Message from Our President by Steven Sherman

“He Should Have Taken More Time” A story is told about a Rabbi and village’s tailor. The Rabbi had ordered a new pair of trousers made and wanted the pants finished before the Passover holiday. The story goes like this: “The Rabbi ordered a pair of pants for the Passover holidays from the village tailor. The tailor, who was very reliable, took a long time finishing the job. The Rabbi was afraid that he would not have the garment ready for the holidays. On the day before Passover the tailor came running all out of breath to deliver the pants. The Rabbi examined his new garment with a critical eye. ‘Thank you for bringing my pants on time,’ he said. ‘But tell me, my friend, if it took Hashem only six days to create our vast and complicated world, why did it have to take you six weeks to make this simple pair of pants?’ ‘But Rabbi!’ murmured the tailor triumphantly, ‘Just look at the mess the Lord made, and then look at this beautiful pair of pants!’ I know there are many of you, if not all, who would take a certain amount of umbrage in the statement that Hashem made a mess of this world. And I would agree, for man was given the power by G-d to make a choice between performing good deeds (mitzvoth) or not. We have just finished celebrating the holiday of Purim, the story of how Haman who wanted to destroy the Jewish people of Persia. We are now about to recall the story of Passover, how we were once slaves in Egypt under Pharaoh. We easily recall the horrors of the Inquisition, the Holocaust, and the enslavement of Soviet Jewry. All these horrific tragedies were perpetrated against the Jewish people and carried out by the hand of man. The power to do good or evil is self-evident. It is said that Hashem works in mysterious ways; but perhaps not as quickly as we would like. The story of Passover tells us about the Exodus, how we were freed by the hand of G-d, and eventually given the Ten Commandments and the Torah, laws to live by. The Jewish people survived the horrors of the Inquisition, the Holocaust, and enslavement in the former Soviet Union. We bear witness to the rebirth of the modern State of Israel Passover is a time when we gather around the Seder table with friends, family and maybe strangers in our midst to remember that we were once slaves in Egypt, but now we are free. Unfortunately, there are still many others who yearn for their own inalienable right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and freedom of religion. It is not Hashem who made a mess of the world, but individual men and women who choose the evil of their ways. So, let’s not forget that Hashem has empowered each individual with the ability to choose to perform mitzvoth or to do evil, and if we choose rightly we can make the world a better place. Chag sameach, Happy Passover!

Message from Our Rabbi by Rabbi Susan Tendler

“And you shall tell it to your son on that day, saying, 'Because of this God did for us when He took me out of Egypt.'" (Exodus 13:8) This most celebrated of all rituals by American Shabbat, essentially we would be saying that Jews, the seder remains one of the most Shabbat is over and we have moved on to the next beloved evenings of the year and in people’s day. Moreover, we are challenged this year as well as memories. In fact, when I ask Jewish adults next, since we cannot cook on Shabbat nor begin what their favorite Jewish holiday is or to share a favorite childhood preparing for after Shabbat on Shabbat as that in holiday memory, the answer almost always revolves around our festival and of itself reduces our enjoyment of Shabbat. All of freedom. this said, traditionally speaking this would have us Perhaps the secret of Passover’s popularity quite simply is the sitting down for seder at 8:43 at night. home-centeredness of the holiday, spending quality family time at a meal While I was certain that those of you in town seeped in ritual. Even those who do not have a “traditional” seder tend over Spring Break wouldn’t mind eating until 10 to have their own rituals or family stories surrounding the evening. And o’clock at night (joking), I knew that I had to figure for families unaccustomed to celebrating with family on a weekly basis, something else out. That is when I remembered this type of quality family ritual becomes all the more essential and that we are marking the shmita year (every 7 years appreciated. we allow the land to lay fallow). Somehow that idea I suspect, however, that as much as I believe the above is true, of letting go providing us with other opportunities other aspects combine to create such a time-honored and treasured provided me with the key to having a “seder” ritual. The key lies in the nature of the seder (order) itself. In order to without it being a seder. This year we will eat the fulfill the mitzvah of telling the story of the Exodus from Egypt, the third meal of Shabbat (seudat shlishit) in which we rabbis created an unbelievable pedagogic lesson involving all the senses traditionally tell stories and sing songs anyway. We and multiple intelligences. The Haggadah (literally, "telling") attracts will take advantage of this opportunity to those who learn from narrative and/or audit-orally. Hide-and seek and incorporate traditional aspects of a seder, and we question and answer appeals to those who learn through games and will have in many ways a traditional meal and then, discovery. Songs make things for those who are musical, easier to as Shabbat ends we will have Havdalah, set our remember and enjoyable. The symbols of the seder table provide tactile tables and then end with about a 10 minute seder and multi-sensory meaning and levels of understanding enabling us to that meets all of the requirements (although truth literally taste the bitterness of slavery and feel our ancestors’ tears. For be told it might take 15 minutes). The evening will children who do not even know what mortar is, they see the color in the feel traditional and yet fresh, letting go for shmita thick haroset mixture. What other night are we not only allowed to, but and hopefully, like the shmita year, will therefore encouraged to bring a pillow to our table? On this night we really relax enable us to raise others and be raised to even as we enjoy our meal and our company as we all recline as the richest greater heights! and most free individuals in the world! Message from Our Director of Congregational Learning April BSI at a Glance

by Jason Cathcart

Take the Matzah Challenge Matzah and Haroset and Maror, Oh my! It’s time for Pesach. While flipping through a book on my self recently, I was reminded of the Matzah challenge presented by author Joel Lurie Grishaver in his book “40 Things You Can Do to Save the Jewish People”. We’ve all had those moments during Peasch. The moment when you are relaxing and chatting away with friends or colleagues and instinctively take a snack and pop it in your mouth. Seconds later it hits you: What did I just eat? It’s Pesach!!! I remember one of my failing Passover moments like it was yesterday. I was in second grade and we were having a special program about butter and how it is made. We were all in awe of this man who was using an electric butter churn to show us how he made butter on the farm he owned. I was so caught up in the fascinating moment, when the teacher passed around crackers with a little taste of butter, I took one and enjoyed eating it. I could taste it’s delicious flavor and I swallowed the wafer and fresh butter. Then it hit me: What have I done! I was so upset I don’t know if I ever told my parents. That day I made a promise to myself that I would do my best to stay away from chametz during Pesach while still living my life. That’s what the Matzah challenge is all about: finding a way to fit our wonderful Jewish traditions into our everyday lives. It gives you a sense of Jewish accomplishment. If you manage to get through a whole week (I know it’s really 8 days, I’m just rounding it down) of going to ordinary places you need to go and doing all the things you need to do without allowing chametz to pass your lips, you’ve proved that ordinary life and being a Jew can go together. It’s the great annual triumph of Judaism and life working together. Hag Kasher v’Sameach! (A happy and Kosher holiday)
