Could you share your life with an adult with learning disabilities?

O

ctober 17-25th is Shared Lives week, where Shared Lives carers, schemes and people who use Shared Lives services come together across the country to raise the profile of Shared Lives and encourage more people to get involved. The theme this year is #AllAboutTheMatch focusing on the unique in depth matching process that is central to the success of Shared Lives and brings together people with common interests, values and experiences. Shared Lives Bedford enables adults with learning disabilities to experience life in a family setting, either long term or for a short break, or by having support to access community activities such as going to the theatre, cinema, out for meals, visiting the pub or just going for a walk and chat. The service is run by Bedford Borough Council and is based in Kempston. Across the country, around 12,000 are supported by Shared Lives schemes. The role of Shared Lives Bedford is to recruit new Shared Lives Carers to support adults with learning disabilities, providing training throughout the approval process and afterwards to ensure they are able to meet the needs of the adult with learning disabilities. They also provide a monitoring and supporting role for Shared Lives Carers and the service users.

4

Anyone who lives in Bedford Borough, who would like the opportunity to offer support and life experiences to adults with learning disabilities, can become a Shared Lives Carer. This can range from a few hours a week or month by helping an individual to access community activities like theatre, swimming or the cinema during the day, evenings or weekends, or by providing short-term respite support and accommodation or alternatively long-term support and accommodation. This is a paid role. Shared Lives Bedford is currently looking to recruit potential Shared Lives carers to provide anything from a few hours a week to long term placements. Whatever time you have this can make a difference to a person’s life. Being approved as a carer takes time, commitment and dedication, but once approved the role is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. Alex Fox, Chief Executive of Shared Lives Plus, the UK wide network for Shared Lives schemes and carers said, “It’s great to see Shared Lives Bedford playing such a positive role in celebrating Shared Lives Week 2015. By raising awareness of Shared Lives and supporting more people to access it, we can make sure that even more people get the support they need to live well” If you would like to know more about Shared Lives Bedford and becoming a carer please contact us on 01234 228414 or at Sharedlives@bedford.gov.uk or check out #AllAboutTheMatch on twitter

NATIONS UNITE AT ‘THE CAGE

A

free to attend, 5-a-side football session takes place every Tuesday, from 6pm – 7pm, at ‘The Cage’ at The Salvation Army on Commercial Road, Bedford. The #JustTurnUp programme, delivered by the Borough Borough Council via Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund project, always welcomes new members. The aim of the session is to create an opportunity for local people from a range of ethnic backgrounds to take part in sport within their own community.

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Players integrate brilliantly – the international language of football has flowed. In particular, physical activity is central to the quality of life of young people, as a key source of friendship, networks and self-identity, especially in the absence of work, full-time education or family responsibilities.” For more information on the #JustTurnUp programme, contact Robert Lindsay at Bedford Borough Council on 01234 718825 alternatively, email robert.lindsay@bedford.gov.uk

Employing a Tradesman and NOT a cowboy!

S

adly over the years I have dealt with far too many cases of consumers who have employed the services of a rogue tradesman and have paid a heavy price for their mistake. But how do you find a good tradesman to carry out work in your home or garden? Here are my top tips: NEVER employ the services of someone who knocks at your door offering their services. If a builder, roofer or plumber has time to cold call people, then they’re obviously not very busy. Why are they not very busy? BECAUSE THEY’RE PROBABLY NOT VERY GOOD! A good tradesman will be busy with work for weeks in advance. I am always similarly sceptical of anybody who tells you on the phone they can do a job for you that day. Always ask your friends and neighbours if they can recommend a good tradesman when you decide you need some work doing. It may sound simple, but the best way I have always found to employ the services of someone good, is to use your trusted contacts. Chances are if they did a good job for your best friend or next door neighbour, they’ll do a good job for you too. Make sure you always get at least 3 quotes from different people before you decide who to use. Don’t necessarily use the cheapest, but at least if you have a range of quotes you can ensure that you are not overpaying for work to be undertaken. I

generally go for the quote in the middle as long as I have a good feeling about the tradesman and feel I can communicate effectively with him/her. Always ask for references (particularly when you’re using someone to carry out a large job). Don’t be afraid to make contact with their previous customers and ask if you can go and look at the job they did. Ask them if they had any problems and what the tradesman/company was like at resolving those problems. It is very important that you agree a method of payment before work begins. I personally do not pay for work until it has been completed. If the builder/electrician/plumber needs to buy parts etc for the job, then I am happy to pay for that on the basis of a receipt, however I insist on paying for labour costs on completion of the job. When you’re dealing with a large job (eg an extension), then I would agree a payment plan in writing. However, you should always ensure a large enough final payment is retained to act as an incentive for the job to be completed to your satisfaction. Finally, NEVER agree work without a written quote. Verbal contracts and quotations are of course legally binding, but trying to prove what was agreed weeks down the line is normally a nightmare. Of course, as always if you follow my advice, but still come unstuck and find yourself dealing with a cowboy, then remember you can always call my consumer programme on 01582 637450.

Jonathan Vernon-Smith not only offers you his consumer advice here but you can listen to The JVS Show tackling your consumer problems every weekday morning from 9am.

MP COLUMN

GOOD PEOPLE VOLUNTEERING

N

ow the nights are drawing in, I have had time to reflect on how much I have enjoyed the summer in NE Bedfordshire. I am hugely privileged to be invited to many events and occasions; cricket matches, summer fetes and fairs, sports events and charity walks and runs. All these events only happen because people just like you get involved in their community, and give their time and energy to planning and project managing some really complex events. I have had several conversations about the challenges of putting up marquees in the wind/rain/sun, and even more on how keeping the sponge cakes waspfree is a must! There is excellent time and effort going into all the classes at a show, beautiful flowers, giant vegetables and wonderful crafts, and not to forget the judges. Village and town life revolve around such events and such volunteers. But it doesn’t stop with the change in the weather. Bedfordshire is known as a great place for volunteers – we have more per head than almost anywhere in the country. I was delighted to meet the Wheels in Motion team at Keysoe fair recently; based at www.bedsrcc. org.uk 01234 345558 – the staff and volunteers aim to provide a reliable, personal and friendly

10

transport service with adapted vehicles and a friendly team. If you know someone who needs to get out and about, do give them a call to ask for more information. I also have had regular contact with FACES Bedford, www.facesbedford.org 01234 270601, a family support team of volunteers and staff, working with families offering practical and emotional support for a range of issues and situations. Enormously practical work, and another vital service in our area. I could go on. I meet every week someone who is volunteering and someone who is running a support organisation. But there is always room for more. Volunteers I meet say they could not imagine life without it. So if you don’t currently give a little time to something in your area, why not give it a go? There are plenty of ways to find something that fits, and join the ranks of the Wheels in Motion team, or FACES Bedford volunteers, or any one of many you can think of. I look forward to seeing you manning a stall at a fair next summer! www.voluntaryworks.org www.do-it.org

Do I Need a Flu Jab?

M

ost of us know by now that certain groups of people should visit the GP for a flu jab: the elderly, diabetics, asthmatics etc. But pharmacists will tell you that even if you don’t fall into one of the categories above a flu jab is still a sensible precaution. But why would a healthy person request a flu vaccine? Well, seasonal flu is a deeply unpleasant illness. It generally requires a week or so off work to recover and can trigger other conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia. The average person with flu infects one or two other people through sneezing, coughing and touch. If you work with the general public, in a shop for example, you are more at risk of being exposed to the virus so you might consider a flu jab a worthwhile investment.

A business owner may consider the impact a week off sick would have on his business and opt to protect himself or herself for that reason. Children are much more likely to pick up and pass on bugs as they are in such close proximity to each other all day. For this reason teachers and parents might think it wise to have a jab. Unless you fall into one of the at-risk categories you will have to be vaccinated, but it’s inexpensive (generally under £15) and many pharmacists administer the vaccine on their premises so you won’t have to book an appointment with your GP or take time off work. Flu jabs are generally safe unless you have an allergy to eggs or have had a previous allergic reaction to a shot. So discuss protecting yourself with your pharmacist today. By Sarah Davey

Derma Naturellé is only one of a few locations offering this type of treatment, the demand for appointments have risen significantly due to the overall result this procedure can offer. Radio frequency waves or RF are used to heat up the deeper layers of the skin to encourage the production of new collagen. Treatment is carried out using a machine with a probe which the operator gently slides around the face delivering radio frequency energy into the skin giving noticeable result even after one Collagen Renew treatment. Results are often noticed by family and friends after a few treatments. The results are, and look, completely natural; and the treatments provide genuine long lasting effects at a cellular level – not just superficial muscle tightening. Skin looks smoother, fresher, firmer, and more lifted. Radio frequency is one of the safest, least invasive and yet most effective anti-aging treatment available to people of all skin colours. With age our collagen production decreases. By the time we reach our mid 40’s it is barely in production and due to the lack of collagen we notice our skin loses elasticity, sags and forms lines and wrinkles. Collagen Renew can stimulate your own natural collagen and tighten your elastin fibres to bring about long-lasting rejuvenation.

HISTORY

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BRITISH CINEMAS

O

n a recent trip to Kent, I visited a quaint little cinema in Westgate-on-Sea. Tucked between shops on the high street, you pass through its arched entrance into a dark foyer with an old fashioned counter where you buy tickets at yesterday’s prices. The Carlton brought back fond memories of my visits to the cinema as a child. Typically in the 1960s, several cinemas were located in town centres, each showing a different film. Multi screen cinemas had yet to be invented and 2 for 1 deals or cinema cards offering unlimited visits were a thing of the future! Visiting the cinema was a real treat, and I remember queuing to see favourites like Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Often, more than one film would be shown with an interval in between, when an usherette would wander down the aisle with a tray full of goodies and stand at the front while we queued to purchase ice cream or popcorn. There were no fixed start and end times for programmes. You turned up and left when you liked as the films were screened continuously throughout the day. At the close I remember standing quietly while the national anthem was played! The first British picture house was the Regent Street Cinema in Oxford Circus. It first screened footage in 1896, when 54 people paid a shilling to watch several silent, grainy, 40-second scenes

of ordinary life. The audience was astounded at footage of a train entering a station, believing it to be heading towards them! Early silent movies films were accompanied by live orchestras, but from the mid 1910s organists provided the musical score. Cinemas were ornate with balconies and staggered rows for easier viewing. Over time this evolved into the tiered, stadium style seating we have today. Thick, heavy curtains covered the screen, which were drawn back when the film was due to start. In 1927 The Jazz Singer was released. The first feature length film to include sound, it heralded the Golden Age of Hollywood with all-talking, all-singing movies. Going to the cinema became hugely popular, with newsreels, short comedy films, documentaries or cartoons being screened before the main feature film. Many classic cartoons like Loony Tunes and Mickey Mouse were created for this purpose. Cinema faced a decline during the 1980s when films became readily available on video. With this trend continuing, new innovations have been introduced to make visiting the cinema more attractive. Stereo sound, 3D films, luxury seating and live broadcasts of theatre productions are amongst them. Visiting the cinema today is very different from my experience as a child, and I can’t help wondering what it will be like in fifty years from now! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Straight Outta Compton I have very little interest in Rap or Hip Hop music so had no real inclination to see this. This would have been a major mistake as it is one of the most interesting and intriguing movies I have seen in a long time. It follows the formation of the group N.W.A. (featuring Dr. Dre. Ice Cube and Easy E) through the making of their first album ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and into the turmoil that followed them and their creation of Gangsta Rap, especially their very provocative lyrics. Looking at anything about this film you would assume, wrongly, that this would have a very specific target market. You would probably be right in that assumption, at least in respect of the audience it is attracting but it is so much more than what that expectation is. If you have any interest in the music business, any kind of music not just this genre, and/or the history of America in the late 20th century then this is a great movie. Even the running time of nearly 2 ½ hours doesn’t seem like too much, in fact you still end up feeling important bits were missed out. Simon White

The Brickhill Book Bug reviews… Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee Like me, many of you will have read and studied Harper Lee’s novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ at school, and maybe learned valuable life lessons along with the main character, six year old Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch. ‘Go Set a Watchman’ follows Jean Louise, now in her twenties, as she returns to her home town, only to discover that her father has become involved in a racist organisation. Although the story is set after ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, ‘Go Set a Watchman’ was actually written first and was an early attempt by Harper Lee’s to create the story and characters that would become so well known. Writing a novel is a huge undertaking so it shouldn’t surprise us that this first attempt is a bit sparse and clunky. The story only really comes alive when Jean Louise reminisces about her childhood and this is the core that would eventually lead to the whole story being told from the children’s point of view. Also noticeable is the complete absence of the famous Boo Radley, a character who had yet to be created at this point. Unfortunately it’s clear the novel was really never meant to be read in this form, but here and there you can see flashes of the great novel it would eventually become.

HISTORY

Village of the Dead

A

cross Bedfordshire, there are possibly hundreds of ‘ghost villages’. These are settlements that flourished throughout the days of the Saxon Kings and Viking raids, many recorded by the conquering Normans in the Domesday Book of 1086, only to be deserted in the late Fourteenth Century; never to be seen again. One such ghost is the village of Kinwick, near Sandy. Recorded in the Domesday Book as “Chenemonewiche “ which translates from the original Saxon name of “Cynemund Farm” and after many corruptions over the centuries to a last record showing Kymundewyk in about 1332, and a final ‘historical’ record of Kynwyke in about 1535, when presumably the village was already a distant memory. In 1086 it was recorded in Domesday as having a mill, three hides (enough land to feed a family), three virgates (a quarter of a hide) and six villagers. These would be heads of household, so with wives and children the total would actually be about 30 people. There was also a recorded watermill, suggesting location on a river. It is probable that along with many settlements, Kinwick would have been hit by the Black Death as it swept the country between 1348 and 1351, wiping out one third of the population with its agonising disease. If the village struggled through the plague with any population left, they would have been much in demand as a reduced population pushed the cost of labour to a premium, eventually resulting in the peasant’s revolt as the Crown put a limit on labour rates. At the same time, England was drawing on the

46

services of fighting age men to aid the struggling wars in France, not progressing too well for the English King at the time, but later to rally forth towards the great victory at Agincourt years later in 1415. Our little village of Kinwick, however, saw the last of its sons pack up his family’s goods and chattels, before kicking dust over the embers of a dying fire and moving on. The encroaching weeds moved in unchallenged, and the buildings decayed to nothing, until there was no evidence the place ever existed. The last record of all refers to a Kinwick Field, mentioned within the 1804 Enclosure Award for Sandy. Bedfordshire’s first County Archivist, George Fowler, mentioned Kinwick in the Fifth Bedfordshire Historical Records Society Volume in 1920, and considered the village had lain South-East of Sandy, between Sandy Warren (where the RSPB are located) and the village of Sutton. A Millhouse Fen and a Watermill Bridge show evidence of this area once having a mill, and the small river runs down to Sutton’s well-known ford where the packhorse bridge still stands. There is also a small farmer’s reservoir shown on the map. Was this built in the hollow of a long-forgotten mill pond? On a dark and breezy night can you catch the sound of harvest songs through the rustling trees? or catch a shadowy image of laughing children dancing round a maypole, bedecked with coloured ribbons? We often forget that many of our seemingly empty fields of wheat and barley, many times ploughed over, cover the tracks of our ancestors and their difficult lives, but without them, we too, would never have existed. GARDENING

TERRIFIC I TULIPS

f I could grow only one type of flower then it would have to be the tulip. Harbingers of warmer days, the choice available is mindblowing. There are frilly parrot tulips bearing fringed petals, sturdy fat-flowered types and graceful plants with lily-like blooms. They are also tremendously accommodating. You can plant them much later than daffodils and narcissi because they don’t need to start producing roots so early. In fact you can plant them from now until Christmas! My mother uses them as annuals and rips them up after flowering but I can’t bear to do that so I plant them deeply and leave them in the garden where they return happily year on year. If you want to use them as disposable bedding you only need to plant them about 10cm / 4 inches deep. If, like me, you treat them as old friends then plant them 23cm / 9 inches deep and they won’t disappoint you.

50

GARDENING

Pot Luck

Tulips are wonderful in containers. As a guide, a 25-30cm / 10-12 inch diameter pot will accommodate a dozen bulbs. For a larger 47.5cm / 19inch pot use 16 –18 bulbs. Cover the base with at least 5cm / 2inches of drainage material and 12cm / 5 inches of soil-less multi-purpose compost. Lay the bulbs in an inner and outer circle making sure that no bulb touches either another, or the outside of the pot. Fill the pot with compost to within 2.5cm / 1 inch of the rim. I finish pots off with strips of daisies or anemones planted around the edge in colours which complement the tulips. Water everything in but shelter the pot from heavy rain so it doesn’t become waterlogged and never water in frosty weather. I use water-retaining granules mixed in with the compost. These help to maintain soil moisture throughout the dormant season. Feed the daisies or anemones throughout

their flowering season in the Autumn and the Spring and you should be rewarded with a beautiful display sometime in April or May. I love to plant containers of tulips by my front door. I have a red door so choose something like Tulipa ‘Apeldoorn’ in yellow and red varieties underplanted with red daisies. If you have a blue or green door you might like to try Tulipa ‘Angelique’ (pale pink) underplanted with pink anemones. Or how about Tulipa ‘Bleu Aimable’ a brilliant purple/blue variety? GARDENING

A Time to Plant W inter is a good time to think about planting new trees in your garden. This can be to replace a tree lost or just to enhance your garden. A new tree can be a great asset to your property as long as the right selection is made and the correct care is taken of the tree during it s early years. Many trees have differing attributes to take into account. Flowering: Prunus Shirofugen – Flowering Cherry Makes a small tree with a rounded crown which is rather spreading, mature height 5-10 metres. Foliage is copper coloured when young which contrasts well with its large, double white flowers which finish pink. Bark Interest: Betula utilis Jacquemontii – Himalayan Birch Makes a medium sized tree with a mature height of 15-20metres. Bears oval, dark green leaves which turn golden yellow in autumn.

Berries: Sorbus aucuparia Joseph Rock-Mountain Ash Small tree with ascending branches, mature height 5-10metres. Bunches of small white flowers appear in spring and in autumn creamy yellow berries appear when the leaves turn a lovely red. Watering – Water regularly if the weather is dry, normally from April onwards throughout the growing season. A standard 12-14foot high tree needs at least 20litres of water on a weekly basis to encourage good establishment.

Mulching – Helps enormously, increases the availability of water & nutrients, and prevents the development of weed growth. Staking – Once established the trees stem will increase in girth, therefore an annual check must be made & the stake/strap adjusted as required. Feeding – Regular feeding with a balanced slow release, water soluble fertiliser to improve root and shoot growth. Improving the trees health and therefore improving resistance from pest and disease issues.

Its white bark is accentuated by lenticels lines and peels routinely each year. Autumn colour: Fraxinus angustifolia Raywood – Raywood Ash Medium sized tree with a dense, upright, oval and relatively compact habit. Mature height 1015 metres. Its dark green leaves turn a wine red in autumn.

Bedford Blues W

ith the Championship season in full swing and the Rugby World Cup reaching its climax, October is all about an appreciation of the odd shaped ball at Goldington Road… Oh, and beer!!! Following the huge success of the inaugural Bedford Blues Beer Festival in March and the Guest Ale Series – available to buy at each home match from the Eagle Bar – Goldington Road will open its gates once again to some of the finest beers around for another weekend of rugby and merriment. Rotherham Titans will be our guests on the pitch on Friday 16th October when the Second Bedford Blues Beer Festival will also kick off. While enjoying some top notch entertainment on the field, fans will also be able to sample some of the best tipples around with the bigger and better festival. The Blues will once again be teaming up with local brewer and sponsor Charles Wells to offer a mini festival of the greatest sport and the best beers including Bombardier Burning Gold, Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors, Charles Wells DNA and many more Bedford favourites. With the Blues in action on the Friday night, there will be plenty more action in the Blues Marquee over the weekend as the Rugby World Cup Quarter Finals will be broadcast on the large screens.

What more could Blues fans want? Blues Operations Manager Gareth Alred said: “It’s fair to say that rugby and a good pint go hand-inhand and following the huge success of the beer festival back in March it seemed only right to hold one in conjunction with the Rugby World Cup. “Games between Rotherham and Bedford are always enthralling affairs and it seems a great way to start a huge weekend of rugby. We had some great feedback from the festival earlier this year and we have used that to create an even better event!” Entry to the Friday night beer festival is included in the price of your Bedford Blues v Rotherham Titans match day or season ticket but there will be a small charge for a ‘Bedford Blues beer glass’. Whilst Saturday and Sunday will be free entry to all, we just ask you buy a glass and finish our beer. Tickets for the match are available online at www.theclubshop/bedfordblues with an online discount of £2 or you can buy your tickets from the gate on match day. The month ends with the Rugby World Cup Final on Saturday 31st October and you are invited to come and enjoy the tournament finale at Goldington Road when the bars will be open at 3pm and the match kicking off on the big screens at 4pm.

Bedford Town FC T

he Eagles have continued their new life, as mentioned in last month’s Beds Local, with mixed fortunes. After a positive start with 4 points from the opening two games, Bedford suffered their first defeat with a 2:1 result at Godalming Town. Preparations for this fixture were hampered by horrendous traffic on the M25 (standard for a Saturday in August), resulting in the team arriving at the ground at 2:45pm. Nevertheless, Dan Kennoy’s boys soon got into the rhythm of playing and took the lead when Joel Norris scored. However, the effects of the afternoon took their tool and poor preparation resulted in two silly goals giving the hosts the win. In the week that followed, the Eagles faced two home games against local rivals Arlesey Town and Barton Rovers. Josh Bamford scored the only goal in a nervy but solid 1:0 victory against Arlesey, before the Eagles repeated the score line at home to Rovers four days later. On a scorching afternoon on and off the pitch, Dan Kennoy (former Barton manager), got his bagging rights over Lee Bearman (former Bedford manager) when some excellent play resulted in a tap in for Joel Norris to send the crowd into jubilation in the 87th minute.

come back into the game with the final score at 2:1. August finished in disappointment when Bedford succumbed to a 2:0 defeat at AFC Rushden and Diamonds, which could have been a number more on a wet Bank Holiday Monday. Following the result, the Eagles had an approach from Cambridge City for star striker Joel Norris, who accepted a move to the Southern League Premier side. In October, the Eagles have home games against Petersfield Town on 10th October and Uxbridge on 24th October. The club are also hosting a Murder Mystery dinner on Friday 13th November. Tickets are available via james. smiles@bedfordeagles.net

Saturday 29th August was FA Cup time, with the visitors to the Eyrie being Thrapston Town. Despite being a couple of leagues lower, the visitors gave a good account of themselves and despite being 2:0 down within 14 minutes when Joel Norris scored a double, they did well to To advertise please call 07827 015170 or email christa@bedslocalmag.co.uk
