E
very 20 minutes across the UK a child comes into care, in need of a foster family. This was the theme delivered by this year’s Foster Care Fortnight campaign called a ‘Time to Foster, Time to Care’. Throughout the campaign, people were asked to consider whether they could offer a young person(s) a home. Bedford Borough Council is currently in need of more fostering households within the borough. Cllr Shan Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care said: “We are looking for foster carers from a variety of different backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures and religions to meet the needs of our children. Whether people can foster

short-term or for more long-term periods, we would be delighted to hear from them. Fantastic foster carers are making such a difference to children’s lives.” The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Foster care provides children with a safe, secure and nurturing family environment, and allows them to keep in contact with their own families if they wish. Triple P – taking the guess work out of parenting
W
hen it comes to raising children and teenagers, everyone has an opinion. There are so many ideas out there, so how do you know what is best for your family? Bedford Borough Council’s Early Help team have joined forces with partners from the voluntary sector and schools to deliver the ‘Triple P’ – Positive Parenting Program which offers parents simple tips and practical strategies to help manage the big and small problems of family life. The free service is aimed at families with children of all ages, and addresses problems like tantrums, teenage rebellion, self-esteem issues, bedtime battles, disobedience and aggression. Triple P sessions and workshops will be delivered in schools and local community venues in Bedford over the coming months. Councillor Henry Vann, Portfolio Holder for Education, said: ‘This partnership between Triple P, the Council's Early Help Team, and the wider early help partnership, will really help support parents and equip them with the key skills to deal with the challenges they may face in raising children and young people. This free program supports our commitment to improving the lives of children throughout Bedford Borough.' Discover the history of Bedford’s embankment
D
id you know what happened to Old Waterloo in Bedford? Or, that a Russian Crimea gun was once on show in the town? These, and many other interesting facts, are now displayed on an interpretation board on Bedford’s Embankment area. Bedford tour guide and local historian David Fowler has delved deep into the Embankment’s past to highlight the rich and diverse heritage that has helped shape the picturesque area today. The board, designed by Drawing Attention, covers topics such as the story behind the building of the Embankment Gardens, the Suspension Bridge, Longholme Boating Lake and the Bandstand. David was awarded funding by Bedford Borough Council to produce the board, and he was supported in his research by the Bedfordshire Archives and Records Service. It is one of a number of history information boards David has been involved with around the town. Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “On behalf of the Council, I’d like to thank David Fowler and all those who contributed to the project. We are really pleased with the interpretation board and we hope it will be enjoyed for many years to come. It’s a great addition to The Embankment and provides a fascinating insight into the area’s rich history.”

That Referendum feeling I
I am sure that, on a bright early summer morning in Bedfordshire, the last thing anyone might want is to hear about the Referendum, again. But, forgive me. I would be failing in my duty as your Parliamentary representative if I did not offer you my opinion on the most important vote you are likely to cast in the next few decades. I am not equivocal or heavy hearted in casting my vote for the United Kingdom to remain a member of the EU. I believe it is in our interest as a nation, in the interest of our people, and in the interest of a wider world. Let me explain why. I think we will be better off, stronger and safer if we remain in. Being better off as a country, compared with being less well off if we leave, is a huge consideration for any household. In Bedfordshire, our employment depends on local manufacturing and services, on the rural economy and farming, and on the health of those businesses to which our population commutes every day, to London and around the region. We have access to a single market, driven forward by the UK, of 500million people.
any organisation connected with those who employ my constituents which does not agree that we are better off staying in. From large employers like the CBI, to trade unions, to those representing smaller business, to the City, to institutions such as the Bank of England, they all say that to leave the EU would cost the country billions of pounds. A vote to leave is a vote for risk. We will walk away from that single market for jobs goods and services, but cannot be told what will replace it. Being stronger in a community of nations matters too. We play a leading role in shaping international reactions to crises, from sanctions against Iran which helped drive a better bargain for peace, to efforts for environmental protection and combat climate change. NATO, so long a protector of peace for the West, wants us to stay in the EU. And we are safer. We work closely with other countries to fight cross-border crime and terrorism by sharing information to keep Britain safer. And by not being part of the Schengen system, we can exclude those who pose a threat to us, including EU nationals, and deport those who should not be here. But does the EU cost us? Yes, it does, about 1p for every taxpayers £ spent. I don’t think that’s a bad bargain.

The Big Celebration – Thanking Volunteers Community Voluntary Service (CVS) in Bedfordshire launches its new branding in June, celebrating our role in strengthening local social action in Bedfordshire. We join with the UK’s biggest celebration in recognising the contribution of 22 million people who volunteer in their communities across the UK. The Big Celebration is happening between 1 – 12 June this year when charities will be thanking their volunteers and celebrating the power of volunteering to bring communities together. Community Voluntary Service is your local voluntary and community sector support organisation and we aim to strengthen local social action in Bedfordshire through offering a range of services, promoting volunteering, making connections and encouraging partnerships within the sector, both locally and nationally. At CVS, we have an important part to play in bringing individuals and organisations together to create a happy volunteering experience for both. We spend time talking to potential volunteers to find out what kind of position would suit them best. Volunteering
comes in a whole variety of forms – you could be a trustee of a charity, helping with children’s clubs and activities, providing office or accounting support, or working directly with the general public. There are opportunities to use and develop a full range of skill sets and it is a great way to give back to your community through supporting a cause or interest that matters to you. Whether you have an hour a week to spare, or five days a week to fill, whether you can offer regular hours or occasional hours, there are positions to suit all. year. Volunteer mentors will provide a listening ear and will be an inspiration to the young people to achieve their goals and to build confidence and resiliency. Volunteers will also be offered to support staff during drop-in and workshop activities on the young carer’s project. All the above will give volunteer a good range of experience working on individual and group basis. Pet Dentistry at Acorn House Veterinary Surgery exactly where the tooth roots lie as dogs and cats have very long tooth roots compared to people. In this Xray, you can see the black area of bone loss around one of the diseased roots. Dogs have 42 teeth, so even with several diseased teeth removed, Wilma still has a beautiful smile! She woke up very quickly from her treatment and was back at home later that day. Within days she was stealing the cat’s biscuits again!
When you think about how often our own teeth need dental treatment despite regular brushing and flossing, it is not surprising that our pet’s teeth will need veterinary attention from time to time. Wilma is a lovely Jack Russell terrier who had developed a lot of tartar (hardened plaque) on her teeth over the past few years. She was given a general anaesthetic so that we could remove this tartar and assess the health of her teeth and gums properly.
Untreated dental disease causes infected gums, mouth pain and tooth loss. Bacteria in diseased gums can also spread to cause disease elsewhere in the body. At Acorn House Veterinary Surgery we provide routine dental health checks and provide advice on daily tooth brushing and the use of dental chews and diets. We have recently opened a brand new pet dentistry suite complete with dental Xray facilities and ultrasonic descaler so that we can look after your pet’s teeth as well as your dentist looks after yours.
Once the tartar had been removed we could see that lots of Wilma’s teeth were healthy but some had begun to loosen and some roots had become infected. These teeth needed to be extracted. Xrays were taken of Wilma’s teeth prior to extraction. Xrays are taken before a human patient has a tooth removed – however it is even more important for a veterinary surgeon to know

June is strawberry month and few things signal midsummer’s day more perfectly than a bowl of strawberries and cream. Eating seasonally is about eating the right foods at the right time – a crisp salad when the weather’s warm, a wholesome stew when it’s cold, strawberries in June, Brussels sprouts in December. Not only would strawberries look out of place on the Christmas table but they would cost a lot more too. Buying seasonally can be as much as a third cheaper than food bought out of season. As well as the lovely soft fruits that are coming into season, there’s also a wide array of British vegetables that peak this month too. Courgettes, asparagus, aubergine, beetroot, peas, broad beans, chilies and fennel - the list goes on and on. Not only is seasonal food fresher but also it’s tastier and more nutritious than food that has been force grown.
Buying your seasonal food locally guarantees a shorter time to reach your kitchen and maximises the nutritional benefit. When food is left to ripen on the plant, it contains more nutrients, which makes it naturally stronger and more resistant to disease. Eating ripe food close to home reduces the need to source food from overseas, ultimately reducing food miles and making it better for the environment. Force-grown fruit and vegetables that are produced in artificial conditions, require fertilisers and result in watery, flavourless produce. Out of season produce may have been picked six or more weeks before you buy and flown around the world to reach you, losing nutritional value, taste and quality. What are
allergies? An allergy is your body’s immune system reacting to a substance as though it was harmful. In the UK it is thought that 1 in 4 people will be affected by allergies sometime in their lifetime. The most common allergies are: • Grass and tree pollen – this allergy is called hay fever • Dust mites • Animal dander – tiny flakes of skin or hair • Food especially nuts, fruit, shellfish, eggs and cow’s milk. • Insect bites and stings • Medication including ibuprofen, aspirin, and certain antibiotics • Latex used to make some gloves and condoms • Mould – these can release small particles into the air that you can breathe in • Household chemicals including those in detergents and hair dyes.
What are the symptoms?
If the GP thinks it is severe or it’s not clear, they may refer you to an allergy specialist. The tests they may carry out are blood tests, patch tests, elimination diets or challenge test.
Treatment
The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid the substance you’re allergic to. For example the biggest cause of allergies is dust mites which are tiny insects found in household dust and you can limit the number in your home by: • Choosing hard wood or vinyl floors instead of carpets • Fitting roller blinds that can easily be wiped clean • Choosing leather, plastic or vinyl furniture • Cleaning cushions, soft toys, curtains and upholstered furniture regularly • Using tested allergy-proof covers on mattresses, duvets and pillows • Using a vacuum cleaner fitted with an HEPA (high efficiency particulate) air filter because it can trap more dust mites than ordinary vacuum cleaners. • Regularly wiping surfaces with a damp clean cloth – avoid dry dusting as this can spread dust into the air. • If one of your family members is allergic to mould keep your house well ventilated, remove any household plants, don’t dry clothes indoors, deal with any damp or condensation, and avoid
An allergic reaction can happen within a few minutes of exposure to an allergen. They can cause: • Sneezing • A runny, itchy nose • Red, itchy, watery eyes • Wheezing and coughing • A red, itchy rash • Worsening of asthma or eczema symptoms Most allergic symptoms are mild but occasionally a severe reaction called anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock can occur. This is a medical emergency and needs urgent medical treatment.
Diagnosis
If you think you or your child might have had an allergic reaction to something you should see your GP. If your GP thinks you have a mild allergy they will give offer advice and treatment to help manage the condition.

For food allergies carefully check the ingredients on food labels, order ”simple dishes” in restaurants as they are less likely to contain allergens, ask the staff for advice on what to choose, avoid places where different types of food could come into contact with each other such as buffets and bakeries. The severity of your hay fever will depend on which pollen you are allergic to. Typically people are affected by tree pollen in the spring and grass pollen in the summer. To help reduce the effects: • Stay indoors if the pollen count is high • Avoid drying bedding and clothes outside when the pollen count is high • Wear wraparound sunglasses • Keep doors and windows shut when possible • Shower and change your clothes after being outside • Avoid grassy areas such as parks and fields, particularly early in the morning, evening or night when the pollen count is highest. • Ask someone else to cut your lawn.
Medications
If your allergy is mild and you would just like to ease the symptoms, there are a number of medicines you can purchase from our pharmacy. The most common of these is antihistamines. They can be used as and when you notice the symptoms or to prevent allergic reactions e.g. you can take them in the morning when you know the pollen count will be high. Crowd-funding for Castle Quay Weekender In 2011, the seven empty units of Castle Lane became the venue for We Are Bedford’s free arts festival, the Castle Quay Weekender. Five years on and all the units are now full, the area is buzzing with life and the Castle Quay Weekender is back. But they need your help. This summer’s festival will take place on 18th and 19th June and is a grassroots initiative to celebrate Bedford’s Cultural Quarter. Organised by the local businesses and not-for-profit groups, the free event will showcase local musicians, artists and designers plus the best of Castle Lane’s food, art and culture. The main stage will host live music, children’s activities will take place on Castle Mound, the BedPop Record Shop will pop up at the Higgins and an affordable art & design fair will take place on the Higgins lawn. There will also be a ContTENTment area and Friends of Refugees will be raising awareness & funds as part of the festivities.
“We wanted to bring back the CQW to celebrate the changes that Castle Lane has undergone in the last five years,” said Erica Roffe of BedPop, part of the organising group. “We want to evoke the same DIY spirit that made the first CQW so special – the can-do attitude of the people of Bedford to make something brilliant happen without huge budgets, corporate sponsorship or commercial agendas. We are appealing for help to crowd-fund £1,500 to pay our musicians and performers, and we’re hoping that the local community will get behind this.” The live music will be provided by a mix of the best local bands and special guests, including The Darling Mundaring, Painted Lady and Rebecca de Winter. They will be joined by a host of DJs and local talent to entertain the crowds over the weekend. Local musician Leyla Burrows had decided to unite the local community through song. This June, she’s doing it again. MEET THE ANCESTORS - PART 3
Last month I hopefully gave you a few useful pointers to trace your family through the Census records back to 1841 and beyond. Once we are back to earlier times, the main websites contain access to all parish records so although their information is a little scant, you can trace back through the generations. The names will connect back within a small community, especially where people commonly named their children after themselves or their parents. Patterns emerge and links can be found to nearby villages where people move due to marriage or work necessities. These records are abundant back as far as about 1700 then start to thin out. We managed to get one particular line back to 1560 by this method and, for now, this is where we had to stop. Records available to

the website don’t really go back as well into the Sixteenth Century and you are now probably faced with the need to travel to find out more. We have visited one village church on our trail, on a line that curled back via London, Surrey and Hertfordshire to a small village not far from home. As a first attempt, we didn’t call ahead to ask about the parish clerk and their ancient manuscripts, but we did find a few possible family members laid out in the grounds, and possibly a later relative mentioned on the War Memorial Scroll inside the church. It certainly sets the old grey matter churning trying to imagine the lives of these predecessors, and it strikes you when you see more recent graves and mentions on the scroll that there are

probably people related to you still living there. We intend to do it properly next time but first there are many gaps to fill in. From the national records it is possible to find out a lot more information, and you can visit the Public Records Office in London to investigate further. Most Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates can be ordered from there, if you want a copy, and they contain a lot of information from parents details and occupations, to places and dates of birth and maiden names of spouses. The further you travel back into the gloomy mists of time, the wider the top of the tree becomes (everyone has a mum and dad, so it doubles with each generation) until somewhere along the line, most of us have probably shared an ancestor somewhere way back in history. We may all have a little bit of Shakespeare in us, or a splash of royal blood. We may have invaded, crusaded, built and created, through generations of Britons side by side. There may be a little drop of Norman blood in your veins, or one of you ancestors may have piled ashore with a grim-faced, heavily armed boatload of Saxons some six hundred years or so earlier. Many of us are distant limbs of the same immense family tree that trails across the land with roots firmly planted in the soil from Lands End to John O’Groats, or Dover to Derry and so, my long lost brethren, I raise my cup of tea to you all and wish you the best of luck with your search. Florence Foster Jenkins These days the phrase ‘based on real events’ when used in connection with a film can lead to a mix of feelings. So often it is used to almost justify a horror genre story and only uses the barest of details to allow it to be the case. This time around Florence Foster Jenkins is a real tale, even if it seems almost crazy to imagine that it could have really happened. Florence Foster Jenkins, played by Meryl Streep, is an heiress. It is the 1940’s and she loves music, runs a club for her friends putting on little shows and always dreamt of being a singer… problem is she really cannot sing, in fact she pretty much shrieks her way through her songs. This is a lovely, gentle comedy about a woman who only thinks of music and helping spread her love of it. She doesn’t realise how bad her singing is and her loving husband (Hugh Grant) does his utmost to shield her from ever finding out. You can almost see the comedy in this situation without even thinking about it but what Stephen Frears does so well is use the obvious but in a loving way. This is as much a tribute to the woman as it is a comedy about her.

THE BROWN-TAIL MOTH (Euproctis chrysorrhoea) Oak processionary moths (OPM) are a defoliating pest of English, Sessile and Turkey oaks (Quercus robur, Q.petraea and Q.cerris). The moths are widely distributed in central and southern Europe. In the southern countries of Europe OPM populations are controlled by natural predators, that, unfortunately do not exist in northern Europe. Consequently, OPMis now firmly established in northern France, the Netherlands, and has been reported in southern Sweden. Infestations of OPM caterpillars were first found in London in 2006. Oak processionary moth is also a risk to human health. The older caterpillars (3rd to 6th instars) are covered in irritating hairs that contain a urticating toxin (thaumetopoein or closely related compounds). Contact with these hairs, or their inhalation, can result in skin irritation (dermatitis) and allergic reactions (rashes, conjunctivitis). If hairs are inhaled respiratory distress such as including asthma or even anaphylaxis. These problems are significant because oak
processionary is often most abundant on urban trees, along forest edges and in amenity woodlands. Eggs are laid from July to early September. Each female lays between 100 and 200 eggs on twigs and small branches in the canopy. These hatch in April Newly hatched larvae have a uniformly brown body and dark head. As they grow they lighten in colour so that, by the time they are mature, they have a grey body and dark head. These older larvae have a single dark stripe running down the middle of the back and a whitish line along each side. Clumps of extremely long white hairs arise from reddish-orange pinacula along the length of the body. Less easy to see are the many thousands of short hairs that also cover the larvae. It is these short hairs that contain the irritant toxin. OPM poses a new and difficult management problem for our trees in cities. Chemical control appears to be the only current viable treatment for this pest.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. The difficult patch E
very garden has a couple of problem patches. I’m often asked which plants I’d recommend for a problem area and two which always crop up are damp shade and dry shade. Let’s deal with damp shade first. It’s actually less of a problem than you might expect. Okay, you’ll never grow a good lawn there, bulbs will rot, and sun-loving annuals won’t thrive, but there are loads of plants that will look wonderful. The trick in the case of damp shade is to go for leaf colour, plant form, and texture. Ajuga is excellent for ground cover. A. metallica has purple leaves and tiny blue flowers and A. reptans ‘Variegata’ is a pretty variegated cream and green variety. Astilbe does very well in damp shade; it has impressive red, pink or white flowery plumes depending on the variety chosen. Hostas are also a good choice, though in damp conditions you’ll need to be on slug-watch! If your shade is very dense then don’t choose golden varieties as the colour will fade. Hostas look wonderful planted with primulas, which also do well in these conditions. Some ferns love damp shade, including the Maidenhair fern, Adiantum pedatum; most varieties of dryopteris, and the ostrich feather fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris.

Dry shade is definitely trickier. I don’t recommend fighting Mother Nature but I do think dry shade is one area where she sometimes needs a hand, so enrich dry soil with compost, well-rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost before planting, as this will encourage some moisture retention. Bergenias are attractive but tough enough for dry shade and their leathery leaves colour well in the autumn, particularly Bergenia cordifolia purpurea. The pink flowered varieties are the most commonly seen but there are red and white varieties too. I have a ‘Bressingham White’ which is quite lovely. My favourite plant for dry shade is the Euphorbia. Not all varieties are suited to these conditions but E. amygdaloides with it’s red stems and lime-green flower heads will generally do very well. Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum multiflorum) is another standby. It looks like a large lily of the valley and the variegated variety is very pretty. The trick with problem areas is to embrace them as part of your garden Treated as a gardening challenge they can be fun to plant and you’ll feel a tremendous sense of achievement when you do succeed. Bedford Blues Bedford Blues may have suffered a Greene King Championship semi-final defeat to Bristol, but no one will doubt that they have had a remarkable season which has seen them truly forget the last two campaigns and return to the top four of the league.
Before the season had even kicked off, the Blues had been tipped for the drop by former Rotherham supremo Lee Blackett. How wrong he was! Over the summer, Bedford’s Director of Rugby Mike Rayer began assembling a youthful squad of players with the likes of scrum half Jordan Burns, lock Mark Flanagan and hooker Sam James joining the ranks while also retaining some wise old heads with Paul Tupai, Phil Boulton and Mike Howard all signing on again. The Blues also maintained their working relationship with Saracens which saw Biyi Alo, Henry Taylor, Hayden Thompson-Stringer, Joel Conlon, George Perkins and Tom Griffiths while a loan deal also saw Alex Lundberg and Piers O’Conor join the club from Wasps. Just as importantly to the new signings was the development of players such as Dean Adamson, Pat Tapley, Josh Buggea, Justin Blanchet, Camilo Parilli-Ocampo and Charlie Clare who would all go on to have impressive campaigns. Bedford started their season with a bang by picking up a bonus point win over Bristol at Ashton Gate and then going on to defeat Moseley the following weekend – Blackett may have been regretting his words already. The run up to Christmas saw the Blues pick up further victories over Rotherham, Nottingham, Ealing and Yorkshire Carnegie with the final two games being won

with the final kick of the ball. There were defeats to London Welsh, London Scottish, Jersey, Cornish Pirates and Doncaster but Bedford were heading the right way up the table with confidence high in their players and fans alike as they pipped Moseley and London Scottish to the post over the festive break. The British & Irish Cup saw Bedford topping the Pool which they shared with Bristol, Ulster A and Scarlets Select with five wins securing a home quarter-final which they would lose to Jersey. Back to league action and the Blues continued to play their fast-flowing brand of rugby and took more scalps as they battered London Welsh 64-20 and broke Nottingham hearts with a last minute try that followed 20 plus phases and sealed the win. Further wins over Ealing Trailfinders and Cornish Pirates elevated the Blues to fourth in the table and despite losing to Doncaster in the penultimate game of the season, Jersey’s inability to overcome Ealing saw the Blues secure a play-off place for the first time since they reached the final in 2013. ummer, a time to relax, go on holiday and enjoy some time away from the Eyrie for most Eagles fans. This is not the case for the volunteers and individuals at Bedford Town as we prepare for another season in the Southern League Central division. Whilst the turnstiles are not ticking and a ball is not being kicked, hard work is taking place to make sure that the Eyrie is looking its best for when the first preseason fixture comes around on Tuesday 5th July against Hemel Hempstead. The Eagles then welcome a host of football league sides as Stevenage FC (12th July) and Peterborough United (19th July) both arrive with squads for Tuesday evening fixtures. The standout fixture of preseason is the Luton Town game, where the Hatters will be bringing down their first team
for a 3pm kick off on Saturday 16th July. Despite this being River Festival weekend, this should be a very entertaining afternoon for all connected with both clubs. This certainly looks to be an exciting time, before the hard work of the new league season kicks in on Saturday 6th August.
