Golf News

The golf environment at BCC is alive and well! May was a great month with warmer temperatures and the return of some of our biggest tournaments including the Memorial Day Scramble. We had 151 golfers competing in a new format with two teams of four playing alongside each other. The PGA Stroke Play event was another full field with many members excited to take on the challenges that our new golf course presents in an individual stroke play format. Thanks to the efforts of Brad Erickson and the entire maintenance team, the golf course is rounding into shape incredibly well. The fairways are full and lush. The greens are getting faster each week. The new bunkers continue to frame each hole very well and the sand within them is starting to settle in nicely. We turn now to Member Guest season starting with the Seniors on June 5th and 6th. The Men's Member Guest, aka "The Stakes" will take place June 19-22. This is the 50th annual and is lining up to be an incredible event. Junior golf continues to boom and we are looking forward to summer camps and PGA Jr. League matches which are right around the corner. From all of us in the Golf Shop, we want to wish a Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there.

JUNE-ior Golf!

PGA Junior League, Camp 1 and Camp 2, and Tournament Series!

The PGA Junior League began in May with a mix of skill and on-course practices! The Travel Team begins the match season this month, with the first match at home on Tuesday, June 4. All home matches will begin at 5:00 PM, so the tee sheet will be “blocked” beginning at 3:00 PM on match days. All play will resume at 5:10 PM on hole 10. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understanding as we provide our juniors with more on-course opportunities than ever before!

Summer Camp 1 and 2 are happening this month, June 10-14 and 24-28, respectively. The camps begin at 1:00 PM and end at 4:00 PM. The camps will incur slight disturbances to some of the practice facilities each day. We will do our best to keep it to a minimum. Both camps are currently full with several people on the wait list. If your child is signed up, and your plans have changed, please let us know!

The Junior Golf Association at Brentwood Country Club is where the future of golf is being developed. The clinics, camps, and other activities offered by the JGA are designed to build and strengthen physical and mental golf skills. The Tournament Series will offer a mix of individual, team, competitive, and fun formats to help each junior see how their game stacks up to the competition. To showcase our juniors’ hard work, the JGA will host the following

* All junior golfers are strongly encouraged to establish a GHIN handicap

* Elementary and Middle School junior golfers do not need a handicap for the applicable events

* All other participants must have a valid GHIN handicap to compete in an event

Cause and Effect of the Loop

The epidemic plaguing many golfers!

As a self-proclaimed golf nerd, I try to watch as many swings as I can get my eyes on! From top ranked professionals, to high-handicapped amateurs, they are all important to me. Every time I watch a swing, I can learn something. Over time, I have noticed a trend among the majority of club golfers; especially in most high-handicapped players. The trend is an inside, up, and over loop, or pattern, with the club head that most people call “ over the top”. But swinging over the top is the effect, not the cause, of the problem at hand.

Many times, the “ over the top” loop is a byproduct of swinging the club too far inside during the initial part of the backswing, followed by a lifting of the club (which usually gets across the line at the top), then a pulling down and out on the handle to begin the downswing. The pictures below show this pattern:

Starting from the left, we can see the club head get inside the hands during the initial takeaway. This is considered under the plane and inside the hands. From this position, we will almost always see the player lift the arms and shaft to get the club to the top of the backswing, significantly reducing turn. These movements encourage a pulling out and down of the club to start the downswing. So the club goes under the plane, crosses the plane line, and then is pulled over the plane on the way down to impact. From this viewpoint, as you track the club head during this swing, it creates a clockwise loop To the player, it will be counterclockwise

Although there are always statistical outliers, I struggle to find many professional golfers that exhibit this movement during the swing But I find many amateurs that exhibit this same pattern Here are the two main reasons this movement is less desirable, in my opinion:

Contact issues – the downward and outward pulling on the club to start the downswing puts the shaft in a very steep position, encouraging more right tilt before impact, moving the low point back. Inefficiency – the contact associated with this pattern is a glancing blow, decreasing power

If you feel like you have a power drain in your swing, can only hit pulls and fades, and struggle with consistent contact, you may have built this pattern into your golf swing. If you hit your irons “o.k.” and struggle mightily with a driver, chances are this loop is in your golf swing. The first step is to identify the pattern. I recommend booking a lesson with a BCC professional. With the help of video technology, we can put a trained eye to your swing. Once you narrow down the main issue, the next step is to establish a plan to fix the issue. Lastly, the hardest job as a student is to keep fighting through the change. It will not always be easy, you may struggle for a little while to get it “right”, but the reward at the end will prove its worth!

If you want to learn more about the “loop”, contact Andrew (andrew@bccgolf.org), or book a lesson with one of our many knowledgeable PGA professionals! See you on the range,

Golf Course Maintenance

BCC Members, Summer is officially here and it's exciting to see the golf course mature with more warm weather. May was certainly a wet one and, despite the rainfall and flooding, the course really started to fill in. More importantly, the new drainage and infrastructure really started to prove it's worth by taking the water perfectly, which allowed us to continue to maintain and mow despite the very many wet days. The warranty work from Southeastern Golf was slowed down due to weather, but we continue to work on collars and address wet and low areas as quickly as possible. Our staff continues to groom and refine areas of the course, and we are pleased so far with the health and playability of the greens. I've noticed an increased usage in the green divot mix that we purchase, so a thank you is in order for the continued care of filling divots and fixing ball marks. Diligence goes a long way in the look and presentation of our new golf course. I hope you all enjoy your summer and we look forward to seeing you on the golf course.

We look forward to seeing you on the links.
