Golf News

The heart of the golf season is upon us! Kids are out of school, warm temperatures have finally arrived, and we now have daylight past 8pm! May was a great month for golf at BCC. Tournaments such as the Match Play Qualifier, BMGA Medley, Memorial Day Scramble, and the return of the Steak & Brew all took place in May with great turnouts and exceptional weather despite the rest of the month being quite wet. Junior clinics wrapped up during the first half of the month and so began the PGA Jr. League sessions with two teams competing once again this year. Our ladies golf programs continue to thrive as well with the Up to Par series, 18HL, and 9HL all seeing great participation. What a great time to be a member at BCC! As we look forward to June we have another great buffet of golf events that include the Senior Member Guest, US Open Stroke Play, Father's Day Open, and the highly anticipated Stakes tournament. We also look forward to one of the largest outing events to be hosted at BCC benefiting the Tunnel to Towers Foundation on June 2nd. You won't want to miss any of these! *Now that the tee sheets are getting full, I wanted to provide a few reminders on some of the basic golf operations particulars.

Guest Restrictions: Tee Times on Friday from 10am to 2pm are for members only. Guests are permitted on Saturdays after 1pm.

Tee Times can be made using the BCC app/website three days in advance. When hosting guests, please check in with the Golf Shop prior to teeing off to ensure proper billing. Reminder, members are now allowed to pay for their guest fees with a credit card in the Golf Shop. Guests are not allowed to pay their own fee with a credit card, but are allowed to charge back to local, reciprocal clubs.

Tee Times on Saturday prior to 11am are for primary members only.

Shirts must be tucked in at all times while on the Golf Course or Practice Ranges. Hats must be worn with the bill facing forward at all times while on the Golf Course or Practice Ranges Golf carts should observe the 90 degree rule when permitted off the cart path.

Only individuals with a government-issued driver's license are allowed to operate golf carts. Scooters, bikes, skateboards, and the like are not allowed on the golf course at any time.

Remember to fill your divots, fix your ball marks, and rake your bunkers. We should always leave the golf course in better condition than when we found it.

The pace of play time-par is 4 hours... 1:50 on the front, 2:05 on the back, with a 5-minute turn time. Yellow range balls are flight-restricted and should be used when hitting drivers and woods Range balls sent over the Practice Range fence present a significant safety hazard risk. If your Practice Range ball looks to be heading in the direction of golfers playing on holes #1 or #10, please yell fore.

Remember to post your score to your handicap account on the day of play. Remember, we all share a common responsibility to uphold the cherished standards that BCC has held dear for more than 70 years. Now that we get the privilege of enjoying the newly renovated golf course, it is up to us to help maintain it. We look forward to another great summer at BCC and can't wait to see you on the course soon.

Swing Change 101

Stay the Course! How to go about swing changes and handling the ebb and flow of your golf game!

Growing up, baseball was my “number 1” sport I played on a summer travel team coached by Los Angeles Angels scouts, who owned and operated a local baseball academy. During high school and college, I taught hitting, fielding, catching, and pitching lessons at the academy. That experience jumpstarted my passion for teaching. Teaching is a very rewarding endeavor and has afforded me the opportunity to create so many relationships. On the golf side, I have worked with some students for almost 15 years, watching them grow in golf, watching their children grow up, and walking with students through the ups and downs of golf, and life! After 20 plus years of teaching, I have found that whether it is baseball or golf, changes are difficult Here are some steps to take to help you make swing changes and encourage improvement!

1. Identify and Define the Change:

a. Why are you making the change?

i. Understand the root cause of the issue you're trying to fix.

b. What specific movement or feeling are you trying to change?

i Be precise about what you're trying to do

2 Practice in a Controlled Environment:

a. Use the driving range as your training grounds, and don’t be afraid of using a tee with all shots.

i.Focus on the movement without the added pressure of hitting a ball on the ground or performance on the course.

b. Start slow!

i Rehearse the change in slow motion, focusing on the feel associated with the movement

3 Gradually Increase Complexity:

a.Work with shorter clubs first

i.40% of shots during a round of golf are with short irons and wedges.

ii.This allows you to feel the change more easily before moving to longer clubs.

b.Increase speed gradually

i Once you're comfortable with the new movement at a slower speed, gradually increase your swing speed

c Introduce real-world conditions

i.Gradually bring the change to the course, starting with practice rounds before playing for score.

4. Monitor Progress:

a.Take regular breaks during practice sessions

i.Allow your brain time to process the new information and “muscle memory” to form.

b Track your progress

i Keep track of your ball flight, distance, and other relevant metrics to see if the change is having the desired effect.

c.Be patient!

i.Swing changes take time and effort. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results immediately.

d.Don't forget the short game

i Keep your short game sharp while you're working on your full swing A solid short game can help you stay in the game during the transition

Golf Course Maintenance

Dear Members,

Now that winter is coming to a close, we are hopeful that Spring and Summer will be better. All kidding aside, this Spring has been one for the record books, and not the good ones. The National Weather Service has stated that May 2025 was the 7th wettest all time and that our yearly rainfall total for 2025 through May is the 5th highest rainfall total all time, and the wettest such period since 1975. This has also been the coldest spring I can remember since I started my turf career in Middle TN in 1998. I certainly feel any frustration that the golf course has not progressed this year as we would like, and we appreciate your patience as we continue to work hard to make the golf experience the best we can at BCC.

I'm very proud of our staff and their dedication. Every week, we have been presented with challenges we have to adapt to and keep moving forward. We have only been able to get one load of sod so far due to the high rainfall at the sod farm, but we have more scheduled for the middle of June, or hopefully sooner. We plan to tackle some of the areas of high visibility with sod from our nursery, and we will also be treating the thinner areas as we have in the past, with love and fertilizer. In late May, we met with Bill Bergin to discuss drainage projects such as 3 fairway and drying up green complex swales, along with shade/tree issues, and adding some teeing space to certain red/white tees. We will slowly be addressing these issues throughout the season and then tackle some in the winter months when it has less effect on golf rounds. All in all, he is very pleased with how the golf course has progressed and feels we are way ahead of many courses in the Southeast who are dealing with this cold, wet weather.

Despite some small setbacks, we are still poised to have a great season of golf, and we look forward to seeing you on the links.
