Bob Marley once said, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” How true is that statement? Whether you are happy, sad, angry, anxious, excited or nervous, music has the cure to it all. This is why we interviewed fifteen-year-old Millie Page who is a UAE based musician making big waves in the local music scene. We loved Page as she truly is mature beyond her age, humble, down to earth, kind, confident, and passionate about music. She spoke with such ease about her demanding journey creating her first EP, being true to herself by not giving power to the haters, balancing school, friends and embracing her own individual self. Within this issue, we also share the amazing story of Kalaripayattu, which is the mother of all martial arts and one of the oldest surviving fighting styles still existent in the world. Shaolin Kung Fu is said to have been evolved from Kalarippayattu. A few of our interns tried their hand at it while understanding its concepts and history. Read the article on page 24-25 and make sure to scan the image with our ‘get it’ mobile app to watch the fighters perform. I hope that September and the start of the academic year brings you many adventures and memories. Cheers to the stories of the past, the ones we live in the present and much much, more to come in the future.

Another great game by Ellen Degeneres. This one is meant for group play; the more the merrier. You make up fake answers to real trivia questions. The point is to get as many people to choose your fake answer as compared to the true ones. It’s so much fun and gets hysterically funny when you play with a large group of friends.

In our opinion, this is superior to google maps. It gives you multiple routes to choose from to get to your destination before you start driving. It notifies you about speed traps, traffic light cameras and even alerts you if you are about to go over the speed limit. Ideal for new drivers who are not yet used to the UAE’s roads.

Saima Khan

SAIMA KHAN UN DELEGATE AND CO-FOUNDER OF STEP UP

UN delegate, founder of social enterprise Step Up, former TedX speaker are just some of the titles for nineteen-year-old Saima Khan. Despite achieving so much in such a short amount of time Saima is a regular teen that has many hobbies and passions. What is even more refreshing is the fact that she is down to earth and has such a unique and creative way of thinking.

Khan is the best example of someone whose heart can be won through her stomach. Like many young adults, she loves everything related to food, especially creating professionally stylised food. Saima spends a large chunk of her time watching cooking shows and can even see herself going to culinary school because of her exact replicas of Food Network desserts. “I have always loved to do things differently, whether it was studying, dressing up, or even eating. I don’t like doing it the normal way,” said Khan. She explained her past ideas that beat conventional norms along with her distinctive mannerisms, proving her creative side is quite rare. She is always on the go because she likes to stay busy with the large number jobs but surprisingly, Khan procrastinates. Not a lot but, when she does, she’ll do it to the tipping point. Although Saima isn’t heavily into sports or going out a lot, she enjoys the adrenaline rush from

see it. scan it. get it.

watching a horror movie or playing a real life escape room challenge. Other than that, she enjoys watching TV shows such as Friends and The Big Bang Theory. See! A totally normal human being but there’s quite a lot that the youth can learn from her. Her biggest achievement is becoming a UN delegate, she explains how she can see herself as a CEO but never thought she’d make it to the UN. In the initial phase after setting this goal, she only faced obstacles, her age being the biggest restriction (the minimum age is 21) and she saw no hope until then. Her applications kept getting rejected and she felt her final and successful eighth attempt would be another failure. “It was my wow moment. It taught me to keep pushing myself and not give up,” said Khan. Most people believe that when something isn’t working out for you, it’s not meant to be but Saima stands out from the rest in that way. “I go to the extent to make things happen for me,” she continued. For being so young she has had her fair share of failures, however, that has never stopped her from trying new things. “Despite being associated with 75 organisations, I still feel it’s less. I always think I can do more and I wish I started at an earlier age,” Khan continued. It’s that age-old adage of knowing we can always do more, which we, young people, always feel. She began volunteering at the age of 13 and the thought of doing more has been her biggest source of motivation and this is what keeps her going.

Talking about her TedX experience, hearing all the compliments after she stepped off the platform was a very moving moment for her. “It’s a platform to inspire people and be inspired,” said Khan. Her moving moment was receiving compliments from the audience members as she always thought she was too young to inspire anyone and hadn’t accomplished enough to be a TedX speaker. Despite being so young, she’s achieved a lot more than most. Her friends went on and on about how big a deal it was in the TedX spotlight, some deeming it equivalent to joining the UN. After the whole experience, she realized that she had a right to inspire. Watch this girl in action by taking a look at her organisation Step Up. And let me tell you! They have big plans and you can get involved. After the company is established as a licensed organisation, their first priority is getting more volunteers on board who truly wish to make a difference in the world. The second is targeting each project to one of UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The last target is to fulfil their commitment to building 50 wells across the world.

Let’s Get Healthy

KINDNESS

MORE VEGGIES PLEASE

The people of this world are going through a heartbreaking and traumatic time, so it would be nice if more people started being nicer and kinder to each other. Make an effort and be kind not only to your friends but even to strangers.

You’re probably familiar with zoodles, but have you tried spiralizing carrots, apples, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, squash or cabbage? Also, cauliflower rice and spaghetti squash are amazing and fun ways to use vegetables in your cooking. Now it’s all about getting creative with vegetables dominating the dish.

Let’s Get Healthy Healthy living doesn’t seem to be going anywhere this year and thank goodness, because it’s incredibly beneficial to our health, energy, vitality and ultimately, we feel better when we prioritise our wellness. Here are ten health trends that will be quite popular.

see it. scan it. get it.

MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS

GOLDEN MILK LATTE

Medicinal mushrooms such as reishi and maitake have so many benefits such as boosting our immune systems, anti-aging, cancerfighting, increasing energy and longevity. They come in powdered form which can easily be added to your smoothies, soups or teas. We are madly in love with the mushroom hot chocolate, they are truly delicious.

Traditionally known as turmeric lattes, these are the new matcha lattes of 2017. The gold-coloured lattes are the up-and-coming warm drink to sip on this season as they are anti-inflammatory and amazing for your skin. Tastes good, feels good and makes you look good.

MORE READING, LESS TV

WORKOUT INTENTIONS

MINIMALISM

Many people are setting intentions this academic year around carving out more time for reading. A good book can be wonderful for continued learning, leisure, inspiration and encouragement. It takes you places you’ve never been before and widens your imagination.

Working out is great for decreasing stress, focusing on self-care and recharging. And there are so many options than ever before, choose one that will challenge and inspire you to live your best life yet. Try them all and chose what you like best.

This is the season for less, simple and clean when it comes to relationships, your home, office, food and life in general. With everyone being so busy people are focusing on minimalism. Declutter your life and you’ll feel happy and light.

NATURAL BEAUTY

TECH-FREE BEDROOMS

PLANT-BASED PROTEIN

This year focus on clean ingredients that are made with naturally sourced products, that are non-toxic and without any harsh chemicals. Give your skin a break and use natural products. We also adore the no makeup trend that is sure to keep your skin happy.

The bedroom should always be your safe, peaceful and calm haven. So when you have your TV, laptop and phone with you, you are more prone to distractions. We already spend the majority of the day online so perhaps once you get home you could try being productive by reading a book or focusing on a new hobby or learning to play a new instrument.

This isn’t new, but its popularity continues to grow. More people are getting creative with plantbased protein in meals and reducing their meat intake. Some great examples include: hemp seeds, chia seeds, quinoa, raw nuts, nut butters, lentils, chickpeas and avocado. We have all seen the ever green avocado toasts and protein fruit bowls with nuts posted all over social media as proof.

Martial Arts

Scan to watch video

KALARIPPAYATTU The Oldest Form of Self-Defence Kalarippayattu is the mother of all martial arts. It is one of the oldest surviving fighting styles still existent in the world. Shaolin Kung Fu is said to have been evolved from Kalarippayat. When posed with this question, no one at the office could say yes. So we decided to investigate. The origins of Kalarippayat are shrouded in obscurity, but we do know from written records in the Sangam era of 300 BCE to 300 CE that it was crafted in the South of India. It was taken to China by the Pallava king-turned-monk and Kalari master Bodhidharma, who is also credited with formulating zen Buddhism. Kalarippayat is a form of self-defence made unique by its amalgamation of science, art and medicine. It has been derived from nature - the stances and postures used by animals fighting in the wild were observed and adapted to the human body. Intrigued, we approached the Sanjeev Krishna Yoga Center in Dubai to try out the art ourselves. They have the UAE’s only

physical Kalari - the enclosure where kalarippayat is practised - and three skilled trainers who were happy to show us some of the moves. They started us off with some dynamic stretches, which took about 20 minutes to cover the whole body, and it left us feeling light and bouncy. Next up were straight leg kicks, don’t let the name fool you as doing these kicks requires impeccable balance and control not only over the legs but the whole body. Not to mention the flexibility that is needed to swing the entire leg up to high-five the palm that is stretched straight up above the head is something to aspire to in the future. These stretches, leg exercises and body movements are part of the first stage of Kalari training, called Meithaari. The second stage called Kolthaari consists of wooden weapons training, such as the short and long sticks and the third stage Angathaari is training in metallic weapons like daggers, swords and shield. Sounds cool right?

We were also shown how to do one of the 8 vadivus (animal stances, which are elephant, horse, cat, lion, wild boar, snake, cock and peacock) that go on to form the backbone of meippayattu - body exercises designed to hone flexibility and physical fitness. Since we are beginners, we began with the horse stance. First of all, it was quite challenging to assume the position, let alone hold it. Then repeatedly shifting from one leg to the other was comparable to a particularly arduous leg day at the gym. With some practice, however, we did eventually do a complete set without wobbling or falling over.

After our first session we felt lighter, energised, flexible and ready for anything. The soreness the day after was well-worth it and we wore it like a badge of honour for what we had managed to accomplish as beginners. This holistic approach to fitness and self-defence is something to be admired and shared. Website: www.sanjeevkrishnayoga.com

The instructors did treat us to some advanced meippayat and sparring. It was a pleasure to watch the fluidity and sureness of their movement - not a jump or kick out of place. Perfect synchronisation. It was also really exciting to see the basic animal stances we learned being put into effect in a combat situation. And what’s more: the head of the yoga centre, Guruji Sanjeev Krishna explained how psychology and physiology meet in this martial art.

Visual Artist

being creative is allowing oneself to see things in a different manner.

SAVANNAH DU QUERCY French Visual Artist Savannah du Quercy is a French visual artist based in Dubai and London. She studied performing arts for 4 years in the United Kingdom and has since then embarked on a journey of making art from whatever inspires her. In addition, she is also very passionate about acting and theatre, which she tries to incorporate into her work. Over the last 3 years, she has held several solo exhibitions in Dubai, participated in group exhibitions and art fairs across the UAE and abroad. Savannah has also done several commissioned works in private residences and hotels. We had the chance to interview this multi-talented artist and learn more about her journey.

What does “being creative” mean to you? Being creative, to me, is allowing oneself to see things in a different manner, hence using one’s creative imagination as much as one can. I could easily limit myself to painting on canvas and continue to do that for years but that isn’t creative. I’m currently working on 2 new projects which I have never done before and even though it sometimes frightens me I am forcing myself to use that initial creative thought I had to explore it beyond my limits. As artists, whether it be filmmakers, painters

see it. scan it. get it.

or sculptors, witnessing things around us constantly inspire us to elaborate different ideas and being creative is about taking all of these ideas in and exploring them. It’s about taking risks and not being afraid to fail. You have nothing to lose in trying something new if anything you have everything to gain.

Can you describe the time when you first realised that creating was something you absolutely had to do? Creating was something that was always within me from a young age. I started painting from a very young age and being fascinated with things that were colourful but I suppose every kid is! I only realised this was my life path when I joined Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in England. It gave me the confidence to explore my creativity, to expand my imagination and allowed me to grow in what soon was to become a true passion. As soon as I started painting I also explored textile, dance, acting, movement, and music with some of the most amazing teachers at Tring. This is what made me realise that being involved in the arts was something I wanted to my life.

What kind of creative patterns, routines or rituals do you have? I don’t really have any patterns or rituals but one thing I always do is write things down. I always have a notebook in my bag which is very helpful whenever I go out and see something that inspires me. That way if I have an idea that pops into my head I can make sure to have a record of it. In my studio, my process is very spontaneous. I like to listen to music, look at art, books or photographs I took and let my work take its natural course.

What’s your favourite thing you’ve ever created? All of my work is very much like a personal diary to me, therefore, I don’t have one that is a favourite. They all represent a moment in time, an emotion or a thought that is a part of me so I can’t choose one.

What are you trying to communicate with your art? I want to communicate the human experience through my work. What we all go through but sometimes don’t like to face because it’s hard. From emotions such as loss, love, joy or pain, my aim is to share my stories in the hope to inspire others and make them feel something. I am also a huge fan of recycling and I use a lot of repurposed materials and objects such as wood, fabrics, glass, metal and dried mod rock as a means of introducing the viewer to the idea that recycled materials can be the beginning of any artistic creation.

Which creative medium would you love to pursue but haven’t yet? I have always loved fashion and furniture because of how it can make one feel. Coming home to a place which makes you feel great and clothes that show who you are are such important things in people’s lives. I am currently working on some new projects that I’m very excited about and they involve textile, wood as well as some other materials.

What’s the best advice you have ever received? Don’t give up on your dreams and keep working even if you think your work is terrible. Some of you have full-time jobs so you may not have too much time to explore your artistic endeavours, but dedicate some time to it every day if you can. It is so important! Also, don’t compare yourself to others. Our generation is filled with that so focus on you and your personal development. Share your very own story.

Fun facts? I love travelling, enjoy trying different cuisines, Earl Grey tea, photography, animals and learning different languages.

That is why we tracked down Millie to speak to her about music, life, her plans for the future and how she started her career. Scan to follow

How often do you work on your music? Every few days I will pick up my guitar and start tinkering with it and try to find new chords to which I can write a song.

Who has influenced your music? I am influenced by people like David Bowie, a lot of Indie bands, and punk pop songs.

What processes did you have to complete in order to release your first EP? In order to complete my first EP, I went to the studio three days a week after school and stayed in the studio for two hours. I worked with the distillers at Hard Rock Cafe, my producer Joshua F Williams and it took us about four months to complete it fully.

What skills/personal attributes are most important to be successful? A really important personality trait is resilience and positivity.

What was the hardest part of the process? The hardest part was uploading all the music to iTunes US, UK and UAE. That took us a while.

How long did it take you to complete your 12 original songs? It took me nine months to complete my 12 original songs and I started writing since September 2016.

How would you describe your songs in terms of genres? I would describe my music as Indie Alternative/ Indie Rock predominately alternative music.

Do you have any professional training or are you self-taught? I am completely self-taught on the guitar, piano and vocals.

Does making music affect your school or personal life? How do you manage to do it all? Yes, making music does affect my personal life as I am at home a lot writing and my friends are all out together. It does affect school as well since I have rehearsals, events and gigs that I perform at after school. I try to manage it all by balancing my time, giving equal importance to school and music.

How do you get people to take you seriously as a musician? As a fifteen-year-old girl, it is hard to be noticed and recognized within the music scene especially in the UAE. I just try to be as professional as I can be in order for people to take me seriously.

see it. scan it. get it.

the biggest challenge that i face is getting people to take me seriously as a young artist.

How do you promote yourself and find new gigs to perform at? I perform at Go Play The World which is an open mic where a lot of people come to watch new musicians and that is where a lot of my gigs stem from. They also help promote me on Facebook via posters and posts. Personally, I also have a Facebook page and an Instagram page where I post all of my gig information.

What kind of challenges do you face? The biggest challenge that I do face is getting people to take me seriously as a young artist.

If not music then what other career do you see yourself in? If not music then I would like to be a criminal psychologist as I really enjoy psychology. I also love being around children who have special needs as that is what my mum does for a living and that is also something that I am interested in.

Out of all the songs that you have written which one is the most personal to you? The most personal song that I have written is ‘February’ as it has an important message about what you see on the news. It has a very personal message that I share with my friends.

What was the hardest song to record? ‘February’ was hard to record because we couldn’t find the exact drum beat we wanted. Even though we had the pre-recorded drums and the live ones done by the distillers and we ended up having to find really weird ways of creating the drum sounds. So the drums you hear within the verse of February was created by a fabric sofa, we used drumsticks wrapped in masking tape and basically hit the sofa with the microphone under the cushions. So what you are hearing is the muffled sounds of us beating a sofa.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue a career in music? My advice to anyone who wants to get into the music industry is to not give up, be an individual and don’t let anybody cast a shadow over you and just keep going.

Unconventional Jobs

UNCONVENTIONAL JOBS ARE THE NEW JOB PROSPECTS In today’s day and age, the 9-6 work schedule has become arbitrary. In a generation where social media dominates our lives, there is a vast scope of professions that people can delve into. Millennials these days look for creative work, with flexible hours and prefer to be

their own bosses. Even those on gap years or sabbaticals wish to open new frontiers or change career paths eventually shift into creative fields or do something social media related. Contrary to the monotonous cubicle job, unconventional professions allow for relatable and passionate work.

And because social media is so prominent in our lives, it helps to enhance this choice of life. Here’s an insight into some careers that people can thrive in.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT

BARISTA

ONLINE BLOG

If travelling is on your bucket list, then what’s a better way of doing so while making money. Moreover, you also get exposure to new cultures and tackle situations you won’t have ever thought you’d be a part of. For example- helping in an emergency childbirth or diminishing a fire on board. Flight attendants are basically sky ninjas! Some even video their experiences via blogs or vlog their adventures and put it on YouTube or websites as additional source of income or leisure.

Worldwide, frothing lattes for strangers, for the most part, is the skill set you need. So if you have this down you could potentially work anywhere. This could be a casual part-time job, which if worked for a long period of time could potentially help gain input about running a business. Additionally, it could also open frontiers into hotel management if the restaurant or café is in a hotel. And if you’re really ambitious you can even open your own restaurant or gain an administrator position in hotels within a few years time.

Blogging is another way of expressing yourselves, whether it’s a means of catharsis or gaining a salary. Through this platform, people voice their opinions, talk about their experiences and stories. Moreover, blogs are a brilliant marketing tool by which clients can be kept up-to date on latest products, a company’s new deals and provide tips. Try your hand at writing by easily creating a website from wordpress.org or Squarespace.

LIFESTYLE ENTREPRENEUR

YOUTUBER

ONLINE COURSE

This career and that of a YouTuber can go hand in hand. A lifestyle entrepreneur is an entrepreneur who makes their living online. It’s an individual who begins a business with the aim of altering their personal life and not for the sole purpose of making profits. But ultimately serve others through their learning and growth on a specific subject. Hence turning your learning, interests and passion into products and services for others to use. Personalities like Tess Begg, Blogilates, Tone It Up are commonly googled and youtubed regarding fitness and healthy eating. Some even offer services like consulting and coaching that can provide additional support to their followers.

PewDiePie, Zoella, Superwoman, Liza Koshy, Jenna Marbles, Tyler Oakley are some of the most watched personalities on YouTube all earning millions of dollars on an annual basis. So what’s the job description? Well, a YouTuber is a vlogger or video blogger who portrays information about a niche subject or show off something they’re confident in. Be it their life, travels, fashion, makeup, book reviews, parodies, fitness, a mockery, etc. The advantage is that you get to work your own hours and be your own boss. If you’ve got a bag of personality that people will enjoy watching and subscribe to, then YouTube is the place to be!

Websites like Coursera, Skillshare and OpenCourseWare (OCW) Consortium allow people to create and sell their courses. This gives people an alternative option to obtain necessary skills on various different subjects, software and gain technical knowledge. So you could easily create videos from your home with minimal items such as a laptop, camera and video editing software.

Don’t be afraid of trying something out of the traditional job box, if you have a talent or a passion go beyond and try to find a platform for it. Find your vision, work for it and ultimately be your own boss.

Creative Writing

IT’S NOT A BIG DEAL I have a question. Why do we care so much, as a society and as individuals, about changing parts of ourselves for the benefit of other people? It’s about time we started grasping the idea that our self-worth isn’t tied to what other people think of us. Last night, my dad was talking about things my mom had to do once we landed in Syria because of custom and tradition. I asked, “Why does she have to?” “That’s just how our society was built. That’s how we do things,” my dad replies. I shook my head, “No, I mean why do you care so much about the ‘customs and traditions?” -“We just have to abide by them.” -“Okay, but why? Who’s policing this stuff?” My father was stunned into silence. We’re so busy trying to empower young people, encouraging them to be themselves and not care about judgement, we sometimes forget that the older generation, though the cause of some of it, are its biggest victims. They all care so much. My mom refuses to sing or even hum in public even if a song she likes is playing in a store. “What will they think about me?” she’ll exclaim. Who are they? Why are we so afraid of them? Sorry, I must have missed the memo they sent declaring themselves the powers that be but I see no reason not to hum and give a little shimmy when my favourite song is playing. These people don’t know me – they don’t know my name or where I live or if I like my coffee black or with milk. I’m probably never going to see them again. Worst case scenario – they give me a weird look

see it. scan it. get it.

and go on about their day. Maybe they’ll tell their friends about the girl in sweatpants they saw busting some moves to Selena Gomez’s It Ain’t Me. Best case scenario – they laugh and join me. I know it’s easy to say all this but allow yourself to do these kinds of things a bit at a time. So what if someone is weirded out? Believe me, you would be the most interesting thing that will happen to them all day and they’ll just be surprised. We have to be super self-involved if we think everyone is looking at us and watching what we’re doing. Open your eyes and look around – everyone is dealing with, and thinking, about their own stuff (chances are they are worried you are looking at them). You’ll be a minor blip on their radar at most. Just have fun and try not to worry so much – no one else cares and you shouldn’t either. NOTE: This isn’t some random positive PSA about being yourself. Just a friendly reminder that you’re a tiny grain of sand in the middle of the desert and petty things aren’t as big a deal as you make them (looking at you, older generation. You’re never too old to have fun, take things with a grain of salt. Make this the norm. There shouldn’t be a shred of embarrassment felt when you’re having a little fun and just being. Exist in your happiest form, my friend, and do it unapologetically.

6 WAYS TO READ FASTER! Want to learn to read faster? How much more could you get done if you completed all of your required reading in one-third the time? Increase your reading speed with our six easy steps:

READ OUT LOUD FOR 15-20 MINUTES EVERYDAY Remember when we were younger our parents and teachers would make us read out loud? If this method helped to teach us how to read in the first place, then it can definitely help you read faster. Although this method might sound very cliché, it is effective. Reading aloud every day will naturally enhance your reading speed and you find yourself reading quickly in only a few months’ time. Moreover, reading aloud will enable you to read with diction and expression, which is also beneficial for your speaking voice.

AVOID SUBVOCALIZING Subvocalizing is when readers pronounce/ vocalize each word in their minds. This is one of the biggest hindrances in enhancing reading speed. To avoid doing this try reading while pointing a pen at a chunk of words, which will also help you to stop fixating on individual words. This way, your eyes will follow your action and enable you to read a lot faster.

AVOID “BACK-SKIPPING” While reading, avoid going back to previous words and dwell on their meaning. Fixating on individual words takes up a lot of time that could be spent reading more material. Learn to understand meanings of unfamiliar words by context, that is, read more chunks of text to interpret the meaning of words you don’t know. This will save you a lot of time and you will be able to read more lines in a shorter amount of time.

TRY USING APPS TO ACCELERATE READING SPEED Applications such as ‘Spreeder’, ‘ReadMe’, ‘Outread’ and ‘Accelerator’ are extremely useful to increase reading speed. Using these apps will not accelerate the rate at which you read but also your learning process. If you don’t want to try the conventional method or you are short on time, these applications will definitely come in handy.

by AARUSHI SHARMA

BE FOCUSED AND MINDFUL One of the best ways to read faster, while still understanding the material is to reduce the number of distractions around you. To do so, try making the material interesting for yourself, which will allow you to read actively rather than passively. Passive reading slows down reading pace and increases subvocalization and fixation.

DON’T READ EVERY SINGLE WORD In order to read quickly, do not spend a lot of time reading each word. Rather, focus on eye movement and scan over blocks of text to analyse it. The lesser time you spend on each word, the faster you will be able to read. In order to do this, instead of focusing on each of the words, focus on the content of those lines, by scanning through the words. You can easily scan

Restaurant Review

Trèsind: A Performance in the Culinary Arts Located in the Nassima Royal Hotel on the bustling Sheikh Zayed Road, Tresind serves innovative food with a modernistic take on Indian cuisine. Already renown for its molecular gastronomy since its opening three years ago, it is a restaurant where you don’t just go to eat, but to experience. The artistry of the food manages to encompass every sense at your disposal, right from the fruit-scented, bubbling urn that welcomes you to the paan flavoured cotton candy that refreshes you on your way out. With the launch of a new summer menu, we headed over to see if it lived up to Tresind’s usual hype. We started off with the well-known Deconstructed Pani Puri which was put together in edible sodium alginate. The ingredients had all the flavours of the traditional iteration, but the alginate solution gave it another level of awesome, lending the pani puri a fun jelly-like consistency. Our favourite appetiser was the Modernist Chaat Trolley. Watching the amalgamation of the dish was like viewing artwork come together. The chef highlighted the platter with strips of different sauces, chutneys and yoghurt and added other bits on top. Following this, he broke down a piece of frozen dhokla using liquid nitrogen and rehydrated it in front of our eyes. To cleanse the palate between courses, we were served a refreshing Lassi sorbet, which was reminiscent of eating kulfi on a hot summer day. With 4 main course dishes served alongside an assortment of Indian bread, we were spoilt for choice. Our favourite was the Prawn Koliwada with Malvani curry and Carrot Koshimbir salad. Succulent and rich in flavour, it was absolutely delicious. This was closely followed by the stuffed Chicken in Parsi Baida Roti. The curry was perfect in its consistency and flavour while the chicken was tender, well-cooked and the roti used to wrap it was utterly crisp. With the Khandvi Roll Gujurat Kadhi, the presentation and interior of the dish promised more than the taste delivered. Meanwhile, the supple, pulled Lamb Ghee Roast served with a crunchy Malabari parotta was an appetizing, yet traditional take that tasted a lot like home.

And of course, no dining experience is complete without dessert. The Raj Bhog and Summer Fruit Cream with Raspberry Blast was truly the icing on the cake; it was light and refreshing to chase down your meal. The blend of the fresh fruit cream, the tangy raspberry and the sweet bhog fit together like magic. The glorified presentation, almost ceremonial with its lotus pedestal, dry ice and cracking of the raspberry blast, hyped my expectations, and the taste of the dish far exceeded them. The Jalebi with Condensed Milk Fondue won marks in presentation, but the unbalanced sweetness meant that finishing even one milk-smothered jalebi was difficult. Pass. In the case of the Almond Halwa Tart with Almond Cremeux and Coffee Ice-Cream the elements all had stark tastes of their own, independently flawless, but perhaps not together. Our trip to Tresind was more than a meal, it was an experience. One that is definitely worth repeating. The staff was courteous, professional and friendly. The new summer menu was exciting and the showmanship was at its best. Kudos to Tresind and its staff for bringing a new level of creativity and innovation to the table!

A GASTRONOMICAL Success:

SpiceKlub

DRINKS Masala Mojito is Spiceklub’s refreshing take on lemon mint juice and Mango on the Rocks is Mango pulp solidified with nitrogenous gas, topped with mango juice. What more could a mango lover want? A yummy delicacy that can be eaten as well as sipped. It was definitely our favourite drink. Coconut water with assorted caviar tasted like finely shaved ice topped with rose flavoured caviar. It is a must try for coconut lovers. STARTERS Pani Puri served with test tubes and syringes?! Although it sounds like a crazy lab experiment it was one of our favourite dishes. The novelty of the idea makes the dish unforgettable. Papdi Chaat was one of the most interesting starters. They converted yoghurt into yoghurt spirit which is really light compared to normal heavy yoghurt. This sits on top of a papdi and the dish is garnished with coriander foam like a cherry on top. Pav Bhaji Fondue combined two things that could not be more different, within the dish the curry is consistently mixed with cheese fondue and served with toasted bread cubes. What a novel treat! MAIN COURSE Moti Paneer Makhni was extremely creamy and rich while the Vegetable Kadai goes perfectly with any kind of bread you order. DESSERTS Flower Pot is nothing like we have ever seen a desert look like. It is EXACTLY like its title. Ras Malai and Kesar Mousse as the soil, Belgian chocolate for the pot, served over a bed of pistachio granules. Talk about innovative right? Bubbling kulfi was dipped in liquid nitrogen and served with several delicious flavours like rose caviar, salted caramel, chocolate and blueberry sauce. The rock hard ice cream (kulfi) along with the myriad of flavours dance on your tongue and create a delightful sensation.

A huge shout-out to the amazingly professional and friendly staff at SpiceKlub. They took the time to explain to us all the dishes and presented each one with great care. For the price, the portion size was good and just right for a family of four. We recommend SpiceKlub for its unique take on molecular gastronomy and its value for money.

TV Show

TV SHOW ‘THIS IS US’ IS #LIFEGOALS! This Is Us, is one of those feel good television shows that make you appreciate family and the trivial moments of life. Packed with comedy and drama. All the episodes are widely relatable and the show brings to light obstacles that we encounter every day. Here is what we have learned:Life will eventually fall back into place after experiencing loss: Whether it was the third triplet’s death or William’s passing or Jack Pearson’s death, this show is built upon the concept of losing loved ones and learning to carry their loss as part of your identity and strength. Various fundamentals in the story follow the pattern loss creates in our lives. When we face loss, it’s felt forever, but this drama is an exceptional example of how life falls back into place, even if it’s not the way we imagined it. Self-acceptance allows you to be the best version of yourself: Kate’s character deals with issues regarding body image throughout the series. As she struggles to become the ideal body shape, the audience learns to value the importance of self-worth with her. In a generation where looks have become the deciding factor of an individual’s worth or possessions, this lesson reverberates to all those who struggle with self-acceptance. Forgiveness alleviates us: Randall, a character who has dealt with betrayal much of his life, is a prototypical example of how to react to it. He leads the perfect life- patient and hardworking in his career while being a loving father and husband at home. He carries these qualities with him whilst dealing with family members who have disheartened him. The audience witnesses his capacity to forgive and restore relationships he could have long forgotten.

see it. scan it. get it.

As a result, we learn that when we forgive we start to view the positive qualities in a person or reminisce in memories and experiences. All of which, makes us who we are. Our loved ones sacrifice bits of their life to give us the best: Because this is a family show, I think the most important message we learn is how much our loved ones, specifically parents, sacrifice for their children. Your family will always be there to love you: The one theme this series endorses is that ‘love isn’t perfect, but it’s still great’. Whether it was Jack turning any dull moment into an enjoyable one or Rebecca’s fierce protective nature towards her children, the series always portrays the power of love in a family during any situation. The Pearson couple tries to be there for their children to the best of their abilities just like all other parents.

Andrews presents us with an awkward and vehemently average teen- Greg Gaines, who has established a full proof system to survive the high school drama and make peace with all the different social groups. All is well until his mother makes him rekindle his friendship with suffering Leukemia patient, Rachel. Will Greg be able to retain his social invisibility or will he have to step into the limelight? This is not your traditional Young Adult book- there is no romance involved and Greg hardly sympathises with Rachel. Greg Gaines is the character we all love to hate. He makes no effort in understanding his peers or helping Rachel with her condition. He is perfectly average and represents the typical high school student. His awkwardness attracts readers and guarantees to make you laugh. The book is written in an exclusively mundane way which will only make you want to read it more.

The Handmaid’s Tale Margaret Atwood

This is a frightening and powerful book in which average women have no free will or individualism; they are treated as simple baby producing machines. This is a time when an oppressive regime was enforced upon them, and to deviate from the said standard results in a slow and agonising death. There’s no hope or joy for them, only perpetual subjugation. It’s challenging but exciting to try to make sense of all the frightening details that Atwood describes, and that’s one of the things that made this such a compelling read. The story progresses beautifully, as the details of the present unravel at the same time and with the same urgency as the events of the past, tracing a frighteningly believable path from our world to hers. Measuring about 6mm, the long stubble is kind of tricky to maintain compared to the short and medium counterparts as it has to be trimmed well to get rid of stray hairs, especially those that grow on the cheek and above Adam’s apple.

BEARD TRENDS TO CHECK OUT

Also known as the “standard” beard, the circle beard is a combination of moustache and rounded goatee beard styles. It looks tidy, making it a good option for men who would like to look presentable without letting go of their beard.

GARIBALDI Within the options of fullbeards, the Garibaldi is another popular choice. It is a little shorter than the Bandholz. The goal is to achieve a more roundish beard to complement oval face shapes. The moustache is kept trim while the beard is allowed to continue to grow as long as you desire.

FRIENDLY MUTTON CHOPS The friendly mutton chops are also referred to as the sideburns or side whiskers. You are basically channelling your inner Logan, aka, Wolverine.

SHORT STUBBLE

BALBO

The simplest among all the beard styles, the short stubble is something that you can easily maintain as there will be no “special method to achieve the look. It looks manly yet does not make you look untidy.

The Balbo is among the most popular beard styles these days. Robert Downey, Jr., sported the look in The Avengers and Iron Man.

VAN DYKE This beard style was derived from a popular Flemish painter from the 17th century, Anthony Van Dyke, as it was his signature look. It is a mixture of a goatee and a moustache, with a much delicate precision.

DUCKTAIL The Ducktail style of beard is another twist off the original full beard and gets its name from its appearance. You can easily see how much the bottom part resembles the tail of a duck.

University Tips

CHOOSING THE RIGHT INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Ah, choosing the right university – so much confusion. Especially when it’s a university abroad, and especially if you haven’t seen it before, which is the case most of the times. As if high school is not enough pressure, you now have to research even more – the country, the culture, the fees, the housing, the entry requirements…basically EVERYTHING. Yes, it’s quite hard not to feel terrified. If it’s any consolation, though, here are some of the things that you might want to keep in mind as you go through a process that is so uniquely your own.

DECIDE THE PLACE Each country has specific requirements so the first step in choosing the right university is narrowing down the place.

US and Canada • The university system involving majors and minors. • Students are required to take some prerequisite courses and declare their major only in the second year, while in Canada you can either declare your major in the first year or remain undeclared until you figure it out. • All universities require you to complete the SAT’s. • The undergraduate program is usually four years.

USE THE INTERNET, BUT DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING When deciding on which university to go to abroad, the internet is an important tool because you won’t have to be physically present to know what it’s like. YouTube has campus videos for most universities, which sure does help. However, on the other hand there are various sites that give the wrong information. You can also log on to www.ratemyprofessor.com and check out what students have to say about the faculty, curriculum, campus, and safety, to name a few.

WHERE YOU BELONG In the end, it doesn’t really matter what everyone says or thinks about the university. You decide!

So what really matters is the university that makes you feel like you belong. Talk to the admissions officer about campus life and activities. Join Facebook Groups. Talk to seniors who may not be in the same university, but in the same country, because they will be able to give you valuable information about the culture and lifestyle of the city you’re planning to study in.

by MERAL JAMAL

United Kingdom • Doesn’t involve majors and minors. • The UK requires TOEFL and/or IELTS. • Most undergraduate programs take three years to complete. Australia • Accepts TOEFL, IELTS and SAT. • The duration of the program depends on the university and course that you’re choosing.

DECIDE THE CRITERIA For some students, university abroad on a budget is more important, while other put an emphasis on ranking. Speak to your parents about the expenses and get in touch with your seniors who are studying abroad because that will give you a better idea of what to expect. After that, decide what is most important to you. Looking for the best universities on a budget? Well, there’s always scholarships. Whatever the criteria, always focus on what YOU want. There will be a lot of people with many opinions as to which university you should attend, but don’t make the mistake of listening to them.

High Doses of Vitamin B Tied to Lung Cancer Risk Men who took high doses of vitamin B6 and B12 supplements had a higher risk of lung cancer, and the association was highest among current smokers, according to a study published Tuesday. The study found a 30% to 40% increased risk of lung cancer among men taking these vitamins from individual supplements - not from multivitamins or diet alone. But the effect seemed to be driven by current smokers who far exceeded the recommended daily amounts of the vitamins, according to study author Theodore Brasky, an epidemiologist in the division of cancer prevention and control at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Researchers created an App that Could Detect the Early Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

App Translates Human Speech Into Elephant Language so You Can Help Save Species

The app, “BiliScreen,” uses a smartphone camera, computer vision algorithms and machine learning tools to detect increased bilirubin levels — reddish yellow pigment formed by the breakdown of red blood cells — in a person’s white part of the eye. Jaundice, the yellow discolouration of the skin, causes a rise in bilirubin levels before it’s visible to the naked eye. However, researchers found BiliScreen is able to detect colour changes in the eye as people take a selfie.

“Hello in Elephant” is a smartphone app that can translate texts, expressions, and phrases into its basic elephant language counterpart. This means that instead of saying “I love you” or “I’m happy” to your partner, you can send them a sound clip of an elephant expressing the same sentiment. The organization hopes that by bridging the language barrier between humans and the endangered species, users will be more likely to donate towards their survival.
