occoni is challenging: there’s a lot of studying, the subjects are new and unknown, the courses short but intense, the programmes extensive, the exams one after the other, sometimes even the day after; there are group projects, thousands of deadlines, and during the exam session you can feel the stress, you start doubting everything and it’s not easy to stay focused. Another thing, you can’t refuse grades: you get what you get, which is like saying that in a 42 kilometres marathon you can’t trip even once. All of this might raise the question: “What even made me do it?”. If what you read above, the vox populi or the fear of failing didn’t scare you enough to make you stop reading, withdraw from the studies and open a bar in Civita di Bagnoregio (or a Chupiteria in Mykonos), we want to give you some points of views, that maybe will not show you what made you do it, but, probably, will make you realize that it’s worth it.

Since 2013 we managed to go beyond Sarfatti’s walls: for the first time a Bocconian has been elected at the CNSU (National Board of University Students), the most relevant body entirely dedicated to the needs of the universities’ students, based in Rome. This amazing result, that we replicated in 2016 with the second Bocconian elected in this position, is the fruit of an important collaboration that had us protagonists with Unilab – Svolta Studenti, a network of representatives, independent from parties or religions politics, with the aim of meeting the main needs of the students. B.lab is not just numbers though. It’s a world to discover entirely. It’s pure and simple representation done every day, from the daily questions to the most demanding ones.

It’s worth it because, by choosing Bocconi, you chose a university that will demand a lot, it’s true, but will give you back just as much: quality learning, updated programmes, world-class professors and so on… But if you’re here, it means that you already know these things, and you’re probably looking for further explanations. Here you have them: by choosing Bocconi, you chose Milan, a lively, dynamic, and multicultural city, full of opportunities, 15 years ahead on the rest of Italy. You chose to get out of your comfort zone. But, most importantly, you chose to join the Bocconi community. Walking through the campus, you will hear students talking in dozens of different languages and dialects about various topics; students who take part in the associations’ life, organizing events, conferences and parties with serious professionalism. If all of this left you doubting again if it’s worth it or not, feel free to contact us: we’ll be more than happy to answer any question and help you understand, at least in the beginning, the complex and incredible world of the University. We’ve all been through this, actually… In the meanwhile, we leave you this small guide with the necessary to survive the first weeks in Bocconi, and, by doing it, we give you a last advice: go for it! You’re going down a totally new path: if you won’t be afraid and you’ll face it bravely, you will fully enjoy the experience that Bocconi University offers, inside and outside the classrooms, and you will be a member of its student community. And now we can finally tell you: welcome to Bocconi.

Matteo Giugovaz - Raffaele Sepe 6

.lab is the historic group of representation in Bocconi. In the last few years, B.lab achieved some record results: the ma jority of the representatives elected in the collegial bodies and the students’ representative at the Board of Administration of the University.

creative It’s 360° dynamism, innovation and a will of improving ourselves, always. In the years we had the pleasure of organizing conferences with important public figures, visits to companies, revision of the most difficult subjects by setting up the Peer2Peer service, which makes exams less terrifying, along with our summaries. But we never forget about the fun: sold-out parties in Parco Ravizza, on the occasion of B.lab2ThePark, the skiing holiday at Skilab and so much more!

It’s an experience that radically transforms you: in the beginning it’s normal to feel lost in a Campus so vast and competitive, full of high-risk challenges. It’s exactly in that moment that you have to go for those tests that we will meet on our path. B.lab is an amazing stepping stone: it’s the demonstration that even if you’re shy, introverted, trapped by the anxiety of the newness, you can overcome your fears. How? With the power of an immense group of friends, that will convince you that believing in yourself and having some courage is not actually that hard. You don’t believe this? Proof is the pudding: let’s meet at the first open meeting of the year! Valeria Cosmai 7

mathematicsprecourses Y

Attending the precourses does not only offer the opportunity to review basic maths and maybe to clear some doubts, but most importantly to have a little taste of the University’s world; you will have the possibility of seeing how lectures are given and of getting used to the different types of teaching before starting the actual classes.

ou haven’t studied much math in high school and you’re afraid you won’t have a solid preparation for the mathematics exam? You have studied a lot of math in your high school years, but this summer made you forget even additions and subtractions? Don’t worry, Mamma Bocconi takes care of everything, even of making you ready to face your first semester of university.

From the month of July, in fact, you will find twenty-two video lessons on BlackBoard, regarding the first topics of review, and during Welcome Week there will be actual revision classes of Math, twelve hours (fifteen for BIG) spread in a week, during which the most difficult topics will be revised. The combination of videos and classes will guarantee a complete and solid preparation to face all the courses with no problem.

There’s also a book that deals with the precourses’ topics, but if you pay attention in class, the notes you will take will be more than enough.

x -y-z

You will move from a building to another, and in doing so you will start discovering the campus, you will know your future classmates, and start making some friends already, so that you won’t be alone the first days of classes and have someone with whom you will walk for thirty minutes before finding the bathroom in Velodromo (and before realizing that it’s a circular building).

So, even if you had 10/10 in Math in high school, attend some lectures and see how this hectic university world works: you’ll have a small taste of what the next three years are going to be like. Isabella Bastiani

languagecerti f ications COURSES IN ITALIAN

CONVERTING CERTIFICATIONS

The objective of the 1st year undergraduate course taught in Italian is the achievement of a B2 level in a foreign language. English is usually chosen, but there are some alternatives, such as French, Portuguese, Spanish and German. In the 2nd year, on the other hand, students have to reach the B1 level in a second foreign language, among French, Portuguese, Spanish or German.

Certification scores can be converted into specific grades in thirtieths, replacing the curricular exam, both for the 1st and 2nd languages, only if they respect certain requirements (type of certification, level required by the study plan of the degree program, etc.), that you can find on the website. The certification can be converted within three years from getting it (two years for TOEFL), and you can already convert certifications for both the first and the second language.

COURSES IN ENGLISH

ielts

The aim of the 1st year undergraduate course taught in English is to achieve a B2 level in a foreign language among French, Portuguese, Spanish, German and Italian (only if you are not a native speaker); if you choose English, then the minimum level to be achieved will be the C1. In the 2nd year students have to reach the B1 level in a second foreign language, among French, Portuguese, Spanish, German or Italian.

Passing the English exam (or, for some goals, of another specific foreign language) is a pre-requisite for being able to participate in the exchange program and carry out a semester of the third year abroad, fourth or fifth year if you’re a CLMG student. For some of these goals it is also necessary to have a specific international certification, such as IELTS. For this reason, and for the fact that those who possess an international certification have an additional advantage even in the world of work, many students prefer to achieve IELTS instead of taking the internal Bocconi exam. Furthermore, Bocconi is also an official test centre for IELTS, DELF B1 (French) and DELE B1 (Spanish), whose preparatory courses usually start in the second semester of the year.

EXTRACURRICULAR COURSES

Emanuele Cabiale

In Bocconi you will also have the opportunity to take part in various integrative activities, including: - Language and Culture Courses (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian) which, starting from A1 level, give students the opportunity of becoming familiar with a new language, improving their knowledge, and eventually obtaining a certificate after the final exam. - English Soft Skills Workshops; - Preparation course for Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

ecdl Each degree course has a Computer Science exam in the second semester and in order to take that exam you need an Informatics prerequirement: the ECDL. The ECDL is a certificate that attests the basic informatics skills of the student and it’s made of 7 modules: Computer Essentials, Online Essentials, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, IT Security, Presentation and Online Collaboration. It’s necessary to pass an exam for each module: there’s no order for taking the exams and it doesn’t affect the final outcome. It’s a mandatory certification, not optional, and it’s strongly recommended to start taking care of it immediately since it’s not that hard to pass and you have more time to plan the exams!

You can take the certificate on your own or in the university, since Bocconi is an official Test Center of ECDL. You need to buy a New Skills Card ECDL (60 ) on which you will register the single modules once you pass them. Each module, in case you don’t pass it, can be taken again with no limits of time or/and trials, but you will have to pay again for each exam (18 ). Bocconi makes available to all the students an online course, both in English and in Italian, on BlackBoard, to help you prepare for the exams. Once you pass all the exams of the certification, SEDIN will send you the PDF of the certificate to your Bocconi email, within a month after the last module’s exam. You don’t have to print it to take the curricular exams, but all you need is to receive the message - on the You@B agenda – that attests that you meet the requirement. If you already have it or have an alternative certification recognized by Bocconi (you find them on the website), take it easy! Malvina Meta

schools undergraduateschool CLEAM, CLEF, CLEACC, BIEM, BIEF, BESS, BIG, BEMACC, BEMACS: these are many acronyms which mean the same thing: bachelor’s degree. Starting with the orientation and continuing on the Bocconi website you probably know pretty well which your program will be, but you might not know yet which extra activities to join in the next three years. Here are some suggestions: - Welcome Week: You will have so many choices! Many associations propose an event to present themselves, but not only: try to participate to the sport events and build your network of friendships during some of the many Aperitivos organized. Keep in mind that the friendships you build in your first year will be the ones you will carry in your heart forever. - Bocconi app: It’s available both for iPhone and Android. In it, you will find everything about Bocconi. So, keep it close at hand. Class timetable, calendars, exam grades, registration for the exam session: all of this is necessary! Moreover, if you activate the notifications, you will be advised when the time to sign up for the exams is almost over.

- Partials vs Generals: The first partial is like a parachute: nothing bad could happen, so why not try it? If it doesn’t go as you like, the general is not an impossible obstacle: a good preparation will make you face it with serenity. Furthermore, since last year, the university allows you to do the second partial in one of the two rounds of your choice. Be really careful about the rules to sign up for them. 14

- grades: If you download the Bocconi App, at the end of the session you will receive the grade through a notification, otherwise you will find it in the agenda. The grade average in Bocconi is around 26, to graduate with 110 with honors is necessary an average of at least 28.9. Get informed as soon as possible about the requirements to apply for the exchange program, the second degree or some other professional sectors. Also, remember that you need 24 credits for passing the first year, so be careful!

- Stage: A stage on the curriculum can be approved as an optional exam of the third year. When is more appropriate to do it? The best times are the summer between the first and second year as well as the one between the second and third, but nothing forbids to do it even during the lessons months. If you are interested, go to the Career Service or try to consult the Jobgate section in the You@B app. Break a leg! Claudia Roma Federico Inverardi

school of law

“ Y

S

But like, I just got into Bocconi and you’re already stressing me with graduate school?”.

ome say that in Bocconi the future comes a little bit before than anywhere else, you will decide if this is true or not! In any case, ever since your first day of lectures, you will taste some of the determination and the resourcefulness that characterize every single member of our great community and that are embodied in forward-looking and unique realities, such us our CLMG, the five-year course of Law that the university offers to its students, for almost twenty years.

es, I know, it may sound premature in the beginning of your Undergraduate years, but I assure you that it’s important to start thinking, as soon as possible, about the continuation of your studies. In the Milanese University – you’ll notice very soon – time seems to flow faster than the normal, and this article is written with a very clear purpose: sensitise you on planning these three years getting ready for an eventual Master’s Degree in Bocconi.

This course of studies is a journey inside the modern law, that will not just stop on the old institutes, following teaching methods already obsolete, but will focus on the new borders of legal studies, economics, and internet technology in primis, with a smarter eye on the labour market.

Currently Bocconi offers 12 Master’s Degrees, in the fields of Economics, Management, Finance, Data Science, and Political Science, with flexible and customizable study plans, interactive teaching, and qualified professors; for further and detailed information on every single Master’s Degree course, the classes or the top recruiters of each course, I advise you to check the website and the dedicated brochure for the Graduate School. The most useful advice I can give you is: do what you love! During the upcoming semesters, try to find out which exams make your eyes sparkle, in relation to what you want to do when you grow up and the profession you want to have. GPA is the most important thing to get into a Master’s Degree course; it will be weighed based on the number of credits of each exam.

Dealing with a Master in this university means living a complete learning experience under every aspect: besides studying in one of the best universities in Europe and in the world, it means joining a global network, benefiting from qualified relationships with the top employers all over the five continents, and being a full member of an international community. Last, but maybe most important: put yourself out there! Make the best out of every opportunity Mamma (yes, you’re going to start calling it this way) Bocconi has to offer: associations, events, seminaries, conferences, and extracurricular meetings; everything can pave the way for growing and making your ideas always clearer on the several Graduate School courses. I wish good luck for this new experience, see you around! Giuseppe Sarno

16

In your first years, you will deal with exams of classic law, alternated with economics and informatics exams, and because of this, having the ECDL certificate from the beginning can be an important advantage. Moreover, since Bocconi University promotes diversity and encourages every student to pursue their passions, starting from the fourth year you will have the opportunity of personalizing your university studies by choosing between one of the three Ma jors offered: International Track (dedicated mainly to the European Law and the International Law), Forense (that is focused on the classic disciplines of law), and Impresa (the course that deals with the commercial and the banking worlds).

tips 1.

Keep an eye on the prerequisites! There are exams in our course that, if not taken, do not allow you to sign up for following exams.

2.

Keep an eye on the credits as well! If you want to make sure that you passed the first year of the course, it’s necessary that you have 24 credits by July. Roberta Monasterolo

change of program M

aking the right choice, especially having the several options that our University offers, is not always easy. But thanks to the new regulations of the change of program, effective starting from this academic year, you have all the time to rethink it! You can make the request to change course of studies already at the end of the first year, or at the end of the third semester (December 2019, circa), at the end of the second or the third year.

? In order to apply, you need to have achieved, by July 2019, 24 credits. To pass to courses taught in English from courses taught in Italian, you also need to have a language requirement: a C1 certification or a grade equal or superior to 26/30 at the English internal exam, to achieve before June 2019.

c1 english

24 cfu

The procedure to apply for the change is pretty easy: you need to fill out a form, on which you can put two preferences of courses, and send it to the Academic Affairs Division Desk, in the period July – August 2019.

If you’re convinced of the change you want to make, and you’re already asking yourself if and which exams you’ll have to recover or integrate in order to change from one course to the other, you will only need to check the dedicated table of conversion in the Guide of the University. 18

occoni University provides for its students eight residence halls for the academic year 2018/2019

From the closest to the university:

Bocconi residence hall -pensionato-)::The oldest of the residences, it’s known among other things for its dining hall and the amazing spirit that bonds it tenants. Bligny: Opened in September 2016, this shining new residence is right in front of the Velodromo building. Castiglioni: inaugurated in September 2018, it will be

Along with the most important Universities and social or economic organizations in the world, Bocconi University provided students and professors with a “Honor Code”, a ethic code that can be found on the official website together with a Code for the correct use of electronic devices. Build up a strong ethical sense, in addition to a solid knowledge, is part of Bocconi’s “mission” and that’s why you can’t consider yourself part of the Bocconi world as long as you don’t share its values: indipendence, ethic, transparency, freedom, equity, solidarity, promotion of diversity, focus on merit and development of individual abilities, professionality and push towards quality, social responsibility. These are the founding principles to the Honor Code, that you’ll be asked to sign on your agenda (you@B) and then everytime you take an exam.

The administrative body that ensures the respect of the aforementioned Codes is the Disciplinary Commission made up of the Graduate, Undergraduate and Law Schools’ Dean, the director of Academic Affairs Division, the director of ISU Bocconi and two students’ representatives, among the five elected to the Faculty Council. Possible violations of the Code are examined by the Commission, that examines the violation and might start the procedure that leads to the penalty. Students involved are summoned, with a communication on the Agenda, and will be allowed to defend themselves from the accusations.

the center of the new campus.

Javotte: the smallest among the residences, offers a fully equipped music room. Dubini: Situated at 10 minutes walking distances, offers an internal courtyard and is really close to an Esselunga.

Spadolini: Situated next to Dubini, offers an internal garden to alleviate the long study days! Isonzo: its 10-story tower offers an incredible view over Milan.

Arcobaleno:

the most international residence, it’s situated 15 minutes by tram from the university. All the residences are equipped with heating, air conditioning and Wi-Fi connection for two devices. A weekly cleaning service is also guaranteed, which includes a change of sheets, pillowcases and towels. All residence halls are accessible for everybody from 7.00 am to 12.00pm. It’s always necessary to leave a document at the front desk.

At the end of the fact-finding part, Commission decides whether to dismiss the case or start the penalty procedure. The decision taken will then be effective only after the approval of the Academic Board. Personal tip: read the various Codes (Honor Code and Code for the correct use of electronic devices) on Bocconi website, prevention is better than cure! Antonino Di Lullo

Representation Y

ou’re a freshman. On the first day of your first year at Bocconi go for a walk in via Roentgen, stop in front of the Velodromo, take a look at Leoni and breath a different air, an air of change, full of news. Time passes by and you realize that Bocconi is not just classes and exams but a field of free experimentation in which you’ll be involved to define your ideal role. Each one of us should never be content, but instead we should go to university aiming to find out what we can do to make our journey useful, unique and dynamic; we should always look for new adventures and exploit all the opportunities offered by our university.

F

or those who have always dreamed of representation, those who put the group before themselves, those who have already had experiences at high school or decide only now to focus on this world, the right moment to get involved arrives quickly. During the last two weeks of September and the first days of October every class has to choose two representatives among whom, later, will be chosen the representative of the course. All those who wish to take part have to send their candidature through the YOU@B agenda, which is also the way candidates will be voted on a specific day defined by the university; each one of you will be able to vote up to two candidates and the two with more votes will automatically be elected. Being representatives on your first year is only a little step to enter the great world of representation at Bocconi, where students’ opinion is heard and considered precious. Our university has, in fact, students representatives at the collegiate bodies, the representative of students at the Board of Administration (CDA) of the university, and even the possibility to compete against other Italian universities for a position at CNSU, the national council of university students, based in Rome. In conclusion, representation on your first year is only the first step through an important path that provides obligations, duties and responsibilities, but gives gratification through the awareness of being an essential part of a bigger puzzle that exists also thank to your little but fundamental contribution. sport in bocconi B

occoni is not only studying and lectures, it’s also about sport and having fun. All the activities connected with this area of university life are managed by Bocconi Sport Team (BST), our university sport club.

The activities don’t stop here, there are a lot of sport events and conferences (with some guests like Javier Zanetti, Demetrio Albertini or Massimiliano Rosolino), all during the year, also with the help of the different associations that operate on this area.

To start, it’s good to know that some sports (such as volleyball, basket, football etc.) are regulated exclusively by BST, whereas others are fruit of collaborations with external clubs (for example rugby and tennis). Even the level is widely diversified: there are both competitive teams (like the C2 Male Basketball Team or the B2 Male Volleyball Team) and amateur teams (like the female volleyball team).

During the year there are also different activities to promote sport in the university. We are talking about the “Sports Day”, that could be divided in:

Bocconi Sports Day: it’s a day

(usually in April) in which you can challenge other students in Basketball, Volleyball, Football and Ping Pong tournaments inside the university;

Bocconi Sailing Days:

It’s a weekend entirely dedicated to sailing, to have some relax and take a break from studying by making a trip on the beautiful Italian sea with your colleagues;

Bocconi Soccer Cup:

it’s a tournament played on the Bocconi football field located inside the “Pensionato Bocconi”, in which you can challenge the best Bocconi players.

28

To have further information, you must know that BST’s headquarters are in Via Bocconi 12, inside the “Pensionato Bocconi”. Here you can find all the useful info about the several options. Obviously, this is not the only way. You can also contact the club at the e-mail address: bocconisporteam@unibocconi.it, or on the Facebook page (it is strongly recommended to like this page to stay updated on the activities), or on Bocconi’s website. If you have other doubts or curiosities, don’t hesitate to contact me on my Facebook profile: I’ll be more than happy to answer all your questions! Michele Frigerio

unilab I

unilabber

f the “B” of B.lab is for Bocconi… with Unilab we think even bigger! In 2013 we founded, with students of six universities, Unilab SvoltaStudenti: a new independent network between university associations, a sort of start-up of the representation, whose motto is “enough ideologies: only good ideas, for objectives at all costs” …and it’s been more successful than we thought! In the last two sessions, in fact, we elected two National Counsellors, and in both of them the first to be elected has been a Bocconian.

S

tatale: chaotic, lively and giant, Statale is a perfect environment for who wants to carry out in their university, as a Bocconian friend told me, a “revolution for the many”. Who are the many? They’re the many people living in the several areas of Milan, and not only, who try to make it in a teaching system not always efficient and convenient. I guess it’s obvious that Statale is not Bocconi and that it was hard for us thinking that the same values could make a difference in such opposite situations. But fighting for the change of “the many” as members of the Network of Unilab, made us realize that all of us students’ representatives are inextricably linked by the will of changing what could make our university life harder and less satisfying. Being representatives in Statale means making a difference in the name of the innovation and the internationality, by putting ideas together, sometimes opposite to each other, for a common goal.

From our university we have the possibility of getting in the game and have a say in it with the students of Politecnico, Cattolica, Statale, IULM and University of Insubria… and the network is growing all around Italy! Trust me, it’s a unique opportunity to live Milan to the fullest.

P

olitecnico: being representatives in a university of 45k students, divided in two huge campuses and countless buildings, can often mean losing sight of the full picture of the university life in Politecnico. A challenge to collect day after day that becomes intriguing when you find out that in each course there are students with a story behind and a melting pot of different cultures to set the most cosmopolite cities to envy us. Unilab in Politecnico becomes SvoltaStudenti, a students’ union that cares not only about representing students and putting their needs first, but also of organizing moments of socialization and fun, using not only the areas in the campus but also the nearby places. Carlo, Alessandro, and all the other guys are waiting to guide the group, as always free from ideologies and absolutely independent!

C

30

If, on one hand, we can work on topics of national relevance at the Ministry (from the right to study to the credits of Private Law for Economics courses), on the other hand we’re living unique opportunities to open up to the other universities and the city of Milan. What to say, then? Unilab SvoltaStudenti is the proof that in Milan and in Bocconi it’s better to be positive: think big, ready to have fun… and let’s get it started!

attolica: it’s an historic university, not only in the environment, but also in the tradition. This is a brief description of Cattolica University of the Sacred Heart, that, right in the middle of Milan (but not only), sees 25k students inside of it, all bound to the sense of belonging to the place where they study. Representing students is not an easy job because of this: the degree courses are so many and the needs usually contrasting, the administrative deadlines are very often strict, and so what? Unilab – Il cambiamento, in Cattolica, is the group that focuses, without any kind of ties, on putting the students first and making their university path more peaceful. A challenge which is not easy, that’s true, but as always, when the bar is high, the satisfaction once you achieve the result is even higher!

students’ associations O

ne of Bocconi’s biggest perks lies on the fact that it is not only about academics. Everyone can find a way to pursue his or her interests throughout their university years.

What choices do I have? The range of associations in Bocconi is quite wide and they often focus on areas related to Bocconi’s ma jors, but they’re not the only ones! Let’s see. First, we have the consulting associations. Some of them prepare you for tackling interviews with consulting companies and also organize networking events with prestigious entities. On the other hand, there are associations, including some with a global presence, that will help you gain first-hand experience by doing actual consulting through providing non-profits with consulting services, that way after Bocconi, you are ready to succeed in that prestigious consulting job you’ve been dreaming about. Finance kids, do not be sad just yet. There are a lot of associations for you too. Some of the ma jor finance associations focus on the general news revolving around the financial world, whereas some are focused in niche areas of the financial services and focus solely on that. It is up to you to decide where you will fit in better. Not a big finance or consulting person? No problem! You can find associations dealing with themes such as Law, marketing, entrepreneurship, technology, fashion, public administration, sports management, social sciences, politics. If you want to have a break from studying and follow your passions, in Bocconi you can find anything: from music to dance, motorbikes to philosophy, wine to gastronomy, public speaking to volunteering... getting bored will be hard!

Why should I join associations?

A

ssociations are the best way to spend your time outside of classes.

First of all, you will be learning a lot, including many concepts that are not taught in the classroom. Some associations are professional and give you a taste of the real job, whereas others allow you to acquire competencies in other fields and let you have fun with people who share the same interests with you.

Second, you will be meeting a lot of people. The people you meet in associations will be people with whom you have the same goals, so you will

Last, but not least, the competitiveness for prestigious jobs is increasing with time, and you need a way to differentiate yourself. Having a good GPA is not going to cut it when it comes to getting your dream job. In order to appeal to companies, you will need something that shows that you are not only an academic person but that you also care about what you’re doing, and associations are the best way to do so. Gentian Kuqica

Still not finding somewhere you fit in? Start your own association! Find other students who might be interested, write your statute following the regulations of the University, collect some signatures, and you can form your own association.

media center “Everyone gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense”. Gertrude Stain And this is an actual risk here in Bocconi, thanks to the very efficient media, that covers press, radio and television. At the ground floor of Pensionato Bocconi you can find Radio Bocconi, Bocconi TV and “Tra i Leoni” (between the lions) our university’s newspaper. Radio Bocconi was born in 2008 as the official web radio of our university and nowadays it broadcasts live 15 hours every day, the programs go from musical deepening, to information or entertaining. You can’t miss the Radio Bocconi Day: an entire day of live broadcast with special guests and in the evening an amazing party in Velodromo with a DJ-set, kind of a disco, but in the same place where we attend lessons in the morning. Bocconi TV has been part of the Bocconi’s associations since 2010: its programming goes from entertaining web series, to interviews with professors or important speakers at events and conferences, to cooking programs or the daily news and last but not least, the funny and well known entertaining program “Pressure Test”. The programs come out with different frequency, weekly or monthly and they are all uploaded on the association’s Youtube channel “BocconiTV”. Before radio and television in Bocconi was born the student’s newspaper “Tra i Leoni”. The newspaper is about everything that happens in our university and outside, politics, satire, economy, culture and so much more. The articles are available on the blog www.traileoni.it, or published on paper monthly.

Media Center’s associations kindly invite you to check their pages on Facebook and Instagram, to have fun and truly understand what they actually do. But, most of all, Radio Bocconi, Bocconi TV e “Tra i Leoni” hope you will join their teams, so you will be able to give your contribution to information here in Bocconi. Bianca Lombardozzi

APERITIVO NEARBY I

t was way back in September 2016 (feels like a lifetime), and even I, as a freshman, during every lunch break, moved through bars, restaurants, and canteens, in order to find something to eat quickly before going back to the next class. Out of some generosity I decided to give you a few advices to help you choose, so that you won’t spend 10 of your 30 minutes running between Velodromo and Piazza Sraffa, looking for places that will serve you lunch, dinner, or for a simple study break:

loop Loop is the first place nearby Bocconi where I’ve been (so the affection I have is more than justified). It’s literally 2 minutes and 14 seconds away from Bocconi (time measured counting the steps of a lazy and slow person, I swear to god it’s not me), and it’s perfect for breakfasts (IF YOU ASK FOR IT, THEY GIVE WATER WITH THE COFFEE) and for the many breaks that you will really, really, really need during these long months that are waiting for you (I’m not giving you anxiety, no no). Where is it: via Sarfatti, 1, 20136 Milano MI

porter house On a five minutes’ walk from Dubini and Spadolini (and ten minutes from our university, right after Parco Ravizza), Porter House is an amazing place for dinners and aperitivos. Great food, great drinks, great beer and wine, and most importantly (my favorite part), there are plenty of live performances (how beautiful are live performances? Let’s talk about it please). For any kind of night out, Porter House absolutely deserves a visit from you.

offi cine sbiellate Let’s get serious: it’s Tuesday evening, you don’t have plans, there are no parties, your friends suggest staying home and play Monopoly like real 80 years old economists, when suddenly, here comes the enlightenment: OFFICINE SBIELLATE. What are those? Where are they? What do they do? Do they fix cars? Many questions, too many, when the answer is offered by the pub with a very good unfiltered Ichnusa. Officine Sbiellate are the brewery that the Bocconi deserves, and that he desperately needs (soundtrack of The Dark Knight playing in the background).

Where is it: 20, Via Pietro Teuliè, 20136 Milano MI

THE EXPERT’S SUGGESTIONS It’s fundamental, every Tuesday, to spend your evening at Officine. Why? Well, there will be all your friends (and if they’re not there, are they really your friends?), there’s buffet included with the beer (it’s my dinner once a week), and most importantly, on Tuesday beer costs three euros. I’m not kidding: only for you, beer costs just three euros! Now I have to stop because I feel like Ma-

OTHER ADVICES These are just few advices on where to go near Bocconi. But, as a venerable and old student of the third year (I feel the weight of these years on me), my advice for you, especially if you’re not from Milan, is this: discover the beautiful city that Milan is, walk around and explore it in all its facets. If you have never been here, the ideal to start your discovery is City Life area (reachable by metro M5) or Porta Garibaldi area (take the tram 9 from the Uni, towards Porta Genova, and from there M2 till Garibaldi). If you liked this small guide of mine, if you want to insult me, if you have any advice, or if you’re interested in some other good place of Milan, don’t hesitate to text me on my social accounts, or, if you hate the 21st century, you can also send me a fax. tips 1 - Attendance

4-APPandsurroundings

S

When in Milan there are many apps that you cannot miss: those to order food at home or those for bike and car sharing, but most importantly the university app, where you’ll receive messages from the university and you’ll find the calendars of your courses, all the main information as well as the canteens’ menus. Download it and use it! Moreover, on our website there are some useful tutorials on how to sync the app calendar with the one of your phone.

ince I’m from Naples, being ten minutes late is basically a lifestyle for me and I know that being on time for classes sometimes can be hard: sleep, night study sessions, disco and other night “commitments” … being in class at 8.45 can be very very annoying. You’ll often leave your bed like you had just been fired, but I advise you to attend classes as much as possible: at least it is a great way of starting new friendships! PS: in many courses attendance is registered with a code released by the professor that has to be inserted into the university app or website; be careful, don’t try to cheat on this because then you could have serious troubles with the disciplinary commission.

5 - Important deadlines On the PUNTO BLU section of YOU@B you’ll find the MAVs and their deadlines: for every extra day after the deadline day there are penalties to be paid, so be careful! Another important but different deadline is that of 24 CFU: every exam has a value defined in CFU, to pass your first year you’ll have to collect at least 24 of them before the end of July (September is not available)… it is easier than you may think but as always don’t take it easy.

2 - Study I beg you, don’t leave everything for the end as I have always done: it harms your health, and your personal relationships as well. The main thing is to find your own pace of study: there’s no magic formula, some study throughout the whole night meanwhile others wake up at six o’clock, some prefer to study alone while others in small groups, there’s also someone who feels cool at writing on windows like John Nash in “A Beautiful Mind”, see to believe. Jokes aside, Bocconi offers the Library with bookable study rooms, the Bunker, many seats in Velodromo as well as in Leoni, study rooms in the Egea book shop and in all the residences: use them as much as you can!

3 - Exams, Office Hours and Paper Show Exams, Office Hours and Paper Show For each exam, apart from studying, you’ll have to register through the PUNTO BLU section of YOU@B, reachable only by the site. Obviously when preparing for an exam you could have doubts or misunderstandings: don’t forget to contact your professor or tutor for further explanations. After every exam there’s the paper show: I advise you to go every time, to understand your mistakes, but avoid going there hoping for a better grade, it doesn’t work (scientifically proven).

38

6 - Badge Your badge will be like the password of the common room of Gryffindor: it is necessary to get into Bunker and into the library, to print with MyPrint, and it is extremely necessary to take the exams. Try not to lose it but in case you do, you’ll be able to request another one; don’t complain about your photograph, we’re all a little bit ugly.

7 - To Social-ise Social medias are extremely useful for your university life: on WhatsApp and Facebook you’ll find specific groups for your class and other generic groups where other students share notes, slides and questions. As well as social medias, you better frequently check your university e-mail. PS: B.lab frequently updates its Facebook and Instagram pages in order to share the most important and recent information on the university.

8 - bboard Name aside (really original don’t you think? We’ve chosen it with an online referendum and in my opinion Slideville would have been much cooler), BBoard will quickly become a steady figure during your university years in Bocconi, even more than the pizza of the day at the Leoni canteen: there you’ll find all the slides, the exercises, the documents necessary to prepare your exams as well as your professors’ messages and a lot of other stuff… check it out frequently!

9 - Platform 9 without 3/4 Okay there’s not the metro outside the university because the whole world hates us and wants us to walk and burn calories, but don’t panic because we’re well connected: there’s the tram 9 that goes from Porta Genova to Centrale, the tram 15 that goes from Rozzano (somewhere not well defined) to Duomo and with only few minutes on foot there are the metro stops, particularly Crocetta, Missori and Porta Romana, that are all on the yellow line. Very close to us stops the most famous bus of Milan as well, the lines 90 and 91, that follows the perimeter of the city 24/7; I would not recommend it at night though.

10 - Enjoy it It may seem a stupid, obvious and useless advice and it is also one of those sentences you usually hear from elders, just like me at the fifth year of university, but your years in Bocconi will be wonderful, priceless, sometimes hard but surely exciting. Sometimes take a minute to stop and enjoy the view before getting back on your books. Good luck for everything, especially for your math exam!
