THROUGH THE RAIN

BLIND MELON’S CHRISTOPHER THORN TALKS MUSIC & LEGACY

If you grew up in the 1990s, you’re more than likely familiar with Blind Melon’s breakout song No Rain The track soared in popularity partially due to its whimsical music video—featuring the now-iconic “Bee Girl”—which received heavy airtime on MTV

Just as the group began its rise to fame, they were faced with tragedy when lead singer Shannon Hoon passed away at only 28 years old. Following Hoon’s death, the group attempted to continue the band, even holding auditions for a new lead singer, but failed to find a suitable replacement. Ultimately, the group disbanded in 1999.

In 2006, Blind Melon reunited with new lead singer Travis Warren. Today, the band continues to tour with Warren, along with original members guitarist Roger Stevens, guitarist Christopher Thorn, drummer Glen Graham, and bassist Nathan Towne, who joined the group in 2017.

Blind Melon’s first headlining tour since 2019 is currently underway, which includes an upcoming stop at Vinyl Music Hall in downtown Pensacola. We had the opportunity to catch up with Thorn ahead of the band’s upcoming show to discuss some of their latest endeavours, career highlights and how they’ve weathered the highs and lows over the years.

Blind Melon will take the stage at Vinyl Music Hall on August 15 at 8 pm. For tickets and show details, visit vinylmusichall.com. Follow @blindmelonband on Instagram and Facebook for clips, photos and updates on their current tour.

Blind Melon’s sound stood apart in the midst of the ‘90s grunge wave. What influenced your sound and songwriting approach in the band’s early days?

Thorn: I would say absolutely nothing to do with the sound of grunge. I don’t mean it disrespectfully, but my influences were more like Bob Dylan and older artists. I didn’t really have the same guitar sound as all those guys. It’s funny— now, when I hear records from that time, everybody’s pretty darn distorted. I was pretty clean. I just had very different influences than a lot of the influences that formed the grunge sound. I wouldn’t say we had that [grunge sound] in our band, but it was that period of time, so we got lumped in with everybody, but it wasn’t really our thing. Can you give a little insight into your writing process? What comes first, the riff or the lyrics?

Thorn: Every single thing I’ve written is always on the acoustic. It’s usually sort of a late-night process for me—sitting around with the acoustic and an idea pops up. I also have tons of recordings. Back in the day, I traveled with a cassette recorder. At this point, I always

have my phone with me for the little iPhone recordings. Then, if something feels special, I’ll either know it at that moment, or I might know it the next day. For me, really good songs come with a melody, and maybe they have a little spark of a lyric that gets me started.

Between Blind Melon, your other projects and collaborations with other artists over the years, how has your perspective on music changed?

Thorn: . When I’m working with people as a producer, I always say, ‘One song can change your life.’ That perspective hasn’t changed. The right song will change everyone’s life in that band and everyone around them. I still have to believe that it’s just about writing a song that connects with people, and that’s the magical part. Sometimes you don’t know why a song is magical and connects with people, but with the process of writing and rewriting, you’re giving yourself your best options to have one of those songs that are a little special. We had No Rain and Change songs like that just appear. You’ve had both great successes and devastating losses in this band—what’s kept you grounded throughout your career?

Thorn: My family keeps me grounded. I married my high school sweetheart, so she’s been with me since the early ‘90s when Blind Melon was getting signed. I have a great grounding when it comes to my family, and I would

say that’s probably what’s kept me as grounded as I could possibly be in this business.

Is there something that you’re especially proud of from your career with Blind Melon?

Thorn: I’m proud of some of my favorite songs that I wrote with Shannon, like ones from the album Soup , as well as Pull , Paper Scratcher and Drive . I’m proud of those songs that we wrote together and that people still care about— that’s really incredible.

When playing some of the older songs today, do you feel the same way about them emotionally?

Thorn: No, not at all—I feel twice as emotional about them. That’s the truth. The songs that I wrote in my 20s are now twice as emotional to me. I had no idea when I was writing in my 20s that these could be songs that people still want to hear in 35 years. They feel extra special to me now, especially seeing the connection that the audience has with them. I probably took it for granted more in my 20s. Now, I have an incredible feeling of being humbled by the fact that people still care about our songs.

Are there any newer artists that you feel are carrying the torch or that you’re particularly inspired by?

Thorn: I don’t know about carrying on the torch, but I love new music.

I’m the biggest Dominic Fike fan.

To me, he’s about as good as it gets out there. I also love the band Grou-

plove. There’s lots of new stuff that I love, and I’m always looking for the new thing that excites me. With the cultural shift towards ‘90s nostalgia, have you seen a new generation of fans discovering Blind Melon?

Thorn: 100 percent. That’s what we’re seeing at the shows. The other night we played, and I was like, ‘Oh my god. The whole first few rows are all 20 year olds!’ It’s so cool and also incredibly flattering. I’d like to think every new generation gets turned on to the best [artists] of the decade before them. Hopefully, we get to be a part of their discovery. What can fans expect from a Blind Melon show?

Thorn: We’re out there to have a great time. We’re having fun. You’re having fun. That’s really the only goal. It’s just the exchange of good energy that is in the room. The ultimate goal is to make sure everyone forgets about everything in the universe for the hour and a half that we’re playing for them. Everyone can just escape, and that’s what we’re doing, too. That’s my hope. Does Blind Melon have any new projects on the horizon?

Thorn: Oh yeah, we have a bunch of new songs. We released a few singles in the last couple of years, and we’re always writing. We’ll wind up releasing a record at some point, I’d like to think, but right now we’ve just been busy on the road.■

CATALYST EARNS FOURTH-YEAR RECOGNITION AS

ONE

OF THE TOP COMPANIES TO WORK FOR IN FLORIDA

Catalyst Healthcare Real Estate (Catalyst), a full-service healthcare real estate development and investment firm, was named one of Florida’s Best Companies To Work For.

The annual Best Companies To Work For In Florida list featured in the August issue of Florida Trend magazine ranks 100 companies in small, medium and large employer categories.

To participate, companies or government entities were required to have at least 15 workers in Florida and to be in operation at least one year. Companies that chose to participate underwent an evaluation of their workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems, and demographics. The process also included a survey to measure employee satisfaction. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking.

“We are honored to be recognized for the fourth consecutive year as one of the Best Companies to Work For in Florida,” says Alex Stacy, President and Chief Operating Officer of Catalyst. “This recognition highlights the intentional culture we’ve built and the continued emphasis we place on creating an engaging and meaningful workplace. Our team’s dedication and passion are what truly set Catalyst apart.

“Our annual ‘ Best Companies To Work For In Florida’ program once again shows what sets the state’s best employers apart from others — and it’s not paychecks or profit margins,” says Florida Trend Executive Editor Amy Keller. “While those help, of course, the best companies invest in people and find creative ways to motivate and reward employees and help them grow. They’re also purposeful about creating a great culture. These employers find ways to encourage connection and camaraderie — and they also prioritize giving back to their communities, understanding that it can have a profound impact on morale. Their examples offer an excellent roadmap for companies seeking to differentiate themselves from the competition.”

“Always a step ahead… this year’s group of Best Companies To Work For In Florida stand out among their competition,” says Florida Trend Publisher David Denor. “Dynamic thinkers, creative and inspiring in their actions, and enterprising in their industries – these companies recruit, retain and deliver distinctive workplace environments and employee benefits plans to keep their staff engaged,

involved and constantly collaborating. These organizations deliver a glimpse into future workforce and workplace environments.”

The Best Companies To Work For In Florida program is managed by Florida Trend and Workforce Research Group and is endorsed by the HR Florida State Council. Workforce Research Group managed the registration, survey and analysis and determined the final rankings. NATIONAL ENERGY USA PLANS TO EXPAND OPERATIONS IN PENSACOLA

National Energy USA, a ClimateTech engineering firm headquartered in Pensacola, Florida, has been awarded a $350,000 grant through the University of West Florida’s (UWF) Industry Resilience and Diversification Fund (IRDF). The grant, facilitated by FloridaWest Economic Development Alliance and UWF, will support the company’s expansion and the creation of 15 high-wage jobs over the next three years.

Based at FloridaWest’s business incubator, CO:LAB, National Energy USA specializes in AI-powered robotic sorting technology that extracts valuable resources from waste and converts organic material into renewable energy.

“We’re honored to have been selected for the UWF IRDF grant and excited about growing our business,” said Dave Robau, founder and CEO of National Energy USA. “We plan on hiring 15 people as we build out our technical team with additional engineers, scientists, and fabricators to meet customer demand.”

Robau, a UWF alumnus & former Air Force scientist, explained the company’s technology.

“National Energy USA uses robotic sorting systems with AI that scans garbage as it comes across a conveyor belt,” said Robau. “All the organic waste is turned into an engineered fuel and converted to energy to displace fossil fuels. Our technology partner has been doing this for larger customers with 300,000-plus populations, and our mission is to bring this technology to smaller customers by making it modular. We own and operate the system, and the customer benefits from the cost savings and the increased recycling and landfill diversion.”

A key market for National Energy USA is the Department of Defense, which operates more than 500 military installations worldwide. The company recently secured a Navy SBIR contract for its Waste-Powered Energy Microgrid solution to help Navy installations reduce landfill use and generate baseload power.

“Winning the SBIR contract was validation that our technology can help solve real challenges for the Navy,” said John Switzer, National Energy’s CFO and a UWF alumnus. “This further demonstrates our approach is both innovative and mission-ready.”

UWF Provost Dr. Jaromy Kuhl said the IRDF grant was strategically designed to

HEALTH CARE OFFERS NEW TREATMENT OPTION FOR HEART FAILURE

Baptist Health Care successfully completed its first Barostim™ Baroreflex Activation Therapy and is the first to offer this treatment option to patients in Northwest Florida since the device received FDA approval. Barostim™ uses signals from the brain and nervous system to treat patients with heart failure who may continue to have symptoms after taking medication. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a chronic, progressive condition where the heart muscle is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs for blood and oxygen. The Barostim™ procedure was performed at Baptist Hospital by Russell Ronson, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon.

“This is different from other devices as it does not go inside the heart or blood vessels. Instead, an implant is placed near the carotid artery, sending small electrical signals to special sensors in the neck called baroreceptors,” said Dr. Ronson. “These sensors help the brain control how the heart, kidneys and blood vessels work, allowing the heart to pump more efficiently, which can help patients feel stronger.”

People with heart failure often experience shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling in lower extremities, weakness and reduced ability to perform physical activity. When used with medication, Barostim™ has been shown to help improve heart function, allowing people to feel better and get back to the activities they enjoy.

“This procedure is an innovative treatment option that can help improve CHF symptoms and enhance the quality of life for select patients,” said Sumit Verma, M.D., electrophysiologist. “Others who may benefit from this procedure are patients with pacemakers, those experiencing severe symptoms of coronary artery disease, or individuals who are not candidates for a heart transplant. This alternative treatment may be an option to help support their heart function,” said Dr. Verma.

Baptist Heart & Vascular Institute offers innovative procedures to continuously advance the level of heart and vascular care available in the Northwest Florida and South Alabama region.

For more information about this procedure, call 448.227.6500 or schedule an appointment at easyschedule.com

HARKINS TO RETIRE AS GOODWILL CEO AFTER 50 YEARS OF NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP

Following 50 years of dedicated service to nonprofit organizations, Goodwill Gulf Coast has announced the retirement of Frank Harkins as President and CEO, whose vision has been instrumental in shaping the mission and impact of Goodwill Gulf Coast throughout its 10-county service area in Alabama and Florida. Harkins will retire from the position this October.

Harkins spent the first four years of his career at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega, AL, which was instrumental to his understanding the needs of individuals with disabilities. In 1979, Harkins began his 46-year tenure as senior administrator of the Mobile chapter of Alabama Easter Seals and, later on, Goodwill Gulf Coast, following a merger of the two nonprofits in 1999. He has played a pivotal role in shaping the nonprofit organization into a dynamic force for community empowerment.

“I’m grateful and blessed to have been given the opportunity to serve Goodwill Gulf Coast for the past 46 years,” Harkins said. “It has been my pleasure to work with the Board members, community leaders, and Goodwill staff and volunteers who have played such a vital role in our success.”

Through Harkins’ leadership, Goodwill Gulf Coast grew substantially, expanding its programs, services, and retail operations across southwest Alabama and northwest Florida. The array of programs and services – most offered free-of-charge to participants – moved from a historical mission of providing vocational rehabilitation services and medical equipment assistance to address even more community needs, including early childhood intervention, an inclusive child development center, English language and literacy programs, GED training and testing, youth-at-risk measures, an autism evaluation clinic, and an adult day program for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Today, Goodwill Gulf Coast helps thousands of individuals annually through job training, employment placement services, youth and family support, disability services and more – all rooted in its mission to empower people through education, employment, and supportive services. In FY 2024, for every dollar that Goodwill

Gulf Coast spent, 90 cents went directly to support programs and services.

“Frank’s vision and heart have been the cornerstone of our mission for nearly half a century,” Richard Wilkins, Board Chair of Goodwill Gulf Coast, said. “His unwavering dedication and service has improved countless lives and helped build more supportive, inclusive communities. We are deeply grateful for his long-term leadership and legacy. His impact will continue to resonate through the outstanding non-profit organization he helped build and the many lives he touched over the years.”

During his tenure, Harkins championed community partnerships and prioritized programs that address barriers to employment, access to education, and economic mobility. His steadfast commitment has earned him recognition from numerous organizations over the years, including being named Rotarian of the Year in 2014 by the Mobile Downtown Rotary Club.

In a statement to the Board and staff reflecting on his pending retirement, Harkins shared: “It has been the honor of my life to serve this organization and the people we support.
