COUNCILNEWS

COUNCIL NEWS Bedford Celebrates Royal Charter Anniversary

B

edford is gearing up for a special anniversary next year marking 850 years since King Henry II signed the Royal Charter granting new rights and powers to local people.

One of the lasting legacies of Henry II’s reign was the creation of about 150 chartered boroughs throughout the country. The Charter provided certain liberties and independence for Bedford in exchange for annual taxes. Bedford’s Charter is believed to be the second oldest and as part of the celebrations it is hoped a range of exhibitions and events will give people a flavour of life back in 1166 and the 850 years following. Highlights already announced include an 850 trail at The Higgins Bedford, a twelfth century village at Bedford River Festival and a special play ‘Somewhere in England’ (The Bedford Play) about the history of Bedford commissioned by The Harpur Trust. More details of events taking place will emerge throughout 2016.

6

Groups and organisations are also invited to get in on the anniversary spirit and can use a special 850th logo that has been introduced to celebrate the year. The logo resembles a medieval stamp and can be downloaded from the Council’s website. Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson said: “Bedford has one of the oldest Royal Charters in the country, and I hope people agree that this anniversary really is something to celebrate. The charter is a proud feature of Bedford’s rich history. It granted the people of Bedford special rights and powers which helped to create and to shape the borough we know today.” 850 years on from the signing, 2016 marks a significant date in our history. A range of exciting events and activities are being planned throughout the year to mark the 850 anniversary and I invite everyone to join the celebrations.

NEW EXHIBITION: Bawden By The Sea Saturday 13 February 2016 – Sunday 29 January 2017 Free Entry Edward Bawden’s nostalgic and whimsical depictions of Britain’s seaside towns are the subject of the latest exhibition in the Edward Bawden gallery at The Higgins Bedford. From bathing beauties in Bexhill-on-Sea to children’s sand castles on Clacton Beach, Bawden’s love of the seaside is demonstrated in his prints

and advertising material. He treats the sea’s inhabitants with equal glee, scattering murderous mermaids, man-sized lobsters and parceldelivering fish in his commissions for Fortnum & Mason and Shell. Bawden by the Sea, opening on the 13th February, will be a chance to see all the preparatory works as well as the blocks and final prints, offering a rare and fascinating insight into Bawden’s working practices.

CONSUMER

For Goodness Sake – PAY BY CREDIT CARD!

I

’ve been fighting for consumer rights on my radio programme for many years now, and there’s one message I have been repeating constantly – PAY BY CREDIT CARD! Whenever I repeat this mantra, I receive so many calls and emails of complaint from people saying that I’m encouraging debt, I lose the will to live. However, I simply refuse to be silenced. But why do I get on my high horse? I’ll tell you why. If you pay for goods or services by credit card you are protected in so many ways. The woman who paid £1,000 by cheque for a bed that never turned up because the company went bust, the young man who put down a £500 deposit in cash for a new car only to find the dealer had misrepresented the kind of vehicle it was. These consumers could have received all of their money back with one phone call if only they’d paid by credit card. You see under the Consumer credit act of 1974, the credit card company is equally liable for “for any breach of contract

or misrepresentation by a supplier of goods or services on credit”. As long as the product or service costs between £100 and £30,000, you are covered for most unfortunate events. There’s also absolutely no need to get into debt when paying by credit card. If you were proposing to pay by cheque, cash or debit card then simply pay by credit card instead and pay the bill off in full the very next day. So next time you plan to buy that new sofa, car, holiday or conservatory, FOR GOODNESS SAKE – PAY BY CREDIT CARD!

Jonathan Vernon-Smith not only offers you his consumer advice here but you can listen to The JVS Show tackling your consumer problems every weekday morning from 9am.

MP COLUMN

David Bowie T

My generation (born 1955) has grown up with media, and particularly music, dominating in a manner unknown before. Whilst radio from the 1920's brought music and culture to a mass audience, the expansion of media outlets for music over the past fifty years, and it's all pervading nature, is unprecedented. And for a very small handful of incredibly creative individuals, their influence on society has gone way beyond their own sphere. When Glenn Miller left Thurleigh airfield in 1944 on his ill-fated journey across the Channel, he had changed popular music through a style which would forever be associated with him, but his influence was largely limited to his profession. When the hugely popular Tommy Cooper and Eric Morecombe died sadly young, they were mourned and missed for their entertainment contribution, but would never have claimed to have influenced society more widely. David Bowies influence emerged at a time when society was beginning to be shaped more by peer relationships than by an increasingly challenged authority from the top. What a pop star or actor said on controversial topics brought more column inches than what a politician or the Archbishop of Canterbury might say, for better or worse! But above all it seems to me, David Bowie's determination to be himself, independent and creative in musical style, changing, fluid in dress and character, seemed to give many people the same courage to be different and express themselves.

10

Adam-Bielawski

he death of David Bowie, and the way in which it dominated news broadcasts and the newspapers for some days, caused me to think about the impact of modern culture in terms of its influence on society, and indeed, politics.

This growing sense of confidence perfectly both led and matched a political current in which our notions of equality and individualism were changing. Instead of wondering why people could not just ‘fit in’ with the rest, we began to realise that being different to the majority was just as real and valid an experience of life as anything else, one to be valued and, if discriminated against consciously or unconsciously, defended. He wasn’t a political figure – many other stars have been more heavily engaged in political movements, not always making much sense or being effective. Perhaps again that says something more about him, that quietly, as one commentator wrote, ‘he was just there, in the corner of our eye, all the time as our lives changed’, and what he sang or did just prompted thought or chimed with change. In an age when politicians struggle to be anything more than run of the mill, it seems to me that we could all learn a bit from how David Bowie conveyed the messages he wanted to deliver, through being courageous professionally, authentic and himself. And he wrote great songs and words too!

Get So Much More From Your Conservatory...

year Insura nce backed warr anty

Conservatories look great and can be a lovely place to sit and relax, unfortunately the British climate often means they are either too cold or far too hot to sit comfortably. They can be expensive to heat and hard to cool down. So many people would love to make more of their conservatory. If you are one of those people then read on because Nu-Look Conservatory Roof Solutions can transform your conservatory into a fabulous space which you can use comfortably all year round. Their cost effective value for money solution is to replace the roof – it’s nowhere near as expensive as you might think and is nowhere near as big a job as you would expect.

By removing the noisy, energy inefficient roof that your conservatory currently has and replacing it with a lightweight treated bespoke timber frame, cladding it with durable slates or tiles that are 80% lighter than traditional ones, insulating it and finishing with a superb internal plaster finish, the whole of your conservatory will feel like a brand new room – fit for many purposes – a new play room, an office, garden room or a lovely room to entertain friends. The whole process usually takes between 3 to 5 days, comes with building control approval and a 10 year insurance backed warranty. With over 350 local customer re-roofed since 2013, all delighted with their NEW room it is really worth investigating the possibilities.

Call Nu-Look now and find out what the options are for your conservatory on 01234 964007

EDUCATION

RUTHERFORD REVIEW FABULOUS FAME! From the first week in September until opening night on December 8th, students and staff alike were hard at work rehearsing and perfecting the Mark Rutherford 2015 School Production, ‘Fame’! Involving students from Drama, Dance, Music and Art, the whole school production encompassed a wide variety of skills from acting, singing and dancing on stage, to designing, building and painting the set, providing lighting and sound production, performing live music as a member of the band, providing back stage and front of house support and many other smaller jobs which are vital in bringing together a production. The smiles, sharing of stories and new friendships are the legacy of a great project, the skills from which students will take back into their day to day routine and on in their future endeavours, hopefully also taking a little part of star quality with them in the knowledge that they have been involved in something great! Staff from the Performing Arts departments thank everyone who took part in and supported this year’s production.

ARKWRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS Omar Choudhry and Richard Lilley have been awarded sought-after Arkwright Engineering Scholarships. The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships support young people from across the UK who have the potential to be industry’s future leaders in engineering. During their Sixth Form studies, Scholars receive £600 to support their technical courses and have access to a range of exciting opportunities to learn more about engineering, such as mentoring and company visits. From a pool of 30,000 eligible students, this year teachers endorsed the applications of 1559 students: 397 Scholarships were eventually awarded. Dr Martin Thomas, Chief Executive of the Arkwright Scholarships Trust said: “I have been hugely impressed by the creativity, technical skills and leadership prowess of the young men and women receiving their Scholarships this year.”

VOICE OF YOUTH VICTORY For the fourth consecutive year, Mark Rutherford’s Sixth Form public speaking team has enjoyed success in the Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks Competition. The team of Lucia Hardisty, Nasreen D’Agostino and Matt Darby won the local heat and will now compete in the regional level of the prestigious competition on Friday 12th February 2016. Matt proposed the Vote of Thanks and Nasreen took the role of main speaker with a six minute presentation on how to tackle political disengagement in modern Britain.

C hinese N ew Year

Chinese New Year has been celebrated for thousands of years. No one knows exactly when the tradition first started, but it is believed to date from at least the Shang Dynasty (1766 BC – 1122 BC), although it may be much older.

The Chinese calendar is much older than the Gregorian one we use today, although it has evolved over time. It follows the lunar cycle, with each month beginning with the new moon. Chinese New Year falls between 21st January and 20th February on the Gregorian calendar. This year it will be celebrated on 8th February. Celebrations run from Chinese New Year’s Eve, to the Lantern Festival 15 days later. It is the Year of the Monkey, one of twelve animals associated with Chinese New Year. The others are rooster, dog, pig, rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse and sheep. The colour red is often associated with Chinese New Year. In Chinese folk lore there was once a beast called the Nian who roamed the land at the beginning of each year, terrorising villagers. Red was found to drive the Nian away, so red clothes were worn, and red lanterns and scrolls were hung. The tale goes that the Nian was eventually captured by a monk, but people have continued the traditions. Red packets containing money are also often given to younger people by married couples, to bring luck.

Food plays an important role in Chinese New Year. New Year’s Eve dinner is a day for families to gather together to celebrate at home. The type of food served depends on the country and region. Some of the most common food traditionally eaten on or around Chinese New Year include dumplings, fish and spring rolls. Many of the ingredients are chosen because their name is considered auspicious. For example, there is a vegetarian dish called Buddha’s Delight which is often eaten at this time of year. Fat choy is usually included in the dish, due to the last syllables of its name sounding similar to a Cantonese phrase for prosperity. The preparation and way of eating the dishes is also considered very important. Restaurants across the UK will often hang up decorations for Chinese New Year and hold their own celebrations, including special menus and entertainment. Many of the cities also host Chinese New Year celebrations and activities, from lantern making and martial arts demonstrations to parades and firework displays. The Chinese dragon has become an iconic part of Chinese New Year. Dragons are said to ward off evil, and bring prosperity and good luck. The dragon dance is performed by a group of dancers carrying a giant, moveable dragon. It is believed that the longer the dragon, the more good luck it can bestow, so some can reach over 70 metres! Girton College, Cambridge: The play tells the story of the Mistress of Girton College and her determination to win the female students the right to graduate. In doing so, they risked being branded a ‘blue stocking,’ a derogatory term for female intellectuals who were not granted degree status from Cambridge until 1948. This is a powerful account of the struggle for academic equality, with the female students enduring antiquated prejudice from their male counterparts and lecturers. Regardless the girls’ strength, determination and equal ability shines through. Touching, humorous and with the odd love interest too; this show is not to be missed. The show is suitable for ages 10+. All performances are at 7.30pm. Tickets at £9.50 & £8.00 from www.theplacebedford.org.uk or (01234) 354321

Outside Edge – A comedy by Richard Harris Wednesday 25-Saturday 28 May 2016, The Place Theatre, Bradgate Road, Bedford A hilarious combination of cricket & infidelity! Picture the scene: the neatly mowed village green, clear blue skies a cricket team in their perfectly pressed whites, tea and sandwiches waiting in the pavilion, loyal wives and girlfriends looking on. Sound perfect? Think again… there are storm clouds gathering, and not just in the sky! Watch the hilarious sparks begin to fly as the team foolishly try to solve their various marital problems at the same time as winning the game. Bob is having marriage troubles, so is Dennis. Maggie is embarrassing Kevin – and Alex’ new girlfriend is teetering on hysterics. At least Roger and Miriam have a perfect marriage… don’t they? Fairtrade Fortnight What did you have for breakfast this morning? Maybe you enjoyed coffee from Kenya , bananas from Colombia , cocoa from Côte d’Ivoire, tea from India, sugar from Malawi or juice from Brazilian oranges. Millions of farmers and workers in developing countries work hard every day to grow the food we take for granted, but ironically they don’t always earn enough to feed their own families. In other words, they do not have food security. Fairtrade is about changing that. Its aim is to secure better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. By being paid a fair price, they can have more control over their lives and less worry about how they will feed their families. Fairtrade means many farmers and workers are able to fulfil a basic human need – to put enough food on the table for the people they care about, all year round. When you buy products with the FAIRTRADE Mark, it means that the Fairtrade ingredients they contain have been produced by smallscale farmer organisations or plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards. These standards include protection of workers’ rights and the environment, payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in schools, transport, health care, sanitation, an improved environment and better business equipment and practices.

thousands of farmers, workers and their families. From 29 February until 13 March 2016 is Fairtrade Fortnight, during which ordinary people like you and me are encouraged to inspire a multitude of Fairtrade breakfasts in our communities – and wake others up to the challenges facing farmers and workers. There are three simple steps to get involved: • Organise your own Big Fairtrade Breakfast • Inspire others to host a breakfast (for example, in a school, workplace, town hall or individuals at home) • Register your breakfast on the Big Fairtrade Breakfast totaliser to make sure it gets counted. You can find everything you need at fairtrade.org. uk/breakfast. No one person can do everything to tackle the injustices that exist in the world, but harnessing the power of a Fairtrade breakfast is something we can all do. So, sit down for breakfast and stand up for farmers! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

There are over 4,500 Fairtrade products available in the UK: from coffee, tea and chocolate to beauty products, flowers and gold. One in three bananas bought is Fairtrade, and British consumers choosing Fairtrade sugar sent more than £5 million in Fairtrade premium back to sugar cane smallholders last year. Choosing to buy food with the FAIRTRADE Mark really does make a huge difference to

ROSES ARE RED… 40

A

s Christmas recedes back into memory and we all start to get back into the swing of the working days, we can now look forward to the next great ceremony and card selling opportunity – St Valentine’s Day. Actually, I do like St Valentine’s Day, even though it has been commercialised by the card and novelty gift industries, not to mention the countless restaurants who spend most of February trying to entice us in for a romantic dinner before actually admitting that they are fully booked on that night, but the concept of a day to honour the love between a couple is definitely a winner in the eyes of many. So where did it all come from? The main claim is that surrounding a clergyman by the name of Valentine at the time of the Roman Emperor Claudius II. The Emperor believed that single men made better soldiers as they wouldn’t be trying to fight with their heads clouded by wooly thoughts of women and romance, so he decided to simply make it illegal for young men to marry. As love will always find a way to flourish in such dire circumstances, Valentine decided to illegally arrange marriages for those wishing to get hitched and was promptly arrested, jailed and finally executed for his trouble. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius (presumably single, being a Pope, but full marks for this gift to the common man) decreed that the martyrdom of Saint Valentine would be honoured each year on February 14th and this, as we all know, is the date still used today. The concept of St Valentine’s Day as a time to celebrate the joy of romance seems to have come to the fore during the middle ages and the time of honourable knights and chivalry, and became written into the romantic tales and poetry of the times. St Valentine’s Day then appears in print more frequently throughout history, including works by Shakespeare such as Hamlet, and has been present ever since. Either way, it is the one day when couples can truly celebrate their love for each other. Even avoiding the modern commercial elements surrounding the day, it should definitely be a day, or at least an evening, spent with the one you love. There are about one billion greetings cards

exchanged for St Valentine’s Day, making it the biggest event for card manufacturers other than Christmas. Along with all the chocolates, roses and jewellery, there is a massive market for this celebration, but the main thing is to spend some valuable time with that special person in your life. Love is a priceless and wonderful thing that transcends all of the cards and gifts. In a longstanding relationship, although we may spend many precious and valuable moments together, it is still nice to have a dedicated and special day where we can simply be together and fully appreciate what we have. If you just spend the evening meal together at the dining table, rather than in front of the TV for this one night, it will often mean much more than anything you may achieve by going out. A meal out in a restaurant is all very nice, but not so romantic when you are squeezed between two other couples busily stuffing themselves with the full three courses, and all on the establishment’s busiest night of the month! It is possible to enjoy a romantic dinner for two on any other night of the year, but somehow there has been created an obligation to cram everybody in on the same night, and then to allow their private events to be gatecrashed by flower sellers, passing drunks, waiters and Mediterranean guitarists, etc., which probably isn’t quite the event that Pope Gelasius had envisaged. The very thought of such events would probably have caused the mean-minded Emperor Claudius II to have changed his mind and let Valentine off the hook in the first place. Don’t let me put you off though. As these events and memories need to be created before they can become embedded into the layers of your shared and cherished memories. Whatever you and your partner are doing on St Valentine’s Day this year, just do it together, as a couple, and make sure you have a wonderful time! M L I F REVIEW Star Wars – The Force Awakens Really and truly this review could just consist of three words... ‘It’s Star Wars’ and that would be enough. Just knowing it was coming out would be enough to make people already know whether they were going to see it or not. The Force Awakens has been one of the most anticipated movie releases in a long, long time and has had an awful lot of hype to live up to. Question is does it live up to it? A lot of fans remember the disappointment after the first viewing of the prequels. This time around though the Star Wars universe, and legend, is ably continued by JJ Abrams giving the viewers a mix of familiar set pieces while also providing an interesting array of new characters to get to love as well. This has everything a good action movie should have, great characters, dramatic moments, big fight scenes, some truly amazing special effects during the spaceship dogfights and a plot that is good enough to keep the story running. The only minor downside is that if you do love the original Star Wars then it is really easy to see the numerous number of plot similarities in this. It follows pretty much the same story as the original and that is a shame. Still it bodes really well for the rest of the trilogy and the spin off movies to come! Simon White

The Brickhill Book Bug reviews… In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume Fifteen-year-old Miri Ammerman is growing up in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in December 1951 when the first plane crashes. Until that moment Miri and her best friend Natalie Osner have nothing worse to worry about than the usual teenage preoccupations of school and boys, although in Miri’s case there is also the question of her absent father. After that day the town of Elizabeth will never be the same and when two further planes fall in the following months the young people begin to wonder if they are being deliberately targeted. Maybe it’s aliens? Or communists? Judy Blume has spent a lifetime writing about the dilemmas of American teenagers but this adult novel draws on her own experiences of growing up in Elizabeth in the early 1950s, where three planes really did crash within months of each other. As the residents of Elizabeth try to come to terms with their loss and fear, some lives begin to unravel and decisions are made for the future by people who fear they might not have one.

The Language Of Flowers It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and millions will be rushing out to buy or send flowers. Traditionally this will be red roses of course. Others may choose their purchases on the basis of colour, smell or even price but there’s a whole language and meaning to flowers too which is called Floriography.

Tulips: – apparently show love and passion too. Yellow ones which are my daughter’s favourite, mean ‘there’s sunshine in your smile,’ whereas red tulips are a declaration of love and white ones say ‘I’m worthy of you.’

Roses: – Red Roses as most will know symbolise Love and Desire but changing the colour of the flower leads to different connotations. For example, Yellow is for friendship, Pink for perfect happiness and Orange for fascination. There are different meanings for specific types of rose too, such as Tea Roses meaning ‘I’ll remember always’ and Dog Roses connecting to pain and pleasure. Formations also have an impact. Thinking back to the traditional dozen red roses, a bunch of a single bloom, means I love you or I still love you, whilst an assortment of colours represents the sentiment ‘you’re everything to me.’ A dozen red roses has become the norm, because of the significance of the number twelve within nature, philosophy and religion. The number 12 often represents a full cycle, so 12 months of the year, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 hours on a clock for instance. From ancient times, cultures around the world have developed calendars based on cycles of twelve, and there are many mythological and religious connections to the number also. The use of 12 across the natural and spiritual world means that 12 or a dozen, has taken on a universal quality which enhances the significance of a dozen roses.

Freesias: – demonstrate trust.

Turning now to other flowers we frequently buy in the UK:Carnations:- Pink carnations mean ‘I’ll never forget you,’ whilst red symbolise admiration and yellow rejection and disappointment, so probably best to avoid those! Lilies: – Calla Lilies represent beauty and Tiger Lilies wealth so the latter is perhaps a good choice if you are looking to impress.

46

Daffodils: – show regard.

Of course there are many more wonderful flowers to choose from, so if you really want to be sure of making the right impression, it’s worth asking your florist about their meaning. By Susan Brookes-Morris

W What to get the gardener in your life this Valentine’s Day?

50

ant a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? Forget the drooping daffs and jet-lagged lilies, flown halfway round the world and marked up to extortionate prices. For a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than a few days. Some gardeners actually dislike cut flowers, and most gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all the paper, yards of cellophane, and air-miles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a better option. Potted plants are more suggestive of permanent affection than a bunch of flowers anyway, and on a purely practical level, they give much better value for money! Jasmine, stephanotis and gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-shaped support. What could be more romantic than that?

Please mention BedsLocal when responding to adverts | www.bedslocalmag.co.uk

GARDENING We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem with rose bushes is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener I guarantee they will not mind. In fact they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms. Myrtle is another plant you might like to consider. It's been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall.

If you want to give a flower in bloom at the moment try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentally-friendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. 'Paperwhite' narcissi are beautifully scented and available now. With just a little thought you can come up with the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. By Rachael Leverton

GARDENING

Flood Recovery Flooding can have many long‐term detrimental effects on landscape plants. Flooding impedes the function of tree roots, essential for the tree to photosynthesize, with potentially serious physical damage. It also causes detrimental changes in soil nutrient availability and microbial communities. Long term flooding eventually leads to root and branch dieback and tree decline. Flooding stress can also increase the susceptibility of plants to serious plant pathogens. For these reasons a Flood Recovery Program has been developed to help offset the effects of long term flooding damage to trees. The program consists of: • Decompaction • Soil and Nutrient Management • Mulching • Pest and Disease Management

Decompaction

Decompaction using the air spade re‐opens the soil structure to a greater degree than before flooding, promoting recovery as more air reaches the roots and the re‐establishes a healthy aerobic microbial community. Airspading will also help to reduce instances of honey fungus and other soil borne pathogens.

Soil and Nutrient Management

Flooding dilutes and leaches nutrients from the root zone. Flooding is also associated with a decreased soil pH due to anaerobic respiration by soil microbes; this can reduce the availability of nitrogen to the tree. Nitrogen fertilization can help to mitigate this stress, even when applied during flooding. Soils flooded long term can also have a build-up of phytotoxic elements produced by anaerobic soil microbes. Soil nutrient analysis and tailored soil amendment and fertilization can correct deficiencies and aid the recovery of previously flooded trees to health.

Mulching

Mulches can provide nutrition for both the tree and healthy soil microbes that can help defend against root pathogens. They can also encourage worms and other soil fauna which improve nutrition and soil structure, maintaining aeration and drainage.

Pest and Disease Management

Prolonged flooding can be highly detrimental to overall tree health, weakening defences against pests and diseases. A significant risk is soil borne pathogens which are made more mobile by flooding and can enter water damaged root systems, including Phytophora and Pythium species. Fungi including, Honey fungus, Armillaria, also pose a threat.

SPORT

At the Blues first home game of 2016, the club was delighted to present a cheque to Cancer Research UK following the celebration of another fantastic Ladies Day which took place on Saturday 21st November when Ulster A visited Goldington Road in the British & Irish Cup. With Bedford picking up an excellent win in the cup, the fans certainly did their bit off the pitch as a staggering £5,000 was raised for Cancer Research. All of the special edition match day jerseys were sold at auction with Blues fans proverbially clambering over one another to get their favourite. With Sam Roberts hosting the auction, it was Steffan Jones who turned out to be the most popular man on the day with his worn jersey raising a whopping £600 after it was bought by Patrick Gray.

Bedford Town FC D

ecember in the league didn’t start well for the Eagles, as the side lost 1-0 away at Potters Bar. A late goal won the game for our opponents. Three days on, and a trip to Barton Rovers in the Bedfordshire Senior Cup did nothing to warm the travelling supporters up, as Barton ran out 2-0 winners.

Home fixtures for February are: Sat 6th Godalming Town – Sat 13th Aylesbury – Sat 27th Northwood. Home fixtures for March are Sat 12th Potters Bar – Mon 28th St Ives Town. All these games are 3pm kick off.

Bedford manager, Jon Taylor, brought Josh Beech back to the Eagles, and the midfielder looked as though he’d never been away, as he scored on his ‘debut’, at home to Ware; scoring the winning goal in an exciting victory, after Bedford had gone 1-0 up to 2-1 and finally winning 3-2. Beaconsfield SYCOB were the next opponents, and another exciting game at the Eyrie produced another win. Bedford were 2-0 up at half time with Beech scoring again. Beaconsfield stormed back early in the 2nd half to pull back to 2-2, but James Peters scored the winning goal later on to give Bedford another 3-2 win. Bedford’s last game before Christmas was another trip to Barton Rovers, and a hard fought 1-1 draw was played out, with Beech scoring again to make it three goals in three appearances. The Boxing Day clash saw AFC Rushden & Diamonds visit the Eyrie, and the highest attendance so far this season in the division (667) saw Bedford narrowly lose 2-1. Bedford’s next game was at home on 5th Jan, with the side running out 3-0 winners against Aylesbury United, with Beech hammering home his fourth goal in five matches. The latest game, on the 9th Jan saw the Eagles held 2-2 at home by Fleet Town. Josh Bamford scoring a peach of a goal late on to claim the draw. One date for the diary is: Saturday 13th February. It’s race night at the Eyrie. Entry is free and it starts at 7.30pm.
