RESOLUTION TIME What is a resolution, anyway? Well, according to Mr. Google (sorry girls it just sounds like a guy) it is a firm decision to do or not to do something. We all make firm decisions every year only to succumb to the temptations of having sugar, eating bread and enjoying the comfy couch a little longer than usual. I know I’m guilty of doing just that. So, this year I’ve decided not to make any resolutions and just go with the flow. But first I need to part with 2016 with a good celebration. Some of my New Years party options are listed for you on page 18.

19

Yes! I’m starting off the New Year with good food and lots of it. No diets, just the simple advice Ivana suggests on how to control our cravings on page 15, and maybe a little yoga at night to de-stress—like Natalia shows us on page 14. That should do the trick. I look back at this year and am eternally grateful for all the supportive friends, wonderful family and amazing colleagues. I feel truly blessed to know there are people crazy enough to share their love with the insane person that decided to create a magazine that speaks.

18

I’d like to wish you all a wonderful New Year and hope you are blessed with all that you’ve ever desired with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar. See you next year, ladies!

Joelle Mardinian What was your first business venture and how did it go? My very first business venture was Maison de Joelle which I started in 2008 (that was 8 years ago!), and as of today, I have about nine salons across the MENA region. I have about six within the U.A.E, one in Jeddah, one in Qatar and one in Morocco. I have also recently signed up with some other countries so stayed tuned. Can you share some great business tips with our fellow Girl Bosses? Firstly, one of the biggest mistakes that young entrepreneurs make is that they tend to micro-manage and get super involved within their business. I try to make sure that I am always letting the professionals do their job, as that is why I hired them in the first place. I have to trust that they will do their job so that I can focus on business development, come up with new ideas and promote my business through social media. Secondly, empower your employees, give them flexibility and freedom to take decisions while assuring them that you care about them as much as they do you and your business. Don’t hire people who are muppets and are only there to please you! Hire people who can teach you something about your business as you won’t know everything there is to know. Since I have never really run a salon or a business ever before it is important for me to hire people that show me how to in the best manner possible while I explain to them my vision for the business. This way we are all on the same page. Lastly, it is important to keep winning new clients whilst keeping current clients happy as well. As an entrepreneur, you need to make sure that your clients are dedicated to your business so that you can always rely on them when things get a bit tough. How do you come up with new ideas for your business? Oh, for me the greatest ideas come whenever I am in the shower! There is something about the warm water, the shampoo suds and me massaging my scalp, it gets all the ideas and juices flowing (laughs). But on a serious note, I eat, breathe, sleep and live for work. That includes the weekends! The only time I ever completely switch off is whenever I am on the plane and travelling for work or pleasure. The minute I get into a plane I have developed this power to completely switch off, relax and regain my thoughts.

“85% of my workforce

is comprised of women!” Thoughts about women in business? I believe in empowering women, more than 85% of my workforce is comprised of women! I think it is very important to nurture and support women so that they can be given the opportunity to grow and do something great with their lives. What do you want to me when you grow up? I am already grown up! (laughs) I just celebrated my 41st birthday this November, and I am very proud to be forty-one. I have no issue with this number, it is freeing to admit my real age and I honestly know that I couldn’t have achieved everything that I have if I was younger. I never thought that I would be famous in a million years, have my own businesses, be so well known where people know my full name, and all of this is not without hard work. I have always, always, always wanted to be famous even if it was me selling cupcakes, I would have wanted them to be the most delicious and most well-known cupcakes there ever was. Who do you look up to? Within the media platform, I have always looked up to many personalities who have made a name for themselves and I have always been inspired by their stories and how they got to where they are. One such person would have to be Oprah Winfrey, she is someone who has dedicated her whole life to her career and she never got married, had children and I can almost imagine what her real personal life must be like. She truly breathes work and that gives her satisfaction and that is exactly what gives me satisfaction as well. Scan to follow

Best Countries to Visit in 2017! These are the countries that you honestly cannot afford to miss out on, and we reckon these will be the most visited countries of 2017

NEPAL Whether you are an adrenaline junkie or whether you like visiting colourful and exotic places, Nepal hits the spot on all counts. From scaling the slopes of Mt. Everest, to visiting the serene temples and shrines, Nepal is a country that offers memories for a lifetime. The country has various different landscapes, from snowy mountains to tropical forests, which allow visitors to indulge in a number of different activities such as mountaineering, kayaking, paragliding, or simply strolling through medieval palaces and shrines. Nepal can be anyone’s adrenaline adventure, or even simply a cultural eye-opener. Either way, it certainly has the capacity to change one’s life and experiences. Image: Himalaya Mountains of Nepal

MONGOLIA In 2017, Mongolia will present its brandnew capital city airport, which is a massive symbol of a new, modern image and a desire to be open to receiving new visitors. Mongolia offers visitors a distinct combination of nomadic culture and primordial landscapes which are unique to the country. This is a compelling reason to visit before the country becomes more urbanised. Home to the Gobi Desert, one of the most unusual desert landscapes on Earth, it is also home to the last twohumped camels and the Gobi bears, the only bears to be found in a desert habitat. Image: Ulaanbaatar, mongolia

FINLAND Home to incredible landscapes, unspoiled nature and a relatively liberal, modern political system, Finland is a worthy travel destination. During the winter, the Northern Lights can be seen in the northernmost part of the country, while in warmer months many Finns love to head to their summer cottages to enjoy swimming, fishing, and barbecuing. When visiting Finland, it is natural to head to Helsinki, but also include a visit to some of the smaller towns and do visit some of the country’s spectacular natural wonders. Image: Helsinki, Finland

COLOMBIA Despite the decades of civil war and violent crime, this country is a mix of vibrant culture, nature and hospitality. It is also home to some of the best white sand beaches to be found anywhere in the world. There are also plenty of snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities. Do check out the beaches by the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. If you are someone who loves adventure, you must visit the Andes Mountains and the Amazonian rainforests, which are home to some of Colombia’s indigenous tribes and people. Image: Bogota, Colombia

She Said, She Said is an online journal of two friends and their food-based shenanigans across the UAE and beyond. The duo consists of Nancy and Namrata. Nancy is the practical half of the team; she is ambitious, works in PR, believes in eating dessert before dinner, and loves independent cafes. Namrata is the creative one; she works in as a student affairs professional, loves cake, fantasy novels and the electric John Mayer. Read more to understand how they started and came to be making a difference in the world around them. How did you two end up starting a food blog together? We are high school friends and food is something that has always been our connection. We love it and grew up trying all the incredible food that Dubai has to offer. Over the years and many calories later, we realised that our phones were full of food photos. Something had to be done about that and so She Said, She Said was created. We wanted something that would not only serve as a creative outlet from our day jobs but would also be a journal for all the amazing restaurants in Dubai that people should know about. How did you promote your blog initially? Was it through Instagram? Yes, we launched our Instagram and Facebook pages on the same day that we did the website. It was a very helpful tool as social media is so visual and engaging, and a great way to promote the blog. That and the ever-so-dependable word of mouth. We have an amazing support system in our families and friends. What was the weirdest thing you’ve tasted? We started a series on the blog called ‘My friend went to (country) and all they got me was…’ for treats that our friends bring back for us from places that they’re visiting. One of our friends went to Japan recently and brought back some very unusual treats. One in particular we devoured was a bag of what tasted like jerky. Very tasty! We didn’t know what we were eating as all writing was in Japanese. Turns out it was dried squid! Safe to say we won’t be eating that again. What were the most surprising flavours that actually made sense, once you tasted them? A dish that really stood out recently was tandoori lobster with upma that I tried at Indego by Vineet in the Grosvenor House. A traditional breakfast dish, the upma was so unassuming and

REAL SOLUTION FOR DEALING WITH

CELLULITE?

• Drink more water (to boost your metabolism)

Bojana Vucic is a VIP Home Personal Trainer in Dubai Scan to follow

By Bojana Vucic Today’s topic is something that about 90% of women struggle with—cellulite! What exactly is cellulite? Cellulite is nothing more than normal fat beneath the skin. The fat appears lumpy because it pushes against the connective tissue, causing the skin above it to pucker. Cellulite isn’t harmful, and having cellulite doesn’t mean you are overweight. Cellulite is more common among women than men. If other women in your family have cellulite, there’s a good chance you will, too.

• Be physically active, do more cardio exercises—for example, fast walking or running, and especially swimming, because water is massaging your body while you swim. Focus on exercises that affect areas with the cellulite—things like squats, lunges, skipping, bridges, sit-ups, scissors with the legs for the lower stomach, and donkey kicks.

Some other factors that influence how much and how visible cellulite can get include: • Slow metabolism • Hormone changes • Lack of physical activity • Fad dieting • Dehydration • Total body fat • Thickness and colour of your skin Cellulite tends to be less noticeable on darker skin. If you have light skin and plan to be out in a bathing suit or short shorts, applying a self-tanner may make the bumps and dimples on your thighs less noticeable. There are tonnes of information regarding how to get rid of it, from creams and lotions to workout routines, but it isn’t that easy.

OBSESSED WITH

• Treat yourself to an anti-cellulite massage. Be sure to do 10 sessions in a row. Make sure you start your first session of the third day of your period. The first two to three sessions will be very painful and some ladies tend to get bruised, which is normal as it is an aggressive massage.

Control

Food

Cravings Ah, cravings. We’ve all had them. They strike fast and hard. Before you know it, you’ve downed the whole bag of potato chips or vaporised half a tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Not the best thing in the world when trying to be healthy. But contrary to popular belief, you can control your food cravings. Scan Nutritionist Ivana Silva’s image to learn the four-easy-step process to monitor your food intake so that you don’t give in to those cravings.

TURMERIC THE NEW SUPERFOOD

Turmeric is fondly known as the “queen of spices”. This superfood has a sharp taste, is golden in colour and has a pepper-like-aroma. People all over the globe use this herb in their everyday cooking. Some of the known benefits include it having antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory properties. If that’s not impressive enough, it is also loaded with healthy nutrients such as protein, niacin, vitamins C, E, and K, and potassium, iron, magnesium and zinc. Due to all of these above benefits, it is often used to treat a wide variety of health problems. Here are a couple of key benefits to using turmeric.

Scan to watch video

PREVENTS CANCER Helps to prevent prostate cancer, and it also has a preventive effect against tumor cells such as T-cell leukemia, colon carcinomas and breast carcinomas. Studies have shown that it can reduce angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels in tumors), metastasis (spread of cancer), as well as contribute to the death of cancerous cells. RELIEVES ARTHRITIS The anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric are great for treating both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Studies show that individuals who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis experience a lot of relief and reduction in inflammation after consuming turmeric on a regular basis. CONTROLS DIABETES Turmeric helps to moderate insulin levels, improves glucose control and increases the effect of medications used to treat diabetes. Consuming turmeric also helps to reduce insulin resistance, which may prevent the onset of Type-2 diabetes. It is best to consult a healthcare professional before taking turmeric capsules. REDUCES CHOLESTROL Research has proven that simply using turmeric as a food seasoning can reduce serum cholesterol levels. It is a known fact that high cholesterol can lead to other serious health problems.

DETOX YOGA FOR THE

BUSY BEE It’s that time of the year when we take advantage of all the varieties of food, bubblies, late-night parties, and of course the hoards of sweets that are part of every occassion! Naturally detoxification should be the next step, so that’s where Natalia Fata comes in. Natalia is an E-RYT 500-hour Yoga Teacher, who will show us how to detox naturally with very easy yoga poses that we can do anywhere, anytime.

BOOSTS IMMUNITY Turmeric contains a substance known as lipopolysaccharide, which helps stimulate the body’s immune system. Its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents also help strengthen the immune system. A strong immune system is less prone to suffering from cold and cough issues. *Pro Tip: If you are prone to cough and colds you should add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a warm glass of milk and drink it at least once a day. PREVENTS ALZHEIMER’S Brain inflammation is suspected to be one of the leading causes of cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric helps to remove any plaque build-up in the brain and improves the flow of oxygen. This in turn prevents or slows down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. HEALS WOUNDS Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, which is very effective as a natural disinfectant. Another great benefit of turmeric is that it repairs damaged skin and can be used to treat psoriasis or any other inflammatory skin condition. *Pro Tip: If you ever have a cut or burn, just sprinkle some turmeric powder on the affected area to speed up the healing process.

WEEKEND HABITS OF HIGHLY SUCCEESFUL PEOPLE Aristotle once said, “We are what we repeatedly do. OPRAH • PRACTICE STILLNESS Oprah makes time to sit in stillness for 20 minutes—twice a day! Even science has acknowledged the benefits of meditation and mindfulness for reducing stress, improving productivity, facilitating creativity and maintaining general well-being. They don’t call it a meditation “practice” for nothing.

RICHARD BRANSON • GIVE BACK To quote this billionaire entrepreneur, “It is amazing how focusing your mind on issues like health, poverty, conservation and climate change can help to re-energise your thinking in other areas.” Nothing helps put things in perspective and reduce stress more than helping those less fortunate. Also, weekends are the best time to get involved in your local community.

THE LOST ART OF JOURNALING By Bhargavi Nagrecha

O

ne year ago today, where were you? What were your dreams, goals and desires? Were you happy? Were you sad? Or simply just living? When was the last time you thought about these important questions? When was the last time you took out time just to sit back and think about the events of the day? When did we all forget to take care of the most important relationship that we have, the one you have with yourself? It is through the art of looking back and reflecting that we learn the most valuable lessons that have added true value to our life. The best way to remember the journey is to have it written down on paper, or typed out on your laptop.

see it. scan it. get it.

Journaling will offer you a glimpse into that exact moment when you were feeling a very specific emotion—it almost solidifies that emotion as something real and pure. Another cool thing about journaling is that, if you have issues with anxiety or stress, it can really benefit you to keep track of all your ideas, thoughts and feelings. The whole experience of journaling is quite therapeutic and allows you to have an outlet for life’s toughest moments as you are able to process, deal with and release the emotions on a personal level before introducing them to the world. This is your safe space to take time and reflect. It will also offer you a chance to look back and remember all the good and bad moments in your life.

This is a great way to see how far you have come and that in itself is a gift. Here are some simple tips to help you get started: • There are no rules to journaling; some days you might have words pouring out of you like a professional writer and the other day you may just end up doodling, painting or even just writing down your tasks for that day. There are a lot of different ways to express your emotions, so just go out and try them all. • Go to a stationary shop or a cool little boutique shop where you can find the perfect journal for yourself. Look for something that would look great on the nightstand and/or desk as you are more likely to post a

picture of that on Instagram. Also, what woman doesn’t like cute stationary? • Don’t be afraid of commitment, if you aren’t quite ready to update it on a daily basis that is fine—so long as you express yourself, whether it’s once a day, week, month or even a year. • Remember that you are doing this as a personal choice and that there is great joy that comes from journaling. There will be moments in your life where you wish you had an explicit memory of what happened to you at a specific important moment. And that’s when journaling is your best friend as you will always have a record of it from your perspective.

5 WAYS TO OVERCOME FEAR! Living your life in fear is no way to live, as it keeps you from trying new things, moving ahead and from enjoying life. Yes, life is uncertain but that is exactly the same reason why it is the best and most exciting thing ever. The idea of confronting your fear is scary and probably not on your agenda but how can you go on through life with fear? How will you live your best life yet? Here are five easy ways for you to overcome your fear using a simple technique called AWARE. The acronym stands for:

A W

A R

ACCEPT THE ANXIETY Don’t try to fight it, and try to be comfortable in that moment. Trust that you can handle it.

WATCH THE ANXIETY Just focus on the feeling and concentrate on your breathing. Don’t get lost in your fear and just focus on what you are in control of.

ACT NORMALLY Carry on talking or behaving as if nothing is different. This sends a powerful signal to your unconscious mind that its over-dramatic response is actually not needed because nothing that unusual is going on. However, don’t be in denial as that is again a negative response.

REPEAT THE ABOVE STEPS Repeat it in your mind if necessary, to regain your composure.
