Red Cross needs fundraisers across Bedfordshire
taking people to the shops or appointments, with mileage covered by the charity, but they will now have a backup option if this isn’t possible. It will also be available to any of the Red Cross teams who need transport, including fundraisers, refugee support workers and emergency response crews. In the wake of this successful fundraising campaign, the Red Cross is now looking for new volunteers to help raise more funds to support its work in the UK as well as overseas. Bedfordshire community fundraiser Natasha Robertson said: “I’d love to hear from people with a bit of spare time and energy who would like to help us fundraise in the area. There are so many ways people can get involved, from running a marathon to holding a bucket, or placing some collection tins in shops for us. The British Red Cross in Bedfordshire has announced that thanks to the unstinting efforts of volunteer fundraisers, it has been able to buy a new emergency vehicle which can be used by all its community services in the area. The charity now wants to build on this success by recruiting more volunteers to give a little bit of their time to help raise more muchneeded funds in the area. The vehicle will also be useful to the charity’s ‘support at home’ service, a volunteer-led scheme across Bedfordshire which helps people who may be in need of extra support after an accident, illness or hospital stay to regain their confidence and independence. Red Cross volunteers generally use their own transport when making home visits and

COUNCIL NEWS 1-4 St Pauls' Square wins John Gedge award
T
he John Gedge Award for contribution to heritage has been awarded to Bedford Borough Council, Aldwyck Housing Group, and V E Parrott (Oakley) Ltd for the restoration of the buildings at 1-4 St Paul’s Square, Bedford. The award was presented recently by Sylvia Woods, the president of the Bedford Architectural, Archaeological and Local History Society (BAALHS), to representatives from the three organisations, in the Mayor’s Parlour. The John Gedge Award commemorates Major John Gedge TD, FRIBA (1903-2001), who championed the conservation of architectural heritage in and around Bedford Borough. The buildings had been unused for almost 45 years, but have been given a new lease of life as much needed town centre affordable housing. The project was achieved with a grant from Bedford High Street’s Townscape Heritage Initiative which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Bedford Borough Council and BedfordBID; the Homes and Communities Agency ‘Empty Homes Initiative’ funding; Bedford Borough Council’s affordable housing budget and Aldwyck Housing Group’s own financing.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Thanks to Bedford Architectural Archaeological and Local History Society (BAALHS) for giving recognition to this crucial project which has both preserved and given new life to these historic properties in the heart of Bedford’s town centre. We are delighted to have been part of this project to bring them back into use after they have sat empty and lifeless for so many years. Now lovingly restored and in-keeping with the site’s medieval heritage, it’s great to see these buildings in use as affordable homes.” Joe Cook, Executive Director of Sales and Development at Aldwyck, said: “We are delighted to receive this award and be recognised for the commitment to architectural heritage at St Paul’s Square. St Paul’s Square is an important building and I am proud that Aldwyck have been involved in this unique and ambitious project, which has only succeeded through the hard work of all parties and demonstrates a true partnership approach.” Sylvia Woods, spokesperson from BAALHS, said: “We were very pleased to give the award and thanks to all concerned.”

#Just Turn Up to Feel Good “The Wellbeing Hub” A brand new social activity session for mental health and wellbeing Since March 2015, Bedford Borough Council’s Sport Development Team have been running a ‘Just Turn Up’ programme to help people access affordable, local physical activity. Now, the Just Turn Up initiative has set up a brand new arrangement which is set to offer the local community a place to go to improve their mental wellbeing through physical activity. Bedford Borough Council’s Sport Development Team has partnered with Bedfordshire Mental Health and Wellbeing Services, which are provided by East London Foundation NHS Trust (ELFT), Mind and Mind in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes (Mind BLMK) to design the bespoke sporting sessions via a ‘Wellbeing Hub’ for people experiencing conditions such as generalised anxiety disorder, eating disorders, panic attacks and stress. The Wellbeing Hub, in the activities room, on the 3rd floor of Bedford Central Library, will initially offer two core sports; yoga and table tennis. There will also be a social walk once a month. The sessions started on Wednesday 2 March, from 1pm – 3pm - and take place every Wednesday, for 16 weeks. Further sports and activities may be added in the future. Cllr Louise Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Public Health at Bedford Borough Council, said: “We all know that being physically active is good for our bodies, but our physical health and mental health are closely linked. Often, when people feel isolated, the thought of taking part in sporting activities can be daunting. The new sessions are designed by mental health professionals and
supported by volunteers with lived experience of mental health to support people to feel comfortable in taking part.” Participants do not need to have a diagnosis to attend the session as the session is designed to support those who have personally recognised that they may be experienced issues with mental wellbeing. Following research and a pilot scheme with Mind and ELFT, this new Wellbeing Hub has been designed to support people to feel comfortable getting out and getting active with other people. The #Just Turn Up programme is funded through Sport England’s CSAF programme and the National Lottery funding which has helped local people get into new sports and participate in a flexible and informal way. Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Exercise programmes and other treatments like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness have been shown to improve anxiety and depression, and quality of life for people with chronic illnesses. Other non-active elements of this programme will be introduced to our libraries, and other services, in support of these sessions.” #Just Turn Up team activities will be relaxed and informal and those taking part will be encouraged to do so at their own pace. It is £2 a day for the #Just Turn Up sessions - for as much, or as little, as someone wants to take part in. No booking is required and places are offered on a first come first served basis. The Bunyan and Harpur Writing Competition 2016 ‘Recording Bedfordians’ The Trust has joined forces with John Bunyan Museum to launch a major Writing Competition for children, as part of its 450th anniversary celebrations. The competition is open to children living in Bedford Borough within the following 4 age categories: Category 1 Category 2 Category 3 Category 4
5-9 years 10-14 years 14-16 years 16-18 years
The theme of the competition is ‘Recording Bedfordians’ and entrants will be given the task of writing a 500 word newspaper report on a Bedford character. It could be Sir William Harpur or John Bunyan, both of whom have played a key role in shaping Bedford as it is today. Or it could be another resident connected with the town, perhaps Charles Wells, John Howard or even Glen Miller who was based here during the war. It could be written from a modern day point of view, or during the events of the time. Or you might choose a contemporary Bedfordian such as Paula Radcliffe or Alistair Cooke. Alternatively, why not create your own fictional character such as a local lace maker in the 17th Century or a resident in the old Victorian Workhouse (which later became North Wing Hospital). The choice is yours.

The competition will be judged by representatives of some of the town’s key journalists with representatives from the Beds on Sunday, Times & Citizen, The Clanger and Rosetta Publishing, all overseeing a category each. There will be 12 prizes in total with a first, second and third prize for each of the categories. 1st Prize 2nd Prize 3rd Prize

Additionally, there will be special commendation prizes for the most imaginative reports which feature John Bunyan or Sir William Harpur. All prize winners will get to see their work in print, as well as featuring in a special celebration evening at the Quarry Theatre, St Luke’s during the Autumn. The closing date for the competition is Monday 30th May and the winners will be announced prior to a special presentation evening at the Museum on Tuesday 5th July 2016.

Strategy and Consultations – what is the role of an MP?
W
hen the larger strategic decisions are being made in our region, and in NE Bedfordshire in particular, I have to work out what my role is on each occasion, how I can engage as many people as possible, and how we all have an opportunity to put our views. Currently the A1 East of England Strategy Study is under discussion. The objectives are to understand the strategic case for making improvements to the A1, to review previous study work, other relevant data, and current investment plans To identify the options for improving the A1, understand the operational and technical feasibility, and user benefits and challenges, of the different options. To look at benefits and impacts resulting from improving access to the strategic corridor in the region and resulting from additional capacity. And most importantly from a local perspective, to understand how options impact on the local
and regional economy. This is one of those paragraphs that you feel should end with ‘No pressure then?’ ! So how is this done? The Department of Transport has been evidence gathering, seeking views from key groups, stakeholders and, local Authorities, and looking at how this fits with wider national strategy for road improvements and planning. Locally I have started a series of stakeholder meetings. Small groups – starting with our Parish and Town Councils – to discuss with the DfT team leading this study, to talk through what they know so far, how their current thinking might impact on our local villages and communities and what is the best we can do for our whole area, NE Beds and beyond, to make for safer, better roads, good transport links, and the protection of parts of our environment that are very important to us. I am working with my colleagues, both elected members and officials, on the local Authorities, to aid all these discussions. So what’s my role? Well it’s a mediator, it’s a chairman, it’s a facilitator, and a decision maker. I take my role in this very seriously, I want to have as many views as I can on this study and plan, as well as others that come up. So do let me know what you think. Queen's Birthday Beacon to light up Bedford in April
A
beacon on the top of Bedford’s Castle Mound will be lit on the evening of 21 April to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Hosted by Bedford Borough Council, local people are being invited to attend the free celebration. The open event starts at 7pm and the beacon will be lit at 7.30pm. So far over 250 birthday beacons are planned throughout the United Kingdom to mark the Queen’s special day with organisations including town and parish councils, local authorities, youth groups and heritage sites taking part. Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in the national beacon ceremonies to mark the Queen’s 90th Birthday. The events that take place on this day of celebration can help foster a real sense of community spirit, bringing together people young and old.” Community groups and local parish or town councils in Bedford Borough are encouraged to get involved in the lighting of birthday beacons. The Queens official birthday will be celebrated in June and marked with a mass street party on the Mall on the weekend of 11-12 June. As with the Silver Jubilee in 1977, the Golden Jubilee in 2002 and the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the nation is expected to mark the occasion with street parties and community events reflecting the events taking place in the capital, across the country. The Government has produced a guide to help communities organise their own street party in time for the official birthday weekend. Do you think you know about Parkinson’s Disease? It’s all about shaking, shuffling old dears - right? Wrong! Of course, some people do fit that stereotype but by no means all. Although most sufferers are over 50, it can strike anyone at almost any age and some have not a tremor or a shake to be seen. A lack of dopamine in the brain causes many frustrating symptoms such as stiffness, slowness and tiredness that make ordinary things like dressing, writing and using a phone difficult. The search for a cure continues. BUT special exercises do help and, if you were a fly on the wall at Clapham Village Hall on a Wednesday morning, you would see a determined group of people who are not content just to sit at home and let themselves deteriorate. To the strains of lively music including Abba, people of varying ages and mobility are giving it their all – encouraged and inspired by their enthusiastic and energetic leader, Jane (whose

husband is one of the younger class members). In September last year the maximum attendance was just six, but word spread and by this February, numbers had rocketed to 20-plus. In a happy and mutually supportive atmosphere, the classes have evolved to suit varying needs. The tea break is now a regular and popular feature, where there is a constant buzz of conversation. Friendships have been forged and helpful tips swapped among people who may previously have felt isolated and alone. An offshoot of the fitness class is a Nordic walking group (proven to especially benefit people with Parkinson’s) which meets on Tuesdays at 9.45 am in Bedford Park. One in 500 people in the UK has Parkinson’s, with someone newly diagnosed each hour. So if you know anyone locally who could benefit, do encourage them to give us a try. o you struggle to find information about details of a funeral service following a death? Have you ever missed a funeral because nobody told you that a friend had died? Bedford Borough Council has introduced a new service which shows details of every funeral taking place at Bedford Crematorium, Norse Road Cemetery and Foster Hill Road Cemetery. The diary at www.bedford.gov.uk lists the time and location of the service, the name of the deceased and the funeral director. The family of the deceased can also request a more detailed online obituary which may give information including the date and place of death, age, names of close relatives and arrangements for flowers.

Farm shop expert and manager of Bedford’s Summerhill Farm Shop, Sandy Boyd, tells us about eating seasonally and what should be on your plate this spring.
Who hasn't relished the first fresh asparagus, courgette or tomato at the beginning of a new season. Not only is seasonal food fresher but also it’s tastier and more nutritious than food that has been force grown. Eating seasonally is about eating the right foods at the right time – a crisp salad when the weather’s warm, a wholesome stew when it’s cold, strawberries in June, Brussels sprouts in December. Not only would strawberries look out of place on the Christmas table but they would cost a lot more too. Buying seasonally can be as much as a third cheaper than food bought out of season. Seasonal food is often locally sourced which guarantees a shorter time to reach your kitchen and maximizes the nutritional benefit. When food is left to ripen on the plant, it contains more nutrients, which makes it naturally stronger and more resistant to disease. Eating ripe food close to home reduces the need to source food from overseas,
ultimately reducing food miles and making it better for the environment. The alternative is force-grown fruit and vegetables that are produced in artificial conditions, requiring fertilisers and resulting in watery, flavourless produce. Out of season produce may have been picked six or more weeks before you buy and flown around the world to reach you, losing nutritional value, taste and quality. The London Marathon
T
he 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon takes place on Sunday 24th April. First held on 29th March 1981 with just 6,255 participants crossing the finishing line, the event now holds the Guinness World Record for being the largest annual fund raising event in the world, and has raised over £450 million for charity since it started. The race was founded by former Olympic champion Chris Brasher, and athlete John Disley. After competing in the New York City Marathon in November 1979, Brasher felt inspired to organise

a similar event in Britain that could bring together people of all races, creeds and backgrounds in a joyful way. The race is set over a flat course around the River Thames, and covers a distance of 26 miles and 385 yards. Starting at three separate points it ends in The Mall alongside St James's Park. The year 2010 saw the biggest field since the race began, with 36,549 crossing the finishing line, and around 38,000 people are expected to take part this year. There are several ways to apply for a place in the race. The cheapest is by ballot entry. This is done online and last year applications took place over a five day period a week after the marathon was run. It costs around £35 to enter, and organisers expect nearly a quarter of a million people to apply this year, but only 50,000 will be successful, and it is predicted that 12,000 people will drop out. The fee can be paid at time of application or later, but if unsuccessful the fee will be forfeited. If you are not one of the lucky ones, the next option is via a charity. The Marathon website

Successful applicants are likely to be selected according to their connection with the charity and the amount of money they have pledged to raise. Entry can cost up to ÂŁ100 and you may be expected to raise a four figure sum! Other admission methods include Good-For-Age Entry, available to previous entrants who have completed the race within a specified time for their age, and British Athletics Clubs can apply for entries for their members. A small number of places are also offered through competitions on the Marathon's Twitter and Facebook sites. Only participants who complete the race inside eight hours receive a medal and have their finish time published in the official results. his week sees the launch of ‘One You’ – a ground-breaking new campaign to help adults across the country avoid poor health caused by modern day life and remain healthy in later life. The new campaign, from Public Health England, will help adults in Bedford Borough to move more, eat well, drink less and be smoke free. One You will also provide information on how people can reduce their stress levels and sleep better. As part of the campaign, people are being encouraged to take a quick and easy online test called ‘How Are You’ to help see how healthy they really are.

The quiz provides personalised recommendations and directs people to tools and advice to help them take action where it’s most needed. Dog owners warned of changes to law
D
og owners are being advised by Bedford Borough Council to make sure they have their pet microchipped before a new law comes into force. All dogs in England will need to be microchipped from 6 April 2016. Under the Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015 it will be a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped and their details kept up to date. Once a dog is fitted with a microchip, their owners will have the peace of mind that should their dog be lost or stolen, they can be identified and returned home quickly.
Microchipping also has a number of other welfare benefits, including: • Ensures rapid return of lost/stray dogs to their owners by local authorities • Puppies are traceable to their breeder thereby helping reduce the problem of puppy farming and lessening the incidence of infectious disease and inherited defects from which many of these dogs suffer • Allows identification of dogs in properties in emergency situations so that dogs and owners can be moved and reunited more quickly

MEET THE ANCESTORS - PART 1
Have you ever wondered where you came from? No, I’m not standing in for your parents here. I mean have you ever wondered about your ancestors? You might know who your parents and grandparents are, but have you ever delved further back? Found out what your Great, Great Grandparents were doing in the Victorian Era, or even further back than that? Did your people arrive with the Vikings? Or the Normans? Or have they been hanging around the old homenation for millennia? Here’s a rough guide to how you can begin to find out your family’s roots. It’s an increasingly popular pastime nowadays to try and find out so, over the last few weeks my wife and I decided to give it a go. There are many websites out there to help you, but two that I looked into were findmypast.com and ancestry.co.uk, and it was the latter that I opted to try out. As they offer a 14-day free trial, there really is nothing to lose. You do have to register with your credit card number but, as long as you remember to close the account before the 2 weeks are up, there is no charge and you
can opt to pay-per-month to continue if, like many people, you want to discover more. In my opinion, it’s definitely worth a bit of research, so here’s what to do: First of all, and preferably before you log on to any websites at all, speak to your family. Find out as much as possible from them, and start to draft out a family tree as far as you can. If you can sit and ask your grandparents about their grandparents you have the best possible start as, for reasons that I will later explain, the first hundred years back are the hardest to find on the website. The more details you can get on names, dates and places the better and it is often surprising how far you can get back, just over a few cups of tea and the odd bit of cake with the elder family members. Once you have this information all written out, you can start to look on the Internet. Basically, once you log on, you start with a search box where you put in what you know about an individual like their name, when they were born, married or died, and what county you think they lived in. The search engine will trawl through the archive database (in a matter of seconds) and offer you a list of matches from census records, births, marriages and deaths, parish records (once you get back a bit), service records and many other archives. The Census records are one of the best sources of information but are the reason why the first hundred years can be tricky. As Census information is confidential, it is kept under government secrecy for 100 years so you need to trace a handful of branches of you family tree back until they feature on the 1911 Census. This has loads of detail about where people lived, who lived there, their ages, occupations and where they were born. The next century back, through the 1800’s, is where you can find out loads about your hardworking, privileged, poor or possibly more wayward predecessors. We will look into this next week as this is where you really learn to use the tools at your disposal… Guy Bolton

M L I F REVIEW London Has Fallen The President of America Ben Asher (Aaron Eckhart) and his trusty secret service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) are back for another action packed, bullets flying, car chasing, stunt filled adventure. Olympus Has Fallen wasn’t a film you would have imagined there being a sequel to, as enjoyable as it was, but here we are three years later following Asher and Banning as they come to London, along with many other heads of state, for the funeral of the British Prime minister. So many top politicians in one place is too much for a terrorist organisation to ignore and they hatch a plan to take them all out and bring the western world into chaos. London Has Fallen is a mindless action thriller that really and truly makes little sense when you start thinking about it, the thing is though while you are watching it you don’t get time to think as it barrels along at 100 miles an hour throwing you, the president and Banning into danger at every turn. It doesn’t stop for a minute and is all the more fun because it doesn’t try and be an intelligent film, or try and put some kind of point across. Is it a great film? No. Is it a thoroughly enjoyable film? YES!

The Brickhill Book Bug reviews… The Followers by Rebecca Wait When Stephanie meets Nathaniel she can’t believe she’s found someone who loves her so much. A single mother working in a coffee shop, almost straight away their relationship becomes the centre of her life and Nathaniel tells her he wants her to come and live with him on the moors. THE BROWNTAIL MOTH (Euproctis chrysorrhoea) The Brown Tail Moth was first reported as a pest species in 1720. Since then the numbers of the insect have fluctuated irregularly with epidemics occurring in urban and sub-urban areas. Since 1986 the moth has declined dramatically and is, at present, of only local importance as a public health threat. Adults emerge in July and mate. Both sexes have bright white wings with a brown body, slight differences being females also have a bulbous mass of brown hairs (hence brown-tail) on the tip of the abdomen. Eggs, (50-500), are laid in August in a single batch, 1-3cm long, on a twig or the underside of a leaf, covered with a thick mat of brown hairs. Caterpillars, up to 40mm long, hatch about a week later and feed on the upper leaf surface until leaf fall. These are at first highly gregarious, dark brown with two small orange/red spots at the end of the abdomen. During this period, they
construct a conspicuous small white silk tent, which is usually found on an exposed branch of the food plant. 50-2000 individuals overwinter in each tent. In spring the larvae are less gregarious, much brighter in colour, covered in light brown hairs with two white lines of hair tufts on their backs. After feeding on new growth they construct large white silk tents.
Brown-tail moths cause two problems
1. Larvae carry minute barbed hairs which can cause severe skin and eye irritation. One large larva may carry up to 2 million hairs. In severe cases medical help should be sought. 2. On re-emerging in the spring the larvae eat the buds and young leaves of most deciduous, (especially Rosaceous) trees and shrubs, causing complete defoliation in a matter of days or weeks depending on the density of the caterpillar population. They then disperse to find a new food source. Control can be by either spraying the trees in the spring or summer or through physical nest removals in the winter.

igging is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly forked in. It gives the plants a boost and builds up the levels of beneficial soil bacteria. Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller

clumps. These can be used to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs! Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry. I spread a good 3 inch / 8cm layer of mulch around my border, between the plants. Choose from well-rotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds! If you haven’t already done so give your roses a prune taking care to remove any dead or diseased stems completely.

Plant a container-grown shrub. Soak the compost for an hour before planting. Make sure the rootball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Check to shrub is suitable for the site. Dig a hole that is larger than the rootball. Work well-rotted garden-compost or planting mixture into the bottom of the hole and mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub o that the top of the rootball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top. Bedford Blues With the Greene King IPA Championship nearing its conclusion, Bedford Blues will be doing everything that they can to try and seal a top four finish and a spot in the play-offs. But they need your help!

he Eagles erased the awful memory of the 3-0 loss to Godalming, by beating playoff hopefuls, Aylesbury FC 1-0 at the Eyrie on 13th Feb, with an Ollie Peters headed goal in the 1st half. Later that evening, the club hosted a successful Racing Night. A week later, the side crossed Bedfordshire to take on Leighton Town. Josh Beech scored a 1st half goal to put the Eagles in front, but Leighton eventually claimed a draw when ex-Eagle, James Hatch, equalised. The game was marred by the awful leg injury sustained by Serigne Mor Diop. Luckily no bones were broken, although he did receive a nasty gash on the shin that required a lot of stitches. The last game of February saw Northwood come to Bedford, then return back to Middlesex after beating the Eagles 3-1, continuing their unbeaten run on the road. Nathan Hilaire was Bedford’s scorer. Bedford started March with a 2-1 defeat at Petersfield Town. 2-0 down at half time, Bedford dominated the 2nd half on a ‘ploughed field’ of a pitch, and despite popping in two goals, only one counted, and went to James Peters. On Saturday 12th March, the Eagles drew 1-1 at home to Potters Bar Town. Jack Goodall scored in the 87th minute, but a penalty to the visitors, in stoppage time, denied a win for Bedford. It feels as though the season started only recently, and yet there are only eight more league games to go. On Easter Monday (28th March), Bedford play host to St Ives Town at the Eyrie, with a 3pm kick off.
