La reordenación y mejora urbana en torno a la nueva estación subterránea en Bilbao supondrá una nueva mejora de la villa que quien viaje percibirá.

El segundo motivo es la puesta en valor y apertura a las visitas de las minas y grutas bajo Miribilla. Un fascinante mundo de espacios y colores herencia del pasado industrial que se esconde bajo los edificios de Bilbao. Las vísceras de la ciudad se transformarán en un gran atractivo. El hierro fue el gran recurso de la ciudad durante siglos, ya lo citaba Shakespeare. Ahora lo será el hueco que dejó el hierro. Es como si Chillida y Oteiza ya lo supieran y lo hubieran profetizado: lo importante es el espacio vacío. La entraña.

Un nuevo conjunto de sendas sobre madera permite contemplar la ciudad desde Artxanda

El ayuntamiento de Bilbao acaba de generar un aliciente más para dedicar una mañana a pasear por Artxanda. Se suma a la zona arbolada, el tradicional Mirador, la gran pista arbolada y la oferta de tabernas y restaurantes.

El macizo calizo del Gorbeia levanta la espalda de Bizkaia hasta la llanura alavesa. Es la montaña del territorio. La que cualquier persona que acceda por carretera desde la península ha de atravesar. Hoy en día, lo más habitual resulta utilizar la autopista. El punto de peaje indicado como Altube se encuentra en la ladera alavesa del Gorbeia. Y, por estas fechas, no resultará extraño que la cumbre aparezca encanecida por la nieve y el hielo. Desde ese punto, resta bajar suavemente hasta el Cantábrico

Subamos a la colina en funicular, El Funi, como es popularmente conocido, tomándolo en la plaza del mismo nombre, a unos metros del Zubizuri que cruza la ría. Desde el Mirador contemplaremos, hacia el sur, la ciudad y las cresterías que la rodean. Hacia el noreste, el aeropuerto y valle del Txorierri. Y, hacia el noroeste, el puerto de Santurtzi y el mar.

Si tomamos dirección oeste por el camino que queda a un lado de las antenas bajaremos hasta la carretera Enekuri-Santo Domingo. Cuenta con un trazado para peatones bien protegido y con vistas. Sigámoslo, siempre hacia el oeste, hasta encontrar a nuestra izquierda un sendero asfaltado marcado como Camino de Berriz, que se encuentra en un cruce. Al tomarlo pasaremos al lado del viejo molino de viento del siglo XVIII y por la loma en la que se encuentran otro conjunto de antenas. Ocupan estas el mismo lugar del mástil para señales con banderas marítimas con las que la ciudad tenía conocimiento de los barcos que subían por la ría rumbo al viejo puerto de El Arenal. En ese punto comienza una pasarela de voladizo que forma un cinturón en ziz-zag en la falda de la colina. Las vistas sobre la isla de Zorrozaurre y el antiguo pulmón industrial permiten pasear entendiendo el desarrollo de todo un territorio.

La pasarela tiene una longitud de kilómetro y medio, un ancho mínimo libre de obstáculos de dos metros y una pendiente máxima del 8%. Es muy agradable para caminar. Está dotada con dos miradores, sustentada sobre pilares aislados y cuenta con alumbrado y una fuente.

En su punto más bajo conecta, cruzando Enekuri, con otra pasarela de características idénticas que bordea el Monte Cabras y ofrece vistas sobre Erandio. Si el paseo ha sido suficiente, basta con descender por la vía peatonal de Enekuri hasta Ibarrekolanda y tomar allí el Metro o un autobús urbano para regresar al centro.

Por cierto, desde lo alto, junto al Mirador de Artxanda, muy cerca de la estación superior del Funi, sale otra pasarela que desciende hacia Sondika y muestra parte del Cinturón de Hierro, el sistema defensivo de trincheras y búnkeres del que se dotó Bilbao durante la guerra de 1936-1939.

On taking it, we pass by the old 18th century windmill and the hill on which there is another set of antennae. These occupy the same place as the signal mast with maritime flags with which the city was aware of the ships that sailed up the estuary towards the old port of El Arenal. At this point begins a cantilevered walkway that forms a ziz-zag belt around the side of the hill. The views over the island of Zorrozaurre and the old industrial heartland allow the visitor to walk and understand the development of a whole territory.

The walkway is one and a half kilometres long, has a clear width of at least two metres and a maximum gradient of 8%. It is very pleasant to walk along. It has two viewpoints, is supported by isolated pillars and has lighting and a fountain.

At its lowest point it connects, crossing Enekuri, with another walkway of the same characteristics that

skirts Monte Cabras and offers views over Erandio. If you have had enough of the walk, you can simply go down the Enekuri pedestrian walkway to Ibarrekolanda and take the Metro or a city bus to return to the centre.

On another note, there is another walkway that descends to Sondika and shows part of Bilbao’s Iron Belt, the defensive system of trenches and bunkers that Bilbao was equipped with during the war of 1936-1939.

La Diputación Foral de Bizkaia ha realizado durante el otoño y parte del invierno obras por valor de un millón de euros para mejorar los accesos a uno de los puntos icónicos del litoral de Bizkaia: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. El lugar que se convirtió en La Roca del Dragón de la serie Juego de Tronos, que ha tenido cancelados los accesos durante los últimos meses, vuelve a ser visitable. Han sido rehabilitados varios tramos de la escalinata de acceso al islote teniendo en cuenta aspectos estéticos de integración en el entorno y empleo de materiales locales para

conservar la imagen del conjunto del enclave. En concreto, han sido eliminados socavones detectados en la zona inferior de los muros, se ha recolocado mampostería, reparado una grieta y recrecido el muro en diferentes puntos para que alcance la altura mínima considerada adecuada para garantizar la seguridad de las personas.

El muelle del recoleto puerto de mundaka tiene memoría de corsarios y vistas a una de las mejores olas izquierdas del planeta. Las calles empedradas, los parques y las playas, tanto la de la propia bahía como las cercanas de Laga y Laida, invitan a quedarse aunque no se sea amante del surf. Pero nuestro destino es alejarnos de la espuma del mar para acercarnos a la montaña. Así que salimos a la carretera y giramos hacia nuestra izquierda, dirección Gernika. Pasamos por Portuondo y Busturia antes de llegar a la rotonda que nos evitará entrar en Gernika y seguiremos la indicación hacia Lekeitio. Pasaremos por Kortezubi, donde se encuentran el Bosque pintado de Oma y la Cueva de Santimamiñe y sus pinturas rupestres. Pero dejaremos la visita para otro día. Pocos kilómetros más adelante, a mano izquierda, veremos

la indicación del bird center . Merece la pena dedicar tiempo a la observación de las aves de la marisma, incluso pasear entre el carrizo, el centro le ofrece todo tipo de recursos y guías.

De regreso a la ruta, continuamos hacia Lekeitio, pasando junto a las canteras de Ereño y, en el cruce de Solarte, en lugar de descender hacia Lekeitio, tomamos la dirección Okamika entre prados, colinas y bosques. Llegaremos a aulesti , cuna de pelotaris, con su trazado medieval y palacios severos. Sentido a Markina pasaremos a la sombra de la ermita de Santa Eufemia, referente de la zona desde su altozano rocoso. Pasamos por la villa de Markina-Xemein, por la que pasearemos en otra ocasión, enfilamos el alto de

Trabakua hacia Durango, en cuyo casco urbano tampoco entraremos, encarar la nacional hacia Vitoria-Gasteiz. Veremos la carretera estrecharse en Izurza y, pronto, la indicación para mañaria . Se trata de un núcleo rural entre canteras de caliza y bajo las moles del Mugarra y el Untzillaitz, que dominan las vistas. Es el momento de tomar un refrigerio escuchando el coro de balidos y cencerros.

Resta retornar a la carretera y ascender, con precaución, por la retorcida carretera que conduce a urkiola . El paisaje le sorprenderá en cada curva. La subida es corta y aguarda una zona de aparcamiento, un centro de interpretación, el santuario y sendas entre el hayedo que esconden neveros, miradores y las vistas del Anboto. Se puede sentir un viento antiguo y misterioso. No se imponga tiempos.

Actualmente Lekeitio constituye uno de los grandes atractivos de la costa de Bizkaia. Maria Theresa, lived in Lekeitio between 1922 and 1931. They lived in the palace facing the sea, which is now a hotel.

“Every city has its own character, but Bilbao is special to me”

Belén Frau (Bilbao, 1974) is an economist who lives in Copenhagen. But she returns four times a year to the city where she was born. “In summer and at Christmas and whenever I have a spare moment. My whole family is there. And my parents, who are still around, are elderly and they’re great”, she reveals.

Frau is part of the management team of the Swedish furniture and decoration multinational. She is a global Bilbao native. “When I come back, I have my own little tour. Visiting the family always comes first. Then, I meet up with my friends. And afterwards, I go for a steak with my colleagues from Deloitte. I try to go to San Mamés to watch an Athletic match, my children are huge supporters. The little one goes to school every day in Copenhagen, wearing an Athletic hat and backpack. I go for gildas in Indautxu, which is my neighbourhood, or to buy ham to bring back home. I have a great bond with Plentzia and we always go to the beach for a walk, even if it’s winter. Or to Barrika”.

I have lived in Madrid, Milan and Peoria (Illinois, USA). And he assures that “each city has its own thing: Copenhagen is a

fantastic city, very comfortable; everything works well with super quality public services; in Milan you are just a stone’s throw from the mountains, the sea, and it is full of artistic and gastronomic richness”.

But Bilbao is something else. “ It is special to me, I feel my colours. Bilbao has given me a lot. I studied my degree and began my professional career there. I try to give all that back despite my time limitations”, she stresses.

The economist suggests that Bilbao should take a step beyond the Guggenheim effect. “We must open up more to the world. We are humble and we don’t show off, we don’t make our goodness known. In addition, we need to reinforce English. When people come from far away, you need to improve your English. I also believe that we need to make business hours more flexible to guarantee tourists’ leisure time”, she proposes.

“Very few cities have the beach, the mountains and a gastronomic offer like ours; it has a lot to give”, she concludes.

La econonomista Belén Frau (Bilbao, 1974) vive en Copenhague. Pero regresa a la ciudad que le vió nacer cuatro veces al año. “En verano y en Navidad y cuando tengo un hueco. Toda mi familia está allí. Y mis padres, que viven, son mayores y están estupendos”, revela.

Frau forma parte del equipo directivo de la multinacional sueca del mueble y la decoración. Es una bilbaína global. “Cuando regreso, tengo mi pequeño recorrido. Visitar la familia es siempre lo primero. Luego, quedo con mis amigas de toda la vida. Y también me voy comer una chuleta con los compañeros de Deloitte. Trato de acudir a San Mamés a ver un partido del Athletic, mis hijos son súper forofos. El pequeño va en Copenhague, todos los días al colegio con gorro y mochila del Athletic. Voy a tomar unas gildas por Indautxu, que es mi barrio, o a comprar jamón para traerlo aquí. Tengo un gran vínculo con Plentzia y siempre vamos a la playa a dar un paseo, aunque sea invierno. O a Barrika”.

Ha vivido en Madrid, en Milán y en Peoria (Illinois, Estados Unidos). Y asegura que “cada ciudad tiene lo suyo: Copenhague es una ciudad fantástica, muy cómoda; todo funciona bien con unos servicios públicos de súper calidad; en Milán estás a un salto de la montaña, del mar, y está llena de riqueza artística y gastronómica”.

Pero Bilbao es otra cosa. “Para mí es especial, siento los colores. Bilbao me ha dado mucho. He estudiado la carrera y empezó mi recorrido profesional allí. Intento devolver todo eso a pesar mis limitaciones de tiempo”, recalca.

Sugiere la economista que Bilbao debe dar un paso más allá del efecto Guggenheim. “Hay que abrirse más al mundo. Somos humildes y no contamos, no damos a conocer

nuestras bondades. Además, debemos reforzar el inglés. Cuando vienen personas de lejos, necesitan el refuerzo del inglés. Creo también es importante que la flexibilización de los horarios comerciales para garantizar el ocio de los turistas”, propone.

“Pocas ciudades gozan de la playa, la montaña y de una oferta gastronómica como la nuestra; Bilbao tiene mucho que ofrecer”, concluye.

La anchoa del Golfo de Bizkaia (Engraulis encrarischolus) constituye uno de los manjares de la cocina de Bizkaia y de todo el litoral cantábrico. La tradición culinaria propone variados modos de preparación: frituras, enteras, abiertas, marinadas en vinagre y sal, rebozadas… Siempre deliciosas.

Se trata de un pez de no más de un palmo de largo que forma enormes cardúmenes. La flota artesanal de bajura captura a su paso por el litoral de Bizkaia durante una temporada - la costera- que comienza en marzo o abril y se prolonga durante unos pocos meses.

En salazón y conservadas en aceite de oliva constituyen un verdadero lujo. Quizá con unos filamentos de guindilla roja seca. Y un txakoli y un buen pan artesano para acompañar.

Las primeras crónicas de la técnica de salar la anchoa se remontan hasta los fenicios. Griegos y romanos expandieron el arte de mimar la anchoa. En Bizkaia, las guardianas de sus secretos han sido las mujeres de los puertos. En bidones, alternan varias capas de anchoas y sal. Maduran a lo largo de ocho meses. Y durante las primeras semanas del año siguiente, se limpian y se envasan con aceite de oliva en latas o frascos de vidrio. El pez de carne blanca es ahora una delicada lámina marrón.

La calidad del pescado y el cuidado en su selección y manipulación determina el resultado final. Aunque siempre es un verdadero lujo.

La conservera de Juan Carlos Royo, una empresa pequeña y tradicional, guarda y mantiene todos los cánones que marca la costumbre. Se ubica en Bermeo, uno de los puertos de referencia.

Anchovies from the Bay of Biscay (Engraulis encrarischolus) are one of the delicacies of the cuisine of Bizkaia and the whole of the Cantabrian coast.

Culinary tradition offers a variety of ways of preparing them: fried, whole, open, marinated in vinegar and salt, in batter... They are always delicious.

This fish is no more than an inch long and forms enormous shoals. The small-scale inshore fleet catches them as they pass along the coast of Bizkaia during a season - the coastal season - which begins in March or April and lasts for a few months.

When salted and preserved in olive oil, they are a real luxury. Perhaps with a few strands of dried red chilli pepper. And a glass of txakoli and some good artisan bread served with it.

The first records of the technique of salting anchovies date back to the Phoenicians, and the Greeks and Romans expanded the art of pampering anchovies. In Bizkaia, the guardians of its secrets have been the local women of the harbours. The anchovies mature over a period of eight

months. And during the first weeks of the following year, they are cleaned and packed with olive oil in tins or glass jars. The white-fleshed fish is now a delicate brown foil.

The quality of the fish and the care taken in its selection and handling determines the final result. But it is always a true luxury.

Juan Carlos Royo’s canning factory, a small and traditional company, keeps and maintains all the canons of tradition. It is located in Bermeo, which is one of the most important ports.

Royo anchovies can be found in the main delicatessen shops in Bilbao, as well as in the Bermeo cannery itself.

A partir del 13 de junio y hasta el 23 Bilbao Bizkaia Harro promueve un programa lleno de actuaciones musicales, talleres, cine y actividades de todo tipo para celebrar el Día del Orgullo LGBTI+. Todo encaminado a festejar y reivindicar la diversidad de la ciudad y el territorio.

Del 13 al 16 el programa se realizará en distintos municipios de Bizkaia, caso de Santurtzi, por citar uno. Entre los días 23 y 23 será el turno de Bilbao, donde habrá conciertos en El Arenal, cine al aire libre en la salida del Metro de San Nicolás, carrera de tacones en la calle Santa María o zumba en la Gran Vía, además del desfile por esta céntrica arteria de la ciudad, entre otras actividades.

From 13th June until 23rd June, Bilbao Bizkaia Harro is promoting a programme full of musical performances, workshops, films and activities of all kinds to celebrate LGBTI+ Pride Day. All aimed at celebrating and vindicating the diversity of the city and the territory.

From the 13th to the 16th the programme will be held in different municipalities in Bizkaia, such as Santurtzi, to name but one. Between the 20th and 23rd it will be time for Bilbao, with concerts in El Arenal, an open-air cinema at the San Nicolás Metro exit, a heel race in Santa María Street and zumba in Gran Vía, as well as a parade along this main artery of the city, among other activities.

Several cultural agents such as museums, the terrace of the Gran Hotel Domine or BBK Kuna, for instance, will join in the celebration of diversity and freedom.

El vermut, ese vino añejo especiado y aromatizado que es, a la vez, dulce y amargo, supone un rito de inicio del fin de semana o los días de asueto. En Bilbao, y también en el resto del territorio, existen muchos bares y restaurantes con especialistas en su puesta a punto.

A partir de las 12:00 del mediodía, el personal pide un ‘marianito’, es decir un vermut, sea blanco o rojo, en vaso pequeño, casi siempre con hielo y a menudo una aceituna. El ‘marianito’ es el vermut de quienes pasean de bar en bar conversando. El txikiteo famoso.

El vermut, a menudo servido en vaso whisky y en cantidad más generosa, pide la mesa de una terraza y una larga conversación, unas gildas y calma. El vermut es un aperitivo para todos los gustos, extendido y redundante.

Es preciso elegir los lugares para pedir un ‘vermut preparado’, enfriado en vaso mezclador, retocado con gin, perfumado con su piel de naranja, y servido en copita de martini. Otra alternativa es un dry martini, apropiado solo para gentes recias y con fuerza de voluntad.

En Bilbao, muy recomendables los de Gogoa, Jaime, Basaras, Gallo Negro, Morrocotuda o Monty; en Mungia, Txomin; en Balmaseda, Geo Cocktail. Pero en Durango, Gernika, Elorrio, Lekeitio, Plentzia y casi cualquier localidad de Bizkaia aparece el buen vermut.

‘Iron River’ propone ocho rutas por Bilbao y Bizkaia que conectan Vías Verdes y 41 atractivos del patrimonio industrial fundamentales para entender la historia del territorio

Bizkaia es hoy un territorio de ciudades amables, ríos azules y cielos abiertos. Pero durante siglos fue puerto de mercaderes. Y, siempre, la tierra del hierro. Horada, no hace tanto, por inmensas minas, calentada por fundiciones, alumbrada por hornos de incineración, pisada de decenas de miles de trabajadores que manejaban picos y vagones, fraguas, tochos al rojo vivo, enormes tolvas de productos químicos, pistones de vapor, jeringas de lubricante y gabarras graneleras. Todo era óxido, humo y buzos de azul mahón endurecidos bajo txapelas y cascos.

‘Iron River’ recupera esa memoria. Su catálogo ofrece una experiencia única para explorar la riqueza histórica e industrial de Bizkaia de una manera diferente. Abarca variedad de destinos y puntos de interés. Desde los antiguos Astilleros de Bilbao, Barakaldo y Sestao y sus siderurgias, Portugalete y el Puente de Bizkaia, las villas de la burguesía en Getxo o Pozalagua, Güeñes y el Valle de Karrantza, entre otros.

‘Iron River’ proposes eight routes through Bilbao and Bizkaia, linking greenways and 41 industrial heritage sites that are fundamental to understanding the history of the area

Today, Bizkaia is a land of friendly towns, blue rivers and open skies. But for centuries it was a trading port. And always the land of iron. Not so long ago, it was bored by vast mines, heated by smelters, fired by furnaces, trampled by tens of thousands of workers who handled picks and wagons, forges, red-hot billets, giant chemical hoppers, steam pistons, grease guns and bulk barges. It was all rust, smoke and hardened mahogany overalls under txapelas and hard hats.

Iron River’ recovers this memory. Its catalogue offers a unique experience to explore the historical and industrial wealth of Bizkaia in a different way. It covers a wide range of destinations and points of interest. From the old Bilbao shipyards, Barakaldo and Sestao and their steelworks, Portugalete and the Bizkaia bridge, to the mansions of Getxo or Pozalagua, Güeñes and the Karrantza valley, among others.

Pero se trata de 180 segundos en los que cambia radicalmente el punto de vista de Bilbao.

Una vez en Artxanda aparecen la pista de patinaje, los arbolados, praderas, zonas deportivas, restaurantes. Y, sobre todo, las vistas. De repente, cualquiera puede entender perfectamente Bilbao y situarse en función de dónde quede su alojamiento.
