Message from Our President

Rabbi Susan Tendler rabbi@bzcongregation.com

Recently I presented a lecture at a local university on the topic of “Ethics in the Intelligence Field.” The topic of “Ethics” is one that is an ongoing dilemma for every organization and for those who are part of it. I began my lecture with a definition: Ethics – the rightness or wrongness of actions and the goodness or badness of motives and ends (Random House Webster’s Dictionary, 1995). There are many such definitions of ethics, but I chose this one for its direct simplicity. As I was conducting my research for this particular lecture, I happened upon the following from a Jewish perspective: “What conscience approves or disapproves is given recognition because the normal human personality has within it the capacity for distinguishing right from wrong.” (Understanding Jewish Theology by Jack Neuser, v1973). Ethics has a particular urgency in religious organizations for how it is managed, operated, and eventually viewed is usually done through the prism of its governing ethical precepts. According to Kenneth Blanchard and Norman Vincent Peale, authors of The Power of Ethical Management, 1998, there are three questions one should ask whenever faced with an ethical dilemma: 1. Is it legal? In other words, will you be violating any criminal laws, civil laws or company/government policies by engaging in this activity? 2. Is it balanced? Is it fair to all parties concerned both in the short-term as well as the long-term. Is this a winwin situation for those directly as well as indirectly involved? 3. Is it right? Most of us know the difference between right and wrong. How does your decision make you feel about yourself? Are you proud of yourself for making this decision? Would you like others to know you made the decision you did? Hans Morgenthau, a renowned but departed political scientist whose works are still studied, wrote that there are certain moral (ethical) precepts that statesmen and diplomats ought to follow. I borrowed some of these precepts and list them as a guide:

Updating B’nai Zion’s Governing Policies by Steven Sherman

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Keeping promises; Trust in the other’s word; Fair dealing; Respect for [the]…law; and Protection of minorities and human rights. There are certain causes of poor ethical choices: 1. Convenience: Human nature often leads people to choose the easy route over the right route; 2. Winning: The concept that winning at all costs is everything; 3. Relativism: Rationalize almost any act as right in a given situation, especially when Convenience and Winning have already taken precedence. Can ethics and success be reconciled? In “The Hidden Costs of Unethical Behavior,” (Josephson Institute of Ethics, 2004) the downside of unethical behavior from the perspective of a business, and I would like to include an organization, could result in any or all of the following: 1. A decrease in company sales and stock prices; 2. A decrease in productivity, both organizational and personal; 3. A decrease in efficiency; 4. A decrease in communication and trust; 5. A decrease in recruiting and retention; 6. An increase in the risk from scandal; 7. An increase in employee misconduct and fraud; and 8. An increase in damaging and sabotaging behavior. One of my goals as President of B’nai Zion is to maintain the highest level of ethical behavior in our synagogue. To help accomplish this goal, in the coming months the Board of Trustees will be instituting new written policies governing B’nai Zion’s personnel and volunteer staff; use of B’nai Zion’s social media; new housekeeping policies; and updating B’nai Zion’s Employee Handbook, to name just a few of the areas that will be examined. As these reviews move forward, I will bring updates to the attention of the Congregation concerning the progress being made as greater clarity is brought to B’nai Zion’s governing policies.

Message from Our Rabbi Building Bridges by Rabbi Susan Tendler A few months ago, Ross and I crossed the h i s t o r i c Edmund Pettus Bridge in S e l m a , Alabama; we were struck by the realization that only 50 years ago, those seeking equality and rights as Americans, were met with violence and government resistance. As we embark upon the 50 th anniversary of these historic marches this March, and recognize the civil unrest that continues to besiege our mighty nation, we would like to focus on the theme of “Building Bridges” and come together for an evening of fellowship in which we build bridges of our own. We are hoping to make strides towards this lofty goal through song and words directed towards building bridges through our faith communities, within our local community, or on a larger scale. As a city that boasts bridges, and with so many bridges to strengthen, and others in needing to be built, we are dedicating this year’s Interfaith Shabbat to this theme. I don’t need to tell you that for three decades, this evening has been one of B’nai Zion Congregation’s most

anticipated events of the year, bringing together families and individuals from across the community at large to pray together, “break bread” together, share with one another as we enjoy fellowship and learn from one another. This evening gives us the chance to invite guests of our own or to be matched with others—or even a little of both. As well, it provides us the opportunity to show off and share our beautiful and rich traditions, to feel proud of our community and express our pride in an impactful way. The evening, this year, will begin at 5:45pm with the traditional service beginning promptly at 6pm. After services, we will adjourn to the social hall for a delicious, traditional Shabbat dinner and meaningful conversation and fellowship amongst all of those in attendance, before we metaphorically build bridges with our official program of the evening. We have several speakers lined up to help us consider this theme from various angles. As well we have students from St. Nicholas who will help us consider the theme through uplifting song. It should truly be an evening to remember! We look forward to making this year’s dream a reality. Please join us in sponsorship and in attendance!

MARCH 1-3 Annual AIPAC Policy Conference Join Rabbi Tendler and our B’nai Zion delegation in Washington, D.C., Sunday-Tuesday, March 1-3, 2015, for the annual AIPAC Policy Conference, the largest gathering of the pro-Israel movement. TEN People from our community are attending! Are you?

Message from Our Director of Congregational Learning February BSI at a Glance

by Jason Cathcart

It’s that time of year again!

Mishloach Manot—Sending food gifts to friends and family—is one of the four Mitzvot performed on Purim. It is a heartfelt way to emphasize the Jewish unity that lies at the core of the Purim holiday... and to create meaningful connections within our own community at the same time. For the SIXTH YEAR in a row, BSI is selling Mishloach Manot baskets as a fundraiser for the school. For just $4.00 per recipient, you can participate in the sending of a beautiful gift basket to anyone in our congregation. Through the help of our friends at HappyPurim.com it is an easy process. If you have any questions or need another copy of your personal log-in code, please contact Jason Cathcart at 894.8900 x103 or Jason@bzcongregation.com NDS BZ FRIE
