A brief guide for inexpert freshmen

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION... Many human beings ask themselves essential questions about life: who am I? Where do we come from? What the sense of life is... In the same way, every year each Bocconi freshman has some fundamental questions:

Where's Velodromo? What the hell does 'PuntoBlu' mean? And, most of all, where can I go to party hard? We all passed through this period: we felt uncomfortable, confused, lost; so, in order to answer to these and many other questions about exams, life in Bocconi and events, a group of students decided to write down this brief guide. Let me be clear: any information you'll find here is taken from Bocconi website, summarized and rewritten in a shorter and more compact way. We've written down some useful Hints & Tips about Campus, exams, web agenda, exchange, things to know about living in Italy, spare time and many other topics; there could be some mistakes, but we think that's the best sum-up possible in order to have a first overall insight of the University. In case you are not satisfied, you're curious or you just want to get more precise information, you just have to contact us (see last page)!

Enjoy your reading!

VALERIA’S INTRODUCTION‌ B.lab is Bocconi's historical students' union. For some years now, B.lab has achieved record-worthy targets: the majority of representatives elected in all of the collegial bodies and the students' representative at the Board of Directors. Since 2013 we have also been able to go beyond Sarfatti's walls: for the first time a Bocconi student has been elected to the National Council of University Students (CNSU in Italian), the most relevant representative body, entirely dedicated to university students' needs, located in Rome. We also doubled this achievement in 2016, with the second Bocconi student to be chosen for this position. But B.lab is not only a matter of numbers. It is a new world, ready to be discovered. It is pure and simple students' representation, from day-to-day activities to the most complicated situations. B.lab is about constantly trying to enhance ourselves. Throughout the years, we have had the pleasure to organise speeches with relevant players in different fields (Davide Serra, Enrico Mentana, Diego della Valle, Guido Maria Brera, Maurizio Marinella, and many others), to set corporate tours, tutoring sessions about the toughest subjects, creating a peer-to-peer service named #CrashLab, which will make your exams a less frightening experience. But of course we won't put fun aside: sold out parties at Parco Ravizza, known as the #B.lab2ThePark, a skiing holiday named #Skilab, and so much more! It is a revolutionary experience: at first, it's completely ok to feel disoriented in such a vast and competitive campus, full of risky challenges, but it's in that moment that you will have to dedicate yourself to the demanding tasks that you will have to face during your stay.

B.lab is an amazing stepping stone: it represents the proof that you can manage to get past any difficulty, although being shy and anxious. How? With the strength of a huge group of friends, that will lead you to think that believing in yourself and being enough brave is not such a big deal. Are you still hesitant? The proof of the pudding is in the eating!

See you at our first meeting of the year! 4

o Always remember to register to exams (you can do it through the You@B agenda and the Bocconi app) o Use all the materials available online (on Blackboard) o Go to office hours, trust your professors o The necessary number of credit points to pass to the second year is 24 o Try all the first partials, you have nothing to lose o Pay attention to the courses divided in modules: to pass the course you need to pass both the modules o Attendance really makes a difference o Do all the exercises in the exercise books (twice is better) o The first year is essential: the most important exams of your undergraduate career will be taken during the first year of University. Our advice: do your best since the beginning

➢

WHAT ARE PARTIALS:

➢

WHAT ARE MODULES:

Our University offers students the possibility to take partial exams for almost each subject;

Some courses are divided into modules:

They are based on half of the program of a Course;

A module usually covers the first and second semester of the first year: the most common examples are the Economics module and the Mathematics module;

If you have taken the first partial and your grade has been registered, in order to retake the exam (general mode) it is enough not to register for or not to show up to the second partial; The first partial is available on one date only, while for the second partial the possibility to choose between 2 dates has been introduced this year; REMEMBER: partials are important since they can help you better organize your study without accumulating an incredible number of subjects all to be prepared as a general exam.

In the same module, its parts can have different weights when calculating the weighted average. This way, you know which part of the module is more important to pass with a higher grade.; Modules’ grades are used to compute only your final degree grade

10 TIPS TO HANDLE YOUR YOU@B AGENDA 1. PUNTO BLU

Extremely helpful tool which gives you the possibility to • Check what income bracket you are assigned to (administrative area  financial situation-INCOME BRACKET). • Check Fees and contributions payment situation. It provides you with all the information about payment deadline and procedure (administrative area  financial situation-PAYMENTS). • Check your career path, i.e. keep track of the courses you have attended, the exams you have taken, the exams you registered for, and the exams you can sign up for1 (study plan, career and/or exams). • Submit your future request to take part to the exchange program. 2. WEBMAIL

Bocconi university provides you with your own student email address (ex. name.surname@studbocconi.it/IDnumber@studbocconi.it). We suggest either to synchronize it with your mobile phone or to check it every two/three days. It is super useful to get information both about events and conferences held in the university and about internship opportunities. Here is the link to synchronize it with your mobile device: https://www.unibocconi.it/webmail/zimbrahelp/ZimbraMobile_StudBocconi. pdf

3. EVENTS AND INTERNSHIPS

If you missed any valuable information about internships and events you don’t have to worry! • Both the ‘events calendar’ (CAREER SERVICE  events calendar) and the EVENTs tools are there to help you keep track of what the associations have to offer you every day. • The CAMPUS LIFE  “students’ associations” tool can be used to get the complete list of associations present in Bocconi and check out their website and/or social-network pages. We suggest using the dedicated tool ‘EXAMS DATE  Registration exam session’ to perform the last operation mentioned 1

9

• The JOBGATE tool will provide you with a constantly updated list of all the internships available, the information about each opportunity and the application process. You will also have the possibility to save your favourite ones on ‘my dashboard’. • Career service news will provide you with a list of all the events connected to the world of work. 4. BLACKBOARD

Blackboard is the e-learning platform where you can find the list of the curricular courses you are currently attending. By clicking on the course name you’ll be able to get all the necessary information about the course itself, read the professor’s announcement and download the materials you may need to study the subject. 5. FACULTY OFFICE HOURS

If the lectures and the materials on blackboard are not enough to answer all your questions and satisfy all your doubt you can check your professor’s office hours (FACULTY OFFICE HOURS  check professor office hours) and register2 in order to get an appointment. 6. YOUR DIARY

Once the academic year has started, you’ll be able to find in the ‘my diary’ box the list of your weekly lectures, exams and events. • The calendar of the lectures can be found also in the App thus allowing you to check it directly from your smartphones. • You can set the events you want your You@b to display in your diary by clicking the yellow label ‘set events in the diary’ (TO DO LIST  set events in the diary) and choose among the ones offered. 7. ECDL

Bocconi asks you the ECDL certificate to let you sit for computer science exam, therefore it provides you with the possibility to ‘buy’ the ECDL products, needed to get the certification, and register for the seven exams directly from your agenda (ECDL- EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE  buy ecdl products/register for ecdl advanced or epmq exams)3.

2

Registration is not always needed, it may be enough to show up at the time provided in the room indicated Your professor will inform you about what ECDL certification you are required to have. If you have it you need to provide the university with it 3

10

8. HELP AND CONTACT

You have any questions or doubts and can’t find an answer? HELP &CONTACT is what you need. The tool asks you to select the area of interest of your question and some keywords, the research will provide you with a list of the most frequent questions (and corresponding answers) related to your area of interest. If you can’t find a satisfactory solution to your problem you can contact the university by clicking on the dedicated icon. 9. LAST BUT NOT LEAST…

Once ‘You@b’ is the first suggested word and ‘YouTube’ is the second one in your google search bar you can be sure you are becoming a true Bocconi student (LOL)

11

REPRESENTATION At Bocconi University students have the possibility to

elect their

representatives. There are two representative levels: the class and course representatives, on one side, and the collegial ones, on the other. Class and course Representatives are elected each year in September and have the task to communicate with Professors, solve the class and course’s problems, attend the committees. Electoral procedures are explained in your agenda. You must be aware that, if you get elected as Class and Course representative, you’ll have to solve students’ problems in any part of the year, especially in the exams’ periods: it’s a very important role, so decide to apply only if you’re sure you’ll be able to fulfil all the task needed. Collegial Representatives are elected every two years, in spring, and they contribute to take decision that appertain to the whole students’ body. You’ll know them for sure in these years! Students’ representatives do not have any advantage/disadvantage with respect to the other students and they are not paid.

HONOR CODE Our University considers loyalty, honesty, responsible behaviour and responsible actions something fundamental for one’s education and professional life. Being an integral part of the Bocconi microcosm means sharing its values: independence, ethics, transparency, freedom of expression, fairness, diversity, social responsibility, solidarity, attention to merit and to the development of individual skills, professionalism and hard work. The Honor Code, which is the code of conduct for teachers and students, was written with these ideals. This code, which we all sign through our you@b agenda at the beginning of our first year, has to be re-signed during each written exam. It describes the rules of conduct and the sanctioning procedures that may be applied in the event of an infringement. Once a teacher has noticed any infringement of the Honor Code, the student who committed it is summoned to a meeting through a message in his you@b agenda. Then, during this meeting, the Disciplinary Commission is charged with verifying the violations and initiating the sanctioning procedure in case of guilt. This Commission is made up of the Dean of Graduate, Undergraduate and Law schools, the Head of the Academic Affairs Division, the director of the ISU Bocconi and two of the five students representatives elected to the Faculty Council. The Commission meets on a monthly basis and analyses all the cases of the last month. During the meeting, the students will have the opportunity to defend themselves and answer the charges. Once the consultation stage has been completed and the student's explanation has been heard, the Commission makes a decision and sends to the Academic Council a proposal for the closure of the case or for a disciplinary action. Then, the Academic Council can make it effective.

NOTE!:

Any penalty, except simple warnings, implies the revocation of any

scholarship or reduced rate housing. #PersonalAdvice: Trying to copy during exam, using a smartphone/note for cheating or entering an attendance code while you are not in class can cause a really serious punishment: you could be suspended for a period of six months! I hope you’ll never have to deal with the Commission!

EXCHANGE The exchange program offered by Bocconi University is the one that will allow you to spend abroad one semester either of the third year of your bachelor degree course or of the second year of your master degree course. Here are some general advices meant to give you an idea of how it works. We hope it will prove to be useful once the time to get deeper and more detailed information about such experience arrives! 1) Who and when: the exchange program is available for third year bachelor students and second year master students. The students interested are required to apply for the program during the first semester of the year preceding the one of interest, i.e. 2nd year for bachelor students and 1st year for master students, within the date which is set every year and rigorously communicated to all students by the university. 2) Requirements4: • Minimum academic requirements: people regularly enrolled in the second year of bachelor degree course must have 60% of first year credits and a minimum GPA of 22/30 in order to apply for the program. People regularly enrolled in the first year of master degree course must have 16 credits of the 1st semester of the first year and a minimum GPA of 24/30. • Minimum language requirements: B2 English level is required for bachelor students. B2 English level with a minimum of 25/30 is required for master students. For all the other languages students must have achieved level B1. • Additional requirements: in addition to these requirements many universities may ask students for other requirements such as a specific language, a specific language certificate, a higher minimum GPA.

3) How to apply: students who wish to apply for the program need to fill in the application form with all the information and certificates required within the deadline set by the university. It is possible to enrol using the “Punto blu” service which can be found in the you@b personal agenda (punto blu  campus aboard). It is important to print a receipt of the application as proof of the completed form. 4) Destinations: Bocconi has partnerships with almost 250 foreign universities which offer several spots either for fall or spring or both terms. The student has the possibility to express up to 6 preferences. Being the host universities spread among 50 different countries you may have the chance to spend an entire semester in a place you have ever wanted to visit! The list of spots offered by each university and additional requirements (if there are ones) is updated and uploaded every year by the university5. 5) Selection: students who applied for the program are ranked according to their weighted average and expressed preferences. The ones selected will receive an email and will have to reply within 3 days declaring whether they accept to take part to the program or withdraw. 6) Withdrawal: the student selected can withdraw through the “punto blu” service within the deadline indicated. In case of withdrawal the student will be excluded from the program, i.e. he/she will not be assigned to another destination, will not be able both to submit any other application to the same program during the academic career underway and to take part to the Free Mover program for the academic year underway.6 7) Waiting list: people who are not selected in the first round are assigned to the waiting lists and will have the possibility to take part to the program upon withdrawal of one or more of the previously selected students depending on their ranking in the list. 8) Scholarships: students selected can ask for scholarships in order to reduce accommodation and other costs 7 . Selected people may get a mobility 5

Bocconi University offers one of the best selections of books and newspapers, both in physical and digital format, in order to enhance your knowledge of topics that you are interested in, or to discover new ones. The library also provides you with a set of databases, useful in order to complete some of the assignments that you will receive.

Gym: need a break from your study session, and feel like doing some sport? Then the Bocconi Sport Team gym situated at the Bocconi residence is exactly what you need! But university life is not only about taking classes, sitting exams, and doing assignments, so it would be a pity not to exploit every chance that you have! Bocconi University can boast a large number of associations, societies that were founded by students in order to cultivate a common interest. Many are the fields in which associations operate, and among them: finance, business consulting, students’ unions, music, art, food, fashion, sport... Everyone has the opportunity either to join an existing society or to create a new one through the specific procedure available on the Bocconi website, so don’t hold on, and become part of a community that shares your passions! Associations can organize events throughout the course of the year, and invite guests that are relevant to the topic chosen for the occasion. Particularly, two events are worth mentioning: #B.labToThePark, which is a huge opportunity to make new friends during a whole day spent at Parco Ravizza, to the sound of music and accompanied by free food and beer, and #Skilab, a three-days 19

long journey in which B.lab leads you to discover new ski resorts with the most insane company you will ever find. Moving on to some of the events that are organized by the University as an institution, you can’t miss the Welcome Week, which is a 15-days long period that will allow you to discover not only the campus, but also the different associations through games, sporting events, and many other things. And if you’re more of a luxurious person, grab your suit or your dress, and get ready for the Bocconi Gala, an event held in December in which the lucky ones who were able to get a ticket can enjoy a wonderful night, simply beyond words.

Aside from the famous Duomo Cathedral, Milan offers a unique selection of museums and places to go to if you feel about getting to know the culture of your new home. Impressive art collections can be found in the Pinacoteca di Brera, while if your interests revolve mostly around the twentieth century you could visit the Museo del ‘900; if you love the sights of superb Churches and Cathedrals then you may want to visit Sant’Ambrogio’s Cathedral, or Santa Maria delle Grazie, in which you will be able to find the breathtaking “The last Supper” by Leonardo Da Vinci. Overall, if you want to discover more about Italian culture and art, Milan will surely give you the chance to do it.

NIGHTLIFE IN MILAN Are you a party animal? Then Milan is the place where you need to be! Every night, every week, you can try new music, new vibes, new rhythms. First of all, Milan is the home of Aperitivo, which you can experience from 7pm until about 10pm. It basically consists in a good cocktail and a large buffet, usually available for 10€. The best areas for Aperitivo are Brera and Corso Como. If you would like to have an Aperitivo close to our campus, there’s a list of the most interesting places to go: Loop (Via Sarfatti 1) A perfect place to have a good coffee in the company, but also great for food and drink, spacious and equipped with tables also outside, is one of the major university’s meeting point. Exotic (Viale Bligny 21) It is one of the most spacious place near the University, so it’s perfect for aperitifs in groups, they offer a very large buffet that ranges from first to desserts. Dahlia Lab (Via Bocconi 4) Despite the place is recently opened it’ is one of the most appreciated by the Bocconi students, with a warm and familiar atmosphere, there is the possibility during the day to eat and take a break between one lesson and the other, in the evening it offers great drinks and buffets. Maravea (Viale Bligny 15) Also this bar’s recently opened: it has a very quiet atmosphere, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, is perfect for a chat and eating great food with friends. Venti136 (Via Rontgen 2) This is one of the most popular places in the university. Perfect for lunch breaks with a rich offer and more than acceptable prices, a delicious aperitif. If you prefer luxurious environments, then go to Ceresio 7, from which you can take nice pictures with Milan skyline.

21

Let’s now turn to clubs. Old Fashion (Parco Sempione) Specialized in pop music, it is the place where a lot of Bocconi students spend their nights off exam period. The best nights to spend at Old are Wednesday (university students party) and Saturday. Just Cavalli (Parco Sempione) A smarter club that often hosts worldwide famous DJs. Other good solutions for Friday and Saturday night are The Club and Hollywood. On Monday evening at the Dahila Lab there is karaoke accompanied by the mythical Ale Moretti. On Tuesday evening, however, we usually go at Gattopardo, that it’s one of the most appreciated by the Bocconi students. On the other hand, for a thrilling Thursday evening a nice club to visit is either Byblos, for JustWine (15€ open wine and buffet from 8pm until 1 am) or Volt, a very popular club for Uptown music.

If you are that kind of person who prefers a chill night, just for a beer with friends, then Navigli is your area. Full of nice bars, for sure the best beer place is Le Fontanelle, a rustic tavern where you can enjoy different pint shapes (cannon, cracken etc.) and a lot of beer types, while talking with your friends and playing table games.

USEFUL TIPS Some brief tips on how to survive Bocconi… 1 – Attendance I am and I will always be a laggard, so I know that being in time to a lecture is not easy at all: clubs, studying until 3 A.M., sleeping, other night “commitments” … being in class at 8:45 is not as easy as you can think. Often, you’ll leave your bed as happy as a zombie from “The Walking Dead” could be, but I’ll suggest following as much as you can: it helps to better understand what you’re studying and it is a wonderful opportunity to make friends (or even more, who can tell?) P.S. For many courses the attendance is recorded with a code to insert in the app, DO NOT try to cheat! 2 – Study Please, do not study everything at the last minute: it is not healthy and it is not good for your personal relationships. One fundamental thing is to find your study

rhythm: there is no perfect formula, some study until late, some others wake up at six in the morning, some do it alone and some with others (I’m always referring to the study), but it is essential to find your own method! Bocconi allows you to go to the library (with some bookable rooms), the bunker, lots of places in Velodromo and at Lions’ building (some free rooms are indicated on the website) … Use them! 3 – Exams, office hours and paper show

Always subscribe for an exam even though you’re not prepared. Going through the study, you could have some doubts, so use the professor, assistant and tutors’ office hours! Then, after every exam, there is the paper show: I always recommend going seeing your exam, but avoid Greek tragedies scenes for having one point added and of course be polite! P.S.: If you subscribe for an exam using the app you should check that everything is ok with your computer. Sometimes the subscription is not registered properly! 4 – App and thereabouts There are so many phone apps that you absolutely need in Milan: The one to order your food, the one for the car-sharing, the one for the public transport… but for a 26

Bocconi student the university app is essential: you’ll find the courses calendar, all the necessary info and the messages that you’ll receive during the year… download it and use it (on the website there are also the tutorials). 5 – Important deadlines: fees and the famous 24 credits Let’s start with the fees, on the “Punto Blu” you’ll find the MAV and the deadlines: for each extra day after the expiration date there are some penalties to pay so be careful! Another important deadline is the 24 credits one: each exam has a certain number of credits, to pass the first year you must reach the 24 credits by July (September does not count). You can easily reach this result, so don’t panic, but be careful. 6 – Badge

Your badge is like the password for the Gryffindor common room: you need it to go in the bunker and in the library, to print with MyPrint and it is NECESSARY bringing it to the exams! Try to not lose it, but don’t worry, you can ask for a new one, while for the photo… there’s nothing you can do about it. 7 – Social-izing A very little “official” advice: often check your agenda and your webmail. On you@b you’ll find timetables and the rooms in which you’ll follow lectures and other events; give a look when you can. Another thing, you can be either as social as Kim Kardashian, or a person which hates Facebook more than your ex-boyfriend/girlfriend. Still, social networks are useful

to orient yourself: on Facebook, you can find specific groups for each class and a series of generic groups to share notes, booklets, slides and ask questions. I’m not saying that you shall become the new Gianni Morandi or Chiara Ferragni (even though she studied in Bocconi), but do not forget to check the social networks, they can help. 8 – Blackboard Name aside (original, isn’t it?) Bboard will become a fixed part of your life in Bocconi. You’ll find slides, exercises, documents and whatever you need to do your

exams, as well as the messages of your professors. 9 – Platform 9 without ¾ Okay, there isn’t the subway near to the university, but we are still in a good position: there is the 9, going from Porta Genova to Centrale, the 15, which goes from Rozzano 27

(a place very similar to Narnia) to the Duomo, and really close you can find the yellow subway in Missori or in Porta Romana. The most famous autobus in Milan, 90 and 91, follows the ring road (you’ll get used to call it “Circonvallazione”) and is always active, 24 hours on 24. 10 – Enjoy It could sound stupid, silly, more predictable than the fog in Milan, but your years in Bocconi, your university life, will be unique, beautiful, complicate, and amazing. Sometimes take two seconds to enjoy the view, and good luck for everything, especially for the applied math exam!
