Hello, Hello! Welcome to the second month of 2017! This month we are continuing our health goals with the help of the strong, powerful and vigorous Justin Garcia. I met Justin in January 2017, when our team went to Gravity Calisthenics Gym for a corporate wellness programme, where he was in charge of the Parkour segment. That is where I had a first-hand experience in how Justin works with other people. He was tough but fair, fun yet challenging, observant while encouraging, all at the young age of twenty-three. That was when I knew that he would be a perfect fit for the cover of one8one magazine. We really hope that you enjoy reading and watching his interview, as he is truly inspiring and someone worth knowing about. In addition, we also have a lot of articles revolving around the theme of getting outside of your comfort zone. A couple of must-reads include the travel article about South Africa, showcasing this beautiful, warm country, and a great guide on what to look out for in a DSLR camera. This February, make sure you challenge yourself and take time to do fun and unique activities that will help enrich your life. Be loud and proud, and live in the moment!

How To Buy A DSLR Camera

HOW TO BUY A

DSLR CAMERA

First things first. DSLR stands for digital single-lens reflex, which sounds complicated, but really means a high-performance camera that was traditionally used by professionals. However, increasingly photography enthusiasts are jumping on the DSLR wagon thanks to enhanced user-friendly technology. With so many choices available in the market today, deciding which one to choose can be mind boggling. With that in mind, Canon Middle East has put together a guide on what to look for when buying a DSLR.

see it. scan it. get it.

1. PRICE A good place to start when thinking about buying a DSLR is the price. DSLR cameras are more affordable nowadays with brands offering a diverse range, from great starter DSLRs for the enthusiastic amateur to the highly professional camera by the EOS range. Another factor to consider when purchasing a DSLR is the cost involved for additional equipment such as lenses, batteries, memory cards and filters. Lenses: These can be tailored to your photographic requirements. For example, if you are interested in landscape photography you will need a wide-angle lens, while a telephoto lens is required for those looking to take wildlife or sports shots. Batteries: All models will come with one battery, but if you are travelling it’s a good idea to always carry a spare one. Memory Cards: Most serious photographers upgrade their memory cards to one that holds at least a 1-gigabyte, as this allows them to take more hi-resolution images before needing to delete and free up space. Filters: Filters can be used to manipulate the light that enters the camera, which can be very useful for creating effects, such as soft-lighting or warmer colours.

2. WHAT WILL YOU USE IT FOR? When you head to a camera store to purchase any type of DSLR camera the first thing most sales people will ask you is what type of photography you want to do. It is well worth asking yourself this question up front, as it will help you think through the type of features and accessories you’ll need. Whether you’re a beginner, semi-professional or a professional photographer, Canon’s EOS range has a wide variety of cameras to offer with basic features and functions that are user-friendly for amateurs, and highly professional features for those that need more of a challenge.

3. RESOLUTION ‘How many megapixels does it have’ is a question that is often one of the first to be asked about a new camera. Megapixels come into play as you consider how you’ll use your images. If you’re looking to print enlargements then more megapixels can be good, however if you’re just going to print the photos in small sizes or use them for e-mailing friends then they’re not so crucial.

4. ADDED VALUE FEATURES DSLRs can offer a wide array of value-added features, so it is always worth remembering what you hope to get out of your photography before investing in additional technology add ons.

Burst Mode: This is the ability to shoot a burst of images by just holding down the shutter release, which is great for sports and action photography. DSLRs vary both in the number of frames that they can shoot per second, as well as how many images they can shoot in a single burst. Maximum Shutter Speed: Most DSLRs will have a decent range of speeds available, but some will have impressive top speeds, which are very useful for those into sports or action photography. ISO Ratings: A camera’s ISO function sets the light sensitivity of the camera’s image sensor. A lower ISO setting is used when capturing overly bright scenes, as it reduces the light sensitivity of the image sensor. This is ideal when shooting at the beach, on a ski slope, or under the midday sun. A higher ISO setting is often used when shooting under dimmer conditions, such as on cloudy days, or indoors, as it increases the light sensitivity of the image sensor. LCD Size: This feature can be important when you wish to review your pictures. The larger the LCD, the easier it will be to view your pictures after you take them and choose which ones you want to keep. Flash: Once upon a time all photographers were tied to the light source available to them, but with ongoing flash development, photographers are able to bring a portable light with them, improving both range and overall photographic results.

YouthSpeak Movement

YOUTHSPEAK MOVEMENT

Ban Ki Moon, ex-UN Secretary General said: “Ours is the first generation with the potential to end poverty – and the last to act to avoid the worst effects of climate change.” With technology and time moving so fast, this generation has transformed a lot in a short amount of time. Today, technology is helping people reach out to the world with their opinions on many different platforms, and what makes this even crazier is the fact that our voices reach everyone in a matter of seconds. Today, the world is populated with 1.8 billion young people. We’re part of the generation that is educated and powerful, but as Uncle Ben said to Tony Parker, “With great power comes greater responsibility.” As technology is trying to find ways to get the world even more connected, now with IoT, our generation is also faced with many socioeconomic and global challenges that need to be tackled. It’s high time that we use our powerful, educated minds to find creative and innovative solutions to tackle these issues. After addressing the challenge, the next obvious step is to find a meaningful and impactful solution. This is our world, and we should come together to tackle problems together, not only you and us, but also the decision makers at organisations. If we can affect the decision makers, then the outcome will definitely be different. Now that we have addressed the issue and found the solution, the next thing is to reflect on how we can achieve this. How do we get our generation to come together and make a difference in their own lives and the world around them? “YouthSpeak was born out of a simple idea. What if we could harness the collective power of a global youth voice and their opinions, and discover what challenges they faced today in reaching their maximum potential? And from there, we can take their opinions to decision makers and collaborate with them on how to transform society and make it easier and more effective in developing young people. At the same time, we can use the youth opinion to empower our own generation and raise awareness of what we care about and how we can take action.”

see it. scan it. get it.

The youth of today is the future of tomorrow. Our mission is to provide a platform for the youth where they can turn their voice into actions. AIESEC in the UAE is proud to bring YouthSpeak to the country for the very first time. YouthSpeak consists of three phases, YS Survey, YS Insights, and YS Forum. Through the YouthSpeak Survey, we will be able to understand what challenges generation Y or millennials face in reaching their full potential. The YouthSpeak Insights is a comprehensive report of the survey conducted, helping find solutions for the problems together. The YouthSpeak Forum is a space for young people to discuss relevant issues that the youth face in the region in an inclusive way, bringing together many stakeholders, ranging from students to businesses, and trying to find solutions to challenging problems as a unified team. We want to hear your voice, so speak up and take the lead! We invite you to take the survey as the first step!

YOUTHSPEAK MOVEMENT UAE YouthSpeak is a global youth movement powered by AIESEC, to empower young people to take action on world issues. The movement is centered around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were released by the UN in 2015 (Replacing the previous Millenium Development Goals) and are targeted to be accomplished by 2030.

THE YOUTHSPEAK SURVEY The initial phase of the YouthSpeak process, an especially important one, is the YouthSpeak Survey, run by AIESEC. It’s a global insight survey created by youth for youth, to provide a platform for them to voice their opinions and generate action, which will serve UAE’s youth. The survey aims to understand what youth care about and how they would like to contribute in implementing the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals as well as the issues they consider important. For AIESEC, the survey is a movement aimed to create awareness and generate actions. To participate in the survey and represent the youth in UAE, please go to the link and make sure you choose your ‘Place of Birth’ and ‘Place of Residence’ as United Arab Emirates in the survey so the results count for the country globally. Self Development

BEING ALONE VS

BEING LONELY My ideal Friday afternoon is waking up by 10am and getting ready to head out to the farmers’ market in Business Bay, where I get my weekly groceries. I then indulge in a great cup of coffee and a sandwich from Baker and Spice. I enjoy doing these things by myself, as spending time alone is pretty high up on my list of priorities. I guess I would describe myself as an introvert who enjoys spending time alone, but I understand that’s not for everyone. I know so many people that dread spending any time by themselves let alone an entire day. That is why I hope to make you realise the difference between being alone and being lonely. As a person who genuinely enjoys spending time alone, I’ve come up with some really great reasons why you should embrace this time by yourself.

see it. scan it. get it.

1. DO SOMETHING FUN OR PRODUCTIVE We all have those self-improvement goals that we have been hanging onto for the longest time, such as attending that first yoga class, enjoying a painting or cooking class, or using that spa voucher that was gifted to you on your birthday. Whether you’re meeting new people in a hot sweaty yoga room or simply doing something that’s good for your well-being, make sure to have fun and really embrace this time by yourself. This way when you think of alone time you automatically think of happy, fun and exciting thoughts as compared to being bored or even lonely.

2. DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE SELFISH Sometimes it’s okay to put yourself first and think about what you should do for yourself. By putting yourself first you don’t have to compromise on what to do and the decision is always yours. This is a great way to realise that you can actually do things by yourself, be independent and enjoy life just as much as you would in a big group of friends. For some of us it may be challenging initially, but in the long run, it is definitely worth it.

3. BE PRESENT AND LIVE RIGHT NOW

all the other cool things in your life. Learn to be in the moment and stop scrolling through Instagram during your lunch break!

4. INDULGE IN THINGS THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY Alone time can be perfect for indulging in all your favourite TV shows, catching up on your books, doodling away or even starting that blog you have been thinking about since the start of the New Year. This is the time to do all the things that you love and wish to do, without having to worry about what anyone else wants or thinks.

5. DO SOMETHING OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE Putting yourself out there is hard, challenging, scary and, yes, weird! But those are just the initial five seconds you feel when you start out. When you push past all these feelings and actually let go of all your insecurities and doubts you learn to just experience the moment and all that it has to offer. I would suggest something as simple as going to a coffee shop and reading a book, or going to Jam Jar to paint. Stop worrying about what other people will think and just do want you want to do. by BHARGAVI NAGRECHA

As millennials, we constantly face the struggle of not being able to be away from our phone or falling victim to FOMO. That’s why you should always make a conscious effort to unplug from technology and just see how much time and space you have for

20 Selfie

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF SELFIE TAKERS! Everyone from Miley Cyrus to Elon Musk is guilty of taking a selfie or two and now researchers at Brigham Young University have published a study on how there are three different types of selfie-takers in the world. The study outlined three distinct types of people - communicators, autobiographers and self-publicists - and this shows us the reason behind the selfies they posted, and why they posted them.

COMMUNICATORS Communicators share selfies as a way to connect with and encourage discussions with their followers. One of the best communicators out their has to Leonardo DiCaprio who is a massive environmentalist and loves to lead conversations about how we treat the earth.

see it. scan it. get it.

AUTOBIOGRAPHERS These guys use their selfies as a tool to document their entire lives, and capture all their significant moments and memories. The study describes autobiographers as people who want to share their photos in the public realm so that others may see them, but they aren’t necessarily seeking any of the feedback or engagement that communicators are. A great example would be the blogger and YouTuber Camila Coelho who regularly documents selfies of her daily activities, outfits, meals, workouts and travels.

SELF-PUBLICISTS People commonly think of selfie takers as egotistical and full of themselves, however, self-publicists form the smallest group out of the three types of selfie takers. These are people that genuinely LOVE documenting their entire lives on social media, so that they can present themselves in a positive and relatable way. We automatically think of Kylie Jenner for all the obvious reasons.

Dine With Sally Sally Saeed: Food Critic

Sally Saeed is a food and travel fanatic who has been travelling and exploring food at its best for the past five years. After all her travels Sally ended up in Dubai and since has been experiencing all the gastronomic flavours and cuisines that the UAE has to offer. Through her blog and Instagram account, she shares her stories, tips and photos from her adventures around the world. You can easily find snaps overlooking a gorgeous beach or Sally eating at Michelin star restaurants. We had the opportunity to speak to Sally before she jetted off on her next adventure.

How did you end up starting a food blog? When I moved from Jordan to Dubai I used to live in DIFC, which was and still is a major hub for the best restaurants and that’s where I started indulging one plate at a time. I started taking visitors from my hometown of Amman out for meals and I started documenting it on my personal account until one day a friend shared a post stating that she was #diningwithsally. That day #dinewithsally was born and I have never looked back since. How did you promote yourself initially? Was it through Instagram? I started my food journey on my personal account on Instagram and then I created @dinewithsally as an official page on Instagram. What is the weirdest thing you have tasted? I once tried a French vegan cheese platter that was made entirely of nuts and lots of herbs. Obviously, there was no real cheese in it and it was unusual to say the least!

Are there any flavours that you were surprised made sense? Charcoal and Matcha! What software, filters, and equipment do you use to get your pictures perfect? I use my LG5 phone as it’s perfect for capturing images of food without any filters. In addition to my phone, I also use my Nikon Professional Camera. The one thing I do not use is my phone’s flash and I always ensure to carry my manual flash for night photos. What do you look for when you go to a new restaurant? I always look for signature dishes or items done differently on the menu.

OUTSTANDING HIGH OCTANE FINALS AT SHARJAH SPORTS DESERT FESTIVAL 2017 Some of the most successful and experienced desert and safari motorsports competitors from across three continents rounded off the first ever Sharjah Sports Desert Festival 2017 (SSDF) at Al Badayer desert with a series of intense off-road battles to take the inaugural titles of ‘Desert Heroes’. In what organisers described as a great addition to the UAE sporting calendar, SSDF 2017, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, was themed ‘Become a Desert Hero’ and the winners in each of the four categories, UTVs, ATVs and MX1 and MX2 motorcross bikes, proved worthy of the titles. The time trials finals for UTVs, which are built for the right combination of low weight and high speed, was won by Emirati racer Majid Al Miza, who came through a set of tough qualifiers to clinch first place. In the ATV class, Obaid Al Kitby, also from the UAE, was the eventual winner. In the two quad bike categories, which tested the stamina of both man and machine, Ross James Rutherford won the MX1 class course and Matthew Burrows claimed victory in MX2, beating stiff competition from international rivals. Winners of the three categories each received AED 10,000, second places were awarded AED 5,000 and those in third place won AED 3,000.

His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Media Corporation, said the event had added great value in enhancing Sharjah’s reputation as a prime destination for sporting excellence: “The quality of the event and the calibre of the participants is an excellent example of how Sharjah is committed to providing not only the facilities, but also the expertise on delivering world class sports. “As well as the people of Sharjah who benefit from these events, this sends a clear message to the international sporting community that we are ready, willing and able to host world class competitions.” With a racetrack designed by Emirati motocross and MX rally champion Mohammed Al Balooshi, SSDF 2017 was the first-of-its-kind desert off-roading experience in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates. Al Balooshi was crowned Tunisia Arab Champion for the second year in a row in 2010 and also led the Red Bull ‘Under My Wings’ project in the UAE. He was the first Emirati to participate in the Dakar Rally, and was responsible for monitoring the racing events to ensure the contestants adhered to the festival’s rules and regulations. Strategically located in Sharjah, Al Badayer Desert is one of the UAE’s most important winter desert destinations, renowned for its dunes and the beauty of its desert nature. The location attracts outdoor adventurers who make the most of its rugged environment to go camping, take safari trips and enjoy challenging off-road driving.

Pet Care

TEN QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE BUYING A NEW

PUPPY The UAE has recently introduced a new legislation to deter unscrupulous breeders from importing underage puppies into the UAE. This is because the country is currently over burdened with a bunch of perfectly healthy animals that are still patiently waiting for a forever home. Even though it is better to adopt rather than buy an animal, the simple fact is that there will always be a solid market for those who wish to choose their pets and prefer the option of buying. As such, Dr. Sara Elliott of British Veterinary Hospital shares ten key questions to ask when you’re thinking of making one of the biggest purchasing decisions of your life.

see it. scan it. get it.

1. Where are the papers? Ask to see the parents of the puppy, check any pedigree certificates if available and have a look at the parents within their home environment.

4. How healthy are the other animals? Check to see the health of the other puppies in the same litter and any other animals living in the same place. You do not want your new puppy exposed to sick animals in its infancy.

2. How old is the pup? The dog needs to be at least 16 weeks old before it is socialised enough to be taken away from its parents.

5. Any other animal exposure? What other animals has your puppy been in contact with? This is important information to give the puppy’s new vet.

3. How reputable is the breeder? Your point of sale should be a licensed pet shop or a breeder registered with the Municipality.

6. What vaccinations have been done? Always demand a full inventory of the vaccinations that have already been given.

7. Can a vet examine the puppy? If possible, have your new pet checked out by a licensed veterinarian before you purchase them.

8. Who is the original vet? Ask for the contact details of the veterinary centre of your pup and its parents. In most cases you will need the permission of the breeder if they have been imported.

9. Is the puppy friendly? This is one of the most important reasons for adoption, so bring along your family to ensure the pet interacts well and the decision is made as a group.

10. Did the puppy choose you? It can be a good sign if you let your pet choose you. Often you will know as soon as you meet the pups which one you will be taking home, because he or she will gravitate towards you.

30 Cars

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TAKING CARE OF YOUR CAR Let’s just be honest, taking care of your car is hard, with a ton of things to understand and maintain. However, if you don’t look after your car properly, its lifespan will shorten and you may find yourself without a ride. But don’t worry, we have your back. Here’s all you need to know about your car.

KEEPING THE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR CLEAN Get your car cleaned from the inside out, so that everything is sanitary, as this keeps its resale value high. Also, everyone can easily inside and you don’t want to be known as ‘that person with the filthy car’! The cost of not keeping your car clean is high and can result in attracting dirt and grime that can eventually damage your interiors and exteriors. Don’t over accessorise your dashboard with rugs, toys and charms, as they can block your visibility and attract more dust. Make a budget for your car to get it washed and waxed at least twice a month. The average cost of cleaning your car at any gas stations in the UAE is about AED 50/-.

see it. scan it. get it.

CHANGING FLUIDS AND FILTERS

TIRES

Being aware of when to change different fluids and filters is probably the most important part of taking care of your car. Make sure you are getting the right fluids put into your car, and know if your car can go to any service station or has to be taken to your dealer. Your car should have up to four filters: in-cabin air filter, engine/oil filter, fuel filters and transmission filters. These should be changed regularly to keep particles from damaging important parts. If your car doesn’t have fresh oil, dirt will build up and eventually kill your engine, which will cost you thousands of dirhams.

Along with getting a regular oil change, you should also ask to get your tires rotated at the same time. Getting your tires rotated ensures even tire wear and helps to extend their lifespan. Tire pressure goes hand in hand with rotation as well. Luckily most cars have indicators to let you know when something is wrong. Whenever you see your tire pressure light come on, you should check the air pressure of all four tires immediately. Not checking will result in flat tires, blowouts, or the tires becoming so worn down that you’ll need to buy new ones.

BRAKES

PREPARING FOR THE WEATHER

INVEST IN CAR INSURANCE

Connected to your tires are your brakes. If you feel your car taking longer to stop, your brakes are getting lower and lower when pressed, or you hear the rotors being scraped against each other, it’s time to get new brake pads. You should have them inspected every 25,00050,000 miles, but if anything feels or sounds off take your car to get serviced ASAP. You don’t want to put this off and have a car accident happen as a result.

During the summer heat, parking in the shade, using window shades and opening the sunroof can stop your car from getting too hot. You can also keep your engine’s temperature balanced by taking note of the cooling system.

You might consider yourself the best driver in the world, but all it takes is one bad driver to leave you and your car out of action for a long time. Good car insurance will cover you for accidents and repairs, while cheap insurance may not cover all the harm to you, your car, or to other person’s property. Good insurance can be expensive, but it’s ultimately worth it as you will get peace of mind that everything is covered if anything happens.

JUSTIN GARCIA UAE’s Very Own Superman Don’t change who you are. Especially in the fitness industry everybody wants to be or look like somebody else.

Scan to watch video

see it. scan it. get it.

Twenty Three-year-old Justin Garcia has come a long way from his home of California, USA. At this age, he is already teaching and training people in Calisthenics, which is a creative training that uses your bodyweight while combining elements of street workout, parkour, gymnastics, freerunning and tricking. Our team had the opportunity to catch up with Justin to learn about how he started, and his journey from beginning to end.

What got you started in Calisthenics? I found a couple of really cool videos on YouTube that made me want to do handstands, and that’s how it all started for me.

What one or two things do you currently do in your training that are keys to your success? I make it a point to stretch and focus a lot on foundational work that basically includes warm ups, so that I don’t get injured.

How do you set your goals? My goals work around what I am currently working towards. Most of them tend to be short term goals rather than focusing on what I want to achieve in say three years. I don’t plan too much into the future, as I tend to forget my plans, so I stick to goals that are about two weeks long at the most. This way I can be held accountable if I don’t acheive them. What is your diet like? If my clients are reading this I eat clean all the time, but if real people are reading this I ate McDonald’s for breakfast this morning, I just drank a Redbull, and I had Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner last night! (laughing). Is there something you don’t eat or refrain from eating? Even though I am half Mexican, I cannot eat spicy food to save my life! Even if I get a small jalapeno in my meal or even if there was a one sitting on my plate, I will vomit. It’s really sad!

Scan to follow

What is your biggest challenge, and what do you do to manage this challenge? My biggest challenge was when I had initially started out and no one around me supported me. I was initially 45 kilos which is roughly about 100 pounds and when I told the people around me that I wanted to be a professional fitness trainer, my family, friends and almost everyone said I was wasting my time. That was the biggest obstacle I’ve ever faced. But now they see that I have made it and what I have become, I have their support and encouragement.

What 1-2 things do you do that differentiates you from other athletes/ trainers? I have a firm belief that anything you do to your body can be used in a sport. I am one of the few people that integrates flexibility, gymnastics and aerial movements into training. A lot of people get stuck in the mould of what they see on YouTube, whereas I try to break that mould and be completely unique.

36

Cover Story

Scan to watch video

Do you have any recommended resources to share (books, seminars, websites, coaches)? If you are interested in what I do, I would recommend the World Calisthenics Organisation, as they have a comprehensive guide of workshops, which really breaks down all the basic movements and how to set up your own programme. I started out taking that course and now I am fortunate enough to be able to teach it to others, which helps me create more teachers for the future.

A lot of people get stuck in the mould from what they see on YouTube

What was the best advice you were ever given? Don’t change who you are, especially in the fitness industry where everybody wants to be or look like somebody else. What a lot of people don’t realise is that we are all completely unique and by trying to be like someone else you are just making the world lose another person.

So, where do you draw your inspiration from? A lot of the time when I got injured or lost a competition, I would want to give up. When I had initially started my grandmother was my only supporter and this was the time that everyone was telling me that I was wasting my time and that I should go to college instead. My grandmother would sit by the table and count how many push-ups I was doing, supporting me the whole time. After my first year of training, my grandmother sadly passed away and now I do this all for her. I even have a tattoo on my chest that reminds me of her and helps me to continue on my path regardless of whatever is going on in my life. I am not doing this for me anymore, but instead continue doing this to help other people achieve their goals and dreams.

see it. scan it. get it.

When you start working out what exactly do you do? The first thing I do is find my source of energy. I usually work out at the end of the day after my classes, and after which I am ready to go to bed. I find my source of energy, whether it comes from a pre-workout drink or even just heavy metal music blasting into my ears. From there I start stretching and warming up. I stretch my split, my wrists, do a few handstands and from there just get straight into it and go crazy.

Scan to watch video

Tell us about your experience at the Calisthenics Team World Cup? In 2015, three of my friends and I from Los Angeles went to Bahrain to compete in the Calisthenics World Cup. This was the first team cup of our sport, as it is usually one-on-one style, but this was you representing your country as a team within the competition. We were chosen from the whole of the USA to compete and honestly we didn’t expect to go very far, especially when we had to go against the favourites to win in the first round. To our surprise, we beat the front runners and we moved onto the finals, getting third place overall, losing by just one point. We were upset, but super excited as we never thought we would make it that far!

Do you have any advice for someone who is just starting out? Always stretch! I have been doing this for over four years and a lot of the guys that I hang out and train with all have one big regret, and that is when we all started we didn’t stretch enough. We just did a quick warm-up and then jumped on the bars, and because of that most of us got injured within the first six months. Some of us even tore a couple of muscles. I know a couple of people who within the first two years managed to tear their entire bicep muscles off and now they cannot train at all. That is why I urge people to take the time to stretch and don’t do something just because your ego wants you to. Always make sure that your body is ready before you try to do something crazy.

Instagram: @justinshape How do you start of your personal training session with a new client? So there is a big misconception that you have to be fit to start doing callisthenics, as it does look pretty nerve-wracking to watch people doing flips, handstands, and hanging from their necks when you can only just about do a pushup! There are a thousand levels you need to go through before you get to that standard, and this is something that people don’t see. I like to evaluate how many pushups a client can do, what their form looks like, if they can do jump squats, pull ups, hang etc. By assessing all these little areas I gauge what needs to be worked on to meet certain goals and criteria. Everything depends on the individual client.

Thrill Zone

THRILL ZONE

Paintball, Lasers and an Epic Time A smoky haze. Flashing lights. Screaming sirens. An army of determined teenagers. Just a small handheld laser gun to get us through it all. Our experience at the Thrill Zone’s Laser Tag arena elicited a whirlwind of emotions in us ranging from terror to euphoria. At first, the idea of going into a dark room and shooting lasers at enemies seemed quite ludicrous. However, the moment we strapped on the embedded jackets and got our hands on the flashing guns, everything suddenly felt real. A few seconds after we were directed to our ‘base’, the lights went out and our senses kicked into overdrive. Our hearts thumped in anticipation and adrenaline coursed through our veins as our eyes adjusted to the dark and now, as sharp as eagles’ eyes, scanned for the slightest movement of the enemy. Due to the short briefing we had received beforehand, we were aware that our aim was to attack and get a clear shot at the enemy base, fending off competitors by shooting lasers at sensors on their armour vests, located on their shoulders, abdomen and back and disabling their guns for a few seconds while we quickly forged ahead. Infiltrating the enemy base to shoot the heavily guarded sensor was like embarking on a suicide mission. However, the ultimate reward of a thousand points per shot made the impending risk worth it.

Getting to the base wasn’t only a matter of going in solo, guns blazing. We had to move as a coordinated machine, pushing through the enemy’s final line of defence, relentlessly pursuing that coveted shot that could win us the game. Now, there were several ways to go about winning - your team could assume a formation and hold it throughout the game or you could stealthily advance forward. If you were a bit more daring, you could try crawling in the dark and catching the opponent unaware. The feeling of satisfaction as you and your friends finally pushed through to the enemy base, the heart-wrenching sound of a fellow comrade calling for help, the bubbling laughter that arose when you bumped into your teammates in the darkall culminated into an exciting, action-packed experience. The 15 minutes we spent in the arena felt way longer than it was and as we came out, drenched in sweat, we had seen more than mere shrieks and laser beams. It witnessed a wealth of learning - of teamwork and strategy, of stealth and undeterred perseverance. At the end of the game, we rejoiced, not only for the winners, but also for the little tumultuous moments that built up to an incredible adventure. Our experience at Thrill Zone was truly remarkable - so much so that our next visit is already pencilled into our schedules! Kulfilicious: Indian Ice Cream Done Right!

Restaurant Review

If you’re from the Indian subcontinent then you must have had the pleasure of eating an Indian ice-cream called a Kulfi. Kulfilicious is the ideal place for you to experience the wonders of Indian ice cream and you get to try them in almost every single flavour. Whether you like a nutty, fruity, or beverage inspired flavour you can enjoy it all at this quirky, fun place, with an Indian street like atmosphere. The staff is also more than happy to help you understand and figure out what you may like. It is the first of its kind with an extensive menu – their signature items are, of course, the Kulfis, Faloodas (milkshakes with a bunch of cool stuff inside) and Golas (crushed ice lollies). There are a plethora of choices in the menu which are full of puns and are translated into English too. We started off with the traditional Malai Kulfi, which was spectacular. The creamy texture of the Rabri, which is a thick condensed milk, along with the chilled, slightly melted Malai Kulfi pieces tasted just perfect. Usually one thinks that Indian sweets are filled with sugar, but this Kulfi wasn’t too sweet, which made it really unique. Moving on to the Royal Kulfi Falooda – the perfect combination of three flavours of Kulfi with Rabri, Rose Syrup, Vermicelli, Jelly and Nuts. This was very nice sincethe unique toppings added a twist to the creamy texture. But, watch out, the quantity was massive – the small size is enough for 2 people!

The Melting Pot is the Spot for Chocolate Lovers A feeling of warmth rushed through them as soon as they gulped down a spoon of loveliness topped with pieces of caramel and nuts in a pool of deep chocolate. How awesome does that sound? Can you imagine it? Well, it happened! On a fine Tuesday morning, four chocolate lovers set out on a journey to visit The Melting Pot in Dubai. Little did we know, that we were up for a real treat! As we walked into The Melting Pot, we were welcomed by some of the staff members who directed us to a table flanked by bright sofas. A heater surmounted by a steel bowl sat atop the table. The long, elegant cutlery near every seat was of different colours wrapped up in a black cloth. The ambience was quite interesting as well. It had artificial plants and modern designs to give it a unique set up with soft music playing in the background to match the place. The menu presented an exciting range of variations of two main dishes; the chocolate and cheese fondues. We decided to take the plunge and try the signature dishes; The Caramel Nut, which consisted of warm melted milk chocolate adorned with small bits of caramel nut, and The Original, which was a rich blend of pure dark, white and milk chocolate. To dip in the two bowls of chocolatey goodness, we were presented with a small platter of dates, pound cake, chocolate brownies, Oreo covered marshmallows and fruits like strawberries, bananas and pineapples. Talking about it makes our mouth water all over again! The entire experience was nothing short of amazing. It was, in a nutshell, the perfect blend of courteous staff, a soothing ambience, extensive choice and, of course, the perfect dessert! Price: AED 50/- for two people Location: BoxPark, Dubai.

The interiors were that of an Indian street, heavily inspired by a pop decor with bright colours, an auto rickshaw, kites stuck on the electricity cables, and lights in the shape of milk cans. The walls were intricately painted in white along with the blue night sky. This was a really cool hidden dessert parlour with great Kulfis and we will be sure to revisit this place very soon. Ice Cream Flavours

THE WEIRDEST, CRAZIEST, & COOLEST

ICE CREAM FLAVOURS!

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream! Hopefully, you still like ice-cream after we are done introducing you to the weirdest and craziest flavours popular around the world.

Cardamom Black Pepper Ice Cream This is an amazing pairing of two really cool spices, leaving a slight punch at the end, firstly from the cardamom and secondly from the black pepper. You may note a slight ginger lemon accent within the flavour profile as well.

Pineapple Cilantro Ice Cream The sour sweetness of pineapple meets the crisp, grassy notes of the cilantro, which end up creating the ultimate fresh summer flavour.

Sweet Corn Ice Cream Corn on the cob might just be the best thing ever but imagine the sweet and buttery flavours in a frozen dessert. That sounds pretty spectacular.

Roasted Beets Ice Cream Roasted beets brings out the smoky sweet flavour of the beets, while adding thick, tangy goat’s cheese to the mix gives you something that is unusually delicious!

Wasabi Ice Cream Even though we usually just eat wasabi with sushi, the Japanese have created a really cool tangy flavour of ice cream by adding in this green tingling goodness. Be ready to have your mind blown!

Yam Ice Cream Yams are native to the Philippines so when they decided to create this bright purple treat with vanilla beans, we knew we would be left with something that tastes as good as it looks.

Garlic Ice Cream This is the ideal scoop for when you go out for steak, as the garlic will definitely complement the taste of the meat. The ice cream is known to also have a touch of honey, which brings out the garlic’s natural sweetness.

Afghan Girls Fight Prejudice by Practising Martial Arts

Strangers Give $100K to Boy With Rare Skin Disease

IKEA to Start Selling Homemade Textiles by Refugees

Afghani teens face oppression and prejudice every day, but now they’re fighting back with martial arts. The Shaolin Wushu Club of Kabul has decided to teach young females the art of Wushu; a Chinese sport derived from Kung Fu. The students, ranging in age from 13 to 20, gain benefits beyond just self-defense – the classes also turn vulnerable youths into young adults with solid self-esteem.

John Hudson Dilgen can’t live the normal life of a 14-year-old boy due to a rare skin disease. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, however, he may be able to come closer than ever before. Epidermolysis Bullosa is a condition that makes John’s skin so fragile, the slightest movements cause it to blister and tear. His parents discovered the Microsilk Tub – a bathtub that oxygenates the water with microbubbles that are able to enter fractures in the skin and carry out impurities without the need for chemicals. So the family created a GoFundMe page to finance the expansion of the bathroom to house the special tub with a goal of $40,000. Within a week, strangers had donated over $100,000.

Our beloved Swedish furniture company plans to start selling textiles made by refugees, providing over 200 jobs for displaced women by 2019. The workers will mostly be Syrian refugee women currently sheltered in Jordan. IKEA is working with local women’s organisations to ensure flexible working hours to accommodate employees supporting their families. The products will be sold locally throughout Middle Eastern markets.

Computer Allows Paralysed Patients to Communicate

Simple Breath Test Could Save Millions of People From Cancer

These Logs of Coffee Grounds Are a Lifeline for Encamped Refugees

A computer interface that can decipher the thoughts of people who are unable to communicate could revolutionise the lives of those living with a completely lockedin syndrome, according to a new paper. Counter to expectations, the participants in the study reported being “happy, despite their extreme condition. Patients suffering from complete paralysis, but with preserved awareness, cognition, and eye movements and blinking are classified as having locked-in syndrome. If eye movements are also lost, the condition is referred to as a completely locked-in syndrome. A non-invasive brain-computer interface detected their responses by measuring changes in blood oxygen levels in the brain.

A test that measures the levels of five chemicals in the breath has shown promising results for the detection of cancers of the oesophagus and stomach. Together, stomach and oesophageal cancer account for around 1.4 million new cancer diagnoses each year worldwide. Both tend to be diagnosed late, because the symptoms are ambiguous, meaning the five-year survival rate for these two types of cancer is only 15%. The new research, involving more than 300 patients, showed that the test could diagnose cancer with an overall accuracy of 85%.

Instead of throwing out the grounds leftover from morning pots of coffee, students at the University of Toronto are turning them into a valuable resource for refugees overseas. Women and children in refugee camps reportedly perform 90% of their cooking using firewood. Family members are often put in danger when leaving the camp to gather more firewood, and it can be a strenuous, long endeavour. Canadian engineering students are hoping to eliminate that risk by with the creation of Moto: a fake flammable log made of sugar, coffee grounds, and paraffin wax that can burn for up to 90 minutes.
