N

ow that the Autumn Season has finally arrived, we have time to go back and reflect upon how we, as an industr y, fared in ser vicing the golfing community of British Columbia. The year 2020 has most definitely presented challenges to the golf industry unlike anything experienced in any year prior. This year undoubtedly will be remembered by many as the Year of Covid-19.

What started as a normal year at the beginning of 2020 soon unraveled as anything but a normal year as the Covid pandemic became the new reality. As the year progressed golf courses throughout the province were diligent in finding ways to continue with business as usual in providing optimum playing conditions while maintaining as safe an environment as possible for golf course employees

The two catch phrases that became prevalent over the past year is ‘social distancing’ and the ‘new normal’.

The provincial protocols that have governed us over the past several months has forced the industry, not only to find new ways of doing our jobs, but also for us, as an Association, to find new and meaningful ways to provide education and value to the membership of the BCGSA In trying to determine what the new normal will look like the BCGSA has been exploring different ideas as to how the Association can best facilitate the needs of its membership while maintaining the wellbeing and safety of its members.

On the heels of a successful online seminar via Zoom, plans are in the works to have a virtual version of the BCGSA Professional Development Days mid-November via the same platform. The two day education event will feature world renowned speakers as well as an online auction in our continuing commitment to raising funds for MS. As we contemplate what the new normal will look like, we can rest assured that the golf industr y of British Columbia will adapt as it has done over the past several decades.

The superintendents of this province have, time after time, been recognized for their resilience to change, whether it be new regulations regarding pesticide use or water use or dealing with a worldwide pandemic.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the BCGSA being incorporated as a society in British Columbia. The history of the BCGSA, as well as its humble beginnings in the regions throughout BC, prior to becoming registered as a society, is profiled in this edition of the DogWood Also featured are the regional and allied association reports.

President’s Message For many of us, that catch up is during the third week of November in Victoria as part of the BCGSA Professional Development Days. With this annual event going virtual this year, there is an opportunity for hopefully even more of our members to attend.

If travel (or registration) costs have made attending restrictive in the past, that concern will be eliminated in 2020. I can assure you, as much time and effort is going into planning this virtual conference as ever, and speakers will continue to be world renowned.

s fall is in full swing and daylight is less than 12 hours, finding time to maintain golf courses with reduced staff members while working in and around the high demand for play is as challenging as ever.

Fall also typically presents a time for those in our industry to breathe, look back upon a busy summer, dissect successes and failures and refresh and plan for the next summer to come. It also let’s us catch up with one another, discuss new trends, hear about new products and get up to speed on the latest research that has been conducted.

Industry is again stepping up with sponsorship of the event as well as supporting the Silent Auction. Much needed CECs will be available so please reward yourself for leading your teams through a challenging 2020, put your phone on “do no disturb”, lock your office door and put away your email and join your colleagues in refreshing your brain come the third week of November.

With the Annual General Meeting being virtual as part of the conference, we will give thanks to outgoing Past President Paul Robertson and welcome in new President Warren Blue.

The British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association is a society to promote and support the Golf Course Management profession in British Columbia.

Moving into the Past President’s role myself, I can only reiterate what others have said before me, being that, as much work as you put into volunteering, you get way more out of it in return. A great place to begin volunteering is to involve yourself in your regional BCGSA executive and participate – the rest will take care of itself.

Early Beginnings of the Regions of the BCGSA September 8, 2020 Commemorates Twenty-Five Years Since Incorporation of the British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association as the BCGSA Celebrates it’s 25th Anniversary.

I

n the early years of the British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association chapters were run individually around the province; the Lower Mainland, Interior, Kootenays and the Island. By 1995 these chapters came together to form the provincial association of the BCGSA. In 1999 the Northern chapter was formed and joined the BCGSA in 2000.

Lower Mainland Region Experiences are better when shared. It is somewhat odd that now, just a short time ago, over 50 years after the “originals” would gather in the early years, absent any structure, some of the same “greenskeepers” would gather again to discuss the beginning of what would become the Lower Mainland Chapter of the now, BCGSA. Our group now consists of former Supers and Industr y veterans with many miles on their kissers.

Mid 60’s it was then when things began and now, in 2020, those involved then still gather for a pint and share experiences. After all, those are the true benefits all in any association. Much has changed since the days when Richard Krahn who began at Greenacres in 64, Gordy McKay, Manny Gueho, Don McLeod and Bob Murphy would gather in shops to “talk shop” and help each other out.

The WC TA actually began before any formal BCGSA was born and WC TA meetings would be held at Greenacres GC. Many Superintendents would join the meetings as Eric Hughes (Dept of Agriculture) or Doug Taylor (Agassiz Research Station) would speak to the group. Simple beginnings at first, evolving into the current version of a provincial BCGSA structure.

In the early 90’s the Lower Mainland members would donate their time, labour, expertise and equipment to build tur f plots at UBC to be used for research. Graham Drew from UBC oversaw the project and Dave Harrison was on the Mylora bulldozer. During those early years, no industr y were allowed, meetings took place when a group of peers would meet uninfluenced. Humble beginnings for sure, nothing fancy but very meaningful, open discussions among dedicated Superintendents looking to share ideas to help each other be better at their jobs.

Exchange Tournaments began, giving superintendents time to unwind in the fall; gatherings in shops, playing a

round of golf, followed by a bbq, was good for the soul. The Groundsman Tournaments were also an annual highlight where morning work was done and off to the Delta GC for friendly competition on the course between clubs. Laughs were plenty as Superintendents flipped burgers and said thanks to the many crews around the Lower Mainland.

Many great memories in our lunch gatherings of former superintendents and industry members. Those involved today in the BCGSA remain true to our profession. Please do not lose sight of the value in getting together to help each other succeed.

Interior Region The Interior Region had it’s early beginning around 1967.

In those days it was an informal group of superintendents meeting to share knowledge and experiences and enjoying the camaraderie and support of fellow superintendents.

Meetings were important, especially to newcomers to the industr y as members were all ver y open to share their knowledge and experiences.

Some of the early members, who not only shaped the structure of the Interior Region, but were also instrumental in forming the entire provincial association were: Ashley LeGeyt, Don Parker and Craig Lewis. Meetings were well attended by all regional superintendents as well as industry members whose equipment and other products support the industr y.

In those early days the Interior Region communicated and cooperated with the Lower Mainland Superintendents Association as, at that time, it was the only other Superintendents Association in the province. Interior and Lower Mainland members would get together at the WC TA & CGSA Conferences. Along the way other events were formed like the Exchange Tournament and other Fall Tournaments.

As time went by, the realization that all superintendents in British Columbia have common issues and concerns and there was a need to unite under a common banner and speak with one voice. It became a logical choice to unite and become the British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association. Every chapter had their own committed people that helped move the provincial agenda forward, but in the Interior, Ashley was the leader of the band, and worked to make this idea a reality.

Kootenay Region On April 10, 1979 twelve people got together to form the Kootenay chapter of what would become the BCGSA of today. On May 29, 1979 two Interior Chapter

The Executive and Charter Members were as followed: President - Ray Hayward - Christina Lake GC, Vice President - Graydon Goff - Nelson GC, Secretar y/Treasurer - Craig Stocker - Kokanee Springs GC, Director - Leo Lambert - Creston GC, Director - Bob Brydon - Fernie GC, Nick Sherstibitoff - Castlegar GC, Alex Bojey - Valley View GC, Al Tomiuk - Salmo GC, Skinny Anderson - Nakusp GC, Lockie MacPherson - Kaslo GC, Colin Packam - Rossland/ Trail GC & Industr y - Doug Murdoch - Fallis Tur f. These Superintendents and one Industr y Representative were the start of the Kootenay Chapter.

In 1982 Ray Hayward, Superintendent of the Christina Lake Golf Club, hosted the annual BCGSA Inter Chapter Exchange Golf Tournament for the Kootenay Chapter ’s first inter-chapter event. In the fall of that year Dr Steve Fushtey from the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Agassiz B.C. ran snow mold trials for the first time in the Kootenays at Superintendent Craig Stocker ’s Golf Course, Kokanee Springs Golf Resort.

In 1985 the Kootenay Chapter had their first member join from the East, Bob Payne Superintendent of the Cranbrook Golf Club, which would begin a large growth in our Chapter from East Kootenay Golf Course Superintendents. By the fall of 1987 we were all looking to write and pass an exam so that we could apply landscape pesticides on our Golf Courses.

In October of 1989 at our chapter meeting in Creston we were introduced to Trail’s Birchbank Golf Course new Superintendent, Greg Kennedy, who became a very strong promoter for having educational speakers at each meeting. By 1990 WCB Regulations for ROPS and FOPS were under review and WCB Regional Manager for the Kootenays, Barry Morrison, invited us to come for ward with recommendations to the second draft amendment in these areas. On October 10, 1990 an ad-hoc committee of Bob Br ydon, Len Heyworth, Peter Kreutz and Craig Stocker was formed and presented recommendations from the Kootenay membership.

The growth of the Kootenay Chapter has been exceptional looking from the original 12 golf course members and 1 industr y member to 51 golf course members and 25 industr y members now in 2020 and we continue to survive under a strong leadership.

Vancouver Island Region The early roots of the Vancouver Island Region ( VIGSA) began in the early 1980’s, where the Superintendent of the Mount Brenton Golf Course, Dave Sandulo, had a vision to form a group of peers who could meet up to network and expand knowledge and abilities.

In 1982 Dave wrote letters to fellow superintendents and suppliers; the response was small and originally only nine hole courses wished to be involved. Seven Superintendents met to discuss their plan to move for ward and by the mideighties it was certain that the interest was growing, but they still needed eighteen hole courses to get involved to seal the deal!

One problem existed, where to hold the meetings. A gentleman by the name of Percy Criddle, owner of the Glen Meadows Golf and Country Club in Victoria, solved the problem as he offered up a space for lunch (free) and golf for those that attended. A great meeting was had with a framework laid for future growth. What a break-thru moment this was! Just to meet at an eighteen hole golf course was huge and soon Colwood, Uplands, Victoria, and the Gorge were all getting involved.

By this point in time the BCGSA recognized the desire of VIGSA to form an association and wished to formally acknowledge VIGSA. A couple of members from the mainland; Craig Lewis and Dave Sullivian came over to the island to meet with superintendents from the Island to help get us up and running. The Vancouver Island Golf Superintendents Association officially became an association in 1987.

Northern Region In 1999 Stephen Kerbrat, Greg Broome and Cary Blue met at the Smithers Golf and Country Club to discuss the formation of the Northern Region of the British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association.

In its infancy members of the Northern Region were very very friendly and considerate, down to earth, people who took great pride in their craft. Their professional conduct was second to none with everyone willing to help whenever called upon.

There were many courses in the area that were not members of the association.

A couple of members such as Dave Lister and Greg Broome contacted many of the surrounding courses in an attempt to recruit more members by explaining the benefits of joining the association. The northern region, being a vast spreadout area, sometimes involving a day or more travel time, requires quite a commitment to attend meetings. Despite the distance between golf courses, superintendents were very receptive to the idea of coming together with fellow superintendents and the Northern Region began to grow.

In the Spring of 2000 the Northern Region had its first meeting in the North. The Northern Region was incorporated into the British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association in the year 2000. The inclusion of the Northern Region accomplished representation of membership throughout all of British Columbia.

Jim served as President from 1995 until 1998. n September 8, 1995 the incorporation of the British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association took place as the Interior, Lower Mainland, Kootenay and Vancouver Island regions came together to form one association.

Prior to 1995 – The roster was produced every second year with each region taking their turn to produce it.

The 1996 Exchange was hosted by the Kootenay Region and was held at Nelson, BC.

The BCGSA together with the BC PGA put together a 1500 sq. ft. booth, exhibiting the “Tools of our Profession”. Industry suppliers contributed turf machinery, fertilizers, and irrigation supplies so that we could begin to create awareness of the important role Superintendents and turfgrass professionals play in the business of golf. This was the most significant step taken in the history of the BCGSA to date, as the Board realized the importance of raising its profile in the golf business.

The first regular meeting of the BCGSA was held on July 17, 1996 at Belmont Golf Club in Fort Langley, BC in conjunction with the WC TA Field Days.

In November 1996, Arbutus Ridge Golf & Country Club agreed to house the BCGSA Head Office on a permanent basis. Ms Roberta Rumsby was hired on a fee for service basis to become the first BCGSA employee to run and administer the provincial office.

At this time the BCGSA office took over producing the yearly membership roster.

A line of BCGSA merchandise; golf shirts and jackets, were ordered with the BCGSA logo to be sold to members with the intent of bolstering the image and visibility of the BCGSA.

This was the early beginnings of the BCGSA as it evolved over the next twenty-five years.

From February 14-16th the BCGSA participated in the Vancouver Golf Expo at the Pacific Coliseum, a three day event with approximately 15,000 golfers participating in a variety of activities and exhibitions.

In addition, there were many local media and sports celebrities on hand, including Richard Zokoll.

On July 15th the BCGSA participated in the WC TA Field Day and Golf Tournament that was held at the Redwoods Golf Club.

The 1997 Exchange Tournament was hosted by the Interior Region and was held on September 12th at the Penticton Golf & Country Club. Host Superintendent was Tony Patrocinio. At the BCGSA Exchange meeting a motion was passed to look into incorporating a Northern Region of the association.

The BCGSA AGM was held at the WC TA Conference in Penticton in February. Another meeting was held at the WC TA Field Day at Swan-E-Set Bay Golf Resort in July.

The BCGSA AGM was held on Feb 28th at the WC TA Conference in Victoria, BC. The 2000 Exchange Tournament was hosted by the Kootenay Region and was held at “ The Springs Course” at Radium Golf Course. Host Superintendent was Jerry Wright. 40 Members were present.

In 2001 the Brian Finnigan Memorial Bursary Fund Bursary was established as a scholarship to be given to British Columbia students pursuing a career in the golf course industry.

Brian Finnigan was the Superintendent at the Furry Creek Golf Club. Brian passed away in the spring of 1999 of a sudden heart attack at the young age of forty-one. A number of donations were sent to the Finnigan family and the Furry Creek Golf Club. The family felt the best use of these funds would be to start a memorial fund in Brian’s name. The purpose of this fund would be to assist members in the golf maintenance industry in British Columbia to further their education.

The Ministry of Environment requirements were amended making it mandatory to hold Pesticide Applicator ’s Certificates. The CEC’s Program was set up and coordinated by Bob Wick of the WC TA. A By-law amendment was made requiring all BCGSA Class A & Class B members to hold a current Pesticide Applicator ’s Certificate.

The Board introduced “New Members Packages” that would be sent out to all new members of the BCGSA. 2002 Superintendent of the Year was Ashley LeGeyt of Gallagher ’s Canyon.

Brian Finnigan Memorial Bursary Award was presented to Davin Marr of Hillview Golf Club & Kevin Cox of Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club.

Board of Director Changes: Gary Bartley replaced Brad Ackerman as the Lower Mainland Region Rep Alan Dobbs came onto the Board as the Kootenay Region Rep The BCGSA AGM was held at the WC TA Conference in Victoria, BC on Tuesday, February 24th.– 49 members were present.

The BCGSA AGM was held March 1st at the WC TA Conference in Penticton, BC with 45 members present.

The 2005 Exchange Tournament was hosted by the Kootenay Region and was held on August 29th at the Kokanee Springs Golf Course in Crawford Bay, BC. Host Superintendent was Jerry Rousseau. This year ’s Exchange included a fishing trip on Kootenay Lake with East Shore Charters.

The 2004 Exchange Tournament was hosted by the Island Region and took place from September 25-27th at the Cordova Bay Golf Club. Host Superintendent was Dean Piller.

The Brian Finnigan Memorial Bursary Award was presented to two recipients this year, John Smillie of the Dunes at Kamloops and to Greg Austin of the Williams Lake Golf & Country Club.

The BCGSA began an “Article of the Year ” Award and the first recipient was Dave Lister for his article entitled, “Golf Carts, the Necessary Evil”.

2004 Superintendent of the Year was Greg Kennedy, of the Rossland-Trail Golf Course.

The By-laws of the BCGSA were amended to include an “I” Classification for Industry Members. All Industry Members are welcome at all regional meetings.

The BCGSA hosted a hospitality reception at the CGSA Fall Field Day in Whistler. A salmon and steak barbeque was hosted by the BCGSA at the Whistler Golf Club on Saturday, September 15th.

The 2008 Exchange Tournament was hosted by the Island Region on August 25th at the Cottonwood Golf Club. Host Superintendent was Brett Lamontagne.

Rory Johnstone reported on behalf of Greg Kowalski that on January 25, 2008 the Vancouver Island Region put on a hockey game in hopes to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis. The response was overwhelming.

Over $8000 was raised for the cause. The “Island Guys” felt that such an event helped raise the profile of the golf superintendent profession in the community.

The BCGSA will conduct a pilot project this year in the collection of membership dues of the Kootenay Region. If this endeavour proves to be successful, it may be extended to other regions the following year.

The Brian Finnigan Memorial Bursary Award was awarded to Adrien van Dyk of the Greywolf Golf Course.

Article of the Year Award went to Lawrence Kinch of BrettYoung for his article entitled, “Premium Quality Fertilizers”.

2008 Superintendent of the Year was Ralph Tromp of March Meadows Golf Course, Honeymoon Bay, BC. Bob Wick submitted his notice of retirement to the WC TA Board of Directors stating that he would like to retire the winter of 2008 or early 2009.

BCGSA History - 2009 The summer meeting for the Northern Region was held on July 8th at Prince Rupert. where a charter fishing trip was scheduled . Everyone met at 5:15 am sharp to arrange vehicles to the dock.

Between the 12 people who fished, they caught pink salmon, coho, skate, spring salmon, halibut, rock cod, ling cod, red snapper, rat fish, turbot, dog fish, octopus and of course, dolphin.

The 2009 Exchange Tournament was hosted by the Lower Mainland Region. The event was held on September 20/21st at the Whistler Golf Club. Host The BCGSA hosted a Pre -Conference Golf Tournament prior to the conference on Saturday, February 2st at the Gorge Vale Golf Course. Scott Wheeler and the crew did a terrific job of preparing the course.

There were 72 participants in the golf tournament and about 80 attended the banquet. The Kwantlen Polytechnic University students set up a tent with a fun survey where participants could win prizes. Due to an unforeseen frost delay, the tournament was delayed until a 2:00 start time, which did not allow the participants to finish the 18 holes. Over $3000 in prizes was given out.

It was announced that Jerry Rousseau will be taking over the position of Executive Director of the WC TA. Bob Wick will be retiring later in the year after the transition has been completed. Bob was presented with a Lifetime Membership Award of the BCGSA.

Late August came and went, but nary a turtle to be found. Not that golfers are usually skeptical, but at this point they definitely were questioning our theory. And, truth be told we were all beginning to wonder too. On the eve of the conference the BCGSA started a new tradition in hosting the first ever Dave Creamer Memorial Scholarship Hockey Game The first game was played at the Frank Crane Memorial Arena in Nanaimo. Dave Creamer, former greens superintendent of Crown Isle Golf Resort, who’s sudden passing in May of 2009 shocked the tur fgrass industry in this province. ( The Creamer Brothers pictured below).

This spring came, and again, nary a turtle to be found. Everyone, including my crew and myself had given up on the idea that we had helped the blue listed western painted turtle. 2010 Superintendent of the Year was Jim Dafoe of the Fairwinds Golf Course.

The 2010 Exchange Tournament was hosted by the Kootenay Region and was held on August 17th at St. Eugene Mission Golf Resort in Cranbrook, BC. Host Superintendent was Graeme Douglas.

On August 10th a retirement party was held for long time member, Ashley LeGeyt on a houseboat cruise on Okanagan Lake. Ashley began his golf course career at the Kelowna Golf and Countr y Club in 1965 where he assumed the roll of Grounds Superintendent in 1969. Ashley remained at the Kelowna club until he moved to the Gallagher ’s Canyon Golf Club in 1979.

During his tenure in this business Ashley ser ved as president and a board director for ever y regional and national golf industry association. Ashley was one of the founding members of the BCGSA and instrumental in garnering recognition of the professionalism associated with golf course superintendents.

Ashley relocated to Cabo San Luca, Mexico in 2009. and plans to remain there for as long as he sees fit.

The BCGSA participated with NAGA BC and subsequently took part in the Golf Lobby Day in May. This assisted in efforts to promote the superintendent as the professionals they are.

A monthly newsletter was introduced to help keep members abreast of what’s happening in the BCGSA. The BCGSA AGM was held at the WC TA Conference in Victoria on January 23rd. This conference saw the introduction of a new BCGSA networking and socializing opportunity with the Monday Night Social Beer MakesMemorial A GreatHockey Dipping Sauce! and Dave Creamer Game that took place at the Save On Foods Memorial Arena.

A new award was established to be presented in recognition of outstanding service by an industry member.

For the first time ever, a new format was used at the Exchange where an Equipment Demo was set up for attendees to circulate through various stations.

Another addition to the Exchange was a Round Table Discussion facilitated with a panel of expert Superintendents.

At the end of the Exchange the BCGSA Board met with the WC TA Board for a discussion regarding amalgamation between the BCGSA and the WC TA.

BCGSA History - 2014 2014

The BCGSA AGM was held at the CGSA Conference in Vancouver, BC during the Olympic Games. On Thursday night, February 20th the BCGSA sponsored a social at Mahony ’s Irish Pub on the water front.

Well over 200 participants attended the Social as they took in taped showings of the Canada Final Hockey games at the Olympics.

The 2014 Exchange Tournament was hosted by the Island Region on August 17/18th at the Bear Mountain Golf Course. Host Superintendent: Darren Burns.

The 2014 Superintendent of the Year was Rory Johnstone of Qualicum Memorial Golf Course.

Board of Directors Changes: Mark Berg replaced Greg Broome as the Northern Region Rep The 2020 Exchange Tournament was to be hosted by the Kootenay Region and was scheduled to be at Copper Point Golf Club but had to be postponed due to COVID-19.

A Membership Meeting to take the place of the Exchange Meeting was held by ZOOM on July 14th with 55 in attendance.

The 2020 Professional Development Days scheduled to take place in November at the Canadian Conference in Vancouver had to be postponed due to COVID-19.

At the time of writing the Board is planning to hold a Virtual Conference in November. Zoom meetings and webinars have become the new way of holding conferences in these times. The Annual General Meeting will also take place virtually this year.

Even as golfers began to fill up the greens again the pandemic took a toll on the industry. Quite an impact was felt by the individual regions due to the guidelines of health officials stating that gathering in groups of 50+ should be curtailed. All regional meetings were cancelled for the foreseeable future.

With distancing in place Industry suppliers were not able to meet with their clients and found that golf courses were tightening their spending and coping with smaller crews in an attempt to stay open.

The provincial office also was impacted as two of the primary revenue sources were affected; the Professional Development Days and the Exchange.

New ways of doing things had to be adopted, some of which may stick around after the pandemic is over.

Regional and Provincial Board meetings started taking place through ZOOM meetings and education webinars replaced speakers at conferences.

These are most certainly unprecedented times like no one has ever seen before. Superintendents and the industry as a whole has had to become more resilient and adaptable to changing times. There is no known end in site to the pandemic that has ravaged countries around the world but we can be hopeful that the worst is behind us and look forward to a return to the new “normal” in the not too distant future.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic 2020 will definitely be a year that will be remembered throughout history.

As this disease was ushered into our province it left much uncertainty in its wake. Hundred’s of thousands of people were shuttered in their homes awaiting the government’s direction on how it would handle such a crisis. Businesses were boarded up, schools and universities closed, workers were laid off or began working from home, and no one knew when things would return to “normal”.

The golf industry faired better than many other businesses and sports as it is one of the few activities that could be achieved through social distancing.

Golf courses began to reopen with social distancing measures in place, limiting the amount of golfers on

BCGSA History - In Summary In twenty-five short years the British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association has evolved from the early beginnings of two regions getting together at conference and exchanges to a thriving provincial association with representation in all regions of the province. The strength of the BCGSA is in its regions, and their autonomy to chart their own path in how they wish their region to be governed.

Presentations. The BCGSA works cooperatively with other organizations in hosting events such as: Pre Conference Seminars, golf tournaments, hockey games, socials and hospitality events. The profile of the BCGSA is raised by its Interaction with government officials, participation at Golf Awareness Days, and involvement with associations whose interests run parallel to the BCGSA, i.e. AGA-BC, CGSA, WC TA.

Over the course of these twenty-five years the BCGSA has evolved into the organization it is today.

A Board of Directors comprising all five regions has been established and membership meetings take place twice a year. Production of the DogWood magazine, a yearly roster and newsletters are published. Various fundraising ventures such as online auctions, contests, and the selling of BCGSA merchandise have been attempted. A website was launched, CEC tracking was undertaken and social media have become key components of the BCGSA. Scholarships have been established, and fundraising for research and other charities take place annually.

Education Events have been undertaken such as the Professional Development Days, Exchange Meeting, Online Webinars, Superintendent Discussion Panels, and Equipment Demos and Display Table

Superintendents laid the foundation of the BCGSA as they initially came together to network and share experiences. Today the BCGSA is comprised of over 400 members, representing superintendents, assistants, industry partners, students, maintenance workers, and equipment and irrigation technicians.

No doubt there are some challenging times ahead for the industry; to get through the pandemic and climate change to name a few but the BCGSA looks forward to the next twenty five years with optimism for growth across the province and a continued strong association in BC. There will be changes in technology and advancement in science that will alter the course of the future for golf courses but golf maintenance professionals will remain resilient and adaptable to face whatever the future holds.

Report from the Kootenay Region

W

inter cannot come fast enough in the Kootenay ’s; it has been a year of many ups and downs. The season started with many unknowns and as the season moved forward things still were not clear. I know for myself I am looking forward to winter and some much-needed time off. Covid-19 has changed the way we do things in our personal and professional lives.

We all knew that Covid-19 would have a serious impact on the world but what took me by surprise was the impact it had on golf. The season started out just as predicted with rounds being down but what happened during the summer months was astonishing. Rounds were up, people that had left the game of golf had now come back and there were many new faces on the links. From talking with others this was the trend almost everywhere.

This season was the first for all of us that regional meetings were cancelled due to the virus, gatherings of what we once knew will probably be on hold for a while to come. Now we must find new ways to get together.

Dr. Jessie Benelli on September 9th was able to show us how easy it can be getting us together. Dr. Benelli who is a Tur f pathologist for Bayer ES Canada hosted a webinar where his topic covered snow mold. In this webinar Dr. Benelli showed us how sudden shifts in weather conditions can influence the snow mold pathogen and how it could affect your fungicide applications.

Craig Stocker On a final note, after a 44-year Career in the Tur f Grass Industry Craig Stocker has decided to retire on February 28th, 2021. 27 years were spent at Kokanee Springs and he finished his last 17 years at the Castlegar Golf Club. I had to do some quick math; he started his Tur f career in 1976. Wow!!! I will speak on behalf of all our Kootenay Chapter Members that we wish Craig all the best in his retirement years.

W

ow. What a year it has been! We’ve made it though right?!?!

moving through the next items on the list will be that much more rewarding.

As the season like no other winds down it is important to take time to reflect on the personal accomplishments you as a Superintendent, and you as a person, have achieved. All too often we charge into the task list as it is what we know and what we do best. We have built comfort and satisfaction into checking those boxes.

The social connections made at VIGSA meetings have been sorely missed this year. The BCGSA has strongly stepped up with an excellent schedule of webinar events. I look forward to the upcoming educational opportunities this fall / winter. Please keep an eye on your inbox for event information.

I encourage you to take the minute, the hour, the day, the week, however much time you need. Take a look back at the season and give yourself a mental pat on the back. You led your team through this season, you made decisions that helped the success of your club and you provided the golfing conditions so that many could slip away from the stresses of their own life to enjoy a round of golf. Take pride in your accomplishments and

The DogWood Report from the Lower Mainland Region

I

f nothing else, 2020 has reminded us all what is most important. It is so easy to lose focus of the life balance we all need to be our best. Covid has reminded us of that. All too often, we get so drawn in to our careers and tr ying to please everyone all of the time, we forget to take the time to ensure our health, and the health of our family should be our first priority. We have all been incredibly fortunate to be part of an industr y that has been resilient to such a life changing event.

Covid has also been a time when the entire industr y needed to look inward and be creative and resourceful to determine how our industry could not only sur vive this pandemic, but opportunities that might benefit the industr y going forward.

Everything from asking, “should we have been sanitizing touchpoints all along” to “do we need bunker rakes for ever y day play ”? Questions we should have been asking, but were never forced to. We have all been involved in analyzing our strengths/weaknesses, opportunities/threats, but an event such as Covid has truly forced us to take this so much more seriously. I truly believe there will be some incredible and ingenious ideas that come from this unprecedented event. I have been so impressed how creative and pro-active Golf Course Superintendents have been in BC and throughout the industr y. Not unlike many industries, especially the Food and Beverage industr y, we all will need to continue to adjust and constantly adapt to this new reality.

I would like to thank the BCGSA for adapting as well through the last 6 months. It was so difficult to predict what the next the week or month was going to bring which meant a lot of time and correspondence with various associations, host clubs, and speakers tr ying to determine what, if any events would be able to move forward this year. Once it was apparent that no physical meetings or conferences could happen, the board quickly switched gears and looked at what they could provide the membership. At the end of April, the BCGSA hosted the first webinar of the year that featured Dean Mosdell Ph.D., Western Technical Manager for Syngenta Professional Solutions. The BCGSA also provided the AGA-BC, COVID-19 PROTEC TION - BEST PRAC TICES FOR RESPONSIBLE OPERATION OF BC GOLF COURSES to the membership. This was an incredibly thorough and well done document.

Thanks to all that were involved in the development of such an important tool. Shout out to Brett Finlayson! This event was followed by the second webinar in July and featured Dr. Richard Latin that hosted a webinar entitled “Effective and Efficient Use of Fungicides for Tur f Disease Control.”

Again this webinar was preceded by BCGSA updates including the minutes from the AGM and a financial report for 2020. Thank you for all your efforts to continue to provide the membership with these informative and educational opportunities.

Going forward, I am continually grateful just how great an industry we are part of. Not only has golf proven to be an incredible outlet for so many people this year, it has brought out the best of the people associated with the game. People that care and are engaged in the future health of the sport and industry that supports it. We should all be taking the opportunity to highlight to all our stakeholders just how many benefits to our health and wellbeing this great game offers.

It has been a very challenging and incredibly busy year, but I think the industry will be in a better place because of the actions of the great people we have leading our industry.

Please stay healthy and allow some time to relax and spend time with family this off season. I look forward to the next time we can all get together. It will be epic!

Report from the Northern Region Greetings from the North!

I am sure when I say, “ These are ver y strange times”, everyone in the golf industr y would agree.

From an uneasy start to the season, wondering whether there would even be a golf season, to many budget proposals to accommodate the anticipated decline in revenues and its reflection on the cutting schedule and staff levels, and of course the development of our Covid-19 protocol plans.

The DogWood Report from the Interior Region

I

t’s the end of the summer and I thought we may have escaped another smoky one however the way that 2020 has been unfolding, some would say that this is par for the course. We have been fortunate in many ways this year as the golf industry could’ve been one of the unlucky ones impacted by the woes of the world but thankfully that has not been the case. I have been hearing that many golf courses, mine included, have had a prosperous season (so far) and are still conducting business as usual, for the most part.

Speaking of smoke, it is interesting to see the impact that poor air quality has on growing and managing healthy tur f. Over the last number of years where we have had either wildfires in our area or smoke from other regions, I have obser ved that there are different challenges to maintaining tur f in those conditions. The smoke tends to cool air temperatures which one would think would make the surrounding climate similar to the shoulder seasons however on my golf course; the dry areas still remain dr y even with some extra watering and TLC. It also appears that the smoke affects respiration and photosynthesis within tur f plants therefore it makes it difficult to continue maintaining in a normal fashion.

To add salt to the wound, if the poor air quality remains, then simultaneously we get pressures with disease, on our budget and our own personal stress. As if we don’t

have enough challenges on our plate…let’s hope for clear skies in our near future!

There is not much to report, regional-wise, as there haven’t been any meetings or gatherings within our Chapter. Some have been keeping in touch with one another via phone calls, emails or the odd physical distancing hangout but other wise it has been relatively quiet. Personally I miss the interaction with my fellow tur fies however I feel it is wise that we uphold our professional image and show our communities that we are working within the guidelines put forth to us.

Thankfully we are still able to access online educational opportunities which help us remain on top of our game.

A big thank you to those who take the time to create these options for us!

It’s hard to believe that September is upon us and it is time to be thinking of putting the golf course to bed.

I wish everyone all the best with finishing up the golf season and I hope that we will be able to resume our normal practices of educational seminars, meetings and conferences sooner than later. Until then, good luck and happy golfing!

I

’m pretty sure as time moves on none of us will forget the year of 2020. Covid hit us pretty hard in March and April, and no sooner did we start the re -opening of our lives with safety measures in place and the whole of the west coast of the United States lit up like a tinder box. Most of North America has been affected by these fires and we can only imagine how bad it is for those people that live in the area of those fires. The fires will likely pass as fall and winter bring moisture and cooler temperatures but Covid-19 is something we will be dealing with for some time.

Through all of this, our lives, although affected without question, seemed to have to move on, sometimes it seemed with disregard for people’s health and safety. I am proud to be part of an industry that, from my perspective, was ver y proactive in its approach to ensure safety for staff and golfers alike. I believe that Covid-19 will become a big deal again as flu season hits and I would like to remind our members that your associations have built excellent Covid19 guidelines available online at our new CGSA website.

Also on the website are some very informative education sessions. These sessions may be the way we acquire our CEC points moving for ward so get on the website and see if there is anything that would suit your needs. In addition please feel free to contact me anytime with ideas for speakers or sessions that might be available that you would like to take part in, we are always looking for new ways to provide our members with the things they need.

From all reports it seems Covid-19 has had a very positive impact on golf. Reports from ever y superintendent I have talked to have expressed resurgence in golf and golfers have sprung

from the woodwork. It seems golf has become popular again as a safe way to get outside and get some exercise. At first, for me, it seemed as though the golf industr y might be taking advantage of a bad situation, but since more information regarding the transmission of this disease has come out I feel certain that golf can, and is, a safe activity during these times.

One thing that has been seriously disrupted by Covid-19 is large gatherings of any kind. Our association meetings, events, and conferences have all been postponed or become virtual in this new normal we live. The CGSA is looking at venues and options for our next conference, but at this time it’s impossible to know just when we might be able to get back to having a full in-person conference. Keep your eyes peeled on our publications and e -blasts so you are up to date on what might be happening in the future.

Lastly I would like to thank you all for allowing me to ser ve you in BC as the CGSA Director.

The association has been a ver y positive influence on my career with the conferences, education, and networking opportunities they have provided over the years. Now that golf is somewhat back on track, take the time to review your membership status and if you can, renew your membership. These are difficult times for ever yone and it’s no different at the CGSA. We require your support to continue to provide these education and networking opportunities and we appreciate your support.

58th Annual WCTA Conference & Trade Show Cancelled Dear WC TA Members and Friends, Regrettably, the Western Canada Tur fgrass Association 58th Annual Conference and Trade Show, that was to take place at the Penticton Lakeside Resort in Penticton, British Columbia, February 9-11, 2021, has been cancelled.

With mass gathering limits expected to remain in place for some time and in consideration of feedback received from our recent member survey, the Board of Directors concluded the only option was to cancel, rather than postpone, our flagship annual event. “ We received valuable feedback from the sur vey, especially through individual comments,” stated WC TA Executive Director, Jerry Rousseau, explaining, “even if Provincial Health Office restrictions were relaxed in the coming months, clearly there is too much uncertainty regarding the health and safety of our patrons within a large event setting to move forward with production.”

The WC TA conference team has been notified along with the venue. Since deposits had not yet been required, there was no financial implication to cancel but as an official credit coordinator for the BC pesticide applicator recertification program, there is an immediate need for some type of education delivery mechanism, at least in the short term, to ensure applicator members are able to renew their certificates.

Announcement from WCTA President Travis Olson – “Cancelling our show is truly disappointing but I’m happy to announce a new online education series being planned to run October through March, called ‘ WCTA Online Webinars’ or WOW for shor t! The Board understands that one of our key mandates is to deliver turf management education, including oppor tunities to earn CEC points, in a convenient and affordable way and I encourage everyone to take advantage of the WOW program during the upcoming off-season.”

Staff confirms several speakers are in the process of being lined up for the new webinar series, focussing primarily on CEC point offerings. Sponsorship opportunities for industr y suppliers and ser vice providers will be available while a finalized ‘ WOW ’ schedule is expected to be released before end September.

“In addition to the new webinars, Board and staff have been exploring a number of platforms to host an online version of our 2021 Conference and Trade Show,” said Olson, adding, “Down the road, I fully expect we’ll be holding our in-person conference and trade show again but on top of the new webinar series being launched this fall, there are many exciting new possibilities being looked at and we will keep all WC TA members and supporters updated on our progress.”

The DogWood BCGSA Virtual Conference - November 16-18, 2020

his year’s BCGSA Professional Development Days had to be cancelled due to the COVID19 pandemic. In order to continue its mandate of bringing quality education and networking opportunities to it’s members the BCGSA is pleased to announce that it will be holding a Virtual Conference from November 16-18, 2020 from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm each of the three days. Thanks to Syngenta for generously offering its webinar platform to host this event. Members from around the province will be able to take in this virtual event. All you need to be able to participate is a laptop, a cellphone or a tablet.

Registration will be free to all members of the BCGSA who have paid this year’s Membership Dues. Non-members may also attend the webinar at a cost of $200.00 per person. Please contact the office to enquire further.

The Board is currently working on a great slate of speakers to present over the course of the three days. The schedule of speakers, topic and CEC points available will be posted soon. Be sure and watch for updates on the BCGSA website and through emails over the next month.

The BCGSA Annual General Meeting will take place during the Virtual Conference. All members are urged to attend. Time and Date of the AGM is to be determined. Agenda, Financial Report and a Proposed Budget for 2020-2021 will be sent out two weeks before the meeting.

In conjunction with this year’s event the BCGSA will also be hosting the BCGSA MS Silent Auction.

Details of the Silent Auction, Items Available to be Bid On, and the link to bid on items can be found on the BCGSA website. Auction items are open to bid from all members of the BCGSA. BCGSA/MS S ilent A uction VIGSA has been involved in fund raising for ten years. During this time VIGSA has raised over 1.5 million dollars for MS and the BCGSA hopes to add to that amount with this year’s Online Silent Auction.

BCGSA Membership Benefits & Application Form The British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association is a society to promote and support the Golf Course Management profession in British Columbia Professionalism- The BCGSA heightens the professional recognition of the Golf Course Superintendent, both in golf course maintenance as well as in the culture and science of turf management.
