COUNCILNEWS

COUNCIL NEWS Unanimous Vote Decides On Two-Tier System For Bedford Borough Schools

T

he Executive Committee of Bedford Borough Council has decided unanimously that schools across the Borough will now move to a two-tier system. The decision follows extensive work alongside schools and a public consultation which revealed strong support for the change. The Borough Council will provide strategic leadership and support to ensure a coherent, coordinated transition in the interests of all local children. The Council will also work with partners to supplement the funding where necessary to bring about this comprehensive change to the local schools system. Cllr Henry Vann, Portfolio Holder for Education at Bedford Borough Council, said: “The consultation demonstrated support for this decision and we will continue to work closely with schools and parents to keep everyone informed as the changes happen. I am confident that the change will deliver the best results for young people now, and in the future. 54 schools in Bedford Borough have expressed a wish to become either a Primary or Secondary

6

school and have undertaken a formal consultation to change their age range accordingly. This accounts for all Bedford Borough schools, apart from those who are already a Primary or Secondary and those within the Wootton Cluster. There are exciting times ahead for the school system in Bedford Borough. 92.9% of schools have been independently judged to be either Good or Outstanding (compared to 84% nationally) by Ofsted. The Borough Council is well placed to deliver the physical changes which will be required to schools. In June last year, Dr Peter Hansford, Government Chief Construction Adviser, visited schools in Bedford Borough and announced that Bedford was 'best in class' for its construction programme which has seen the removal of temporary classrooms and the construction of three new primary schools. Bedford Borough Council has already invested heavily to ensure the creation of excellent classrooms and the creation of 3,000 new pupil places.

New Future For Former School Site

A

n empty building and former school fields could be transformed under plans which would see the creation of a new public open space alongside homes and care facilities for the elderly. The former Putnoe Lower School site, in Overdale, has been empty since 2011 when the school relocated. As required by law, the council had to seek consent from the government for the sale of the site for alternative uses, and this was granted for the area to be sold in March 2015. The plans propose bringing the land back into use and generating funds for education and sport in the area. The Council has been working with McCarthy and Stone, which is seeking planning approval to build new 33 homes for the elderly and 56 extra care units. Work is ongoing to seek to complete the sale of the land for this scheme to McCarthy and Stone, which was the highest bidder for the site.

Bedford Town Centre visitor boost

B

edford town centre once again bucked the national trend with 2015 seeing a 2 percent increase in town centre footfall.

The figures are taken from official statistics (Springboard) collected across the country. In contrast to national and regional figures for High Streets, which saw footfall numbers fall by 2 percent, Bedford’s increase shows that people are choosing the town centre and supporting their local shops and businesses. 2015 was a bumper year with many new, quality independent businesses also choosing Bedford as their home including Seventh Heaven, Gallones , Animal Gallery, Herd, Lost & Found, Smoke Shack, George James Bridal boutique, Pride Kitchens, Épanoui, Délices, GCH Fishmongers, Rogans Books to name a few. Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson: “Bedford is clearly bucking the national trend, with another significant rise in footfall following on from increases last year. These figures show that more people are choosing to visit and enjoy Bedford town centre even at a time when footfall is declining elsewhere around the country.” “With extended free parking available in our car parks and a vibrant mix of independent shops, wellknown chain stores, cafes and restaurants, Bedford really does have something for everyone.” 2015 saw the opening of the new bus station and the completion of major regeneration of that area. This year we are seeing huge progress with the new Riverside development. With its mix of restaurants, new public space, and the return of town centre cinema, this promises to help Bedford continue to buck the trend.”

A Drop of the Black Stuff M

arch 17th is St Patrick's Day – a celebration of all things Irish – and people around Ireland and throughout the world will commemorate it with a pint or two of Guinness, Ireland's unofficial national intoxicant, with more than a 25% share of the beer market.

brand. Sales soared from 350,000 barrels in 1868 to over a million eighteen years later. However, by the 1970s sales were in decline and the company decided to make Guinness Extra Stout 'more drinkable', resulting in a brand re-launch in 1981 with pale malt being used for the first time.

Arthur Guinness founded the brewery that makes the famous drink. Born in 1725 in County Kildare, Arthur inherited £100 at the age of 27 from his godfather, and three years later he set up business as a brewer. In 1759 he signed a 9,000 year lease on a disused brewery in St James Gate, Dublin where he began brewing porter and ale.

Contemporary Guinness Draught and Extra Light Stout are weaker than their 19th Century counterpart, with Foreign Extra Stout and Special Export being closer to the original in character. Modern Guinness has a burnt flavour and is famous for its smoothness and thick, creamy head.

Porter is a dark, well-hopped beer made from brown malt. Its history is closely intertwined with that of stout, a term which originally referred to a beer's strength but which now refers to the drink's body and colour. Today's Guinness is a dry stout available in a number of variants and strengths, including Guinness Draught, Guinness Original/Extra Stout, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Guinness Special Export Stout and Guinness Bitter. It is nicknamed 'the black stuff' on account of its dark colour, although it is actually a very dark shade of ruby! Now brewed in 60 countries and available in over 120, the first Guinness export was to England in 1769, and by 1824 it had become a worldwide

8

The production of Guinness continues to change with the times. In November last year the company announced plans to make their beer suitable for vegetarians and vegans by the end of 2016, through the introduction of a new filtration process that will avoid the need to use isinglass from fish bladders. Claims have been made in the past that Guinness can benefit the heart by helping to prevent harmful deposit build-up on artery walls. It has also been described as a 'meal in a glass', and at 198 calories per pint, has slightly fewer calories than skimmed milk, orange juice and most other light beers. So, I wish you a happy St Patrick's Day, filled with friends, fun, smiles and a drop of the black stuff. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

MP COLUMN

Strategy and Consultations – what is the role of an MP? region and resulting from additional capacity. And most importantly from a local perspective, to understand how options impact on the local and regional economy. This is one of those paragraphs that you feel should end with ‘No pressure then?’

W

hen the larger strategic decisions are being made in our region, and in NE Bedfordshire in particular, I have to work out what my role is on each occasion, how I can engage as many people as possible, and how we all have an opportunity to put our views. Currently the A1 East of England Strategy Study is under discussion. The objectives are to understand the strategic case for making improvements to the A1, to review previous study work, other relevant data, and current investment plans . To identify the options for improving the A1, understand the operational and technical feasibility, and user benefits and challenges, of the different options. To look at benefits and impacts resulting from improving access to the strategic corridor in the

10

So how is this done? The Department of Transport has been evidence gathering, seeking views from key groups, stakeholders and, local Authorities, and looking at how this fits with wider national strategy for road improvements and planning. Locally I have started a series of stakeholder meetings. Small groups – starting with our Parish and Town Councils – to discuss with the DfT team leading this study, to talk through what they know so far, how their current thinking might impact on our local villages and communities and what is the best we can do for our whole area, NE Beds and beyond, to make for safer, better roads, good transport links, and the protection of parts of our environment that are very important to us. I am working with my colleagues, both elected members and officials, on the local Authorities, to aid all these discussions. So what’s my role? Well it’s a mediator, it’s a chairman, it’s a facilitator, and a decision maker. I take my role in this very seriously, I want to have as many views as I can on this study and plan, as well as others that come up. So do let me know what you think. My office can always help with links to studies and information, so do get in touch. www.alistair-burt.co.uk alistair.burt.mp@ parliament.uk Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP, NE Bedfordshire

FOOD AND DRINK

Succulent apricot and cumin pork shoulder There are few traditions I love more than a meltingly soft, slow-cooked roast. Whether it’s a shoulder of lamb, slathered with olive oil and its skin pierced with garlic and rosemary or a shoulder of pork, simply seasoned and covered with foil, and left to fall off the bone for 3 hours in the oven. Pork shoulder lends itself particularly well to slow roasting, its natural fattiness ensuring that the meat stays moist. It also means that pork shoulder is almost foolproof to cook and impossible to mess up. Plus pork remains good value from butchers and supermarkets alike – and there are always leftovers to take into the rest of the week too. My Weekend Kitchen programme on BBC Three Counties Radio features recipes every week which pull together all these key elements – very tasty food, easily cooked and suitable for tight budgets. This lovely take on a pork roast was created by one of our regular guests, Theo Michaels, who you may well have seen on Masterchef in 2014. He stuffs his pork shoulder with a fruity sweet filling which makes the roast extremely moreish.

Hear Nick Coffer’s Weekend Kitchen every Sunday morning on BBC Three Counties radio at 11am. You can also join Nick every weekday afternoon at midday for brilliant local guests with great stories to tell and all the music you want for your early afternoon.

Serves 4 – 6

1 kilo pork shoulder, de-boned 1 large onion, thinly sliced Several cloves of garlic, still in their skin Stuffing: 2 ripe apricots, chopped 5 dried apricots, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped Large pinch of rosemary leaves, chopped 4 sage leaves Salt and pepper Glaze: A squeeze of lemon A pinch of ground cumin Olive oil 4 tbsp apricot jam A squeeze of honey Cornflour, for the sauce Method: Pop the sliced onion and garlic cloves into a roasting tin. Unroll your deboned pork shoulder. Mix up the stuffing ingredients and layer the mixture on to the pork. Roll the pork back up together and tie it up with some string. Lay the pork, cut side down, in a roasting tin and add 125ml of water. Cover it tightly and roast at 170C/ 150C fan/ just below gas mark 4. Roast it for around 2 1/2 hours. It will be ready when the meat is meltingly soft. Take it out of the oven and leave it rest on a board for 20 minutes. While it’s resting, sieve the juices from the pan, pop them on the hob, bring them to a simmer then add a little cornflour. Keep stirring well and leave the sauce cook and thicken. Mix together the glaze ingredients, pour them over the rested pork then pop it back in a hot oven (230C/ 200C fan/ Gas Mark 8) for 10 minutes to crisp up and go golden. Serve with roast potatoes, your favourite vegetables, the cloves of garlic from the pan and the lovely gravy.

TECHNOLOGY

The Addictive Fitbit W

ant to make sure you’re completing your 10,000 steps a day, or looking to improve your training? An activity tracker can help. The FitBit is probably the best known brand on the market, with several models to choose from: The entry level Zip, at around £50, tracks your steps, distance walked and calories burned. “So it’s a fancy pedometer then?” I hear you ask. Well, yes, basically, but it’s more responsive and you can sync it to your computer or smartphone to see your activity presented as a graph. This makes it much easier to monitor your activity levels over time and track you progress. The Zip also acts as a watch, and there are various other extras, such as the ability to log your food intake. Feel like you’re getting your full eight hours of sleep, but still feel tired? You might want to opt for One or Flex, which track your sleep as well as your activity. They also have silent alarms, to wake you up, but not your partner. One clips onto your clothing, while Flex is worn like a watch. There are some differences in what they offer – Flex doesn’t have a clock, for example. Charge is similar to Flex, in that you wear it like a watch, but it comes with some added extras, such as a clock. If your phone is nearby and it rings, the caller ID will come up on the Charge display. It

24

also has a better battery life, of up to 10 days. Charge HR is designed for people who work out regularly, as it can recognise different exercises, and has an automatic heart-rate monitor to help maximise your training. Top of the range is Surge, at around £200. It’s been designed for people who are really serious about their sports performance, and want to monitor every aspect of their training. For instance, you can track the route you’re running using GPS. You can also control music and read texts that come through to your smartphone. So which one to go for? Well Zip is a great choice if you just want to check whether you’re walking those recommended 10,000 steps a day. If you cycle, run, or enjoy another sport, you’ll want to opt for a more advanced model. Now, a warning… It is possible to get ever so slightly obsessed with the FitBit. You can easily find yourself checking it hundreds of times a day, which can distract you from real life, and you can find yourself pushing ever harder, unnecessarily. On the positive side, it does encourage you to increase your activity levels and build up your fitness. Like so much in life, the key is moderation. Tempted? Head to: www.fitbit.com By Kate Duggan

TECHNOLOGY

50 years on and still top of their game

M

ichael R Peters the award-winning electrical retailer in the Broadway, is celebrating 50 years of trading this year.

1966 was a great year for England when we won the world cup and, by coincidence one of the most influential players was named Peters. The year 1966 was made even more memorable for Bedford when Mike and Mary Peters opened their business, Michael R Peters, selling black and white televisions, washing machines, cleaners, radiograms, radios, small appliances and other electrical accessories. The business recognizes that its continued success is a reflection of loyal customers who appreciate and trust the experienced staff and services. Michael R Peters supports many local organisations and charities and over the years have made significant efforts in raising funds for

some of the disasters in other parts of the world. As part of the anniversary activities in their 50th year they intend to raise as much money as possible for a local charity that affects all Bedfordians – our hospital. They are delighted to have teamed up with Felicity Scott – chairman of the charity Friends of Bedford Hospital – and intend to help raise funds for the charity through various activities throughout 2016. If you would like to support the Friends of Bedford Hospital and have a chance of winning a 50” smart TV for 50 pence, call into Michael R Peters between now and the 26th November. All money raised will go to the charity and the amount raised will be published at the time of the draw which will take place on the 28th November – the anniversary of the day when Mike and Mary opened the shop back in 1966. Call into Michael R Peters between now and the 26th November and buy a ticket.

The BedPop Science Lab – 12th March 2016

O

n Saturday 12th March, the BedPop Science Lab will take over Bedford Central Library and the Higgins, bringing dozens of free STEM workshops, activities, demonstrations and challenges to the heart of Bedford as part of British Science Week. From circuit building to Lego Robot Wars, engineering challenges to 3D design, we’ve got loads of activities to encourage visitors of all ages to discover their inner scientist. Come along to Bedford Library and join the structural engineering challenge. How tall can you build a free-standing structure using just 20 sheets of A4 paper and one metre of tape? Or take part in our 3D drawing workshop with the Circus of Illustration. Why not head to the Higgins to watch science experiments in action or take part in a drone programming and flying workshop. A full programme of events will be published in February, so there’s still time to get involved. The BedPop Science Lab takes place during Access Week and we will be offering as many events as possible that will be accessible to all. We are working with the composer Roger Illingworth and the Bedford Alchemists’ Choir who have received Arts Council funding to create

36

a piece of music based on the periodic table of elements. By working closely with Access Bedford, the choir will incorporate sign language into their performance. The final piece promises to be spectacular! Hearing Dogs for Deaf People will be on hand to demonstrate their super powers and their human companions will be running sign language activities for deaf and hearing visitors. BedPop Science Lab supporters include UTC Colworth, British Science Week, You Can Book Me, Bedford Borough Council, Arts Council England, Charles Wells, Polam School, Pinchmill Lower School, Narrative Industries, Royal Society of Chemistry, Access Bedford, Bedford Community Arts Choir, Down To Earth Electrical, Network Rail, Bedford Modern School, Beauchamp Middle School, Mark Rutherford Upper School, UoB, HG Education, Above View Ltd, We Can Creative and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES A

s I started to write an article for the March issue of Beds Local earlier this month, I got sidetracked as I often do and ended up reading about one of my favourite authors, Douglas Adams, creator of the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. Had he still been with us, he would have been enjoying his 63rd Birthday this month. Alas, it has been 15 years since his passing and I still miss his humour, intelligence and insight. I have Douglas Adams to thank for many an involuntary burst of laughter in environments such as railway carriages and airports. People are so keen to write and text LOL to each other, but here was a guy who really made you laugh out loud in public spaces. So having digressed completely from my original subject (that I will return to next month) I remembered that he originally identified the Law of Unintended Consequences.

40

Please mention BedsLocal when responding to adverts | www.bedslocalmag.co.uk

Perhaps the clearest example of this Law in action is the dawn of the personal computer. This was a completely unforeseen bi-product of the NASA space programme, but has had a greater impact on humankind than man walking on the moon ever did. The Internet is also a great example of this Law. It was originally conceived by the US military to protect communication in the event of nuclear war. The wholly unintended irony is that it is now one of the greatest threats to US national security. Another classic example was the development of the mobile telephone, intended to make communication possible whilst on the move and out of range of the normal telephone system, but today the networks carry about 50% more SMS “text” messages than telephone calls, and as for photos and video clips whizzing around the ether, it would certainly have shocked the life out of telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell!

Even here in Bedfordshire, we have the great sheds originally built to house the mighty airships of the early Twentieth Century, keeping them safe from the elements. Although the industry was tragically brought to an end by the airship’s vulnerability to fire; it has been the study of fire and its effects on various building and materials that has been the salvation from ruin of one of the sheds. Where else can you build a five story block, indoors, and then destroy it with a fully filmed and recorded conflagration? Another piece of Douglas Adams’ wisdom which kind of applies to business, or whilst being distracted from your work; If you are lost when you are driving, just follow the car in front as they will know where they are going. International Women's Day Wendie Lovatt is the CEO of a local charity called FACES (Family and Children’s Earlyhelp Services). She is a mother of two and a grandmother of three. Wendie has worked as a senior manager in the voluntary sector for the last 17 years and her passion is establishing and being part of services ‘for the community, by the community’.

Sue Bedford is a mother of four and grandmother of two and manages to juggle running a busy health screening business around her family. Sue has over 25 years of nursing experience within the NHS and private sector and has specialised in health screening since 2002. After completing further training in health promotion and nutrition, Sue set up Pulse Health Screening, providing a variety of health checks and medical tests, from top UK and US laboratories, to individuals and companies.

FACES train parent volunteers to support families and their children who are facing a range of difficulties such as domestic abuse, physical or emotional ill health, disadvantage and poverty etc. Wendie said “I came to work for this charity as I could really connect with some of the issues that our families have to face on a daily basis. For much of my own children’s lives I was on a low income, trying to juggle bills and trying to be a good mum. I wanted to get out of the situation I was in so I went to college to gain qualifications, it was tough but it was worth it”.

With more people wanting to take charge of their health, today, Sue’s services have become very popular. She is also in demand from people with a range of health issues, who want to find what the cause may be, when conventional tests have drawn a blank. Should an abnormality be identified, Sue provides the results for their GP, and offers diet and lifestyle advice to help support the body. In addition to health screening, Sue also gives health promotion talks on a variety of health issues, locally.

Wendie has led the charity through many changes and one of their proudest moments was winning the Bedfordshire Excellence in Business Awards 2014.

M L I F REVIEW Pride and Prejudice and Zombies The mixing up of the classical romance of Jane Austen and the modern day phenomenon that is Zombies doesn’t seem like an automatically obvious choice for combining, but the book, by Seth Grahame-Smith & Jane Austen and released in 2009, was a massive bestseller so a film was pretty much guaranteed. Who could resist the premise of such a film? This is a real fun film, surprisingly it uses a lot of Austen’s dialogue and is pretty much her story with a zombie uprising and how it has affected England woven around it. If you know the original, and I only have a basic understanding of the book, you can hear lots of the original words being spoken. The writing is really very clever, the plot is kind of crazy but the social satire and romance of Austen is still in there and will probably appease any Austen fans who dread this film. Yes it does play with her tale but the Zombies are pretty much a crux to hang some action into the storyline and the real heart of the romance is still there. I really enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would and would suggest you all go and see it! Simon White

Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter This is a small book about a big subject. A woman has died suddenly, leaving behind a husband and two young sons. Alone together in their flat, they are bereft and adrift, at a loss for what to do next. Then Crow appears at the door.

The Brickhill Book Bug reviews…

13/08/2015

Crow is a character created by Ted Hughes, a poet who knew a great deal about love and loss. The father in the book is a Hughes scholar and Crow makes it clear that he has come to help them deal with their grief. A bundle of filth and feathers, at turns foul mouthed and caring, he says he will stay for as long as he is needed. 09:24 This is an odd book. Part novella, part poem, part play, but definitely fiction and readers will be happy to know that Porter’s wife is very much alive. He did, however, loose his father when he was six years old and it is often in the reactions of the boys that it feels like there is the most truth. I was surprisingly moved by this short exploration of grief. It doesn’t take long to read, but it introduces a very different way of telling a story.

GARDENING

Lovely Lilies (and a spot of hard-pruning)

T

he first day of spring this year is officially March 20th . Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past. Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade.

50

If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems. Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore. Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead.

Please mention BedsLocal when responding to adverts | www.bedslocalmag.co.uk

GARDENING I have one word for you...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony. There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over. Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost.

Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am. By Rachel Leverton

Lightning Protection of Trees

Every year lightning strikes damage assets that add beauty and value to your landscape—trees. Trees often act as natural conductors for lightning strikes. The good news is that there are options available to protect your trees and property* from lightning damage. A tree lightning protection system from Bartlett Tree Experts can minimize the risk of lightning strike damage. You may need lightning protection if you have: • Trees that are within 3 metres of buildings and higher than the roof line. • Tall trees in relatively open areas like parks, golf courses, cemeteries, lawns and recreation areas. • High value, memorial or historic trees.

• Trees that are known to be susceptible to lightning strikes: ash, catalpa, elm, hemlock, maple, oak, pine, spruce and tulip tree. • Wires, fences, pumps, and pipes that can conduct an electrical charge that are close to a tree.

Damage caused by lightning strikes:

• Split or shattered trunk or branches. • Bark missing entirely around the trunk of the tree. • A line of missing bark either running the entire height of the tree or part of the way down the tree. There may be a deeper groove into the wood of the tree in the centre of the line. • Soil or pavement that is blown out either above or underneath a tree root. • Complete failure of the entire tree and full loss of the amenity of the tree. A lightning Conductor can be installed into the canopy to protect the tree from damage and divert any charge to a safe earth.

Bedford Blues

SPORT

When you think of March you may think of Mother’s Day, Daffodils and Easter, but for Bedford Blues, they will be thinking of silverware.

Finally, the Club would like to say a huge thank you to the Friends of the Blues for their latest donation of £20,000 which was handed over by organiser Howard Travis to Chairman Geoff Irvine at half-time during the Blues stonking 64-20 win over London Welsh last month.

With the Greene King IPA Championship entering the final furlong, the Blues will also be looking ahead to a British & Irish Cup quarter final against Jersey at Goldington Road on Friday 11th March.

The amount represents a continuation of funds raised and paid to the club over the last four years by the FoB Trust to support Bedford Blues.

Bedford topped Pool 2 of the competition to secure a home quarter-final and everyone at Goldington Road will be hoping the players can see off tough competition from across the English Channel to move into the semi-final where they would face either Yorkshire Carnegie or Moseley away from home. The final would then take place at the home ground of whoever wins this semi-final. With the game being under the Friday Night Lights with a 7.45pm kick-off, fans are being urged to buy their tickets early and take advantage of the discounted offer. Just visit www.bedfordrugby.co.uk to book your place. March will also see the Six Nations coming to its climax and what better place to watch Grand Slam Saturday than Goldington Road! On Saturday 19th March, you can watch the three final Six Nations games – Wales v Italy, Ireland v Scotland and the concluding fixture of France v England – on the big screen TV in the Scrum Hall. To add to the occasion, Nos’s Nosh will be open and serving up wholesome Six Nations themed fayre throughout the day with food and drink deals available.

Irvine said: "We are delighted to receive another substantial contribution from The Friends of the Blues and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone has, and who continues to, contribute to the wellbeing of the Blues through this supporters trust.” Members donating funds are entered into a series of draws and have won many prizes ranging from meals at top local restaurants, flights and holidays. Five members at each home game have a chance of winning an annual prize of £1,000 by selecting a player who will score a try for Bedford. Additionally all members are invited to an end of season Soiree with the Players. A night full of fun and frolics with a number of prizes to be won with unique access to the players. Membership starts at £7 per month through to as much as you wish and your chances in the fantastic draws increase pro-rata. If you wish to join contact Howard on hbt56@hotmail.co.uk or visit www. bedfordrugby.co.uk/content/friends-blues. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

SPORT

Bedford Town FC T

he New Year hasn’t been kind to the Eagles, results wise. The last three games in January gleaned just one point. The side were beaten 3-1 away at Kings Langley, before dominating at St. Ives, only to see former Eagle, Andrew Phillips, score for the Cambridgeshire side, as Bedford lost 1-0. The last game of January saw Hanwell visit the Eyrie, holding Bedford to a 1-1 draw. Tragic events last year at North Greenford United, when fan, David Barnes lost his life, prompting the abandonment of the match. The rearranged game was played on Tuesday 2nd Feb, with free entry to the game. A voluntary collection was made, and the travelling Bedford fans contributed with the North Greenford support to raise £280 towards David’s favourite charities. On the pitch, North Greenford won 3-1. Bedford’s latest game ended in a 3-0 defeat at home to Godalming Town, in a game best forgotten. The Eagles only have two home games in March: Potters Bar Town on Sat 12th and Easter Monday (28th) against St. Ives Town. Friday 18th March is the Supporters Club Quiz Night. You can ring Gerry Edmunds on 01234 381213 for further information.

Ten years and a lot of hard work later, Bedford dipped their toe in the waters of FA Cup glory with a 1st round tie at home to Peterborough United, in front of the Match Of The Day cameras. Today, the Eagles’ Eyrie is a couple of miles outside the town, in a small but tidy ground, packed with great facilities, and the side play in the Evo-Stik Southern Football League. For the latest information, including up to date fixtures, try www.bedfordeagles.net

Bedford was once portrayed as the biggest town in England without a football league team. Well, a lot of research will have to go into that claim, but one thing is for certain. The history of Bedford Town FC is a proud one. Formed in 1908, The Eagles, as they are affectionately known, had a relatively quiet start to life, to become one of the most respected sides in Non League; just ask Arsenal, Everton, Newcastle United and Norwich City about the exploits of Bedford Town in the FA Cup. Forced to disband in 1982, the Eagles came back 8 years later when a band of passionate supporters finally succeeded in bringing back Bedford Town FC.
