Spring 2022

President’s Message

A

s we say good-bye to 2021 and look forward to a fresh start in 2022, I can’t help but be positive and believe that this year will have better days ahead. We as a society definitely deserve it, and as a person who is a “glass is half full” kind of guy, I have to believe it will be, and am going to do my best to focus on the positive things going on in our business for my reports. Golf courses once again had a great year in 2021, with many facilities reporting record rounds played. The BCGSA has also seen its highest numbers ever, with over 400 current active members. Thank you all for your continued support on being a part of our growing association, and helping us continue to improve on what we can offer our members in the years to come. We were fortunate to be able to once again host the Professional Development Days in Victoria in November. Attendance was strong, even though there were several

last minute cancellations due to travel restrictions, mainly due to the floods the province suffered. Many still made the trip and enjoyed getting back to seeing each other in person. The speaker line -up was outstanding, and we were once again able to raise some money for M.S. A big shout out to all those who made the event happen, our events committee, our incredible volunteer Dena Gent, our delegates, our M.C. Miranda Robinson who did an amazing job, and last but most importantly, our industr y sponsors who make this event possible! I would also like to recognize Mr. Tom Altmann, who had to resign from the board as he moves on to a new career outside of our industr y. Tom spent nine years on the BCGSA Board as our Kootenay Representative, and was always a voice of reason and compassion at our meetings. When Tom informed me he was stepping down, he said his only regret was that he didn’t volunteer sooner, as he truly enjoyed his time on the board and the relationships he built within our industr y. Thank you for your ser vice Tom, and we wish you and your family all the best with your new career, and look for ward to seeing you at the next Exchange event in the Kootenays. It’s also been another year of success for some of our BCGSA

The British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association is a society to promote and support the Golf Course Management profession in British Columbia. member ’s as they are being recognized at the National level through awards handed out by the CGSA for 2021. On behalf of our provincial board and all our members, I’d like to congratulate the following members for their accomplishments and dedication to their facilities and their profession. Dean Piller, winner of the CGSA/ Gord Witteveen Award for best Article, Paul Davey, winner of the CGSA/Toro Assistant Superintendent of the Year, and Keith Lyall for winning the CGSA/Rainbird Environmental Achievement Award. Well done gentlemen! Wishing you all a great spring and 2022 season! Respectfully submitted, Warren Blue, BCGSA President 5

WCTA: On behalf of the WC TA Board and staff, we appreciate your continued involvement and confidence in our efforts to support tur f management professionals in western Canada. This summary report reflects accomplishments and industr y activities over the past 12 months, and the impact of the ongoing pandemic on our membership and the association itself. Summar y: • WC TA Online Trade Show & Unprecedented Presentations, or ‘ WOTS-UP!’ This event was built around and greatly expanded upon the originally scheduled Feb 11 WOW series webinar and was designed to include multiple ‘hardcore education’ speakers - 187 delegates, 64 supplier personnel and 7 speakers participated in WOTS-UP for a total attendance of 258 people including 94 WC TA members attending the AGM. Financially, the virtual show didn’t come close to a live show however we netted about $10k which went a long way to reducing losses for the year. • WHOA or the WC TA Hub for Online Auctions, also took place during the virtual show, replacing our annul Silent Auction and raising $5387 for tur f research. Again, not what a live show does but a ver y significant amount of money supporting research during a very difficult time to fundraise. • Cam Watt, our new President, announced his departure from the industry and Gary Bartley from UBC Athletics took on the role with Stu Carmichael from the City of Courtenay filling the position of Vice President. On behalf of the entire membership, we thank Cam for his volunteer efforts over the years and wish him the best of success in his new career. • Fundraising for the Canadian Tur f Research Foundation and began the process of community grant applications and created an information brochure designed to reach about 100 tur f related amateur sport and industr y organizations across Canada.

together an excellent event on October 8 at Mayfair Lakes Golf Course in Richmond. 100 participants enjoyed great golf, games and prizes - $7,700 was raised for student awards and tur f research! • New WorksafeBC regulations came into force, many effecting the tur f management industr y including: - Part 6, Restricted inter vals for pesticide application - Part 8, High visibility apparel - Part 8, Safety headgear - Part 16, Mobile equipment • September 30th is our fiscal year-end. I’m ver y pleased to report another strong year with 696 current members and a record year for dues revenue. Timing could not be better as the expected loss without the usual conference revenue was significantly reduced by better than expected dues per formance. • 59th Annual WC TA Conference and Trade Show – Februar y 16-19, 2022 at the Penticton Lakeside Resort. Thanks to all WC TA members for your unwavering support over the past couple years! Tuesday ’s program began with Miranda Robinson addressing the group, welcoming and introducing our Title Sponsor of the Day, Josey Groeneveld of “Bayer ”

As a physician with a particular interest in skin cancer, Dr. Wiese is a firm believer that "prevention is better than cure." Having worked as a family physician for over a decade, Dr. Wiese's approach is more proactive than reactive. Rather than look at a sporadic skin lesion, he takes the time to look over the body's fastest-growing organ - the skin. His aim is to be a true expert in the field of skin cancer and dermoscopy. Ultimately, Dr. Wiese hopes to contribute to skin cancer awareness through research, teaching, and being a strong advocate for prevention. For more information and a follow-up of Dr. Wiese’s presentation please see his article posted earlier in this issue of the DogWood.

Dr. Ben Wiese “ What is the big fuss over skin cancer?” Based in Kelowna, Dr. Ben Wiese is a dedicated primary care skin cancer physician. Dr. Wiese studied in South Africa at the University of Pretoria, where he received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. In 2010, Dr. Wiese and his wife, Dr. Lize opened up a family practice in Kelowna. In 2014, he began taking dermoscopy and primar y care skin cancer courses at the Universities of Cardiff and Queensland. Upon completing his studies, he decided to open up his services due to the high demand. He began treating and managing high-risk patients with skin cancer. In 2021, Dr. Ben achieved his Master's degree in skin cancer from the University of Queensland in Australia. 20

Following Dr.Wiese’s presentation, Susan Hite returned to go over the Shape assessment with the delegates.

The DogWood Dr. Ben Wiese Speaks on Skin Cancer Prevention

“What is the big fuss? It is, after all, JUST skin cancer, and we all know someone who has had it!”

kind of physician. I would be more proactive in my approach to medicine. I wouldn’t become a part of the reactive norm.

The big fuss is that one person dies from skin cancer ever y hour in North America. Despite the fact that more than 80,000 Canadians are diagnosed with skin cancer every single year, wide -spread attention is not given to simple methods of prevention. Melanoma has also become the most common type of cancer for youth between the ages of 15 to 29. So, do I have your attention now?

I am Dr. Ben Wiese. My wife, Dr. Lize Wiese, and I are Primar y Care Skin Cancer Physicians helping patients manage their skin cancers across British Columbia from our clinic in Kelowna. We are strong advocates for prevention and work ever y single day to create skin cancer awareness throughout Canada.

I was only 18 when my Dad was diagnosed with widespread kidney cancer. That wasn’t supposed to happen. Your parents are supposed to die when you’re ready, when they ’re “old.” I can’t count the ways my life changed while supporting my Dad - extensive surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and ultimately, “Sorr y, there is nothing more that we can do.” Right then and there as a young medical student, I promised myself that I would be a different

The first question patients always ask me is usually something about sunscreen. The short answer is YES, it does work, and YES it does prevent skin cancer, but that is not the whole stor y. Your focus should be on respecting the largest organ of your body – your skin. Taking care of your skin is no exception compared to your heart, lungs, liver or brain. When you abuse any of your organs, you are not going to feel or be the best you can be. And, as an added bonus, healthy skin is beautiful skin.

Now, back to sunscreens - there are two types of sunscreens - physical sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. Physical sunscreens are made of crushed minerals that do not get absorbed into your skin. Common ingredients found in physical sunscreens would be titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, important minerals that reflect and refract UV radiation away from the skin. This type of sunscreen is for people who like the idea that nothing gets absorbed into the skin. If you’re not a fan of the white residue created by physical sunscreens, I encourage you to check out tinted sunscreens, they are a game changer. Chemical sunscreens are more commonly available and are easily absorbed by the skin. They typically will have ingredients like Oxybenzone and Avobenzone that absorb UV light. These sunscreens soak into the skin without leaving any residue. Despite speculation, there is also no medical evidence that these sunscreens cause cancer.

32

The DogWood However, when it comes to keeping yourself protected from UV exposure - clothing, specifically UPF clothing, is your best option. UPF is the UV protection rating for items of clothing. This type of clothing is specifically manufactured with minerals like zinc and titanium infused right into the fabric fibres. UPF clothing is comfortable, breathable and acts as wearable broad-spectrum sunscreen that you don’t have to reapply over and over. An average white cotton T-shirt has a UPF rating of only 5-7 while most UPF clothing have ratings of 50+. If you’re trying to remember a time you ‘burned through your shirt’ - you’re not alone. This is where the difference between UVA and UVB plays a role and should be taken into consideration, especially for children or those with a higher risk for skin cancers. UVB is the damaging UV light that causes us to get sunburn, luckily regular clothing blocks UVB out quite well. What most of us forget about is UVA light, which penetrates much deeper into the skin and can easily penetrate regular clothing and windows. UVA damages the skin’s DNA, which contributes to skin cancer formation over time. The dangers of ongoing UVA exposure makes wearing UPF clothing a comfortable and low-effort way to keep yourself safe ever y day, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors. What’s also incredibly important is knowing your personal risk for skin cancer. Are you blond, fair-skinned, and have over 50 moles? If so, visit the Kelowna Skin Cancer Clinic website and use the Melanoma risk assessment tool to get your personalized risk score.

2. Alumier EverActive Vitamin C & E Serum is a high potency topical antioxidant, protecting the skin against oxidative stress. The uniqueness of this product is that you always have a fresh, non-oxidized serum that you can activate yourself. 3. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen 30-45 SPF daily on the areas not covered by clothing. My personal preference is Alumier ’s medicalgrade Clear Shield Sunscreen, available for online order from Revive Skincare. 4. Seek the shade from 11am – 4 pm, when the UV index is highest. 5. Eat oily fish like Salmon, 2-3x per week. Supplementing with Omega oils does not help, sorr y. 6. Take Niacinamide/TruNiagen. High doses have shown to reduce the risk of skin cancer by up to 30%. TruNiagen is available for order at UVwise.com If you have anything on your skin that is new, changing, non-healing or concerning, make sure to see your family physician as soon as possible. Are you going to be part of the next 80,000 Canadians with skin cancer this year, or are you going to be the one stepping up and out for change? I know we can do it! UVwise.com is happy to offer 30% off for all BCGSA members. Use the code: BCGSA30 at checkout when purchasing any UPF 50+ clothing, accessories, skincare or vitamins.

If you are fair, with some red pigment in your hair, more than 100 freckles and/or moles or if you have a family history of skin cancer, it’s ver y likely you are considered high risk for developing skin cancer. You should: 1. Cover as much of your skin with UPF clothing as possible. We recommend clothing from Coolibar and Billabong - both are available online in styles for men, women, kids & baby from Canadian UPF clothing company UVwise. com.

The DogWood Report from the Kootenay Region

T

he Kootenay ’s will have some new faces in Superintendent roles for the 2022 golf season. Never in my 15 years of being in the Kootenay ’s have I seen four prominent individuals leave our region all at once. I am happy to report that Vic Sigailis and Al Dobbs are retiring, Tom Altmann and Colin Matheson have made career changes. I can honestly say that our chapter of the BCGSA will truly miss these guys. I thought that it would be only fitting that I profile each of them in our spring update from the Kootenays. Vic Sigailis knew at the age of 31 that the logging industry was not for him. At that time, he approached then Superintendent at the Radium Springs Course Bob Lister about future employment. Bob Lister played a significant role in mentoring Vic and eventually guiding him towards the Tur f Management Program at Fairview College. While in Fairview Vic took the Tur f Management Program along with the Tur f Technician Program. Fairview is also the place where Vic Met his wife JoAnne. JoAnne and her 3 children ended up moving to Radium to be with Vic, this once bachelor now had an instant family. In 1994 Vic took the position of Assistant Superintendent at the Radium Resort Course where he worked under Jerry Wright. After Jerry ’s departure in the summer of 2007 Vic became the Superintendent of the Resort Course, during his tenure he has survived 4 ownership changes and 7 management changes. Vic told me that looking back at his career he felt privileged to have worked at such a beautiful place. He also had the opportunity to have all 3 of his children work for him at different times which was quite rewarding for him. Vic is looking forward to his retirement years where he hopes to fill his days with fishing, camping and travel. It has been a pleasure for me and many others getting to know Vic over the years and we wish him all the best in the years to come. Cranbrook Golf Course will be looking for a new Superintendent with Al Dobbs retiring this spring. Like many Al was not always in the golf industry, before he started

34

his career he had a short stint as a Civil Engineer Consultant. The economic crash of 1984 led Al to find a temporary job at the Bearspaw Golf and Country Club working for Tod Puddicombe. That temporary job that he had led to an Assistant Superintendent position at Bearspaw from 1988-1994. In 1994 Al became the Superintendent of Woodside Golf and Country Club in Airdrie until 1998. Eagle Ranch was his next stop where he was involved in completing construction and the grow in of the golf course. After parting ways with Eagle Ranch Al moved to Cranbrook to take on a similar role at Wildstone Golf Course. After a short stop at Wildstone he made his way back home to Pincher Creek where he brought their golf club back to life with a lot of TLC. In 2013 after getting Pincher Creek headed in the right direction Al was on the move again back to the Cranbrook Golf and Country Club where he held the position of Superintendent until his retirement. Al had told me that his greatest accomplishments has been working at courses where he was able to bring them to the next level, I can attest to that. I have played the Cranbrook course many times over the years and I can say without a doubt that the members and public had an exceptionally wellmaintained golf course. He is also very proud of the friendships he has made along the way with fellow Superintendents and with all the people who have worked for him. Al tells me he is looking forward to traveling and getting in as much fly fishing as he can. Congrats Al on a great career! Colin Matheson leaves our chapter but not our area. Colin has taken a job with Invermere Fire Rescue as their Deputy Chief. Colin started his golf career at the Golden Golf Club at the age of 17. Ken Mackenzie liked to remind Colin that references were always good because he had one of the worst interview per formances to date. After Ken left Golden Colin was fortunate enough to have Darren Reddekopp to mentor him. Colin says that Darren taught him so much but one thing that Darren taught him which still sticks with him today is the people -first approach to managing. He says Darren led successful teams by having great culture, team members felt supported and they had fun which made them feel very much part of a team. Colin worked for Darren for the next 10 years and followed him to Greywolf after finishing his diploma at Fairview College.

The DogWood While at Greywolf Colin met a nursing student who eventually became his wife. Her nursing program led them to Victoria where Colin spent a few years at Olympic View Golf Course. After her program was over, they moved back to the Kootenay ’s where Colin took a job as the Assistant Superintendent at Eagle Ranch. Colin worked under Mike Warriner, Colin said that Mike was a man of few words but another great mentor. Colin stated that Mike was the most detailed, grounded and hardest working person he had ever met. After Mike fell ill and passed away Colin took on the role of Superintendent at Eagle Ranch for the next three seasons. Colin told me that Covid-19 made him re -evaluate his priorities in life and that the fire department has given him more time with his family, more security and a sense of purpose that he was missing in his life. Colin said that he will miss the golf industry and I know our region is going to miss him too. Good luck Colin in your new role! Not much needs to be said about Tom Altmann because everyone knows him and he has been around the block a few times. This sums Tom up in a nutshell and I stole this from Linkedin. “A seasoned business leader with a successful career of 30 years in "high-end" golf clubs and mountain resorts. Recognized and rewarded for entrepreneurship, business development/management, profit and vision. Proven ability to establish and implement company mission, vision, core values, promote positive culture causing increased profitability. Superior ability to build, develop and maintain teams, while communicating expectations and achieving results.” Tom tells us don’t ever hesitate to take a leap and try something new, change has allowed for my most gratifying career highlights. Tom has been at Silver Springs, Coeur d’Alene, Kananaskis, Greywolf, Tamarack and Fairmont Hot Springs. He says that the golf industry has provided him with an amazing career and most importantly lifelong friends and connections. Being on the BCGSA board was one of his most memorable highlights of his career, he was challenged in a way that made him the best he could be. Tom told me that it was time for a change by putting his family first, raising his two sons in the Columbia Valley, challenging himself and maintaining his health and happiness. Tom takes on his new role as Utilities Superintendent for the

Spring 2022

Regional District of the East Kootenays. We all wish Tom great success in his new role and he has left us with huge shoes to fill. The DogWood Report from the Vancouver Island Region

I

hope ever yone had a fun filled Christmas and New Years with friends and family! As I write this, we are forecasted to see 50mm of rain and hoping the rain melts the foot of snow that is standing on our course. 2021 was a crazy year for weather. We sur vived the heat, but unfortunately some properties could not survive the following rainfall. Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by the devastating floods. The Island chapter held a fall wind up event at Mt Brenton Golf Club on October 22nd. Thank you, Ernie Whitelaw, the agronomy team, and the board of directors for hosting us. The course was in amazing shape for the event. We played a 2-man team event. 6 holes of best ball, 6 holes of alternate shot, and finished with 6 holes of scramble. Congratulations to Jason Chanasyk and Rob Jensen for taking home the title! Well played fellas! Currie Frank and the team from Island Tractor took the time to educate those in attendance on the importance of regular maintenance. Jesse Gilles won the 50/50 draw and donated his winnings to Tim Kubash. Gregor Kowalski put forward a motion to donate the VIGSA portion of the 50/50, the motion was passed unanimously. On behalf of the board, we would like to congratulate Carter Kowalski on being the recipient of the Dave Creamer Bursary. Carter received $1,000 to

From November 21st – 23rd the BCGSA hosted the Pro Development Days at the Delta Hotel in Victoria. It was great to have ever yone back together again. Thank you to the BCGSA and the Pro Development Days Committee for putting on a great event with engaging and entertaining speakers. Those in attendance were lucky to see Brian Youell’s final presentation. As per usual, Brian took control of the room, you could hear a pin drop as he navigated us through the highs and lows of his career. At the completion of Brian’s presentation, the conference room all joined in giving Brian a standing ovation. On behalf of the VIGSA board and its members we would like to pass on our condolences to Dale Kitsul and his family. Dale lost his father, Dan Kitsul on January 7th. Dan spent most of his life in the golf industry, building and restoring well known courses across BC and Alberta. Looking into the future, the VIGSA board will be meeting in early February to plan events for 2022. Kind Regards, Matt Mamone VIGSA President

Spring 2022

Report from the Lower Mainland Region 2021 ended in much the same way the rest of the year unfolded; the weather was unpredictable and record-breaking again, creating many challenges. Record rainfall and flooding affected us all in some way. Hopefully, we all were able to push through and recover from the effects. It was great to see our industr y step up and help each other during these difficult times. Fraserglen Golf Course in Abbotsford was particularly hard hit, and many of us rallied to help repair damaged equipment and clean up the flood debris. The owners, Dave and Corrine, were very touched by our help and were thankful to all those involved. A special thank you to Peter Szarka from Redwoods for helping coordinate all of the efforts. As we begin another year, there is still the uncertainty of Covid and its effects on golf. I suspect we will still see increased traffic to our facilities since golf has had limited restrictions during the pandemic. Now is the time to recharge, gather our thoughts and plan for the upcoming season. The Lower Mainland chapter recently met to discuss several upcoming events scheduled, assuming health orders will allow them to proceed. If any members have ideas or topics they would like to be implemented this year, please reach out to any board members. I am wishing you all a great start to the 2022 season.

Report from the Interior Region

I

’m back! Due to circumstances, our Vice President, Patrick Kerr, has only been on the Interior Board for one year so therefore it was decided at our AGM that I would remain as President until our next AGM. So I guess you are stuck with me for another golf season! Our Annual Wind-Up Tournament held on October 4th, was a huge success. A lot of our members came out to signify the end of the season and to help fundraise for Tim Kubash. The weather was fantastic, the golf was excellent and the camaraderie was second to none. A big thank you to the team at Black Mountain Golf Club, the Northern Chapter for donating $2000, the industry suppliers for their continued support and all who participated by helping to raise $11,000! This money will help Tim with his Restart 2.0. Last November, the Interior Chapter ’s AGM was held at the Kelowna Golf & Country Club with Barry Evans as our host. There was a modest turnout of 21 members but we were still able to cover some important topics. We came up with a great variety of locations for this year ’s meetings, with our first one to be held at

Sun Peaks Resort & Golf Course in March. We will be visiting locations from one end of our region to the other, which will provide a great opportunity for those who haven’t yet checked out our peer ’s golf courses. Congratulations are in order for a few of our members. We had two recipients for the Vern Burnell Interior Chapter Scholarship awards Cloe Carleton and Cooper Bennett were our lucky winners. As well, Keith Lyall was honoured with the CGSA/Rainbird Environmental Achievement Award for his dedication and contributions to both our profession and to his community. Congratulations to all of you! The golf season is just around the corner and the preparations have begun. Cross your fingers that the summer heat is not too hot, the rain is not too much and that we do not have to deal with wildfires like last season. I wish ever yone good luck with your opening day and hope to see you all at the meetings this year! Respectfully Submitted Jenn Rozek BCGSA Interior Chapter President

Report from the Northern Region

O

ur days are getting longer, and warmer temperatures are on the horizon. It’s the time of year where myself, and I’m sure all the Northern Superintendents as well, are eagerly awaiting the snow to dissipate so we can see how our courses faired over the winter. Our preparations in the previous fall are always designed to give our courses the best chance at surviving whatever Mother Nature throws at us through our northern winters. Even with all of today ’s science and research no two winters are the same, so there is always an anticipation on how well our programs met the winter. Here’s hoping that when we gather in April for our spring meeting, we are all off to the same or even better start than we were for opening days last year.

Our spring meeting will be held at the Prince George Golf & Curling Club with myself as Host Superintendent. I am looking for ward to having the Super ’s and some of their team join me in person as we kick off what we hope to be another excellent year. We have two great speakers joining us for presentations, our meeting, social and golf. We have one change to our executive this year. I would like to welcome Superintendent Jeff Anderson of Hirsch Creek, Kitimat as Vice President of our Northern Chapter. Wishing ever yone the ver y best in the upcoming season. Respectfully submitted Murray Kutyn President of Nor thern BCGS A

Report from the Allied Golf Association

A

t the AGA-BC AGM last October, long time AGA-BC President and WC TA representative, Trevor Smith stepped down from the group. I would like to thank Trevor for his years of ser vice to AGA-BC and our industry. Despite the fact that Trevor and I may have had differences of opinions, I do know his heart was, and always is, in the right place as he cares about golf in BC and the Superintendent’s side of the business. Thank you Trevor.

Taking over as the WC TA representative is their immediate Past President, Trevor Olson from Kamloops Golf and Country Club. Thank you, Travis, for stepping up, I’m looking forward to collaborating with you. Also at the AGM, with Trevor stepping down, we were in need of a new President, and with no one else sticking their hand up, I volunteered to step up as one of your BCGSA’s representative for the task. Also, I wanted to mention, but many of you probably know this already, Jamie Robb from Marine Drive, after many years of service, has stepped down from AGA-BC. Thank you, Jamie, for all your hard work! Stuart Sheridan from Capilano Golf and Country Club has taken Jamie’s place as your other BCGSA representative on the AGA

board. Thank you, Stu, for stepping up and representing our group! We held our first board meeting of 2022 on Februar y 2 where a few initiatives were brought for ward. First and foremost is having NGCOA and the PGA of BC rejoin the group as it is felt that without their presence, we are not fully an allied golf association. We will be reaching out to both associations to see where things fell off and to communicate the need for their participation to ensure the success of our industr y. We are also looking at our governance in an effort to create better succession planning for the future of the association. We feel this will help maintain a progressive, for ward-thinking AGA-BC, as it will continuously bring in new board members to compliment the experienced core group we currently have. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I am excited about the future for golf in BC. The dedicated group at AGA-BC are keen to continue to work on creating positive, dynamic relationships with all our allied partners as we know it is crucial for our industr y ’s success. Respectfully submitted, Brett Finlayson 39

CGSA Report - by Ken Bruneski

W

ell it looks at last like a very long winter is coming to an end. After what seems the longest winter I’ve experienced since being in this industr y I am actually looking forward to getting my course open and getting back at it. Speaking of long, I guess that’s the amount of time I’ve been in this industr y now. Seems like only yesterday I was wet behind the ears and felt like I didn’t know anybody at events and conferences. This is a good lesson for all you young Superintendents out there, it goes quickly and before you know it you’re the veteran in the room. Make sure you take the opportunity to network as often as you can. I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve been helped through relationships I’ve made in the industr y. I know it’s tough recently with all of these restrictions but hopefully soon we will be back at it. Take in the conferences and the golf events; it’s a huge networking opportunity and believe me, you will meet some of the nicest people on the planet. Speaking of nice people, Pat Differ, a dear friend to many of us in the industry was found unconscious in his shop recently. It was determined Pat had suffered a heart attack. He was rushed to hospital where he spent a couple of weeks but as I understand Pat is expected to make a full recover y. Pat is a big contributor in our industr y and I wish him a speedy recovery. Look for ward to seeing you back on the tur f soon. Recently the CGSA announced a few significant awards prior and some of BC’s finest have once again taken home some hardware. Keith Lyall was awarded the CGSA/Rainbird Environmental Achievement Award. Keith’s bio regarding his environmental achievements include ISO 14001

certification at Sun Peaks, as well as becoming accredited in the ISO 19011 Lead Auditor ’s course and has worked on behalf of the industry as a liaison at all levels of government regarding environmental issues. Congratulations are in order for Mr. Lyall, well done sir! Paul Davey, Assistant Superintendent from Cordova Bay Golf Course was also a winner, taking home the CGSA/Toro Assistant Superintendent of the year award. As per Dean Piller, Paul’s contribution to the organization is immeasurable. Congratulations Mr. Davey! Finally, another superintendent winner from BC is Dean Piller who won the Gordon Witiveen Article of the year award for his article, Managing your Golf Course Ecosystem. Congratulations Dean on yet another award. Also a winner, but not from BC, of our most distinguished John B Steel award is Marie Thorne. Anybody who’s had the pleasure of working with Marie knows her passion for the industry is undeniable. Marie was a frequent contributor at conferences and at courses across the countr y where she spent her time delivering solutions to her clients for 37 years. Marie retired from Syngenta in 2018 but her impact on our profession is still felt today. Congratulations Ms. Thorne! The CGSA made the tough decision to go virtual again this year and the dates are March 1st – 3rd. Our conference was to be held in Januar y just as the height of Omicron came upon us. I’m certain the conference will be over by the time this is published, but I hope many of you took the chance to attend and here’s to hoping we are live next year. Sincerely, Ken Bruneski – CGSA BC Director

The DogWood WCTA Report - February/March 2022 - by Jerry Rousseau

W

e certainly didn’t expect 2021 to unfold the same way as 2020 but here we are and as of mid-February 2022, things have not yet returned to normal. Our world began to inch forward with the first WC TA in-person event held since the Februar y 2020 conference, the Pat Dooley Memorial Golf Tournament taking place on October 8th, 2021 at Mayfair Lakes in Richmond. A couple months later and with Omicron spreading quickly throughout early winter, there was no choice but to cancel our annual conference and trade show for the second straight year. This, after a necessary venue change from Penticton to the River Rock due to serious highway infrastructure damage caused by the November flooding. At the time of writing, show cancellation fallout is still being dealt with. Meanwhile, the Jan/ Feb Tur f Line News ‘Conference Edition’ had to be completely re -jigged and remains a work in progress. Also meanwhile, Board and staff are focussing on preparations for the Februar y 17 WOW webinar that will include our AGM. Things are looking up and plans for a ginormous summer field day are in the works, maybe even more than one. Further WOW installments are being considered to ensure CEC/CEU point availability and of course it’s never too early to start planning for our 2023 conference and

42

trade show. All sorts of details will be released in the coming weeks. Thank you for your unwavering support over the past two years and crossed fingers that 2022 will end much better than it started!
