Maria Savic: fitness junkie, entreprenuer and social media influencer.

Scan to watch video

Maria Savic started out as a fitness model, so she knows that taking care of her body is as much about looking good as it is about feeling good. After coaching fellow women, she broke into the fitness world and developed a cult-like following at Miss Fitness, a company she created to help women with their health and

fitness goals. Her company has managed to help over 300 women change their lives and transform their bodies. We have learnt the way to her heart is through ice cream—specifically chocolate. She makes sure to indulge in some, especially on her cheat days and definitely when she’s on Mars (to know more about this titbit watch

her video interview). Savic looks up to women who are confident, ambitious and are scared of sharks just like us. Who knew we had so much in common? When she isn't busy training women, Savic spends her time collaborating with sports brands, modelling and attending fancy events across the UAE. Savic loves to promote healthy eating

and she manages to post recipe videos on her Instagram page— a great one to watch is her way of making homemade almond milk. To quote Savic, “Confident women don’t hate on other women, as they are not your competition. Let’s raise women and not put them down.” Instagram: @mariasavic Website: www.missfitness.ae

I AM BEAUTIFUL?

08

How many of us ladies can look into the mirror and say, “I’m beautiful”? How many of us can say it and actually believe it? What we don’t really get is that no matter how many beauty products we use it’s the self-image in our head and what we truly believe in our heart that really counts. It’s when we have a huge pimple on our face, look into the mirror and say “Hey beautiful! You’re looking good today” and laugh is when we know we're truly happy. Well! We can’t deny that using Pierre Rene’s Illuminating make up base and Camouflage on p.5 would make us feel a little better.

Some of us are getting ready to welcome family over for the long holiday so we’ve made sure you have your baking equipment ready to impress your mother in law. We’ve also put together some playlists for you so all you need to do is set the table, connect your phone to speakers and voilà! a perfect dinner! Well, yes. You’d have to cook too.

16

There is nothing more difficult than finding the right gift for your man. We will never understand their shopping habits; we know that when they want something they get it right away, so you either need to beat them to it or just get them something practical. We’ve made it easy and put together a list of things for you. All you need to do is download ‘get it’ from the app store or Google Play Store, scan and buy. It’s that simple.

Photography and writing by Goran Matijasec Zanzibar, a melodic clash of Zs. The name of this country evokes a sense of magic, mystery, beauty, and even a whiff violence that the island has witnessed. While most people immediately think of beautiful coral beaches, lagoon-style seas and resorts filled with honeymooners and backpackers, the heart of our trip to Zanzibar was more to connect with the island's beautiful people on a personal level. Walking around the streets, you see a surplus of shops and stalls that sell local artefacts and crafts such as bronze plates, colourful paintings, baskets of spices, colourful scarves and African jewellery. Every single shopkeeper is welcoming and has so many stories to share with the tourists. We also saw several male Massai warriors, who were selling handmade jewellery that the Massai women were making by the beach while their children played around. The Stone Town city is bustling with its maze-like lanes, coral stone walls that glow in the sunlight, and its unique architecture, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One can note a mixture of Arab, Persian, Indian and European influence. It was a treat to watch the local people practicing their street acts right in the middle of the city and around the beaches. The Jozani Forest is Zanzibar's only national park and is home to many indigenous species, such as the Red Colobus Monkey, which manages to attract herds of tourists. They are Africa’s rarest monkeys but in Zanzibar you can easily see these red-coated, white-whiskered species perched together in groups grooming each other. The best time to travel here is between November and March. We highly recommend looking for flights this winter break. You won’t be disappointed.

THE FRIENDLIEST PLACE ON EARTH

Awesome travel photos with mini blogs posts

By Abigail Mathias Taiwan is a bouquet of elements, exotic food, greenery and bustling markets. Adding more flavour to this mix are silent temples, bullet trains and scenic mountains. But what tops the list for me are its people. The capital Taipei, is often the first stop for visitors. Much like any city, it is brimming with sights and sounds that most visitors to the region will be familiar with. Take in the view of the 91st floor of Taipei 101 Tower. It is the tallest building in the country and the world until the Burj Khalifa was built in 2009. You truly see the city come to life when you stroll through the scenic night market, from colourful cell phone covers to swanky leather shoes, you can find it all here. Let’s not forget the strong aromas of the freshly prepared food that are being sold through the busy street carts. When going about shopping, don’t forget to bargain for items. Chances are that if the vendor doesn’t agree to your terms, you will find it a few steps down the road. The Shilin Night Market is the largest and most famous in Taipei, it is open until 2 a.m. The Ximending (pronounced as Shinding) Pedestrian area is also a popular hangout for tourists and the local youth. Taxis and Ubers are easily available till the wee hours. When people refer to heaven on earth, the Sun Moon Lake easily qualifies. Located in the Yuchi Township, Nantou County, the area around the lake is home to Taiwan’s aboriginal Thao tribe. The landscape is made up of cyclists taking in the evening breeze while the sun offers its fading light over the largest vessel of water in the country. The scenic view attracts honeymooners and those amazed by dramatic sunrises. If you are going to visit Taiwan, the most important accessory is a smile.

FEED THE MUSCLE They say that muscles are made in the kitchen, not in the gym. It doesn't matter how great your weight lifting routine may be or how much effort you put into it, it is an exercise in futility without proper nutrition. Here are seven ideal foods for meeting your protein requirement while keeping the body lean and well-nourished.

Beans In addition to having a very favourable ratio of protein to calories, beans are rich in fibre. They also deliver a nutritional bounty of various vitamins and minerals, namely folate and manganese.

Nuts Peanuts, pistachios, walnuts and almonds all contain noteworthy amounts of protein as well as a wide assortment of other nutrients. Mixed nuts may be the best option, as they offer all of the nutritional benefits of each type of nut. Be sure to buy unsalted nuts, as the salted variety contains excessive amounts of sodium.

Exotic Meats "Wild" meats have grown in popularity in recent years. To meet this demand, many ranchers have taken to raising bison, ostrich, camel, and other exotic livestock. The main benefit of eating exotic meats is the low-fat content. These meats also tend to be richer in nutrients as well. For example, bison contains more vitamin B6 and niacin than beef.

Steel Cut Oats Contrary to what you may hear from numerous low-carb diet advocates, carbohydrates are not always detrimental to physical fitness. The whole grain carbohydrates in steel cut oats digest very slowly, providing long-lasting energy throughout the day. They also contain 7 gr of protein per cup of cooked oats as well as loads of fibre, iron, and calcium.

Cottage Cheese It is no surprise that the main benefit of cottage cheese is protein content. At 25 gr of protein per cup, cottage cheese is a must for anyone on a muscle building diet. Plus, it contains significant amounts of selenium, calcium, and vitamin A. However, it usually contains quite a bit of sodium. It is important to make sure that you are not exceeding the recommended limit by including cottage cheese in your diet.

Wild Caught Salmon Everyone knows that fish is a great food for losing fat and building muscle, but why wild caught salmon specifically? The answer is the fat content. Farm-raised salmon live in cramped bins and never move around much. This leads to high levels of fat building up in their bodies. Wild caught salmon are free to swim around in their natural ocean habitat, resulting in a very lean flesh. Wild caught salmon has roughly half the fat content of farm-raised salmon, making it a superb choice for those on high-protein diets.

see it. scan it. get it.

Eggs A mainstay of bodybuilding diets, it's no secret that eggs are a muscle-building superfood. The protein in eggs is believed to have a very high bioavailability factor, meaning that it is easily absorbed and utilised by the body. Some people throw away the yolk in order to avoid the fat content, but they miss out on a big nutritional payload by doing this. Even though it contains a little bit of fat and cholesterol, it also contains protein, iron, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, folate, and vitamins A, B6, B12, D, and E.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Undergoing

PLASTIC SURGERY

Following recent reports of new cosmetic surgery crazes in Dubai for things as far out as the 'Superman six-pack' and the so-called ‘side-bum’, we speak to Dr Ricardo Ferla, a Brazilian Triple Board-Certified, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at The Private Clinic in Jumeriah, to find out the truth behind plastic surgery.

Have I done my research?

• Plastic surgery is a serious commitment—both physically and emotionally. • Make sure that the surgeon is Board-certified and is actually qualified to perform cosmetic procedures. • Look for recommendations from other people. • Research online with the various medical associations.

Is anyone pressuring me into this?

• Make sure you’re going through with the surgery because you

want to—not because of peer pressure, family comments, or for any external reason. • If you do have concerns, speak with a trusted friend or a counsellor.

Can I handle the pain and the recovery?

• There will be some discomfort and pain, depending on the type

of procedure.

• Full recovery may take several weeks. • You need to know you are able to go through this without

becoming distressed.

Do I have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve?

• Don’t have sky-high expectations about a particular experience. • Make sure to understand surgery's capabilities and its limitations. Am I doing this in reaction to a personal crisis?

• Don’t use plastic surgery as a ‘quick fix’ or a distraction from facing the

emotional hurt. • Give yourself time to think clearly and feel positive about any procedure.

KEY TO LUSCIOUS LOCKS THIS WINTER? VITAMINS!

B E A CD

To ensure better hair growth and prevent hair loss this winter, follow Asgar Saboo’s expert advice on vitamin intake.

Vitamin A is vital for proper cell growth. It helps in producing oil on the scalp, which keeps the hair from drying out and breaking. Food sources for vitamin A include cod liver oil, peaches, carrots and spinach.

If you want longer, healthier hair then biotin is a must. It is one of the most widely used supplements for faster hair growth. Biotin is a B vitamin, and it plays a key role in keeping the hair healthy. While most people get a good dose of biotin from the food they eat every day, it is a water soluble vitamin. That means your body cannot retain it and flushes out what it doesn’t use. Food sources of biotin include dairy products, peanut butter, soy bean and legumes.

Vitamin C helps boost immunity and protects against frequent colds and other infections. It helps the body create and produce collagen, a vital protein for healthy hair, skin, and nails. Food sources for Vitamin C include oranges, red peppers, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, strawberries and grapefruit. and kiwi.

Vitamin D can easily be absorbed into the skin by spending around 15 to 20 minutes in the sun every day. But with extreme temperatures in the UAE, it can be easier to take supplements and eat vitamin D-rich foods. Food sources of Vitamin D include halibut, mackerel, salmon, egg yolk, maitake mushrooms and portobello mushrooms.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that repairs and builds tissue, and is essential for healthy hair growth. When you apply vitamin E to your scalp, it reduces inflammation, increases blood circulation, boosts oxygen supply, and repairs damaged hair follicles thanks to its blood-thinning properties. Food sources for vitamin E include almonds, seeds, avocado and broccoli.

Invisibilia

Invisibilia is Latin for "the invisible things". The podcast explores the invisible forces that shape human behavior—things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions. TRY SOMETHING NEW

This is Why You're Single

Creators of the upcoming humour and advice book, Laura Lane and Angela Spera, candidly break down real-life dating disasters with a new "reason why you're single" every week. Each sketch centres on a different “reason” you are single by following the elaborate imaginations of characters as they deal with dating in the complicated new media age. The show exaggerates reality with the occasional genre-bending scene and absurd dream sequence to explore the insecurities and misconceptions of modern dating.

Three Daughters of Eve Elif Shafak Peri, a wealthy Turkish housewife, is on her way to a dinner party at a seaside mansion in Istanbul when a beggar snatches her handbag. As she wrestles to get it back, a photograph falls to the ground—an old polaroid of three young women and their university professor. A relic from a past, and a love, Peri had tried desperately to forget. The photograph takes Peri back to Oxford University, as an 18-year-old sent abroad for the first time. To her dazzling, rebellious professor and his life-changing course on God. To her home with her two best friends, Shirin and Mona, and their arguments and, finally, to the scandal that tore them all apart. AED 85

The 5 Love Languages : The Secret to Love That Lasts Gary Chapman This book outlines five expressions of love—quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, and physical touch—and explains how to identify and communicate effectively in a spouse's "love language". AED 69

surviving the holidays with your

in–laws

With the holiday season approaching us like a tidal wave, many families across the UAE are gearing up for their extended families to visit. Even if you have a fabulous relationship with your in-laws, you still may find it's difficult to spend extended periods of time with them. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your time with the in-laws. OFFER IDEAS Offer a few ideas for different activities so that your in-laws aren't just sitting around waiting for you to entertain them. By any and all means, don't propose a last-minute plan as they are bound to feel unimportant and that is sure to start a storm.

GO SEE SOMETHING If you aren't on the best terms with your in-laws, we would suggest you create several options for entertainment, such as attending movies, watching plays at the Dubai Opera, playing a sport, or attending an art exhibition. Having these buffers will create positive memories while successfully avoiding awkward lulls in conversation. CELEBRATE IN HONOUR OF YOUR IN–LAWS Invite close friends with similar interests to your in-laws so that they can create lively conversations over dinner and help you manage the evening, thus creating a buffer so that you don't have to entertain them all by yourself. SCHEDULE A GETAWAY If you are prone to becoming overwhelmed with tonnes of people, have a pre-planned errand, chore or phone call to make, thus allowing yourself some breathing space. It would be beneficial to discuss this with your spouse beforehand so that you don’t leave him guessing the reason for your sudden departure. JUST FOR YOU Buy tickets to the zoo, desert safari, indoor theme park or a day pass to a local spa and gym. All of these options are ones that will give your in-laws the opportunity to explore our wonderful city, sans you. ALLOW YOUR IN–LAWS TO GET INVOLVED Don’t forget that your in-laws are your family, so it is okay for them to help you out every once in a while. More often than not, your in-laws will wish to help you out with dinners or children, so allow them to pick up your kids from school or spend one-on-one time with just them. This will give you and your spouse the opportunity to go out and paint the town red. It’s a win-win. ACCEPT THE WORST-CASE SCENARIO If you have done all of the above in the past and have still managed to have bad experiences then it may be worth the expense to pay for their hotel accommodations. Just make sure that it's close enough to your home, and remember it's only a week you can do this. We know it's hard and overwhelming, but it's in everyone's best interest to maintain a healthy relationship.
