Message from Our President

Rabbi Susan Tendler rabbi@bzcongregation.com

It is the start of a New Year, and while it is not the Jewish New Year, it is a start of a New Year in B’nai Zion's front office. There is a changing of the guard as new volunteers and professional staff assumes the responsibilities of managing the operations of B’nai Zion. Long-time office manager Marcia Menuskin is retiring from her position in the B’nai Zion front office at the end of December 2014. Marcia has contributed an enormous amount of her energy and time, in both her professional capacity and through her spirit of volunteerism, as she helped B’nai Zion achieve its mission. Whether it was working in the front office, volunteering on the Culinary Committee, or as Sisterhood President, you could always find Marcia hard at work in any and all of these areas. Now with her pending retirement close at hand, we welcome Susan Matzkin to continue in Marcia’s footsteps. Joyce Thomas, a long-time volunteer at B'nai Zion, has moved on, too. Joyce ensured that information flowed within the office and outwards to B’nai Zion’s membership. Her knowledge and work on the B’nai Zion Voice and minyan list was done in a professional manner and with an appreciation for the importance of both. As I noted in my Kol Nidre message, B’nai Zion is changing, and new challenges await the congregation. There are new volunteers who have stepped forward to assist in the front office. They have picked-up where committed volunteers like Joyce Thomas have left their mark. Gail Susman and Faith Goldberg are two of these individuals. David Fairchild and Fern Shire have taken on the responsibility for production of the BZ Voice in conjunction with the Communications and Media Committee, which they co-chair. Special thanks to Issi Goldberg our volunteer baker extraordinaire and master chef.

Start of A New Year

Other volunteers accepting the challenge are Rachel Privet and Laura Israel. They now co-chair the Cemetery Committe. Jay Menuskin has begun his transition off this committee and is relinquishing his duties to a younger generation of committed BZ members. There are volunteers like Isaac Barukh, Lester Votava, Mark Shapiro, John Lewis, and Joe Kodsi who willingly accepted a request to oversee the repairs, maintenance, and improvements to the synagogue. We can, however, use more volunteer help on this committee. Jordan Parker has done a marvelous job along with Fern Shire on bringing fund raising events and programming to new heights. The recent Gabbaim's dinner and recognition come directly to mind. On December 6, 2014, we honored several Gabbim: Reuben Dubrow, Howard Gropper, Lester Votava, Lester Cohen, and Joel Susman who assist in the Torah reading during Shabbat and holiday services. Scott Israel, who is instrumental in making sure BZ's financials are in order and within budget, constantly makes an invaluable contribution. Upon my request, several congregants volunteered their time and professional Human Resources' experience to review the staffing requirements of B’nai Zion. This included: reviewing/identifying needed staffing positions; writing new job descriptions for front office staff and volunteer positions; and, creating an organizational flow chart. There are many more volunteers, sung and un-sung, who give of their time and energy every day to ensuring that B’nai Zion continues to thrive l'dor va’dor – generation to generation. These individuals and their families have committed themselves to continue the tradition of making B’nai Zion a warm and welcoming congregation. As I mentioned in the beginning of my message, it’s a New Year for B’nai Zion. The synagogue needs your help (Continued next page)

Message from Our Rabbi by Rabbi Susan Tendler

Fueling our Passion On a recent mission to Israel, an AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) delegate was walking through the Israel Museum wearing his lanyard and badge. Suddenly, he sensed that the person next to him was looking at him. Glancing over he saw there was an elderly woman, easily in her 80’s. She tapped him on the arm, and with a heavy accent, said “Are you from AIPAC?” He said he was. He reported that in broken English she looked him in the eyes and said, “Please. Please tell them. Please tell them we are not bad. Be strong. You are so important. So important for Israel. Do not stop what you are doing. Please.” The man was blown away. He promised her we would work hard to be strong and that we would not stop. Often in the Jewish community we think of AIPAC or even Israel for that matter and we think of Jews. The truth is, however, that a growing number of constituents who fervently support Israel and AIPAC are from the non-Jewish community. In fact, recently as I was leaving a Weight Watchers meeting, one of my fellow members turned to me and said, “chag sameach” is that right? That is what I remember us saying when we would be in Israel. And a neighbor frequently, proudly greets us in Hebrew, having been to Israel numerous times and considers herself an avid supporter. As well, Pastor Kevin Adams of Olivet Baptist Church downtown shared with me earlier this year how he had gone to Israel with AIPAC and it was a life-changing experience. The highlight for him was Shabbat dinner with a family in Jerusalem. While I am looking forward to having Pastor Adams and his family as guests in our home for Shabbat dinner, we also realized that we will also both, be sojourning to Washington D.C. this March for the AIPAC Policy Conference.

There too, I recall being pleasantly surprised and slightly overwhelmed by what it is that happens. I knew that top politicians often make a showing—the Vice President or President of the United States, the Prime Minister of Israel, and planned on learning more in -depth about the politics. Once there, I realized how much more happens! The convention is attended by more than 14,000 pro-Israel Americans, more than two-thirds of Congress, more than 2,200 students, more than 250 synagogue delegations as well as Jews, Christians, African Americans and Latinos from all 50 states. And the politics are just the tip of the iceberg with opportunities to meet with ambassadors, authors, the developers of Iron Dome, inspiring individuals who are making a difference in the global world, not just the US and Israel. People from all over, various religious, cultural, and political backgrounds come together to be inspired and make a difference. At B’nai Zion we celebrate Interfaith Shabbat on a local level each year, AIPAC conference builds on those sentiments of unity and understanding and puts them into action. Jews and non-Jews, Democrats and Republicans representing every state and every age (high school and beyond) bring their passion with them to Washington D.C. and light up our nation’s capital. And our local leaders are in key positions to make significant impact on the United States government and history. Whether you plan to join our delegation (so far 10 of us) in D.C. this year or consider it for a future year, or even align yourself politically on a different place when it comes to Israel, I invite you and hope you will join us January 17 at B’nai Zion to be inspired by AIPAC Shabbat as we gain insight from some of our Christian neighbors about what fuels their passion for Israel and for AIPAC.

B’nai Zion AIPAC Shabbat Shabbat morning, Jan. 17: 9:45 a.m.

Shabbat services followed by Kiddush luncheon and a conversaƟon focused on Israel.

MARCH 1-3 Annual AIPAC Policy Conference Join Rabbi Tendler and our B’nai Zion delegation in Washington, D.C., Sunday-Tuesday, March 1-3, 2015, for the annual AIPAC Policy Conference, the largest gathering of the pro-Israel movement. TEN People from our community are attending! Are you?

Message from Our President, continued and your spirit of volunteerism. If you would like to be part of the continuing success story of B’nai Zion, please volunteer your time and talent. Contact me, speak to one of your Committee Chairs or any Board Member, or contact the front office. There is a tremendous need for all types of volunteer help from assisting in the kitchen to introducing new technologies, and you can be assured you will be gainfully and meaningfully employed. Happy New Year to everyone!

Message from Our Director of Congregational Learning January BSI at a Glance

by Jason Cathcart

How I spent my Winter Vacation As I sit here to write this month’s article I’m about to adventure out to one of my favorite Jewish events in the world: USY International Convention. This year the convention is in Atlanta and I’ve been invited to be a member of the teaching faculty, guide sessions on leadership development and be a member of the Executive Staff. Almost 900 USY’ers and staff will take over the Omni Hotel at the CNN Plaza in downtown Atlanta. Personally, I’ve travelled to International Convention 3 times as a USY’er and 7 times as a staff member. Each experience is different and exciting in it’s own regard. This year, the entire convention body will be learning about Ve’ahavta L’reyacha Kamocha/Love another as yourself. We’ll study the importance of helping others and choosing kindness. As part of the experiential part of the program, the entire convention body will study and learn from people on the ground who help to make the Atlanta community a better place through social action and change. The USY’ers will also participate in service projects around Atlanta and visit the memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We’ll even get a chance to learn from Rev. Graham Williams, the pastor at the Ebenezer Baptist Church. As if that wasn’t enough, there will be Israeli programs, spiritual and creative davening experiences, chances to sightsee in Downtown Atlanta, hear from inspiring speakers, a concert by Joshua Nelson (the Prince of Kosher Gospel) and a whole lot of ruach. I feel very fortunate to be able to spend 5 days with the future leaders of our movement and of North American Jewry. I look forward to returning with my head and my heart filled with stories and songs of the experience.

Rebecca Grace Dzik will become a Bat Mitzvah at B’nai Zion Congregation on Saturday, January 31, 2015 (this is also her 13th birthday!) Rebecca is the daughter of Michael Dzik. Her older sister is Rachel, and Rebecca often refers to herself as the Sister of Allie, a four-year-old mutt who’s stolen both her heart and her pillow. Rebecca’s grandparents are Fran and Joe Dzik of Chattanooga, Gail and Joel Susman of Chattanooga, Michael Ulin of Chattanooga and Susan McDaniel of San Angelo, TX. Rebecca is a 7th grader at East Hamilton Middle School where she is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and sings in the choir. She devours books, preferably with a hint of SciFi, and truly loves Chattanooga, finding adventures and traditions throughout the city. Rebecca loves going to the aquarium, splitting her adoration between the butterflies and penguins. And nothing gets past her--an avid Geocacher, she and her Aunt Becky scavenge for hidden treasures. Through her parents’ and grandparents’ love of travel, Rebecca has been lucky enough to see many parts of the world and the beauty of America: London, Paris, Alaska, Florida, and even Las Vegas! Her favorite destination is Yellowstone National Park; if you’ve been, you understand why! Rebecca’s respect for Judaism and love of community come from earlychildhood education and spectacular summer camp experiences. At age two she started attending the community Sunday school (CJCRS); she went to Aleph Bet Children’s Center preschool; and she’s been a regular at B’nai Zion Hebrew School since Kindergarten. Rebecca has had many great teachers, but her favorite is Mr. David (Fairchild)—she recalls many lessons from him and shares them with the family at the perfect moment. Rebecca has been attending Camp Ramah Darom since “Taste;” that’s been five years of fun and friendships, and she is ready to go again this summer! Rebecca is also a member of B’nai Zion’s Kadima chapter. Rebecca has chosen to sponsor a disadvantaged at-risk child in Israel for her mitzvah project. Rebecca will be raising funds to assist this child in their Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutoring, the purchase of a tallit, Shabbat clothes and for a celebration at the completion of their Bar/Bat Mitzvah journey. The entire community is invited to celebrate with Rebecca for both her 13th Birthday and her Bat Mitzvah on January 31st at B’nai Zion Congregation at 9:30AM. A Kiddush luncheon will follow the service.

Ethan Ryan Goldblatt, known by his beloved mother as "Drop Dead Gorgeous", attends class at East Ridge High School where he regularly achieves honor roll status. Ethan's interests lie in theatre and music—-particularly "Wizard of Oz" and "Wicked", both of which he has seen a number of times, along with countless other productions on New York City's Broadway, the Chattanooga Theatre Centre, the Colonnade and many other stages large and small. He loves spending time with his favorite sidekick (his dad) and the rest of his family. Ethan regards everyone he meets as a friend, and serves as a reminder to each of us to love one another. Just love. Congratulations, Ethan! Ethan is the son of Shelton Goldblatt and the late Susan Goldblatt, z’’l, and the brother of Taylor Goldblatt.

Her husband, Jay, has also been a leader of B’nai Zion, most recently serving on the Eternal Care Trust Fund. The Menuskins plan to relocate to Memphis. Stay in touch, Marcia and Jay! BZ would like to welcome Susan Matzkin as our new office manager! Susan brings many years of management experience to her new role. Tzitzit/Tallit—Tekhelet Twice daily we read in the Shema: “God spoke to Moshe saying: Speak to the Children of Israel and say to them that they shall make themselves tsitsit on the corners of their garments throughout their generations. And they shall place upon the tsitsit of each corner a thread of tekhelet… And you shall see it and remember all of the commandments of God and you shall do them,”

For years, the special dye for tekhelet, was lost and about 30 years ago Rabbi Eliyahu Tavger became convinced that he had in fact discovered the authentic source. In preparation for this year’s World Wide Wrap, we will discuss tekhelet more in depth at our January 22nd lunch & learn and if you are interested in adding tekhelet to your tallit, to please be in touch with Jason Cathcart or Rabbi Tendler to order a set for you. 10 BZ Voice
