COUNCIL NEWS Having a sexual health check up could not be easier – so get tested
G
etting yourself screened for sexually transmitted infections should be part of a normal, healthy lifestyle. That’s why a new sexual health screening campaign launched on Wednesday 1 June. The joint campaign between Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire councils will outline the importance of getting yourself checked, to help you and others stay healthy and safe. It is important to have a sexual health screen for all STIs, including HIV, at least annually, and also every time you change sexual partner. According to Public Health England the rate of gonorrhoea infection in England has doubled in the last five years. Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is associated with risky sexual activity. In Bedford Borough there were 87 cases in 2014 (a rate of 54 per 100,000), while in Central Bedfordshire there were 57 (22 per 100,000); compared to 63 per 100,000 across England.

Some STIs have no symptoms so people can go for long periods of time without being diagnosed, which can increase the risk of infertility and increase the chance of passing the infection to others. Councillor Louise Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Public Health at Bedford Borough Council said: “We are encouraging people to value their sexual health. It’s important that sexually active people get tested routinely. It’s the sensible thing to do and should be as routine as visiting a dentist. It’s also worth noting that many STIs are easily treated.” There are a range of sexual health services available across Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire which provide free, non-judgemental and confidential advice and information, and HIV testing. Do you know how to keep your child safe online?
P
arents across Bedfordshire are being urged to wise up about online safety, as part of a new campaign which aims to protect children from online grooming. The campaign offer parents information on how to keep their child safe on the web, as well as advising them of the signs of online sexual exploitation and where they can turn to with concerns. Parents are being encouraged to have a conversation with their children about the internet, to make sure that they’re aware of the dangers of sharing information with strangers and taking compromising images. Detective Superintendent Nick Bellingham, of the Bedfordshire Police Public Protection Unit, said: “It’s important to recognise that child sexual exploitation (CSE) can happen online as well as in person, and that’s why we felt it was important to launch this campaign to help reduce the risk of that happening where possible. “There are some basic steps that parents can take help keep their children safe online. Take some time to look at their security settings and make sure they’re set to friends only, and check that they are only speaking to people online that you both know and trust in real life. Most importantly of all, speak to your children openly and honestly about using the internet safely.” Other advice includes explaining to your child that they should keep their personal information
private and should only post content and photos that they wouldn’t mind sharing with their family. The campaign will also highlight signs to look out for that a young person is being sexually exploited, such as a sudden or unexpected change in behaviour, or receiving unexplained gifts or money. Cllr Shan Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council said: “There is no greater responsibility than keeping young people safe and children accessing the internet can be effectively inviting a stranger into their homes, which is of course terrifying. By keeping parents informed on the topic of online grooming and asking them to be vigilant, we stand united in ensuring young people avoid becoming victims of this abhorrent crime.” Parents and young people alike are also encouraged to visit www.bedfordshireagainstcse. org for more information on both on and offline CSE as well as for advice on where to go if you have a concern about CSE.

They think it's all over W
here were you fifty years ago, on the 30th July 1966? According to Bobby Charlton, about a million people were at Wembley to see England win the World Cup final, or so they have claimed to him over the years! In fact the attendance was 98,000 so those of us not there must have our own memories of the day and where we were. (For younger readers I should add that I am referring to England winning the World Cup in football- not cricket’s 20/20, nor rugby, nor cheese rolling or conkers. We really did win the World Cup, once)
I was on holiday with my parents in Portugal. We sat in the small bar/tv room in the hotel, surrounded almost exclusively by German tourists. The commentary was Portuguese, and of course it was all in black and white, so maximum attention had to be paid. I can still recall the event quite vividly. Our Portuguese hosts were mostly supporting ustheir magnificent team, led by Eusebio, had been defeated by two Bobby Charlton goals in the semi-final and the memory of Manchester United’s 5-1 demolition of Benfica in Lisbon just a couple of months previously had led to deep respect for the English game. I remember our German guests mostly leaving quietly, though in all fairness I didn’t know the German for ‘that ball never crossed the line’, and my Dad advising me not to be too exuberant so as not to cause embarrassment to them.

The power of sport, with its vivid impact of special moments, has inspired one of the best social enterprises I have come across – Sporting Memories. They help and encourage groups, homes, day centres or anyone to harness materials for sporting memory sessions which can help unlock minds. I have seen this in action, visiting a care home some months ago where a few football programmes and a couple of old newspapers helped a gentleman recall the Arsenal of his youth, and some of the games which had brought him pleasure. Those memories helped unlock a little more that afternoon.
I remember, I remember.
Whilst I had long known the power of sport and its connection to memorable events, from the Olympics to Mohammed Ali, seeing this demonstration in such a context was both humbling and satisfying. Enjoy your own memories of the day ‘We won the Cup!’.

Take care around cows! Jakey visited the surgery as an emergency on a beautiful May evening. Whilst minding his own business on a country walk, he had been the focus of some unwanted attention from a group of bullocks. Unfortunately, Jakey had received a kick to the face and had suffered damage to his upper canine tooth. Jakey was given a general anaesthetic so that we could assess the damage fully. The kick had knocked Jakey’s tooth right out of his jaw, shattering the tooth socket and tearing out a piece of Jakey’s gum. Reconstructive surgery was performed to recreate a smooth jaw bone surface and close the wound with a flap of tissue created from the inside of Jakey’s lip. Jakey made an excellent recovery, pausing only to regurgitate some of the cow manure that he had been eating at the time of the attack! Cattle are generally gentle creatures. However, dogs do appear to be at particular risk of

This can lead to injuries to the dogs themselves, but also to their accompanying owners. Risks are particularly high when cows are protecting young calves. In general, it is preferable to avoid entering fields containing cattle when walking with dogs. If it is essential to enter, dogs should be kept on a lead and walked calmly and steadily around the perimeter of the field rather than across the centre. However, if you are unlucky enough to find yourself threatened by wary cattle it is safest to release your dog from the lead. Your dog has a much better chance of outrunning the cattle if he /she is free. Once your dog has left your side you will become much less of a target as well.

Eat in season this July
The one thing that is guaranteed with a British summer is that the sun won't shine every day. Despite this fact, summer barbeques have seen a huge increase in popularity over the last few years, and with "True Brit" stoicism we are prepared to get that grill going outdoors whatever the weather. Sandy Boyd from Summerhill Farm Shop in Cardington gives us his tips on what to enjoy in July.
Barbecuing can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it but the most important thing is that it should be all about getting flavour into the food you cook. I am a great believer in using the best quality meat you can afford and keeping the cooking simple, which for me is cooking over charcoal, it will give you that wonderful mixture of crisp, sticky and smokey flavours depending on the style of marinade you are using. Marinades are key to adding flavour and tenderising the meat, rubs do a very similar job but remember that it is only the salt, or the acidity in lemon juice or yogurt that actually tenderise the meat, the oil is usually there to help spread the marinade or rub. Local meats are at their best now such as our Bedfordshire lamb & chicken from Jamie Murdoch’s farm in Cardington. Lamb rumps,
chops and butterflied legs lend themselves to being deliciously marinated in yogurt and spices. Our own British White Park Beef from the Southill Estate is just becoming available again, having been maturing nicely over the last month. All our hindquarter steaks (Sirloin, Fillet & Rump) as well as Rib Eyes from the forequarter are perfect for the intense heat and quick cooking that a barbecue provides. TV chefs are now singing the praises of more unusual cuts such as short ribs and bavette steaks and they are so tasty but don’t try and just cook them from raw on the barbie as they need some serious slow cooking to tenderise the meat before you finish them off on the grill. Finally, don’t forget your greens, you can parcel up veggies in foil with a splash of water and some herbs to cook them at the side of the grill. Locally grown new potatoes are available now as well and they are delicious if you par boil them for 8 minutes before popping them into another foil parcel on the grill for an additional 10 minutes with a knob of butter, a few garlic cloves and some fresh rosemary, mint or chives. Don’t forget to give them an occasional shake to stop them burning, perfect! Protect Yourself this Summer

here is no safe way to tan but if you are desperate for a little colour you should exfoliate before applying a sun screen of at least factor 15 about 30 minutes before you go ahead again just before you actually do go out. This should be repeated each time you go into the pool or sea.

The sunscreen you use should have a SPF (against UVB) of at least 15 and Star rating (against UVA) of at least 3.
What if I get sunburnt?
If you or your child gets sunburn you should get out of the sun as soon as possible. Cool the skin by sponging it with cold water or apply lavender oil which will ease the pain and prevent blistering. Drink plenty of fluids to cool down and prevent dehydration and apply a water based moisturiser like petroleum jelly. Take painkillers to relieve the pain and do not go out in the sun till the skin is fully healed. The more often you get sunburnt, especially when you are young, the more likely you could get skin cancer.
The most common sign of skin cancer is the appearance of a new mole or a change in an existing one. This can happen anywhere on your body but your back, legs and face are the most likely to be affected. If you notice any change in your moles you should see your GP.

An Introduction
Bedford Daycare Hospice provides individualised holistic care for patients with life limiting illness from the point of diagnosis through investigations and treatment to remission or palliative care. Referrals can be made by health or social care professionals, by a carer or family member or by the patient themselves. Services are available to patients registered with a North or Mid Beds GP and are available Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm.

Tuesday “Pop-In� Day
This service has recently been developed into a 12 week education programme for the newly diagnosed patient, those receiving treatment for cancer and the initial period post-treatment, the aim of which is to provide information and promote wellbeing.
Complementary Therapy
Therapies on offer include aromatherapy, massage, Reiki, reflexology and Indian head massage and are delivered in accordance with local and national guidelines. GP permission is sought before treatment and all therapies are

Summer Reading Challenges
Saturday 16th July to Saturday 10th September. Bedford Borough libraries are getting ready for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which asks 4-11 year olds to borrow and read library books over the summer. The Challenge has a new theme each year and this year, it’s The Big Friendly Read, delivered in collaboration with The Roald Dahl Literary Estate to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday! The Big Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge 2016 will feature some of Roald Dahl's best-loved characters and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. As they borrow and read at least six library books over the summer, they can collect six special cards to complete their folder. After reading six library books children will collect a Big Friendly Read Certificate; if they read twelve library books they will be rewarded with a pair of amazing rainbow glasses; and by reading a mammoth eighteen library books children will receive a Big Friendly Read medal!

Bedfordshire’s Domesday Mills – Part 1
After the Norman invasion of 1066, King William set about creating a full account of exactly what he had acquired within his new kingdom. The Domesday Book, as it became known, was completed in 1086 and contained details of all the people, livestock, buildings and land throughout the whole of England. It was one huge undertaking for the time, and was as accurate a snapshot of the nation as has ever been attempted. One of the key items listed were the many watermills that were dotted along the rivers wherever there was a settlement nearby, and enough power in the flow of the water. This is itself was a contentious issue, as a mill pond may be used to hold back water in dry periods, causing downstream mills to struggle and boatmen to run aground, so fights would sometimes ensue.

Many watermills were listed within the borders of our county, perhaps unsurprising as there are many tributaries flowing to the rivers Great Ouse and the Lea. A little more surprising, however, is that quite a few of them have survived into the present era. Over the coming months I am going to study a few of these survivors of war, plague, famine, economics, and the onslaught of modern living. Most have been replaced and rebuilt a few times over the span of almost a thousand years, but retain their spot on the riverbank and have kept their basic purpose of grinding corn to give the English folk their daily bread right up until recent times. Now, in the age of large farms under the plough of agri-business, and modern factory produced flour and bread, many have

had to diversify to remain in existence, but they are still, in their basic structure and appearance, a watermill. There were over 400 listed in Bedfordshire in 1855, so it was at the time a major centre of flour producing. To kick of the series then, I have chosen one of Bedfordshire's most successful, Jordan's Mill between Broom and Biggleswade. Originally listed as Holme Mill, this was built on an ancient site on the old hamlet of Holm, named by Danish settlers in the Ninth century, and there has been a mill here for over a thousand years. Following a fire in 1894, the flour mill was updated with a 25 horsepower water-wheel and a 20 horse-power oil engine to power the Carter’s roller system that is still in use today. The Jordan family have held the mill for over 130 years, and the mill has since survived several other fires, and was run by the ladies during the First World War. Today the mill is at the centre of the Jordan family’s empire producing cereals, crunchy bars and healthy snacks, as well as being one of the regions’ leading cattle feed suppliers.
From an original Domesday valuation of 47 shillings (including another watermill – two for the price of one, Mr Conqueror!) the modern site includes not only the working mill and the buildings of the Jordans works, but is also home to an impressive visitors centre, fully equipped with a cafeteria, tours of the working mill and an interactive museum in the Mill Barn explaining the history of local food production. It is great to see a flourishing business centred on a site with so much deep-rooted history, and from experience I know their cereals are among the very best I have tasted. The Nice Guys The Nice Guys gives us the new hot, brooding young gun actor Ryan Gosling and teams him up with an older actor who was very similar to him in his youth… Russell Crowe. The premise behind Nice Guys is that they are two very different kinds of ‘detectives’ in 1970’s LA. Gosling is a standard Private Investigator, though he is an alcoholic wimp & has no real idea of what he is doing, while Crowe is pretty much a thug and solves problems by beating people up. This is the way the best buddy movies really work, you get two opposites, actor wise and character wise, and get them to work together. It is a great way of creating drama and pushing the characters into situations where one of them is really uncomfortable The Nice Guys is a very old fashioned action adventure buddy movie and is all the better because of this. It reminds me an awful lot of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (not surprising as it was written and directed by the same man) which is a terrific little unlauded movie and I think The Nice Guys will be looked back on as another cult classic like its predecessor in a few years time. The Wood is not all it seems, but then neither is Agnieszka.

Diplodia Tip Blight
Sphaeropsis sapinea (syn. Diplodia pinea) Diplodia tip blight is a devastating disease of twoand three-needle pines. It is caused by the fungus Sphaeropsis sapinea (syn. Diplodia pinea), thus is also called Sphaeropsis tip blight. The disease starts with needle infections, which spread into branch tips. The fungus weakens the tree so that secondary insects and diseases attack and cause mortality. Most pines and spruces are susceptible, especially when planted outside their natural ranges. Austrian, ponderosa, mugo, red and Scots pine are most seriously affected.
then up the needle. Diplodia tip blight more readily infects, and causes more damage on, stressed trees. Therefore, to reduce potential problems it is best to maintain a vigorous tree. To keep the tree vigorous, it should be mulched, watered, fertilized and pruned. Mulch should be applied from the trunk to the drip line at a depth of 2-4 inches. Avoid mulching directly against the trunk. Wood chips are one of the best mulch materials. Other materials, which can be used, include bark, pine needles and leaf compost.
The first obvious symptom is a yellowing then browning of young needles in the spring, usually on the lower portions of the crown. Branch tip and buds are quickly killed and become soaked with resin. This resin may drip from needles and also makes the dead tip somewhat flexible.
Trees should be irrigated during dry periods in the spring and summer. Avoid sprinklers, which wet the needles. Instead use a soaker hose, drip or microsprinkler system. If the tree is nutrient deficient, fertilization will improve tree vitality and reduce susceptibility to disease. Once the tree is infected, all of the above recommendations should be followed as well as pruning and applying fungicides. Pruning will not provide effective control of the disease. However, dead tips may be pruned to improve the appearance of the tree. If pruning is the only management method used, cones should also be removed since they are a major source of inoculum. Fungicide treatments should begin at budbreak and be repeated two or three times at 14-day intervals.

They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. Garden Ornaments Ornaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ‘em or hate ‘em subject. I fell firmly into the hate ‘em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs. Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, windmills and concrete toadstools. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a banshee-like scream, brandishing a broom at us. Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed. As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met: Context The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to
avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures. Size Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are there to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you. My father had a grumpy gargoyle-like creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girly friend of mine has a series of small bronze faeries set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality. I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a boulder fountain and I occasionally brandish a broomstick at my sons when their football strays too near... By Rachel Leverton
