F

or the past 18 months the Covid pandemic affected dramatic change to how things were accomplished in the golf industry – much like it affected most every other activity or profession in British Columbia.

Due to the restriction on travel and gatherings implemented

by both the provincial and federal governments in lieu of the pandemic, the golf course industry had to adapt itself to remain viable where the external pressures of maintaining as safe an environment as possible for maintenance personnel, clubhouse staff and golfing clientele were greater than the

internal pressures of what tur f health in itself can present.

As the global pandemic progressed over the past several months, so did the understanding of the virus itself and how to better safeguard against it. The protocols abided by were adjusted accordingly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those who could potentially be exposed to the virus.

Despite the enormity of the crisis, to this point in time, most golf courses in our province have adjusted well; doing their best in providing optimum playing conditions, with limited resources, for their respective memberships while maintaining as safe and virus free of an environment as is humanly possible.

To operate under these conditions speaks loudly of the resiliency and adaptability of the golf course industry in British Columbia.

Over the years, superintendents have been called upon at times to adapt when challenged by adversity of varying degrees and have met these challenges well.

Regardless of the challenges and distractions that the pandemic has brought our way, the golf industry remained true to character in caring for the benevolence of their fellow industry compatriots. Again this year as in previous years, both industry and superintendents alike have made great strides in raising funds on both a regional as well as provincial level.

Time after time, whenever there is a need, the golf industr y of this province has been faithful in stepping up to the plate to lend support and financial aid whenever possible for those in need.

President’s Message it's re -opening plan, so that we all can get back to doing all the things that we love, and the BCGSA can get back to its normal operations, offering our members some great professional development and networking opportunities.

W

here did the Spring go?

It doesn't seem that long ago that we were coming out of winter preparing for the 2021 golf season, and now here we are in the thick of our longest days of the year. I'm sure ever yone has done their best to prepare their respective courses for the “Dog Days” of summer, and we will continue to enjoy the success that golf has seen over the last year.

As I write this report, Dr. Henr y is announcing that the province is moving into Stage Two of the re -opening plan, which brings a new wave of optimism of once again being able to get back to doing all the thing's that were once normal for everyone.

I’m sure we all have something we're looking forward to, such as visiting family, seeing friends, going out for dinner and a movie, and of course... networking with your peers!

So...we can only hope that the province stays on track with

With the possibility of us reaching Stage Four in September, the Board is going to start planning for the 2021 Professional Development Days, with the hope that we will be able to once again, host the event in-person in Victoria.

This event takes a lot of time to plan, so the wheels are already in motion with the Events Organizing Committee. It was decided to put out a sur vey to determine if our members will be comfortable with returning to live events and what topics or speakers they would like to see at our event this year.

Please take the time to fill out this sur vey if you have not already done so. We value the feedback from our members and it will greatly help to determine the direction that you would like to see us go in regard to the Professional Development Days event.

The DogWood BCGSA Scholarships Brian Finnigan Memorial Fund Bursary

(open to all members of the British Columbia Golf Superintendents Association) The BCGSA administers the “Brian Finnigan Memorial Bursary Fund”. Brian Finnigan was a Golf Superintendent at the Furry Creek Golf Club who passed away in the spring of 2000 at the young age of 41. Donations were sent to the Finnigan family and the Furry Creek Golf Club. The family felt the best use of these funds would be to start a memorial fund in Brian’s name to assist people in the golf maintenance industr y in British Columbia to further their education.

Application Prerequisites: Applicant’s Superintendent must be a member in good standing in the BCGSA Applicant must be a member of the BCGSA Applicant must be residing in British Columbia Applicant must have a minimum of two seasons of employment on a golf course Applicant must have proof of enrollment in a qualified tur fgrass institution Applicant must have a report from your current Superintendent Please Submit a Photo with Application for Publication Purposes This scholarship is open to all BCGSA members, including anyone taking continuing education courses that enhance your position in the golf course industry.

Please see the BCGSA website to find out further details and download an application form. The Bursary will be awarded to recipient following the Annual General Meeting that takes place in November each year.

Dave Creamer Memorial Bursary Fund

(open to all members of the Vancouver Island Golf Superintendents Association) The Dave Creamer Memorial Bursary Fund was established in 2010 in recognition of long time VIGSA member Dave Creamer who passed away suddenly in May of 2009. Dave’s benevolence and dedication to the golf industry overflowed into his community where he and his wife Patti have run very successful hockey and skating programs for kids of all ages. Due to the legacy that the Creamer family established in giving to the community of the Comox Valley, the members of VIGSA deemed it appropriate to establish some form of scholarship fund that would be of benefit to all VIGSA members and their families.

Over the years, among other fundraising efforts, an annual hockey game and golf tournament is held where fellow peers of the golf course industry participate in honour of their past colleague and friend. All proceeds from these events go to support the Dave Creamer Memorial Bursary Fund. The generous support of the contributors to this fund has made it possible for VIGSA to award a bursary to a successful applicant to help financially in their educational pursuit.

Application Requirements: The Dave Creamer Memorial Bursary Fund is open to all members of VIGSA and their family members who are dependent upon them. The selection of the successful applicant will be left to the sole discretion of the VIGSA Board of Directors.

To qualify, the applicant must: - have documentation verifying their full-time enrollment in post secondary education - provide information on the Application Form, in the space provided, as to what they hope to achieve with the educational program that they are enrolled in and, also, explain their financial need for this bursary.

Application Deadline Date is November 12th 2021

Bob Lister Memorial Scholarship (open to all members of the Kootenay Region)

To support students pursuing post-secondary education, the Kootenay Chapter of the BCGSA has established a scholarship for members, staff members of Kootenay chapter golf courses, and immediate family members of Kootenay Chapter members. This support comes in the form of a scholarship of $1000 or two $500 awards.

The scholarship is named after a long time BCGSA member and Golf Course Superintendent, Bob Lister. Bob graduated from Fairview College and had a long and distinguished career in the tur fgrass industry. He served as a board member of the BCGSA and the Superintendent of the Springs at Radium. He was always willing to help fellow Superintendents with his time and knowledge.

The scholarship will be awarded to the person or persons demonstrating a financial need, dedication, and drive in pursing their post-secondary goals. This scholarship is open to any vocation not just students in the tur fgrass or horticultural field.

Mike Warriner had been with Eagle Ranch Golf Club for almost a decade and a friend to all turf industry members in the kootenay chapter and beyond. His sudden passing in 2019 was a tremendous loss for friends and family alike. This scholarship is to commemorate a great leader in the golf and turf industry.

The scholarship will be awarded to the person or persons demonstrating a financial need, dedication, and drive in pursing their post-secondary goals. This scholarship is open to any vocation not just students in the turfgrass or horticultural field.

Scholarship Criteria for both Scholarships • Completion of Scholarship Application and return to the committee by September 30th, 2021.

Application includes: o Scholarship candidate details o Scholarship essay o Report from referring BCGSA Kootenay Chapter member • The student must be enrolled and provide proof of registration as a full or part time student at a post-secondary institution.

• The student must be: o A member of the BCGSA Kootenay Chapter in good standing o An employee of a BCGSA Kootenay Chapter member in good standing o Immediate family of a BCGSA Kootenay Chapter member in good standing Application Deadline Date for both Scholarships is September 30th

The DogWood Vern Burnell Interior Chapter Scholarship (open to all members of the Interior Region)

The Vern Burnell Interior Chapter Scholarship is named in honour of Vern Burnell, an individual who was a pillar in our industry and instrumental in supporting and growing the Interior Chapter of the BCGSA. The annual scholarship is open to horticulture, mechanic and turfgrass students alike. The scholarship is a minimum of $1,000 to be awarded to he recipient that shows the financial need, commitment, and dedication essential to their successfulness in their chosen field. The applicant will be required to submit, in writing, a request explaining why he/she should be awarded the scholarship.

The criteria for this scholarship is as follows: The applicant must be enrolled as a full time student; and He or she must be employed at a golf course based in the Interior (Okanagan Valley) when not attending school If any students are interested in applying for this scholarship, contact the Interior Region for an application form The deadline for submitting a Scholarship application will be October 31st of each year and the committee will go through the criteria and make their decision after the Interior Chapter Annual General Meeting, usually taking place mid-November.

Applicants will then be notified of his/her acceptance.

BCGSA Regional Presentations In lieu of the Exchange Event

A

s the Board became aware that the 2021 Exchange event would probably not be able to take place this year it structured education by having each region host a presentation that could be attended on the Zoom platform for all members around the province to attend.

Kootenay Region

Our first presentation was hosted by the Kootenay Region and took place on March 30, 2021 entitled “Stress - It Doesn’t Have to be Par for the Course”. Presenters, Sue Bradley and Alana Cotterall gave an interesting presentation.

Northern Region

The Northern Region’s presentation took place on April 28 th . and included an interesting 1 1 / 2 hour session entitled “ The Art of Application”

by Jason Steadwell. Jason presented on the complete disease spray process from initial

diagnosis to post application review, laying out some BMP’s for each step of the way. It also covered understanding and interpreting historical disease and weather data and using that to develop preventative plant protection plans. This presentation included the ability to obtain CEC’s both in IPM and Application Technology.

Interior Region

The Interior Region had a little different format planned. On May 11th, they held a Zoom panel discussion on the topic of ‘Covid-19 and its Effect on the Golf Course Superintendent’.

Representatives from each region were invited to sit on the panel to discuss five topics on the subject. Davin Marr was the moderator of the group. More information can be found on the Interior Report on Page 30.

Lower Mainland Region

The Lower Mainland’s presentation to the province will take place on July 15, 2021. Guest speaker will be Corrie Almack who will be speaking on, “Organic Matter Management and the New OM246 Testing Method”. Corrie will be discussing the importance of Organic Matter management in the overall health of tur f. He will also be updating us on the new OM246 testing method which measures total Organic Matter right up to the sur face of the tur f. This presentation will also include 1.0 IPM CEC for Pesticide Recertification.

Vancouver Island Region

The Vancouver Island region is making plans for a similar presentation to take place in either August or September. Further information will be coming soon.

We’re sure that all members will be out to support their regions as the industr y slowly returns to normal and live meetings are able to take place once again. The BCGSA Exchange event should return in 2022.

What’s the Difference Between Fusarium Patch \ Microdochium Patch \ Pink Snow Mold or Whatever that Disease is Called - by Dr. Tom Hsiang What’s the difference between Fusarium patch and Microdochium patch?

The most common tur fgrass disease in cool, wet maritime climates is caused by a fungus called Microdochium nivale. However, this fungus has been called by a variety of scientific Latin names including: Fusarium nivale, Gerlachia nivalis, Monographella nivalis, Calonectria nivalis, and Micronectriella nivalis among others. One of the older and more established names for this fungus is Fusarium nivale, and hence the common disease name, Fusarium patch. However, there have been attempts to change the common name of the disease to reflect the scientific name of the fungus, such as with the use of ‘Gerlachia patch’ or ‘Monographella patch’. Most of these disease name changes did not catch on, except for ‘Microdochium patch’. So there is no real difference between Fusarium patch and Microdochium patch since they refer to the same disease.

Why did the name of the fungus change?

Blame it on the people who study the fungi (mycologists) and not the people who study the diseases (pathologists). The fungus was first described as in 1825 as Lanosa nivalis. Based on the similarity of spores of this fungus to those of Fusarium species, it was renamed Fusarium nivale in the late 1800's. Up until 1980, the fungus retained this name, and some people even today still refer to it as Fusarium nivale. In 1980, some mycologists proposed that it be renamed Gerlachia nivalis because the spores lacked a feature (conidial foot cell) that is present in spores of true Fusarium species. In 1983, other mycologists proposed a name change to Microdochium nivale based on shared features with another Microdochium species.

This name has remained constant since then, and is generally accepted as the proper one for the stage that produces conidia. ( There is another scientific name for the stage that produces sexual spores - but you don’t really want to know more about that).

What’s the difference between Microdochium patch and pink snow mold?

Microdochium patch, Fusarium patch and pink snow mold are all caused by the fungus Microdochium nivale. There was an attempt in the late 1990's to

change the names of all these diseases to pink snow mold. This caused an awkward situation for regions that very seldom experience snowfall, yet were having outbreaks of what was being called a snow mold disease. More recently, there has been a trend, especially in the U.S., to use the name Microdochium patch to refer to the disease symptoms caused by Microdochium nivale, both with and without snow cover. Under snow cover, Microdochium nivale causes circular patches of disease that can be up to 20 cm across (Figure 1). In the absence of snow cover, and with cool wet weather, Microdochium nivale generally causes irregularly shaped patches that are less than 5 cm across (Figure 2) unless there is a prolonged outbreak. The issue then is whether these should be considered separate diseases or a single disease. I personally prefer to retain the previous distinct of pink snow mold (Figure 1) vs.

Fusarium patch/Microdochium patch (Figure 2) as referring to separate diseases, rather than combining them into a single disease name, Microdochium patch. However, the name Microdochium patch may gradually replace the name Fusarium patch, as more tur f managers become familiar with the newer name.

So with these definitions in mind, Microdochium patch and pink snow mold may be different if they refer to two different diseases, or may be the same if you regard them as a single disease.

What’s the difference between Fusarium patch and pink snow mold?

Fusarium patch is a common spring and fall disease problem on tur f in many parts of Canada and in cool temperate areas around the world, which have prolonged periods of cool, wet weather, such as northern Europe. The symptoms develop slowly, and the time from an initial infection until symptoms are visible can take weeks. In the fall, if actions are taken only after extensive symptoms are observed, it may be hard to get rid of the symptoms because the grass is slowing down or going into dormancy, and regrowth may not occur until the following spring. In the spring, disease may develop around the edges of pink snow mould patches, or develop in small irregular patches or spots. In contrast, pink snow mold requires snow cover, and large circular patches are seen only after snowmelt. The fungus may be abundant on the patches with light pink fluffy growth called mycelium (Figure 3). Serious injury and large patches occur generally only after

extended snow cover (more than a month) with a prolonged snowmelt. Pink snow mold patches may develop a bright bronze fringe at their edges (Figure 4), and this is one way to distinguish between pink

snow mold and gray snow mold. Heavy topdressing or a layer of leaves can also enhance disease caused

by Microdochium nivale, which may be responsible for much of the tur f kill on home lawns that have a layer of leaves throughout a cool wet winter. So although Fusarium patch and pink snow mold are caused by the same fungus, they can be considered two different diseases.

Which grasses are susceptible?

All the cool season grasses can get disease caused

by Microdochium nivale; however, creeping bentgrass, annual bluegrass and perennial ryegrass are considered more susceptible than the other tur f species. Cereals such as wheat and oat also can be infected by Microdochium nivale or the closely related Microdochium majus, and the disease on wheat is called pink snow mold.

What conditions favor disease?

Fusarium Patch will occur when temperatures are between 0-15 o C with leaf wetness periods of greater than 10 hours a day for several days. Pink snow mold occurs under snow cover, with disease development enhanced by slowly melting snow, and more pronounced disease with longer snow cover. Both diseases are often more severe in shady areas with poor air circulation, poor drainage and a thick thatch layer. Heavy applications of fast-release nitrogen and heavy topdressing serve to increase disease levels.

What are the symptoms?

Fusarium patch in the fall starts as small orange to red-brown circular spots a couple of cm in diameter (Figure 5). Under conditions favorable to disease, the spots will increase in size, and the patches can enlarge and overlap to form large irregular shapes greater than 20 cm across (Figure 6), sometimes with green grass intermixed with yellow grass. When the fungus is very actively growing, the patches have a brown to bronze ring at the outer edge (Figure 2).

The centers of the patches can turn pale and strawlike, or sometimes retain a green color depending on conditions and the host species. Under prolonged wet conditions, white to pink mycelium may be observed on the outer edge of the patch matting the infected leaves together (Figure 7). Diseased grass may appear wet and slimy, and patch centers may have algal growth on the dead leaves. In the spring, fungal activity first starts at the edge of the pink snow mould scars or in the absence of snow in the winter, as small orange to red-brown circular spots.

If favorable conditions (cool and wet) persist in the spring, new spots can occur, and the patches enlarge with irregular edges (roughly circular). Because spores and fungal mycelia are spread by water, machinery and foot traffic, the blighting can appear in streaks or even straight lines when the fungus is carried by sur face drainage and or wheels.

Pink snow mold becomes visible when snow cover of at least several weeks melts, as entire patches of dead, bleached and mycelium-matted grass (Figure 1).

Patches are orange -yellow to red-brown ranging in size from 10-20 cm, but can overlap to form larger patches with scalloped edges. White to pink fungal growth frequently can be seen on outer margin of patch up to several days after snowmelt (Figure 3).

The intensity of the pink colour of the fungal growth and the infested leaves increases with exposure to sunlight (Figure 8). Under severe disease conditions during winter snow cover, crowns and roots may be killed, resulting in little recovery in the spring.

Disease tends to be present in same areas year after year if the same environmental conditions persist.

What is the disease cycle of this fungus?

Microdochium nivale survives through the summer as spores and mycelium in thatch or soil, and is generally not active when temperatures are above 20 o C or when it is dry. In autumn, under cool, wet weather, spores may germinate or microscopic fungal growth called hyphae may grow from thatch or soil and infect leaves. Spores are carried by wind or sur face water to adjacent healthy leaves. The fungus may attack foliage under snow cover especially if the plants have not hardened off and are damaged by the cold temperatures, or have become weakened by prolonged snow cover. After snowmelt the fungus remains active with the late winter or early spring weather, particularly if it remains cool and wet.

What are the management recommendations?

Minimize thatch, since this is where the fungus survives summer as mycelium and spores, and heavy thatch also decreases the vigor of the tur f. Prevent succulent growth into late fall, by mowing until leaf growth stops, and not applying quick-release nitrogen any later than 6 weeks before dormancy.

Slow release nitrogen can be used during this time and also after dormancy has set in. Maintain adequate soil potassium levels throughout the fall. In autumn, remove surplus water, improve air circulation, rake leaves and avoid heavy topdressings. After heavy snowfall, the depth of the snow cover can be reduced so that that duration of snow cover is reduced, but avoid exposing tur f to cold desiccating winds. After disease damage has occurred, rake matted areas to encourage drying and promote new growth by lightly fertilizing damaged tur f. In the spring, avoid succulent growth by delaying heavy nitrogen fertilizer applications. Fungicides can be applied in the fall when disease symptoms first start to occur.

This will reduce the amount of fungus present until the late fall preventative snow mould fungicides are applied. The number of fall fungicide applications depends on how long the weather stays cool and wet. Then if the area normally experiences snow cover of more than a month, a snow mold fungicide may be applied to protect the grass for the duration of snow cover. The snow mold fungicide applications

often involve higher rates of fungicides and the use of more persistent chemicals. After snowmelt, if extensive pink snow is observed or if conditions continue to be favorable for Fusarium patch development, fungicides can be applied. Consult provincial publications for the registered products and the product labels for recommended rates.

What’s the difference between pink snow mold and pink snow mould (or grey snow mould and gray snow mold)?

Mold and gray are American spellings, whereas mould and grey are British spellings. For regular usage among Canadians, either form is acceptable, but it is better to be consistent and not write “gray snow mould”.

Tim suffered a serious and life altering accident on May 5th that required not one but two air ambulance trips eventually taking him to the Intensive Care Unit at Vancouver General Hospital. Tim suffered a break to his C6 and C7 vertebrae and received emergency surgery May 6th.

To date it is unknown whether Tim will regain the use of his legs and the ability to walk again. While Tim has shown improvement, he is facing many, many months of rehabilitation and therapy.

Never one to hold back, and in true Tim humour he has entitled this event the “big reset.” #TEAMKUBASH is humbly asking for your support for Tim. Funds raised will be used towards therapy and any living space alterations that may be required once Tim is able to go home to Salmon Arm.

Report from the Lower Mainland Region

S

pring in the lower mainland has been much drier and warmer than usual, making it great for golf and helpful for tur f recover y after a busy winter. All of our facilities continue to see increased play creating challenges for our tur f teams. As we begin to transition back out of Covid protocols, it will be great to meet and support each other in person again. It will also be interesting to see the effects on golf. Will the increased play continue is a question on many of our minds.

I hope you all have attended the regional presentations this spring; there was some great info and discussion amongst the membership. I would like to thank Jamie Robb for representing the Lower Mainland region on the Covid discussion panel; it was beneficial for our membership! Mark your calendar for the Lower Mainland presentation on July 15 at 10 am on Zoom with invitations to come. Corrie Almack will be joining us to discuss organic matter management and the new OM246 testing methods. Looking ahead for the rest of the season, we are working on hosting an in-person event this fall (assuming we can progress in the provincial Covid recovery), with details to be released as plans develop.

The DogWood Report from the Vancouver Island Region

W

e are up and running for the summer of 2021 on the island and the weather has shown glimpses of summer bliss, but also a few days to remind us of what November can look like.

We have held one meeting via Zoom on April 13th and we were grateful to have Dean Pillar, Rob Watson, Michael Newton, and Jim Goddard join us for a round table discussion at the end of our meeting. We discussed the effects of increased play during winter and adjusting to new and changing policies related to COVID19. It was interesting to have insight from other management positions, Jim Goddard (Director of Golf, Cordova Bay Golf Club) and Michael Newton (General Manager, Glacier Greens Golf Club).

Unfortunately, it is not all good news within the industry. Tim Kubash’s injury was a shock to us all. I have not had the pleasure to get to know Tim personally, but his positivity during such a difficult time has been inspirational to follow.

Michael and Melissa Hodgetts are a family who are also going through difficult times. Melissa has been struggling with cancer. Brian Youell reached out to industry reps and created a silent auction with all benefits going to the Hodgetts family. Within 8 days Brian helped raise $23,164

for the Hodgetts family. Michael, Golf Course Superintendent at Metchosin Golf Club, was over whelmed with appreciation and care given by his peers. Thank you to all the industr y reps and superintendents that generously supported the fundraiser.

The industr y has come together to help support two of its members and their family ’s when they needed it most. Tim’s Go Fund Me page has received donations from regional chapters and Brian’s quick thinking and execution of the silent auction is a reminder of how close knit and strong our tur f community is. Thank you to ever yone who has kindly donated and supported Tim & Michael.

The VIGSA board has decided to cancel their scheduled meeting on June 15th with the potential of hosting an in-person meeting in the coming months. The updated four step programme released by the provincial government outlining potential dates of returning to normalcy has made the light at the end of the tunnel a little brighter!

Report from the Kootenay Region

A

s I sit here awaiting the news on when the provincial government will be moving into the second phase of it’s Covid-19 restart plan, it gives me hope that things one day might be back to normal. The start of the 2021 golf season has been easier then the previous, golfers this year know what is expected of them when coming out to play. Last season we were all flying by the seat of our pants because there was not a Pandemic template for us to follow. I know for us it has been very easy to get people to follow our Covid-19 protocols this season. I’m sure we can all agree that the past 14 months has been ver y hard on us all.

When it was announced that the BCGSA had plans for each regional chapter to organize a speaker for the entire membership to attend virtually, I thought what a great idea. The Kootenay Chapter was quick to get on this as we already had something in mind. March 30th, 2021 our chapter hosted the first BCGSA guest speakers) of the golf season. It was only fitting that the two individuals that did our presentation were experts in the field of dealing with stress.

We were ver y fortunate to secure these two Ladies to talk about something we as professionals all deal with “STRESS”. Their topic was called Stress- It Doesn’t Have To Be Par For The Course, it was an hour-long presentation followed by a 30 minute Q&A. They covered what creates stress, the different types of stress, signs of stress and probably the most important part of the talk was how to deal with stress. I’m sure ever yone in attendance would agree that this was something worth talking about.

The DogWood Report from the Interior Region

A

nother challenging year is unfolding yet I can’t help but remind myself that I could not find a better place to be than working on the golf course, catching the sunrise each day and watching the grass grow. Sure there are those days where I can be frustrated to no end but I always take the time to breathe in the fresh air and relish in the fact that not everybody is as lucky as us tur fies. We truly have one of those careers that could make others jealous and we should not forget it.

Earlier this year, each Chapter was asked if they wanted to provide a virtual educational seminar for all of the other Chapters to participate in.

This gave all of us an opportunity to gain some education and participate in discussions since we were not able to travel.

On May 11th, the Interior Chapter used this platform to have a panel discussion on the topic of ‘Covid-19 and its Effect on the Golf Course Superintendent’. We invited a representative from each region to discuss five topics on the subject and had Davin Marr moderating the group. The conversation included how budgets have been affected by the pandemic; the effect on both the Superintendent’s and team’s well being during this time; Covid practices and policies; as well as relations and protocols with the general public. It was a successful virtual seminar and there was great insight into how others are fairing during this time. Thank you to all who participated.

On June 14th, our Chapter is having our first in-person meeting since the pandemic started (finally!) and there is an eagerness to get back to networking, socializing and golfing with one another again. The lucky location to kick start our journey back to normalcy is Sun Peaks Resort with Keith Lyall as our host. We anticipate a good turnout as we all have been itching to go traveling to other golf courses.

Staff shortages seem to be more apparent than it has in the last number of years. Our Food & Beverage department has been struggling in finding and retaining ser vers and chefs. This has resulted in the Clubhouse temporarily changing the hours of operation to accommodate the shortage until positions are filled. Our maintenance department is experiencing similar struggles - however, we cannot change our hours of work as golfers still want to get out early and there is much to do beforehand.

Instead, our priority list of jobs has shifted and some things, like bunkers, are not getting the attention that they need.

So the million dollar question is why is there a shortage of applicants? The game of golf has been growing since the pandemic started but not the employment side of the business.

Hopefully things will balance out and we can get back to operating to the standards that we want to achieve.

With the anticipation of restrictions easing by the end of June, it will be a great relief to not be so hyper focused on Covid. Protocols will most likely still be in place, but we should be able to have the ability to visit with one another, network and have a sense of normalcy in our lives again.

I look for ward to seeing you all and sharing a beverage (or two) on a sunny patio somewhere.

And remember, the grass is greener on our side of the fence!

Report from the Northern Region

A

s we roll into the beautiful days of summer, I am pleased to report that most of the golf courses in the north are experiencing a fabulous spike in traffic on their properties. An increase in rounds, cart rentals and pro-shop sales are all great signs for golf and, hopefully with the easing of Covid restrictions, will translate into a bump in food and beverage sales as well.

True to form, when I asked my staff for suggestions, they were more than happy with anything I was willing to whip up. However, I think it needs to be more than that. It is time to step up the menu, think outside the box and come up with something truly special to thank my team for their outstanding efforts through some ver y challenging times.

For myself, with 2020 in the rear view it is time to reflect on last year ’s challenges and successes and focus on the positives as we edge closer to our respective normal.

The Northern chapter met via zoom on April 28.

Thanks again to Jason Steadwell from Syngenta for his great education session. Our fall meeting will hopefully be in person at Aberdeen Glen on September 29th, 2021.

One of the things I have missed most with all the restrictions and public health orders in place is our staff appreciation days. I am lucky to have a great team and it is always a pleasure getting together for a little fire, BBQ, and a beverage.

With only a few very spread-out lunches in the past many months and no gatherings at all the staff kitty is flush! As soon as we are allowed, I feel a team gala is in order.

Prairie Tur fgrass Research Center Will WindDown ‘PTRC’ Moniker By Jason Pick

The first, called ‘A New Approach to the Tur f We Play On’ is hosted by the Golf Canada Foundation and has actually been up since last fall. It’s designed for use by golf enthusiasts interested in helping fund green research initiatives that further environmentally conscious and sustainable golf course design and maintenance practices.

The PTRC lost two very capable tur fgrass scientists in recent years, which has prompted an in-depth review of the sustainability of its research program.

In a recent decision by Olds College’s Center of Innovation, while acknowledging the legacy left

by Jim Ross and Mark Anderson, the College will wind-down the “PTRC” moniker, and reconfigure its research team.

To better leverage existing resources, under the leadership of College VP, Joy Agnew, and Project Manager Ike Edegou, a more sustainable and effective model for tur f research at Olds College has been proposed. Strong support and interest by all partners of industry will renew a “new PTRC” research model, driving an expansion of project

2021 Patrick Dooley Memorial Golf Tournament & Field Day Patrick Dooley was a promising young golfer, planning to enroll in the Kwantlen Tur f Management Diploma program after high school graduation. Sadly, Patrick passed away from a sudden illness before getting a chance to pursue his dreams. In hopes of creating a legacy to help others with similar aspirations, the Dooley family and KPU Tur f Club began the Patrick Dooley Memorial Golf Tournament, first held in 2016 and held annually at Mayfair Lakes in Richmond ever since. Funds generated from the tournament support two annual scholarships for worthy KPU Tur f Management students and last year, an additional $7000 was contributed to the WC TA tur f research fund.

Unfortunately, the 2020 tournament was cancelled due to COVID but we are pleased to announce the 2021 Dooley Tournament is on and the Dooley Family, along with the BC Tur f Club, will partner with the Western Canada Tur fgrass Association to expand and enhance this wonder ful event to include a morning tur f management education program and live demonstrations.

Along with the 1:00pm shotgun scramble and banquet, the day will include a morning speaker In the meantime, Stan Kazymerchyk, Lead Tur f Management instructor at Kwantlen and tournament organizer had this to say, “ The Dooley Tournament has had huge success and we’re looking for ward to the new field day format. There’s already 24 foursomes and at least a dozen tee sponsors committed from last year so when registration officially opens in July, get yourself, or preferably your foursome, signed up before we fill up.”

The DogWood CGSA Report - by Ken Bruneski

H

ello from the not so sunny and unseasonably cool Okanagan Valley. Yes as many of us in BC wonder exactly when global warming is coming, most courses have been experiencing the wave of golfers that have hit them due to Covid-19 restrictions anyway. The last wave of restrictions has hit us pretty hard in the smaller tourist driven centers but as we trend in the right direction and restrictions are lessened I expect many travelers to find those desirable summer places once again.

As I write this I am unfortunately missing our first in person meeting of the Interior Chapter of the BCGSA. This meeting signifies a changing of the way we have had to do things over the past year and a half and I for one am excited to resume a somewhat normal lifestyle. So without further ado I present the CGSA Report.

• Membership invoices have been sent to all members (both CGSA and BCGSA). Membership year end is on June 30th so they want to renew before then if possible. So far renewals have been coming in steadily, thank you to those who have renewed thus far - we appreciate your support.

• CGSA has announced their Fall Field Days.

This year there are two to avoid some cross country travel by those who are not ready to do so. September 14th will be the Fall Field Day East at Summerlea Golf & Countr y Club in Quebec ( just outside of Montreal) hosted

September 14th. And the Fall Field Day West is September 21st being held at Canmore Golf & Curling Club in Alberta hosted by Reid Solodan.

To all members, please note: The BCGSA does not automatically track CEC’s for Pesticide Recertification for its members. In order to have your CEC’s for Pesticide Recertification tracked you must make that request by email and forward a copy of your current pesticide certificate to the office. All members who have signed up for tracking are able to view their tracking record online at any time once your tracking has begun.

Invoicing information has been sent out by the CGSA again this year and 2021 Membership Dues are now payable. Please be sure and for ward payment to the CGSA as soon as possible. If you are only paying BCGSA dues, you may for ward dues to the BCGSA office but we cannot take payment for CGSA dues. Deadline to pay this year ’s dues is August 30th.

The office is currently working on plans for the BCGSA Professional Development Days, either a live event in Victoria or a virtual event as was done last year (if regulations do not permit large gatherings). Please keep an eye out for further information.

Regional meetings around the province will return as restrictions in the province are lifted.
