile. « J’ai récupéré la peinture sous une autre forme », dit Géraldine Tobe. Aujourd’hui, elle accroche ses toiles comme un ciel au-dessus de sa tête et laisse la fumée suivre son cours, guidée par des pochoirs lorsque c’est possible. « Il n’y a pas que la fumée qui fait partie de mon intimité.

La lampe à pétrole m’est très familière aussi : c’est la lampe que ma mère utilisait pour éclairer ses marchandises en vendant la nuit. » Et puis il y a le feu, qui s’est présenté de manière terrifiante très tôt, lorsque encore enfant, elle a été accusée d’être une sorcière et qu’un prêtre a menacé de lui brûler les mains si elle n’avouait pas et l’a soumise à des sessions d’exorcisme extrêmes. « Ce n’est pas une chose sur laquelle je me lamente. Par contre, je dirais que c’est cette expérience-là qui a fait de moi ce que je suis aujourd’hui. Si je n’étais pas passée par là, je n’aurais pas eu cette forme et je n’aurais peut-être pas compris ce que les autres res-

sentent quand on les accuse sans raison. Parce qu’ils sont fragiles, sans défense et se laissent écraser. Toutes ces espèces de torture m’ont donné un discours et m’ont inspirée. » « C’est comme ça que j’ai commencé à me battre, à transcender, à aller au-delà de la douleur. En ne croyant pas à ce que les gens croient que l’on est, mais en ayant confiance en ce que l’on sait, à l’intérieur de soi, et en renversant ainsi la situation. Il y a encore des gens qui croient que je suis une sorcière, et moi, ça me fait avancer. » (Rires)

RÉCONCILIE Les mots de Géraldine Tobe sont éclatants, parfois insupportables. Et elle les prononce avec un calme remarquable, comme si elle savait comment conjurer l’horreur. Tout comme elle trouve une catharsis avec son art, digère les coups que la vie inflige à ce corps frêle, qui se relève malgré tout, et à une communauté meurtrie, exploitée, blessée, assassinée, démembrée et déracinée.

C’est cette communauté, l’autre, qui fait tenir Géraldine Tobe, révèle-t-elle quand ses mots la dépassent, galopant tout droit vers le trauma vécu. « Laissez-moi vous raconter une histoire.

Une histoire vraie. » Nous sommes en 2015, le réalisateur Renaud Barret tourne des scènes pour son documentaire Système K qui se penche sur la scène artistique de Kinshasa. Une performance de Géraldine Tobe tourne mal quand le feu avec lequel elle jouait se révèle imprévisible. « J’étais gravement brûlée. Le dos, les fesses, derrière les cuisses, les bras. Pendant un an et demi, j’ai dormi sur le ventre. C’était horrible, insupportable, j’avais tant de douleur que je ne pouvais plus pleurer. J’avoue que j’ai demandé la mort. » « Mais après, c’est là où je confirme : il y a un être suprême qui décide pour nous. Je voulais mourir mais c’est comme s’il y avait quelque chose qui me retenait le pied. ‘Mais écoute, Géraldine, pense à ton frère. Celui qui t’a donné le goût de l’art, qui t’a appris à dessiner. Celui qui était accusé d’être enfant sorcier, comme toi, et qui a souffert des tortures incroyables à cause de son handicap mental. C’est toi qui t’occupes de lui. Tu veux qu’un jour il se retrouve dans la rue ?

Pourrais-tu partir en paix ?’ C’est là que j’ai compris que je ne vis pas seulement pour moi-même. Je vis aussi pour les autres. » « J’ai toujours grandi vite face à des obstacles. À chaque fois que la vie me fait tomber, quand je me relève, j’avance beaucoup plus vite. Certes, toute une enfance en étant ‘sorcière’ n’était pas une bonne expérience. Mais je ne suis pas seule. À Kinshasa, je vois plein d’enfants dans la rue, tous avec la même histoire horrible. Mais à la base de l’horreur, il y a l’extrême pauvreté. Au milieu de tous ces problèmes, le seul espoir des gens réside en Dieu. Et dans les personnes qui s’imaginent être son bras droit, le pasteur, le prophète, des gourous qui dominent les gens et qui, en l’absence d’autres causes de problèmes, voient de la magie noire dans tout. » La rupture avec l’ancestralité, la spiritualité, provoquée par le colonialisme, est bien plus vaste que ce que les réparations et la restitution d’œuvres d’art pillées peuvent compenser, explique l’artiste qui était en résidence à Tervuren en 2019 pour travailler, avec d’autres jeunes artistes africains, autour d’objets qui jouaient un rôle spirituel dans la communauté africaine ancestrale. « Le plus important, ce n’est pas le physique mais l’esprit, l’idée. D’abord il faut implanter l’idée, et notre société est complètement déconnectée par rapport à cela aujourd’hui. Il y a tout un travail à faire : faire intervenir des anthropologues, des historiens, des chefs coutumiers, des femmes sages, des gens qui détiennent encore cette connaissance de cette spiritualité, qui a inspiré à nos ancêtres la création de ces objets d’art. Et qui peuvent aussi l’expliquer aux jeunes, les demandeurs de demain. C’est un travail qui ne va pas se faire en un clin d’œil. Peut-être dans cent ans ? » Quand mille coups de vent brisent le silence…

QUI EST GÉRALDINE TOBE? - Née en 1992 à Kinshasa, elle commence à dessiner dès son plus jeune âge, influencée par son frère aîné. Elle entretient un lien étroit avec sa grand-mère, une femme sage qui accomplit des rituels ancestraux et qui est considérée comme une sorcière - Elle est elle-même accusée de sorcellerie enfant et subit des séances d’exorcisme extrêmes avec son frère, atteint d’un handicap mental. Elle étudie l’art mais désillusionnée par la peinture classique, elle brûle ses toiles.

C’est là qu’elle voit son avenir : peindre avec de la fumée - À travers ses toiles, elle capte la spiritualité qui imprégnait la société congolaise. Avec Kalunga, sa première expo solo à Bruxelles, elle enchante l’espace au passé colonial de la Lever House

Jazz onder een vergrootglas

trio met Reinier Baas en Jamie Peet en in duo met Lynn Cassiers – krijgt haar Trombone Ensemble, dat ze mocht oprichten na haar bekroning als Jong Jazztalent op Gent Jazz, het gezelschap van jazztrombonist Robin Eubanks, die vaak aan de zijde speelde van bassist Dave Holland, maar ook met Sun Ra, Talking Heads en The Rolling Stones.

Met Kamaal Williams en Emma-Jean Thackray komen ook enkele vaandeldragers van de bloeiende Londense jazzscene langs, net als dichter-saxofonist Alabaster DePlume. Daarnaast kijken wij uit naar Black Flower, het kwintet rond Nathan Daems dat met NanoKosmos hun mix van Ethiojazz- en afrogrooves letterlijk onder een vergrootglas legt en wat er te zien is op microniveau visueel tot leven zal laten komen. Ook Dunderklumpen, een Zweedse animatiefilm van Per Åhlin, zorgt met muziek van het Brusselse jazzicoon bij uitstek voor een lokale ‘Toots’. Nieuw zijn de kleinschalige concerten in de Flagey-toren en in Studio 10, waar normaal geen publiek toegelaten wordt. (TP)

NL/ Na het kerstreces schiet de hoofdstad naar goede gewoonte muzikaal wakker met jazz. Het Brussels Jazz Festival herneemt na één streaming- en één afgelaste editie met een lang weekend in Flagey. Het programma plooit zich terug op Europa en geeft carte blanches aan artist in residence Nabou Claerhout en het gerenommeerde Münchense label ECM. Tussen optredens van de kwartetten van pianisten Julia Hülsmann en Benjamin Lackner krijgt u met de Sami-Noorse saxofoniste Mette Henriette en de Nederlandse pianist Wolfert Brederode een staalkaart van hun veelzijdige artiestenrooster.

EN/ Undeniably, there is a before and an after Peter Lindbergh. Through his photography, he contributed to creating a new image of femininity without artifice.

Following Germany, Italy and Spain, Brussels will host his extensive retrospective “Untold Stories” for five months.

The super models did not have any super-powers. They did not claim to be saving the world.

They were content with being beautiful and making people dream. It was a different era, before the immediacy of social media. In the 1980s, the pages of magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, and Rolling Stone raised models such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Helena Christensen to the status of icons. One of the architects of that metamorphosis in culture and the media was, undeniably, the photographer Peter Lindbergh.

Prior to this era, according to him, the women you saw in magazines, dressed up and made up, represented everything that he did not like. “I was at the beach in Los Angeles with a few unknown models. We made some very simple images. I was very happy with them. When the director of American Vogue saw my photos, he scratched his head, and said: ‘Thank you, young 24

man. Goodbye!’ Six months later, Anna Wintour took over the magazine. She saw the photographs and they corresponded exactly to what she wanted to do.”

EXCHANGE Peter Lindbergh grew up in Duisburg in the industrial gloom of the Ruhr. His early surroundings surely played a part in his devotion to the raw expressiveness of black and white in his quest for beauty without artifice, which he spent his whole life pursuing. A photographer concerned with capturing moments and with light, rather than with ornamentation and staging, his style and vision helped to change the expression of femininity. “Almost all my photos are portraits. When people say that a portrait is ‘totally him or totally her,’ that’s ridiculous. A portrait is never the person. In another photograph, you would see a different person. What you capture, I think, is the relationship with the person you are photographing. It’s an exchange and that’s what you see in the image.”

It would be an injustice, however, to reduce four decades of work to the 1980s alone. This retrospective covers Lindbergh’s whole career from its beginnings in the 1980s to his last images in 2019. This selection, which the artist actively collaborated on before his death, features 152 photographs, many of which have never been seen before. Without worrying about the chronology, he intuitively put together photographs, videos, and large-format prints like a puzzle to create new associations and interpretations of his work whereby the time and the buzz no longer have any importance.

Tussen de autotune-effecten maakt het voor zijn veelal jonge, vrouwelijke fans niet echt uit of hij het nu heeft over “baby” of “bébé”. Toen de krant De Morgen hem onlangs vroeg waarom sommige Vlaamse rappers meer succes hebben in Nederland dan in Vlaanderen, antwoordde hij zelf altijd gemikt te hebben op de Nederlandse markt. “Daar is de urban scene gewoon veel zichtbaarder,” klonk het, waarop hij verwees naar FunX, een nationale radio die “de dixte tunes speelt uit hiphop, R&B, latin, afrobeats, dance, arab & meer” en die het vooral in stedelijke gebieden erg goed doet. Dat er in zijn muziek Caraïbische reggaetongrooves zitten, zal ook wel geholpen hebben. Zijn platenbaas ontdekte hem op Instagram en zakte persoonlijk van Amsterdam naar Gent af om hem een deal aan te bieden.

Eerst wilde hij nochtans voetballer worden, maar op YouTube zag hij clips van Amerikaanse rappers als Meek Mill en Chris Brown, en dacht: dat kan ik ook. Aanvankelijk deed hij het alleen voor de fun, maar toen zijn posts op SoundCloud lof oogstten, zette hij door. Na een samenwerking met de Vlaamse rapper Chardy volgden de eerste solotracks. ‘Bouge ton derrière’ lanceerde hem in 2018 boven de Moerdijk. Sindsdien haalde Bryan MG liefst zestien single- en drie albumnoteringen in de Nederlandse charts. Door samenwerkingen met onder meer SRNO, een producer met Surinaamse roots, en bekende rappers als Frenna, Boef en Emms werd hij er opgenomen in een jonge, levendige scene, die aan een opmars bezig is in Vlaanderen. Voorlopige apotheose: Perfecte timing, een duoplaat die hij opnam met rapper en producer Architrackz.

Hoe snel het allemaal ging hoor je in het autobiografische ‘Lifestyle’, een van de tracks op het album Bryan.

Aangedikt door de in het milieu vaak gebruikte stemvervormingseffecten laat hij “million dolla lifestyle” rijmen met “it’s about time now”. Het levert naast een inkijk in zijn evolutie naar eigentijdse ghetto star een hook op die zich onder je hersenpan beitelt. Muziek was er altijd al. Zijn ouders draaiden Tupac en Sisqó, maar ook traditionele klanken. Toen hij als uk op de Gentse Feesten een keer aan de aandacht van zijn vader ontsnapt was, bleek hij op een podium te zijn geklommen om djembé te spelen. Muziek noemt hij therapie. In het dagelijkse leven is hij geen grote prater, en al zeker niet over zijn emoties. Achter de (drill)rap over meisjes versieren en andere machothema’s zit een klein hartje: van het eerste geld dat hij met zijn shows verdiende, kocht hij een televisie voor zijn moeder, en later first-classtickets naar Congo. EN/ Forget the football kings of Qatar, the best hat-trick of the year was scored by BLUAI: the all-female band came, saw and won all three of the main Flemish song contests, Sound Track, De Nieuwe Lichting and Humo’s Rock Rally. Just months after their triumph, the four women curl their debut EP into the nets of the AB. Text Tom Zonderman

LUAI (pronounced ‘blue eye’) came into life a few years ago in Cat(herine) Smet’s bedroom in a Flemish town called Beveren, near Antwerp. Back then, Smet was in her late teens and wanted somewhere to put her feelings. “Music was pretty much my diary,” she says in the offices of her Ghent record label. “I penned small, intimate songs about my emotional life.”

Last month, the tender love songs that the young girl from the Waasland region wrote at the time ended up on BLUAI’s first EP, Junkyard, a collection of six melancholic indie folk songs and dreamy rock tracks that listen like a classic coming-of-age story. “I do like looking back at my young, naive self through those fledgling songs,” Smet says. “Not that I have stopped being young and naive. (Laughs) When we perform those songs live, I turn back into that person I was then. With some lyrics, I sometimes think, ‘Oh, where was I back then?’ ‘One Night’, for example, is written out of self-pity. I had a mega-crush on a girl but it wasn’t mutual.”

BLUAI has since broadened from solo project to a four-piece band. Smet recorded the songs on Junkyard together with drummer Mo Govaerts, bassist Caitlin Talbut and guitarist Ilayada Cicek, who has since been replaced by Amino Parago.

All women, indeed. And there is no need to be shy about it, Smet says: yes, BLUAI is a girl band, so what? “Like the Flemish pop trio Bazart is a

boy band,” she says with a big smile. “We deliberately call ourselves a women’s band, because we are referred to that way all the time anyway. Unfortunately, a group with only female musicians is still an exception in the music business, and so we stand out.”

Jehnny Beth of the British post-punk group Savages always hated it when her group was called a “women’s band”. But you clearly don’t.

CAT SMET: It remains a difficult boundary, do we want to call it that or do we want the opposite?

We embrace it because we see it as an opportunity for more visibility for women in music.

Whenever we perform at some festival, the share of women on the bill immediately significantly increases. This is disconcerting, but at the same time we think that drawing attention to it is the right thing to do. Some seem to think that what we are doing is exploiting that, and try to stand out by promoting ourselves as a women’s band.

How do you come up with that?

Had you made up your mind in advance that you wanted to be in a band with only women?

SMET: Absolutely, and I deliberately only looked for female musicians.

If any man had turned up, would you have turned them away?

SMET: Yes. (Smiles)

I assume you specifically looked for a drummer called Mo, like Moe Tucker of The Velvet Underground.

SMET: Haha, no. I only knew her vaguely through Facebook and she was the only girl I knew who played drums, so she was my first and only option. (Laughs) I was very glad she said “yes” when I sent her a message via Messenger. Same with Caitlin: I didn’t know any other female bassist. When I saw on her Instagram page that she could sing super beautifully too, I was immediately sold. Ilayda I knew through Tinder. I knew immediately that she would be a good lead guitarist.

Ilayda, meanwhile, has left BLUAI to concentrate on her own project, ILA. Was that a difficult moment for the band?

SMET: We were still starting out so it was a bit of a shock, yes. But in the end, it was mostly an agenda issue. We did not want to get in the way of her project, nor did she want to get in ours. We just encourage each other to go for it. Ilayda is a great songwriter and musician, and she is doing really well with ILA, as she should be.

You and Ilayda were an item for a while. Are the songs of Junkyard about her?

SMET: There are certainly some songs inspired by that. Or at least one. Ilayda knows which number that is. I guess.

When an original member drops out, it inevitably upsets the balance of the group. Was Amina able to restore that balance easily?

SMET: We found her pretty quick, Caitlin has a friend who is Amina’s roommate. At that point, Amina had only played on the streets and then her fourth live show with BLUAI was in the Ancienne Belgique’s main hall. It was pretty cool how she managed that. Amina had had a terrible year. She has completely recovered now, but she had bone cancer. Fate drove us together, she needed something good in her life. We’re not going to ask her to lug around heavy amps and stuff like that just yet, but she goes all in when she’s on stage.

Kato De Boeck and Flo Van Deuren made their debut on VRT last month with Roomies, a Flemish TV series with women as main characters. That representation was something that they had missed during their teenage years. Have you experienced something similar as a musician?

SMET: Good question. Mo and I, like Flo and Kato, are queer. Queer female musicians making cool music was not something that I saw much of when I was growing up. A lot has changed since then, though, and artists like St. Vincent and the late Sophie have been very open about it. So far,

we have not really made a thing about it, like Flemish indie pop duo Kids with Buns has now done. But if I write about a relationship, I will not hide the fact that it is about a woman. I have already been told not to lay it on too thick. Just like that we shouldn’t focus too much on helping women move forward, because then people will start thinking we hate men. To be clear: we don’t hate men! (Laughs) It’s a shame you still have to deal with such things.

Who was that originally introduced you to music?

SMET: I was 10 when I saw my cousin playing drums, and I immediately wanted to do the same.

I don’t remember what music I listened to then, maybe the stuff my parents put on. Céline Dion, Robbie Williams, terrible things like that.

(Laughs) Later on, I picked up the guitar too because another cousin played guitar. What you see, you want to do. That’s why we think it’s so important that we are all women. It’s like saying: “Girls, you too can do this.”

“Have we found the Flemish Phoebe Bridgers?” the Humo’s Rock Rally jury wondered. Are you happy with that label, or is that the kind of stuff you want to break free from?

SMET: Being compared to her is, of course, super cool. Her debut, Stranger in the Alps, got me through a lot of things. The way Phoebe Bridgers articulates things, exposes a world of feelings, that is really unseen, I think. I sometimes hear people say that that is too ambitious, that we cannot do that. Of course, I am not trying to imitate her. I also don’t think we really sound like Phoebe Bridgers, our new songs certainly don’t fit that bill. When we do them live, we shuttle between the earlier more sensitive songs and the new, harder stuff we are writing now. She inspires me more in the way she presents herself, and how she incorporates that into her lyrics.

There are also so many other artists who inspire me, such as Julia Jacklin, Lucy Dacus, Soccer Mommy, Haim, Tomberlin... All women that are feeding me.

Do you have had any musical schooling?

SMET: No. Mo studied audio engineering and music management at PXL University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hasselt. Caitlin did cabaret at the conservatoire in Antwerp, and Amina is now majoring in song writing at PXL. Everyone does or did something with music, except me.

(Laughs) I am more visual and was interested in fiction and so I studied television at RITCS in Brussels, and then photography at the Royal

Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. I’m still mostly working on photography, because it’s something individual and it helps me focus better. As a director, you have to manage a whole team.

Don’t you, as the frontwoman of a band, have to manage a team too?

SMET: Yes. Managing a group is not easy, you try to get everyone on the same page. But I’ve been incredibly lucky to click so well with the rest of the band. There is not anyone I see as often as Caitlin, Mo and Amina. Then you have no choice but to be good friends too. Knowing what is going on inside someone or how they feel is only positive for the group. We still do not talk enough about that kind of well-being, I think. A band is like family, you have to take care of each other.

In other words, Mo, Caitlin and Amina too are familiar with that “emotional, yet hopeful wrecking yard” you describe in the press text of Junkyard?

SMET: Those songs were already written and

time, but I understand the fascination. The music scene seemed free-spirited, the sounds allowed to be a bit sloppy and casual. These are not necessarily terms that suit us, but I find that charming. Nirvana, The Breeders, none of that is too strict.

A true fan of sloppy nineties guitars did, of course, come to the Royal Circus for the Pavement reunion show a few weeks ago. Were you there too?

SMET: (Laughs) Unfortunately. But I think they are super cool. That band name has been dropped many times in our rehearsal room.

Does this nostalgia for the 1990s among millennials include a yearning for a simpler time?

SMET: Yeah, I think so. My generation has never known a time without the Internet. Look at how our band formed, it is not a romantic story that I met someone on the train and it went on from there. Back in the days, my father hung out in a park in Sint-Niklaas because he thought my mother would be there too. That’s how he made her fall for him. I think that that is so beautiful.

We hardly know that spontaneity, naivety anymore.

everything happened so fast that the content passed somewhat by, but with the new songs, Mo, Caitlin and Amina really want to know what they are about. That also helps them empathise. I like to use harsh words that are then framed by soft, comforting music. A bit like American singer-songwriter Skullcrusher. Hence the junkyard. Someone recently said that in a junkyard, you can smash everything and just leave it behind. I like that.

For me, the EP delineates a chapter of my life.

They are songs that made me grow up. I turned 26 last weekend. It’s time for something new.

When you are 26, you are a bit too young to have consciously experienced the 1990s, but they are certainly back. Young women are wearing high-waisted mom jeans again, Friends is being binged en masse on Netflix, even gabber music is back in fashion. Your music also contains echoes of popular rock bands of those days. Do you have a special connection to that period?

SMET: I don’t actively listen to the music of the

SMET: That was really awesome. Personally, I never thought I would be on a stage, or doing this. In the beginning, I had gigantic stage fright, I got really sick of the thought of having to stand in front of an audience. So I then organised a living room concert for my closest friends. I thought, that’s the hardest thing I can do, because they all know me well and you don’t want to fail. That was dying a few times and making a lot of mistakes. But in the end, they all embraced me. I can’t say I was over it after that one time, but that affirmation, from people you like, did help.

I still suffer from an imposter syndrome.

Having had three guitar lessons in my life, I cannot read notes. Can I call myself a musician?

But when you get that confirmation by winning those competitions, I do realise that maybe I should look at it differently. I also think we have come far in a short time. Our self-confidence has been boosted. We couldn’t say that a few months ago, back then we knew nothing. (Laughs) You should feel proud, you have scored a unique hat-trick. No boy band has managed this!

SMET: Voilà. That’s another great thing.

Good ID EN/ Hors les muren! is the very accurate name of the joint initiative by the art and culture centres Wiels, Brass and the Maison des Cultures in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles where they step outside their own walls. They do this with participative projects and gatherings for the local residents, mainly in the public spaces of Vorst/ Forest and Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles and in collaboration with artists and associations with a special focus on young people. In the past, there were projects such as Radio Poetik, Tombolo and Quartier Fêt’Art and now Hors les muren! is breaking out with a temporary exhibition comprising three artistic projects. It is the theme of prejudice that binds these projects together. They question what it means to form an idea of what someone is like and where those ideas come from. We often create an image of someone’s identity based on appearances or snippets of information on social media. Doesn’t that mean that we have to do a lot of work

The three projects each treat the issue of prejudices in their own way. Homelands, a project developed by GC Ten Weyngaert and the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation, brings together the result of workshops conducted

by Iraqi artist Ali Al-Kawaz with a group of elderly people from Vorst.Forest. Tribunal des Préjugés by the non-profit organisation Nighthawks questions prejudices associated with (residential) areas and uses an interactive map of Brussels to show the city in a different way. EN/ Some of you will recognise Emilien Vekemans from the web series Typique, others from French TV shows. The actor from Brussels has now made a name for himself on the other side of the Channel. In The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, recently released on Netflix, he plays one of the central characters, Gabriel, the assistant to a witch called Mercury (Róisín Murphy).

We paid him a visit at his place in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles.

THE CAMERA STAND “This camera stand is my tool of the trade. Being an actor is quite solitary, I spend hours and hours working away at my auditions with this thing.

When I started out as an actor, I imagined theatre and film to be all about teamwork, but you actually spend a lot of time honing your skills alone. Since Covid, all casting is done via tapes. I even bring this camera stand on holiday because you never know. For the auditions for The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, everything was done by tape. I met the team in London for the first time just two weeks before filming began. I have never been so stressed in my life.”

“Chekhov is my favourite playwright. When I finished secondary school, I was unsure about whether to study theatre. I struggled with realising that I wanted to become an actor. I went to see The Seagull at the Festival d’Avignon and I remember I could not stop crying, I was so moved. And that’s what made up my mind. I thought, it’s wonderful and it’s what I find beautiful in this life and it’s my passion.”

“Chekhov is an author who is at the heart of the actor studio method, which I work with a lot.

I have never performed in a Chekhov play but my dream is to be in The Seagull. I would play the young poet. Why not choose the main part, if I get to choose? (Laughs) I think that what moves me about Chekhov’s work is its potent melancholy and nostalgia, and an intimacy with the characters and their inner suffering that shines through so clearly in everyday things. And as an actor, if you can reach a real understanding of a character’s pain and of their flaws, that’s when they become complex and interesting, and you see them as a real human.”

“I think that that nostalgic and melancholic aspect must come from a particular preoccupation with childhood. I had a very happy childhood. Those were my best years when I think back on them. They were nothing but laughter and sunshine. A blissful ignorance, which changed during adolescence because that’s when things changed in my family. I know that my little brother, for example, who was born eight years after me, did not have the same childhood at all. I think that people who had a happy childhood might be more prone to nostalgia. Chekhov’s work is full of bourgeois people for whom everything is falling apart and of yearning for a past when everything was beautiful (The Cherry Orchard, etc.). I think it’s that melancholy that comes across and that moves me.”

“This is my Austin Powers clock. Austin Powers was kind of one of my (anti-)heroes when I was little. I liked the totally mad American humour that can go anywhere. I bought the clock from an antique dealer in Brooklyn. It’s broken, it has never worked, and it suits it well that it is so faded. I was thinking about Austin Powers again and it struck me that, with his funny side, he was already playing with the codes of masculinity. He is someone absolutely disgusting, and he also has a very effeminate side in his way of moving, but all the women are in love with him. You get the sense that he was already questioning those masculine images that we are suffocated by. All the James Bonds and the like. Now, from a modern perspective, if you watch a James Bond film with Pierce Brosnan, you almost want to vomit. When you think that we showed this stuff to children! Mike Myers had the ability to laugh at that and challenge those models.”

“At the time, when I was working on the character of Gabriel in The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, I didn’t think about these questions around masculinity. My character is modelled on the profile we developed with the costume designer Hannah Edwards, who is known, among other things, for her music videos with M.I.A.. She is absolutely incredible. When we were searching for Gabriel’s look, we ended up with a lot of jewellery and skin-tight clothing.

She found, for example, a women’s leopard-print vest. She put me in clothes that made me feel much freer to be a bit feminine. Knowing that the character also had a very bad-ass side.”

“Looking back, I realise that we were trying to give people something different. And what’s cool is seeing that there are a lot of people who identify with it. I received a lot of messages on Instagram from people who were excited about that new side to the character. When you look at

WHO IS EMILIEN VEKEMANS? — Born in 1992 in Brussels. He studied dramatic arts at the IAD. Between 2012 and 2015, he played Max, the main character in Typique, a web series about student life, released first on YouTube before being broadcast on the RTBF website and channels — Between 2015 and 2017, he was a member of the cast of the play La Théorie du Y and then of the eponymous RTBF series. He has also spent time behind the camera and made La Vinaigrette in 2016, followed by Zoufs in 2017, made with Tom Boccara and Noé Reutenauer

THE WITCH EARRING “I inherited this earring from the show. It’s a witch symbol that my character, Gabriel, wears in his left ear. It brings back lots of memories for me. It was the first time that I had played such a big part, and I had a lot to prove. The show-runner Joe Barton was inspired by Sally Green’s Half Bad trilogy but went in a different direction. The format of the series is somewhat familiar: a young witch who discovers his power, with nods of the head to Harry Potter, but rawer, with more gore and more trash. People expect a series for teenagers, and they are pleasantly surprised to find it so relatable.”

“I was also proud to bring that love triangle to the screen. It raises themes without addressing them explicitly. In recent Netflix shows and films, there are a lot of representations of gay love within a school. Those films have been a great 40

success, but The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself is more about a character who is discovering himself in general, the discovery of his sexuality is not the central theme.”

“To come back to the earring, I already had a hole in my ear before I had to wear it for the series. I have never worn it in Brussels (laughs), it lives in my little jewellery box with my little rings.

(He shows us one of his rings) This is a Le 77 ring, the rap band from Brussels. A friend of mine who is in the band gave it to me for my birthday. As for my hair, when it started growing back after the series and losing its colour, I didn’t like it, I wanted it to be blond again! Netflix had a small promotion budget for our look, and I made use of it! My agent was against it, but hey, you only live once. (Laughs) You could say Gabriel’s look in the series inspired me and made me want to wear more jewellery, etc. A change of look is always difficult to carry off within your social circle because people don’t like change. But as an actor, you always have an excuse.”

Des figues pour Noël FR/ Juste avant le début de l’hiver, Bruxelles se réchauffe avec le plus méditerranéen des festivals de cinéma de la capitale : Cinemamed. Deux films forts en vue : Sous les figues d’Erige Sehiri et Le bleu du caftan de Maryam Touzani. De nombreux Bruxellois ont un lien avec l’un des vingt pays qui se partagent la mer Méditerranée, mais peu de films issus de ces cultures si diverses parviennent jusqu’à nos écrans.

Cinemamed remédie à ce déséquilibre. Se laisser surprendre par des films dans une ambiance chaleureuse constitue le charme de ce festival qui met à l’honneur la tolérance, l’échange et l’interculturalisme. Mais si vous avez envie de qualité, de beauté, de tact et d’exploration féminine de microcosmes relativement inconnus, optez pour Sous les figues ou Le bleu du caftan. Avec

ce dernier, la scénariste et réalisatrice marocaine Maryam Touzani confirme tout le bien qu’on a écrit sur elle après Adam.

Une fois de plus, elle peut compter sur une performance éblouissante de la Bruxelloise Lubna Azabal. Et une fois encore, son film met en valeur la pure beauté d’un métier artisanal. Dans une ancienne médina, un couturier tombe sous le charme de son disciple alors que sa femme est de plus en plus malade. Aussi sensuel que triste et nuancé.

La tendresse est aussi un mot qui reviendra dans presque toutes les critiques de Sous les figues. La franco-tunisienne Erige Sehiri a eu la brillante idée de filmer des jeunes femmes et des jeunes hommes engagés pour cueillir des figues dans une Tunisie paradisiaque. On rêve et on flirte, avec l’aide des réseaux sociaux. Mais la tradition est ce qu’elle est et la réalité économique aussi. (NR) Sous les figues

NL/ Twee Koreanen halen af en toe stiekem een baby uit de vondelingenschuif en verkopen het kind aan ouders met een onvervulde kinderwens. Een moeder heeft de schelmen door en gaat met ze mee. Niet een van de vele Koreaanse toppers onthaalt ons op deze zoete, sentimentele roadmovie, maar een van Japans grootste regisseurs: Gouden Palm-winnaar Hirokazu Kore-eda. Broker is niet zijn beste film, maar fans van de zachte humanist hoeven niet te twijfelen. (NR)

EN/ A century ago, Hollywood was known as Babylon because of wild tales of colourful characters, decadent parties and rancid excesses. A spectacle that dives eagerly into that history is one you don’t want to miss.

Even less when it comes with Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Tobey Maguire playing characters based on Hollywood legends like Clark Gable, Douglas Fairbanks and Joan Crawford. Certainly not when Damien Chazelle (La La Land) is at the helm. (NR)

Sean Harris et Joel Edgerton excellent dans le rôle de deux hommes qui se lient d’amitié dans le milieu du crime mais qui cachent en réalité ce qu’ils sont. Une histoire bien construite, une photographie audacieuse, un montage brutal, une expérience visuelle intense. (NR)

Quiconque à Bruxelles éprouve une envie d’huîtres aura le réflexe de se diriger vers l’une des adresses consacrées en la matière, à savoir ces grandes brasseries dédiées à la mer. Logique, celles-ci se targuent d’un banc d’écailler en bonne et due forme. Pour ce qui est de notre expérience personnelle – il faut préciser que l’on ne prétend pas avoir testé tous les établissements de ce créneau – la satisfaction a rarement été de mise. Il faut avouer que nos attentes sont élevées.

En (Fine de) clair(e), ce que l’on recherche, c’est le conseil d’un véritable sommelier du bivalve capable de recommander les « meroirs » – équivalents aquatiques du terroir – au plus proches des papilles du client.

En lieu et place, nous n’avons jamais été confronté à rien de plus que… des ouvreurs

d’huîtres, même si ceux-ci étaient sympathiques, le test ultime en la matière consiste à lancer la conversation sur la question des « diploïdes » et des « triploïdes ». Bien sûr, si la réponse est « diplo, quoi ? », il ne faut pas en déduire que les mollusques vendus sont mauvais. En revanche, il y a tout lieu de croire que la passion et le savoir ne sont pas au rendez-vous. Outre connaître cette différence essentielle entre des huîtres rendues à 80% stériles par manipulation chromosomique (les triploïdes) et des huîtres en phase avec les cycles naturels (diploïdes), un bon écailler doit être capable de citer les sept bassins ostréicoles français, être au courant des variétés (spéciales, claires, vertes…) et assortir les calibrages avec les envies de la clientèle. Que faire quand cette expertise n’est pas au rendez-vous ?

Trois adresses sous le signe des huîtres

Heureusement, Bruxelles fait place à une nouvelle génération de chefs qui bousculent les codes de la gastronomie. Dans le cas qui nous occupe, à la place de proposer un assortiment spectaculaire mis en valeur sur glace – une hérésie en soi qui bloque les saveurs du produit – ces adresses font le choix d’une offre ultra-limitée mais à la fraîcheur et à la qualité impressionnantes.

Autre adresse à faire bouger les lignes, ce « snack de terroir » invite Marseille à Bruxelles. Non sans faire un détour par la Normandie puisque Delphine Auffret y propose les huîtres du Père Gus. On aime l’approche de l’ostréiculteur Jean Rouvière qui collecte les naissains en Charente-Maritime pour les ramener ensuite dans la Manche. L’élevage qui s’effectue en pleine mer dure 3 ans et est prolongé par un affinage dans des bassins peu profonds appelés « claires ».

Côté boisson, le Bain des Dames fait la part belle aux étiquettes naturelles – dont les excellents vins espagnols du domaine Partida Creus -, sans négliger les bières locales (Cantillon, Brasserie de l’Ermitage…) et les eaux-de-vie. Pour dénicher le bon accord avec l’iode, ne pas hésiter à se tourner vers la patronne qui connaît ses flacons sur le bout des doigts. (MV)

NOUVELLE VAGUE L’un des meilleurs exemples en la matière est donné par Liesse, adresse que l’on doit entre autres à Pierre Millour, repéré au bar à cocktails Chez Ta Mère – un lieu prisé pour ses dégustations hebdomadaires nommées « Jeud’huître ».

Le plus pour cette enseigne étroite – une petite trentaine de couverts – qui aurait dû être un snack à Bánh mì au départ ? Une connexion directe avec un ostréiculteur breton, situé dans le bassin du Pô à Carnac (Morbihan), portant le nom de Les Perles de Yuna. « Les huîtres sont mises en bourriches le mardi après-midi et elles me sont livrées dans la nuit du mardi au mercredi », explique Millour. D’abord, on aime qu’elles soient Liesse issues de la pratique traditionnelle, le Adolphe Demeur« captage », qui laan 57 avenue consiste à récolter les Adolphe Demeur, naissains en pleine Sint-Gillis/ mer. Ces huîtres sont Saint-Gilles, donc issues d’une @liesse.bxl, procréation dans le di/ma/Tu > za/sa/ milieu naturel, au Sa 17 > 0.00 contraire de la reproduction en écloseries. Diploïdes, ces mollusques le sont assurément. L’intérêt ? Un respect du vivant qui évite la densification des zones de production et, partant, des déséquilibres environnementaux – il est intéressant de savoir que de nombreux élevages font face à des mortalités massives, notamment en raison d’agents infectieux.

Quid de la dégustation ? L’assiette (15 euros) aligne 6 huîtres creuses de calibre 4, soit le format bistro consacré. Elle est escortée d’un pain à tomber venant de l’excellente boulangerie Khobz. En accompagnement, un quart de citron et une petite vinaigrette à l’échalote, un condiment plaisant pour qui veut altérer l’expérience.

C’est sans citron, ni poivre, ni vinaigre, que l’on choisit de savourer les huîtres. En bouche, on pointe une grande naturalité, saline et iodée, tempérée par une chair contenue qui ne sature pas les papilles. Le tout est accompagné d’un Muscadet Sèvre et Maine « Bohale » (6 euros) dont la belle longueur et le caractère floral font mouche.

Vous habitez du côté de Schaerbeek et vous voudriez goûter les huîtres bretonnes « Perles de Yuna » ? Ne bougez pas. Pendant tout le mois de décembre Le Wappers programme des dégustations le mercredi – la soupe au poisson est également au menu. Pour rappel, cette enseigne a été ouverte par l’un des brasseurs les plus intéressants de la capitale, Bernard Leboucq de la Brasserie de la Senne – les amateurs se réjouiront de voir couler Zinnebir, Jambe de Bois et Zenne Pils au fût.
