“In het theater van de stad spelen zich scènes af waarin details ons uitnodigen tot een spel. De taferelen die zich aandienen, bestaan uit kleine nietigheden. Dat zijn de plekken waar mijn verbeelding aan het dwalen gaat, vluchtig, voor de duur die architecten ons gunnen. De stadsontwikkeling van Brussel grijpt wild om zich heen, de braakliggende stukken zijn door weemoed bezield, het beton is zwaar gewapend… Desondanks blijft alles ademen!” NL

Toen Damiaan De Schrijver en Peter Van den Eede in 1998 Louis Malles filmscript My dinner with André op de planken brachten, werd de drieënhalf uur durende theaterdialoog meteen een hit. Twintig jaar, tweehonderd voorstellingen en niet eens zoveel kilo’s later, zet het komische duo zich opnieuw rond de tafel voor een copieuze, ter plekke bereide en geserveerde meergangenmaaltijd en dito tekst. De vraag op welke manier je het leven best kan leven, wordt bedolven onder een karrenvracht buitenissige verhalen, verbale en non-verbale hoogstandjes, ingesleten improvisaties, toneelgrapjes en vette knipogen naar het hongerige publiek. Une tournée des bistrots avec en arrière-fond de la musique trépidante : c’est la formule gagnante de Jazz Jette June. Les cafés et leur clientèle sont hauts en couleur, un peu comme un legging au motif léopard. Et c’est pareil pour les vingt concerts de leur 29e affiche. And in that language, the name of the hippest record promoter at the moment means “the feeling of a sudden uncontrollable urge to move, shake or dance.” To prove that this is no false promise, the label from Kampala is coming to the AB for two days. You can expect ass-shaking music from East Africa performed by, among others, the former boxing champion Otim Alpha and the percussionist from hell Nihiloxica. (TZ) EN

De naam van auteur-provocateur Antonius Hedwig Jozef Dautzenberg laat zich godzijdank afkorten tot A.H.J. Dautzenberg, of zelfs gewoon tot Dautzenberg. De liegende Hollander werd eind vorig jaar vijftig en deed ons bij die gelegenheid twee boeken cadeau: de bundel Vijftig verhalen en de autobiografische notities Ik bestaat uit twee letters in de bekende Privé-domein-reeks. Criticus Dirk Leyman zal in zijn gesprek met Dautzenberg wellicht geen poging doen om feiten en fictie van elkaar te scheiden, maar deelt net als collega-schrijver Joubert Pignon in de feestvreugde. Bozar’s The Art of Difference feels a lot like a Philip K. Dick novel. In a series of talks and an exhibition, they’re questioning how advancements in technology have improved the standard of living for people with a handicap. Bionic prostheses and exoskeletons are on display next to computerised smart glasses that help blind people see. Of course there’s room for the ethical questions that arise from these cyborg-like improvements. Bozar presents both sides of the spectrum though. Showing not only the technological, but also the artistic advancements that biotech went through. Only one question remains unanswered: do androids dream of electric sheep? (JC) EN

YELLOWSTRAPS Wie? Een trio rond de broertjes Alban en Yvan Murenzi, soul brothers uit Eigenbrakel, Raph Stark roffelt op de drums. Wanneer? 21/6, 19.00, Atelier 210 & 23/6, 18.00, Dokter Schweitzerplein Smaakt als? Oorspronkelijk als een downtempoversie van Flying Lotus en Mount Kimbie, toen YellowStraps zijn klanken kruiste met bloedbroeder Le Motel. Op zijn nieuwe ep Blame laaft het door LeFtO van de straat geplukte drietal zich nog meer aan middernachtelijke triphop en r&b, en jazz. Verdoofde songs waarin je smaakpapillen restanten van King Krule, Earl Sweatshirt en Sampha kunnen herkennen. Op hun nieuwe single ‘Nights up’ zorgt de Australische indiefolkie St. South voor extra flavour. Stuff genoeg voor een doorbraak, zeggen wij. Shaken or stirred? Zachtjes roeren, langzaam savoureren. Roesfactor? Bedwelmend.

Wie? Vier Brusseleirs met een klantenkaart in de betere elektronicadoe-het-zelfzaak. Wanneer? 22/6, 18.00, Kiosque Art Déco Smaakt als? De hipste ingrediënten van het moment door elkaar geklutst: Bombataz is een eclectisch smaakbommetje. Je puurt er gelijke delen elektronica, jazz, funk, exotische beats en kitsch uit. Het handvol songs dat online te beluisteren valt, genre ‘Day & nite’ en ‘Pitbull’, waarin Bombataz beats bakt met hondengeblaf, verraadt een avontuurlijke geest. Dat deze bende muzikale veelvraten onlangs nog door de Gentse futuristische frituristen van STUFF. werd gesommeerd op hun STUFF. Invites-avond in Antwerpen, geeft aan hoeveel potentieel er in deze rekels zit. On the rocks? De temperatuur kan oplopen, ijsblokjes zijn geen overbodige luxe. Roesfactor? Tipsy.

SUPER PARQUET

Wie? Moeder Agathe, zoon Nino en (geadopteerde) dochter Randa halen de familiebanden aan. Wanneer? 22/6, 19.30, Marie Jansonplein Smaakt als? Verschroeide gitaren met een zwartgeblakerde korst. Nee, het Brusselse Sale Gosse vindt het wiel niet opnieuw uit. Zijn ongeschoren bluespunk en postgrunge hebt u ongetwijfeld al eens eerder gehoord toen u als rebellerende tiener door de jaren 1990 strompelde. Maar dat is alweer véél te lang geleden. Bovendien brengt het trio zijn stuff uit op het Luikse label Luik Records, keurmerk voor de betere Belgische herrie. Wie met zijn moeder in een band speelt en zijn eerste ep The first dick I ever saw was Iggy Pop’s noemt, doet onze, euh, smaakpapillen sowieso op hol slaan. Als u nog eens goed wilt moshen, op naar het Jansonplein. Strootje? Lekkerder zonder. Roesfactor? Knock-out.

Wie? Een stelletje vloerders uit de Auvergne, niet te verwarren met de broeders van Parquet Courts. Wanneer? 23/6, 20.00, Jubelpark Smaakt als? Een volgens middeleeuws recept bereid meergranenkoekje met nieuw glazuur. De baardige nerds van Super Parquet zien eruit alsof ze alleen maar geïnteresseerd zijn in rollenspelen met zwaarden, schuimend gerstenat en in kelders opgesloten jonkvrouwen, maar hun muzikale huwelijk tussen draailieren, doedelzakken, banjo’s en elektronica is best fris. De middeleeuwse versie van een trancey trip richting de kosmos, zeg maar, aangevuurd door repetitieve ritmes en dito melodieën. Hun concerten voelen aan als sjamanistische rituelen met een flinke teug acid. Zonnegod Sun Ra likt goedkeurend aan een lsd-tabletje. Strain of double strain? In één teug naar binnen gieten. Roesfactor? Delirium.

Al 35 jaar laat het van oorsprong Franse Fête de la Musique muzikanten van over de hele wereld zich tonen in al hun kleurenpracht. Ook in Brussel gutst muziek vier dagen lang uit alle poriën van de stad. Wij shaken voor u dé cocktail voor een feestelijke start van de zomer. — TOM ZONDERMAN

Wie? Siméon Zuyten, één derde van het Brusselse rapcollectief L’Or du Commun. Wanneer? 23/6, 22.15, Dokter Schweitzerplein Smaakt als? Hiphop met schwung. Roméo Elvis zette zijn eerste stapjes in de hiphopwereld met L’Or du Commun en nam vervolgens Swing mee als sidekick om live z’n duivels te ontbinden. Swing debuteerde intussen zelf met Marabout. Die titel doet ons in de eerste plaats denken aan die statige neef van de ooievaar, maar voor Swing verwijst die naam vast naar zijn Rwandese roots. Maar die zetten zich niet door, Swing heeft goed geluisterd naar MC Solaar en Amerikaanse rappers. Le Motel gooit er af en toe een elektrisch dekentje over, maar het is vooral de soul die je gemoed in de juiste toestand brengt. Suikerrandje? Niet nodig, de cachaça doet zijn werk. Roesfactor? Beneveld.

Wie? Muzikale voodoopriesters uit Haïti, aangevoerd door Jean-Claude ‘Sambaton’ Dorvil. Wanneer? 24/6, 15.30, Emile Bockstaelplein Smaakt als? Dat pilletje dat u wekelijks neemt tegen die duiveltjes op uw schouders die zich willen vastbijten in uw lijf en ledematen. Chouk Bwa Libète, wij gokken op patois voor “muziek is bevrijding van de ziel”, serveert zijn muziek rauw en ongepolijst. Op zijn debuutalbum Se nou ki la! wordt geroffeld op traditionele trommels, ijzeren vaten en allerlei spul uit bamboe. Een percussiefestijn dat Afrikaanse roots in zich draagt en dat je kan onderbrengen in de mizik rasin (‘rootsmuziek’), een stroming die traditionele muziek met westerse ging kruiden en een stem geeft aan de boerenbevolking van Haïti die dagelijks moet knokken om te overleven. Blend? Grof gemengd. Roesfactor? Trance.

Wie? Drie kerels die weten dat hawaïhemden ultrahip zijn. Wanneer? 23/6, 21.00, Brass Smaakt als? Een vruchtencocktail die uw innerlijke transit weer op orde stelt. Zijn naam verwijst naar een groepje uit de eighties, maar deze Francky haalt zijn ingrediënten uit exotischere gebieden: een snuifje zouk, een paar Caraïbische ritmes, een Afrikaanse gitaarlijn en zuiderse funk. Ja, stel je bij ‘Cameroun Diaz’ maar een zwoel feestje voor en duikel je kleurigste hemd op uit je kleerkast om je bandeloos in het zweet te dansen. Frozen? U bent snel ontdooid. Roesfactor? Party, tot Francky zegt: relax.

PENELOPE ANTENA Wie? De dochter van Isabelle Antena en kleindochter van Marc Moulin, maar vooral ook zichzelf. Wanneer? 23/6, 19.00, Dokter Schweitzerplein Smaakt als? Een toefje slagroom rond een dagdroom. De Brusselse auteur, producer en muzikante debuteerde vorig jaar met de ep Down the habit hole, zes pareltjes van songs met een vleugje chanson, zwarte soul, triphop en Balearic beats, heerlijk zonnig, zacht, en vol verlangen. Denk aan een ingetogen Erykah Badu of een zwoele Lauryn Hill. Het konijn van Alice mag u er zelf bij fantaseren. Garnering? Een schijfje limoen en een likje zout. Roesfactor? Zwijmelen.

Voilà 35 ans que la Fête de la Musique offre à travers le monde l’opportunité de fleurir à des musiciens. À Bruxelles aussi, la musique jaillira des entrailles de la capitale pour marquer les débuts festifs de l’été. FR

Camille Judic France, 24 years old

Camille Judic’s first idea for her graduation performance was to draw her inspiration from Freud’s theory of the unconscious, playing on the balance between the id, the ego, and the superego. “Through work and experimentation, the concept evolved. Circus is a living art form. I kept the idea of different personalities, but I wanted it to tell the audience a story.” Camille started out quite late, taking a circus module at her college in Vannes, in Brittany. “I started out with aerial silks. The first time I was onstage, I felt transformed. My body buzzed with every movement.” After attending the ACaPA in Tilburg, in Holland, she chose aerial straps. “The equipment leaves your body a lot of room to move. It’s just an attachment on your wrists. It’s a tool that gives you a lot of control from the ground. It’s also very physical, like aerial dance. Because I repeat the movements every day, I no longer need to concentrate. They are like any other movement for me. The technique is just a tool for conveying other things.” She is in no hurry, optimistically planning her future, step by step. In July, she is running classes at a festival of aerial dance, after which she will be directed by a Dutch choreographer, along with another aerial straps artist. As well as performing, Camille also used her sewing machine to make her stage costume and those of six of her classmates. “It’s something I really enjoy. When I’m too old and my body has had enough, I’ll set up as a costumier!”

Mikayla Dinsdale USA/Canada, 22 years old

In creating her performance, Mikayla Dinsdale delved into chaos theory, injecting it with a childlike energy and a lot of imagination. “I fill my circus performances with joy, fun, and amazement. It’s an art form that takes you out of the ordinary. If it doesn’t, I don’t see the point.” To start with, the young American learned by herself and in preparatory classes after school. Very quickly, she was drawn to aerial performance. She worked hard on her technique and chose the hoop to have a better chance of being accepted into the school in Brussels. Arriving in Europe was an eye-opening experience. It was a total culture shock. “I come from Fairfax, a little town north of San Francisco. There is almost no circus culture there. People only know the big names like Barnum & Bailey or Cirque du Soleil. Fortunately, I have family living in Canada, where I was able to see more interesting shows.” Her four years at the ESAC have shown her how much work is involved in learning to do this job. “When I saw the videos of my performance at the exam, I was amazed. It completely surpassed what I was capable of doing when I arrived.” Right now, she is happy but tired. “For the last few years, my life has been all about circus and school. Now, I need to take a step back and go home to California. I’m not sure what I want to do afterwards. Cabaret, work with a small troupe, or create my own project. There are so many possibilities.”

As happens every year, the final-year students of the Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque (ESAC) present their graduation show, Exit, at Les Halles. It’s the final step in their training before they enter the professional world. Meet four of the artists about to take flight.

JUGGLING

Luca Lugari Italy, 27 years old

Luca Lugari presents a performance in which he juggles with three clubs. “I like creating a relationship between myself and the objects. Onstage, the clubs become characters with which I convey different emotional states.” Hanging out in parks with his friends, he started juggling rather than playing football. He would practise in his room with three lemons. “I always loved that feeling when you manage to keep three objects in the air. It’s very powerful. Juggling leaves you a lot of freedom; it’s like dance, you create movements.” After Modena, he went to Turin to take classes at the FLIC school, where he never deviated from his preferred discipline. “I like being onstage, it’s always a challenge. You have to cope. There are days when it comes easily and others when it doesn’t go so well. There is no magic formula.” At the ESAC, he learned to organise his training and to put together a performance. In the future, he sees himself more as a creator than as a performer. This summer, he will go back to Italy, returning to a street theatre company that he set up with a few friends. “I like the rapport between the audience and the artists. You are on the same level, which makes interaction and participation easier. The circus has its own language. You create images like metaphors that you share with the audience, and that each person can relate to their own experience so they can travel inside their own heads. Unlike in theatre, you are not telling a story from beginning to end, you are telling a thousand.”

CHINESE POLE

Rocio Aimé Garrote Argentina, 25 years old

Rocio Aimé Garrote’s performance holds a mirror up to her audience. “My starting point was who I am, where I come from, and what I have done. It’s also about what has been won and what has been lost. I added colours, rhythms, and other touches that make up a circus performance.” She also drew inspiration from music, which played a big part in developing the performance. “I worked with a musician. I also like to develop pieces in silence, but when I find the right music, it pushes me to go further.” Rocio came to the circus quite late, at 18 and almost by chance, when she accompanied a friend to an aerial silks class. When she arrived in Buenos Aires, she hadn’t yet made her mind up between theatre and circus. She started out with aerial equipment before choosing Chinese pole. “It’s usually only practiced by men because it requires a lot of strength, but you also need to be supple. Aerial equipment adapts to your body, but the Chinese pole doesn’t move, so it’s the body that must adapt. If you make a wrong movement, you fall.” She is not planning to return to Argentina, where there aren’t a lot of opportunities for circus artists. She has plenty of projects lined up over the coming months. “Since I started as a circus artist, new opportunities come up every year. I am working on a show with another girl from the ESAC, an acrobat. I have also started a Chinese pole duo with a guy in second year, with whom I have already performed at a few different festivals.”

Het splinternieuwe Brussels International Film Festival opent met een knaller. Filmregisseur (en Monty Python) Terry Gilliam presenteert The man who killed Don Quixote, een film die 25 jaar “in de maak en de onmaak” was. “Natuurlijk was opgeven het redelijke ding om te doen, maar ik kreeg het niet over mijn hart.” — NIELS RUËLL

nd now, after more than 25 years in the making…and unmaking…a Terry Gilliam film.” Met die ‘pancarte’ begint The man who killed Don Quixote, de slotfilm van het Festival van Cannes en de openingsfilm van de eerste editie van het Brussels International Film Festival. De legendarische Terry Gilliam verwijst met die ongebruikelijke introductie naar de bewogen ontstaansgeschiedenis van zijn eigenzinnige bewerking van een Spaanse ridderroman die al vierhonderd jaar tot de verbeelding spreekt: Don Quichot van Cervantes. De Muur van Berlijn staat nog recht wanneer Gilliam op het idee voor de film komt. Het kost de Monty Python die zich met succes omschoolde tot filmregisseur (12 monkeys, Brazil, The fisher king) tien jaar om de financiering rond te krijgen. In 2000 kan hij eindelijk beginnen draaien. De Franse acteur Jean Rochefort is de idealistische edelman die windmolens bestrijdt in het idee dat het reuzen zijn. Diens hulpje is niemand minder dan Johnny Depp. Maar het regent tegenslagen. De filmset bevindt zich naast een militaire basis waardoor er constant straaljagers overvliegen. Een zondvloed spoelt peperduur materiaal weg en verandert het landschap. De verzekering blijkt dat niet te dekken. Prostaatproblemen en een dubbele hernia bezorgen Rochefort helse pijnen tijdens het paardrijden, waardoor hij moet afhaken. Uiteindelijk wordt de productie stilgelegd. Lost in La Mancha, een documentaire over de schrijnende unmaking of, maakt furore. Gilliam geeft evenwel niet op. Om de zoveel maanden haalt zijn droomproject het nieuws. Gérard Depardieu, Robert Duvall, Johnny Depp, John Hurt, Ewan McGregor en Michael Palin komen in beeld als acteurs. Met geen van hen lukt het en de jaren gaan voorbij. Nog laat Don Quichot Gilliam niet los. Maart vorig jaar leek de lijdensweg dan toch in triomf te eindigen. Via Twitter maakte Gilliam bekend dat de

opnames van The man who killed Don Quixote afgerond zijn. Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, Game of thrones) en Adam Driver (Star wars, Paterson) spelen de hoofdrollen en worden bijgestaan door Stellan Skarsgård en Olga Kurylenko. Maar zelfs ingeblikt is de film niet veilig voor rampspoed. Paulo Branco, een beruchte Portugese producent met wie Gilliam gebrouilleerd raakte, beweert dat de film illegaal gemaakt is en spant een rechtszaak aan om vertoningen te verbieden. Het Filmfestival van Cannes is al aan de gang wanneer de rechtbank instemt met de eerste publieke vertoning van de film die 25 jaar in de maak was. De dag voor de wereldpremière was Terry Gilliam er nog steeds niet helemaal gerust in. “Cannes’ festivalpaleis kan vannacht nog afbranden,” lacht hij.

Ik ben blij jou hier levend en wel te zien. Vorige week belandde je even in het ziekenhuis. TERRY GILLIAM: Ik ben geschrokken, maar maak je geen zorgen: ik ben oké. Je kent me: voor een beetje publiciteit ben ik tot alles bereid. (Lacht)

Heb je zelf ooit geloofd in een vloek op The man who killed Don Quixote? GILLIAM: Neen. Tegenslag komt voor, daar is geen vloek voor nodig. Het idee van een vervloeking heeft me wel geholpen. Dat leefde bij de pers, waardoor mijn film heel vaak het nieuws heeft gehaald. Ook op veel producenten had de vloek een interessant effect. Ze wilden bekend raken als de producent die de vloek ophief en onproduceerbare films wél tot een goed einde brengt. Vier producenten dachten dat ze de man waren, maar beten hun tanden stuk op het project. Hun pogingen waren puur tijdverlies. Door hun falen verloor ik telkens twee jaar van mijn leven.

om op te geven. Onder hen ook flink wat zeer redelijke mensen zoals mijn vrouw. Natuurlijk was opgeven het redelijke ding om te doen. “Geef Don Quichot op en je hebt tijd en ruimte voor tien andere films,” kreeg ik te horen. Dat klopt, maar ik kreeg het niet over mijn hart.

Is dit nu de film die je twintig jaar geleden voor ogen had? GILLIAM: Natuurlijk niet. Godzijdank. Het oorspronkelijke scenario was niet half zo goed. Aanvankelijk belandde een reclamejongen in de zeventiende eeuw en ontmoette daar de echte Don Quichot. Daar hebben we nu een reclameregisseur van gemaakt die een film draait in de streek waar hij als jonge gast nog een film over Don Quichot heeft gemaakt. Sinds die film denkt de lokale schoenmaker dat hij Don Quichot is en is het lieve dorpsmeisje een hoer geworden. Dat loste mijn Dulcinea-probleem op.

Welk Dulcinea-probleem? GILLIAM: In het boek van Cervantes is Dulcinea

een hoer, maar Don Quichot ziet dat niet in. Bij mij is ze een dorpsmeisje dat ervan droomde een bekende actrice te worden, maar bezoedeld raakte. Het verhaal van zoveel actrices: ze reizen naar Hollywood of de theaterscene in New York om een ster te worden, maar falen. Hollywood peuzelt mensen op: meisjes, jongens, mensen met talent en/of ambitie.

Ben jij wel goed geplaatst om te waarschuwen voor al te grote dromen? GILLIAM: Wellicht niet. Maar ik ken verschillen-

de vrienden die door Hollywood tot zelfmoord werden gedreven. Eigenlijk waren ze best succesvol, maar er was altijd iemand met nog meer succes. Dat is een van de gevaarlijkste dingen aan Hollywood: hoe hoog je ook klimt op de ladder, er is altijd iemand die nog beter doet en als je even niet oplet, word je langs alle

kanten voorbijgestoken. Dat leidt tot frustraties en het gevoel te falen en voor je het beseft, tuimel je in een zwart gat.

Je hoofdpersonage is een filmregisseur die vooral reclame heeft ingeblikt. Is Toby een afsplitsing van jou? GILLIAM: Toby is de regisseur die ik niet heb willen worden. De verleiding om reclamefilms te regisseren, is enorm. Je verdient daar fantastisch veel geld mee. Ik heb veel grote talenten hun gave zien verkwanselen door te bezwijken voor het grote geld en reclame te maken voor hondenbrokken en toiletpapier. De vraag die ik me dan stel: ben je dáárvoor op de wereld gekomen? Films zijn belangrijke dingen, reclamefilms zijn dat helemaal niet. Reclamefilms verkopen dromen, valse, oppervlakkige dromen. Misschien maak ik mezelf wat wijs en doet Hollywood precies hetzelfde (lacht), maar ik geloof in film.

Voelde jij je een Don Quichot in de decennia dat het niet lukte om je film van de grond te krijgen?

GILLIAM: Het voelde soms alsof ik tegen de windmolens aan het vechten was én alsof ik dat over mezelf afriep. Wie Don Quichot zaait, zal Don Quichot oogsten. Maar Don Quichot was ook mijn grote voorbeeld: de inspiratie om weer recht te krabbelen en het opnieuw te proberen nadat je genadeloos tegen het canvas werd gemept. Dat lukt wel alleen maar met een

eerste opname? GILLIAM: Ik beschouw dat als een droevig verhaal. De crash van de film was heel deprimerend, maar eigenlijk stond het in de sterren geschreven. De organisatie was een ramp. Stiekem hoopte ik dat we eerder vroeg dan laat zouden crashen. De enorme tegenslag was tegelijk ergens ook een opluchting, want daardoor kreeg ik de schuld niet. Is dat zelfzuchtig?

Het kan natuurlijk nog veel erger. Tijdens de opnames van The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus overleed je hoofdrolspeler, de fenomenale Heath Ledger. GILLIAM: Op een dag verscheen hij niet op de set. Ik zei: “Jij bent ontslagen.” Hij antwoordde: “Nee, ik ben dood.” Zoiets afgrijselijks wil ik nooit meer meemaken. Heath was familie, ik beschouwde hem bijna als mijn zoon. Ik wilde stoppen met de film, maar mijn omgeving wilde dat ik doorging. Om van hun gezeur af te zijn, zei ik dat er drie acteurs nodig waren om hem te vervangen. Dat werden Jude Law, Colin Farrell en Johnny Depp.

Johnny Depp was lang aan je Don Quichot-film verbonden. Uiteindelijk speelt Adam Driver uit Star Wars en Paterson je hoofdpersonage.

Sancho Panza aan je zijde. Mijn Sancho Panza was Nicola Pecorini (zijn vaste director of photography, nr). Er zijn nog mensen die me door dik en dun hebben gesteund, maar de meerderheid was tegen mij.

Wat hield je al die tijd op de been? GILLIAM: Drugs. Alcohol. Zonder red je het niet. (Lacht) Weet je wat me écht op de been hield? Iedereen die me op het hart drukte op te geven. In Lost in La Mancha zie je me op een bepaald moment op een pleintje in Madrid tegen de camera praten. De makers hebben me opnieuw gevolgd – ik kreeg dat idee hun niet uit het hoofd gepraat – en vroegen me om op datzelfde pleintje op dezelfde stoel plaats te nemen. In hun nieuwe film cutten ze van de jonge naar de huidige mij. Dat moet een van de gemeenste cuts in de filmgeschiedenis zijn! Zelfs ik vraag me af wie die fucking old fart toch is? (Lacht) In mijn hoofd moet ik nog meerderjarig worden, maar fysiek ben ik enorm verouderd.

GILLIAM: Adam is de beste acteur van zijn generatie. We hebben het laatste van hem nog niet gezien. Hij speelt de ups en downs van zijn personage uitstekend en vindt altijd een invalshoek die je niet meteen verwacht.

Je lange filmcarrière, met pareltjes als Brazil, 12 monkeys en Fear and loathing in Las Vegas, stelt bijna in de schaduw dat je lid was van het legendarische Monty Python. Heb je nog contact met de andere Pythons: John Cleese, Terry Jones, Eric Idle en Michael Palin? GILLIAM: We vormen een familie: we zitten dus met elkaar opgescheept voor de rest van ons leven. We gaan nooit meer iets samen maken – dat gaat echt niet gebeuren – maar we zien elkaar nog wel tijdens dinertjes en zo. Meestal roddelen we dan over de afwezige vijfde, want er ontbreekt altijd wel iemand. We blijven Monty Python recycleren, want dat levert flink wat geld op. Dankzij dat geld kunnen we onze huizen afbetalen en passen voor werk dat we niet willen doen. Alleen John Cleese heeft niet genoeg, maar dat ligt aan de hoogte van de alimentatie. (Lacht)

Hoofdstad zkt. internationaal filmfestival In Brussel is er altijd wel ergens een filmfestival bezig. De overgrote meerderheid buigt zich over een genre of een geografische of thematische niche. De bekendste voorbeelden zijn Anima (het festival van de animatiefilm) en het BIFFF (het festival van de fantastische film). Een groot, algemeen, internationaal filmfestival zoals in Gent, Berlijn, Rotterdam of San Sebastian heeft Brussel niet. Het heeft wel al vijftig jaar lang nieuwe enthousiastelingen die er een uit de grond proberen te stampen telkens als hun voorgangers uitgezongen zijn. De laatste in de lange rij initiatiefnemers is Un Soir... Un Grain, de vereniging achter het populaire Brussels Short Film Festival. Het betrekt Flagey, UGC De Brouckère, Bozar, Palace, Vendôme en Galeries bij de eerste editie van het Brussels International Film Festival (BRIFF) en wil met een circustent en terras aan de Anspachlaan de festivalsfeer aanzwengelen. Terry Gilliam is niet de enige gereputeerde gast, ook Randal Kleiser (Grease, The blue lagoon) en Claudia Cardinale, de muze van Luchino Visconti, Sergio Leone en Werner Herzog, komen naar Brussel. Het BRIFF organiseert drie competities: een nationale, een Europese en een internationale. In de internationale competitie vinden we ronkende titels terug als Las hijas de Abril van Michel Franco, Plaire, aimer et courir vite van Christophe Honoré of Dogman van Matteo Garrone. Gratis openluchtvoorstellingen van de cultfilms The big Lebowski, Le gendarme de Saint-Tropez en La haine maken het charmeoffensief compleet.

La trilogie terrifiante de Barbet Schroeder

L’habit ne fait pas le mal FR

À quoi ressemble le mal lorsqu’il est filmé en gros plan ? Réponse avec le réalisateur Barbet Schroeder invité à Bozar pour parler de sa Trilogie du Mal dont le dernier volet, une rencontre avec le visage de la terreur bouddhiste Ashin Wirathu, sera présenté en avant-première. out au long de sa carrière, le cinéaste fascinant et touche-à-tout Barbet Schroeder (76 ans) n’aura eu de cesse d’explorer les tréfonds de l’ambivalence humaine, cette chose troublante qui fait de nous des êtres ni profondément bons, ni profondément mauvais. Profondément désespérants, donc. Une sadomaso dans Maîtresse (1975), un poète marginal dans Barfly (1987), un meurtrier présumé dans Le Mystère Van Bullöw (1990), une psychopathe dans JF partagerait appartement (1992). Ses personnages de fiction, le réalisateur franco-suisse se refuse à les juger, s’attachant à les connaître, à déshabiller les mécanismes qui pervertissent leur âme. En 1974, il entame avec Général Idi Amin Dada : Autoportrait une trilogie documentaire dédiée au mal tendant vers l’absolu. Ce mal qui

ne peut être commis que par des tyrans sanguinaires, peut-il, lui aussi, revêtir les habits de l’ambiguïté ? C’est ce que le maître du cinéma prouve à travers trois portraits aussi captivants que dérangeants.

LE BOUCHER D’AFRIQUE Tout commence au début des années septante lorsque Schroeder se met en tête de faire l’(auto)portrait d’Idi Amin Dada, chef autoproclamé de la République d’Ouganda et dont la dictature meurtrière (on lui attribuera entre 100 000 et 300 000 morts) lui vaut le surnom de « Boucher d’Afrique ». Le cinéaste accepte de se mettre « au service » du despote, allant jusqu’à filmer des mises en scène imaginées par Amin Dada. Si Schroeder tend l’oreille à son interlocuteur, c’est avant tout le mystère de ce monstre aux traits sympathiques qu’il tente

de percer à jour à travers ses plans rapprochés. Sûr de lui, Amin Dada prend du plaisir à partager son quotidien de dictateur. Il emmène Schroeder à la rencontre des crocos et des éléphants, de ses soldats s’entraînant en vue de reprendre le Golan à Israël, de ses ministres à qui il jure l’élimination en cas d’insoumission, de ses dix-huit enfants barbotant autour de la piscine de sa villa. « Big Dady » déballe dans la bonne humeur sa ligne politique confuse et opportuniste, soutenant la thèse du complot juif et justifiant la Shoa, s’en prenant à Israël au nom de la cause arabe, dénonçant l’oppression et les souffrances du peuple noir. C’est sans doute dans ses fous rires, habilement prolongés par la caméra de Schroeder, que le malaise se fait le plus incommodant. « Après cent ans de colonialisme, Amin Dada ne reflète-t-il pas en partie une image déformée de nous-mêmes ? », se demande Schroeder à la fin de son film. Derrière ses envolées mégalomanes et tyranniques maquillées de bonhomie, le dictateur ougandais incarne un état du monde et ses maux. Chaque époque produit ses démons.

L’AVOCAT DE LA TERREUR Hanté par le personnage d’Amin Dada, Schroeder n’a qu’une envie, celle d’approfondir la part d’ambiguïté que renferme le mal. Le manque de financements lui fera regretter toute sa vie un documentaire manqué sur la période

parisienne des Khmers Rouges. Dans les années cinquante, des étudiants cambodgiens prenaient part à l’effervescence anticoloniale qui animait le monde universitaire parisien. Vingt ans plus tard, ils étaient les cadres d'une dictature faite de purges et de massacres. Ou quand l’utopie se transforme en tyrannie. C’est finalement auprès d’un autre agitateur de ces mêmes luttes du Quartier Latin que Schroeder déniche le deuxième sujet de sa trilogie. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Jacques Vergès milite pour l’Association des Étudiants réunionnais, dont il est le leader. Adhérant au parti communiste et fervent anticolonialiste, celui qui deviendra l’avocat français le plus controversé commence sa carrière en défendant les combattants du Front de libération nationale algérien dont Djamila Bouhired condamnée à mort pour attentat à la bombe. C’est toute l’ambivalence de l’acte terroriste que Schroeder examine dans son film L’Avocat de la Terreur. « Le terrorisme commence par des choses admirables comme donner l’indépendance à un pays et, petit à petit, ça devient quelque chose d’autre, quelque chose d’inquiétant », dit le réalisateur qui a répondu à nos questions par email. Défenseur des opprimés, révolté contre le gouvernement français et ses hypocrisies, dévoué corps et âme à ses clients (dont il lui arrive de tomber amoureux), aventurier sans attaches, l’irrévérencieux Jacques Vergès n’est pas bien différent des hommes et femmes qu’il défend et en qui il cherche son reflet. L’homme déclame sa plaidoirie comme d’autres posent des bombes. Résistant pour certains, crapule aux yeux des autres, l’avocat aux fréquentations douteuses (il n’a jamais caché son amitié

avec le dictateur Pol Pot) aura accepté de pactiser avec l’assassin de Lumumba Moïse Tshombé et de défendre les indéfendables Klaus Barbie et Slobodan Miloševic. Le XXe siècle aura prouvé en suffisance que même les idéologies les mieux intentionnées courent le risque de se gangrener. Vergès en est peut-être l’incarnation.

LE HITLER BIRMAN Ce constat dérangeant, Schroeder le transpose aux religions dans son documentaire Le Vénérable W. Le dernier de sa Trilogie du Mal, sorti en France en 2017, et dans lequel il part à la rencontre du moine bouddhiste Ashin Wirathu, leader du mouvement nationaliste 969 et du parti Ma Ba Tha, l’homme derrière le nettoyage ethnique des Birmans Rohingyas. « Toutes les religions ont à l’origine de très bons côtés qui élèvent et inspirent l’homme mais toutes finissent par se pervertir assez rapidement », dit Schroeder. Toutes les religions même la religion du pacifisme. Les nobles préceptes bouddhistes déclamés par l’actrice française Bulle Ogier tout au long du film se heurtent comme des cailloux sur un pare-brise à la machine génocidaire infernale. « Un génocide est sans doute ce qui se

rapproche du mal le plus absolu », dit Schroeder. « Au contraire des journalistes qui sont presque toujours là pour l’attaquer, Wirathu sentait que j’essayais de comprendre ». Alors que le moine extrémiste déverse sa haine en confiance, gratifiant la caméra d’un sourire et osant même le rire (le parallèle avec Amin Dada est effrayant), le spectateur découvre, images à l’appui, les étapes d’un massacre en devenir. L’émergence d’un leader professant que la race de son peuple est en danger, l’incitation au boycott des commerces musulmans, les pogroms, les maisons brûlées, la propagande de choc (via des clips musicaux, Facebook et You Tube), l’absence de réaction des autorités du pays et de la communauté internationale, les financements douteux. « Alors que je le filmais, je n’ai rien laissé transparaître de l’horreur qui m’a saisi en voyant en Wirathu ce qui s’était passé en Allemagne dans les années trente, mais aussi en Europe et aux États-Unis aujourd’hui ». L’habit ne fait pas le moine. L’expression n’aura jamais eu autant de sens. « À quoi ressemblerait votre Trilogie du Bien ? », demandons-nous à Schroeder. « Ça serait beaucoup plus difficile. On finirait peut-être par redécouvrir la naissance du mal ».

Dans La Poupée de Monsieur Silence, édité par les iconoclastes de chez Frémok, la dessinatrice Goele Dewanckel et l’écrivaine Caroline Lamarche font retentir une fable moderne depuis une prison dorée où règne le silence. — KURT SNOEKX

À quel point sommes-nous capables d’endurer la folie, le bruit et le brouhaha ? Jusqu’où le monde extérieur peut-il s’imposer à nous avant de saturer ? Et à quel point l’effet contraire peut-il être assourdissant : lorsque le silence ne peut être brisé ? Ces questions sont à l’origine d’un joyau à la fois luxuriant et épuré, un livre à l’écoute des battements irréguliers des cœurs débordants et fatigués, épris et perdus. De ce qui nous lie et finit par nous étouffer. Dans La Poupée de Monsieur Silence, l’écrivaine Caroline Lamarche et la dessinatrice Goele Dewanckel viennent enrichir le fonds florissant des Bruxellois de chez Frémok. Une petite, mais ô combien précieuse, fable qui prolifère, se fige, bouillonne et s’apaise simultanément. « Je me suis identifié à cette histoire imaginée par Caroline en 2013, elle a tout de suite enflammé mon imagination », explique Goele Dewanckel. Ensemble, elles ont construit une histoire belle et éternelle, en accord avec son temps. Au cœur de cet univers intemporel et merveilleux, vivent Monsieur Silence

et sa bien-aimée Poupée (anonyme). Dans le turbulent trop plein du monde, Monsieur Silence mène une vie importante. Il est, le seul, « chargé de donner du silence aux gens pressés, aux familles survoltées, aux gens qui n’entendent plus les oiseaux, à ceux qui vont peut-être mourir, et même parfois aux animaux ». Alors que le monde hurle en couleurs vives, Poupée mène une vie presque transparente en bleu clair. Lentement, elle se fane. L’amour de sa vie n’est presque jamais à la maison, et lorsqu’il y est, « il ne lui parle jamais », « ne joue jamais avec elle ». La rupture est aussi soudaine qu’inévitable. Poupée s’ouvre au monde, part à la recherche « du bruit du monde, du monde du bruit, du monde sonore, du monde de l’autre bord ».

AU PAYS DES MERVEILLES C’est dans cette rencontre, et l’émerveillant qui l’accompagne, que culmine La Poupée de Monsieur Silence. La discrète Poupée en blanc et bleu et la végétation somptueuse qui l’attend dehors se fondent dans des scènes qui

respirent la joie de dessiner. « J’ai une grande fascination pour la faune et la flore », explique Goele Dewanckel. « La nature peut se montrer douce et à la fois oppressante et dangereuse comme les grosses nervures des feuilles qui battent la chamade ». Et c’est pareil pour le silence. « J’ai besoin de m’isoler pour pouvoir travailler. Mais dans le village français de 110 habitants où j’habite en partie, ça peut devenir pesant. C’est pour cela que je suis contente de vivre à Gand aussi (en tant qu’enseignante à la LUCA School of Art, NDLR) ». C’est peut-être dans cet entre-deux que La Poupée de Monsieur Silence trouve sa place. Lorsque Poupée sort de sa cage dorée, elle croise des traces humaines, des rencontres fugaces que Monsieur Silence a laissées derrière lui. Ces bribes lui offrent ce qu’elle n’a pas connu d’intimité. Telle une mosaïque, nous recomposons l’autre et nous-même. L’être humain qui se décompose dans les rumeurs parle de nombreuses voix. Ce sont des bruits qui créent la vie, entre les silences à choyer.

The Hum Comes from the Stumuch

For Gladstone Gallery’s summer show, guest curator Kasper Bosmans has created poetry with the hum coming from his own “stumuch” and those of six other kindred spirits. “We all share a very particular kind of chloroplast that can only bear one type of sunlight.” — KURT SNOEKX

asper Bosmans is curating. That was all it took to excite our curiosity. The artist who avidly picks at all the things that come into his head, and like a spider in the web of the world, spins sticky threads between them all in an intensely attractive visual language, was invited to bring together a group of artists to celebrate the summer at Gladstone Gallery. “A little party,” is how he himself describes it, and also: “Very egotistical. I’m making a little pavilion for myself. [Laughs] I just hope other people enjoy it too.” Those “other people” can be very hopeful. Kasper Bosmans is exceptionally well-placed to forge unexpected connections. The still only 27-year-old, Lommel-born artist who moved to Brussels for a residency at Wiels, hits a nerve from Tallinn to Los Angeles and from Cologne

to Hong Kong, by combining his Wikipedia-esque factoids, knowledge of folklore, and juicy anecdotes in a multiplicity of forms – including painted legends that depict their associative readings. He is likewise forging connections as the guest curator of The Hum Comes from the Stumuch. “The exhibition was composed relatively intuitively, but I do increasingly see a leitmotif that runs through the whole thing. I bring several practices together that have influenced me over the past few years, to explore what the underlying connections are. It is a fun way to involve everyone in one big conversation.”

ANY WAY THE WIND BLOWS Someone like the 84-year-old Marinus Boezem, for example, who was a pioneer of

Dutch conceptual art and whose Rietveld bewogen door ventilatoren will be part of The Hum Comes from the Stumuch. “The work was created in 1968, and has never been presented since. It consists of a mountain of sand with reeds sticking out. A fan makes them bend in the breeze. It is an illustration of the form of the wind. A kind of invisible sculpture in which the reeds are the language that represents air. We are also showing a number of the weather charts that he made in the 1990s in collaboration with the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute and on which he maps high and low pressure areas from different periods on top of one another. This creates an impossible meteorological summary. It’s a very funny way of understanding the world; both very poetic and objective at the same time.”

The Congolese autodidact Jean Katambayi Mukendi draws from his own life as the foundation of his work. “Both his parents worked for the Gécamines. After the ore mines were nationalized and the mining activities were reduced, Jean wanted to keep the knowledge about all this machinery alive, since an entire society had been structured around it. He thought it was very important to learn the techniques in an attempt to be self-sufficient and thus to evolve to a sustainable and peaceful society, by carving out an independent position for himself. In his work, this is expressed through proposals for the future, machines made of batteries, cardboard, perishable, and inferior materials. Like his Marsphairlines, for example, a kind of aeroplane fin in MDF, on which he has written a mathematical equation

The Hum Comes from the Stumuch is also showing work by the Dutch, Brussels-based artist Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide), who uses colour codes to discuss the political dismantling of Bauhaus and then associates that with feminism, migration, and modernism. And work by Trevor Yeung, a “mainland Chinese artist” who lives in Hong Kong and manipulates the growth of plants so that he can turn them into allegories of his personal life and society at large. And by Marthe Ramm Fortun, “a very intuitive Norwegian performance artist who has a very refreshing, open attitude and who uses lined, Norwegian granite to make geological writing paper that she uses for a performance in buses. Finally, Jack Smith is an American artist who influenced the New York pop art scene with exuberant videos, and whose archive, which is managed by Barbara Gladstone in New York, contains a lot of

paraphernalia and props, in addition to his schizophrenic and critical work. It also contains many memos that influenced his films and titles, but also very simple notes that were scribbled with great willpower. They are not only very beautiful, but also very important as representatives of his attitude and imagination. We used them for the exhibition and that is also where we got our title.” “The Hum Comes from the Stumuch is all about how everyone tries to grasp the world,” Kasper Bosmans says. “From all sides. Sometimes very greedily but sometimes also very abstemiously, purely, and calculatedly… About how all six of these artists try to establish a very specific view of a very specific subject and thus create a

resulting in the date 22 March 2016. On that date, the day of the attacks in Brussels, he missed the opening of his exhibition in Antwerp. Marsphairlines actually talks about how idiotic it is to send probes to Mars while so many people are stuck, immobile in the developing world. These different speeds cause conflict. Just like in the work of Marinus Boezem, Jean Katambayi Mukendi’s practice is marked by an objective attitude. He considers his works to be educational objects, infrastructure that brings everything together: philosophy, electricity, mathematics, politics… They are peace machines, methods of thinking up a sustainable society.” “In the moment that you make an object,” Kasper Bosmans continues, “you also get something off your chest. That distance gives you more insight. We need the Marsphairlines and Marinus’s meteorological charts to understand things better and to feel their form. I also think their interdisciplinary perspectives are much more important than innovativeness. Art and innovation are closely linked nowadays. Google pumps an enormous amount of money into it. And that is very important, but it is not my genre. A nineteenth-century associative approach will already get us very far. I enjoy being an amateur, a smallholder. That small scale can be very enriching.”

They are all storytellers who create from the gut, a kind of primordial need, which is perhaps more about communicating than it is about the deepest stirrings of the soul. It is about giving yourself autonomy and developing your own system to relate to your subjects and the world.” Not merely from the hum coming from the “stumuch”, but in a well-wrought, mature way. “Each of the artists needs a specific nutrient, a very particular kind of chloroplast that can only bear one type of sunlight. [Laughs] That is the common denominator.”

batterie est venue renforcer cette idée. Pourtant, dans les faits, le nom du groupe est plus ancien. Il remonte à ma rencontre avec Alice et à quelques affinités insoupçonnées que nous entretenions chacune de notre côté. Dans la famille d’Alice, il y a six sœurs. Chez moi, nous sommes trois sœurs. Il se fait qu’à l’époque, je vendais des vêtements rétro sur une boutique en ligne qui s’appelait Sisters Vintage. De son côté, Alice gérait Sixsoeurs, un atelier spécialisé dans les fripes et la conception de costumes. Et puis, elle créait des bijoux sous le nom de Septième Sœur. Toutes ces coïncidences nous ont conduits à S O R O R.

Le groupe est-il une vitrine toute trouvée pour les bijoux d’Alice Ably et ses créations vestimentaires ? CHIARAMONTE : Nous arborons souvent ses

ouvelle étoile dans la constellation du rock bruxellois, S O R O R explore des galaxies psychédéliques, new wave et bruitistes. Intense, lettrée et terriblement nerveuse, la formule proposée par le quatuor ravive le feu sacré de quelques légendes éternelles (Sonic Youth, Throwing Muses), sans négliger l’impact d’héroïnes contemporaines (Warpaint). De bonnes intentions, de l’élégance et du beau jeu : S O R O R se profile comme une formation à suivre de près.

S O R O R est apparu depuis peu sur les radars. Quelle est l’origine du projet ? SOPHIE CHIARAMONTE : Pendant des années, je

me suis impliquée dans les activités d’un groupe. Jusqu’au jour où j’ai ressenti le besoin d’écrire des choses plus personnelles. À partir de 2015, j’ai composé quelques chansons à la basse. Et puis, au détour d’une vente de fringues vintage, j’ai rencontré Alice Ably. Elle jouait de la guitare et aspirait à travailler avec d’autres personnes. J’en ai profité pour lui faire écouter mes démos. Pendant un an, nous avons revu et corrigé ces morceaux en duo. Nous avons aussi développé des harmonies

créations. Parce que nous les trouvons belles, pas pour les vendre ou les exposer. Là, par exemple, je porte un bracelet confectionné par Alice. C’est un travail sur le cuir. La patine est assez marquée. Toutes ses productions sont marquées par l’usure du temps. Cette notion traverse également les chansons de S O R O R. Dans les fringues comme en musique, nous créons avec des matières recyclées. Chez S O R O R, nous ne sommes pas vraiment en adéquation avec l’époque, ses évolutions technologiques et sa perception des réseaux sociaux. Nos personnalités sont très éloignées des réalités de la société high-tech. Chez nous, l’approche est plutôt manuelle et artisanale. Pour autant, nous sommes convaincus que S O R O R est un produit de son temps.

Depuis la polémique #MeToo et les accusations portées contre le producteur américain Harvey Weinstein, le militantisme féministe est en vogue. La musique de S O R O R s’inscrit-elle dans ce contexte ?

CHIARAMONTE : Les racines latines de S O R O R

renvoient au concept de « sororité », un terme utilisé par les féministes françaises comme un équivalent féminin de « fraternité ». Cela étant, nous ne sommes pas dans la revendication politique ou sexuelle. Nos chansons reposent plutôt sur une vision poétique que politique. Dans ma vie de tous les jours, je suis enseignante. Je suis donc ultrasensible aux problématiques sociales qui agitent le monde d’aujourd’hui. J’y réagis au quotidien en tant que prof, mais aussi en tant que femme. Mais, dans la musique, j’aspire plutôt à des paroles universelles et transgenres. Les textes de S O R O R (en anglais, NDLR) se penchent notamment sur la notion d’individualité au cœur de la collectivité. Qu’on soit homme ou femme, comment trouve-t-on sa place dans la société moderne ? C’est une question à laquelle nous cherchons des réponses.

Avant de jouer ensemble au sein de S O R O R, vous avez connu d’autres expériences collectives avec des groupes comme The dIPLOMAT, Moaning Cities ou Walking Ghost Phase. Tirez-vous profit de ces différents apprentissages ? MÉLISSA MORALES : C’est certain. Par le passé, quand un musicien arrivait avec une bonne idée au cours du processus créatif, on gambergeait. On tournait parfois en rond. Notre fonctionnement était hésitant. Avec S O R O R, on se pose vite les bonnes questions et on se fait confiance. Chacun est écouté et maître de son instrument. C’est notre force.

vocales. Fin 2016, nous avons cherché d’autres musiciens pour amener ce projet plus loin. C’est comme ça que la batteuse Mélissa Morales et le guitariste Thibaut Lambrechts sont venus compléter le groupe. Dans sa formule actuelle, S O R O R existe depuis septembre 2017.

À ce jour, la discographie de S O R O R repose sur trois titres disponibles en version digitale. Pensez-vous publier un album ou un objet physique d’ici la fin de l’année ? CHIARAMONTE : Nous n’avons pas de cahier des

charges. Nous avons enregistré nos trois premiers morceaux, à l’arrache, en une seule journée. L’idée était surtout de se faire un peu connaître, de promouvoir le nom du groupe et de choper l’un ou l’autre concert. Nous avons aujourd’hui la chance d’enchaîner de belles dates sans vraiment démarcher auprès des salles. Nous existons grâce au bouche-àoreille. On se laisse porter, pour voir où tout cela nous mène. Rien n’est planifié, mais nous espérons poursuivre sur notre lancée pour enregistrer de nouveaux titres et, qui sait, un premier disque.

achel Weisz’s absolute class stands unquestioned, but she sometimes (The Mercy, Oz the Great and Powerful) takes missteps. That is not the case in Disobedience, a film that she spent ten years trying to make. The actress from The Lobster, The Deep Blue Sea, and The Mummy plays a photographer who made it big in New York and who returns to north London for her father’s funeral. This causes quite a stir because Ronit broke ties with the Orthodox Jewish community that her father led as a rabbi. Her complex mourning for her rejected/beloved father is overshadowed by a reunion with the love of her youth Esti. But Esti, in a great performance by Rachel McAdams from True Detective and The Notebook, is married to the man who is supposed to succeed the deceased rabbi. Should they succumb to their resurgent desires? Is disobedience a right in a repressive, patriarchal environment that thinks it can interfere with your sexual preferences and restrict your individual freedoms? There are no simplistic answers. Breaking away from your community, your past, and part of your identity is anything but romantic. Disobedience is not absolutely

overwhelming, but it does stay with you in the same way that a good book does. In his first film in English, Chilean director Sebastián Lelio takes his time to unpack the story, forbids any sensationalism, and dares to make the atmosphere of repressed feelings and tastelessness even more uncomfortable with an intentionally distant style and score. Just like in Gloria and the Oscar-winning Una mujer fantástica, his greatest talent lies in directing the actors. Both Rachels give their characters a depth and complexity that you rarely see at the cinema.

Disobedience overweldigt niet, maar ontvouwt zich rustig, wars van sensatie en met een ongemakkelijke afstandelijke stijl en score. Beide Rachels tonen een complexiteit die je zelden tegenkomt. NL

Son deuil pour un père à la fois aimé et rejeté est éclipsé par une réunion avec son amour de jeunesse Esti, mariée à l’homme qui doit succéder à son père. Doivent-elles succomber à leurs désirs ? La désobéissance est-elle un droit dans un environnement répressif ? La transgression n’est pas envahissante, elle se déploie calmement dans un style inconfortable et distant, s’interdisant tout sensationnalisme. Les deux Rachelle traduisent une complexité qu’on ne croise pas souvent. FR

Het duurt even voor je doorhebt dat er niets in de mooi verpakte doos zit, omdat je scherpstelt op de vraag of Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett en Rihanna het in Ocean’s 8 wel even goed gaan doen als George Clooney, Brad Pitt en Matt Damon in de boterzachte, hippe heistfilm Ocean’s eleven en de veel minder geslaagde sequels Ocean’s twelve en Ocean’s thirteen. Dat is een ridicule vraag, want uiteraard doen deze dames niet onder voor deze heren. Is Blanchett alleen al geen twee Pitten waard? Ze worden helaas in de steek gelaten door de risicoloze mise-en-scène en de vlakke beeldregie van Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) en een onvergeeflijk totaal gebrek aan spanning. Een heistfilm hoeft niet de hele tijd spannend te zijn, maar helemaal niet, dat gaat natuurlijk niet. Bullock speelt Debbie Ocean, die net als haar broer Danny (Clooney) uitzonderlijk begaafd is in het bedenken van ingewikkelde roven die de medewerking vereisen van een collectief met zeer specifieke talenten. Ze laat haar oog vallen op een diamanten halsketting van 150 miljoen dollar. Alles loopt op wieltjes – de film verveelt niet – tot je beseft dat een heistfilm maar saai is als alles op wieltjes loopt en dat de topactrices het moeten doen met personages die samenvallen met één talent of karaktertrek. Au Bifff, le jury de la Septième Parallèle, la compétition réservée aux films plus expérimentaux de ce festival du film fantastique, attribuait une mention spéciale à cette variation italienne de Faust. Il n’en a pas fallu plus pour attiser notre curiosité. Comme le laisse craindre le titre, le film se déroule en un seul endroit : un café anonyme. Un mystérieux individu reçoit, l’un après l’autre, des hommes et femmes dont il écoute les désirs profonds et les complaintes. L’un demande la guérison de son fils, l’autre aimerait être plus belle. Un aveugle veut recouvrer la vue, une nonne aimerait recevoir un signe de l’existence de Dieu. L’homme ténébreux peut arranger ça mais demande à ses clients d’accomplir en échange des tâches abominables. Les histoires sont bien choisies, les dialogues sont pleins de verve et nous interrogent sur notre propre inclination à conclure ce genre de pacte. Le mystère plane sur la nature diabolique du protagoniste. Rien à dire sur le scénario, si ce n’est qu’il joue un rôle majeur. Vous pouvez suivre The Place les yeux fermés. Sa place se trouve peut-être davantage à la radio qu’au cinéma. (NR)

Malheureusement, elle sont délaissées par une mise en scène sans prise de risques et la direction superficielle de Gary Ross ainsi qu’un manque de tension. Mortel pour un film de casse, tout comme une brochette de grandes actrices se dépatouillant avec des personnages qui n’ont qu’un seul talent ou trait de caractère.

In een anoniem cafeetje ontvangt een mysterieus heerschap de ene na de andere mens en luistert naar hun diepste wensen. De Man kan die waarmaken, maar vraagt in ruil dat zijn cliënten een gruwelijke opdracht uitvoeren. De verhalen zijn goed gekozen, worden met verve gebracht en doen nadenken over hoe ver jij zou gaan om een hartenwens in vervulling te laten gaan. Ook op het scenario is weinig aan te merken. Het probleem is dat je deze Italiaanse variatie op Faust met de ogen dicht nog kan volgen.

Yes, in Ocean’s 8 Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, and Rihanna show themselves to be equally good and complex robbers as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon in Ocean’s Eleven. Unfortunately, they are let down by the spineless mise en scène and the shallow direction by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), and an unforgiveable total lack of tension. That’s deadly for a heist film, as is a series of great actresses who are stuck playing characters that have only one talent or character trait.

A mysterious man sits in an anonymous little café listening while one person after another comes to tell him about their deepest desires. The man can make them come true, but in exchange he asked his clients to do terrible things. The stories are well-chosen, they are told with verve, and they make you think about how far you would go to make your dreams come true. The script is also entertaining. The problem is that you could sit through this Italian Faust variation with your eyes closed and not miss much.

Bravo, Madame!

istro fare is typically gargantuan. Full of meaty clichés that are reminiscent of La Grande Bouffe (“Blow-Out”), it has its share of iconic dishes, from pig’s trotter croquettes to Morteau sausage swimming in lentils. In other words, all the things we love. That said, we equally appreciate when the genre explores other horizons. Bistro Madame does just that, combining Southern alchemy and exquisite skill. The duo responsible for the place have already made names for themselves in Brussels, one for her work at Le Petit Canon, a well-known snack bar, and the other for showing talent as the sous-chef at Kitchen 151, a place influenced by new-generation Israeli cuisine. With references like that, needless to say, we were feeling pretty confident when we stepped inside this little neighbourhood restaurant. The decor is unpretentious, with bottle-green walls, wooden furniture, and a pretty granite counter. The atmosphere is ideal for customers who love good food but don’t necessarily want to broadcast their tastes to the entire world. If you’re into food porn, showing off, and egotistical self-celebration, this place is not for you. The service is efficient and friendly, setting the right tone for a pleasantly simple menu, which is set out on a board with three starters and as many main courses and desserts. Big eaters, like us, can whet their appetite with an amuse-bouche of clam stir-fry (€8) with plenty of garlic and cherry tomatoes. We chose a refreshing starter of courgette soup (€12). Full of complementary flavours – green asparagus, pine nuts, basil, hazelnut oil, and crunchy peas – it was like a caress on the palette. Inspired by this

freshness and market-garden appeal, we chose a similarly vegetable-based main course: a fresh risotto, raw tomato coulis, crisp vegetables, and fresh herbs (€16). Spot on! The dish was the epitome of springtime, bursting with colours and flavours. Dans les appartements, dans la rue ou dans ce bar ucclois à la programmation décoiffante. Habituées aux espaces réduits, elles ont développé une chorégraphie minimaliste et expressive qui joue avec les images. Dans le cabaret pop et absurde Visions of Musical, les deux danseuses, accompagnées par la musicienne Pak Yan Lau, s’amusent à détourner ces chansons pop qu’on a tous dans l’oreille. The Hungarian composer Béla Bartók made two productions for the stage, and both caused scandal. The Miraculous Mandarin is less of a fairy-tale than it sounds: the regular client of a brothel – spoiler alert – meets with a violent death. And in Bluebeard’s Castle, blood even drips from the roses in the garden. The doublebill is performed by habitués: conductor Alain Altinoglu and his wife, mezzo soprano Nora Gubisch, have performed this overpowering music in numerous opera houses. John Moreland has a background in punk and hardcore, but seduced by his dad’s Steve Earle records, he now marinates his seasoned voice in frayed country, folk, and Americana that gallops across the wide heartlands of the USA. The 32-year-old singer, who tattooed his home state Oklahoma on his fingers, is surrounded by the Dust Bowl Souls, a band that is gradually preferring acoustic guitars to electronic ones by far. On Big Bad Luv, his seventh album that was released last year, the self-proclaimed sad bastard is still wrestling with love, happiness, and religion, but he is gradually letting the sun break through the grey blanket of clouds. Albert Dadas (1860-1907) was a simple labourer from Bordeaux who suffered from wanderlust. He would take journeys that lasted days or even years. Inspired by his story, photographer Philippe Herbet set off in Dadas’s footsteps by repeating his longest journey, from Valenciennes to Moscow, accompanied by his ghost. Herbet’s photos capture the journey in moments, landscapes, and (self-)portraits, in which appearance and disappearance collide, outside of time.
