Message from Our President by Steven Sherman

The Cost of Doing Business The synagogue, like any institution, needs to be properly maintained. Recently, we have put in place a maintenance program for the HVAC system and repaired/replaced equipment, we have replaced the old thermostats with new programmable ones (saving on energy costs), we conducted an energy audit with EPB, installed new security lights in the parking lot, had the carpets and chairs professionally cleaned, and cleaned out the back storage room by the kitchen, These are just a few of the maintenance issues that have been recently addressed. This brings me to the Chattanooga Times Free Press. While I was perusing the April 5, 2015 Sunday edition I came across an article in the back of the business section entitled: “The opportunity of not managing strategically.” The article was written by Allen Hovious, President of LBMC Planning Services, located in Tennessee. Mr. Hovious wrote that when he is contacted about advising a company on their profitability and operations one of the first questions he asks is: “Does your roof leak?” I was intrigued and read on. Mr. Hovious explained that: “If your roof leaks, you give the appearance of not caring for your two most important assets: Your people and your machinery. People can slip and hurt themselves. Water damage can rust your machinery.” I thought about this statement and how it applies to B’nai Zion. The next time you visit the synagogue take a few minutes and look at the outside walls. You will see the cracks that are exposing our building to the outside elements and causing continued damage to our facility. The problem has persisted for many years and has not yet been properly addressed. The other week Rabbi Tendler brought me behind the curtain on the stage in the social hall. There she pointed out the crumbling cement blocks and pieces of cement

which had fallen onto the rear of the stage. This is just one example of the several that exist. The cracks are exposing the building to the outside elements which increases our utility bills, damages our texts and Torahs from the humidity, and lets in rodents and other pests, not to mention the potential safety hazard of the problem. We know from a previous study conducted several years ago that the problem is structural; the foundation needs better footings or underpinnings. Some of the questions that have been raised are: Does the congregation want to pay for another engineering study to determine if the situation causing the cracking of the walls has stopped or not? If the situation has not stabilized, what needs to be done to rectify the problem(s) and repair the damage? How do we fund the fix and the repairs? A decision was made to include the future of the building in our Strategic Plan. In the coming weeks there will be a Strategic Planning Meeting to address the building. If you have thoughts, ideas, suggestions, or comments on how you as a member believe this problem can best be remedied, please contact me, Jordan Parker or Robert Siskin with your recommendations. Mr. Horvis wrote: “Maintenance was an investment that did not occur properly” in the quilling factory where he was employed. “And although the problem was fixed, it could have been avoided and the company would have been that much further ahead,” financially. As a congregation we can no longer avoid taking some action without the building being further damaged resulting in an even greater increase in the costs to repair it. We need to decide as a congregation how best to proceed and in the final analysis if the costs involved exceed our means as a congregation. Our building is leaking, and more than your thumbs are needed to help plug the dike.

Message from Our Rabbi by Rabbi Susan Tendler

Change is never easy; we will always have gratitude To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven. -Ecclesiastes 3 (and the Byrds) Each and every one of our festivals comes to remind us of both the bitter and the sweet. On each we celebrate and we remember. We bring family together and we mourn those no longer present. We mark another year gone by. We measure our growth and consider our future, our path and our direction. On Purim we read the Book of Esther and strive to emerge from our shell. On Passover, we read Shir HaShirim (the Song of Songs) and find the audacity to move forward with hope and anticipation. Come around to Shavuot, we take the time to mark our growth as Ruth reminds us of our harvest, our commitment, and our core values-- God, family, and Israel. As we tu rn then to S u kko t, Ko hele t (Ecclesiastes) boldly reminds us that nothing new is under the sun as well as there is a time for everything. Our growth as a synagogue reflects this tension… our growth both wonderful and exciting is also bittersweet. As we transform in so many beautiful and smart ways, we know that change is never easy. At our last board meeting, the board decided to move away from a paper bulletin and to find ways to announce our going-ons and milestones in perhaps more effective and alternative avenues. While the BZ Voice is only a small part of what Deborah Wint does, this decision also means saying goodbye to DW. Most of you know even more than I, DW’s love and dedication to BZ over the past 15 years. She taught herself H eb rew, cares deeply for our

community and is nothing short of professional. Brilliant, creative, purposeful, thoughtful, timely, reliable, a talented writer with a wonderful sense of humor and a good eye, made Deborah such a gem for our synagogue and our community. She brought national attention our way, twice receiving a Solomon Schechter award of excellence—twice for our website in 2000 and 2002, and once for our bulletin in 2004. And yet, Deborah does so much more for the synagogue of which few of us are even aware from the yarzeit lists and letters to the High Holiday mailing, the yizkor books, organizing Interfaith Shabbat from the inside, weekly acknowledgements of individuals’ milestones. Even these responsibilities only touch the surface of what she has and does accomplish. So many of you have fond memories that make you smile, that shaped you in some way and uplifted you at some point. Lester says that no matter what happened, he can always count on her for a pleasant, upbeat attitude. Jason remembers with affection a particular “Deborahism” -the huge wine goblet planted on her desk that she would sip water from each day perhaps bringing even more attention to the two camels that sat in a place of honor on her desk that Susan Leininger remembers with a smile. Please help us honor DW for her years of dedication and dynamism. By sending us your memories (office@bzcongregation.com) and pictures of Deborah. We will be collecting your fond recollections and creating a book of tribute to present to her. Thank you Deborah for all you have done, all you have given.

Message from Our Director of Congregational Learning by Jason Cathcart

Another BSI Year Flies by! Our school year at BSI this year has flown by, as usual. It has been a whirlwind of Jewish learning, fun in the classroom and memories for all. We had some wonderful new moments in our school year this year and I would like to mention some of them here as I thank a few people. Thank you to our teaching staff: Seth Balser, David Fairchild, Noa Hadad, Rachel Sadowitz , Rebecca Sadowitz and Rabbi Tendler. I couldn’t ask for a more hard working and caring group of educators. Each teacher helped to bring a creative twist into the educational program that make us all so proud. Thank you for you dedication. Rob Cowan and our Education committee has done an excellent job of advocating for the youth of our congregation. This group of people cares deeply about what and how our children are learning at B’nai Zion. Thank you for all that you do. Thank you to our B'nai Zion office team: Deborah Wint, Marcia Menuskin, Susan Matzkin, Susan Leininger, Mable Willingham, Lester Votava. From the lights to the heat, the computers to the food, the head to the heart: this is a dedicated group of individuals that make up a fantastic team. I am fortunate to work with you all and I truly appreciate your help. Our final thank you goes out to our students. Without you, Beit Sefer Ivri would not be possible. I am proud of all the learning you have done this year and look forward to seeing you grow as members of the Jewish people. I’m looking forward to seeing all our students, parents and extended BSI family on May 13th for our End of the Year Dinner and Program. It will be filled with food and fun!

BZ Family A special thank you to Sylvia Wygoda who generously presented us with an authentic badge from the Holocaust along with a Holocaust themed tzedakah pushkie. Many thanks to all who volunteered in coordination with the Mens' Club, helping to kasher the kitchen and prepare us for Passover. To Susan Matzkin, Amy Snetman and Fern Shire who helped set tables for seder!
