Además de los atractivos inherentes al Territorio, aquellos que permanecen y que forman parte de su identidad, Bilbao y Bizkaia se han convertido en sedes habituales de grandes eventos internacionales. El caso más evidente lo constituye el anual BBK Live, uno de los mejores festivales pop de Europa, que congrega a jovénes, y no tan jóvenes, procedentes de todo el mundo. Los eventos deportivos de primer nivel no se quedan atrás. En 2018 y 2019, el Puente de La Salve, con el espectacular perfil del Guggenheim como fondo, fue escenario de pruebas de los Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. Resultó impactante. También en 2018, el Estadio de San Mamés, la ciudad y toda Bizkaia, fueron anfitriones de los principales torneos de rugby europeo por clubes:la EPCR Challenge Cup y la Investec Champions Cup. Regresarán en 2026.
En 2023, la 110ª edición del Tour de Francia partió el 1 de julio desde Bilbao. La Vuelta Ciclista a España recorrerá Bizkaia el próximo 3 de septiembre. Es ya algo habitual.
En cuanto al fútbol, el césped de San Mamés fue cómplice de la final de la UEFA Champions League femenina que se disputó el 25 de mayo de 2024. Y el 21 de mayo de este 2025 es un protagonista más de la final de la UEFA League masculina. Lo será también del Mundial de Fútbol 2030. Como ya sucedió en 1982. Harían bien en regresar quienes estuvieron entonces. Verán otro fútbol, otro estadio y otra ciudad. Aunque tanto el balompie como San Mamés y Bilbao mantengan la misma esencia.

In addition to the territory’s own inherent assets —those that remain and form part of its identity—, Bilbao and Bizkaia have become regular venues for major international events. The most obvious case is the annual BBK Live, one of the best pop festivals in Europe, which brings together the younger and older generations from all over the world.
High-profile sporting events are not far behind. In 2018 and 2019, La Salve Bridge, with the spectacular Guggenheim skyline as a backdrop, hosted the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. It was breathtaking. Also in 2018, the San Mamés stadium, the city and the whole of Bizkaia hosted the most important European club rugby tournaments: the EPCR Challenge Cup and the Investec Champions Cup. They will be back here in 2026.
In 2023, the 110th edition of the Tour de France will set off from Bilbao on the first of july. The Vuelta Ciclista a España will pass through Bizkaia on the third of september. It has already become a regular event.
In regard to football, the San Mamés grass was an accomplice in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final on 25 May 2024, and will be also protagonist in the UEFA Men’s Champions League final on 21 May 2025. And on 21 May 2025, it will play a key role in the final of the UEFA Men’s League. It will also play a major role in the FIFA World Cup 2030. Just like in 1982. It would be good for those who were there back in 1982 to come back. A different football, a different stadium and a different city. Although football, San Mamés and Bilbao still do keep the same essence.

Lo primavera es una de las épocas más recomendables para acercarse a una montaña espectacular y cargada de ecos mitológicos
Se trata de una de las montañas preferidas por senderistas y amantes del trekking. Su macizo calizo se eleva hasta los 1.331 metros entre Bizkaia, Araba y Gipuzkoa como si de una gran bisagra que une los tres Territorios se tratara.
El conjunto forma parte del Parque Natural de Urkiola. Y, desde el magnífico entorno del santuario y su aparcamiento arbolado es desde donde arrancan los senderos más accesibles que conducen a Anboto. El parque ofrece paisajes espectaculares, con bosques de hayas, prados y formaciones rocosas.
Conviene tener en cuenta que la ascensión requiere una buena condición física y alguna experiencia en senderismo de montaña. Es importante llevar ropa y calzado adecuados, así como agua y comida e informarse bien de las condiciones meteorológicas antes.
Dependiendo del punto de la montaña al que se quiera llegar, la duración de una caminata de ida y regreso a Urkiola puede oscilar entre las 3 y las 5 horas. La experiencia de contacto con la naturaleza, la fauna, el paisaje resulta inolvidable.
LA DIOSA
Las grutas y cuevas que surgen en la caliza de Anboto constituyeron el hogar preferido de la Diosa Madre de la mitología precristiana, a la que el antropólogo vasco José Miguel de Barandiarán denominó ‘Mari’. El espíritu gobernaba la tierra, las cosechas y el clima, atravesaba el cielo con forma de hoz de fuego y descansaba en el interior de la montaña. Tanto en el Anboto como en otras. Pero sentía debilidad por esta. Era la casa de Mari, uno de cuyos nombres es La Dama de Anboto.
Aún hay quien la ve. O quien la escucha. Por un momento. En el cielo del crepúsculo. O asomando de una sima.

This is one of the most popular mountains for hikers and trekkers. Its limestone massif rises to 1,331 metres amidst Bizkaia, Araba and Gipuzkoa, as if it were a great hinge connecting the three territories.
The ensemble is part of the Urkiola Natural Park. The most accessible paths to Anboto start from the beautiful surroundings of the sanctuary and its forested car park. The park offers spectacular scenery, with beech forests, meadows and rock formations.
It is important to bear in mind that the climb requires a good level of fitness and experience in mountain trekking, as well as suitable clothing and footwear, water and food, and good information on weather conditions.
Depending on where you want to go, a hike to Urkiola and back can take between 3 and 5 hours. The experience of being in touch with nature, fauna and landscape is unforgettable.
THE GODESS
The caves and grottos carved into the limestone of Anboto were the favourite home of the mother goddess of pre-Christian mythology, whom the Basque anthropologist José Miguel de Barandiarán called ‘Mari’. The spirit who ruled the earth, the crops and the climate, crossed the sky in the form of a fiery sickle and rested inside the mountain. Both in the Anboto and in other mountains. But I had a weakness for this one. It was the house of ‘Anbotoko Mari’, one of the names of the goddess of Anboto.
There are still some people who see it. Or hear it. For a moment. In the twilight sky. Or peering out of a chasm.

Bizkaia permite pasar en media jornada de la brisa del mar a un paisaje de montaña. Comenzamos en bakio , una encantadora localidad costera famosa por su playa, sus olas que invitan al surf y sus viñedos de txakoli, que rodean al Museo del Txakoli.
La carretera de la costa que conduce a Bermeo guarda dos sorpresas. La primera sale al paso, es San Juan de Gaztelugatxe con su ermita y escalinata dominando el Cantábrico. La otra, el faro de Matxitxako, cuyo desvío aparece a la izquierda tras una cerrada curva.
Bermeo cuenta con larga tradición marinera; su puerto, que abraza el singular casco antiguo, es vigilado por la Torre de Ercilla, que data del siglo XV y hoy alberga el coqueto Museo del Pescador
Hacia gernika-lumo surgen los paisajes únicos de la ría Urdaibai, reserva de la biosfera de UNESCO, con sus playas, humedales y bellas localidades como Mundaka o Sukarrieta. Buen ambiente en Gernika, que presume de su Museo de la Paz, del Árbol que simboliza las libertades vascas, frontón que es una de las cunas de la cesta-punta y una gastronomía espectacular.
Desde Gernika conviene tomar dirección Amorebieta-Etxano y, en la rotonda, el ramal que indica Bilbao. Después, a la altura de Galdakao, conviene elegir la incorporación a la A-8 dirección Santander. Pasada la circunvalación de Bilbao, a la derecha aparece la señal que indica el desvío hacia balmaseda , que se encuentra al final del corredor del Kadagua, pocos kilómetros antes del límite con Burgos y Castilla y León. Se trata de la primera villa fundada
en Bizkaia. Mantiene el trazado medieval, palacetes y conventos, además de un bien conservado puente gótico. Un lugar perfecto para adquirir chocolate artesanal.
Desde Balmaseda, una carretera ascendente serpentea hacia las Encartaciones (Enkarterri). El paisaje se llena de praderas, rebaños, colinas y bosques salpicados por casonas y caseríos. Antes de las estribaciones del puerto de La Escrita aguarda turtzioz . Estacione. Respire. Pasee.

Bizkaia allows you to go from sea breeze to mountains in half a day. We start in bakio , a charming coastal town famous for its beach, surf and the vineyards that surround the Txakoli Museum.
The seaside road leading to bermeo holds two surprises. The first is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe with its hermitage and steps overlooking the Bay of Biscay. The other is the Matxitxako lighthouse, whose turn-off appears on the left after a sharp bend.
Bermeo has a great seafaring tradition and its historic quarter, with a unique old town, is dominated by the 15th-century Ercilla Tower, which now houses the charming Fishing Museum
Towards gernika-lumo lie the unique landscapes of the Urdaibai estuary, a UNESCO biosphere reserve with its beaches, wetlands and beautiful towns such as Mundaka and Sukarrieta. Gernika has a good atmosphe-
re. It has a Peace Museum, a tree that symbolises Basque freedom, a pelota court that is one of the cradles of the cesta-punta and spectacular gastronomy.
From Gernika, take the road towards Amorebieta-Etxano and, at the roundabout, take the exit signposted Bilbao. Then, at Galdakao, take the A-8 towards Santander. Once past the Bilbao ring road, on the right is the sign for the turning to balmaseda , which is at the end of the Kadagua corridor, a few kilometres before the border with Burgos and Castile-León. It is the first town founded in Bizkaia and still preserves its medieval layout, small palaces and convents, as well as a well-preserved Gothic bridge. A perfect place to buy handmade chocolate
From balmaseda, the road climbs towards Encartaciones (Enkarterri). The landscape is full of meadows, flocks, hills and forests dotted with manor houses and farmhouses. At the foot of the La Escrita pass, turtzioz awaits. Pull in. Take a breath. Stroll around.

As temperatures rise and days lengthen, seaside terraces become irresistible
Spring lifts the mist from the coast. The sea seems bluer. It settles down, as if tired of its own winter fury. And the sun begins to greet us. The days lengthen until they fade into a reddish twilight. The breeze is warm now. Everything invites you to sit on a terrace overlooking the sea. There are many of them along the coast of Bizkaia. Some hide a good restaurant. Others boast drinks and a good atmosphere. There are some with fabulous breakfasts. And with barbecues.
Let’s start with Fangaloka, in Azkorri (Getxo). Much more than just a terrace with sensational views of the sea: chill out, sports, gastronomy, drinks, beer... Also in Getxo, Iluna bar and Usategui cafeteria; in the Old Port of the same town, Itxasbide and Satistegui, and soon the Aixerrota mill will open. INDIAN SOPELANA no llamaría la atención en el muelle de Santa Mónica, en California. Donde termina la Ruta 66. Y se encuentra, desde hace 25 años en un lugar igual de icónico pero menos conocido: una colina que se alza a 200 metros de la playa de Larrabasterra. Vistas al mar y ambiente de verano interminable. Gran terraza bajo el sol y la luna. Musicón, siempre. No es rara la presencia de DJs o actuaciones en directo. Igual que las fiestas. Su amplio aparcamiento es de los frecuentados por motocicletas.
Ideal para contemplar el mar y sentir la brisa. O para dejarse llevar por la noche. Y, como no está en Santa Mónica sino en Sopelana, su barra de pintxos es de las que merece la pena.
INDIAN SOPELANA would not be out of place on the Santa Monica Pier in California. Where Route 66 ends. And for the last 25 years it has been in an equally iconic but lesser-known location: a hill 200 metres from Larrabasterra beach. Sea views and endless summer atmosphere. “No hay ciudad importante sin su temporada de ópera”
El auditor Juan Carlos Matellanes lleva más de dos décadas al frente de la asociación que promueve la ópera en Bilbao. Adelanta que la próxima temporada operística “contará con grandes voces y programará títulos representativos de la historia de la ópera junto algún otro con carácter de estreno o menos conocido”
Insiste el presidente de ABAO Bilbao Ópera en que “no existe ninguna ciudad importante sin una buena temporada lírica. Y Bilbao es una ciudad importante”. Se muestra orgulloso de los medios de transporte que la entidad organiza para que puedan asistir a las funciones personas de todo el Territorio, además de las que se acercan desde Burgos, Santander, Logroño, Pamplona, Vitoria-Gasteiz o San Sebastián e incluso más lejos. Y presume del proyecto ‘Tutto Verdi’, una iniciativa de gran envergadura que se desarrolló a lo largo de 16 años, desde 2006 hasta 2022, y que logró representar en Bilbao 30 óperas de Giuseppe Verdi a lo largo de 124 funciones, incluídos 13 estrenos.
Explica Matellanes que resulta difícil hacer entender en otros lugares que los carnets de socio o socia se emiten anualmente antes de conocer el programa de la temporada. Una muestra de confianza en una asociación con más de setenta años de compromiso con la ópera.
¿Qué aporta ABAO a Bilbao?
Somos un caso único: una asociación privada que gestiona una temporada de ópera sin teatro ni orquesta propios y con un presupuesto por debajo de los 8 millones de euros. Aportamos el orgullo de tener algo propio en el aspecto cultural, junto a otros elementos identitarios de la ciudad.
¿Qué balance hace de estos 21 años al frente de ABAO Bilbao Opera?
El balance es muy positivo. Hemos tenido épocas muy buenas para recordar, hemos enfrentado diversos problemas, pero hemos ido desarrollando nuevos proyectos. Cuando se está tanto tiempo es que hay un proyecto que quieres desarrollar y acabar. Y, por supuesto, que existen capacidades más que suficientes y un equipo magnífico comprometido con el proyecto.

“There is no great city without an opera season”
Auditor Juan Carlos Matellanes has been at the helm of the association that promotes opera in Bilbao for more than two decades. He says that the next opera season “will feature great voices and will program representative titles from the history of opera, as well as some premieres and lesser-known titles”
The president of ABAO Bilbao Opera emphasizes that “there is no important city without a good opera season. And Bilbao is a great city”. He is proud of the means of transport that the entity organizes so that people from all over the Territory can attend the concerts, in addition to those who come from Burgos, Santander, Logroño, Pamplona, Vitoria-Gasteiz or San Sebastián and even further afield. And it boasts of the ‘Tutto Verdi’ project, a major initiative that

Además, hemos creado nuevos proyectos como ABAO Txiki, potenciado el programa didáctico y desarrollando actividades culturales con conferencias y publicaciones. Es muy importante subrayar que no somos una asociación elitista o para entendidos: somos una asociación cultural abierta
What does ABAO bring to Bilbao?
We are a rare breed: a private association that runs an opera season without its own theater or orchestra and with a budget of less than 8 million euros. We bring the pride of having something of our own in the cultural aspect, along with other identifying elements of the city.
How do you evaluate these 21 years at the helm of the ABAO Bilbao Opera?
The balance is very positive. We have had some very memorable times, we have faced some problems, but we have continued to develop new projects. When you have been there for so long, there is a project that you want to develop and finish. And, of course, there is more than enough capacity and a great team dedicated to the project.
How has ABAO evolved over the past two decades?
It has undergone a radical change. Moving to the Euskalduna Palace allowed us to produce our own shows, which was impossible in the old Coliseo, as well as being able to put tickets on sale for each performance. In addition, we have created new projects such as ABAO Txiki, strengthened the didactic program and developed cultural activities with conferences and publications. It is very important to emphasize that we are not an elitist association or an association for experts: we are an open cultural association

En el éxito de Mutur beltz confluyen el valle de Karrantza, que extiende sus paisajes únicos por el oriente de Bizkaia, la artista malagueña Laura Siles, la txalaparta, el pastor Joseba Edesa, una experiencia en Islandia y las ovejas latxas de cara negra, conocidas como muturbeltz. El talento, el trabajo y los pastos de Karrantza dieron como fruto una marca artesanal que rescata una lana hasta hace poco sin valor y tratada como residuo. Hoy, sorprende con sus ovillos, prendas, complementos y tapices. Y no paran de ganar premios.
La artista malagueña Laura Siles, en pleno periodo doctoral, escuchó txalaparta y se acercó desde el Mediterráneo al Cantábrico a conocerla mejor. Se quedó en Bizkaia. Pasó por Islandia a completar un Erasmus relacionado con su formación artística. “En 2013 conocí a Joseba Edesa. Desde entonces, dejamos de pensar y trabajar en singular. Juntos, fuimos gestando un humilde sueño común, la conjunción de nuestras pasiones en un proyecto de vida: Mutur Beltz.

Un año más tarde viajó nuevamente a Islandia con una beca de residencia artística en Gullkistan, una granja creativa situada en un pequeño pueblo llamado Laugarvatn, gracias a una beca de la Diputación Foral de Bizkaia. “Cuál no sería mi grata sorpresa que una rueca de hilar me esperaba en el estudio: Alda Sigurðardóttir, la directora de la residencia de arte, me enseñó a hilar”, recuerda la artista. Joseba también viajó a Islandia. “Visitamos pequeñas cooperativas de mujeres donde trabajan la lana, nos enseñaron a lavar, cardar, hilar con huso, etc. Al regresar tuvimos la gran satisfacción de hacer el primer ovillo de lana a partir del vellón de las ovejas de cara negra del aita de Joseba”

The success of Mutur beltz brings together the Karrantza valley, which extends its unique landscapes to the east of Bizkaia, the Malaga artist Laura Siles, the txalaparta, the shepherd Joseba Edesa, an experience in Iceland and the black-faced latxa sheep, known as muturbeltz. Talent, hard work and the pastures of Karrantza have given birth to an artisan brand that rescues wool that, until recently, had no value and was treated as waste. Today it surprises with its balls of yarn, garments, accessories and tapestries. And they keep winning prizes.
Laura Siles, an artist from Málaga, was in the middle of her doctorate when she heard txalaparta and left the Mediterranean for the Bay of Biscay to get to know it better. She stayed in Bizkaia. She went to Iceland to complete an Erasmus programme tied to her artistic training. “In 2013 I met Joseba Edesa. Since then we have stopped thinking and working individually. Together we started to develop a modest common
dream, the combination of our passions in a life project: Mutur Beltz. This project was born from the pastoral origins of Joseba’s family, infected by our common interest in the world of sheep, taking the black-faced Carranza sheep as a starting point,” explains Siles.
A year later, thanks to a scholarship from the Bizkaia County Council, she returned to Iceland as an artist in residence at Gullkistan, a creative farm in the small village of Laugarvatn. “What a pleasant surprise to find a spinning wheel waiting for me in the studio: Alda Sigurðardóttir, the director of the residency, taught me how to spin,’’ the artist recalls. Joseba also travelled to Iceland. We visited small women’s cooperatives where they work with wool, and they taught us how to wash, card, spin with a spindle, and so on. When we returned, we had the great satisfaction of making the first ball of wool from the fleece of Joseba’s father’s black-faced sheep’.

What is the txalaparta?
The sound that the music student from Malaga wanted to get to know better was that of the txalaparta. It is an ancient autochthonous percussion instrument described in the Auñamendi Encyclopaedia as follows:
This beaten idiophone, called txalaparta, consists of three main parts: one or more wooden planks placed horizontally on a soft material; a pair of supports to hold them in place, which can be two upside-down baskets, two chairs or two boxes; four truncated cone-shaped wooden sticks with which the planks are beaten vertically’’.
The same encyclopaedia of Basque culture adds: “On the one hand, it is linked to work; on the other, it is clear that the traditional txalaparta has always been played at festive occasions. It is also curious that txalaparta has always been played at night. Throughout the world, there is music and ways of playing that are related to work and its rhythms, similar to the txalaparta and its variants”.

La secular relación entre el País Vasco e Islandia
Los viajes de Laura Siles y Joseba Edesa a Islandia resultaron vitales para el nacimiento de Mutur Beltz. Se trata de un caso más de la secular relación entre el País Vasco e Islandia. Una entente que comenzó hace casi 500 años al compartir la pesca del bacalao y la caza de la ballena, y que llegó incluso a crear un pidgin, es decir, un rudimentario protoidioma, que mezclaba euskera e islandés. Itsasmuseum Bilbao acogió hace unos meses una interesante exposición sobre este singular sistema de comunicación.
¿Qué es la txalaparta?
El sonido que la entonces estudiante de música malagueña quiso conocer mejor es el de la txalaparta. Se trata de un antiguo instrumento musical autóctono de percusión que la enciclopedia Auñamendi describe así:
“Tres son las partes principales de las que se compone este idiófono golpeado denominado txalaparta: uno o más tablones de madera colocados horizontalmente sobre un material mullido; un par de soportes para sujetarlos que pueden ser dos cestos boca abajo, dos sillas o dos cajas; cuatro palos troncocónicos de madera con los que se golpean verticalmente los tablones”
La misma enciclopedia de la cultura vasca añade que “si por un lado está relacionada con el trabajo, por otro lado es evidente que la presencia de la txalaparta tradicional siempre se ha dado en ambientes festivos. También es curioso el hecho de que los toques siempre se realizaran de noche. Por todo el mundo se conocen músicas y formas de interpretar relacionadas con el trabajo y sus ritmos, similares a la txalaparta y sus variantes”.
Hoy en día puede escucharse la txalaparta, por ejemplo, al comienzo de los partidos del Athletic de Bilbao en San Mamés.

The age-old relationship between the Basque Country and Iceland
Laura Siles and Joseba Edesa’s trips to Iceland were crucial to the creation of Mutur Beltz. It is another example of the centuries-old relationship between the Basque Country and Iceland. An alliance that began almost 500 years ago when they shared cod fishing and whaling, and which even led to the creation of a pidgin, that is, a rudimentary proto-language, which mixed Basque and Icelandic. A few months ago, Itsasmuseum Bilbao hosted an interesting exhibition on this unique communication system.

Desde luego, si visita la capital de Bizkaia y va a hablar usted de fútbol, debe saber unas cuantas cosas. El Athletic Club, conocido como Athletic de Bilbao, es un club de fútbol con una rica historia y una identidad singular. Fue fundado en 1898 y es uno de los tres únicos clubes que han disputado todas las temporadas de la Primera

Otras de las singularidades del Athletic es que celebra sus triunfos recorriendo la ría de Bilbao, desde la desembocadura hasta el Puente del Ayuntamiento, en una de las barcazas o gabarras que tradicionalmente surcaban las mismas aguas cargando, por ejemplo, mineral de hierro. Un millón de personas participaron en la celebración del título de Copa el año pasado.

Aunque el Athletic disputó sus choques como local en otros lugares, hace más de 110 años que su sede se encuentra en San Mamés. Hubo un caserío del mismo nombre junto a una pequeña ermita dedicada al mártir de Capadocia que fue expuesto a leones. De ahí que el sobrenombre del equipo sea ‘Los Leones’
El antiguo San Mamés fue inaugurado el 21 de agosto de 1913. Sufrió varias remodelaciones para adaptarse a las necesidades del club y del público hasta que fue demolido en 2013 para dar paso al nuevo estadio que ocupa más o menos el mismo solar. Las obras comenzaron en 2010 y se realizaron en varias fases, permitiendo al Athletic Club seguir jugando en su estadio durante la construcción. Tiene capacidad para más de 53.000 espectadores, cuenta con instalaciones de última generación, incluyendo palcos VIP, zonas de restauración, un museo, zona comercial, restaurante o cafetería.
La Catedral, que es como siempre se ha conocido popularmente al estadio del Athletic, ha recibido numerosos premios arquitectónicos por su diseño innovador y su funcionalidad, además del reconocimiento de mejor edificio deportivo del mundo en World Architecture Festival 2015 celebrado en Singapur. Por supuesto, cumple con los requerimientos de un estadio ‘categoría Elite’, la más alta según la UEFA. Además, siempre se encuentra entre los campos con mayor índice de ocupación de la liga española.

The Cathedral of football
Despite playing their home games elsewhere, Athletic have been based in San Mamés for over 110 years. There was a hamlet of the same name and a small chapel dedicated to the martyr of Caesarea, who was sacrificed to lions. Hence the team’s nickname, ‘Los Leones’.
The old San Mamés was inaugurated on 21 August 1913. It underwent several renovations to adapt to the needs of the club and the public until it was demolished in 2013 to make way for the new stadium, which occupies more or less the same site. Work began in 2010 and was carried out in several phases, allowing the Athletic Club to continue playing in their stadium during construction. It has a capacity of more than 53,000 spectators and state-of-the-art facilities, including VIP boxes, catering areas, a museum, shopping area, restaurant and cafeteria.
La Catedral, as Athletic’s stadium has always been popularly known, has received numerous architectural awards for its innovative design and functionality, as well as being recognised as the best sports building in the world at the World Architecture Festival 2015 in Singapore. Of course, it meets the requirements of an ‘Elite category’ stadium, the highest according to UEFA. In addition, it is always among the stadiums with the highest occupancy rates in the Spanish league.
The greatest thing of all, however, cannot be expressed in words and that is to experience a game in San Mamés.

Under the spell of the warmer months, the arts take to the streets. The Fantastic and Horror Film Festival - FANT celebrates its 30th edition from 3 to 11 May. This year’s visual theme focuses on the now classic film of the genre, Friday the 13th.
From 15 to 18 May, Leioa celebrates a quarter of a century of laughter with Umore Azoka (Humour Fair). The programme includes local and international premieres of dance, clown theatre, puppetry, visual arts, magic, music, performance and circus.
A month later, on the nights of the 13th and 14th, Bilbao celebrates the anniversary of its foundation 725 years ago. The façades of emblematic buildings and public
spaces are decorated with light shows, music, images and sound. Le costará a usted encontrar este tipo de establecimiento fuera de Bizkaia. Es probable que nacieran como una evolución de los txakolis que abundaban en Bilbao y su entorno hasta finales del XIX. La urbanización de la entonces periferia de la ciudad condujo a la desaparición de aquellos caseríos y sus viñedos. Aparecieron fábricas de cerveza locales. Algunas muy famosas. Y aplicaron la fórmula del txakoli para sus establecimientos: mesas y bancos corridos bajo arbolados, terrazas al aire libre, bebida en jarras, platos muy sencillos y precios económicos. El éxito fue inmediato. Pronto, el pollo asado en espetón se sumó al chorizo, las tortillas y las ensaladas. Hoy son muchísimas las ‘cerveceras’ en Bilbao y Bizkaia. Más o menos sofisticadas. jardines para peques. Son perfectas para el buen tiempo, las celebraciones en grupo y el ambiente festivo.

You will struggle to find this type of establishment outside Bizkaia. They were probably born as an evolution of the txakolis that were common in Bilbao and its surroundings until the end of the 19th century. The urbanisation of the then outskirts of the city led to the disappearance of those farmhouses and their vineyards. Local breweries appeared. Some of them very famous. And they applied the txakoli formula to their establishments: tables and benches under trees, open-air terraces, drinks in jugs, very simple dishes and low prices. The success was immediate. Chorizo, omelettes and salads were soon joined by roast chicken on a spit. Today there are many ‘cerveceras’ in Bilbao and Bizkaia. More or less sophisticated. Some have play areas or gardens for children.
They are perfect for good weather, group celebrations and a festive atmosphere.

Los conciertos de figuras destacadas del Jazz y el concurso de grupos se desarrollan en la sala Muxikebarri.
A mediados de julio, la cita inexcusable es Txapel Reggae en Armintza, entre Bilbao y Bakio. Un festival que suena desde 1990, congrega a incondicionales de los ritmos jamaicanos y programa artistas locales e internacionales en un evento gratuito que también programa pasacalles, mas-

Artxanda is one of the most emblematic places in Bilbao. It provides a wide variety of leisure activities that are different from what you can find in the big city of Bilbao. The first must-see is the Artxanda viewpoint, which offers a complete panoramic view of Bilbao from the Txorierri valley all the way to the airport. It is like having at your feet a three-dimensional map of the city, the course of the estuary and a good part of the hills and mountains of the Territory. Basque language is spoken on both sides of the western end of the Pyrenees, which means that it covers territories belonging to both Spain and France. The latest figures indicate that some 900,000 people understand or are able to speak Basque.
