CHARITY

Keech Hospice Care Keech Hospice Care is Bedfordshire’s children’s hospice and supports very sick children and their families. Rebecca Eastwick, Keech Hospice Care’s fundraiser for North Beds told Beds Local Magazine how the charity is much more than just a brick building in Luton. “Every day, Keech Hospice Care’s specially trained nurses are caring for children with lifelimiting illnesses in schools, hospitals and homes all across Bedfordshire. Not only do we support the child but Mum and Dad, siblings, and wider family and friends to help make their lives easier. Our nurses talk to families about all the different services Keech Hospice Care can offer them such as music, play and art therapy. They also support parents at meetings to get the care their child so desperately needs and help exhausted and worried mums and dads learn to cope better and look after their child who has very complex needs. You have to remember, looking after a sick child is tiring and your life often isn’t your own. Many people are shocked to discover Keech Hospice Care is a charity. We depend on 70% of our funding to come from our local community for our survival so no Bedfordshire child and their family are left to face a life-limiting illness

4

alone. So how can you have fun whilst fundraising for Keech? If you fancy running the 2017 London Marathon, mountain climbing, trekking in India or cycling in Ride London, Keech Hospice Care definitely has the right challenge for you. Or how about being part of our Colour Dash 5k on the 17 July 2016? Come and see Keech Hospice Care for yourself at our annual KeechFest open day on 11 September. 2016 and enjoy food, live entertainment and see how Keech is a hospice full of life.” For more information about Keech Hospice Care, fundraising events or volunteering opportunities contact fundraising@keech.org.uk, call 01582 707940 or visit www.keech.org.uk Children’s Hospice Week – Monday 23rd May – Sunday 29th May.

COUNCIL NEWS Bedfordshire Archives secures national accreditation

Have your say to boos the local economy

R

esidents and businesses in Bedford Borough are being urged to have their say on a draft blueprint for economic growth to ensure that it reflects local needs and priorities.

T

he Bedfordshire Archives & Records Service has been awarded Archive Service Accreditation.

Accreditation is the UK quality standard which recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery. Bedfordshire Archives Service is the oldest county record office in the country. Established in 1913 it collects, preserves and makes available to the public the documentary heritage for the historic county of Bedfordshire.

Developed by Bedford Borough Council, the ‘Growth Plan 2016 – 2020’ focuses on five key themes that will help the area grow and prosper in the coming years. These are supporting growth of start-up and existing businesses, attracting new business to the Borough, bringing forward employment sites faster, promoting the vitality of Bedford’s town centre and supporting local people into local jobs. The consultation will run until 31 May. To view the proposals, please visit www.bedford.gov.uk/growthplan

Joint-funded by Bedford Borough Council, Central Bedfordshire Council and Luton Borough Council, the service is proud to assist the people of Bedfordshire and beyond in their understanding and enjoyment of the county. For more information on Bedfordshire Archives, visit www.bedford.gov.uk/archive

COUNCILNEWS

Final phase of Bedford western bypass is now open

T

edford Borough Council is pleased to announce that the northern section of the Bedford Western Bypass is now open (opened on 25th April).

The project will allow 1,200 new homes, including affordable dwellings, to be constructed and will also enable the creation of a new employment park providing 650 new jobs.

Motorists and residents alike can now benefit from The Great Ouse Way which helps ease congestion, reduces delays and connects the A4280 at Biddenham with the A6 at Clapham, improving the traffic infrastructure of the borough overall.

In addition to Bedford Borough Council’s own financial commitment, it also secured contributions to the scheme from The Department for Transport, The Home and Communities Agency and the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership.

The project has been delivered in partnership with contractors Breheny Civil Engineering on time and within the £18.6 million budget, the majority of which the Council was successful in winning from external sources.

Contractors Breheny Civil Engineering won the tender to construct the road, which has involved building a bridge over the busy Midland Main Line and creating a new pedestrian subway.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The new route means traffic travelling beyond Bedford from the north or south will no longer need to use the busy roads and junctions in the town, helping to ease congestion. It’s great news for the local economy as it will encourage more investment and jobs, and crucially it will simply help all road users to get into and around town.” A complete Bedford Western Bypass has featured in local and national plans for over 50 years. The first phase of the bypass, the Branston Way, links the A421 to the south west of Bedford and Kempston with the A4280 at Bromham. The Council broke the logjam blocking the final section via a successful Compulsory Purchase Order and a series of negotiations with various parties, enabling construction to begin in autumn 2014.

Wildlife conservation has been a key consideration during the works. New planting and pond areas have been introduced to support the existing ecosystem and allow it to continue to thrive. New wildflower meadows have been created over an area of 40,000m2, equivalent to the size of four football pitches. Other measures to protect local wildlife include fencing to prevent badgers straying onto the carriageway and the construction of a new artificial badger sett. A

free, local service to help resolve your customer service gripes, champion the good & expose the bad! Know your

rights!

Whether it’s a complaint that's not been taken seriously, or you don’t know where else to turn, we will try to help you. You could be sick of chasing information, waiting for an order or refund long overdue, disappointed in a restaurant or haircut or aghast at how much you’ve been wrongly billed or badly treated. For example, did you know that thousands of tumble dryers have been recalled as fire hazards and people are being told they have to pay for a replacement or worse, wait months for an engineer to come out. So our most recent campaign has been to push for justice as we believe all tumble dryers should be replaced at no cost to the consumer and that you cannot take such irrational risks with human life and property. Do register your machine at http://www. soapboxshout.com/post/left-high-and-dry-byyour-tumble-dryer-manufacturer-and-retailer if you're one of those affected.

How does Soapbox help resolve customer service issues?

Once you’ve posted on our site at www. soapboxshout.com, our team escalates your complaint to get some action working with the regulators where necessary. We also promote your story on social media empowering each individual to get their voice heard and rights as a consumer respected. Our platform promotes transparency, keeping an audit trail so nothing is lost.

8

But what happens if the organisation doesn’t respond?

We give the company time to respond, respecting their “response time”. But when we are merely fobbed off either with corporate jargon, or worse, blatant disregard, then the company is named and shamed with the appropriate “Fobbed Off” status. This means that at least others can be warned before spending their hard earned cash or precious time to end up being let down.

Championing the good

Happily we’re able to resolve many issues quickly. We love to champion the companies that do care enough to put things right & change perceptions. We love to hear praise too so do give credit where due.

Who’s behind Soapbox?

This time two years ago my friends and I found ourselves yet again bemoaning the injustices and frustrations of unrepentant bad service (more apparent now than ever since I had a young child & less time to waste chasing down rabbit holes). So began our quest to improve things. We’ve been amazed at the response since then. Running this service in our free time is keeping us busy but it’s exciting. Who knows where it will lead? For now we’re going with the flow. Being very local, we thought you’d want to know WE’RE HERE TO HELP especially with anything that’s likely to be close to our hearts & location! :) Like us on Facebook & do follow us on Twitter & help spread the word! Aid: is our 0.7% worth it?

I

am very conscious that a number of my constituents are concerned about issues regarding foreign aid and recently my colleague, the Secretary of State for International Development has set out the facts of our overseas aid programme and I am always happy to talk to constituents about these issues. UK aid is spent where it is most needed and it is subject to rigorous internal and external checks and scrutiny. The strategy recognises that tackling poverty overseas means tackling the root causes of global problems such as disease, corruption, migration and terrorism. The Department for International Development (DFID) is the UK’s primary channel for overseas aid, working in conjunction with other Government departments and agencies. The Government has realigned the UK’s aid strategy, working to ensure that aid spending is firmly in the UK’s national interest. Alongside an increased defence budget and the UK’s world class diplomatic service, our aid programme is helping to create a more prosperous and stable world in which the UK can stand tall and flourish. Since 2012 the department has radically overhauled, tightening procurement processes and introducing strict new ministerial controls on how it awards contracts, alongside a tough new code of conduct which has delivered

10

results including £500 million of savings. The Government will invest more to tackle the causes of instability, insecurity and conflict and to tackle crime and corruption. DFID is already working with the Metropolitan Police, National Crime Agency and HMRC to recover funds stolen from developing countries and to help countries build proper tax systems and robust institutions so they can stand on their own two feet. Ah but what about the despots I hear some of you saying? The answer: there is still more work to do continuing to ensure that funds continue to only go through agencies that are reputable, do not go directly to Governments and get to the people that really need assistance. We are honouring our promise to spend 0.7 per cent of Gross National Income on International Development, to keep aid untied and to promote the rule of law and accountable institutions. Over the last five years, UK aid has been life-changing, helping more than 60 million people get access to clean water, better sanitation and improved hygiene conditions. We do not live in a perfect world, but I believe our commitment to others who do not have the advantages of living in our leafy part of Bedfordshire should be a solid one. The Bathroom Company ideal place to experiment with colours you might not feel so brave using in other rooms. Tiles are the obvious choice for bathrooms and the ranges available now are vast and varied.

T

he bathroom: it may often be the smallest room in the house, but that doesn’t mean it can’t pack a big punch in the style stakes. If you’re wondering where to start with planning your new bathroom, first think about your choice of style. Whether you want to design a busy, multi-tasking, family bathroom, or a tiny under stairs cloakroom, there is plenty of inspiration to be found. Recent trends have included hotel and spa luxury, nautical, vintage classic, and the bright, intricate colours and patterns of Morocco. A quick look at Pinterest or a flick through a home improvement magazine will quickly uncover a huge array of style inspiration.

So, with a style in mind, it’s time to turn thoughts to the vital components: sanitaryware. Again, the options are limitless – from eye-catching freestanding baths to stylish built-in furniture systems which make for clean lines and great storage options, to clever space savers like cloakroom WCs with a built in sink. There’s nothing like seeing, touching, and getting a real feel for bathroom furniture, so it’s always worth visiting a showroom. The Bathroom Company in Bedford is the perfect place to visit – packed full of styles to suit any space, and staff who really know their beans (or basins!) on hand to help with all aspects of your new bathroom. From taps and showers to towel rails and built-in furniture, we have something to suit everyone and every size – and don’t miss our fantastic range of showers and enclosures, all on display for you to walk into so you really get a feel for what your dream bathroom could look like. Local Independent Funeral Director wins prestigious Customer Service Award

L

ocal independent Funeral Directors, Molyneux Jones, have been awarded with a prestigious, national award for Customer Service after being praised by people in the area who bought a prepaid funeral plan from them during last year. Mr Malcolm Jones at Molyneux Jones, received the 2015 Customer Service Award following responses to a customer survey conducted by Funeral Planning Services, the company who provides administrative and investment services associated with prepaid funeral plans. Plan buyers who responded to the questionnaire said they felt Mr Malcolm Jones, provided them with a helpful and informative service which made making arrangements easy and provided

peace of mind that final wishes were set out clearly and paid for. Loved ones would not be burdened with having to make decisions at a difficult time, or have to worry about unexpected financial costs when the time came. Pre-paid funeral plans – whereby funeral arrangements can be made and paid for at today’s prices, however many years pass by before that funeral needs to take place – are an increasingly welcome way to invest at today’s prices and avoid the difficulties associated with quickly rising funeral service costs. MARK RUTHERFORD IS A GOOD SCHOOL On Thursday 3rd March Ofsted arrived to inspect the School – we were already ‘Good’ so we qualified for a short inspection. It was a successful day and they were able to gather all the evidence they needed to confirm, in one day, that we are still a ‘Good’ school. The HMI also indicated that if this had been a full inspection, our Sixth Form provision could have been rated ‘Outstanding’. The ‘Good’ outcome from our inspection supports all of the hard work and commitment that staff, students, parents and all of our stakeholders have put into the School. Thank you to all the staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure the School continues to improve and develop, to all the parents for your continued support and all the students for their hard work and positive attitudes. WE ARE BUILDING ON THIS SUCCESS WITH A CONTINUING COMMITMENT TO HIGH STANDARDS, POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS AND STRONG WORKING PARTNERSHIPS.

The inspection team were also very impressed with the behaviour of our students, “pupils behave very well in lessons and around the school… Pupils’ attitudes to their learning are very positive, and they enjoy positive relationships with teachers. This means lessons are calm and productive. Pupils work hard”

“The Sixth Form thrives in a very positive learning environment” “Sixth formers have a high profile in the School. Many take on mentoring roles and recognise the importance of supporting younger pupils…Sixth formers were very positive about the guidance they receive, and about the School on the whole; one described it as being ‘like a family – a very happy family’” SIXTH FORM PLACES FOR SEPTEMBER 2016 ARE AVAILABLE

Eat in season t h is M a y

Spring marks the transition from winter to summer, bringing with it inspirational new season produce and making eating local and seasonal remarkably easy. Sandy Boyd from Summerhill Farm Shops in Cardington gives us his tips on what to eat this May. Dishes are lighter and packed full of freshness and there’s nothing quite like the extra flavour, crunch and juiciness you get from in-season fruit and vegetables. May is the time for flavour filled crunchy green salads with juicy peas, mange tout and broad beans. Enjoy radishes, rocket, watercress, mint, fennel and artichokes for extra flavour and freshness. It’s also the time to say goodbye to the hearty root vegetable purees of winter and hello to lighter, fresher and versatile spring vegetable soups. Capture the freshness of young seasonal veg and herbs including parsley, tarragon and

basil. Add white beans and fresh tomatoes to create simple and traditional spring soups full of flavour. Or go green with a lovely, leafy spinach recipe for an intriguing bright-green soup. Britain also has the best asparagus in the world, and May is when it really comes into season, however, it has a very short window. Miss it and you'll end up eating asparagus with much less flavour. New potatoes are at their peak, served simply seasoned as a side along with steamed al dente asparagus as the perfect accompaniments to succulent spring lamb, which is also at its best. May is also the start of strawberry season (hurrah!) so it's time to tuck into delicious summer desserts such as the traditional Eton Mess. Visit us in Cardington, Bedford for fresh local and seasonal fruit and vegetables, locally reared meat and artisan produce. www.summerhillfarmshop.co.uk

Moles Moles are small coloured spots on the skin, most often brownish in colour, which can be flat or raised, rough or smooth and circular or oval with a smooth edge. Some moles are present at birth but most develop during the first thirty years of life, with fair skinned people having more moles than those with darker skin. Most moles are completely harmless and it is common for them to change in number and appearance. However, in rare cases they can develop into melanoma – a serious and aggressive form of skin cancer.

Melanomas usually appear as a dark, fastgrowing spot that was not there before, or as a pre-existing mole that changes shape, size or colour and bleeds, itches or reddens. You should check your skin every few months for new moles that develop (especially after the teenage years) and for changes to existing moles. These are things to look for: Moles with uneven colouring or lots of different shades Moles with an uneven or ragged edge Bleeding, itchy, red, inflamed or crusty moles Moles which grow – particularly if they are more than 0.5cm diameter (about the width of the end of a pencil). If you are concerned about any of the above, visit your GP immediately. The main treatment for melanoma is surgery, and if diagnosed and treated early, it is usually successful. MEET THE ANCESTORS - PART 2 Last month we looked at how to get your family tree started by asking the family and logging on to one of the many available websites to start your researching. The key was to get a few links back into the 1911 Census where the information really starts to flow‌ Once you have found the old gang on the 1911 Census, you should have the details of the parents within the turn-of-the-century family, and

40

you can then find them on the 1901 Census. You know it’s the same bunch, as everyone who was over ten in 1911 will obviously still be found here but a decade younger. They may have moved home in between, but you know its them and, to make certain, you often find that Christian names are passed down through the generations. Daughters named after mothers, sons after brothers and so on. A pattern emerges here and you can happily skip back down several

Please mention BedsLocal when responding to adverts | www.bedslocalmag.co.uk

branches of your tree to the first Census taken in 1841. This will give you people born anywhere between about 1750 and 1840 and before you know where – or indeed who – you are, you will have the next 200 years in the bag! From this information alone, we managed to assemble a multitude of over two-hundred souls into our tree, and that was just on my wife’s side of the congregation. We found grocers, fishmongers, paper bag makers, carriers, labourers, painters and cab drivers, all doing their bit to keep Victoria’s Empire moving along. They reared their families and sent them out equipped to start their own families and keep the line going until they get, inevitably and inexorably, to our generation. Now, alas, it starts to get a little bit sticky again. The earliest Census of all the people in the land (other than the great Domesday Book assembled by William the Conqueror around 1086) was the one in 1841. A few short years before this in 1837 was when the national records of births, marriages and deaths were first kept in a single, national archive. Prior to this, all the records were kept at a local Parish level, usually by the Church of the villages and towns, so the whole search splits all over the country. Luckily for us budding amateur sleuths, this stuff is all on the database as well.

At this stage, the easiest lines are often people you have traced back to small rural communities where two persons of the same name were rare (other than a father and son). Parish records on the website can only give basic details like names, christening dates and the names of parents but, in a small community, this is often enough to keep going back in an unbroken line. Some people disappear rather frustratingly, but you often find them in a nearby village. People moved around less in those days, but you can still lose track of them. Obviously, they must be somewhere as if the line gets broken, you wouldn’t be here to moan about it! We will look into this part of history more in next month’s concluding part of the saga, but having shot a direct line straight through the census era, it is well worth investigating other family members that you may come across. Often you find indirect links to people you wouldn’t expect to be related to, and maybe a few connections to the rich and famous! Due to the size of our population and the island we inhabit, many of us will have a tiny drop of Shakespeare’s blood in our veins, or William the Conqueror, or even the legendary King Arthur, possibly the venerable Bede after whom our County is named… Guy Bolton

M L I F REVIEW Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice The Dark Knight versus The Man of Steel! DC comics begin their attempt to counter the absolutely stunning success their long term adversaries Marvel Comics have managed with their cinematic universe. Batman vs Superman though is nothing like the fun, almost light-hearted romps of previous superhero movies. It is dark, very dark and could be argued doesn’t show their heroes in a very heroic light. Batman really is a dark, brooding avenger and Superman is, well Superman is a jerk, he really is! This movie has been slammed, badly, but is nowhere near as bad as everyone seems to be determined to paint it. It has a lot of problems, the way Superman is characterised, the jumps in the story, the portrayal of Lex Luthor amongst many, but as a superhero action blockbuster it gives you a lot of what you would want to see as well. It has terrifically stage fights, it has a Batman who is a Dark Avenger, it introduces more heroes and has some interesting ideas. The thing is though is that it is too late, Marvel movies have raised the bar for superhero movies and this doesn’t match up against most of their movies. Simon White

The Brickhill Book Bug reviews… A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler Abby and Red Whitshank are getting older and looking forward to a good old age surrounded by their children and grandchildren in the house Red’s father built when he first came to Baltimore. Sitting on the porch with her family around her Abby tells the story of when she and Red first met, repeating a familiar family story all the children know by heart. Anne Tyler skilfully creates for us an ordinary all American family and yet, as with most families, all is not entirely as it seems. What has their eldest son Denny been doing away from home all these years? Who is the mother of their adopted son Stem? How did Red’s parents manage to end up with such an elegant house and why did they come to Baltimore in the first place? All family stories change, with certainties written in and the unacceptable written out, and the Whitshanks story reminds us that noone can be really sure of the past. From Junior and Linnie, through Red and Abby, to the children of Denny, Amanda, Jeannie and Stem we glimpse a small part of American history being created and, quietly, rewriting itself just a little bit. For more information about books and reading, visit the Virtual Library at www.bedford.gov.uk/libraries. The Book Bug has worked for the library service in Bedfordshire for 20 years. She lives in Brickhill with far too many books!

The Vulnerable Horse Chestnut

Before

The Horse Chestnut is a very majestic and iconic tree, found in many places throughout Britain including gardens, parks, school grounds and churchyards. The immediate threat to the Horse Chestnut is attack from Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner which pose’s a real threat to the survival of this beautiful, iconic tree which for many generations has been a favorite with children and adults for the Conkers it produces.

After

Leaf Miner (Cameria ohridella)

The Leaf Miner arrived in the UK about 8-9 years ago, the caterpillar feeds within the leaves causing distinct translucent tunnels on the upper surface which eventually form brown dead patches, giving the tree an autumnal appearance by July and resulting in early leaf fall. Recent evidence indicates that this insect can cause smaller trees to die while, the reduced photosynthetic ability may affect growth, and the cumulative loss in stored food products may compromise long-term health of mature trees. Control of the Leaf Miner can be performed with several varying options.

GARDENING

Tim Brown 01234 354673 bedford@bartlettuk.com www.bartlett.com

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

I

'm a huge fan of biological warfare. But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I'm really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners.

Bring on the biological warfare!

52

Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don't be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters. Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses. The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based

GARDENING on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%.

area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants.

Frogs and toads are great slug-eaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground.

Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips.

Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself. The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem

All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment. Of course with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful... By Rachael Leverton

Bedford Blues Bedford Blues season has been extended into May as they sealed a top four finish in the Greene King IPA Championship and now face a two-legged semifinal against Bristol. The Blues have experienced an exceptional season particularly when you consider that they finished tenth last season and ninth the year before. The turnaround on the pitch has been clear for all to see with the current squad playing exciting, free-flowing rugby that truly exemplifies the Bedford Blues mantra. The challenge ahead is huge in the form of Bristol who have been at the top of the Championship table for the majority of the season. However, Bedford sealed an opening day victory over Andy Robinson’s men before toppling them again at Goldington Road in the British & Irish Cup back in December. The two teams also faced off in the final league game of the season meaning that will have played one another six times by the time the season finally finishes.

SPORT

Bedford’s home game is the first leg of the playoff semi-final which kicks off at 3.15 on Sunday 1st May with the return fixture taking place the following Sunday. Should the Blues overcome Bristol, then a two-legged final is scheduled with the prize on offer being a spot in the Aviva Premiership. You can buy discounted tickets for the semifinal fixture against Bristol by visiting www. bedfordrugby.co.uk and clicking on tickets. With the end of the season nearing, Bedford Blues will be saying goodbye to two stalwarts – James Pritchard and Phil Boulton – who are both moving on to National One side Coventry. Pritchard, 36, or Skippy as he is known, is the Blues all-time leading point scorer and celebrated his testimonial with the club last season having been a key figure at Goldington Road for more than a decade. Boulton, 29, first stepped through the Goldington Road gates in the summer of 2008 and he has gone on to be one of the most consistent performers for Bedford Blues ever since. Everyone connected to the club wishes them both the very best of luck!

Bedford Town FC T

he Eagles are just about at the end of their season, with just two games to go at the time of writing. Saturday 16th April sees the last home game (Chalfont St. Peter at 3pm), and the last game, on St. George’s Day, Bedford finish the season at Beaconsfield SYCOB. Through March, the Eagles went on a mini unbeaten run. included in this run was their best performance of the season, a 4-1 away win at 2nd placed Egham Town, a 0-0 draw at home to league leaders, Royston Town, and another home draw against playoff hopefuls, St. Ives Town. The run came to an end on 9th April with a disappointing 2-0 defeat at lowly Uxbridge. To quote Jimmy Greaves, It’s a funny old game! Off the field, the next quiz night is on 27th May. Teams can be up to six people. The fun starts at 7.30pm and the cost is £6 per head. 11th June sees a Euro 2016 fun night, and there will be more details to follow. Both events will be in the Bedford Town clubhouse. On Saturday 16th July, we will be playing a strong Luton Town side at the Eyrie. Kick off is 3pm. All information, throughout the year, will be posted on www.bedfordeagles.net @bedfordtown on Twitter and Bedford Town FC on Facebook. There was sad news early in April, when we heard of the passing of stalwart, Pat Allen. Pat was known to everyone at Bedford, and he gave up a lot of his time for the club. He will be fondly remembered for his work with the reserves and youth setup. The many messages seen on Facebook and Twitter from former players at Bedford, show how much he was loved.
