I am thrilled to present you with our 2023 weddings edition of Pensacola Magazine. This year’s issue is jam-packed with useful tips and inspiration for your special day. Whether you are just starting your wedding planning journey or are in the process of planning out the final details for your big day, we have included a little something for everyone.

How is it August already?

How is it still 2020? These two questions may seem contradictory, but I can assure you I am feeling them both equally— and I don’t think I am alone.

Congratulations. If you’re reading this first 2021 issue of Pensacola Magazine, it means you have survived 2020, which is no small feat considering the barrage of pain, anxiety, divisiveness, uncertainty, loss and loneliness that 2020 brought to bear on the entire planet. Many have lost their lives, their loved ones, their jobs—one after another, the hits just kept coming. And here we are—on the other side, at least in terms of the Gregorian calendar. What will change in 2021? A lot? A little? We have multiple vaccines that we hope will eventually reign in the coronavirus, put the country back to work and allow for some semblance of social normalcy. When we can freely visit again, how will our lives be different? What has 2020 taught us? How has it changed us? I suspect it will take time to unpack all of the physical, mental and emotional impacts of 2020, but I hope time will heal us and that we are able to grow in positive ways from our individual and collective experiences. In 2021, I’m foregoing the traditional resolutions with specific, measurable outcomes. Instead, I am hoping to turn my energy and focus to a few of the themes that 2020 brought to forefront. No expectations. No stress.

Relationships

Good morning, Pensacola! What a strange place we find ourselves in this spring. The novel coronavirus COVID-19 has arrived in our community and, although we have so far been luckier than many, the fight to keep it from spreading continues. We went to print with this issue on March 30. At that time, Escambia County had 42 confirmed cases and Santa Rosa had 30. Those numbers rose quickly once testing was expanded. Too quickly. The fact is, we don’t know who might have the virus or be carrying the virus without symptoms. That is why it is essential that we, as a community, stay home as much as humanly possible--leaving only for absolute essentials. I like the idea, too, of practicing physical distancing rather than social distancing. We can remain social via many avenues in this modern world—phone calls, texts, video calls—and I encourage everyone to stay connected to their tribe. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring and we all need to feel connected to something or someone in order to get through this.

Losing my mom early in 2020 really brought home the idea that time is a limited resource. We have this moment and the future is always uncertain. In 2021, I hope to give more attention to my relationships with family, friends and community.

Each year, we run a cover contest offering the cover to a local bride and groom featuring a photo from their big day. As you may have noticed, this year’s cover winners are nothing short of stunning. Congratulations to Keyosha and Jonathan Stallworth and their wonderful photographer Abi Van Meter. We love everything about this image—from the cool vibe of the bride and groom to the electric blue of the vintage Galaxie car. As gorgeous as their photo is, we think their love story is even better. Read all about them on page 13. We have also included details on our two runners up as well as a glimpse at all of this year’s amazing cover submissions.

Health

This year is just too much. All of it—the politics, the pandemic, the pundits. I’m over it. So, this month we chose to focus on a much more relaxing and playful “P” word: Pets. Who doesn’t go all gooey inside over an adorable kitten or a playful pup? Only the most heartless among us, I suspect.

Adoptions are on the rise during the pandemic and it’s easy to see why. Pets alleviate the stress, boredom and loneliness of social distancing and uncertain futures. There may be many things out of our control in 2020, but we can provide a loving home to a sweet pet and get more love than we could have imagined in return. While the Pensacola Humane Society has had great success with adoptions and fostering this year, those who love animals know that the shelters are never empty. There is always a pet in need, so if snuggling up to a sweet kitty or playing fetch with a playful pup sounds like a good way to pass some time, check out our adoptable pet profiles on page 34.

While we have always heard that good health is our most valuable asset, 2020 made sure we knew it.

I’d like to focus on making healthy choices while still enjoying the bad-for-you good stuff in moderation.

I don’t know about you, but 2020 offered far too little of either of these to me. I was so consumed with my mom’s illness and then with surviving the grief of her loss and the anxiety of the pandemic and the sorrow of so many national news stories that I took little time for myself. This year, I hope to explore creative and personal endeavors that help me rediscover myself and discover new outlets for personal expression.

If exotic animals are more your thing, head on over to the brand spanking new and significantly enlarged Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. The new location features all the hands-on, up close interaction as the previous location plus added attractions, amenities and experiences that will make for a wonderful family day out.

Procrastination

On that note, I encourage you to read our COVID-19 Resource Guide, which provides resources for food, business, community and more. The ever-changing nature of this crisis necessitates that I mention that these resources may or may not be available to you by the time you read this issue. I hope it will provide a place to start, some ideas or some inspiration either way.

We also delve into the world of tablescapes and bring in local planners to offer creative decor and table setting ideas that are sure to make for an unforgettable reception. This issue also includes a helpful guide to local wedding venues, showcasing some of the most picturesque and unique wedding venues in the area to provide you with ample inspiration for your dream wedding location. For those looking to honeymoon close to home, we have curated a list of some of the most romantic and adventurous options available in our region. And, because we know that planning a wedding can be stressful, we have consulted with a local expert to bring you some helpful tips and advice to help get your relationship in tip-top shape before your big day.

If you’re interested in conservation, check out Dakota Parks story on local Panhandle Rooftop Nesting Biologist, Rebekah Snyder. Through her work with Audubon Florida, Snyder helps to ensure local shorebirds have safe nesting spaces in an increasingly overpopulated region.

All of this, plus a few DIY pet treat recipes and some good news from the Florida legislature regarding protection for pets in abusive situations.

You may also notice that we have some nonpandemic related stories in this issue. We made the call to include already planned articles that might still be helpful, relevant or enjoyable for our readers. We hope you find them useful.

Last but not least, our wedding directory offers a comprehensive list of the top wedding vendors and service providers in our area to help make your wedding planning journey as seamless as possible.

While many people made glorious headway on home improvement and personal projects in 2020, I did not. I did not organize anything. I did not fix anything. I did not learn a language or a new skill. Nothing. But that’s ok, too. I’m still here. That’s an accomplishment. However, in 2021, I’d like to lighten my load and empty my house of much of the clutter and unnecessary junk that fills it. It’s time to make room for something new.

As for us, Pensacola Magazine has been published under one title or another for more than 40 years. We have no plans on changing that. We will continue to publish and to bring you all the information we can for as long as we can. Please reach out to us with story ideas, inspiration or just a quick hello. We are all working from home and we are missing our water cooler conversations.

We hope that this issue provides you with all of the inspiration and resources you need to plan the wedding of your dreams.

So, turn off the news, put down your phone and enjoy these heartwarming tales and adorable of photos of local animals and the folks who care for them. When you’re done, give your kitty a little catnip and throw your dog a bone. It’s these simple pleasures that will keep us all sane.

Jonathan & Keyosha Stallworth

From a DM to a lifetime of love—that’s how our story began.

Jonathan and I met on a dating app called Hinge in 2021, and the connection we developed was instantaneous. He wasted zero time asking me out on our first date, and from our first time meeting in person, we both knew that God had opened the doors for a magical, beautiful future with each other. After seven months of dating, Jonathan popped the question! We were in Chattanooga, TN for my 31st birthday trip. I was completely caught off guard because he assured me that the engagement would not be occurring that weekend. However, after it was all said and done, he revealed to me that God spoke to him and he acted upon it in obedience. Jonathan had set up a photo shoot for us in Coolidge Park to commemorate our trip, and it was on this evening that he asked me to be his wife. It was a cool, overcast evening, as it was supposed to rain that entire weekend, but God saw fit to hold off the rain. We were married on September 9, 2022, at 5Eleven in downtown Pensacola. The number nine represents completion—the fulfillment of one cycle, which leads to the beginning of something new. We chose a classic, timeless theme for our wedding with shades of nude, blush pink, champagne, and ivory. Our floral arrangements and bouquets consisted of roses, hydrangeas, spray roses, lisianthus and Italian ruscus greenery created by Sunshine Designs. The windows overlooking Palafox Place were beautifully draped, up-lighting was installed by Wedding Walls and our decor and candle centerpieces were arranged and provided by Events Styled by LUXE. Culinary Productions provided the catering. Tempest Knox of Bombshell Beats was our makeup artist.

Our day was nothing short of perfect, and none of it would have been possible without our amazing wedding planning team, Lauren and Savannah of J-Soiree. Not a single detail was missed and

everything was fulfilled above our expectations. It was a day filled with love, laughter and countless memories. On the morning of our big day (in true Florida fashion) a major thunderstorm had made its way to the area. I thought the day would be a total washout. Both Jonathan and Lauren kept me calm and reassured me that regardless of how the weather was, it would still be the most beautiful day. Our vendors set up our plan B for rain inside the venue and the show rolled on. But once again, in a similar fashion to our engagement day, God allowed the rain clouds to brush away and revealed blue skies and sun. All of this occurred within enough time to go back to our original plan of having our ceremony outside in the courtyard! Afterward, we both remember looking up and seeing a rainbow painted across the sky. It was nothing short of a wedding day miracle, and God’s promise to us that He’s with us, no matter how the situation appears.

We spent our honeymoon in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, which is hands down one of the most breathtaking places that the two of us have visited. Sand, sun, great food and entertainment— it was the ideal lover’s paradise.

To all of our newly engaged couples, our advice to you is to remember that the two of you are a team, and nothing should come between the two of you. Communicate your desires for your day to each other, and support each other through it all. There will be things that may not work out exactly how you want, and you may have to return to the drawing board once, twice, or even three times; but when it’s all said and done, it will exceed your wildest dreams and the two of you will be wed in marital bliss.

RUNNERS UP

Parmita Samanta & Sean Yancy

We “met” on Tinder when Sean was on a trip to New York City from Atlanta with his brother. We didn’t actually meet inperson during that trip, but we did strike up a conversation which led to us meeting while I was in Florida visiting my best friend three weeks later.

Sean told me from the beginning that he would be moving to Japan. We dated long-distance between NYC and Atlanta for about six months, and then continued our long-distance relationship for the next two years (with lots of travel adventures) after he moved to Kesennuma, Japan. After returning from Japan, Sean moved to NYC.

Sean proposed to me on his 40th birthday—we both had the day off and I kept asking him what he wanted to do, but

Joe and I met during our freshman year of high school at Portsmouth Abbey in Rhode Island. We had both been invited to pre-season for our individual fall sports and from there, an instant friendship was sparked out of our mutual passion for athletics and silliness.

Our engagement was something I could have never imagined. After winning the beloved “Crab Pot’’ hockey tournament on February 22, 2020 (Joe’s second class year at the US Naval Academy), he went out onto the ice with his whole team and gathered around their 5-foot trophy. Soon after, the crowd followed jubilantly onto the ice and before I knew it, the trophy was not the only thing they were circling. All 90-plus people started slowly backing away and watched as Joe got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. It was the

he wouldn’t give me a straight answer. In the morning, he asked if I wanted to go on a walk with our dog, Josie, to Endale Arch in Prospect Park. We walked through the arch, which opens onto a beautiful lawn, Sean handed me Josie’s leash and got down on one knee and popped the question. I bawled.

Our wedding ceremony took place at Court of De Luna in Pensacola. We had a fairly traditional Hindu wedding that took place over the course of five crazy and fun-filled days. There were so many meaningful parts to our wedding–my childhood best friend did all of the decor for our Henna, which took place at my parent’s home on Escambia Bay. During our Mehendi, my college friends surprised us with a hilarious skit about our dating history and one of Sean’s childhood friends did a rendition of Take Me Home, Country

Roads but re-wrote the lyrics to depict us as well. During the Baraat, Sean rode in on a horse that another friend had made a beautiful festive costume for. We genuinely felt surrounded by so much love—it felt magical. You can do all the planning in the world, but you can’t plan that.

The very first vendor we booked after setting a date was local photographer Aislinn Kate and I’m obsessed with every single photo—Aislynn and Kendall did such an amazing job capturing our joy. I cannot say enough about my hair and makeup vendors: Hayley (Gulf Coast Glam House) and Chelsea (Hair + Co) made me feel stunning. Paige (Puas by Paige) made me the most amazing fresh flower jewelry for the Henna–they were dreamy. Sean’s parents hosted an intimate welcome dinner at The Grand Marlin, our Mehendi was held at 5eleven and catered

by Nancy’s, our Ceremony and Reception were both at Court of De Luna and we had a very delicious Farewell Brunch at Apple Annie’s inside Seville Quarter the following morning. My advice for newly engaged couples is once wedding week arrives, just let it all go and enjoy the moment.

easiest answer to any question I’d ever been asked, and I gave an obvious, overjoyed, yes! The rink went wild and I found myself being swept off my feet, spun around and engulfed by all 30 Navy Hockey team members in a large embrace.

We were married at the beautiful Pensacola Country Club. With greenery and florals peeking out of every corner, yes even the chandeliers. My vision of a romantic tropical paradise was brought to life and all within the very classic venue that is the country club. We had a custom wedding crest made that was an absolute hit, at the center was our adored corgi puppy, Muffin. He also played an integral part in our ceremony and first dance.

My favorite aspect of our wedding was the feel of the day. The overall joy I saw from family and friends was something I had

never collectively experienced before. It was so special. The dance floor was literally never empty. Joe crowd surfed three times. I kept repeatedly hearing “that was the best wedding I’ve ever been to, “it’ll be hard to top this one” and of course, I would have to agree with them.

I was in awe of our team of vendors from the very start of the planning process. Nicole from Elegant Pairings by Nicole was my wedding fairy godmother of a planner. Jordan and her team at Spruce Beauty served as our glam squad. Our beautiful flower paradise was brought to life by the team at Fiore. Their creations were above and beyond my wildest expectations. Our cake, cupcakes and cookies were all from Bluejay’s Bakery and our donut selection was from Maynard’s. Our gorgeous seating chart, drink, desert and

welcome signs were all the handcrafted work of Mellissa from Scripted Calling. Last but certainly never least, were our wonderful photographers and videographers from the one and only Aislinn Kate Weddings. I will always be grateful for their attention to detail and their ability to capture moments so beautifully.

Wedding season is upon us, and with it comes the excitement of planning the perfect wedding. One of the most important elements of the planning process is the tablescape design, which sets the vibe for the entire event. This year, the trend is all about bold colors, textures and lush greenery. Whether you’re planning a traditional wedding or a more modern affair, incorporating these elements into your table design can add a touch of elegance and romance that is sure to wow your guests and make your special day even more memorable. We’ve coordinated with top local wedding planners and event designers to bring you a glimpse of some of the hottest wedding tablescape trends for 2023 to provide you with some helpful design tips and inspiration for styling the wedding of your dreams.

Gucci in the Garden

We are creating over-the-top layered atmospheres and unforgettable moments in time. Everything is infused with bold colors, textures and scents. It’s a nod to the maximalist approach of “when you think you are done, you have just begun.” Try something you would never think of grouping together in a tablescape and watch it magically complete the style. Utilize out-of-the-box resources like sultry florals, honeycomb candles, colored glass in every shape and size, golden parrots and glorious fruits. More is more and every detail matters. Add the napkin rings, embellished chairs and backdrops for focal areas. If you have an abundance of any one item, display it in its grandest form. Add a diffuser or two to the room to create the scent of the garden. Your guests will forever have the memory of lush love in their minds.

Gorgeous in Green

Couples looking to incorporate design-rich statement colors without the use of bright florals can also achieve this look by combining rich greens and neutral tones with various shapes and textures. This is another trend that is continuing to show itself this year. Emma and Varleyo achieved this look by opting for white and blush florals, goblets and green velvet napkins paired with asymmetrical wood chargers and stand-out chairs that created a perfect mix for an aesthetically stunning color scheme that truly made its mark. Soft florals with textured details - a reminder that classic and bold can be beautifully synced.

Back in Black

We are creating a bigger, bolder version of classic black and white weddings. Tone-on-tone layers of black are accomplished with linens, vases and chairs, and a crisp white contrast is added via florals, cakes and dinner plates. Pink is back. Pinks that pop, when mixed with a combination of other colors, are adventurous. When done well, they are able to withstand changing trends. Addie and Derek’s uniquely shaped arbor with pops of pink, made for quite the statement-making focal point. The ghost guest chairs provided just the right touch to allow the airy, coastal feel the couple wanted for their wedding. Relationship Training Your Ahead of your wedding day

Many couples get married with love as their foundation, but this does not mean that love is all that’s required for a happy and successful marriage. Marriage does not come without hard work from both sides. Although every marriage is different, the main ingredients for a happy and healthy marriage remain pretty much the same. We have consulted with licensed marriage counselor Julie Nise, to bring you some expert tips to help develop a healthy, happy and successful marriage to last a lifetime.

Questions to Ask Before Embarking in a Successful Marriage:

According to Nise, who is a relationship trainer at Bayside Marriage Counseling in Pensacola, the purpose of an engagement is to actively sort out and resolve concerns, problems, or doubts that would get in the way of a marriage; still, many couples focus on planning their one special wedding day without taking much time to figure out the rest of their lives. Here are some suggestions for problems and discussions for couples to tackle during their engagement:

What happens when you get stuck in traffic with your partner? Do they experience varying levels of road rage? What about when they have multiple work deadlines lined up week after week? The early stages of a relationship denies people the opportunity to see what their partner is like under pressure, but plenty of pressure comes after decades of marriage. This is why it is all too important to understand how spouses handle pressure together—whether they may want to isolate, run or work together to resolve the issue. Nise says that it is imperative to understand that marriage is the most successful with maturity, which is the ability to manage frustration without acting out.

Are there any residual emotional health or substance abuse issues left for us to tackle?

Although problems with substance abuse can develop over time in a marriage, it is common that there have been signs of the problems long prior to engagement without being talked about or acknowledged. Couples should take time to examine theirs and their partners’ relationships to substances. Additionally, talk about any emotional health problems that may emerge: anxiety, depression, insecurity and more. In an American Psychological Association interview, Arthur Aron, PhD said: “If you’re anxious, or depressed, or insecure, it’s very hard to feel happy in your relationship. Initially, you might be, but then you sort of start blaming it on the other person or you just go back to being unhappy.”

How do you plan to divide chores? Does the couple plan to save money over long periods of time or short bursts? Even if gender roles are not present when it comes to housework and finances before marriage, they may seep into married life, especially in heterosexual relationships. Take the time to communicate preferences and annoyances about divvying up responsibilities and managing the checkbook. While a couple may not want to fall into a platonic day-to-day wandering, learning how their partner operates as a roommate may help. Nise discussed that couples should have detailed and flexible goals for all kinds of things like finances, careers, health, fun and adventure, savings, retirement and parenting.

How will children fit into our life?

While a couple’s answers to this question may constantly change over time, it is important to touch base as frequently as possible. If two people are on opposite sides of the issue, they may not be best suited to each other for marriage. The kids topic may be a hard one to tackle, so it’s important to discuss it early and often. What happens if a couple cannot have biological children? Are fertility treatments or adoption an option? What is the plan for balancing couple time and kid time? It will be good to know if one half of the couple is expecting to continue their weekly night out.

Ideas to Never Stop Dating Your Spouse:

Even after a couple has taken the plunge and married their loves, it’s important to keep dating their spouses. By definition, a date is where one person actively plans a period of time, activity or event that they know their partner will enjoy and make them feel special. A date should not only be going to eat, and it does not include children, or discussions about children or money. Love is an act of giving. “Loving someone is not about how you feel, it’s more about how you make the other person feel,” Nise said. With Nise’s help, we have made a list of some tried-and-true date ideas for couples to try out for themselves.

The Book of 1000 Questions:

Couples can sit down together, pour a glass of wine, put their feet up and relax while taking turns asking and answering questions from this fun questionand-answer style book. Whether silly or thought-provoking questions, the answers may be surprising in this interesting method to learn more about a life-partner.

Do something nice for your partner randomly: Try starting with making them their favorite meal, bringing home a card or some flowers and filling up their car’s tank with gas. Anything a spouse can do to make their partner feel special is a good idea.

Bring a picnic to your partner at work: If one partner has a hectic schedule, consider packing up some sandwiches and fruit into a basket complete with a blanket to bring to your partner at work on a random Tuesday. Have a quick lunch in the park, sit back and enjoy each other’s company before returning to the office.

How should we balance our marriage and relationships with friends and family?

After marriage, life will become an everlasting-balancing act between the new life with a spouse and their family and the family of origin. While it is important to figure out how not to neglect family and friends, a family of origin should not have more leverage on a marriage than the spouse, according to Nise. She further explains that childhood ties must be cut in order to be successful in a new family. If a person is simultaneously trying to be a good daughter or son while being a good spouse, there’s a chance one performance may prevail over the other.

How will we handle changes and new expectations?

One thing a lot of people don’t realize is how much we plan out our lives before marriage, so when something happens that jeopardizes those plans, it can take a toll on the relationship. The other expectation that some people have is that their partners will suddenly change their ways after getting married. For example, there may be an expectation that someone who’s never been great with money will suddenly become financially responsible in marriage. Nise says that one pitfall in relationships is having a lot of rules rather than remaining flexible. She also talks about a person’s inability to notice what’s going on with the other person and being self-absorbed. If someone chooses to get married, they should marry that person as they are. If the person makes any changes, it should be based on their own merit, not their spouse’s. Try not to make the mistake of thinking that marriage will magically fix all of the problems in your relationship.

How will we communicate and work through disagreements and conflict?

Conflict is inevitable, but how couples handle the conflict is just as important as the conflict itself. Aron says that one way to handle conflict is to try to think about it from a third person’s perspective who will not take sides but still care about the relationship. After seeing the conflict from that perspective, there are some rules to follow. John Gottman explains these rules with what he calls “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”; the things couples should avoid in an argument are criticism, defensiveness, contempt and stonewalling. Shaming, guilt and withholding of intimacy should not be used as a weapon in a marriage or relationship. “Emotional and physical blackmail is what happens when you do that,” Nise said. Scorekeeping and competition has no place in a marriage, that is, unless you want to end up like platonic roommates.

How much do we value time together and our private time apart?

How well do couples share space and time? While seemingly not a huge issue in a marriage, personal space causes major conflict in big ways—he is used to going on weekly solo trips—to small ones—she likes to go shopping by herself each week. Every relationship has a variance of how much time each person needs to spend without their partner. How can a couple make sure their styles fit together into marriage? These differences can be alleviated with respect, understanding and communication. Nise says that a marriage is a team. The skill couples want to develop is not independence, but rather intradependence, meaning you put the needs of the team first, thus making your relationship more successful.

Go for a scenic drive by the beach and blast your favorite summer tunes: Even something as seemingly mundane as a drive can operate like a date with a loved-one. Dates don’t have to be structured or expensive, just quality time making your partner feel special.

Enjoy some coffee together on a Sunday morning: Taking a trip to Starbucks, or the local downtown cafe, for coffee and some under-the-tablefootsie can make for the perfect ending to a nice weekend.

FIND YOUR FIT

Dress shopping is far more complicated than white or ivory, short or long. There are many more components to finding the perfect wedding dress that brides must consider before, during and after dress shopping from waistline cut to fabric color, length, detailing and material. There are also many more things to think about: will you decide to wear a hat, a hairpiece, or the more traditional veil? As a bride, are you envisioning an elegant and long train attached to your dress or a short dress that is more fun and flirty?

This helpful guide is designed to provide a strong base from which you can formulate your own tastes based upon the silhouette, waistline, neckline and the style of your wedding dress.

Silhouette

So, what exactly is the silhouette versus waistline? Silhouette refers to the overall shape of the dress as it fits to your body. Will the dress hug tightly to your hips or accentuate your waist? Here are some of the options:

A -Line

Fitted through the bodice, this style of dress flows out to the ground from your natural waste. It is the most universally flattering silhouette as the A-line cut narrows the torso. This style has the ability to maintain that ballroom appeal without the pouf and weight of crinoline. Many fabrics and neck lines work well with the A-line silhouette. Petite brides will appear longer in the torso, while brides with fuller hips will find that the right fabric can draw attention up and away from that area. An A-line silhouette can also create the illusion of curves for straight-bodied brides.

Mermaid

This daring silhouette is perfect for the bolder bride. A mermaid silhouette hugs the entire body, flaring out at the knees. This sleek shape will do more highlighting of your body than hiding. Brides leaning toward this style want to feel very confident in their own bodies as this dress silhouette will contour every curve. A variation on the mermaid shape is the “trumpet” silhouette. Although very similar, a trumpet shape is a bit more forgiving as it will not cinch every curve down to your knees. Sometimes referred to as a “fit and flare” silhouette, the trumpet generally flares out less severely low on the hips with a more A-line-like skirt.

Sheath / Column

A sheath dress is a close-fitting silhouette that accentuates the natural contours of the body. The sheath flows straight down from the neckline to the bottom hem of the dress. Because of the simple silhouette, there are many neckline variations that could work such as strapless halter, v-neck, or a simple scoop. It is harder to hide problem areas wearing a sheath, but fabric and detailing can make all the difference to accentuate your style.

Trumpet

This stunning silhouette is fitted through the body and flairs out mid-thigh and the cut is between a modified a-line and a mermaid cut. It’s form-fitting, highlights a bride’s natural curves and gradually flares out. The key difference between a trumpet and mermaid silhouette is where the flair begins. The flare begins at mid-thigh, which is higher up than the mermaid style. This creates a trumpet-like silhouette that’s often considered a bit easier to move around in versus the other style. Another key difference between the two styles is the overall size of the flare. Mermaid dresses have a more dramatic flare, while the trumpet style flares out more gradually. From sweep to cathedral trains, trumpet style gowns can have a train of just about any length. This style is ideal for brides looking to accentuate a small waist.

Ball Gown

This silhouette is appropriate for the traditional or formal wedding, or both. The bodice of the dress is fitted in contrast to the voluminous full skirt that can be one piece or separate. Like the A-line gown, the ball gown can support various necklines to cater to the style and formality of the wedding. Ball gowns, given the proportion of bodice to skirt, accentuate the hip region and will make the area appear wider. Brides who do not wish to highlight this area should stay away from the fullness of a ball gown. Opt for an A-line for a similar but not so severe effect. Something worth noting: ball gowns are a great silhouette choice to pair with trains as the dress can easily hold the additional weight of material for both short and long trains.

Non-traditional Lengths

The midi is a non-traditional silhouette that hits between the knees and the ankles.. There is no specific measurement or seamlines, but the idea is to curate a length that compliments your proportion and height. This cute and sweet style would complement a much more casual affair such as a backyard or a beach wedding. Another short and sweet cut is the mini silhouette, which has a hem somewhere above the knee. Many brides may choose to have a reception dress as well as the traditional one – this shorter cut makes it easier for a bride to move about the party and would make an excellent second dress. Both of these non-traditional cuts make great choices for destination weddings as they are easy to pack and a suitcase.

Necklines

One of the most important details to consider when searching for a gown is the neckline. Not only does this detail help to highlight your face, but it also impacts your entire wedding day look. As a rule of thumb, petite brides tend to go with a deep neckline, tall brides gravitate toward styles with a higher neckline, and brides with fuller figures complement their curves with looks that brush just below the collarbone. Another thing to keep in mind, particularly for a more religious ceremony, is the dress code. How a bride goes about choosing a neckline to match a silhouette may be determined by the dress code of that chosen house of worship. Many churches have such rules. Check with your congregation leader for guidelines.

Sweetheart

This style is most commonly found on strapless wedding dresses. It creates a heart shape at the bust. The sweetheart creates support while limiting exposure–a feature that is great for bust your brides.

Scoop

A scoop neckline works well with the most sleeve lengths, and depending on the amount of desired exposure, the scoop can be either high or low. Scoop neck lines will likely be on dresses with straps.

Halter

A halter neckline makes quite the statement on taller brides. This design flatters the upper arms and shoulders. This style is best for broad-shouldered brides and taller figures. You’ll want to avoid the halter neckline if you’re short or you have narrow shoulders, as this style can overwhelm your figure.

V-neck

The v-neck can vary in depth from plunging to modest and will most likely come with straps. V-necks are often paired with a halter top-style silhouette.

Square

A horizontal line cuts across the neck in a square neckline. This is an elegant look for most figures, and if desired, it works well with various sleeve lengths.

Straight

This neckline is a very simple cut straight across the chest. It is very common on strapless dresses.

Off-the-Shoulder

The off-the-shoulder wedding gown neckline is a favorite among brides of all shapes and sizes. Its classic design gives off a bit of a regal feel and works well with cap sleeves, short sleeves or gowns with long sleeves. It can look especially flattering on brides with narrow shoulders who want to highlight their collarbone and complexion.

High-Collar/Jewel

A high-collar neckline, which can also be referred to as the jewel, covers the chest entirely. The collar can extend partway or high up on the neck, depending on the designer. It can also work with various sleeve lengths for a refined and elegant taste.

Bateau

This neckline cuts from shoulder to shoulder, resting high on the chest. A bateau neckline draws attention to your neck and collarbone.
