Dear Team, Happy October! The year has flown by, and we've had so much exciting news across the company. I hope you find this edition of The Wave informative and useful. To kick things off, we have an article highlighting the immense amount of work our eCommerce Operations team did to get our equipment built and tested before delivery to Amazon. As Steve Varga highlights, we virtually built a factory from scratch. It's truly impressive. Dennis P. LeStrange President & CEO, BlueCrest

Next, we have our dedicated ICARE awards page. Congratulations to the team members who won in Q2, and please remember to recognize your colleagues for the upcoming All-Employee meeting on December 7. Additionally, our external blog has officially launched. You can keep up to date on all the great content we are putting out into the marketplace by reading, commenting, and sharing our articles across social media and your other professional networks. We're on the cusp of several very exciting product launches, which we've teased here, but their full unveiling must wait until the next edition of the company newsletter. Until then, please enjoy our international highlights, retirement celebrations, and a copy of an interview recently published in The CEO Magazine where we discussed the importance of culture in everything we do here at BlueCrest. As we are now into the final stretch of this fiscal year, I want to remind everyone of those key ingredients for success in Q4: •

Have an acute sense of urgency, everyday matters.

Live the ICARE values of accountability, collaboration, and enthusiasm.

Maintain a high level of positive energy.

I appreciate your hard work and dedication, helping BlueCrest achieve its goals. Let's keep playing as a team, and have a record-breaking 4th quarter! Onward,

AMAZON ADTA PRODUCTION By now, most if not all of you have heard about the significant order BlueCrest received to develop and install automated parcel sorting systems at Amazon logistics centers nationwide where the familiar blue vans get loaded before they hit the road on their local delivery routes. These large and complex sortation systems are being installed across the Country this year. Anecdotally, a system can occupy no less than 5 tractor trailers during the shipping process! However, before they can be delivered and installed the many ‘modules’ that make up these systems need to be built and tested – that is happening at our eCommerce facility in the greater Baltimore area.

Market Context

Currently, Amazon is looking to migrate last mile delivery from partner networks to in-house networks, often with independent contractors called delivery service providers doing the actual delivery in Amazon branded vans. This migration provides more control for reliability and cost. 4

BlueCrest Solution The BlueCrest solution replaces the current manual sortation with a fully automated process. The solution receives products from multiple induction lines to perform singulation, gapping of parcels, top panel scans, and sort-to-hamper.

From virtually nothing to something impressive! The facility being used for this work was a vacant warehouse just a few short months ago. Over this time the eComm Operations Team took it and transformed it into a substantial manufacturing operation, all while the team had already started actively assembling and shipping systems. Like the title of this article says – they took it from virtually nothing to something really impressive, and in record time! This effort was led by Jeremy Stone, Manager of Production, under the leadership of Patrick Ryan, Director of Operations. KUDOS aside, The Wave | October2023

FACILITY Jeremy and Pat will be the first to tell you that this was a superhuman team effort and that they could not have accomplished this without the cross functional cooperation and team work of the entire Baltimore and field-based eComm team. As with all things eComm Baltimore (and Amazon), Rob Stone leads the charge as VP & General Manager of the business unit. Today, the Amazon order is well over half complete with an intense couple of months ahead of them to complete. The facility as designed and built-up can manage the manufacture of modules for a number of systems simultaneously at the rate required for the current ADTA contract. Through careful planning and execution, the facility should be well positioned to handle 1.5 to 2x the volume of work for future business growth. Watch out for announcements regarding the growth we anticipate. Another great example of WINNING as a TEAM!

RISE OF THE COBOTS

Rise of the Cobots Today, we wanted to talk about one of the exciting technological advancements in recent years: the rise of cobots – or, collaborative robots. These remarkable machines are not here to replace human workers, but rather to augment our abilities and revolutionize industries.

Streamlining Utility Billing We live in the digital era, an era where traditional industries—like utilities— face unique challenges: how do we cater to customers who still prefer traditional paper statements while still maintaining efficient and costeffective operations? Utilities need to strike a delicate balance between meeting customer preferences for paper billing all while optimizing their own workflows. Every dollar counts.

Make Your Move: Why Your Business Should Transition to Cloud Software In today's fast-changing tech world, businesses have a chance to make things more seamless, work better together, and get more efficient. One big change is using cloud software. Instead of relying on conventional in-house systems, cloud software can totally change how a mail production business runs. Let’s take a deeper look.

The Wave | October 2023

ASK THE EXPERTS Get tips on best practices for your direct mail, transactional correspondence, eCommerce procedures, vote-by-mail, and more! Ask questions. Connect with your peers in the industry, and learn how to streamline and automate your print, inserting, and sortation workflows for greater efficiency.

The Rising Impact of Private Postal Services We live in an era marked by the rapid advancement of technology. This has resulted in a constant change in consumer demand. Think about how much the last five years have changed your expectations in your day-to-day life: you can order groceries delivered to your house, you can stream brand new movies from the comfort of your home, and you can even order an item off the internet and have it delivered to your house within a few hours.

10 Reasons Why Banking and Finance Will Always Use Transactional Mail While most of the world has moved on to paperless electronic statements, the banking and financial industry—by necessity—still relies heavily on transactional mail. Whether we’re talking about bills, statements, payments, or credit cards sent by the postal service, these mediums are not going away any time soon. Here are ten reasons why banking and financial institutions still use transactional mail.

The Hidden Costs of Using Like Parts The appeal of “like parts” is easy to see. Let’s be honest: they’re affordable. Taken purely at face value, the average-like part may be cheaper than an equivalent BlueCrest part. Businesses running print and mail operations will look to buy like parts and buy them in bulk, to use for their machines.

BLUECREST ICARE AWARDS od by Mimi Wo

Scott Bixler

During Scott's vacation, a bank had a software issue and went down hard. They called Scott directly, who was fishing on his boat. He tried to advise how to figure out the issue from the water. After no initial success, Scott trailered his boat and drove home to jump directly on a call with the client and our support team to figure out the issue and get the mail moving again. The team called him a hero. This kind of dedication to a client and the team earned him a heartfelt thanks from all. Thanks, Scott!

Laura Stevens

Julious Defreitas

As a Site Leader, Julious demonstrated our ICARE behaviors through his guidance and support by assisting third-shift team members. He ensured the team members had all of the information and tools they needed to be successful, often doing so late into the night. One team member claimed they are a much improved technician from spending just one week under Julious. Great job, Julious!

On a daily basis, Laura exceeds expectations. She is proactive in her approach to all tasks and goes above and beyond to ensure all tasks are met without delay. A valued asset to the BC team in ensuring that both internal and external expectations are delivered at +110%. She was especially helpful with the ISO audit. Thank you, Laura!

10

Daniela Gluckert

Daniela continuously goes above and beyond to help resolve issues outside of her remit. She never lets problems stick around, and she engages well with her colleagues ensuring issues are driven to conclusion. Thanks for all your help, Daniela!

Stephanie Vollhardt

Stephanie for the past 10-12 months went above and beyond the call of duty by taking on additional work well outside her job scope. Stephanie successfully managed her positional responsibilities, while taking on more when she agreed to manage the D365 Vendor Add workflow for just about a year. It was impressive how Stephanie was able to find a way to balance her daily job routine, while at the same time delivering additional work and without a decline in service levels. Thank you, Stephanie!

Congratulations to our ICARE Applause Winners from Q2 2023! They were drawn from the ICARE High-Five winners. Who will be next? Recognize a colleague or team today! Marcus Haertel

Marcus is managing and leading our Service team in the South-West of Germany; in this region he had to do several Sorter system relocations for our clients with his teams. The feedback from our clients is outstanding. Clients are telling us: Marcus himself is so dedicated, with his passion, energy and support that all the sorter relocations/ movements were done on time, without any delays and 100% perfect - even when they had to do this over the weekend. Marcus thank you very much for your support!

Chris Platten

One of our major UK clients, Communisis, had a critical client outage over a holiday weekend due to a hardware failure. In addition, the client discovered that their DR systems were also not operational. This failure was not related to any issue with our software and the client does not currently have weekend support and neither does Chris work weekend on-call. Regardless of this, Chris answered the panic call and made himself available. He supported the client in standing up a new virtual environment and installing a backup version of the system until this was all operational. This got the client out of a major client impacting issue and as a result we received the following client feedback: "A personal thank you from me for your support today. We were, as you know, dealing with a high impact incident and your support in resolution has been absolutely instrumental!" ~ Communisis Director of Digital Solutions Great job, Chris!

Matt Riordan

Matt earned great feedback from client HiMark, who thanked Matt for jumping in and supporting them over a hectic weekend. Quote: "Matt is always available and is a great contributor to our partenrship." Matt also helped late on a Friday afternoon to help land a 1M order in time for month's end. Matt was driving home from sales visits in New Jersey and pulled off at a rest stop and where he took time to help us finialize this deal. Way to go, Matt!

INNOVATING THROUGH DISRUPTION by Dennis L eStrangee

This article first appeared in The CEO Magazine.

From The CEO Magazine: The CEO of BlueCrest, Dennis P LeStrange understands the industry trends impacting elements of his business. BlueCrest, a provider of market-leading solutions for print and mail customers, excels in a sector beset by decreasing postal volumes. But that hasn’t harmed growth in the slightest. LeStrange has focused the company on capturing market share through innovation, strategic acquisitions and developing new ecommerce solutions for customers.

Creating a Culture BlueCrest provides a wide range of inserters, printers, sorting equipment and software for the postal, parcel and ecommerce industries. It serves more than 10,000 active clients around the world including in-house mailers, outsourced print service bureaus and ecommerce logistics providers.

16

LeStrange assumed the reins of BlueCrest in 2019 shortly after the company was purchased by Platinum Equity as a carve-out from postage meter pioneer Pitney Bowes. The move, he explains, allowed the company to “blossom on its own. It had different cash needs and a different customer base than most of the other Pitney divisions.” He quickly put his stamp on the firm, so to speak, beginning with BlueCrest’s company culture. The company inherited an experienced workforce from Pitney Bowes – an enormous benefit, according to LeStrange. “But it was a Pitney experience and a Pitney tenure so our first aim was to change the culture,” he says. “Being innovative is critical, particularly in an industry that’s in decline, and is something we do well,” he tells The CEO Magazine. The company established a new mission and vision, which centered on key behaviors, he adds. Those behaviors are incorporated in the acronym ICARE: innovation, collaboration, accountability, resourcefulness and enthusiasm.

Rebranding and Restructuring LeStrange also set about restructuring elements of BlueCrest and building its brand. “We’re constantly refreshing our brand,” he says. “We now bring our culture and cultural aspects into our brand as well as many of our new products and solutions. We bring eCommerce into the story from a production mail-only point of view.” Part of the rebranding involves constantly communicating with customers through an advisory council and attending customer events so they better understand the company.

“We’ve made that part of our company and that culture is part of a performance review on an annual basis; it’s part of our reward mechanism,” he says.

“It’s all about dialogue. You don’t get smarter if you stay in your office; you only get smarter when you step outside,” he points out.

“Everything we do, we relate to our culture. Our success is just a result of our people and our employees, which is all based on culture.”

BlueCrest operates in 17 countries, a differentiator from the competition, LeStrange says. Previously, it managed those markets from within the United States,

The Wave | October 2023

"Everything we do, we relate to our culture. Our success is just a result of our people and our employees, which is all based on culture." a mistake LeStrange corrected. “The only way you can really manage an international operation is outside of the United States,” he says. “You’ve got to have Managing Directors in the larger countries.” He also emphasized growth, despite United States postal volumes declining by three-toseven percent annually over the past decade. “Postal volume is not growing; it’s not going to grow but that doesn’t mean BlueCrest can’t,” he explains. “Our total revenue has increased by 40 percent, half of which is through organic means, and the other half through acquisition.” BlueCrest’s equipment and solutions handle 70 percent of the total mail process in the United States, according to LeStrange, and remains unrivaled in providing end-to-end solutions. “It’s inserting. It’s print, it’s sortation, it’s the

related software and services that go with it,” he reveals. “There’s no other competitor who has that full end-to-end.” The company also remains aggressive in markets with impressive growth, including vote by mail. “We’re not doing any tabulation or that kind of thing. We are, however, sorting ballots, as well as printing and distributing them through our inserters,” he explains. In areas such as small-package ecommerce and mailing loyalty and credit cards, LeStrange believes it’s about innovating to create a standardized process that works across a variety of needs. “Those kinds of things drive growth for us.”

The Power of Partnerships Supply chains were strained during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing headaches for companies around the world; BlueCrest was no exception. “We went from massive shortages on everything from metals to rosins and even electronics,” LeStrange recalls. “In the middle of that, you end up buying whatever you can in order to make sure that you can manufacture the rest of the product and get it out the door to the customer.” Post-pandemic, LeStrange explains that BlueCrest has been re-evaluating the company’s supply chains from a productivity standpoint and gaining efficiency out of its

Enterprise Resource Planning. “We’re looking at our entire manufacturing assembly process to bring productivity into that area, which is really very important. I don’t want a heavy concentration,” he says, in reference to the company’s contract manufacturers. “If you have one particular product made by only one contract manufacturer and they have any disruption in their supply chain, it inevitably impacts you.” The pandemic highlighted the importance of constant and ongoing communication. BlueCrest enjoyed substantial growth in its equipment revenue, which resulted in a need to flex with contract manufacturers as they produced more than ever during the depths of a supply chain crisis, according to LeStrange. “The relationships with these key suppliers have to be like clockwork; it’s essential that there are formal, quarterly business reviews,” he says. “One of the things we learned is that, where we thought we had good, strong communication, there’s always room for improvement. We recognized it and made it our priority.”

Theme in Yellow by Carl Sandburg I spot the hills With yellow balls in autumn. I light the prairie cornfields Orange and tawny gold clusters And I am called pumpkins.
