Golf News

August 2024 was a very hot and dry month, but it helped our golf course become hard and fast for our Club Championships. A big congratulations goes out to Tom Herron (Senior Champion), Singh Ahluwalia (Super Senior Champion), Terri Sells (Ladies Champion), and Jack Doyle, who won both the Junior Club Championship and the Men's Club Championship. I want to say thank you to Brad Erickson and his team on the Maintenance Staff for preparing and presenting the golf course in such excellent condition for our major championships. It is hard to believe that the golf course has not even been open a full year yet, and the work they have done is tremendous.

August also saw the return of the BMGA Calcutta, another favorite on everyone's calendar. This year, we had another record-breaking jackpot of over $134k. Congratulations to our first-place team of Evan Cole, Byron Tubb, Robert Bosse, and Mike Snider. This tournament is the ultimate combination of fun, strategy, and high stakes.

As we move out of summer and into the fall, we look forward to more major golf tournaments such as the 18HL Member Guest, 9HL Member Guest, and the BMGA Member Member. The pool season is ending, football season is just beginning, and we look forward to the changing season with new colors and cooler temperatures. With the arrival of Fall also comes the arrival of new apparel in the Golf Shop. Pullovers, pants, sweaters, and more will be coming soon including some apparel with the new alternate spearhead logo. Stop by the Golf Shop soon to take advantage of your Buyers Club discount and see what's to offer from your favorite brands.

JGA’s Fall Semester – Junior Golf Clinics School is back in session!

After a long, hot summer, I am looking forward to the fall Lower temperatures, the changing of the colors, and football are just a few great things about the upcoming season, and the 2024 Junior Golf program has more to offer! During the months of September and October, we will host a six (6) week clinic series to help our young golfers continue working on their game and keep the summer golf bug in full effect throughout the dog days of winter!

The Fall Semester will be open to junior golfers between the ages of 8-12. We are looking for twelve (12) juniors who are committed to learning and growing in the sport The clinics will be on Mondays, from 4:45 PM to 5:45 PM. Click the picture below for the information page, including all clinic dates, curriculum, and the cost of the semester. Sign-ups are for the semester, so please check the dates against your child’s current schedule. We understand that “things happen”, but want to provide the best learning experience for each participant, and part of that is a consistent class Registration begins Friday, September 6 at 9:00 AM.

Uncommon Lies In & Around Bunkers

Murphy’s Law is a supposed law of nature which expresses, “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong!” Throughout my experience with tournament golf, I have been hit square in the mouth by this “law”. We spend most of our practice time on flat to fairly flat lies. But, once we tee it up in a tournament, we will inherently be faced with circumstances and situations never faced before.

Each Monday in September, beginning September 9, look for an instructional video in the BCC Weekly Update e-mail to help you combat some of these uncommon lies The focus will be in and around the new Bill Bergin designed bunkers.

The first step in conquering the shot is assessing the lie Make sure you know where the safe spots are that you can access with the shot, and know your options for a ball that you deem unplayable. Sometimes a one or two stroke penalty may be the best choice. If you determine that you are able to hit the shot as it lies, there are several adjustments that need to be made to predict a good result!

September is one of the best golf months of the year, as the temperatures will start to cool down and the golf course is in perfect shape! I hope this information, and the videos, help you escape unfortunate breaks and keep your round intact! For more information on uncommon lies and the adjustments/options, contact Andrew by e-mail (andrew@bccgolf.org) or by phone (615) 373-2552 Ext. 502

See you on the range, Andrew Kincaid

Golf Course Maintenance

Dear BCC Members,

The Turf Team would like to congratulate the winners of the Club Championship! We were proud of the conditions of our new course and know it was a stern but fair test of golf for all participants. Also, a big congratulations to First Assistant Superintendent Blake McDowell and his wife Chelsea on the birth of their first son, Wylder!

As we near the end of our first summer on new turf, and look forward to Fall, I would like to reflect on the year and also look forward to what will be happening on the course. A fairly wet and hot July gave way to a very hot and dry August. We made an application of a growth regulator in late July to combat the scalping and clippings we were experiencing in the fairways and tees. This is considered a Best Management Practice on all golf courses and we have historically always made these applications every year I have been Superintendent. This year we experienced some cosmetic turf "bronzing" for a couple weeks that was unexpected. It really helped deal with the clippings and growth, but was a little too aggressive for my liking. In the future, we will still be using these important tools, but with a more conservative approach in rate and timing. The positive side of this application is that it really increased turf health going into this extended drought we are experiencing. This drought period has certainly impacted everyone's yards and water bills. The positive news is that with more drought tolerant turf on our new golf course, and a new irrigation system, we have seen very healthy and playable turf through this entire month. Sure, some areas may look dryer than normal, but I can assure you the golf course is probably the healthiest I've ever seen it. Dry periods like this also help us dial in irrigation in very specific areas and we can now micro-manage areas that need more attention. With this new system, we are using 20-30% less water than previous years. Even in the middle of a drought, the new system has helped us manage our water resources to the utmost in a very important time.

Our new Tifeagle greens have continually improved through the year and I'm very happy with turf health, appearance and playability. These greens have been a joy to manage and will be a point of pride for years to come!

We continue to evaluate areas throughout this grow-in year. The areas left of #15 fairway and #16 green were initially planted in fescue, but will be installing Tahoma in those areas for look and playability. We will also be bushhogging the Native Fescues at the end of September/early October. At the same time, we will be addressing any thin areas, areas where Bermudagrass has grown, weedy areas, etc. These are all expected challenges in areas like this and I'm confident these areas will continue to improve through next year.

All in all, I'm very proud of where we are and we've come a long way since last year at this time. I hope you are all enjoying your course and I look forward to seeing you this Fall on the course!
