LIVING ON LIVING ON THE EDGE THE EDGE

We are now officially into 2023 and the new year has begun. The Club is developing a multitude of plans for the upcoming year and over the next few weeks and months, will be unveiling the 2023 schedule of events, and updates on services and amenities.
One area of communication that you will be receiving throughout this off-season will be about projects that will be taking place throughout the property. Each year we invest heavily into the property and this year is no different with many enhancements for the Club. Please watch for updates through the Club Newsletter, website postings, the new Facebook page, and weekly e-blasts that will highlight projects that impact you as Club Members.
There is a planned shutdown of the hotel and F&B operations starting on January 16th through February 10th, so that many projects and upgrades to facilities can take place. The first project to get underway that will have some Club Member impact will be the Bayside Indoor Pool renovation project. This is a lengthy process but once completed will be a wonderful enhancement to this facility. While this renovation project is going on, Fletcher Pool will remain open daily for your enjoyment. Please look for a detailed timeline for the project on next week's e-blast communication and website posting.
Additionally, the week of January 16 we will also be receiving and installing new fitness equipment at the Member Sports Club and Bayside Fitness Studio. This is a two-day project that should have minimal impact on you as Club Members, but want to make you aware of this project. Once a timeline has been established for the installation, details will be provided in the weekly e-blast and website posting.
January has also been the traditional kick-off of Member Dining Night at Bayzo’s Pub. Kathy Sullivan has tirelessly organized this evening for the past many years and will be sending an email for a January 10 gathering, one week prior to the planned shutdown. We are hoping to assist Kathy and make it a bit easier to organize the Tuesday Nights, so this year we have added a link to register for Tuesday Nights at Bayzo’s on the Club website. Kathy has already reached out to many who have supported this evening in the past and we hope that many new members can join us on the 10th, and thereafter in February when we reopen.
The new year and the new season at Ocean Edge has begun! On behalf of the entire Club Team, we wish you and your families a very happy and healthy New Year.
Sincerely, Michael Medeiros

Best Swings, Shayne Sakson,
Since COVID, Golf has seen a “Boom” in popularity and rounds played across the country. Ocean Edge also experienced record rounds played over the past few years, albeit a slight drop in total play for 2022 versus 2021, but still an increase from Pre-COVID times. What is interesting is that our Play Percentages have remained consistent, year over year, comparing 2019 through 2022 prime season play:

As the wintertime begins to present us with freezing temperatures and precipitation it is important to protect our most valued turf and ensure it is put to bed correctly. While our shortgrass stopped growing 4-5 weeks ago it is important to safeguard our turf from snow molds that occur during periods of cold and wet weather. We spray plant protectants to provide a shield from the fungus, we also add a green pigment to the spray which will help us come springtime with earlier green-up due to the dark green pigments absorbing more sunlight and increasing canopy temperatures, there in turn waking the turf grass plant up earlier.
The Agronomy team has also started the process of deep tine aerating our greens. This process allows us to use a solid tine and aerate deeper than the traditional aerations we perform in season. When we constantly do our core aerations, they are being performed at a depth of only 2-3 inches. You can develop a hardpan layer at the 2–3 inch depths from the aeration process. With the deep tine, we are going 8 inches and deeper into the soil profile. This allows us to break up the hard pan and allows for better water infiltration rates as well as deeper rooting channels for the turf grass. The picture below is the putting green receiving the deep tine aeration.
Lastly, we want to protect against turf desiccation which occurs when the turf is unprotected by snow cover and subject to drying cold winds for extended periods during the winter. On Cape Cod, we tend to have regular time frames of winterdrying winds. In order to safeguard against this, we apply a “blanket” of top-dressing sand to protect the crowns of the turf grass plants. Below the “sand blanket” is being applied to the putting green.
Best, Craig Sullivan
