Geografía: Ubicada a la entrada del golfo de México, el archipiélago cubano está formado por la isla de Cuba, la Isla de la Juventud y aproximadamente 4,195 cayos e islotes. Cerca de 140 km la separan las Bahamas; 77 km Haití; 180 km de Florida; 210 km Cancún y 146 km de Jamaica. La silueta de Cuba, alargada y estrecha, alcanza los 120 km de longitud y entre 32 y 145 km de ancho. En total el territorio abarca 110.922 km, lo que la distingue como la mayor de las Antillas y por su ubicación geográfica la llaman también la llave del Golfo.

El XIX Festival Internacional Fiesta del Tambor Guillermo Barreto in memoriam, que tendrá lugar entre los días 23 y 29 del presente mes, está dedicado a África, madre de todos los ritmos. La diversa y vigorosa música africana − mezcla de la cultura e identidad de más de cuarenta naciones− aporta rasgos melódicos específicos que se han heredado en una suerte de esencia cultural, al igual que el uso de numerosos instrumentos − esencialmente de percusión−. El arribo de esclavos desde África, en el período colonial americano, determinó la presencia de ritmos que mediaron de manera terminante en la conformación musical de cada país de la región. El tango, el jazz, la habanera, el son, la rumba, el blues y el candomblé entre otros comparten el origen africano.

Cuba es la primera colonia española a la que llegaron los africanos. Ya en 1518 existían esclavos aquí −y este proceso de introducción se extiende hasta principios del sigloXVII−; dichos esclavos trajeron religiones, dioses, ritos, música, cantos y bailes propios, pues lo único que les fue permitido traer consigo, atesorar y defender fue su espiritualidad. Tal supervivencia de la cultura africana, permitió que esta interactúe con la propia de los colonizadores españoles y provocó el proceso de transculturación, resultado de las mezclas de todos esos elementos culturales. La potente y rica rítmica africana regó así con su savia la creación musical, primero de América −donde aparece ya en el siglo XVIII una música bailable de poderosas raíces populares−, y luego del mundo entero, dejando una huella que se fortalece con el paso de los años.

A great drum party dedicated to Africa The XIX Guillermo Barreto in memoriam International Drum Festival, which will take place from March 23 to 29, is dedicated to Africa, mother of all rhythms. The diverse and vigorous African music -a mixture of the culture and identity of more than forty nations- provides specific melodic features that have been inherited in some sort of cultural essence, as well as the use of numerous instruments, essentially percussion ones. The arrival of slaves from Africa, in the American colonial period, introduced rhythms that directly influenced the musical conformation of each country in the region. Tango, jazz, habanera, son, rumba, blues and candomble; they all have an African ancestry.

Cuba was the first Spanish colony to which the Africans arrived. Already in 1518 there were slaves here -and this process of introduction extends until the early seventeenth century-; these slaves brought religious beliefs, gods, rites, music, songs and dances of their own, because the only thing they were allowed to bring, treasure and defend was their spirituality. The survival of this part of African culture, allowed it to interact with that of the Spanish colonizers and caused the process of transculturation, which resulted from the mixture of all those cultural elements. The powerful and ancient African rhythm thus irrigated the musical creation with its lifeblood, first in America -where populardancesand songs appeared in the 18th century-and then in the rest of the world, leaving a mark that grew stronger with time.

Los esclavos reprodujeron sus tradicionales instrumentos de percusión y, aunque sufrieron trasformaciones en su formato, aún conservan una sólida y perenne representación en la música cubana. Güiros, shekeré, pailas, claves, tumbadoras, bongoes, batás y maracas forman parte de las raíces culturales de la isla. Muchos han sido los músicos cubanos herederos del inmenso legado de la percusión africana; entre los destacados instrumentistas que han alcanzado fama internacional se cuentan Tata Güines, Chano Pozo, Mongo Santamaría y José Luis Quintana Fuentes “Changuito”. Pero hay una figura venerada por muchos percusionistas cubanos de todas las generaciones: Guillermo Barreto [La Habana, 11 de agosto de 1929-14 de diciembre de 1991], considerado uno de los mejores bateristas de la historia de la música en Cuba, por lo que el Festival Internacional Fiesta el Tambor lleva su nombre. Sostenía que uno de los aportes fundamentales de la percusión es el respeto a la melodía y predicó con el ejemplo, desde su posición de “guardián de la clave cubana”. Como baterista del cabaret Tropicana en los años 40 del pasado siglo, compartió escenario con Nat King Cole, Lucho Gatica, Johnny Richards, Tommy Dorsey y Tito Puente. En 1957 actuaba en el Sevilla Biltmore con la orquesta del reconocido Bebo Valdés. Su compañera en la vida fue la cantante de música afrocubana Merceditas Valdés [La Habana, 1928-1996], quien fuera nombrada por Don Fernando Ortiz −el llamado tercer descubridor de Cuba−“La pequeña Aché de Cuba”. The slaves replicated their traditional percussion instruments and, although they underwent physical transformations, still retain a solid and perennial representation in Cuban music. Güiros, shekeré, pailas, claves, tumbadoras, bongoes, batás and maracas are part of the cultural heritage of the island.

Many have been the Cuban musicians who paid tribute to the immense legacy of African percussion. Among the prominent instrumentalists who have achieved international fame are Tata Güines, Chano Pozo, Mongo Santamaria and Jose Luis Quintana Fuentes aka “Changuito”. But there is a figure revered by many Cuban percussionists of all generations: Guillermo Barreto [Havana, August 11, 1929 - December 14, 1991], considered one of the best drummers in the history of music in Cuba, and therefore the International Drum Festival was named in his honor.

As drummer of the Tropicana cabaret in the 40’s of the last century, he shared the stage with Nat King Cole, Lucho Gatica, Johnny Richards, Tommy Dorsey and Tito Puente. In 1957 he performed at Sevilla Biltmore with the orchestra of the renowned Bebo Valdes. His life partner was the Afro-Cuban singer Merceditas Valdes [Havana, 1928-1996], who was named by Don Fernando Ortiz (the so-called third discoverer of Cuba)“the Little Aché de Cuba”. As you see, dear reader, there are plenty of reasons to attend the Drum Festival, which between rhythms and drums,invites you to discover the AfroCuban culture.

Born in the popular Havana neighborhood of Santa Amalia, Barreto was also known for his “parrot leg” because he walked with short steps. This imaginative and intuitive musician had a privileged musical ear; he was in love with drums, an instrument he described as “exciting and charismatic”, although the whole world recognized him as a great timbalero; he also dominated the tumbadora, the bongoes and the güiro.

El Festival Piña Colada, que arriba a su decimoséptima edición, se apropiará nuevamente de varios escenarios de la central provincia Ciego de Ávila, entre el 2 y el 5 del próximo mes de abril y será inaugurado por el popular músico cubano Cimafunk . Piña Colada es el evento de la música fusión, alternativa y contemporánea en Cuba; y convoca cada año a numerosos cultores de estos géneros de todo el país, así como a investigadores, críticos y promotores musicales. El programa −abarcador en conciertos, pasacalles de grupos teatrales, tertulias literarias, exposiciones de artes plásticas y venta de artesanías− incluye el segmento teórico Simposio Música, juventud y sociedad, en el cual se realizarán conferencias, proyecciones audiovisuales, presentaciones de libros y encuentrosdebates. El Festival alcanzó el pasado año un rotundo éxito, pues logró reunir músicos y agrupaciones de probada calidad y popularidad en Cuba y el extranjero, tales como Descemer Bueno, Orishas, Alain Pérez, el dúo Buena Fe, David Torrens y

el presidente fundador de esta fiesta de la música fusión en Cuba, Arnaldo Rodríguez. El director del Talismán escogió su provincia natal para el evento con el objetivo de favorecer que se sumen a este los artistas locales. El destinatario principal de Piña Colada es la juventud, sin embargo, sus propuestas comprenden multiplicidad de géneros que son interpretados por músicos de diferentes generaciones, estilos y tendencias melódicas, unidos en el anhelo de resaltar la cultura tradicional cubana; de esta suerte, todos los segmentos de edades pueden hacer la selección a partir de sus gustos e intereses. An event dedicated to fusion in Cuba

The Festival was a resounding success last year, for it brought together high-quality foreign and national musicians, such as Descemer Bueno, Orishas, Alain Perez, the Buena Fe duo, David Torrens and the founding president of this party of fusion music in Cuba, Arnaldo Rodriguez. The director of Talisman chose his home town for the event with the purpose of encouraging local artists to join the celebration.

The Piña Colada Festival, on its seventeenth edition, will take over several stages in the central province of Ciego de Avila, from April 2 to 5, and it will be inaugurated by the popular Cuban musician Cimafunk. Piña Colada is an event dedicated to fusion, alternative and contemporary music in Cuba; and it summons each year the best performers across the country, as well as researchers, critics and music promoters. The program includes concerts, theater group parades, literary gatherings, plastic arts exhibitions and handicraft sales, as well as the academic segment Music, Youth and Society Symposium, where conferences, audiovisual projections, book presentations, debates and meetings will be held.

Young people are always the target audience of the Festival, however, its schedule includes a multiplicity of genres that are performed by musicians and singers of different generations, melodic styles and trends, gathered by the common goal to highlight traditional Cuban culture. In this way, all age groups can enjoy this party based on their tastes and interests. The essential purpose of the organizers is to contribute to the formation of an audience that appreciates the most genuine values of Cuban music and those who make it. This is also the perfect occasion for new talented artists to show us their first productions.

El concierto de apertura del XVII Festival Piña Colada estará a cargo del vocalista, compositor y productor musical cubano Erik Iglesias, conocido como Cimafunk, −nombre artístico en el que el talentoso músico unió los vocablos cimarrón y funk− queen2018 se apropió de todos los canales de trasmisión musical de la isla con su tema “Me voy”, del primer fonograma Terapia [2017]. Por si fuera poco, a fines de 2019, su canción “El Potaje” se situó en el número seis de la lista de mejores composiciones del año, según el proyecto estadounidense de medios de comunicación NPR Music −que pertenece a la NationalPublic Radio− y apareció en la nómina de artistas latinos que la revista estadounidense Billboard recomendó escuchar. Piña Colada anuncia una arrancada de lujo y garantiza ser una sólida y prometedora opción dirigida a todos los que visiten Cuba −en especial, los veraneantes de los Cayos Coco y Guillermo, en los Jardines del Rey−. Así podrán disfrutar la música cubana de mayor actualidad y riqueza sonora y, sobre todo, bailar al compás de varias afamadas agrupaciones del patio.

Since it was founded in 2004, according to Arnaldo Rodriguez’s idea, Piña Colada has opted to promote the nation’s musical heritage by opening the stage to the most contemporary and diverse of Cuban sound scene. From all over the country, dozens of musicians will attend this magical meeting, where underground and alternative expressions also have their place, in order to satisfy the demands of the young public. Sponsored by the Cuban Institute of Music, the Company of Editions and Musical Recordings [Egrem] and Artex, among other institutions, the festival will be officially held in the following places: the Teatro Principal, the Plaza Máximo Gómez, the Marti Park, the Patio de Artex, the subsidiary of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba and the Hermanos Saiz Association [AHS]. The opening concert of the XVII Piña Colada Festival will be in charge of Cuban vocalist, composer and music producer Erik Iglesias, known as Cimafunk, an artistic nickname in which the talented musician combined the words cimarrón and funk. Back in 2018, he appropriated all musical stations of the island with its song "Me voy", from first phonogram Terapia [2017]. La XIX edición del Concurso y Festival Internacional Fiesta del Tambor Guillermo Barreto in memoriam, tendrá lugar entre los días 23 y 29 del presente mes, en varias locaciones de La Habana, bajo el slogan “África madre de todos los ritmos”. En la gala inaugural de la Fiesta del Tambor, el día 23 a las 6:00 de la tarde en la Plaza Vieja del centro histórico de La Habana, actuará el Cabildo de la Habana. El programa del evento se caracteriza por la diversidad y contempla espectáculos de agrupaciones musicales del patio y foráneas; atractivas competencias de casino, rumba y percusión, en la Casa de la Música de Plaza −2 y 31, Vedado− y el teatro América −Galiano entre Neptuno y Concordia− donde, igualmente, se desarrollarán clases magistrales de danza y otras manifestaciones artísticas relacionadas. Las clases magistrales sobre diversos temas serán impartidas por expertos cubanos como Adel González, Juanito Gómez y Johannes García. Weedie Braimah y Talisse Campbell, de Ghana, expondrán también sus saberes acerca del djembe africano y las danzas de Ghana y Mali.

Among the guests from other latitudes we have the great jazz star Pat Metheny, who will be visiting Cuba for the first time. The acclaimed guitarist, winner of 20 Grammys, will perform on March 28 at the Karl Marx Theater. Metheny will be there with his band, which includes renowned instrumentalists such as jazz drummer and composer Antonio Sanchez, from Mexico; Malaysian-Australian bassist Linda May Han Oh and British pianist Gwilym Simcock. EL TURISTA PUEDE EXPORTAR: Hasta veinte (20) unidades de tabaco torcido sueltos, sin necesidad de presentar ningún documento. Hasta cincuenta ( 50) unidades de tabaco torcido, con la condición que estén contenidos en el envases originales, cerrado, sellado y con el holograma oficial establecido, exigencias sin las cuales no se autoriza la exportación. Cantidad en exceso de cincuenta (50) unidades de tabaco torcido, las cuales no pueden exceder el valor de los 5,000.00 CUC, deben presentar la factura de venta oficial expedida por la red de tiendas autorizadas a comercializar tabacos torcidos cubanos, correspondiente a todo el tabaco torcido que intenten extraer y que necesariamente tiene que estar contenidos en envases originales, cerrados y sellados y con el holograma oficial establecido. Las cantidades de tabaco torcido en exceso de las cincuentas (50) unidades que no sea declarado por el viajero y cualquier cantidad que exceda lo declarado, o que habiéndose declarado no se acredite su adquisición lícita mediante la factura de venta oficial o los envases no posean los atributos y demás exigencias que lo identifican como tabaco torcido cubano, dará lugar al decomiso. De igual forma podrá llevar hasta 3 botellas de licor y 200 cigarrillos, Souvenirs o recuerdos de su estancia en el país.
