LÓPEZ-NUSSA CON LAS PUERTAS ABIERTAS A LA COMPOSICIÓN

Recientemente, fuiste merecedor del primer premio en el IV Concurso SGAE para Obras de Jazz Tete Montoliu 2021, por tu composición A Lyle. ¿Qué significó para ti recibir este reconocimiento en un concurso en el que compitieron alrededor de 151 piezas musicales de todo el mundo?

Tuve la suerte y la dicha de obtener el primer premio en el concurso Tete Montoliu, un concurso de la Sociedad General de Autores y Editores para compositores de jazz. El tema que presenté se llama A Lyle, su título se debe a que está dedicado al gran pianista y compositor Lyle Mays, parte de la banda de Pat Metheny Group, a quien admiro mucho. Este tema se lo dedico cuando me entero de la triste noticia de su fallecimiento. Está inspirado en un choro que hizo Lyle, bellísimo, y dedicó a Egberto Gismonti, un grande de la música brasileña.

Esta melodía me vino a la cabeza al recordar su choro, la tuve toda la noche en la mente y hasta que no me senté al piano y la desarrollé y la escribí no pude dormir. Durante este proceso se da la oportunidad de presentarme al concurso y llevé este tema. Estuve meses sin saber y de repente recibo un mail diciéndome que estaba entre los cuatro finalistas de entre 151 obras que se presentaron. Cuando me entero de esta noticia, para mí, ese fue el premio. Eran músicos increíbles, con grandes carreras y estar entre los 4 finalistas era algo que no me esperaba, fue una sorpresa y una felicidad increíbles. Después de esto, me entero de que obtuve el primer premio y estoy muy feliz con la notica y el momento que estoy viviendo.

Recently, you were awarded the first prize in the IV SGAE Contest for Jazz Works "Tete Montoliu" 2021, for your piece called A Lyle. What did it mean to you to be recognized in a competition that included about 151 pieces of music from around the world?

Listening to Ruy talk about music and his family is a fantastic experience for anyone who has had the opportunity to chat with the young composer. The freshness and excitement that permeate the composer's words when he speaks about his life as an artist, a journey that was born with him, is the soul of each of his works.

Bienvenidos approached the musical life of Ruy Adrián López-Nussa in an interview with the composer.

I was lucky and fortunate enough to win the first prize in the Tete Montoliu contest, a competition organized by the General Society of Authors and Publishers for jazz composers. The song I presented is called A Lyle, dedicated to the great pianist and composer Lyle Mays, a member of the Pat Metheny Group, whom I admire very much. I dedicate this song to him when I hear the sad news of his passing. It is inspired by a beautiful choro that Lyle made which is dedicated to Egberto Gismonti, a great Brazilian musician. This melody came to my head when I remembered his choro, I had it in my mind all night and until I sat down at the piano and developed it and wrote it down I couldn't sleep. During this process I was given the opportunity to enter the contest and I chose this song. I spent months without getting news and suddenly I received an email telling me that I was one of the four finalists among the 151 pieces that had been submitted. When I heard this news, for me, that was the prize. Talented musicians had participated, with great careers, and to be among the 4 finalists was something I didn't expect, it was an incredible surprise and it brought me so much happiness. After this, I found out that I had gotten the first prize and it felt amazing to hear the news, to be living this moment.

How does this award influence Ruy's future as a composer?

Aside from its importance as a competition of tremendous impact due to its features, because of those who compete, and also taking into account the incredible jazz pieces that were created around the world, the award has a vital feature: the name of the great Spanish jazz pianist Tete Montoliu, an artist with an impressive international career. This is a commitment to honor his name. Besides, this experience is a game changer for me because it can be the start of a career as a composer, I can see it that way. The audience knows I am an instrumentalist, but now I'm being acknowledged as a composer as well, although I have accomplished several things in this field. This award gives me undeniable courage to continue writing and producing.

¿Cómo influye esta premiación en el futuro de Ruy como compositor?

El premio, además de la importancia que tiene, como concurso de un peso inmenso por sus características, quienes se presentan y las composiciones de jazz increíbles que hay en el mundo, tiene algo muy importante: el nombre del gran pianista español de jazz Tete Montoliu, con una carrera internacional impresionante; ya eso es como un compromiso de hacer y quedar bien con el nombre. Además, es algo definitorio para mí porque puede ser el inicio de una carrera como compositor, lo puedo ver de esa manera. El público me conoce como instrumentista pero no como compositor aunque yo sí he hecho varias cosas en este campo. La confianza que me da este premio para seguir adelante, componiendo y creando es innegable.

Ruy Adrián López-Nussa se ha presentado en algunos de los más grandes escenarios de la escena jazzística y es merecedor de la admiración y el respeto de los amantes del género. ¿En qué nuevos proyectos trabajas y qué puede esperar tu público en un futuro?

Hemos recorrido mi hermano y yo, bastante, hemos estado en los escenarios más importantes a nivel nacional e internacional, en los más grandes festivales de jazz: el North Sea Festival, Marciac, Montreal Jazz Festival; también en los clubes más grandes Blue Note Jazz Club, de Tokio y de New York, los festivales de Estados Unidos más reconocidos como el Newport Jazz Festival, Detroit Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival; en fin, infinidades de lugares con un prestigio inmenso en el que hemos tenido la dicha de estar y eso es algo que te nutre

Ruy Adrián López-Nussa has performed on some of the biggest stages of the jazz scene and deserves the admiration and respect of jazz lovers. What new projects are you working on and what can your audience expect in the future?

We have been together, my brother and me, on the most important stages on the island and around the world, in the biggest jazz festivals: the North Sea Festival, the Marciac, the Montreal Jazz Festival; also in the biggest clubs; Blue Note Jazz Clubs, in Tokyo and New York, the most renowned festivals in the United States, such as the

Newport Jazz Festival, the Detroit Jazz Festival, the Playboy Jazz Festival; in short, countless places with immense prestige we've had the pleasure of visiting, and that is something that nourishes you immensely.

You get to meet and share the stage with many musicians and that fills you with life. At the moment I have just finished making the music for a documentary with my brother Harold López-Nussa and we are involved in a project that we have just recently come up with called Los Tres Mosqueteros, created by William Roblejo, Harold López-Nussa and myself. We have recorded three songs and we are now creating and composing, all of us, together.

The Bis Music label is interested in the project and we are totally invested on it; we hope that something nice comes out and we can show it to the public on stage soon.

En estos momentos acabo de terminar la música para un documental con mi hermano Harold López-Nussa y estamos involucrados en un proyecto que acabamos de crear recientemente que se llama Los Tres Mosqueteros, lo creamos William Roblejo, Harold López-Nussa y yo. Tenemos grabados tres temas y estamos ahora creando y componiendo los tres juntos.

La discográfica Bis Music está interesada en el proyecto y estamos en esto al cien por ciento, esperamos que salga algo bien bonito y podamos mostrarlo al público en los escenarios pronto.
