Message from Our President by Irv Ginsburg The past two years have passed in a blink. This will be my last monthly set of remarks. As each month comes up I have tried to be both clever and informative. You need to be the judge of whether I have been. I must say I have thoroughly enjoyed the task. We have seen so many positive changes in the past two years and that has made the task easier. I know that Steven Sherman, our new President, will feel the same way as both he and Carolyn have been active members of B'nai Zion. B'nai Zion is the place to be and that is noticeable in the smiles on your faces. The month of May has always been a source of joy for me. Having been married to a teacher, and father to three kids, our years were tied to school calendars. We would start “summer” planning around the gray days of February. Just thinking about fun in the sun got our taste buds flowing. As May rolled around we recounted all that had happened that year. Most of it made for good memories but some involved significant challenges. And so it is with synagogue life and in particular B'nai Zion. Your Board has been extremely judicious in managing the congregation’s finances and remains ever vigilant in going forward. The Board, under the guidance of Scott Israel, has put financial controls in place that serve us in good stead and will continue to do so as we grow older. The light bills have been paid, salaries are in order, expenses are reviewed to ensure they are appropriate and our bills are current. We do have a special reserve fund to deal with any shortfall in dues collection and it is under pressure as we reach the end of our fiscal year. Some members pay their obligation monthly but when our bills come due, and anticipated receipts lag, we pay them on a timely basis using the reserve funds. This fund is replenished as funds come in. We take our fiduciary responsibilities seriously and are up to date on all payables and the management of available reserves is critical to our ongoing operations. The most difficult task for me has been asking our congregants for additional funds. That has not been the fun part of my job. However, it is a necessary one. As you think about the added value BZ makes available to you and your family, please consider an additional contribution, or moving up your scheduled dues payments so that your account is paid up by June 30. By doing so, you give the congregation that additional boost and in essence says you recognize the importance of B'nai Zion in the life of your family and the congregation. The size of any donation is not important, the message of your support is! Thanks!!!!! As I sign off to my presidency my eyes are beginning to tear. The past two years have given me the opportunity to become even more connected to our Jewish heritage. If you haven’t been involved I urge you to consider something that you like to do and figure out a way to do it for and with BZ. The dividends will be shared by you and the BZ family. Shalom y’all but not goodbye!!!!

CJCRS in Transition We have come the end of another school year which means the end to another year at the Chattanooga Jewish Community Religious School. We want to thank all of our teachers, Madrichim, Rabbis and volunteers for their time and dedication to our children. Giving our children solid, comprehensive Jewish education strengthens their identity as Jews and provides the tools for a meaningful Jewish life. M'dor l'Dor — from generation to generation. After seven years at the helm, Ronni Charyn has decided to step down as director with the CJCRS. Under her leadership the religious school faced many challenges and changes. We will all miss Ronni, and we hope to see her and Chaim often. Ronni's decision has ushered us into a transition year, a time to reflect on what we, at both BZ and Mizpah, want from CJCRS. The CJCRS board has met and is focusing on moving forward — identifying those strengths in the program that need to be preserved and focusing on where improvements can be made. Both congregations are represented equally on the board and are working hand in hand to make CJCRS exciting, relevant, and fun for the kids while accomplishing our goals through continued Jewish education. To lead us through the transition and the next academic year, the Board has asked Jackie Rosenfeld and Paula Israel to serve as co-interim directors. They both have backgrounds in Jewish education and both have been intimately involved with CJCRS. We are excited about Jackie and Paula's joint leadership and we look forward to the next school year. Thanks to Ronni, the teachers are in place, and we will continue registration and preparing BZ to host, opening the doors in August. In the meantime, we want to encourage everyone to provide ideas and thoughts about CJCRS — how we can make it better — get our children excited to wake up on Sunday morning and encourage both congregations to feel an ownership and involvement in the joint religious school and educating our children. —submitted by the CJCRS Board

Message from Our Director of Congregational Learning by Jason Cathcart

Delightful Summer Weather It’s hard to believe that summer is here. It was a long, cold winter and we can now start to enjoy the outdoors a little more. Here at BZ, I’ll spend most of June in cleaning mode. We’ll get the school wing ready for next years Beit Sefer Ivri and prepare to welcome back CJCRS to B’nai Zion. My office will have its annual overhaul: papers to file, books to return to the shelf, pens and pencils find their way home, etc. As many folks prepare to travel and enjoy a slower pace, I’d like to encourage people to recognize all the blessings that surround us. So here in this month’s article, is a quick reference guide for some common b’rachot we can say in praise of what God has created. When finding a beautiful tree or flower in your yard or neighborhood say:

. ‍ Öś Ö¸ כָה Ö° ע ×œÖ¸×žâ€Ź, ָ‍ֹ ×”×™× Öś×ž×œÖś ×”Ö¸ ע ×œâ€Ź Öľ ‍ Ö¸ ר ×?Öˇ Ö¸ ×” Ö°×™ ָי ×?‏ Barukh atah ado-nai elo-heinu melekh ha-Olam shkakha lo b’olamo Praised are you, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who has such beauty in God’s world When seeing the ocean say:

THANK YOU RONNI! For the past seven years Ronni Charyn has devoted her time, energy, expertise and enthusiasm towards nurturing our Chattanooga Jewish Congregational Religious School. She has guided teachers, encouraged parents, partnered with rabbis and lay leaders, and – most important of all – inspired the many children and youth whose intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth have been her focus and passion. As Director of CJCRS she has served to remind all of us, and at all times, of the premium value we place on life-long Jewish learning. For all of this and more, we are grateful. Todah Rabbah, Ronni! And all the best to you and Chaim in your future endeavors!

Have a great summer! Mark your calendar...

BZ Family Mazel tov to Jason Shuman who recently became a bar mitzvah all over again in celebration of the anniversary of this important milestone in his life! May this year be even sweeter! Mazel tov to Phillip Sadowitz who won 4th place for the softball throw, and first place in the 50m dash in the Special Olympics this past week. This picture is of his victory pose on the first place platform. Mazel to all our graduates at BZ. Our graduates include Avery Schulman, Danielle Simms, Megan Rohn, Jordan Snetman, Shehan McFadden, Hannah Boulware, Melanie Goldberg, Katie Scheinberg, Eleanor Epstein, and Amanda Boulware. Mazel tov to Barry Parker on the publication of Men of Steel, Hearts of Gold: The Life and Legacy of Mose and Garrison Siskin. Mazel tov once again to the entire Cowan family on supporting Sadie as she takes her place at the adult table as she would say! Thank you for including all of us in your beautiful celebration and allowing us to be part of your family! Mazel tov to Hadas Peled, the Shlicha of the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga, who Wednesday became an aunt (dodah) (again). The Peled family has now officially joined the Chattanooga fan club of the name-- Daniella! Daniella is the daughter of Hadas's sister Vered and her husband, Uri Leger. Only smachot, happy good things! Mazel tov to the winning participants of March Madness. First place winner was Dr. Jim Shire, second place Tal Cohen, and Lynn Hochman took third place. Also we would like to say a few words of appreciation to the staff and volunteers of B'nai Zion (here and in North Carolina) for all the work they do in making B'nai Zion a warm and welcoming home for our congregation. We cannot say enough words for all you do. We especially thank Lester Votava, Joyce Thomas and John Lewis, for whom no job is too large or too small, and our recent office volunteers, Susan Leininger and Faith Goldberg.

Passing the Torch of Editorship of the B’nai Zion Voice A very special thanks to Amelia Allen, who has served as the editor of the B’nai Zion Voice for over ten years. Some may ask what the editor does, when it is Deborah Wint (DW) who lays out and designs the bulletin each month. The answer is that without the editor, the bulletin would lack the guidance that only a long-time congregant of B’nai Zion can give. Amelia has served as the consultant on content, a proofreader, and the authority to finalize the bulletin for printing. Her ideas and suggestions for organization have been invaluable. Amelia wrote the “Volunteer of the Month” column for several years before she recruited Elizabeth Cline as writer. Amelia’s proudest moment as editor of the Voice was in 2004 when she and DW stepped forward at the United Synagogue of Conservative

Judaism’s conference in Boston to accept the Solomon Schechter Award of Excellence. Since then, the bulletin has continued to evolve so that it still stands out among synagogue bulletins. We welcome Joyce Thomas as the new editor of the B’nai Zion Voice. Joyce has worked closely with Amelia and DW on all aspects of bulletin production. Joyce also worked with previous editors, Dr. Steve and Ellie Ulin and Rose Cesario Blount. She has seen BZ transition through four rabbis, and move into the internet age. Change is a concept that is familiar to our new editor, as the bulletin advanced from cut-and-paste to full color publication uploadable to the internet. She looks forward to guiding the bulletin into the ever-evolving future.

Eva and Ross Binder are the children of David and Brenda Hodges-Binder, and siblings of Eli Binder. Their grandparents are Claire Siskin Binder and Dr. Samuel Binder, z''l, and Robert Lloyd Hodges, z''l, and Evelyn Hodges, z''l. Eva is a student of Normal Park Museum Magnet Upper School and Ross is a student of The McCallie School.

Eva has danced with Chattanooga Ballet for ten years, has just gone on pointe and is in the Children’s Company. She is a board diver and placed 4th in 1m and 5th in 3m in her age group in the AAU Springboard Diving Nationals in 2013 in San Antonio. She earned her junior open water certification as a SCUBA diver in 2010. Eva also enjoys conducting science experiments, and spent spring break learning to write computer code. She participated in her first soap box derby in May 2014. Eva is an excellent cook. The family always looks forward to enjoying Eva’s desserts. Eva will use her dance skills to lead the children at Siskin Children’s Institute in movement classes this summer for her bat mitzvah project. She is thrilled for the opportunity to continue the family tradition of service to children with special needs by sharing her love of dance with the children at the Institute. As you know Eva’s great grandfather, Mose Siskin and his brother, Garrison, founded the Institute to serve children with developmental delays. Ross has participated in scouting since first grade and soon will earn his First Class ranks as a boy scout with Patrol 176 on Signal Mountain which is a high adventure patrol. He earned his junior open water SCUBA certification in 2010. Ross enjoys computer games, robotics, climbing and rappelling (he climbed the Walnut Street Bridge wall at age 4), canoeing, BMX biking. Ross's bar mitzvah project involves providing assistance to homeless families in Chattanooga. Ross will undergo volunteer training with Family Promise of Chattanooga which will prepare him to actively participate in serving a meal and planning programming when B'nai Zion teams with the Church of the Nazarene to host homeless families for a week. Please join the Binder family for a kiddush luncheon which will be served after the b'nai mitzvah service on Shabbat, June 14.

“You find yourself at the end of something and it is the start of something new.” Having finished my presidency I needed something new. “Hazak” is a new word to me but the more I hear it the better it sounds. Hazak identifies programs sponsored by B'nai Zion and aimed at responding to the interests of folks like me. The meaning of that statement is reaching a mature audience who enjoy activities aimed at our interests. I will be heading up the effort to offer such programs. We have been in touch with the person at USCJ who has been responsible for Hazak movement system -wide. Stay tuned as we develop programs based on what we as a congregation want after input from all of you. I will be in touch! — Irv Ginsburg, Chair, Hazak BZ Voice

It’s a Wrap! Sisterhood Torah Fund Drive We want to thank all of our many friends and relatives who sent cards remembering our 65th wedding anniversary. We love you all. Dot & Reuben Dubrow and Family

I would like to thank everyone for their positive response and support of our Sisterhood’s Torah Fund drive this year. Torah Fund is a project of Women's League for Conservative Judaism. Over 2 million dollars is raised to provide scholarships for students at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Our Sisterhood proudly raised $2,520.00 to contribute to this worthwhile mission this year. All 14 pledges have been paid, and I will submit our paperwork to the Women’s League in NYC this week. Thank you notes for tax purposes will go out at the same time to those members who have recently submitted their payments as well. My sincere thanks to everyone for making this year a solid success. --Carolyn Sherman BZ Voice

CEMETERY NOTE We have put a lock on the water fountain at the B'nai Zion Cemetery to keep unauthorized people from turning on and leaving on the water. We will make every effort to remove the lock for any funerals or for the Holidays. If you visit the cemetery and wish to wash your hands as you exit, the combination is: 1-left, 9 -right, 48-right (the year Israel was founded -1948). Please remember to lock it back.
