Message from Our President by Steven Sherman “NO ADMITTANCE” A story is told about the High Holy Days entitled “No Admittance.” One Yom Kippur, a ticket-taker at a Brooklyn house of worship was confronted by a Jewish man with no ticket who pleaded to be allowed to enter. “No ticket, no admission,” the guard said, firmly. “But I’ve got to see my partner, Sherman, in the fourth row,” insisted the man. “It’s urgent.” “For the last time,” said the guard, “I’m telling you, no ticket, no admission to this synagogue!” “But it’s a business matter,” persisted the man. “I’ll just be a minute I swear to you…just a minute.” “Well, if it’s a business matter,” said the guard, finally weakening, “I’ll let you in for a minute…But remember---NO PRAYING!” As I look back on this past year, I had absolutely no idea that I would become President of B’nai Zion; an honor I take seriously for the rich history of our synagogue is truly inspirational. While new to B’nai Zion, its past is something I wish to honor during my tenure. It is a pleasure being associated with the many talented and dedicated people at BZ, from Rabbi Tendler, Jason Cathcart, the industrious staff and volunteers, the Board of Directors, to all of you who work diligently to provide for the spiritual and educational experiences that are cherished by the members of B’nai Zion. As we are keenly aware, that privilege, however, comes with a commitment and obligation. Since B’nai Zion does not make a Kol Nidre appeal, as many synagogues do, I would be remiss if I did not ask you to consider how you can best contribute to the continued growth and ensure the future of our warm and welcoming synagogue. The synagogue has many needs, but with your continued financial support and spirit of volunteerism, we will all continue to enjoy the many religious services, programs, and educational opportunities the years ahead promise to offer. So, on behalf of B’nai Zion, I welcome everyone to come, participate and enjoy all that awaits you at BZ. And unlike the “No Admittance” ticket-taker above, BZ’s High Holy Days greeters will be there to warmly welcome you and your guests to our services. It is my hope that during the High Holy Days you have a memorable, religious, and spiritual experience, filled with prayer and personal reflection. L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatemt, “may you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.”

Men’s Club Changing of the Books for HHD Sunday, September 14 10:00 AM Come and assist in the important High Holy Day tradi,on of moving our siddurim and chumash out of the sanctuary and distribu,ng our machzorim to all of the seats.

Message from Our Rabbi by Rabbi Susan Tendler Recently I have found myself thinking about time. Proudly, I have just embarked upon the beginning of my third year as your rabbi. But more noticeably I realize that I literally have been looking up to many of our young teens who were, I am certain, a good bit shorter than I when I first arrived in town. Where does the time go and how does it all move so quickly I ponder? As I write this, I am in my grandparent’s apartment in Florida—I grew up coming here annually and by college more often. By the time I was pregnant with Hannah Sofia, I visited every 3 months. At sunset Ross and I walked along the beach just around the way, behind my Aunt Sophie’s (for whom Hannah Sofia received her middle name), the moon was robust and full, with the smiling face of the man in the moon gracing the evening sky. We paused to admire its beauty and realized that indeed today (the 15th of Av) is “love day” on the Jewish calendar—a week after the lowest point in our year. Here the moon is bright, promising, full of potential. The Hebrew word for month slipped into my consciousness—“hodesh” which connotes newness and renewal as well as time. It is not in the Hebrew month of Av alone that we have the ups and downs like the waxing and waning of the moon. Throughout our long history, our people have continuously encountered glorious heights followed by devastating lows and again, been raised up. Indeed, the Jewish people have been through it all and the moon serves as our beacon in the sky-- constant reminder that there is always renewal, that the future will indeed be brighter than the present and even the past. As it says in the blessings for the new moon, Kiddush levanah “…Those [the Jewish people] who are destined to renew themselves like it [the moon]. . ." When the world seems to be against us and everything goes wrong, as a people and as individuals, rather than lose faith, we bolster ourselves acknowledging that it is part of life, knowing we must find the strength from within to change/transform these lows into highs, the bad into good, finding new potential within. And the years just like the months, not only mark time, but share with us a deeper meaning underlying our people’s understanding of the world and the way it works. For a year--shanah, which binds together our collective new experiences, reminds us to review them as a collection of 11 (Hebrew months) or 12 (Gregorian calendar months) and realize the very potential within each and everyone of us for change inherent in the Hebrew word. You see, “shanah” not only means “year” but “repeat” and “change” as if to confirm that we should change year after year and throughout the year. As the months and the years pass us by, as individuals and as a people we innately seek to transform our journeys of time to opportunities for growth and renewal. Rather than let time pass us by, to utilize these benchmarks as vehicles for recognizing our accomplishments and simultaneously giving us faith for the future. With the high holidays upon us the message of the moon could not be more clear. As we sit in services, I pray that you will be open to transformation, to a new message, to a renewed faith and optimism open, to enabling your inner most essence to shine brightly the way the moon illumines the vast, dark sky. Wishing you and your families a renewed and transformative, radiant year full of good health, fond memories, and the promise of both peace and potential! Shanah tova (happy new year)!

Greeters, Readers, Children service leaders… Volunteers needed for High Holy Days!

Devin Kodsi Devin Alexander Kodsi will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah at B'nai Zion on September 13th. Devin is the son of Matthew and Angela Kodsi and brother to Jessica Kodsi. He is the grandson of Joseph and Marilee Kodsi of Signal Mountain and Jimmy and Alice Benson of Clayton, NC. Devin is a seventh grader at Signal Mountain Middle School, where he has received awards in Band and Science and is on the Cross Country Team. Devin is never satisfied with anything less than his best. This is reflected in his grades at school as well as in the quality of his work on Boy Scout projects and with the Chattanooga Boys Choir. Devin has completed more than half the Boy Scout ranks required to become an Eagle Scout. He has sung in the Chattanooga Boys Choir since 2010. He toured with the Choir in North Carolina this Summer and looks forward to visiting the Kentucky Derby, Indianapolis 500, and Chicago on tour next year. Devin attended Camp Ramah for two years, where he was able to strengthen both his understanding of what it means to be Jewish and his ability to read and to chant Hebrew. Like his father, Devin loves going to Walt Disney World where he spends most of his time looking for "hidden Mickeys". For his Bar Mitzvah project, Devin is planning to share his love of music with students throughout Hamilton county by taking donations to purchase music equipment for Hamilton County Schools. The Kodsi family looks forward to sharing the joy of Devin's Bar Mitzvah with family and friends, with a kiddush luncheon to follow.

Message from Our Director of Congregational Learning September BSI at a Glance

by Jason Cathcart

The Tastes of Rosh HaShanah As the High Holy Days draw near every year, there is one question that must always be asked: What should we eat? It seems like a trivial question, but it is rooted deep in our Jewish roots. Food is tied so closely to all of our holiday observances: the Pesach Seder, cheesecake during Shavuot, latkes for Chanukah, hamentaschen at Purim, the list could go on and on. Some of my fondest childhood memories are gathering with friends and family to bring in the new year. My mom is well known for her chopped liver and it doesn’t feel like Rosh HaShanah unless those flavors have graced my mouth. However, there are wonderful, more traditional foods that are mainstays at our holiday tables. We dip apples in honey and wish each other a sweet new year. This year, after you make the bracha, invite anyone around your table to share a wish that would help to deliver that sweet new year. You also could share some of the sweet things that have happened in the year that has just ended. Our round challah that we eat helps us remember that the year goes around in a circle. It’s never ending, we simply flow back into the cycle of our lives and continue celebrating. After blessing the challah would be an perfect time to share some of your favorite times of the year. It could be holidays, celebrations, family events, even something as simple as seeing the first blooms of the crepe myrtles. The pomegranate is not always found on our holiday table, but is an excellent one to include. The pomegranate is said to have 613 seeds that reminds us of the 613 mitzvot (commandments) in the Torah. As you eat the seeds of the pomegranate this year, think and share what mitzvot you might be interested fulfilling in your lives this year? How can you make Torah personal for your lives? By connecting actions to our eating rituals, we change the way we think about Judaism and our personal relationship with our faith. I wish you and your families a Shana Tova u’Metuka, a happy and sweet New Year! 4 BZ Voice

As the B'nai Zion Coordinator for Family Promise I am pleased to inform you of the next hosting. B'nai Zion along side of First Church of the Nazarene will be co-hosting the week of November 23, 2014. – Ruth Votava

Help the hungry in our area by donating food items which will be distributed to Family Promise, a recipient of the Chattanooga Food Bank. Operation Isaiah – the food drive of the Conservative Movement, is a meaningful way to demonstrate your concern for those in need throughout our greater community.

Donations can be brought and deposited in the bins located by each entrance of B’nai Zion.

NEILAH - We will continue the custom of having individual and family time to pray before the open ark during the cantor’s repetition of the Amidah. If you are interested in this opportunity to approach the ark please plan to arrive before services on Saturday evening and after the kedushah we will invite individuals and families to approach from the rabbis’ side of the bimah. We pray this ritual will be incredibly powerful.
