Denis Waitley once said, “Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.” With that thought in mind, in this month’s issue we speak to twenty-two-year-old Bhakti Khubchandani, who is the Founder and Owner of Escape Reality. From a very young age, Bhakti knew that she wanted to make a difference in the world and put a smile on people’s faces. So when she realised what she wanted to do with her life she fearlessly went ahead with her plans. Read her exclusive interview on page 34 and don’t forget to use our app, ‘get it’, to watch exclusive video content. Trust us, it’s amazing! Within this month’s issue, we aim to inspire you to overcome your fears, be it by travelling (pg 28), starting out your first small business venture (pg 34), letting go of a friendship that no longer serves you (pg 18), or simply just believing in yourself and your talents, like Hasan Malik did with his music career (pg 38). Another great article in this month’s issue is a submission received in February, talking about whether we can really justify the cost of space exploration when there is so much we can do within our own planet and for other human beings. I urge you to have a friendly debate with your friends and see what you each think about this topic, as there are many solid points on each side. In any case, challenge yourself, be curious, do something fun, dare to be different and live your best life.

Internships

5 REASONS WHY

INTERNSHIPS

ARE AS IMPORTANT AS YOUR DEGREE Grades are a wonderful representation of intellect, but they are not necessarily a representation of work ethic. Learning what is necessary while in university and then being able to apply that knowledge to the skills needed are what employers want to see. Here are the top five reasons why internships are just as important as your university degree.

by MIRANDA LOUIS

see it. scan it. get it.

CONFIDENCE If you are a very confident individual, this may come across as arrogance if you have no prior on-the-job experience. Internships give you the opportunity to create connections and learn from your mistakes before graduation, which is an added advantage. They will also give you an idea of the pace of the position that you hope to acquire, making sure you are aware of the workload you are taking on and what is expected of you, helping you walk into that first interview standing tall and confident.

EXPERIENCE

RESUME

Through an internship you gain a better understanding of your respective area of study and are able to make the connection between your current studies and how they will apply once you graduate. If you have never worked in a professional atmosphere (and even if you have) sharpening those skills and interacting on a professional level creates the teamwork, communication, and leadership skills employers are looking for.

University is usually the time you start preparing your resume and so it is important that you have some form of experience that pertains to the job you wish to attain upon graduating. With an internship completed, your degree and resume will stand out, showing that you have real life skills to do the job well.

TEST DRIVE CAREER You can now get an internship in nearly any industry, from coaching to managing a zoo. There are abundant opportunities for you to find something that will leave you with a better understanding of your desired career path. A lot of the time you may find that the path that you thought was perfect was not in fact the right one for you, and so by trying it out ahead of time you will be able to save yourself time, money and disappointment in the future.

NETWORKING While interning you not only get to meet people at different levels of the company, but you are also able to connect and interact with them on a professional level. There are constant opportunities to ask questions you would like to know the answer to, as well as make an impression on the right people so that they remember you when the hiring time comes. Those connections and their extended network will be key to finding you a job after graduating, and in some cases the company where you interned will even offer you a permanent position.

Ingredients: 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup almond butter 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup almond milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup old fashioned oats 1/2 cup chocolate chips Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Set this aside. With an electric or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the almond butter and brown sugar. Mix until light and fluffy, for about 2-3 minutes. Mix in the almond milk and vanilla extract, scraping down the sides if necessary. Turn the mixer to low and add the dry ingredients, and mix until just combined, before stirring in the oats and chocolate chips. Roll the cookie dough into tablespoon balls and place on a prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart. Gently flatten the dough balls with the palm of your hand. Bake the cookies for 10 minutes or until they are set and golden brown around the edges. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, before transfering them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

BASIC BANANA ICE CREAM Are you craving ice-cream? Don’t worry we have your back with this super easy, creamy and naturally sweet ice cream that uses just a couple of ingredients. Ingredients: 1 large ripe banana 4 tbsp almond milk Nutella Chocolate syrup or chips Cookie butter Almond butter Frozen Fruits Nuts Directions: Start with the ripe bananas: they should be sweet and soft. Peel and slice them - it doesn’t matter what shape or size the pieces are in, as long as they are chopped up into evenly sized and somewhat small pieces. Put the bananas in an airtight bag and freeze for at least 2 hours. Blend the frozen banana pieces in a small food processor and add some milk to soften them. Keep blending — the banana will look crumbly. It will get smoother but it will still have chunks of banana in it. Scrape down the food processor. Now it’s time to add any mix-ins such as peanut butter, cookie butter, Nutella, fruits or nuts. Transfer to an airtight container and freeze until solid. Serve as regular ice-cream.

CHOCOLATE CHIA SEED PUDDING Try this easy chocolate chia seed pudding that’s super creamy and sweet. Guaranteed to not make you miss the real deal, this healthy version is loaded with nutrients. Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups almond milk 1/3 cup chia seeds 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2-5 tbsp maple or date syrup 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp sea salt 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Directions: Add all the ingredients, except the sweetener, to a blender and towards the end add the sweetener of your choice. Add the mixture to a large bowl and let it rest covered in the fridge overnight or at least 3-5 hours (or until it’s achieved a puddinglike consistency). Serve chilled with your desired toppings, such as fruit, granola or coconut whipped cream.

Self Development

What To Do When You Outgrow A Friendship In true social media sense, we all have a couple of friends that we are still friends with on Facebook, but just don’t talk to anymore in real life. This was someone that was perhaps a very good friend at one point, but then life got in the way. You grew apart and while all the reasons make sense it still hurts whenever you think of them. We’ve compiled nine signs to check if you are outgrowing a friendship, and what to do about it.

1. ONE OF YOU IS ALWAYS “TOO BUSY” . . . The most basic principle of a friendship is talking to each other every so often, so when you have that one friend who you simply can’t reach, this can be problematic and annoying. The best thing to do is to clarify if it’s truly a case of mismatched schedules or a complete lack of interest on their part. Check to see if this person is going through a big shift or dealing with something difficult in their life, because real friends want to stay in touch, talk to you and spend time with you. They make you a priority and at least communicate often. 2. DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT CONNECTING Are you the person that is backing off? Be honest with yourself, and figure out why you are doing so in the first place. Do you even like this person? Do you enjoy being with this friend? When dealing with friendships you are choosing to be with them and are not obligated to spend time with them. Most people look forward to reconnecting with their friends and are usually bummed when plans get cancelled. Think about how you feel when you don’t spend time with this person, do you ever miss them? If yes, that shows you do want to connect with them, but just need to figure out how.

see it. scan it. get it.

6. YOU CAN’T GET PAST A FIGHT We all have arguments and have a difference of opinions but if you just can not seem to move past a fight with your friend then you are left with only two things: either resolve the issue or end the friendship on neutral terms. Most of the time conflicts help to strengthen relationships, but only when both parties are willing to do the work to resolve the issue.

3. YOU CRAVE NEW FRIENDS Sometimes the best thing about outgrowing an old friendship is that it opens up room for new and better connections. Anything can mark a desire for different friendships, it could be that your schedule is all over the place, or you are stressed with work, school or all your extracurricular activities. Whatever it is, look for friendships that can add to your life as compared to simply replacing old friendships. 4. IS THE PAST THE ONLY THING YOU HAVE IN COMMON? Dwelling on the past can be fun but will eventually become boring. Focus on friendships that can change with you, bringing new experiences to the table, instead of ones that hold you back in a certain place and time. Find a friend that can grow with you and with whom you can have conversations about the past, present and future.

7. YOU’VE RUN OUT OF THINGS TO TALK ABOUT If you can’t talk to each other anymore, then chances are high you won’t enjoy spending time together, and without those two things, you can’t really call it a friendship. Move on and call it for good. Sometimes friendships fade after likely having served their purpose, which means you can take whatever you have learned from that and apply it to the rest of the relationships in your life. 8. YOU’RE IN DIFFERENT WAVELENGTHS IN LIFE It’s usually awful when you are on totally different wavelengths of life and the relationship is just not conducive to anything positive and so you start to drift away. Yes, it is hard, but it is a natural part of life. Some friendships come into your life just for a moment to teach you certain things.

by ALEX CLAYTON

5. YOU CONSTANTLY JUDGE OR CRITICISE THEM We’re all guilty of judging or criticising friends at one point or another. In a healthy friendship, you’re emotionally close to another person so it’s normal to find fault with their words or actions once in a while. But when a friendship is no longer working, you may notice that you’re complaining about them 24/7. Move away from toxic friendships that bring out the worst in you, as it doesn’t serve anyone any good.

Space Exploration

SPACE EXPLORATION: IS IT REALLY JUSTIFIED?

Have we really discovered everything about our cosmic neighbourhoods? Whether through human or robotic exploration, should we explore deep into our universe through massive financial and labour funding? Does it show the key answer to the survival of the human race, making it necessary to fund these exploration projects? With global issues such as poverty and civil unrest prevailing across the world, one of the most critically argued questions of the 21st century is whether to fund space exploration projects or not. We hear several notable discoveries by renowned space agencies about obtaining scarce resources on asteroids, Earth-like exoplanets, or even a probable future to human survival with impending global disasters. But to fund such projects requires massive financial funding, labour requirements and technology. However, funding space science and exploration has the potential to provide solutions to the survival of human beings in the future by contributing knowledge to different sciences, promoting the development of useful products and services, and raising economic stability in developing and impoverished nations.

At the most simple level, the history of space exploration has been a major inspiration for younger generations to enter into the field of science, engineering and technology. When the television broadcast of Neil Armstrong first setting foot on the Moon’s surface aired, the youth and adults alike, were completely in awe of the newly marked pinnacle in human

see it. scan it. get it.

exploration. It surpassed any sort of frontier exploration than ever before, by venturing further than Earth, which thereby influenced individuals, of that time, to be part of such inspiring projects. This kick-started the convergence of a large group of diverse cultures, especially the American population, to join the field of space science and exploration. Front funding for space science and exploration projects can contribute new knowledge and evidence to different scientific modules through a variety of means. Discovery and research of celestial objects and phenomena have provided new evidence and understanding for many sciences, including physics, astronomy, ecology, biology and the like. This elaborates the extent of diverse knowledge that space exploration provides to other fields of science, social sciences included. Astrobiology is the study of life in the universe, answering questions related to our origin and evolution, as well as the future of existing life. The synergies of Earth science and space exploration pave the way for the unification of different scientific fields and also the introduction of new sciences, in particular astrobiology. This can involve the possibility of their research contribution to social sciences such as philosophy and cosmology.

These new sciences improve the scope of job opportunities, as they are new fields of scientific research which require the necessary technical manpower to conduct research experiments and studies. Space science and exploration has been the driving force for developing innovative and efficient products and services that we use today. For instance, the International Space Exploration Coordination Group, NASA being a participating member, mentioned in their paper “Benefits Stemming from Space Exploration that initial spacecraft technologies, particularly the first satellites, which were designed to test methods for space exploration, have enhanced the productive capabilities of technological services, ranging from phone calls to weather forecasts. They listed a number of services, from medical technologies and rescue operations to mobile phones, that have significantly improved due to upgrades in spacecraft technologies. This establishes the gravity and extent of technological advancement which can aid in the development of futuristic products and services. Continued investment in space science workshops and exploration programmes can enable the human race to reach heights of technological advancement never seen before, and thereby reap benefits, such as cost reductions in the production of these technological products and services if they receive massive investment. However, the various costs related to space science research programmes and exploration cannot be ignored. According to several views, these costs are the prime constraints to funding such programmes, as they require massive investments in robotics and space crafts along with high paying salaries for astronauts, engineers and the like. Today, nations around the world face multiple global issues, such as poverty, pollution and disease, which constitute the opportunity cost of funding space exploration programmes. The health risks which astronauts are exposed to when they leave Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and past accidents that have occurred during training and actual spaceflight should also be assessed. To reach a decision on whether funding for space science and exploration projects should be supported, we need to look at the sustainability and cost efficiency that can be accomplished through international cooperation between developed and developing space nations. It can help nations share the necessary large monetary costs and build up developing nations as possible exploration superpowers. These programmes can help nations achieve growth and expertise in space exploration through Earth-based research programmes as a foundation. The possibility of achieving sustainability in funding large space exploration projects through international cooperation cannot be ignored. The participation of several nations to fund space science workshops and exploration programmes should be considered while debating on the necessity of funding these projects, as well as the benefits that come with it. If we really do wish to see the change in our world, space exploration should be essential and it is the best means to achieve those milestone changes. It provides scope for lowering poverty levels, better products and services and possible employment opportunities with the introduction of different scientific research fields for our coming generations.

THE SHORTCUT TO A BETTER YOU:

STUDYING ABROAD The great, vast Earth is a place of enormous promise, wonder and potential, so it’s a shame we often get stuck in just a single place, not being able to experience the limitless possibilities of it all.

In choosing to study abroad, you are free to explore those places you have always dreamt of, to experience an entirely different way of living and understanding of society and discover who you are and who you have the potential to become. People frequently do not realise the opportunity they have until it has been missed, so we are here to urge you: don’t let this opportunity for adventure pass you by. Admittedly yes, on a short holiday you can see the tourist attractions and get a general sense of the place, but can you really say you understand the culture or the people? By choosing to study abroad you can truly involve yourself and learn more not only about the place you are in, but yourself also. During a year abroad, students generally study in smaller class sizes and have access to vast resources such as libraries, media centres, extensive sports facilities and state of the art IT labs. Students also have the chance to experience a wide range of extracurricular activities, such as theatre, sailing, cooking, dance, sports and much more.

see it. scan it. get it.

Research has also proven that putting yourself in new situations and cultures helps to improve your creativity, self-awareness, confidence, independence, mental health and extraversion. The effort it can take to study abroad is substantial, but the rewards are so much greater. Do not delay! Institutions from the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Malaysia, Italy, Spain, Georgia, Ireland, Oman and so many more are available to speak to at the Global Education Fairs; held in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, March 17th-18th and March 20th, respectively. At the Global Education Fairs, students and parents are encouraged to speak with these institutions from around the world to find out the tremendous advantages of an international experience at high school, university or language programme abroad. Entrance to the fairs is free of charge and visitors are advised to pre-register for fast-track entry at the event website: www.globaleducationfairs.net which also gives information on participating institutions and the seminar schedules. Travel

TRAVELLING ALONE FOR THE FIRST TIME? Chances are that you have the sort of family that is okay with you moving away for university to countries such as Australia or America, but completely loses it if you talk about going on a solo holiday. My parents had a bunch of problems, some of them being that I am only eighteen, a girl and that a country like Bali is prone to high crime rates, earthquakes, and poverty. However, after a lot of grovelling on my part they agreed, and I set out with a seven- kilogramme suitcase, a backpack and a book on Michelle Obama. These are the top tips from my first solo holiday.

see it. scan it. get it.

1. Trust the people that you are with I am the loudest person with people I know, and the quietest one with people I don’t know. It takes me a while to start a conversation, and even longer to have a proper one. Most of the time I give single word answers before I speak in whole sentences. Fortunately for me, though, while I was travelling solo, I was on a group tour, and the people I was with had me talking in no time. Most people could easily tell that I was alone and contrary to popular belief, they didn’t try to “take advantage of me”. I appreciated having people around me who took care of me and I will forever be thankful for that. 2. Trust yourself It’s amazing how much people underestimate you just because you are young, but you have to learn to trust yourself and trust your ability to take care of yourself. When we’re at home, we don’t do things because we know our parents will do it for us. But when you’re alone, you’re tested to the limit, so you learn how to handle yourself pretty quickly. I learned how to ask for things, place an order, bargain at the stalls, stay in when I was tired, and know when to ask for help. 3. Be Calm and Smart During my final day in Bali, there was no group tour planned, so I decided that I wanted to see the sunset from the beach. Although I had asked one of the guards for directions, I ended up going the wrong way, and I found myself reaching a dead end where a group of Indonesian biker boys sat smoking. I asked them where the beach was and they pointed in the opposite direction. Two of them got up and suggested they’d drop me on their bikes, and I knew I was in trouble. I didn’t know what to do, so I thanked them and said I’d find my own way. That’s when they started following me on their bikes. At this point, my brain did what it does when I’m on the verge of freaking out – it shut down all feelings and

started searching for ways to have them stop following me. After calming down I asked the receptionist where the beach was and this time I got the right directions and managed to watch a beautiful sunset. These types of situations are rare, but it is important to always be calm and smart about avoiding getting involved in dangerous situations. 4. Handling Money There’s now an app for currency conversions that you can download, so you don’t really need to like math or be good at it at all. In most cases, though, it’s always safer to carry dollars. When you are off on your first solo trip it probably won’t be super expensive, which helps you to not be fooled. It also helps to do your research about normal local prices of everyday things such as coffee, food, souvenirs and gifts, so that no one takes advantage of the fact that you are a tourist. 5. Do not overdo it Visiting a new place is always exciting and you want to do as many things as possible. However, you should be smart about planning activities and leave space for new things to do. Make choices about the most important things you would like to experience, things that you can not miss, and do not over do it.

Faisal Hashimi

Filmmaker and Content Creator Scan to watch video

Award-winning UAE-based independent filmmaker, Faisal Hashimi, is a self-taught, confident and multi-talented young individual whose short film ‘Perfect Living’ screened at the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner in May 2011. Since then he has become a force of nature. Catch him as a regional guest at this year’s Middle East Film and Comic Con Festival, one of the biggest pop culture events in the Middle East. We had the chance to speak with Faisal before the festival and learnt more about how he initially started off within the film industry.

How did you get interested in filmmaking? Unlike some filmmakers who knew they wanted to make films since childhood, I didn’t have something like that because I never really thought being a filmmaker was an attainable thing to dream of. But ever since I was in school, I was interested in telling stories and used to write short stories after school and keep them to myself. During college, I realised that my stories are visual in nature, so I started writing them in screenplay form and learning how the structure works. After about a year of just writing things, I realised that in the UAE it’s not feasible to just be a screenwriter, unlike Hollywood. I wanted to pick up a camera and make one of my scripts to actually see it as a real thing but I knew I had zero resources. So I wrote a short thriller script that takes place in an apartment with mainly one actor and approached my best friend to star in it. We shot it one Friday on a small handy-cam. I loved that process so much that I knew instantly that I didn’t want to be just a writer, but a filmmaker instead, and I haven’t looked back

see it. scan it. get it.

since. I don’t have any formal film training because I got my degree in marketing, but I am lucky to be born in a time where you can learn everything about a craft by simply researching it online and by doing it a number of times to see what works and what doesn’t. Filmmaking for me has always been born from the passion of sharing stories and that’s something I always keep in mind whenever I’m doing something.

What did your journey in filmmaking look like? While I never went to film school, the first real breakthrough for me was when I did a short film in 2011 called ‘Perfect Living’ and it was selected by the Abu Dhabi Film Commission at the time to be a part of the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner to represent cinema from this region. It really solidified by ambition and gave me faith that this is something viable to pursue in the UAE. My next short film ‘Bubble’ won an award at Tunis Human Rights Film Festival and I was invited to fly and attend the festival in person, which was a dream come true. Since then, my short films have screened locally at festivals like Dubai International Film Festival, as well as various film festivals in the United States, Europe and Africa. A lot of the short films I do lately are horror thrillers, which are very well received by people and festivals internationally that truly love the genre. On Youtube, my short films have over 600,000 views combined, which is insane. Just last week I watched a ten-minute reaction video of a bunch of guys reacting at watching my last short film ‘Sleight’, so it’s surreal, to say the least!

When do story ideas usually hit you? I’m think of story ideas every single day no matter what I’m doing. A lot of my story ideas come from me brainstorming ‘what if’ scenarios. What if a man who can’t sleep at night realises that someone is leaving fridge magnet alphabets on his door? What if a radio host who hates magicians gets a call from a so-called magician on the show who wants to do a live magic trick on air to prove him wrong? The last one is the plot of my lastest film ‘Sleight’. It’s these cool scenarios that really get my brain going and I start thinking of all the different possibilities and directions I could take the story in. I’ve had dreams where I vividly imagine a scene which becomes a basis for an entire short film. A lot of other times, I get great ideas for films while I’m watching mediocre or bad films in cinemas, because I’m constantly trying to guess what twists could occur in the film and then when sometimes they don’t, I write that down as something that I could use in the future since the film failed to capitalise on it. So, the inspiration strikes me everywhere.

After the critical acclaim for ‘Perfect Living’ in 2011, are expectations absurdly high for some of your newer projects? The combination of ‘Perfect Living’ and ‘Bubble’ achieving great things really led to a lot of people from the film industry in Dubai discovering me, including other actors and filmmakers. The industry is so tiny here that if you create something good, people notice you and connect on social media. Because of that, I realised that I have a fast-growing number of people focusing on the work that I do, so I made an active effort to step up my work further and ease into the kind of films I really want to make, horror or genre short films. Currently, I have a lot more people watching the work I put out so there’s certainly a lot of pressure in my head about expectations and sometimes that can be a barrier when you start thinking about how others will perceive your work. I did come close to really overthinking that a few times but I’ve learned to really trust my gut and do the unique and interesting things that I want to do rather than cater to an audience’s expectations.

What according to you was the hardest thing to film so far and how did you manage to overcome that challenge? In 2012, I did a horror short film called ‘Scrambled.’ It was a short film set entirely in a house and starring one actor throughout. It was especially challenging because I didn’t have a crew helping me. This was because we were filming at the actor’s company accommodation and he was allowed only one guest, so it was just me taking care of the camera, audio, lighting and everything else, with no one to help me whatsoever. It was very challenging to make even a ten-minute short film that way, especially since there were scenes where the light goes off. I had to remember to hold the camera in one hand and switch off the light with the other, mid-recording. The way I overcame it was to do my best by learning about different aspects of it like using microphones and how to create fake blood, because I knew it was just me who could do this. The result was a film that I’m very proud of, despite the rough edges, because I know the backstory of what an insane feat it was to get it made.

What advice do you have for young adults that wish to get into the film industry? There’s no better time to be a filmmaker. Today, you have a higher resolution camera in your iPhone than most professional film cameras 10 years ago. The tools have become accessible to anyone, so now there are no excuses and the focus is on good content. So if you’re young and want to become a filmmaker, spend lots of time researching online everything you can about how to make a film - from writing a script to using a DSLR or phone and how to frame shots, to how to edit it together. Watch a lot of feature films and short films to learn from how they did it. Once you’re ready, write an engaging script, make a film with your friends and put it out there on YouTube, then write something else and do it again. That’s exactly how I did it and eventually, you will get better at it and suddently you will be a filmmaker. I know it’s hard to find the perfect location, actors or gear to make your dream short film but it’s better to have an imperfect but finished short film that you can learn from, rather than a perfect short film that doesn’t exist. So go out there and learn by doing. And remember, don’t just move the camera, move the audience.

Tesla Is Officially Available In The UAE! According to the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, zero-emission vehicles will hit the streets of the UAE by the summer. The launch of the UAE’s dedicated online platform is supported by a pop-up store at The Dubai Mall and the opening of a service centre near the second interchange on Sheikh Zayed Road in July. Tesla will also open a store and service centre in Abu Dhabi next year.

The electric car company said it will begin taking orders for the Model S and Model X, with deliveries of the vehicles expected in the summer. Fans and buyers can look forward to enjoying two superchargers with five more to follow by the end of the year. This technology allows Tesla owners to charge their cars in minutes rather than hours. Tesla also said that they will build 26 destination chargers across the UAE, in places such as hotels and shopping centres. It also plans to add 50 more by the end of the year. Elon Musk admitted that it is indeed a big challenge for Tesla to convince people to shift to driving electric cars but he also noted that petrol price has risen in the last two year. He countered that the cost to fill up a sedan car with petrol is roughly Dh91.50 but to charge an electric car will be priced at around Dh36.60 with no additional expense for an oil change, so the end result will be lower maintenance cost for the owner. Musk assured the safety of his Tesla cars, saying that they have been tested under extreme weather conditions. “We’ve done hot-weather testing in Death Valley, California, regarded as the hottest place on Earth,” he noted. Musk said that Tesla’s cell battery can still work even under 67°C heat but he also admitted that humidity, like during summer in the UAE, can reduce the battery performance by as much as 10-15%. Previously, customers in the UAE wanting a Tesla would have had to import one. Prices start from Dh 275,000 for Model S (sedan) and Dh 344,000 for Model X (SUV). Model S, which can run up to 632 km on a single charge, is designed as an all-electric powertrain and can accelerate from zero to 100 kph in just 2.7 seconds while the sevenseater Model X has a range of 565 km on a single charge and can go from zero to 100 kph in 3.1 seconds.

Musicians

TEENAGE MUSICIANS

LISTEN UP!

Getting involved in the music industry in this day and age comes with many risks. It is a hard industry to get into and most of the time musicians are met with disappointment. However, there are teenagers with great potential to be musicians, who strive to get into the industry. They are determined to overcome all the obstacles they may face to achieve this goal. The most common way this is seen is when teenagers post their covers on social media to gain the initial recognition they need among their peers. Along with the restrictions to get into the music industry come those of support. Every musician needs an ample amount of support from their friends and family as the pressures can become overwhelming. However, being in such a dicey career path, there are numerous doubts that creep in, and as any parent would, they worry whether their child is making the right choice. Personally as a musician who has often experienced rejection and disappointment, I can say that the passion that I and many of these other musicians have is what drives us and keeps us from giving up. All musicians need is support and encouragement. Two young musicians Rehan Jay and Dakshey Raj have the same things to say. Rehan, a year twelve student in Turner Fenton SS and Dakshey a Law student at the University of Aberdeen have multiple things in common. They both started playing instruments at a young age and have always felt a connection to music. When asked, they both said that it was as though they were drawn to music and they felt that it was the best way to express themselves. Dakshey and Rehan both live abroad in the UK and Canada respectively and find managing their time so that they can

stay in touch with music is one of the most challenging tasks. However, they both make the most of every opportunity they get. Both Rehan and Dakshey have had an abundant amount of exposure. They both believe that doing shows in front of audiences is the best way to improve. Rehan has certificates in production, lighting and sound from JUNOs, Trinity College, his old school Gems Modern Academy in Dubai and his current school in Canada. Dakshey has participated in a number of school festivals and shows in India, gaining him ample amounts of experience. As teenagers, it was very hard for Rehan and Dakshey to tell their parents about what they really wanted to pursue. However eventually they both did. At first their parents were a little hesitant as any parent would be, but they later realised how much music meant to both of them. Today with the support of their parents both Rehan and Dakshey are more successful than ever before. by BONFILIA PEREIRA

BHAKTI KHUBCHANDANI Take the leap of faith, know that you are taking a calculated risk

ESCAPE REALITY Bhakti Khubchandani, twenty-two-year-old founder of Escape Reality realised at a very young age that she wanted to create something of her own. It comes as no surprise then that this clear vision and high level of self-awareness has today translated into a dream that is almost unfathomable for most people her age. Bhakti completed her formal education from New York University, College of Arts and Science, and the American University in Dubai, where she was an overachiever (she was placed on Dean’s List every semester). She pursued marketingrelated internships and worked on side ventures throughout her time at university, which held her in good stead when she decided to establish Escape Reality - an interactive and immersive real-life escape game experience. Realising the growing potential for this nascent market in the UAE, she decided to combine her business skills with a long-standing love for logical puzzles, movies and adventures and come up with the concept for Escape Reality.

How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Sometime in December 2015 I went to play and experience an escape room for the first time, I had no idea what it was and my friends convinced me to go try it out. When I was playing the game, I experienced such an adrenaline rush racing against time to escape in 60 minutes. I remember being super happy unravelling clues with my team, and ecstatic that it combined my love for playing games, solving puzzles (being the girl who does the Sudoku every morning) and taking on adventures, in such a creative way! I was amazed at how simple yet genius this idea was, to convert a virtual escape game into a real-life escape room. I remember going back to my dad, later on, telling him how much fun I had and how I would love to do something like an escape room. And all he said was, “Why don’t you?” and that got me thinking about all of this. I was awake the entire night researching different escape rooms, how they work, and the next morning I felt like a new person with an open mindset unlike ever before.

Tell us about yourself? I am Indian by origin, my family moved out here to the U.A.E when I was two years old so this is the place that I grew up and consider home. I completed my high school here, then went to America to pursue my bachelor’s degree from New York University where I took up Psychology and Economics. I chose Economics because I love the business side of things and Psychology because I am fascinated by human behaviour. At my current job, I am lucky to combine both of my passions. After being in New York for some time, I came back to Dubai to complete my university at the American University in Dubai and I was also helping out with my dad’s family business. Honestly having that work experience at Indigo Properties was more beneficial than anything that I could have learned from a textbook. That was when I could truly put into practice everything that I have learned from college. It is safe to say that I am still learning and every day brings a new challenge and teaches me something that I never knew before.

What was your mission at the outset? My main mission was to directly contribute to the happiness of someone else. All the internships I have taken up, all the positions that I have worked at have all been amazing from a business standpoint but I didn’t really feel like I was directly contributing to someone where I could see them with that big smile on their faces. That is what I really felt was lacking and what I really wanted to tap into. So my mission with Escape Reality was just to see that smile on people’s faces and knowing that I have made a difference to someone’s life. And now courtesy of my new venture I get to do just that.

What did you do exactly to set up the business? In terms of setting up the business, it had far more steps than I had initially anticipated, every day brought in a new journey and challenges and all I knew was that all these separate journeys would eventually lead back to the one objective that I have. Being so new to the industry, it was key to find someone that had experience in this field, who could take this forward with me. I was lucky enough to meet just the right person - now my mentor, business partner and friend - where we joined hands to start Escape Reality. We first started off by creating the company, set up our office, then find a team of architects who would actually pose as game designers to design our portfolio of rooms. So my business partner specialises in the research and development and the game design, and I am focusing on operations, business development, and expansion plans. My business partner and

My main mission was to directly contribute to the happiness of someone else

I have tied in together pretty well to make this dream into our reality, as we tap into both of our strengths in carrying out all aspects of the business, from daily operations to steps taken for business development and global expansion. In the case of the Dubai store, as an example, we had to first secure a prime location with 6000 square feet that would be ideal to create a premium escape room. We are so grateful to have our perfect spot on Sheikh Zayed Road, right at the FGB metro station! We then had to get all of the necessary approvals from the authorities, in order to execute our construction plans and build our designs into reality. Then, various elements came into play, from constructing the store to creating customised props, and carrying out automation works, for which we had the support of a passionate team of individuals that considered the store as their own. The one thing that was very exciting was hiring the staff, as you know I am twenty-two and when I started setting up the business I was still studying in college, and I am hiring people who are older than me and more experienced than me. It is safe to say that from the initial interviews that I carried out I was probably more nervous than the people coming into the interview.

What is unique about your business, since there is so much competition? Most escape rooms are usually done up in a specific theme and hints are given to players via a TV screen or a walkie-talkie, sometimes the game master comes into the room to give clues. However, that takes away from letting it be a completely immersive experience which is why we have created our own app which uses emerging technology like augmented reality (spoiler alert) and through this app you can ask for a solution if you need it, otherwise you’re off on your own adventure with your friends. Of course, we are watching via a CCTV camera to ensure that you are comfortable and on the right track. Beside this, we have also integrated a lot of high tech gadgets, props, puzzles in our eight unique escape rooms within our Dubai branch.

What was the largest obstacle you faced when you were starting out with Escape Reality? The hardest part is definitely the real estate game, we have opened four stores in the UK, one in Dubai, two stores in the States which open up in April 2017. What we really underestimated was how long it would take to get the right property. The first thing you need to do is make sure that it is big enough in terms of size, then the location has to be ideal, so there has to be a lot of heavy footfall where there are restaurants. Once you have found the place and are happy with it, you then have to pitch to the landlord, after which the landlord needs to be happy with it as well, then you move on to negotiating the terms, once that is handled you then go to meet the right authorities and get all the necessary approvals and statuses. This process in itself takes anywhere from three to six months and it has been the biggest challenge but it has also been fun.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? Take the leap of faith, know that you are taking a calculated risk. If the financials make sense and the only thing stopping you is your fear then just take the leap of faith anyway. If you believe in what you are working towards with no doubt in your mind, then the right people come into your life and join you in your journey to make it happen.

I’m admittedly a perfectionist when it comes to finding the right lyric or right note

HASAN MALIK Scan to watch video

Hasan Malik, a Dubai-based performer, has come a long way since he first learned to play the piano at the age of 5. After dedicating much of his childhood to music, Hasan made his national debut in front of 10,000 people at Red Fest DXB at the age of 16. Now, Hasan is a regular performer at Open Mic nights all across the Emirates. We sat down with him to talk about his journey as a musician and the music scene here in Dubai.

see it. scan it. get it.

How did your journey as a musician start? Music has always been, and remains, a large part of my life. I suppose music itself has always been inside of me - the journey has been discovering more and more instruments and sounds from different countries, people, and cultures, and attempting to forge my own identity as a musician from what I have gathered from the world of music around me.

What’s your dream as a musician? My underlying desire, whether it be through music or other forms of empowerment, is to improve the lives of those whom don’t have the means to do so themselves. This can be achieved through events and initiatives such as charity concerts, the construction of schools and hospitals, or even far simpler things such as brightening up someone’s week with half an hour of live music. Through becoming a renowned performer, my ability to do all these things is only heightened.

Tell us about your songwriting process? The inspiration for the songs I write can come from anything or anyone, so I’m constantly writing, humming melodies, and recording voice-notes as I go about my daily life. I’m admittedly a perfectionist when it comes to finding the right lyric or right note. More often than not, I’ll leave a piece of work unfinished and revisit it over a period of a few days or weeks until it is as I imagined it to be. After studying songwriting for a few weeks at Berklee College of Music in Boston, it became clear that writing is something that can’t be forced, nor can it be planned.

Have you released any music recently? With regards to recent releases, my song, ‘For Now’, was featured on GoPlaytheWorld Volume 1 – the album, which is a collection of 6 songs from regional artists - reached Number 1 on iTunes Middle East, which was a great indicator of the potential of local music. There’s definitely more music to come!

What can we expect from you in the future? This year is huge for both me personally and for the scene itself. I’ve been blessed to have grown with the scene thus far, and can only hope that it all continues in the same manner this year. As I get older and closer to recording a full length album, the focus will be once more be on mastering my performance and set, and fine-tuning my song-writing. I also hope to increase my collaboration with other great musicians across Dubai. I’ve learnt so much already from the shows of the many musicians who perform across the city, and have made some great friends along the way too.

VINTAGE CHOCOLATE LOUNGE Still craving something sweet after having a filling meal? You don’t have to look too far. The Vintage Chocolate Lounge at The Dubai Mall will satisfy all your chocolate cravings with their ‘chocolate shot.’ We absolutely loved the subtle ambience with dim lighting, which makes you feel like you’re walking into your own personal chocolate paradise. Upon entering the cafe you are greeted with the aromatic smell of chocolate. The seating is warm, comfortable and you easily sink into the plush chairs. The restaurant is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the usual foot traffic that is to be experienced at The Dubai Mall. The staff is friendly, efficient and well versed with what they are selling. They have suitable prices for two people or more and after a simple glance at the menu your mouth starts to water, but don’t worry, as these are all the normal symptoms of being at the Vintage Chocolate Cafe!

Rice creamery Rice Creamery in Citywalk offers over 35 unique flavours of rice pudding, which is beyond our imagination. Their aim is to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth and to be able to turn any sceptic into a rice pudding lover. The staff were very welcoming and kind and enlightened us about the rice pudding parlour. To enhance the taste and presentation of the rice pudding, there were many toppings ranging from marshmallows to fruits. The décor added to the beauty of the place. We started off with Oreofee and Marshmallow Pudding which sounds weird and surprising, however it tasted absolutely delicious and the marshmallows just made it even better. Next, we tried the Nutella and White Chocolate with Blueberries, which was the perfect combination of nuts, and brown and white chocolate. The texture was creamy, which made it even more appetising and the blueberries added a sour twist to the sweetness of the rice pudding. Lastly, we tried the More S’more and White Chocolate with Lotus Biscuit Pudding, which was so mouth watering and each bite kept getting better. It is definitely a must try for all you sugarholics out there. Another cool thing to mention was that you are also served lemon and cinnamon juice which was very refreshing and tasty. The portion is really good for the price ( small- 18dhs, medium-23dhs, large- 90dhs) and it’s quite filling. It is one of a kind and definitely, a must try for all.

The shot itself has a very comforting visual appeal and smooth texture. The melted Magnum chocolate has a richly pleasant and soothing effect on your taste buds which almost neutralises all your other senses. All in all the Vintage Chocolate Lounge is a great place to relax and finish off your meal. Their delicious menu will put a smile on your face and the affordable prices will keep you craving more.

PRAX’S Looking for something savoury? Save your worries because nothing says savoury like Asian cuisine and we have the perfect dining spot for you. Located in Barsha Heights, Prax’s has truly reached a new height of Chinese food aiming to satisfy any of your cravings. Prax’s offers a diverse range of options. We started off with the refreshing papaya salad, a rich blend of veggies, noodles and garlic powder, and finally, desserts that could stump your taste buds- whilst also keeping your budget to AED 105 for two people. Besides the pre-set menu, you are also free to put together your own combination of flavours and spices. When it comes to dessert, at first glance you sit astonished at such a combination like those of caramel & dates, even ginger and coconut; but once you encounter such a new experience, you’d wonder why no one has once thought of it before. From the starters to the desserts, we kept wanting more. The food is absolutely divine and we really loved the flavours of most of the dishes we ordered and highly recommend trying their dynamite prawns as it was one of the best we have had in some time. Their freestyle option of making your own meal is brilliant and loaded with amazing flavours. Recommend trying Jasmine rice along with prawns with sweet and sour sauce. Do note that their quantity for mains is quite large and can serve two people, so order wisely.

COCO YOGO This is the ‘Awesome Rawsome Banoffee’ by Coco Yogo. For a hot summer day, this is the perfect dessert, as it is refreshing, sweet and completely guilt-free.

Price: AED 105 for two people (approx.) Locations: Al Barsha Heights and Jumeriah

by FAYE THERESE FRANCIS, GISELLE RODRIGUES AND

KHUSHBOO MANGHNANI

It is basically an avocado and cocoa mousse with cashew and banana cream on a base of dates. It is a satiating bowl of goodness. As a dessert, it is delicious on its own and the quantity is filling enough. The best part is it is completely healthy. However, if you are craving banoffee in particular, then we would suggest looking for another dessert alternative. As it lacks the classic flavour of bananas and caramel together. There is a zesty and sour aftertaste to this guilt-free banoffee, which reminds us of a cheesecake rather than the classic British banoffee. The classic banoffee has that heavenly, decadent texture that is incomparable. For AED 35, the dessert is worth a try for sure as it is light, creamy and healthy. Perfect for the sweet tooth and the weighing scale. You can attend one of the Ripe Markets in Dubai and find them there or buy their other goodies online.

Success is about trusting your instincts and following your gut, knowing which rules to follow and which to break. This book shows that success doesn’t come from where you went to college or how popular you were in school. Filled with brazen wake-up calls, cunning and frank observations, and behind-the-scenes stories from Nasty Gal’s meteoric rise, #GIRLBOSS covers a lot of ground. Sophia Amoruso went from high-school dropout to Founder and Executive Chairman of Nasty Gal, one of the fastest-growing retailers in the world. Sophia’s never been a typical executive or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for other girls like her: outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success.

The international bestseller about life, the universe and everything in between. When 14-year-old Sophie encounters a mysterious mentor who introduces her to philosophy, mysteries deepen in her own life. Why does she keep getting postcards addressed to another girl? Who is the other girl? And who, for that matter, is Sophie herself? To solve the riddle, she uses her new knowledge of philosophy, but the truth is far stranger than she could have imagined. An addictive blend of mystery, philosophy and fantasy, Sophie’s World is an international phenomenon which has been translated into 60 languages and sold more than 40 million copies.

A couple in their thirties live in a small rented cottage in a quiet part of Tokyo. They work at home as freelance writers. They no longer have very much to say to one another. One day a cat invites itself into their small kitchen. She is a beautiful creature. She leaves, but the next day comes again, and then again and again. Written by Japanese poet and novelist Takashi Hiraide, the book won Japan’s Kiyama Shohei Literary Award and was a bestseller in France and America. AED 52

YouthSpeak 2016

GLOBAL YOUTHSPEAK FORUM 2016: WARSAW, POLAND

In August 2016, 800 people from 126 countries were united for an 8-day conference, AIESEC’s International Congress 2016. Organised in Warsaw, Poland, this forum kicked off the biggest gathering of international youth leaders from around the world. The forum’s theme in 2016 was Taking Humanity Forward: Youth Leadership for Impact, and the goal was to bridge the gap between youth leadership by understanding what skills and competencies young people have and what they need to develop to become the best version of themselves. The forum took place over the course of two days and was hosted by Jay Shetty, who focused on linking it closely to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

All4she. The project ended up winning first place among all the global regions and will be implemented through AIESEC’s local chapters within the MEA region. Currently, the project has already begun in the local chapters of Bahrain, Oman, and Egypt. Having been inspired by the contribution of youth, I was assured that our voices are powerful enough to end the majority of the world’s problems. This inspiration drove me to come back to my local AIESEC chapter in the UAE and make a similar movement take place here.

by RAGHAD GOMAA

The event consisted of keynotes, to inspire delegates about relevant global social issues in addition to workshops revolving around the SDGs. Finally, there were action spaces where participants got to generate answers to specific “how” questions in reference to solving global issues relevant to their regions. The delegates were divided into MEA, Asia Pacific, Americas and Europe. The event partners included Apple, ING, Google and PWC, as well as more of AIESEC’s global partners. Being a part of this forum was definitely eye opening as it shed light on important global issues and how powerful we are as young people. For us, the most beneficial part of the event was the action spaces, where we got the chance to create a project that targeted women’s rights within the region, called

India May Meet Its Energy Needs From the Moon By 2030, Says ISRO Scientist

Someone invented a solar panel system that tracks the sun all day and folds up at night

India can look forward to the moon to fulfil its energy requirements, according to ISRO scientist Sivathanu Pillai. The distinguished professor at the ISRO said with conviction on Saturday that the country would meet its energy requirements by 2030 through Helium-3 mined from the moon. Mr Pillai, a former Chief of BrahMos Aerospace, said mining lunar dust, which is rich in Helium-3, was a priority programme for the ISRO. He said other countries were also working on the project and there was enough helium on the moon to meet the energy requirements of the whole world.

‘Smartflower’ claims to be the world’s first “intelligent energy plant.” It’s a solar system that unfolds its giant solar panel petals in the morning and follows the sun throughout the day. It closes up at night or during heavy weather conditions. Its mobility makes it more efficient than traditional roof solar panel systems, while its design makes it aesthetically appealing and discrete.

Meet the First Woman to Win the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics” Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman in 78 years to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, considered the highest honour in mathematics. She was selected for “stunning advances in the theory of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.” The Fields Medal is awarded every four years by the International Mathematical Union to outstanding mathematicians under 40 who show promise of future achievement. Many hope Mirzakhani’s Fields medal is a sign of change to come. “I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians,” she said in a press release.

Japan’s ‘anti-loneliness’ cafe goes viral You can now add the “anti-loneliness” Moomin House Cafe to the menagerie of “wait, what?” strokes of Japanese brilliance. The cafe went viral a few weeks ago and has since been besieged with customers wanting a taste of its “anti-loneliness” magic. To save its lone customers from the awkward perils of solo dining, the cafe kindly seats diners with stuffed animal companions called Moomins, a family of white hippo-like characters created by Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson. To honour the characters’ heritage, Moomin House Cafe serves bread made from Finnish rye and offers food and pastries in the form of Moomin characters. Cafe staff say there have been long lines almost every day since its “lonely-friendly” concept went viral.

If he had his way, Iceland’s President would ban pineapple pizza This week Iceland’s President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson was taking questions from students at a high school in North Iceland, when one bold pupil asked Johannesson what he thought about pineapple as a pizza topping. The president held nothing back expressing his disdain for the pairing. He also said if he had the power to pass laws, he’d ban it across the land. While this may not be the most controversial ban floating around politics, it wouldn’t be surprising if a “Hawaiian pizza lovers” rally popped up in the near future.

This woman visited every country on Earth in record time Over the past year and a half, American traveller Cassie De Pecol has visited every country in the world, and the greetings she received weren’t always gracious. She had set out to promote peace in her own small way, by meeting people from every country in the world -- and she did so at a record pace. Travelling to all the world’s 196 sovereign nations in 18 months and 26 days, De Pecol made the trip in less than half the time it took the previous Guinness World Record holder. In total, De Pecol budgeted $198,000 to get herself around the world. De Pecol was 23 years old when she began planning her journey, and in the beginning, she had no funding. During the year and a half that she spent planning her trip, she says she saved $10,000 by babysitting, then went about acquiring sponsors.
