First of all, happy New Year, everyone! I’m hoping that 2017 will be everything you hope and dream it to be. This is our 47th issue and it is one to be especially proud of, given we have one of our youngest stars yet on the cover. This month, we are proud to present the sweet, confident and gorgeous Yasmine Zahran, who is only 21 years old. In only two months, Yasmine has managed to achieve over 19,400 followers on Instagram. With time, perseverance and discipline, we see Zahran doing great things; she is definitely someone to look out for. Within this issue we have also scoured the internet far and wide to find you the top Influencers in the Middle East, which should be a fun read for all of you. Also, if you have never explored the world of indie films, then you should definitely check out our intern Suha’s article about some of the best indie films out there. We have so many huge things happening at one8one in digital and video, and I’m absolutely giddy about the future of print, which brings me to a very exciting point. Over the last few issues, we have dived into the world of augmented reality, or AR. Unless you’ve been living in a bunker for the past few years, you’ve probably heard about how AR and its cool, friendly cousin VR (virtual reality) will change the way we consume media and entertainment in the coming years. Within this issue, you’ll find pages that you can bring to life in 3D using your mobile device. Be sure to scan our cover page to watch exclusive video content of Yasmine speaking. Download our app ‘get it’ on iOS or Android and hover your phone over the red play button to watch our pages come to life. I hope that you have as much fun exploring these pages as we did creating them.

How to Save Money

I Cut 3 Unnecessary Spending Habits for 30 Days and This is What Happened Financial gurus note that there are two types of people: savers and spenders. Most of us are the latter; we usually have a habit of making purchases based on what we want instead of what we need. To control my impulsive “I can afford everything” buying mentality, I tracked my spending decisions over the past 30 days. Here’s what I learned—and how you can use these strategies to allow your dirhams to add up in a more impactful way over time.

1. Stop Buying Coffee Every Morning

2. Limiting Dining Out to Special Occasions

I’m a self-proclaimed coffee junkie. I love the smell of freshly ground beans, and I love the ritual of stopping at a coffee shop on my way to work. It feels like a special treat, just for me, before diving into the gazillion tasks of my day. What I realised was that I was easily spending around AED 22 a day. On a beverage! If you do the basic math, that is something like AED 660 a month. So the easiest thing to do was to challenge myself to stop buying coffee for 30 days and simply make it at home.

Growing up, my family usually went out to dinner to celebrate specific events: birthdays, relatives in town, national holidays and the like. We also ordered pizzas a few times a year on Friday nights, which we would enjoy while watching rerun episodes of Friends. Dining out marked a special occasion, and somewhere along the way I forgot that, and eating out became the norm due to my hectic schedule, my not-that-great cooking skills, and my taste for convenience.

Result: It sucked initially, as I remember driving past my go-to coffee shop with sad, puppy-dog eyes. But I eventually learned to get used to it. Now, I save coffee purchases for meetings or when I catch up with friends as these were the moments I could sit, chat and truly enjoy my beverage with good company. Also it was great for saving the extra dirhams.

Result: I didn’t note much of a difference. However, it took a bit more time in order to plan my meals for the week. I also felt better health-wise and had more energy. Sure, pulling out an egg sandwich and an apple at my desk felt less exciting than a KCal sandwich, but spending the extra cash on a nice dinner with my friends was worth every penny at the end of everything.

Monthly saving: AED 572

Monthly saving: AED 600

3. Have Old-School Fun

4. I Stuck to a List

Once I became an independent adult, my idea of fun shifted to events that pretty much always cost money. Dinners, concerts, plays, vacations, classes, parties—it all had a price. So I wanted to see if I remembered how to have fun the old-school way. You know, for free. Turns out there were plenty of things to do, like exploring the Al Quoz art scene, or volunteering at a local animal shelter, or even simply watching Netflix at home with homemade popcorn.

Also known as, “how I avoided accidentally spending AED 200 at Carrefour on stuff I don’t need.” The discount section always calls my name and insists I need new highlighters or decorative candles. But I’m learning that, if I actually stick to a legitimate list of items, I end up saving money. This approach proved useful at any store; before going on errands, I wrote down a list of items I needed and then did my very best to only purchase those specific things.

Result: At first, it felt a little boring, but mostly because my expectations were accustomed to thinking about activities as being Instagram-able first and foremost. I also felt a little self-conscious and lame by offering up alternative suggestions to friends who wanted to go out. But I got over it, and my friends never honestly seemed to mind because they just wanted to spend time together. Monthly saving: AED 350

Result: Was it less fun to shop that way? Well, yes. It feels limiting to buy what’s on your list rather than view a store as your oyster. However, I’m not made of money and need to stick to a budget. This helped, immensely. One surprising perk: I also saved a lot of time by sticking to a list because I didn’t aimlessly wander around the store every time; I got in and got out with the things that I needed. Monthly saving: AED 120 TOTAL SAVINGS: AED 1,645 Cutting these four items from my monthly budget taught me valuable lessons and put hundreds of dirhams back into my bank account. Most importantly, it reminded me to make more meaningful, thoughtful financial choices.

Indie FIlms

Beginners Guide to

Indie Films Have you ventured into the world of indie movies? Indie movies or, independent movies, are small-budgeted films created by directors without huge production houses backing them up. An indie film does not get the promotion or marketing of a blockbuster movie, and is usually promoted through word of mouth or social media. These independent directors have more creative control and can talk about unconventional storylines. This is a great way to break free from the stereotypical Hollywood blockbusters and support the regular folks who have a new and different story to tell. Here are some great indie movies to start with.

Camp X-Ray (2014) Camp X-Ray stars Kristen Stewart as a guard in Guantanamo Bay and Peyman Maadi as an inmate. The story revolves around their developing relationship as perspectives are shifted. The actors beautifully anchor the movie towards a non-political and unbiased representation of both sides.

Still Alice (2014) Julianne Moore stars as the lead of this indie film. The movie sees Moore as a professor who is slowing descending into Alzheimer’s. The movie was eventually reproduced by Hollywood due to its success. Julianne Moore won an Oscar for her performance.

Regression (2015) Ethan Hawke plays the role of a detective, investigating the case of Angela (played by Emma Watson), who accuses her father of an unspeakable crime. The movie brings to life the refreshing qualities of a true detective movie.

Self-Help

Disposing of Emotional Baggage Wouldn’t it be nice if we could simply lose our emotional baggage the same way we lose our mobile phones or stationary? The emotional baggage you get stuck with is full of memories, traumas and fears. There is nothing good about carrying all those negative emotions through life, especially into the New Year. Of course, all things take time and discipline. Here are some ways to let go of the weight you’ve been carrying around for a really long time.

Find at least one positive from your tough experiences Every obstacle that you have faced in your life provides you with a learning experience. You can circumvent those obstacles if they recur in the future. Also, you become wiser and emotionally stronger than you had been before you had faced those obstacles. Furthermore, looking for the good in the past helps you to reclaim your power. You can choose not to be a victim because you get to decide what you take from that experience.

Identify the blind spots The first step to moving on is to be completely honest with yourself and a willingness to dig deep down and talk to a friend or family member about it. Openly face your issues. Find out the root cause of your problem, and if nothing else you will feel lighter.

Laugh as much as you can Watch funny videos and laugh as hard as you can. The phrase “laughter is the best medicine” can be applicable here. Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humour lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert. Who knew what a tremendous impact laughter had on our emotional state?

see it. scan it. get it.

Stay in the present moment to stop the past from affecting you

Pay attention to your self-talk Are you constantly reminding yourself of your failures? Are you telling yourself that you will never be happy again? Because the things you tell yourself can have a major impact on your life. Sooner or later, you will start believing those things and you will end up a bigger mess than you already are. Remind yourself of all your strengths and accomplishments.

Are you allowing your past relationships to control your current? Research has shown that, when you can stay in the moment and not allow your mind to wander, you are the happiest. If you allow your emotional baggage to affect your current life, you are recreating your past into reality. If you stay in the present, you are more likely to relish the moment, creating a more fulfilling relationship.

Forgiveness

Stop blaming others It’s so much easier to blame your problems on other people. But eventually, you have to take responsibility for your life, your actions and your emotions. The blame game doesn’t change anything. This includes blaming yourself for what happened. What’s done is done. Blaming someone won’t undo the events that occurred. Blame will prevent you from going further and do you really want to be stuck feeling this bad for the rest of your life when you could be enjoying it?

“No matter how violent it was, how deep it was, how prolonged it was, no matter how much effect there’s been in your life, if you do not extend forgiveness, you are the person stuck with the bitterness and revenge,” said Dr Dave Currie, National Director of Family Life Canada. Do you really want to be that splenetic loner who has no friends? I think not. Forgiving yourself if needed, too. Only you have the option to take charge of your emotions and choose how they will affect you, as well as others, for the rest of your life. So, if you want to rid yourself from the ghosts of the past, forgiveness brings you one step closer.

I have acne on my face and it’s slowly ruining my self-confidence. I hate the sight of my reflection, I don’t take pictures and I barely go out in public. Girls can cover it up with makeup but what do guys cover it with? It makes me feel so ugly. Imran, 14 Acne is a pretty normal thing that everyone goes through—some less severely than others. What you need to keep in mind is that people probably don’t notice it as much as you do. Are you really going to let a few spots and bumps alter the way you feel about yourself? Make your own mantra and recite it to yourself while staring at your reflection. After a while, they won’t be just words anymore and you will start believing them. Drink a lot of water and refrain from eating food enriched in carbohydrates, oil, sugar and salt. If you don’t notice much of a difference, then consult a dermatologist.

All my friends smoke and, lately, they’ve been pressuring me into trying it. I don’t want to do it. What do I do? What do I say without seeming like a wimp? Oscar, 13 In our opinion, they are not your friends if they’re forcing you into doing something that you are not comfortable doing. By not giving in, you’re showing that you are wise enough to know your limits and differentiate between right and wrong. Keep in mind that you should be friends with people who have a positive influence on your life. Tell them it’s not your thing and if they don’t understand, then there’s your answer. What’s more, smoking is illegal in the UAE for under-18s.

I think I have social anxiety as I can’t seem to talk to new people and I don’t have a lot of friends. How do I change that? Sarah, 21 Start doing little things out of your comfort zone. If you like someone’s outfit, tell them. Don’t overthink everything you do. Set small goals that you can accomplish every day. If you do something every day for 21 days, it becomes a habit. Oh, and don’t forget to smile. It makes you appear more approachable.

My parents want me to join the football team because our family has a history of great football players but it just doesn’t interest me. I’d rather join the choir. How do I gently convey that message to my parents? Ahmed, 16 We’ve all been there. Sit them down and let them know how you feel. If you do something that you don’t feel passionate about, then you’re just wasting precious time. If they don’t agree with you, it’s probably because they haven’t seen your potential. If it’s the choir you want to join, play them an instrument or sing them a song. If your parents think you are talented, then nothing is going to stop them from letting you join the choir.

Being fat is not the only offensive word that can be used to describe someone’s body. A lot of people think that being called skinny or stick-thin is a compliment. It’s not. It’s just as offensive as someone calling me fat. I never know what to say to people when they use those words to describe me. How do I speak up for myself? Shania, 19 First of all, you need to learn to accept yourself. When you learn to accept yourself, other people’s words won’t affect you anymore. You are a person, you are more than just your physical appearance. We’re all human, we all have flaws. No one is perfect, so, why not embrace your flaws? Secondly, if it really bothers you then try to confront the person. Pull them aside and politely let them know how you feel when they use those words. They don’t have any right to comment on your physical appearance and you should let them know that. by Sumaya Nayr

OVER

SUPREMACY

SOS Music is a Dubai-based hip-hop group. On first impressions, you may think SOS (Secrecy Over Supremacy) is one heck of a name for this young and fast-rising group. But you’ll have to wait for them to educate you on the true meaning of their name and how they came about to really get it. We catch up with the group to find out more.

Tell us about SOS Music. How did you guys meet? Well, back in 2013, our brother by the name Tyler Fray was the one who started the group and came up with the meaning behind SOS. Unfortunately his time on this earth got limited and he passed away in February, 2014. The group now comprises four artists; we met in Knowledge Village during our time at university. Our investor and mentor attended a music festival where we were individually performing in late 2014, and thought it would be great to see all of us in a group. As a group, we have no lead singer, and our mentor and manager are heavily involved in decision making and creating a sense of direction for the band.

Growing up, who would you say influenced your music the most? As individuals we all had different musical influences. Therefore, as a group, our influences come from a range of artists with different of sounds. Genres such as rap, hip-hop, RnB, reggae, dancehall, Afro-beats, grime and pop stand out to us and therefore a lot of those sounds will transpire in our music through a genre we call “Ufro”—Urban-Afro fusion.

What is the future of hip-hop music in the UAE and the Middle East in general? The music scene in general in the UAE is moving towards a positive direction. As far as the Middle East, music has always had a positive impact and we just hope to be the leading pioneers in creating an industry. Furthermore, we hope to branch out and collaborate with other musicians in different industries in order to expand and attract other listeners and supporters who can help grow our own industry.

SOS has been featured on BBC Radio Asia and has also performed at a hip-hop showcase here in Dubai. What does it feel like to be featured regionally as well as internationally? Honestly it feels great, and again it is a privilege to be featured on such high platforms and also in your magazine.

WE STRONGLY BELIEVE IN THE MEANING BEHIND SOS—WORK HARD IN SILENCE AND LET SUCCESS DO THE TALKING.

It goes on to reaffirm our goal to be a group from Dubai that is able to make music that cuts across globally.

How often do you get together to perfect your craft? If it’s not every day in person, then we stay connected through social media and always keep each other up to date with not only the music but with everything else that relates to the craft. We try to keep our timing scheduled as we have way too much work to do, so whether it’s just brainstorming ideas, setting goals or writing and recording music, we try to meet up as much as we can and stay busy.

The group comprises individuals from different nationalities. Do you experience any cultural shocks or differences when working together? Well I wouldn’t say so, because if you look at the group, despite the fact that we are of different nationalities, we are pretty open-minded people. In addition, we understand the diversities in a place like Dubai, and so at the end of the day we do what’s best for the group with respect to each other, without having an autonomous leader. As the saying goes, “Treat others the way you would like to be treated.”

Where do you see the group five years from now? Ideally, we would like to say that in five years, with the grace from God, we will have been able to execute our current plans and continue to produce quality music. Our work ethic and hopes are high, and we move forward maintaining a positive and optimistic outlook. No-one is ever completely certain of what the future holds but we strongly believe in the meaning behind SOS—work hard in silence and let success do the talking. We hope, in five years, the amount of work we put in will in turn reflect the level of success we attain. Great things are on the horizon.

KO SAMUI A Place Close to Paradise Whenever I mention Ko Samui, confusion sets itself perfectly on the faces of my fellow comrades. I’ve spent quite a while touring Ko Samui, gaining the confidence I need to explain what makes the island one of the best places to visit. Right behind Phuket, Koh Samui is the second largest island in Thailand, just off the coast of Kra Isthmus with a population of over 63,000 and a hotel occupancy rate of 73%. Ko Samui is a place for everyone and is generally beautiful in nature. The long, sandy beaches and clean, fresh air will leave you breathless. For those who live the nightlife, there are a number of lively bars, restaurants and many other fun-filled places to keep you busy. I, on the other hand, wanted to have a more peaceful stay. Taking a break from the buzz of the city was a bit tough for me, but I had a profound need to experience the other aspects the island has to offer. One of the great places I visited was Crystal Bay. It is said to be the most beautiful beach on the island. Packed with clean air, white gleaming sand, blue skies and crystal-clear water—does it get any better than this? Although Ko Samui isn’t well-known for snorkeling, you can still find marvelous sealife to admire. The ocean itself is simply stunning. I spent most of my time lazing underneath the palm trees listening to the beautiful birds chime, sipping on coconut juice as the cool summer breeze swayed the hammock that I laid on.

Also, a highly recommended place to visit would be the Coral Cove, just a few-hundred metres from Crystal Bay towards Chaweng. Honestly, the place took me by surprise. I didn’t expect much out of it, being the small area that it is. So I was really amazed to see how clear and blue the water was and the fact that you can actually go snorkeling. You can see tons of fish, crabs, anemones, starfish and beautiful corals—all of which make for really great pictures. If you want a nice place to chill under the hot sun then the Na Muang waterfall is definitely a place to see. The tranquil atmosphere is so relaxing that it’s almost too good to be true. The little waterfall is a great place to take some really good pictures and the water is indescribably crystal clear—I couldn’t have been more amazed. If ever you decide to visit Na Muang, make sure you take a trip up the mountain. The view that I had of the island was remarkable. The untouched, serene waterfall and the lush jungle were far beyond words. Ko Samui has many great things to offer, being one of the many islands to visit in Asia. Lined up with amazing beaches, fun-filled activities and breathtaking jungles and waterfalls, Ko Samui will surely leave a long and lasting impression on you.

Crazy Sports

Weird AND Crazy Sports Across The World

Muggle Quidditch

Mud Olympics

If you think you know everything about sport, think again. For you are about to be astonished by the strange, crazy and weird games from around the world.

If you think Quidditch is just a fictional game then you are sadly mistaken. The broomstick-based sport may have originated in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books, but fans were quick to develop their own (more earthbound) version, dubbed Muggle Quidditch. There are now more than 200 colleges in the USA affiliated with the International Quidditch Association.

Brunsbuettel, a small city in northern Germany, plays host every year to the Mud Olympics or Wattoluempiade. Hundreds of competitors battle to play volleyball, handball and other sports while immersed in the thick, sticky mud flats of the River Elbe. Spa day, anyone?

Worm Charming Championships

Sepak Takraw Volleyball

Bathtubbing Competition

Have you heard of the annual World Worm Charming Championship in Wilaston, Cheshire? It’s basically a competition where contestants use a variety of ingenious methods to try and persuade worms to come out of the ground. The world record was set in 2009, when a 10-year-old girl managed to entice 567 of the wriggly creatures up from the soil.

Imagine a game of volleyball where you can hit the ball with anything except your hands or arms, and you’ve basically got sepak takraw. Said to have been invented by the Malaysian royal family over 500 years ago, it’s particularly popular in Malaysia and Thailand.

The unusual sport of racing in bathtubs, called bathtubbing, has been around for a long time. There are many variations, and there appears to be a few World Championships held around the world. The bath tub can be either propelled by a motor, or paddled like a canoe.

Finn Wife carrying

Scottish Caber Toss

World Chess Boxing Organisation

Finland is the birthplace of wife carrying, a sport which sees male competitors race along an obstacle course while carrying a female team-mate. If you win the annual competition in Sonkajärvi, Finland, you supposedly are awarded the weight of your “wife” in drinks.

This Scottish sport goes back to the Celtics. One family elects a man to carry a 20-foot log and throw it as far as he can. Lots of Scottish jokes have been made using this sport. This is one of the many competitive sports of Scotland. This sport has caused a couple of fires because, every now and then, someone throws the log so high and far that it hits an electric pylon.

The perfect sport for those who are both brawny and brainy, chess boxing sees competitors alternate rounds of boxing and chess. The World Chess Boxing Organisation has been inspired by a science fiction graphic novel, and has managed to become a big hit in London and Berlin.

Japanese Performance Wrestling

Unicycle Football

Dog Surfing Competition

If you’ve always dreamed of seeing Japanese-style monsters wrestle, look no further than Kaiju Big Battle. The sport-cum-performance art was invented by Boston students, and involves players taking on a range of extravagant personalities from So Feng (a Viking-style superhero) to Dr Cube (an evil plastic surgeon) to do battle in an arena.

You don’t get a coin-toss at the start of a unicycle football game; instead, there’s a “unicycle joust”, using boxing gloves on long sticks. The sport was born in Texas in 1998, and there are now eight teams that compete in the Unicycle Football League.

No, you’re not going mad—that really is a dog on a surfboard. Every year, dogs of all shapes and sizes are taken to Imperial Beach in San Diego, California to take part in a surf dog competition.

Up and coming makeup guru Yasmine Zahran is a force to be reckoned with. At only 21 years of age and about two months in the industry, Zahran is turning a lot more than just heads. With a completely packed schedule and an Instagram account bursting with gorgeous looks, tutorials, travel and adventure, she is one to watch out for in 2017. We catch up with Zahran to get you the inside scoop on how she does it all, what inspires her and how she got her big break as a makeup artist.

You studied filmmaking, so how did you get into makeup? I have always loved makeup and have previously always done makeup for family and friends. So when I was studying filmmaking, I would usually take the position of a production designer. This was the only position where I could freely explore makeup and design since I loved to be creative. This gave me the opportunity to design the whole studio and so this was the moment I knew that I loved makeup so much that I wanted to do it professionally. I am also a self-taught makeup artist, and I learned all my skills from watching countless hours on YouTube until I was finally confident in my abilities and skills. And now I just draw freely.

Did you always want to be a makeup artist? Yes, I have always wanted to be a makeup artist, but I was always scared of not being taken seriously. This is why I would always work even while I was studying because I always had the thought that I need to make my parents proud, or that I need to be working harder, and that I should be doing more. I was really afraid that being a makeup artist wouldn’t be as serious as, say, a doctor or lawyer. I was always afraid of not being accepted. But thankfully that wasn’t the case.

How did you manage to get your followers? Honestly, believe it or not, I only went public two months ago! I think the reason it kicked off really, really fast was because of Huda Kattan (Huda Beauty), she basically supported me. She reposted my video on her Instagram account and after that, I had so many people who supported me despite the fact that I was just beginning. Through that experience, and even after that, it grew really, really quickly as I consistently posted content that was of value to viewers.

How do you make a living as an influencer? At the moment I don’t make any money out of social media and/or being an influencer. However I make money by being a freelance makeup artist and I use social media to my advantage where I can show off what I can do through tutorials, posts, different looks and vibes. Social media has become my portfolio and this is how clients can understand the complete scope of what I can do, and this allows them to trust me to do it for them.

What difficulties have you faced? I have had to deal with a lot of people who are very negative and they don’t always accept the looks that I am going for. They usually find it too dramatic or simply too much. But what they don’t seem to understand is that this is how a makeup artist shows his or her creativity. Also, I don’t like to stick to one thing; I like to show off many different looks and not everyone accepts that. And I don’t expect them to accept everything. Scan to follow

What three things do you need to be successful in this job? Oh most definitely patience, having faith, and creativity! Loving what you do is really important—always make sure to have fun.

How do you market yourself? I don’t like to define myself as something specific because I like to be open to more options and opportunities as compared to limiting myself to only one specific thing. But if I have to market myself as something it would be to be a person who followed her dreams.

the proudest moment is whenever I finish a client’s makeup and she is smiling from ear to ear!

How did you get through to doing makeup for celebrities? I actually interned for a PR company called Think Smart for about two years. This exposed me to all the influencers and celebrities. This way, I already had that connection with them and knew them all along. That is why it was somewhat easier to approach them as I had this previous relationship with them. So when they heard about my new freelance business they supported me even more than I expected them to.

What do you do with your free time? With my free time, I am working (laughs). There is no free time because there is a lot of competition out there and so every minute counts. Any free time that I have is dedicated to my clients. If I take off even one or two days and I am not updating myself or being present on social media and creating new content, that’s when things usually slow down.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume or social media accounts alone? I would say not to judge me just my social media platforms as I have been through so many rough times. I have gone through health issues since the age of three up until now. I have to actively put that aside, move on and simply follow my dreams and do what I love the most. Anyone who looks at me wouldn’t have thought of that even for a second.

What were you like in high school? In high school, I was extremely shy and I wasn’t confident at all. I had really bad hair (I am Egyptian and so I have really curly hair), I wouldn’t take care of myself, I was bullied a lot and spoken about a lot since I was always by myself. I feel like, because I got into the makeup industry, my confidence grew 10 times more and I am just happier as a person now.

What’s the best advice you have ever received? Hands-down the best advice I was ever given was, “No pain, no gain,” and this is something that I actually live by every single day, whether it’s with my makeup business, with family, friends or even my health.

What was the hardest thing to experience in your field? The hardest thing to go through was when people weren’t supportive, or people who showed support to my face but would actually talk trash behind my back. Some people feel the need to break down someone else who is trying to be successful and these are the kind of experiences that are the hardest to deal with.

What’s your proudest moment? Honestly, the proudest moment is whenever I finish a client’s makeup and she is smiling from ear to ear. That itself for me brings me so much joy, even more so if she is a bride! It makes me super happy whenever a lady feels happy and beautiful inside and out.

Who is your role model, and why? It is very hard to choose between both my parents but if I had to choose it would have to be my mum. My mum inspired me to follow my dreams just as she did herself. She created a campaign to help children with special needs through music. She also followed her passion and her dreams. She works to make people happy.

What advice would you give to young adults who wish to create their own business? Go ahead and don’t let anything get in your way! Visualise yourself one year in advance, and you know for a fact, regardless of what happens, that you will thank yourself for starting. So stop making excuses and just do it!

Rafael Nadal marked his territory on the Mubadala World Tennis Championship this December, after retaining the title for the second consecutive year and his fourth win overall at the tournament in its nine-year history. The Spaniard played World number-11 David Goffin for the first time in an electrifying display of tennis that showed the Abu Dhabi crowds that he was back.

by taking wins from Tomas Berdych, Milos Raonic and David Goffin. The final was full of firsts, as Belgian Goffin had never played in the tournament before and equally had never played Nadal in a competitive match either. Goffin played all three days of the tournament, too, reaching the final with big wins over JoWilfried Tsonga and a jaw-dropping win over world number-one Andy Murray.

Thousands of fans descended on the International Tennis Centre at Zayed Sports City over the three-day tournament, witnessing a total of seven magnificent matches featuring six of the world’s best-known tennis players. Due to its success, organisers during the trophy ceremony revealed that the tournament will return from 28 to 30 December 2017 for the tenth-anniversary edition, with tickets going on sale soon. Nadal played all three days of the tournament for the first time, and put on a sensational show every day in the capital

The final was everything fans had hoped it would be and more. Nadal brought his Spanish flavour to the game, while Goffin continued to wow the crowds with his quick reactions and momentum around the court. Nadal made the only break late on in the first set to win it 6-4, after even play from both finalists. The Belgian recovered well at the start of the second set, breaking Nadal’s momentum and serve to lead 2-1. Nadal returned the favour, stealing Goffin’s serve to tie it back up to 3-3. super set, which lasted a lengthy one hour and 14 minutes. But it was Nadal’s persistence and knowledge of the court that won out in the end. The Spaniard took the glassware 7-5. Before the final, Murray, who will soon become Sir Andy Murray after being named in the New Year’s Honours List to receive a knighthood, fought world number-three Milos Raonic for third place. Murray broke Raonic early in the first set, losing his serve once to make it 6-3 in 34 minutes. Raonic picked up some momentum in the second set and, just when it looked as though Murray would take the set, the Canadian made a comeback to push it to a tie-break. Murray battled back to take the tie-break 8-6 and second set on a memorable day for the future knight. Tell us more about your participation in the Winter festival. I was performing at a couple of different events throughout Dubai the previous week, and the folks from the Winter Festival asked me if I wanted to be a part of the event. They knew that I am a big Dunkin’ Donuts fan. I didn’t hesitate even for a moment since I am such a big coffee junkie. Everyone who knows me knows that about me—even my Instagram account is filled with coffee. Hence I was there to support the event and be the usual fan that I am.

Omar Dean R&B/Soul Singer

Tell us about your career, your debut, and your achievements. It’s been a whirlwind for me; people have been very supportive and I have always wanted to be an artist. And I knew that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I actually started in Melbourne, Australia, where I would perform live on the street, with my guitar and hat. At the time, people’s reactions were great and that was enough for me to know that I really want to do this for the rest of my life. I refined my craft, I used YouTube and through that one of my videos went viral, which helped me gain a fanbase. After that, at 18, I participated on The X Factor, where I came through within the top six, which got me really good publicity. From there, I started touring and that brought me to the Middle-East and back to my roots. There have been several obstacles along the way; it wasn’t completely smooth sailing. There has been a lot of hustle and a lot of times away from my family and friends. The whole process is slowly but surely becoming my reality. I am super grateful for these opportunities.

How does it feel to be the new face of Dunkin’ Donuts? The whole campaign is amazing and, regardless of where I travel, I make sure to get some coffee and that usually is Dunkin’ Donuts for me. Even a normal outing with friends is us usually getting coffee and, of course, some donuts. I love supporting things that I genuinely care about; to me it’s not about being fake. Dunkin’ Donuts is a brand that values energy and positive thinking. I’m delighted to be associated with the brand’s values, and want to add my voice to the DD Fan campaign and connect with my fans in a real and genuine way using social media.

Omar Dean, 24, Australian-Lebanese, Melbourne- based artist, has become a household name due to his success on The X Factor Australia (2013), where he secured his place in the top 12 acts of the country, ranking sixth. However, like any struggling musician trying to leave an imprint on a brutal industry, Dean’s road to attainment is a story of arduous struggle and selfsacrifice, surviving only through his unyielding determination, and a passion for music that overrides the nature of life. Here is what he has to say about the journey thus far.

What are your future plans? My coach on The Voice—his daughter, Maritta Hallani who is known throughout the Arab World, she and I have worked on a song together and that will be coming out soon. I don’t have the exact dates yet, but we have finished recording the duo, which is super exciting. The song is very uplifting, happy and it sends a good message across. I will also personally be releasing new music and will start touring from Australia to the Middle East. I am super excited for everyone to hear my voice and my stories through the music.

Fun Fact? I am super-shy as a person, and, the first few times that I went on to perform, the microphone nearly fell out of my hands as I was shaking so bad or I fell. The first few times were superinteresting and I have gained confidence since.

DÖNER & GYROS

Restaurant Review

Döner & Gyros has several branches in Dubai Marina, DIFC, Al Barsha, Kite Beach, Business Bay, Bur Dubai and Paragon Bay Mall, Abu Dhabi, making the meals extremely accessible. We started off by ordering a best seller, the Classic Berlin Doner. Our first impression was, “Wow, there’s a lot going on in here.” Tender chunks of meat were placed on a pile of red cabbage, crisp lettuce, tomato and onions in a flatbread along with an exquisite fusion of sauces. The most flabbergasting thing, though, was that each time the staff made us a sandwich, they weighed their meat right before. Talk about consistency! Next came the Garden Style Gyro, a tzatziki-based wrap. This was a comparatively healthier option as it consisted of a smaller portion of meat and more grilled vegetables; suitable for people with little to no spice tolerance. For the vegetarians out there, the Vegetable Power Doner is stunningly gratifying. It was an explosion of spices with a slightly zesty twist, consisting of crispy flatbread with grilled eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms and red cabbage with a potent, tangy sauce.

THE BEESKET JUICE Have you ever imagined drinking a blend of different flavours through a honeycomb? Well here’s your chance to try it! Beesket is a juice bar newly opened in the Gulf region— specifically, Dubai. The concept is fresher and more unique than anything that has ever been introduced in Dubai. We walked into Dubai Mall on a fine Sunday afternoon hoping to grab lunch at a good restaurant or maybe a cafe, when we noticed the Beesket kiosk and thought we’d give it a shot! We got in touch with the manager, Satyajit A. Tipnis, who explained the entire process to us. What’s a beesket and how does it work? How is it different and more unique than any other juice bar? A beesket is a cup-shaped container divided into three hollow sections, which allow us to fit a peg into each of its sections. The pegs have been labelled with different fruits and fitted into their honeycomb nests respectively. The concept of the beesket is to mix in three different fruit flavours, ranging from dragonfruit to kale, to make a completely new juice. Excited, each of us collected a beesket and three unique flavours to get our juices prepared. Oh, but of course, the manager insisted that we have the full experience since we were exploring his kiosk for the first time. He suggested that we try the Arabian shake, which is a regional special. The shake had an interesting blend of flavours—banana, dates and milk. Each juice had a lovely taste to it—tangy, tart, sweet, and more. We all tried to mix in different flavours so as to be able to experiment with new fruits and hopefully develop new tastes. Besides the juice, the ambience was quite impressive. Being a kiosk, the place still had bright and colourful chairs to sit on— not to mention how cosy they were, which we all were quite grateful for since we were feeling particularly lazy by the end of the experience! *Approximate Price: AED 40 for two people.

At this point, your stomach will explode but don’t leave before trying the chocolate kebab. The creamy milk and white chocolate were temptingly rotated on a rotisserie before they were scraped off into perfect saccharine swirls that quite literally melted in the mouth. However, the pancake itself was a slight letdown due to its elastic texture. Overall, these rustic sandwiches are a healthier and economical alternative to the common fast food found in the UAE these days. Despite the fact that they were slightly cumbersome to eat, due to the size of the portions, they were large enough to be shared by two while the cost only came to an average of AED 65.

THE ACAI SPOT Finding a healthy, affordable, attractive and delicious place to eat seems like an impossible task. But we’ve hit gold and found the perfect spot, or to be more precise, the Açai Spot. Açai is a beauty berry packed with antioxidants, minerals and calcium that grows in the Amazonian forest in Brazil. And it’s the main ingredient infused into most of the items you’d find on the menu of this small yet vibrant café, as well as the inspiration to its name. Açai fruit mixes, salads, snacks and mocktails are some of the items you’d find on the menu. The bestsellers included the avocado toast (28 Dhs), which is an elegant combination of protein bread, green leaves, avocado and Italian sauce. The entire dish was so fresh and healthy, with the sauce bringing all the flavours together. And the best part is there’s no guilt involved!

STOMPING GROUNDS Located in an urban villa in Jumeirah 1, this speciality coffee hub is the place to be these days—even the country’s rulers think so. Famous for its locally roasted coffee beans sourced from a variety of tropical countries from Panama to Columbia, the rustic café has a homely vibe and a calmness that makes it difficult to leave. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by the warm, aromatic smell of roasted coffee beans that permeated the air. We were quick to order a house blended cappuccino made with Sumatra beans, seeing as it was is a crowd favourite. The coffee had woody undertones but as it dispersed in our mouths, it seemed to contort into a floral essence, which left us flummoxed.

The highlight was the Loved One (45 Dhs), which is a fitting name for the bestselling Açai fruit mix layered with Greek yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, and granola, topped with a signature Açai blend. This amazing fruit mix wasn’t over-the-top sweet and had the right balance of crunch from the granola along with sweetness of the strawberries and tanginess of the blueberries. This is a great place you can visit to cool off and relax, and the free Wi-Fi is just another one of the perks. We would definitely recommend a visit to this artsy café located at Centurion Star Tower, Shop 20, Port Saeed, which is just a hop, skip and jump away from Deira City Centre. *Approximate Price: AED 100 for two people.

The salted caramel pancakes were perfectly fluffy and drizzled with just the right amount of warm salted caramel sauce, leaving them with just the right amount of sweetness. The buttermilk pancakes were surprisingly light and were pleasantly complemented by the caramelised bananas and toasted walnuts, which also added a delightful crunch. Next, we had the pleasure of trying the baked egg boat, an inexplicably stupendous concoction that had our taste buds doing the foxtrot. It was comprised of a homemade brioche bowl stuffed with scrambled eggs and sun-dried tomatoes, topped off with parmesan and served along with cherry tomatoes and rocket leaves with a dash of balsamic. Pure genius. Finally, we tried a cup of Jardin de Merveilles tea, which was light, with airy flavours of peach and apricot blissfully infused into the Sencha green tea. Stomping Grounds is undoubtedly one of the few cafes that makes you feel right at home. It’s the ideal café for teenagers to chill and have a good laugh at with friends, or even hang out with the family. *Approximate Price: AED 75 for two people. by ABIRAAHMI SHANKAR, ANANYA SARAF AND NOAH FRANCO photos and videos: NOAH FRANCO

WHAT'S GOING ON?

Inside China's 'Mosquito Factory' Fighting Zika And Dengue

Snapchat Unveils Strange Vending Machine For Its Sunglasses

Forget IDs. You Only Need A Selfie To Enter This Tourist Destination

Zhiyong Xi is a man on a mission. He wants to rid China—and potentially the world—of mosquitoes, specifically the ones that carry devastating diseases like zika and dengue. And he's doing it in the classic style of good versus evil. "We're building good mosquitoes that can help us fight the bad ones," the entomologist said in his 3,500-square-foot laboratory in Guangzhou, China.

Snapchat unveiled a new line of funky sunglasses with a built-in wireless video camera in September, marking its first big move from apps to hardware. At the same time, the company renamed itself Snap Inc. Now those glasses, called Spectacles, are finally going on sale for $129.99, but there's a catch. The company is only selling the glasses from unusual anthropomorphic vending machines called Snapbots, which look more than a little bit like Minions.

You don't need to bring a ticket, get your hand stamped or flash a driver's licence for admission to one tourist destination in China. All visitors need is something they can't lose—their face. Baidu, a Chinese tech company, began testing facial recognition technology last week in Wuzhen, a historic town with classic canals and architecture. The area receives millions of visitors each year.

Scientists To Create Fabric That Generates Electricity

Sawdust Reinvented Into Super Sponge For Oil Spills

Elon Musk Joins Donald Trump’s Team Of Advisories

Scientists at Stanford University and the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have discovered a way to use diamondoids, the smallest possible bits of diamond, to assemble atoms into the thinnest possible electrical wires, just three atoms wide. By grabbing various types of atoms and putting them together, LEGO-style, the new technique could potentially be used to build tiny wires for a wide range of applications, including fabrics that generate electricity, optoelectronic devices that employ both electricity and light, and superconducting materials that conduct electricity without any loss.

Lowly sawdust, the waste that’s sometimes tossed onto home garage floors to soak up oil spilt by amateur mechanics, could receive some newfound respect. Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have chemically modified sawdust to make it exceptionally oil-attracting and buoyant—characteristics that are ideally suited for cleaning oil spills in the icy, turbulent waters of the Arctic. The non-toxic material absorbs up to five times its weight in oil and stays afloat for at least four months. Containing oil spills in cold waters is especially tricky, as bobbing ice chunks push oil below the water’s surface, making it difficult to collect.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has joined the business advisory team for US President-elect Donald Trump, along with Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. After being named to Trump’s Strategic and Policy Forum, they joined him for a meeting in New York that included more than a dozen tech CEO giants of Silicon Valley offering input on a variety of topics. The conference attendees discussed, among other things, the repatriation of American profits kept overseas by prohibitive tax rates; improving America’s cybersecurity and infrastructure; the need for greater vocational education opportunities; and—most importantly—creating more jobs for American workers.

Horoscope

CAPRICORN 21 December — 20 January

Capricorn-born people are the most determined of the entire Zodiac. The most prominent qualities of the Goats, as they are called, are that they are ambitious, conservative, determined, practical and helpful. They make good team leaders and organisers, because of their single-minded focus on their work, sense of responsibility and sincerity. They are perceived by people around them to be workaholics, unemotional and detached. Sometimes their negative qualities—suspicious, resentful, inhibited, pessimistic and stubborn—are seen clearly, but deep inside the Goat has a humble heart.
