A Letter from our Interim General Manager

BCC Leadership Update

BCC Members,

It’s been an action packed few weeks here at BCC for me starting with the Stakes Tournament, moving to the July 3 celebrations on to a couple townhall meetings to potentially purchase a property then last week finally get a change to really drill down into our operations with staff. I thank everyone for their openness and for all the open, honest conversations as change moves on. One of the many changes that just unchanged is that Alex Scott has decided to remain at the Club in a refined role, stepping away from day-to-day operations and shifting his focus to three key areas: Membership, Human Resources, and Information Technology. I’m excited to get these three very important components to new levels with enhanced “member experience” as the guiding light. I believe we are all better off with Alex deciding to stay with us. I promise that personally, I am. rd

Additionally, please join me in congratulating Courtney Massey on her wellearned promotion to Clubhouse Manager. Courtney has served BCC in various roles over the years and brings strong institutional knowledge, passion and shares my thoughts on “let’s dare to be great” as the destination. I’m excited to work with Courtney the next few months reorganizing and reimagining our Clubhouse “member experience” and I have no doubt Courtney is going to take BCC Clubhouse operations to new exciting levels. As Courtney enthusiastically proclaimed, I am ready!!

I’ve said it several times but it’s worth repeating, y’all have a tremendous club and staff here at BCC and it’s time to polish the apple with “points for style” becoming our theme song. I’ve told the Board that I believe BCC is at 90% and that the last 10% is the finer points which we can get to with vision and focus - - be sure to congratulate Alex and Courtney and don’t hesitate to stop by or just say hello when you see me wandering around the club. It’s an honor to be here with you and I hope to play positive, solid roll for BCC members and staff during the General Manager transition. Thanks everyone, Wally Smith

A Letter from our Golf Pro

It’s hard to believe that summer is coming to an end. School is back in session, the days are getting shorter, but the fun is not nearly over yet at BCC!

What a blast we had during the school's-out period of the year. The junior program has continued to flourish with three Summer camps, two PGA Jr. League teams, a member-guest, and a soon to be played club championship. Our PGA Jr. League travel team finished the season undefeated while the instructional team was setting the groundwork for a possible PGA Jr. League dynasty to come! A big thank you goes out to Andrew, Mike, Skyler, Matt, Cade, Jared, and Callyn for helping grow, not only the club, but the game of golf as a whole by being a wonderful, positive influence on our junior golfers.

July is always a great time to be at the club. This year's July 4th Scramble had another great turnout despite scorching temperatures. Even though the hot environment can make it difficult to give 100% to a four-hour round of golf, the new Tahoma and Tif Eagle Bermuda grass loves it! Thank you to Brad, Blake, Ryan, Stephen, and everyone on the Maintenance team for getting and keeping BCC in such great shape. This year we continued our normal aerification schedule shortly after the July 4th holiday and the greens have come back in phenomenal fashion. If you haven't been out to play recently, you need to make time!

As we look forward to August, we have another great round of events to be played. The Thursday night League of Champions returns in what is always a fun, relaxing way to end out the week. The Jr & Sr Club Championship takes place on the first weekend where Club President, Tom Herron, looks to add a 13th Sr CC trophy to the shelf. One of our larger events of the year, the Men's Midway Member Member, returns to a new spot on the calendar and we look forward to a great week/end of competition.

As always, please remember to do your part by remembering to fill your divots, rake your bunkers, and repair your ball k L ki f d i you on the course soon!

Golf Course Maintenance

Dear Members, August is here and that means more hot days, kids getting ready for school, and football right around the corner. The golf course has really enjoyed the heat of July, and there is a lot of great golf ahead here at BCC. Our aerification week went very well, and the golf course has really responded. Turf health is the best I have seen since we reopened and the golf course only increases daily in playability and beauty. We'll continue to fine tune some areas that need attention, as this year has brought its challenges, but overall we are in a great spot as we enjoy the rest of summer and prepare for Fall. I'm proud of the work our team has done this year and I hope you enjoy your experience at the club. It's a great time to be a member at BCC and we look forward to seeing you on the links.

Consistent Contact for Better Distance Control

Guarantee solid contact with these tips!

Last month was the first part of a short game series based on creating consistent contact If you missed the article, click HERE for information on establishing a proper set-up, the backswing, and the downswing! If you were able to get to the short game green for some practice time, I hope you were able to implement some of the technique to help you gain more control in the short game!

This month, I am going to talk through two factors that are crucial for better contact:

1 )Vertical Swing Plane

2 )Wrist Hinge – to hinge or not to hinge

Per Trackman, Vertical Swing Plane (VSP) refers to the angle of the club head's path relative to the horizon during the swing It is essentially how vertical or flat the swing is, measured by tracking the club head's movement in three dimensions, specifically from about knee-high on the downswing to knee-high on the follow-through. A higher VSP number indicates a more vertical swing, while a lower number suggests a flatter swing. When we look at the VSP of the best chippers of the golf ball, we tend to see a higher VSP (picture below-left), meaning they are keeping the clubhead out in front of them and working up and down, not in or out. When the club gets inside, or behind the hands, the clubface starts to point open to the target and creates a need for more manipulation in the downswing When we add more variables to the equation, the problem gets exponentially more difficult!

VSP Practice Tip: when chipping, place an alignment stick down for your target line. Use another alignment stick to create a vertical line a few feet behind the ball and on the target line. Try to swing the club as close as possible to the vertical line in the backswing! The farther you swing inside of the line, the harder it will be to create consistent contact!

Wrist hinge is a great way to help create the vertical swing plane you want, but not always necessary. Phil Mickelson, along with many other professional golfers, have implored a high amount of wrist hinge in their chipping, but examples like Jason Day and Steve Stricker are on the opposite end of the hinge spectrum. If you are swinging a steep vertical swing plane, moving your weight forward during the motion (read last month’s article), and still having trouble with contact, you may need to add or subtract hinge! If your contact tends to be ground first, try adding more hinge to get the club higher off the ground Conversely, if your contact is thin or your divot is too far in front of the ball towards the target, try reducing the hinge There is no one perfect recipe to give every golfer, but each golfer can find their perfect recipe! Just remember, hinging means moving the shaft up and down between your forearms, not rolling your arms or hands!

For more information or questions regarding swing changes, contact Andrew (andrew@bccgolf.org) or (615) 373-2552 Ext. 502.

Summer Junior Golf Recap

A heartfelt “thank you” to all members, junior golfers, and staff!

School is back in session this month, and the BCC Junior Golf summer is almost over! We had 134 participants over three summer camps, the PGA Junior League, Up to Par Private Schools, the 2 Annual Junior Member-Guest, and “The Intensive” Golf School. New friendships were created, old friendships were strengthened, and lasting memories were instilled in our junior golfers! I would like to say, “thank you” to everyone involved in the BCC Junior Golf Program, and that includes each and every person associated with Brentwood Country Club! From the junior golfers and their parents, who showed out for registration to fill every junior event we offered, to the members who put up with disturbances to the practice facility and tee time sheet, and our staff of instructors, the golf course and grounds maintenance crews, the kitchen and clubhouse staff, and anyone I have not mentioned! You make it possible to spread the joy and passion of golf to our youngest golfers! nd

We have one more summer junior golf event. On Saturday, August 16, the PGA Junior League will wrap-up the season with the “End of Season” Celebration! The tee sheet will be blocked beginning at 2:00 PM that day, and we will pair everyone up and send them out for two hours of on-course play. After play, we will meet at the pool for ice cream, and it may turn into a PGA Junior League pool party!

As our attention turns to the fall, we want to introduce the Fall Clinic semester for those looking to continue practicing, learning, and improving their game! The Fall Clinics will be held on Monday evenings, from 4:30-5:30 PM, and 5:30-6:30 PM, beginning Monday, September 8. Registration will begin Sunday, August 10 on Golf Genius More information will be provided closer to the registration date August Junior Golf Events:

*These events may cause disruptions to parts of the practice facilities and/or tee time availability*

-Sunday, August 10 – Fall Clinic Registration Begins (5:00 PM)

Hi everyone, my name is Kevin Gormley and I am from Knoxville, TN. I’ve lived in Nashville for almost 2 years and work in outside builder sales for LG, where I get to collaborate with homebuilders and developers across the state. Outside of work, I’m an avid golfer who also enjoys spending time on the lake, following the stock market, and cheering on Tennessee football. I love spending quality time with my family and friends, and I’m a proud member of Crosspoint Church. I’m really looking forward to being part of this community and meeting everyone here at the club.
